No. Casting sessions don't work like that.
Of course the Japanese don't need to be diverse. They don't want to be diverse. They are deeply frightened about the notion of being diverse. We're not Japan, we shouldn't be.
However, that has nothing to do with how Saban, or anybody else, casts their shows.
No one anywhere, for any show, has a bunch of people read and, say, okay, I'll take the best six. They will occasionally swap actors, or create new parts for a strong read, or remember them later for a future part. But that's it.
They didn't have to go out of their way to be stereotypically non stereotypical, but that's wasn't even the most important qualification. Their primary requirement for the part was that their relative heights and builds allow them to swap out for their Japanese counterparts, and that they had enough martial arts training to fake it on screen. Acting is pretty low on the list of priorities. Now while it's true that you could end up having a weaker actor because the pool for that race/gender/what have you sucks, I don't remember anybody in Power Rangers being that above and beyond awful. (By the way, the type most likely to suck in acting ability? Young and pretty.)
Was Saban obvious in their efforts to be non-offensive? Sure. Would selecting a cast that was less diverse have boosted the quality of the show in the least? Not bloody likely.

I want to use trek nod but that doesn't quite feel appropriate here. Maybe we need a different nod. I almost didn't watch it either, so I understand. I love Kabuto so I'm not a great judge there, but I can let you know how the Gokaiger thing plays out. It's hard to tell if he was really badass because they needed to get everything done in one episode or if he's going to be a boring always-wins rider. If you're not interested at all that's fine too. :) Hope Go-Busters keeps on being awesome.

When they use white actors they tend to use the same people over and over again. There's a blonde girl and a brunette woman I see pop up in small roles all the time. A Kamen Rider actor has won a Japanese Academy Award! I wouldn't be surprised if Takeru Sato gets one eventually too, he's phenomenal. I think kids shows maybe get more respect there, though, or at least KR and Sentai do.

I'm a fan of colorblind casting. The situation of Grey's Anatomy, however, is more complicated than I can get into now, and in any event, is not applicable to what Saban wanted.

If hapa is the standard for diversity in Japan, that kind of proves my point. ("We have both kinds of music, Country and Western.") Most of the time, I have been underwhelmed with the acting abilities of Westerners in Japanese productions, being mainly either military personnel, local otakus, or actors who can't hack it anywhere else.

And yes, Jon, there have been absolutely abysmal american rangers. The Samurai cast exemplifies this, to extremes. Yes, I am biased, considering it's the adaptation of my favorite sentai. They had a time crunch to get it done and stuck to the Shinkenger scripts which only exacerbates the bad acting. Shinkenger is probably the most Japanese post-Zyu sentai, which is a huge problem in and of itself in terms of adaptation and they didn't even have the time to TRY to make it otherwise.

They could have done it if there wasn't the delay in switchover from Disney back to Saban and that remixed MMPR season didn't air. They radically changed Go-Onger into RPM. Which is what would have needed to happen to make Shinkenger work here.

Alas, reality.

Which is what saddens me. I know in the back of my head that that's the bottom line, but this is probably the one area in existence where I want to be optimistic.

I can't really speak for any show other than the first one. And unless the casting is really lopsided, that is, a mix of strong actors with one really shitty one, my point stands.

The ultimate question is whether one could do an accurate transfer of a toku show that was faithful to the original. The best route is to just dub it. If there's a market for it, great, if not oh well. Crappy or not, Saban's approach makes a ton of money, and it would be a long hard slog to do anything else, since no matter what validity it has creatively, it has to make more money that the lazy ass shit pile they churn out now.

It let Max Factory get the rights to make Dragon Knight Figmas when Bandai always had the rights to do Ryuki figuarts. Oh legalities~

Their accessories aren't that hard to pull off with Figmas. I can't imagine Bandai making figuart engines when they already exist in DX form. I guess they'd have to go to effect parts.

I feel like it will be okay. And, I have some things to back that up, not just blind optimism.

With Fourze, there were problems along the way. It seemed like in every set of 10 episodes there was something going a bit haywire. Questionable logic (Hopping), overuse of an attack (Rocket Drill kick, which you could argue mirrors the focus on TaToBa), fights which foreshadowed the horrible fights in the last few episodes (Coma, and several others that used Magnet States when he needed to be mobile), the betrayals. For me, there was stuff happening all along the way, and the betrayals and ultimately Kengo made it all crash. The structure was already cracked, progressively so. The good stuff came in staccato beats, with meh, and progressively bad stuff filling in the gaps.

So much about the plot wasn�t revealed until the end. The presenter? That was there and gone, so fast. There wasn�t much to it. It was around, what, 3 or 4 episodes, tops? The Kengo stuff was SO out of left field.


Let�s explore some outcomes for Go-Busters and how they are far more warranted, even now. Say Enter ends up betraying Messiah (I�m pretty sure he will). The progression isn�t the same as it was with Buredoran. Most likely he�s been doing stuff behind the scenes, while they�re bringing Escape along. That isn�t an outright copypasta.

The situation isn�t close to what Shinkenger drove towards. Hiromu might doubt himself, but I don�t see them pulling a Kaoru situation. I don�t see them pulling the defeating instead of sealing affair with Messiah/Enter/Escape. They were already sealed, that�s the base situation of the series.

I can see them having the core 3 finishing the job, like in Go-Onger. That, however, feels more like a sentai trope. One I�m not opposed to. More on that, in a second.

Killing someone. I actually believe they might do it. But, I think they can do a wonderful job, for several reasons. THE SEEDS HAVE ALREADY BEEN SOWN. Yeah, I can't imagine there's a huge pool of white actors to begin with in Japan. It's not a very diverse country. When they do use non-asian actors it usually seems like they write the part around the actor. I'm pretty sure they did that with Serge Vasilov in Kuuga.

555 is the only toku show I can think of that used a lot of non-Japanese Asians. I think it's the only show that had a non-Japanese Rider too, though maybe I'm forgetting someone. I always wondered if Yuka being half-Chinese was supposed to be why people were so nasty to her. It's never stated.

I feel like it will be okay. And, I have some things to back that up, not just blind optimism.

With Fourze, there were problems along the way. It seemed like in every set of 10 episodes there was something going a bit haywire. Questionable logic (Hopping), overuse of an attack (Rocket Drill kick, which you could argue mirrors the focus on TaToBa), fights which foreshadowed the horrible fights in the last few episodes (Coma, and several others that used Magnet States when he needed to be mobile), the betrayals. For me, there was stuff happening all along the way, and the betrayals and ultimately Kengo made it all crash. The structure was already cracked, progressively so. The good stuff came in staccato beats, with meh, and progressively bad stuff filling in the gaps.

So much about the plot wasn’t revealed until the end. The presenter? That was there and gone, so fast. There wasn’t much to it. It was around, what, 3 or 4 episodes, tops? The Kengo stuff was SO out of left field.


Let’s explore some outcomes for Go-Busters and how they are far more warranted, even now. Say Enter ends up betraying Messiah (I’m pretty sure he will). The progression isn’t the same as it was with Buredoran. Most likely he’s been doing stuff behind the scenes, while they’re bringing Escape along. That isn’t an outright copypasta.

The situation isn’t close to what Shinkenger drove towards. Hiromu might doubt himself, but I don’t see them pulling a Kaoru situation. I don’t see them pulling the defeating instead of sealing affair with Messiah/Enter/Escape. They were already sealed, that’s the base situation of the series.

I can see them having the core 3 finishing the job, like in Go-Onger. That, however, feels more like a sentai trope. One I’m not opposed to. More on that, in a second.

Killing someone. I actually believe they might do it. But, I think they can do a wonderful job, for several reasons. THE SEEDS HAVE ALREADY BEEN SOWN. Fourze absolutely had problems right from the start, and had plenty of problems even when I was loving the hell out of it. The show wouldn't have been able to be damaged by a few episodes like that if it'd been a consistently strong show up to that point. There are a couple Rider series that I feel really falter near the end, but I'm still able to love the show because of everything else they'd done (and because I don't feel like they were trying to besmirch a better show's legacy).

I feel like they tried to build up to what they did with Kengo to an extent, what with his constant illnesses, but it didn't really mesh with what they ultimately did (rip off W). It's like they had their own unique story going on there and then decided to try and force it to be something else. I know there was some continuing story with the horoscopes right from the start, but looking back, Fourze almost feels episodic, without a lot of carry over from one arc to the next. There'd be a big build up about something with a minor character, and then they'd be completely ignored. They'd devote a lot of time something like Shun realizing he still has feelings for Miu or JK developing a deeper appreciation for the value of his friendships and then act like it never happened (or in the case of Shun, remember it only when you want to make jokes). And there were all sorts of little things that wouldn't carry over like "whoops this character decided to drop out of a prestigious space program one episode later". It really feel like they weren't thinking of the long game when they wrote it.

Looking back, there are only a few things I feel they really succeeded at. Emoto/Tachibana's story had a better buildup than just about anything in the series, was terrifically touching even when I was extremely angry at the show, and absolutely holds up when I think back at it. And, even though it fell apart, the friendship theme was incredibly effective when it worked. It really felt like Gen was working winning the audience (or me) over, making it easy to overlook any problems the series had. I don't think FRIENDSHIP could have salvaged the KENGO IS PHILIP ending, but it went a long way to making the show feel better than it was.

Even though I lost my love for a lot of the characters, I still think Fourze had a really great cast, and they went a long way towards elevating the show too. Gen largely worked as a character because Sota Fukushi is ridiculously charming. They underused the hell out of her near the end, but Shiho made some pretty simple lines hysterically funny, and I still giggle thinking back at those moments. JK, Miu and Shun were introduced as jerks, and they were able to become likable so quickly because of the actors who played them more because of anything written in the script. I hope they get redeemed in the Fourze movies a little like Shu Watanabe did, and I hope they get to do more toku. It must be so frustrating for them. :sad:

I'm not against falling back on tropes. There are tropes in W I'll always be a sucker for, like the bad guy switching sides and sacrificing himself for the heroes, or heroes going into a battle they have almost no chance of winning. But there's a big difference between reusing a trope you've put your own spin on and lifting plot elements from a series, changing a few words and calling it a day. By the same token, I'm not against killing off major characters, no matter when it's done. I love that toku is completely unafraid to let its heroes (or sympathetic villains) die. But like you said, they have to set up for it. You can't just kill off any character and get an instant touching moment.

At this point, it's clear the issue isn't with the series writers, since the exact same problems have happened with completely different writing teams, full of people who've done great toku work in the past. I'm guessing a few higher ups are saying "do what W did, people loved that" while completely missing why episode 48 was so perfect. Shou and Philip being two halves of a whole was the defining element of the show, and Shou's worries that he was the weaker half of W and his desire to live up to the legacy of his mentor were themes introduced in the very first episode and carried through throughout the entire show. Doing what they did is meaningless without that. The Kaoru plot twist took me completely by surprise, and it was extremely effective, but it worked so well because when you look back you can see how they foreshadowed it throughout the entire series. If another series tried to dump it in, it'd just feel cheap. I know you know this, I just need to rant. ;)

I can definitely see Go-Busters being a new direction for sentai, and I hope that winds up being a good thing. I feel like Rider could have learned from W in wonderful ways. Fuuto felt like a real character, and I would have loved it if they'd put that much work into future rider cities. I loved that Skull felt like an integral part of the show even though he was technically a movie rider who died in the first episode. It would have been fantastic to see them try to make future movie riders feel significant in the same way. Weirdly, the biggest failing of post-W Rider seems to be W's greatest success - that it carefully worked to craft and build its story from beginning to end. I don't really know what kind of reception recent Rider has been getting in Japan, just that toy sales have been fantastic and that Fourze's ratings were really low, but I hope they've learned enough that Wizard can be a better direction for the franchise, and that they don't make the same mistakes with Sentai.

He got it wrong. It made his childhood great! Terror is so much fun as a kid.

It’s true that they did have Kengo being an infirmary mainstay, but for as long as that went on I kept wanting it to pay off to something. I don’t know if they explained why being a core baby made him that way, because I haven’t seen the last two episodes, but like you said, that doesn’t really come as a logical conclusion from his health problems (without knowledge I don’t have). I read about how the Miu/Shun thing ended and all I can say is BOO. Fucking boo. Tie in to the new show. Seriously? Resolve that shit. I don’t care if she just turns him down as long as they had a bit of dialogue about finding the right person or some shit. Not a gimmicky tie in. Cherry on the Miu shit-cake, for me.

I definitely think all my favorites at least had one eye on the long-term. Buredoran comes around and smacks you in the face. I learned that Shuki and Dosm never bothered to watch the show and that’s pretty inexcusable in my eyes. They wove that string through three disperate factions and pulled that shit together masterfully at the end. It rewards viewers for sticking around to the end, unlike OOO and Fourze, which fizzle and fall to shit.

OOO wasted their money on form finishers once they appeared in the show, and ended with a fucking box in the sky. Fourze established a good rider system and threw it in the garbage exactly when it became its most useful. I have never seen a more pathetically executed final form.

W has always struck me as being meticulously crafted. They made out of order movies and they still worked flawlessly. I haven’t felt that level of care since.

I could honestly ramble forever about how well done W is, even though I know you and Doc are well aware of its wonders. :laugh: Even all the wordplay is brilliant! Half-boiled, Hidari and Raito, even the title itself.

I love that Shou spends so much of the series trying to live up to his stoic, cool, hardboiled ideal even though he's all heart, that Kamen Rider Italy Cyclone/Accel Xtreme was conceived to be the perfect blending of brains and brawn, and that Shou, the Joker, the wild card, ultimately saved the day and lived up to his mentor's legacy thanks to the strength of his heart. It's made even better by the fact Soukichi was pretty half-boiled too, even though he hid it a lot better. It's just magic.

The Miu/Shun stuff was enraging. I don't know why they even bothered. They should have just dropped it like they dropped half the plotlines in the show. I feel like almost every character was either reduced to comic relief or basically ignored. Sometimes both.

They didn't do much to explain the Kengo stuff at all. I actually feel like some stuff might be conflict with things they said in earlier episodes, but I'd have to rewatch to check and I don't feel like that right now. Kengo always seemed ill and not just weak, and they didn't seem to acknowledge that. It makes me feel like they were initially going for something else. I wonder if we'll find out about behind the scenes drama later on.

edit'd because I just remembered Fourze kinda did the same thing with SOLU too. That really makes it seem like the Core Baby thing was unplanned.

It was a rare case where the fan translation was officially sanctioned by the game creator (they're even mentioned in the game). The translators got clearance to offer a download version through their site that works with their patch. Still kind of pricey for the whole game, but it's really long and I wanted to support what they were doing.

I knew getting back in the "dating game" would be a challenge after being out of it for over 5 years. When I was released from Joliet, I had to learn all the new things "the dating crowd" was trying. I knew about scented candles and Luther Vandross CDs, and sure was glad to hear people still use them. But I had no idea that "lube" was so popular with the "romantics" out there. All it took was one stroll through the Walgreens personal hygiene aisle to prove I had to learn a new thing.

"Where to start?", I wondered. I wanted something simple. However, all I saw in the stores were lubricants that were flavored with cinnamon and paprika, or designed to somehow "heat" your private parts. No way, Jose! (I experienced the "heat" thing personally once after an adventurous incident with a toaster. I'll stick with "room temperature" from now on, thank you very much.)

Luckily, I found a plain, old-fashioned lubricant that would not make me smell like a dessert topping. And it came in this HUGE tub! No more awkward late-night Walgreens runs for me, once I could get my hands on this lubricant bin. Now, I admit the price tag was kinda hefty. But after selling the ol' Pontiac Sunfire and borrowing some cash from Aunt Gladys, I was "ready to place my order."

The product only took a week to arrive, and got to my apartment just in time for my first real "date" since the gas station incident. You can bet I was nervous for this one. When I got off the bus to meet Carla in front of the Chili's, I just about had a heart attack! The only thing keeping me calm was knowing that I could not possibly run out of lube that night. I gave Carla a reassuring nod and smile, as if to say "Don't worry, Carla, I have plenty of lubricant for later."

The dinner was great, and after knocking back a couple Mojo Mango Margaritas, we were ready to head back to my apartment. I winked and told Carla, "Let's SLIP on out of here," to see if she understood the lubricant lingo. I think she did. Throughout the bus ride back, I grinned and hummed Luther Vandross tunes to set the mood.

When we got to my place, I already had a candle burning. It was by "Glade", which I think you pronounce like the singer Sade, because it is an exotic candle that smells just like real pine. After we got comfortable, I asked Carla if she could help me with the lube. She looked at me weird, and I couldn't tell if it was because she thought it was "too soon" or because I was pushing a mechanical lift to get the drum barrel out of the storage closet.

So I "took the initiative", as women like men to do, and rolled the barrel out into the living room. "Ready to tap the keg?" I joked, and by "keg" I meant "55-gallon barrel of personal lubricant." She looked at me all shocked, and said "That's it, I'm out of here!" I asked why, since she didn't need to run to Walgreens for more lubricant - there was plenty right here. But she didn't answer, and got up to leave anyway. Then, as Carla was about to pass me and the barrel, she tripped on my dog Poochie and fell right into the lube barrel! The force of the impact downed the barrel and knocked its lid off, sending 55 gallons of water-based lubricant across my faux-hardwood floors.

Carla was completely drenched, and her momentum slid her to the front door - which she somehow managed to pry open with a pair of oven mitts. The last thing I knew, "No-Fun Carla" was screaming profanities and sliding down three flights of steps. I didn't pay much attention because I was too busy trying to salvage the lube. I managed to get about half of it back into the barrel - the other half probably seeped into Mrs. Pulaski's unit below me. I never bothered to ask if she appreciated the free gift of lubricant.

Anyway, despite my "user error", I was quite pleased with the product. These days it's hard to find 55 gallons of scent-free water-based lubricant, and you can find it right here at a discount rate! I had to give it only "4 Stars" because it didn't come with a lifting apparatus. I had to buy my own mechanical lift separately to haul the bin to my future "dates". So if you're ready for fun, "slide" on down to a high quality product at a bargain price!
