The only similarities I can see between Geki and Go-Busters is the quirkiness. Of course, I haven't watched Geki, so it may very well have the heart. All I'm thinking of is Jan's made up language and how annoying that is to me.

Toys are technically more important than ratings. Well, actually, but I'm covering my ass. Pretty sure Goseiger had horrible ratings and sales. Think I remember reading Shinkenger had good toy sales. I imagine it had both.

Gokaiger is the oddity. It really does seem like Americans liked it more, which is ironic and telling.

If I were going to say which series went against type in the last 5 years it'd be Go-Busters and Goseiger. The Goseiger/Gokaiger dynamic will always piss me off. You're hating and loving the wrong series, people. Get your shit together.

Goseiger's mech line, for as simple as it appears gives you the most freedom, by FAR. That I was able to build a satisfactory ultimate mech to my own tastes is testament to that. Gekiranger and Gokaiger have the worst lines. Even Gokaiger fans like Shuki have come out and said they were disappointed with the nerfed line. The combination with your sixth is an arm swap that takes out two members? Fuck off. Your ultimate mech uses a giant fictional engine from an entirely different series? It precludes 4 members? :facepalm:

Having a main team member be a switch-out is inexcusable. That's summer movie shit, and Geki thought that was okay to pull in their main line. NO.

The five year model is a pretty interesting way to think about it. There have been high fucking highs and low low low fucking lows in both storytelling and engineering.

I don't know why they invest so much into Mars. It's not like the face on there is going to change or the water is going to evaporate any time soon.
The real reason to explore Mars or the Moon is not necessarily the journey itself. It's all the crap you invent in order to be able to explore. An assload of technology came out the Apollo program. The stuff that comes out of this program won't find a commercial application until years from now. And we won't immediately know what it is or what it will be good for.
But we'll get it the same.
And the amount of money spent on the program is a drop in the bucket to develop a lot of this stuff separately.

Because on the Moon there is no air to rip the camera off the mount.
Because on the Moon, it was possible to have the camera deployed before it landed. In this case it's folded away to provide clearance for the sky crane that lowers it to the ground.
Because on the Moon, it's being flown by a human crew directly present and on Mars it's a robot and they don't want to tax the operating system, or risk any kind of a software conflicts during what is already the most batshit crazy thing NASA's ever tried. (And I'm counting using a helicopter piloted by a Hollywood stuntman to catch a probe returning from a comet.)
Even now, the first pictures coming back aren't for the general public; they're boring pictures of it's feet, so it can see how it's sitting on the ground. Because right now the boring shit is more important to make sure the damn thing works as planned.

actually, the camera on the lunar lander was fixed, nobody controlled it.
You still have to convert the image into a signal, then beam it with the rest of the telemetry heading back to Earth. Which leads to a bigger issue, the antenna, which is big, has to be deployed and aimed properly to get a signal back, which is hard enough given the distances involved, and tougher giving that it's on an object moving in an unpredictable manner.
The point is, they have more important priorities then keeping you amused.

That's why I like The Assassination Of Jesse James. It's one of the first mainstream American films to really expose American hero worship for what it really is. An interesting study of celebrity obsession that's relevant in this day and age too.

448 -> 640 has no significant difference.
Even though 640 is supposed to be transparent, that doesn't stop it from having the DRC and other doodads intertwined into the AC3.


BD's with less-than-par audio specifications get bought last.

Total Recall got a new blu transfer recently. It has a big sticker that says "Verhoven approved". Looks sexy.

I'll grab it when it gets cheaper. Shouldn't take long.

I haven't noticed that any of the dvds I have look bad. Or sound bad.

I realized quickly I couldn't tell much difference in blurays. My wallet is very happy for this.

Starship Troopers

I bought ST on BD. The quality looks a tad better than the DVD version.
Some DNR though. The edges and whatnot.

Overall video quality is improved over the DVD.
The audio quality is very much improved.
You can really hear them bugs comin' up from the ground.

Tri-Star does just "okay" transfers with their movies.
If it's not DNR issues, it's the color timing.
Charlie's Angels has the worst color timing, too much color and hues.

Starship Troopers comes out very decently like The Fifth Element.


For fun, you can rip them and run them through AviSynth with some filters, and VirtualDub to master your own DVD copy.
Charlie's Angels will be getting a proper transfer soon.

The other two movies, I'm not too sure.
Total Recall is another $10 movie, but I got it on DVD, so it's last priority.

Robocop is only available in the boxsets here :notgood:

Watching the 2009 BD release of Natural Born Killers and the special features are really nice.
You get the strongest feeling ever that Stone really hates the media commercialism that plagues the world :laugh:

It really adds emphasis to the Knox's VS Gayle.
The final scene of the movie is just so much more spectacular.

That movie is really hard to keep up with. Not as in story or character.
But as in style. There's a shitload of camera work that's just fantastical and develops a character of its own.
It's really amazing when you actually sit there and watch it as a movie as apposed to what most kids today will watch it as: glorified murder porn.

The rest of the special features on the BD are the same as the VHS/DVD. I remember the part where everyone talks about how crazy Stone keeps the set in between takes with loud, blaring music.

I think about the only revisiting of this movie is the "How Would It All Go Down Now?" where they do a funny little run about the Knox's being on Twitter and Facebook :laugh: "Look what I did :)" *regarding Mallory and the gas jockey*

As mentionned yesterday, Went on a daytrip to Paris today.

Saw the sights. I have to say, any european capital I've seen yet is dwarfed by Paris when it comes to luxury, elegance, and high prices. Went to finally see the museum on primitive arts (a fairly recent museum). Really interesting, what with the reduced heads, various primitive weaponry, ceremonial masks and so on. really, really interesting. bought a few books on various subject at the museum library. got my change nearly thrown at my face by the fucktarded cashier. too bad. everybody in the museum was pretty cool; save for that asshole. nearly ruined the whole visit.

when on to check out the main avenues (around the Opera Garnier). found a shop called "Book Off".

the whole damn shop only had Japanese stuff. CDs, DVDs, Artbooks, novels...everything japanese. Bought some CDs, killed my monthly budget single handedly, even if it was much cheaper than in other places because every single article was second hand. Still I'm a happy Docrate. I need to get some money, and go back. SO many OSTs. Final Fantasy. Gundam. lots of others. Tokus too. Neg would have been pleased, they had a whole bunch of that Kamen Rider stuff Neg and Ndi are always babbling about. on DVD.
