Believe it or not some folks like to stick 'em in their mouth. :erm:

Delicious Chicken Feet Recipe - Food.com - 3110 (http://www.food.com/recipe/delicious-chicken-feet-3110)

having worked a butcher shop owned and operated by those chinese folk, lunches often involved chicken. big. surprise.
a few times there was chicken feet. boiled and stuff. i didn't pay attention to what they did.
but they served very ordinary. nothing extra. no sauce or anything elegant. just straight from the pot to the plate, like everything else in their cuisine that isn't from combo #3. bland. yet tasty.
i like chicken feet. the meaty part tastes just like chicken, but juicier. the bones are just like bones.
but very plain. the only thing really added was salt really. you can taste the salt. or maybe that's how chicken feet tastes like

I'm going to be taking care of my 2 1/2 year old niece for the afternoon.

It's a pretty shitty day out today so we'll be indoors.

I'm looking for a movie to put on....I was hoping to find one I hadn't seen in awhile but aren't sure about "scary" scenes.

Anybody remember if there's anything "scary" in Monsters, Inc.?

I don't really remember. Haven't seen it since theaters.

There always seems to be at least one thing unusually disturbing in Disney and/or Pixar films.

Why? Are they having a laugh about it or something?

Dr Faustus

I've only seen it once (absolutely loved it!) and you know how shit my memory is but I'd think it may be a bit scary for a 2 1/2 year old. She won't be able to balance the scary with the heartfelt moments so it'll be scares Vs funnies.

It'll be oh noes! and haw-haws!

And you may shed man tears at the end. :erm:

I'm going to be taking care of my 2 1/2 year old niece for the afternoon.

It's a pretty shitty day out today so we'll be indoors.

I'm looking for a movie to put on....I was hoping to find one I hadn't seen in awhile but aren't sure about "scary" scenes.

Anybody remember if there's anything "scary" in Monsters, Inc.?

I don't really remember. Haven't seen it since theaters.

There always seems to be at least one thing unusually disturbing in Disney and/or Pixar films.

Why? Are they having a laugh about it or something?

It scared my baby brother pretty bad back when it came out. Mostly Randall and the opening. He still liked it though, especially because of the end.

There's a lot of disturbing stuff in kid's movies in general, really. Put on a Pokemon movie for my nephews a while back and there was a dying Pokemon and they were sobbing. ; ; It turned out okay but I felt awful. And even the Scooby Doo movies used to make my brother cry! TV shows are safer.

Even the new Muppets movie had a feckin' nightmare scene. She looked freaked the first time.

I gave her the DVD and she's seen it 20 times since, so obviously she got used to that.

I thought about Totoro, but even then.....it's weird enough to be freaky.

All my cartoon movies are still a bit too old for her. Give her a year or two and they'll be fine.

weird. they also remind me british uniforms of the beginning of the 20th century. o_O
I can see that. British uniforms were more of an olive drab (whereas the Soviets stuck with brown for just about always,) and British caps had a rounded front instead of the oversized peaks on these, (which goes with the whole communist bloc oversized-hat-insecurity-thing.)

Woah woah woah....Back this shit up a sec..... 0-o

Are those from the first new Star Trek, or the upcoming second?

I dunno...If it's from the upcoming second...."I have a baaaad feeling about this.... :/"

Surprisingly, though, I thought the first new one was OK. But then, I also thought Star Trek- Enterprise was enjoyable too. I must be the black sheep of Star Trek fans.
This is from the new movie. The girl is playing Noel Clarke's daughter.
I liked Enterprise. Goofy stories, yes, but really solid character work. They did an episode called "Home" which felt like Tennessee Williams.

(yeah, CM Shablams, I kaboom.)

Back from my convention. lots and lots of miniatures.

First, CM miniatures: On all the con, I found one guy who knew of heritage miniatures. Told me they were worth around 30$ a blister, more if it's a character (Like the fellowship member.). those can sell for 40-50$, and more for the big sets. Yet 30$ a blister (you got 5), you could make a good 150$ on them on Ebay. maybe more. He told me, if you put them on Ebay, Don't start the auction under 25$.

So here you are. The guy even had one of your blisters on his stand, the Rohirrim archers. he sold them for 23€ (roughly 30$, but he was cutting 2€ off the price because it was a con. and the only blister he had for that brand )

Other than that, Took part in a LARP combat tournament, won two matches, lost the third one.

If you ever see me with an axe, run. seems I'm a natural with that thing. :169:

Bought a few books (one of my friends was there selling stuff, and he had some books he had taken specifically for me ! :awsm:) and a few miniatures. Soon I'll start to work on a remake of an old diorama I did close to 16 years ago. a cemetary where a bunch of skeletons are coming out of the tombs. the thing was really ugly back then, but i've got better tools and much better skills now. it'll be awesome...when I'll gather courage to work on that. :erm:

 We did that in grade 12. Arts & Crafts mixed with Stagecraft

I tried to make mine look like Princess Mononoke mask. But it didn't turn out right. Couldn't find those types of fluffiness for the edges.
So I cut up one of my stuffed bunnies (well the only one I had since childhood; it was huge), dissected it, dismembered it and used to for the back side of the mask. And the ears were used to hang lower from the jaw. they were twirled up and I used leather shoe lace to braid them until the very end where I left the ears inside out to show the white at the very tip. I couldn't get the face right either  The mouth came out all wrong. The eyes. The paint.
Instead it just looked like some tribal hunting mask. Or ritual murder mask

The teacher kept everyone's masks but she said I can take mine home. She was really creeped out by it. I got the highest marks in class for that project :awsm:
The other girls were creeped out by it, and when I told them it was my stuffed bunny, some of them cried. ; ; Bunny, I'm loving youuuuu~

---------- Post added at 12:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:00 PM ----------

what do you call the style that composers like Charlie Clouser, Paul Haslinger, Brian Reitzell and Tyler Bates use for their... sfx music?

It's like a lot of sound effects, remixed with a lot of reverb, stretching, phase shifting, etc etc.
Drones, rises, stings, ticking, and other stuff you would normally hear from trailers?

I call it sound design. not music.

NOT MUSIC !!

especially considering Bates is one fucking plagiarizing monster.

Haslinger music is generally worthless (he was better as a member of Tangerine Dream when they composed movie scores)

Don't know Brian Reitzell, so can't tell.

edit: 30 days of night :notgood:

Charlie Clouser...meh, when he wants to, he can do good stuff. The soundtracks to the first two "Saw" movies was interesting. At least there's a feeling in his work.

Bates...Bates managed to fuck up Conan. He managed to create the blandest score possible for Conan. something heard a hundred of times, especially in action or Sci fi movies. Conan is neither. So no. just....no.

Tyler Bates can, as Cuckoo would say, "Suck my fat titties".

Katara no moon bloodbended in the day time when she and Zuzu went after her mother's killer. We should also keep in mind that while Hama taught Katara bloodbending, others might have learned from her.

Nope, there was a full moon when she used it on the boat captain. When she confronted the actual killer, it was daytime and she didn't bloodbend.
Although I like the possibilities of other bloodbenders. I wouldn't think Katara would teach it considering how much she dislikes it, but who knows? Interesting...

That box is pretty full of win, considering how much I like Elek and Fire States.

CS Toys does indeed sell them individually. Same line my Ankh is from.

Think that's probably what I'm going to end up doing, unless I get a chance to get in on a box with other people. I'd be happy with almost that entire box though, so maybe I'll get one and see which extra you want if I have the money? Would suck to buy it and not get one of the KRC members though.

I think Tom meant that Hama could have taught other people? The Aang flashbacks confirmed the guy at the trial (presumably Yakone) was a bloodbender. I think it's very interesting that Katara hasn't been in any of those flashbacks. I think she's connected to this somehow. Yakone might've known she was a bloodbender.

Since so few people know anything about bloodbending even now, I think there's a LOT about it we don't know. It's interesting that most of the rare types of bending from Avatar (Metalbending, Lightningbending) seem to have become commonplace, while bloodbending is still as mysterious as ever. Again, this probably has to do with whatever happened with Aang and Team Avatar and Yakone.

Pretty sure we'll see a new type of Airbending in the finale. Fartbending doesn't count.

No, that's pretty close. I pretty much only watch HK subs for showa era Kamen Rider, which helps a lot. The shows are pretty simplistic, so limited Japanese knowledge + what you can figure out just by tone/looking at the screen make up for the weirdness of the show. Sometimes HK subs are on par with lower quality fansubs, sometimes you might as well be watching raws. It's a crapshoot. I'd be very wary of paying for them without getting a look at the sub quality. Could ask for some screens, that should be enough to tell. Terrible subs are usually gibberish from start to finish.

I would love to have W on DVD, though. ; ; Even an import with no subs would probably be nice. I know what the characters are saying anyways.

About Korra...

Haven't seen the latest episode, but as I suspected that Water tribe council member was a grade A+ Asshole, nothing much spoiled for me. As for Bloodbending not being common place, it's probably because most people would consider it "Evil". yes, the capital E is intended. Think of it this way: all bending aims to control an element, something relatively natural. Bloodbending allows one to control people gestures, and relies on their blood to work. I'm pretty sure Hama didn't "discover" blood magic so much as rediscovered it, and it isn't widely known, I guess, because it might be a forbidden technique. which implies the question: who taught the fucker ?

And what are the limits of bloodbending. It reminds me a bit of the magic variants in the Shadowrun RPG. Lots of magic, and only one truly forbidden: Blood magic. Wonder if the authors of Korra ever played my favorite RPG :itsamystery:

A new type of airbending ?

Breathbending. Using one's respiration to put him down. either by choking him, or controling the gazes inside his lungs.

It's better than what one of my friends was wondering about. he was wondering what beerbending could achieve.

:erm:

be back laters. gotta find a place for these books :D

They do have nice sets. And I think it's always hard to get the actors to actually make a demanding presence. It's even harder to find actors who can sing.
I like the cast, don't get me wrong. But I really don't know if they have the capacity.
In most movies I see, the cast, at best, can hold their end tones. No real vibratos. Which I think is very disappointing.
As much as I love Phantom and Gerard Butler, I've listend to the deluxe soundtrack and heard no real vibrato or stage presence in their vocals
Same kind of goes for Sweeney Todd :erm: Which I tend to overlook that little bit... :erm:

It was also in French. So me thinks any English translations would not be so accurate, no?

Docrate, have you ever stumbled upon translation of Les Miserables that was decent enough to recommend?

I imagine a version with cliff's notes in it would be helpful.

It's a classic, there are tons of great translated versions. Bad book translations are not that common, in my experience. A lot of my favorite books are translated and the differences between versions are usually really minor.

I've always wanted to add this to my collection.

I've read somewhere that the translation from Faust (German to English) is quite difficult to depict accurately as intended from the original transcripts.
Something about there being no English equivalent for some of the Germanic words used.

Hate that people won't play the Tales games because they look "anime". The battle system in Graces f is insanely good.

I've tried..... but when I find things wrong in a teaching book........ I tend to throw it on the ground......

The Japanese Coach on the DS is decent........ until it tries to make me learn symbols and won't let me skip the lesson.... When starting the game I should have said I know nothing.... instead it went "hey you know a bit........ skip 10 lessons...."

Learning to read in Japanese is pretty important for playing their games, though! Which is a shame because it's really difficult to learn. I wish they didn't focus on learning how to write stuff, though. I will never have any need for that.

The problem with all learning Japanese methods I've come across is that they want you to learn to read and write the symbols as soon as possible. That's bs! That's not how people learn languages. We learn by hearing and learning to say words and then amass tons of sentences.... then we learn how to read and write..... that process is so much easier than doing it the other way around.

Try looking for Pimsleur's series.
They run "Teach Yourself" series.

"Pimsleur's Teach Yourself Japanese" and they have levels, Beginners, Advanced, etc.
They come with a book and a CD. They used to have tape cassettes, but upgraded technology.

You should be able to find PDF's accompanied by MP3's of the book series.

You go at your own pace. Not happy with moving on to chapter 2? Do chapter 1 again.
It has a really nice structure to learn the basics.

From saying hello, goodnight, counting to 10, addressing specific genders/age-groups/professionals, etc.

And how to say it depending on your gender, if it's applicable.

The audio really helps out. You repeat what they say.

I have on Pimsleur's TY series: Cantonese (two versions, one with a book and CD, the other just a book). and Beginner's Latin (2 versions, book+CD, just book).
I paid for them all.

I managed to download the Pimsleur somewhere for Japanese, varying levels.
I can have a looksie.

Aside from Pimsleur, one of the most notable language teaching venues out there is "Rosetta Stone".

---------- Post added at 07:00 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:58 PM ----------

You can find Rosetta Stone and Pimsleur on direct download sites, and possibly torrents.
DDL is easier though. Especially when combined with the awesome powers of JDOWNLOADER!!!

Like Lisa Marie before her, Helena Bonham Carter will be somewhere in every movie he makes until they break up. (And then, like Planet of the Apes, she and her replacement will both be in the same movie at once.)

I've scanned so much Victor Hugo my eyes started to bleed. I didn't have a chance to check it over carefully, but there have been tons of bad translations. 20,000 Leagues under the Sea was fucked up until about 30 years ago, Three Musketeers was largely available only in an expurgated version with all the sex cut out, not to mention the lesbian character from Count of Monte Cristo. The libretto for Die Fleidermaus was similarly toned down until relatively recently. The problem is the Victorian sensibilities of Victorian translators. Someone has to make the effort to start over from the original.
Ugh.
JonC

P.S. Everyone here seems to assume that even if the characters end up singing in the film, that it will be the actors actually doing it. A more common practice these days than in the past, but you do know that wasn't George Clooney singing in O' Brother, right?

4 is pronounced similar to the word for Death, so they have different words for 4, iirc. They don't have 4th floors just like we don't have 13th floors. See the original Silent Hill ;)
