I don't find this list fair. It seems to argue that there is something using the fonts they are stuck with. In web design especially, to use fonts other than the standards (except as graphics,) is to risk compatibility issues with the end users.
Times New Roman is used a lot because it is fucking bullet proof. It and Arial do exactly what they are suppose to do for body text; have something with high readability under almost all circumstances.
With logos you have more room, but there are still occasions when the classics work.
I have a friend of mine who is a professional graphic designer who swears by Helvetica. It is goto body text, and often works its way into headlines.
My default body text is Garamond. My backup is Book Antiqua. My preferred sans serif is Verdana. I also like Eterna.
I have used Impact on some logos, but it depends on the specific requirements of the design.
I almost never use Papyrus.
I've grown to loathe Comic Sans, not because it is overused, but because it is wishy washy. No matter what application I might want to use it for, there is usually another font that works better. There are still rare occasions I use it in webpages, when neither Times New Roman or Arial will work. I bear no ill will to those who use it.
I would use Bank Gothic before I would use Copperplate, but neither is a bad font. Copperplate has weight issues that make it, like Comics Sans, usually not quite right. To this general category I would add Brush Script and Courier. None of them are bad...they're just not great. I don't consider it lazy to use them (although at this point I rarely do,) but better fonts are hard to come by. For every 10 situations where 1 might use Courier, to solve the problem better might require 7 fonts (including staying with Courier.) Unless you have a lot of fonts, I mean a lot of them, as well as a way to sort through them effectively, going with the best solution may not be an option.
In fact, I question the basic premise of an overused font. A font is appropriate or it is not...It could be used millions of times a day, but if it is the right choice, it is not overused. A badly designed font is overused if it used once.

for the record, i fucking love/hate helvetica. i love it because it's classic and almost perfect in its neutrality. there's little that could be done to improve it.
but i hate it because it is so fucking overused. maybe it's timeless and hat's why we see it so much in advertising, but i feel that more often it is simply lazy designers because i've seen plenty of ads and logos where helvetica was used and it simply didn't work... as a body text, it has to be the original helvetica... you can't use condensed, neue ultra light, etc or it's too much strain on the eyes.

i grew to hate times new roman because i felt there were so many other similar "classic" fonts (most of which were available in windows and mac software) that were easier to read and also prettier to look at; yet professors insisted that this was the required font. why they couldn't choose a better default is beyond me. i feel i have to strain my eyes a bit too much to read it.

95% of my web text is either Arial with Times New Roman accents or Times New Roman with Arial accents. They are the only web fonts you need. Everything else can be saved for images.

I don't agree on the papyrus. it is not terrible, it is just terribly overused. Best use I've seen was as the title font for the texts in the Earthdawn RPG books. it holds itself quite well when used scarcely.

As for Comic sans...I don't care about it. problem with fonts isn't really what they look like, it's what they're used for.

Some people took that hard, but for the people there (even if I'm not their favorite son) and especially for people who were around since 99/00, it's far more about Matt himself being happy.
