It's also worth mentioning that a certain monstrously big Capcom RPG franchise- maybe even their most profitable franchise period?- hasn't made much of an impact here.

But they have Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Dead Rising, Street Fighter...they're in good shape. Which makes Inafune's comments weirder, really. There are Japanese companies (Compile Heart) that pretty much rely on moe to sell games, and I think several developers have were late to the game in making changes. But Capcom hasn't had major problems, unless he had a lot of behind the scenes disputes.

I really wonder what went wrong there. I'm pretty anti-MMO these days and I was looking forward to it in spite of myself, but it really sounds like it was in awful shape. I wanted them to create a game that used what they learned from XI, since I loved the world and general environment of XI (how nice everyone was, especially), but I had some complaints with the game itself.

Releasing the FF MMOs as part of the numbered series was a huge risk. It wasn't too damaging for XI, since it did well (though I think it caused the FF series to lose momentum a bit, in retrospect), but it's obviously a huge problem here. Wouldn't have been the same if it was Final Fantasy Online II, you know?

I used to have that problem. Then they were stolen and for some retarded reason I sold my Saturn on eBay. Now all I have is a GC my brother left when he moved and an original Xbox I borrowed.

Still works, for the most part, but I ended up boxing it (yep, still the original box) when I get a slim for Xmas.


I have my slim looked up to my HDTV and while SOME games to look pretty bad on it, it's not like I play Skygunner for the OMG IT'S MAKING ME CUM graphics to start with.

I also have a special setting for the PS2 that shrinks the TV size to box and makes it look a little nice - had to do some twinking till it 'worked'.

Yep! Both models of PS2 can do it, too.

My big tv automatically adjusts the resolution. Plus, it has different settings profiles for each input. So, I don't have to manually turn down the sharpness for PS2, and turn it back up, again and again.

Many of the PS3 games are region free. :awsm: The consoles are locked but the games aren't. It'll work unless it specifically says on the back that it's locked to Region B.

Monster Hunter, yup. It's a massive franchise in Japan. It's a big console mover too, they released a version for the 360, and for a while, it was actually up there on Japan's sales charts. It'd had a pretty tiny market share there prior to that.

Here, it's a niche game, and a lot of them don't even get released! I'll probably get it for my PSP, as long as I can try it out first.


There isn't really a divide in fighters like there is rpgs so I don't see that happening :laugh:

If you go back, I don't know, 10 years ago, Japan completely dominated RPGs, and western RPGs didn't have anything resembling the presence they have now. If you'd asked me to name a western RPG, I would've said Wizardry* or Gauntlet. It doesn't take long for things to really change. But I hope they don't, because the name J-Fighters really is stupid.

Is Mortal Kombat the only major western fighting game series that's still around? Glad to know all fighting games suck and Mortal Kombat is the beacon of hope. :laugh:

I watched many many hours of Mass Effect 2. It was painful. People say it's worth it for the plot. If you want to know the plot watch Babylon 5. Seriously. JMS should have sued their ass.

Dragon Age had a wholly unoriginal plot too. It's not a big deal to me. I remember when it came out, some people said part of the fun was that the story was so cliche, and I can complete understand that feeling. I have fun with that too. It's that Bioware and other companies get praise poured upon them for these plots, and Japanese games get raked over the coals. If you like the cliches better in western games, that's fine- I just wish they'd admit that instead of this farce where games made by certain publishers continually get certain scores, and any excuse is taken to rip apart many other franchises. It's not even just an east versus west thing- like Neg pointed out lord knows how many pages ago, Nintendo sometimes gets a pass too.

Save the bile for the games that really deserve it. It's more fun that way. And try to find a way to give a fair review to any game regardless of who published it. That's really all they need to do. Too much to ask. ;)

Totally piggybacking here but the more I think about it, the more I resent the idea that Japan should be trying to cater to Western gamers. Japan is a massive video game market, one of the biggest in the whole world. There are Japanese franchises that have global appeal, and should do all they can to maintain that, but Japanese gamers are a big audience, and they shouldn't be ignored in the hopes of capturing the elusive western audience. There's not a lot of effort on the part of western developers to win over the Japanese audience, in spite of what a big market they are, and some games still manage to be a big success over there.

Maybe everybody should just make the games they want to make and leave it up to marketers to figure out how to sell the game.

I like being outside for periods of time, but I just don't get the appeal of camping. I've had people tell me I would have a great time if I went with them, but they never got me to go. I went when I was a kid. I slept in a little bed thing in an RV. And then we left the next day because they didn't have outlets for my mom's hair dryer. Ah, the rustic life~

I would rather walk around outside with someone in the dark looking at how different everything looks, or just shooting the shit even, and then go back inside when that gets old. I'd take walking around all night after sleeping outside too. ;) As long as I had good people to talk to, anyway.

I tried camping once. there was the mother of all storms. One of my friend's tent must still be somewhere...down the mediteranean sea.

mine survived the onslaught. heck, I had fixed it so hard to the ground we had to DIG the pitons or whatever the fuck it's called out of the ground.

but eh...my tent was the only one to not move from it's spot. :)

When we were vacationing in Yellowstone, we camped out for a few days there. It was fun. The cool wind was a nice contrast to my regular Junes (hot, humid, and tiring). Something about the mountains just gets me going. (Though Colorado's Pikes Peak is a son of a bitch to go up).

No no, most of that sounds pretty nice! It's more that I want to be able to go inside if I'm getting eaten alive by mosquitoes, or if it suddenly gets cold or something else unpleasant. And I want to sleep inside! I know my one friend who always wanted me to go camping with him slept in his station wagon when he went, I could deal with that. I'd just stay up all night if I had to sleep outside outside. And I'd be bummed no one wanted to stay up with me. :laugh:

I prefer modern camping with trailers with air conditioning, TV, and all the good things.

I have roughed it enough times, but we live in the 21st century, compromises can be made.

I loved getting up at 11 or 12.....and go floating on the lake in the sun.

The sounds.......so....tranquil.

Fire crackling, birds or frogs chirping away, your friends on the shore happily babbling away, the slight waves of a mountain lake......crackling fires maybe........

Then go for an afternoon walk......late afternoon rest......dinner, then break out the fire, drinks, guitars, music, boardgames or whatever.

I can't see how that's not appealing.

The islands are nice. The most dangerous thing there would be running into Sparky.

Never had any problems with the wildlife, but the occasional mountain lion does roam these parts. Though last time I went, we had a bunch of rifles, shotguns and pistols so it may not have been to big a deal if one wanted to start some shit.
Not a gun nut, just testing a friends WW2 era rifles plus a handful of modern stuff. I did ok with the rifles. Mosin was a bit sticky. Had to pull with my left hand to get it cocked sometimes. I could not hit shit with the Glock though. felt like an animal trying to wriggle out of my hands. Also made the CD player in the cabin skip everytime it was fired.


When we were vacationing in Yellowstone, we camped out for a few days there. It was fun. The cool wind was a nice contrast to my regular Junes (hot, humid, and tiring). Something about the mountains just gets me going. (Though Colorado's Pikes Peak is a son of a bitch to go up).

I live that shit. You get used to it and forget about it until some city dwellers visit and realize they have never seen stars before.

Just you washing away in the ocean, bloating up, fishies nipping at your nipples and a possible "she's dead...wrapped in plastic" scenario a few days later.

Quite a quaint little Pacific Northwest way to go. :)
