I don't buy enough DVDs for big purges any more. Just TV series and maybe 2-3 movies a year. I did a huge huge purge a while back. There might be 1 or 2 movies I could part with, but it's not the same.

I buy crap films from the �1 store, watch them and then purge. Cheaper than a rental. They're not all crap, I've got some gems for �1. I got Last King of Scotland last week. And some great indie films that rental stores wouldn't give the time of day to. I also got the first 4 vols of the old X-Men cartoon . They had Animatrix and the first Nolan Batman yesterday. I have the Ani already and have already purged Bats once. :laugh:

There's no real dollar store in walking distance of me anymore. :( Just Family Dollar, which, despite its name, is not a dollar store. Just a "generally cheap goods" store.

They had bootlegs of Eraserhead and a proper version of the Twin Peaks pilot before they were officially re-released years ago.

Been watching LPs of the entire X series. The SNES entries after the original are serviceable, but even then they were showing signs of introducing way too damn much to the formula.

4 has horrible voice acting and begins the slide into shitty graphics. 5 onward starts with the stupid ass names for Mavericks. Duff McWhalen? Seriously? Plus Zero is always present and you have to start deciding between who will get what upgrades. 6 is a fucking mess of power-ups that can be missed entirely. 7 is 3D. 8 is too little too late. It looks OKAY.

Plus, the plot is insipid and navigators talk to you WAY. TOO. DAMN. MUCH. Just my two cents.

- Auvergne, in the center of France. Damn chilly in winter, lots of snow, but no sea. Frozen lakes though. never saw a penguin there. but I did see a couple fucking like rabbits in the snow. that was...impressive.

I have a bunch of X-Men tapes on VHS. I don't want to part with them, but I can't watch them and I don't plan on getting a VCR unless someone offers me one for free. Maybe I should send them to Rob, or something.

I would buy films from the Salvation Army if they ever had anything I wanted to watch. All bad romantic comedies, Christian cartoons that aren't Veggie Tales, and copies of Nothing But Trouble.

Don't get rid of VHS is they're in good condition. Sooner or later they'll be the new currency.
Tron (first movie) on VHS can sell for over 100$ online, in the right places, with the right crowd.
LotR original trilogy (not the EE) on VHS can easily sell for a shitload.
A few people who had those on VHS were looking online and seeing how much people are buying them for.

also the type of light. what's best for the eyes, LCD, LED, neon, incandescent, fluorescent, etc.
Are they shaded or direct exposure?
is it in line of sight, or peripheral?

How long is this to be done? do you turn the lights on suddenly, or slowly?

do you ever see natural light again?

these are all things to take into consideration and to be used variables in the math.

also drugs and/or alcohol play a major variable, calculate those first.

we grew up in a small town. when we finally got to the big city, all the eye doctors said we had crap doctors.
my mom's eye prescription was much worse than the small town docs said.
she had to slowly increase her prescription to what it should be. if she went straight to the new prescription, she'd go blind, migraines and who knows what else.

i find eye glasses, if needed, should be worn. or contact lenses.
i don't think eyes really get better without them.
i think they get worse, especially if it's the wrong prescription.

i've had about the same prescription for about 5, 10 years now, since i've moved into the big city.
wear glasses all day, even when i sleep sometimes.
same prescription exam after exam.

without the glasses, my brain would be working too hard to try and understand what i am supposed to see.

Mine are a good shape for my eyes I think........ they just got too tight without me knowing it :sad: With all the pain it caused to those specific nerves over the last few years, I just hope it didn't do anything permanently bad to my brain :erm:

Oh man. Had to stop. On a technical level, that's one of the reasons it won't be getting a 5. Don't personally care, though. That place is just oppressively unnerving, and it just keeps GOING and GOING.

Of course this is why it ultimately succeeds. They didn't design it as a handheld title. They said fuck it and went all out. I'm spoilering the whole nut at this point :sad:

I usually get new lenses every 3-5 years....... the only problem that I just realized this year though...... I never get new frames... I love the ones I have and I hate all the new ones because they look nothing like mine. :sad: I've had these same frames for *counts fingers*...... a long time.

I get new frames every 3 or 4 years.

I wear glasses most of the time but wear contact lenses at work or if I'm going on out for a night the town.

Silent Hill Origins (2007)



Genre: Survival-Horror, Action | Players: 1 | Developer: Climax Studios


Bringing a survival-horror franchise to a handheld is a very thin tight-wire to walk, and Silent Hill Origins does it with a fair amount of aplomb. Still, it does come relatively close to slipping off. Fortunately, its missteps only break the rules of handheld gaming convenience, and not the game itself. If all of the 4 main areas had lasted as long as the introductory trip through Alchemilla, this would have been a perfect on-the-go experience. However, I think this would have also been rather disappointing. The designers must have realized this themselves, as the rest are around two to four times as long.

As strange as it may sound, I really think it works in the game�s favor that it doesn�t feel like it was designed for the small screen. I�d rather suffer infrequent opportunities to save than a game filled with areas explored only on a surface level. Much of the depth here is thanks to a new mechanic that allows players to switch between misty and nightmare sides on command, through the use of mirrors. This is much akin to A Link to the Past and the Constantine licensed game.

Besides this mechanic, the only true gameplay differences between Origins and the original �trilogy� of games are that Travis is a competent bare-knuckle brawler and his weapons, though very numerous, break rather quickly. There are so many littered around the environments, in fact, that this never feels like a hinderance. Even if you break all that you have available (and use up all your ammo), Travis is still perfectly capable of dusting enemies with his own two fists.

Thankfully, for those who find the series� 10-star system overwhelming, Travis�s achievements are broken into discrete accolades that can be completed over as many playthroughs as necessary. These all unlock weapons and costumes (some with their own tangible benefits!).

On the story-front, Origins--appropriately, given the nature of the number 0--plays like both an Even and an Odd entry. Travis�s interactions with Alessa demonstrate the events leading up to the original game, and yet there is a VERY strong emphasis on Travis himself.

Even if it brings into question the appropriateness of this game being on a handheld, I still believe that a little annoyance in terms of when you can save is a small price to pay to take this splendid trip.

Buyer�s Guide: Originally available only on PSP, Origins eventually found its way onto the PS2. While the graphics are crisper and have more care put into them on the PSP, it is still cheaper and far more practical to track down a copy of the port if you don�t own the nefarious handheld. From my experience, it�s better to hunt for this game online these days, in either form.

The American psychologist Martin Seligman's foundational experiments and theory of learned helplessness began at University of Pennsylvania in 1967, as an extension of his interest in depression. Quite by accident, Seligman and colleagues discovered that the conditioning of dogs led to outcomes that opposed the predictions of B.F. Skinner's behaviorism, then a leading psychological theory.

Experiment - Summary

In the learned helplessness experiment an animal is repeatedly hurt by an adverse stimulus which it cannot escape.
Eventually the animal will stop trying to avoid the pain and behave as if it is utterly helpless to change the situation.
Finally, when opportunities to escape are presented, this learned helplessness prevents any action. The only coping mechanism the animal uses is to be stoical and put up with the discomfort, not expending energy getting worked up about the adverse stimulus.

Experiment - Detail (Caution: Not for furrie lovers~)

In Part 1 of Seligman and Steve Maier's experiment, three groups of dogs were placed in harnesses. Group 1 dogs were simply put in the harnesses for a period of time and later released. Groups 2 and 3 consisted of "yoked pairs." A dog in Group 2 would be intentionally subjected to pain by being given electric shocks, which the dog could end by pressing a lever. A Group 3 dog was wired in parallel with a Group 2 dog, receiving shocks of identical intensity and duration, but his lever didn't stop the electric shocks. To a dog in Group 3, it seemed that the shock ended at random, because it was his paired dog in Group 2 that was causing it to stop. For Group 3 dogs, the shock was apparently "inescapable." Group 1 and Group 2 dogs quickly recovered from the experience, but Group 3 dogs learned to be helpless, and exhibited symptoms similar to chronic clinical depression.

In Part 2 of the Seligman and Maier experiment, these three groups of dogs were tested in a shuttle-box apparatus, in which the dogs could escape electric shocks by jumping over a low partition. For the most part, the Group 3 dogs, who had previously learned that nothing they did had any effect on the shocks, simply lay down passively and whined. Even though they could have easily escaped the shocks, the dogs didn't try.
In a second experiment later that year, Overmier and Seligman ruled out the possibility that the Group 3 dogs learned some behavior in Part 1 of the experiment, while they were struggling in the harnesses against the "inescapable shocks," that somehow interfered with what would have been their normal, successful behavior of escaping from the shocks in Part 2. The Group 3 dogs were immobilized with a paralyzing drug (Curare), and underwent a procedure similar to that in Part 1 of the Seligman and Maier experiment. A similar Part 2 in the shuttle-box was also undertaken in this experiment, and the Group 3 dogs exhibited the same "helpless" response.

However, not all of the dogs in Seligman's experiments became helpless. Of the roughly 150 dogs in experiments in the latter half of the 1960s, about one-third did not become helpless, but instead managed to find a way out of the unpleasant situation despite their past experience with it. The corresponding characteristic in humans has been found to correlate highly with optimism: an explanatory style that views the situation as other than personal, pervasive, or permanent. This distinction between people who adapt and those who break down under long-term psychological pressure was also studied in the 1950s in the context of brainwashing.

Like throwing depression into group hysteria.
