Ain't that the truth. On the D/L now.
Snow's hit some hard times now that he's out of work, huh :(
ahhh....i've never actually played that one yet.
Me neither. I was pissed that they left so much out. I'll likely get it when it hits platinum, though.

EDIT: The title of your Psycho suite is well funny, but I can't open it. It's not a zip or a RAR. What is it? Or was there an error in my D/L?
cuckoo77
10-17-2010, 11:24 PM
it's just a single MP3 file
that should work, shouldn't it?
Do i have to zip that up into a RAR, etc?
Dr Faustus
10-17-2010, 11:26 PM
It comes up as an unknown file format for me, and won't play via my player. I'll take it down again, maybe something went wrong.
MU says it's an octet-stream. Whatever the hell that is.
Mediafire accepts unzipped mp3 files so I would think Mu would.
cuckoo77
10-17-2010, 11:30 PM

This will be my Halloween contribution to STS for Halloween.......
Everyday, up until Halloween, I will be adding a new score suite I've edited together, from a Horror movie. I know, I know...put it in the Film Score threads.....fuck that....they piss and moan too much.
First up is Bernard Herrmann's string-scraping masterpiece, from the Alfred Hitchcock classic "Psycho".
Here, I used the re-recordings by Danny Elfman & Steve Bartek, adapted for the dismal shot-for-shot reamake by Gus Van Sant........

I enjoyed Back to Earth myself but it's not something I see myself buying so I can watch over and over. Watching it made me kind of want to see Coronation Street though, but only for Craig Charles.

There is a soap opera culture in the UK and Corrie is a part of that. It's the worst kind of television IMO and it's watched by millions. Eastenders. Oh, god! It's even worse. "The Greatest Love of All" is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation, dignity. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it's not too late to better ourselves. Since, Elizabeth, it's impossible in this world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves. It's an important message, crucial really. And it's beautifully stated on the album.

Speaking of Lynch, I just found an EP of the band from "Fire Walk With Me" that played in the raunchy Canadian club scene.
"A long-time pet project of film director David Lynch, Fox Bat Strategy features a cast of musicians who began collaborating with Lynch surrounding the filming of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. The same line-up of players appeared on Fire Walk With Me's two roadhouse cuts: "The Pink Room" and "Blue Frank" (as well as made cameos in the film itself). In 1994, these same musicians, with an invitation from Lynch, re-entered the studio for experimental collaboration. What emerged were these 6 tracks. For nearly fifteen years these songs have remained unreleased and unheard, slow-cooking in the ether of time, all the while retaining a uniquely modern sensibility. This release is a tribute to the album's late singer and guitarist Dave Jaurequi, who passed away suddenly in 2006."

And the thing is, if I wanted to deal with intolerably shit lives, I'd spend time with my family. I watch telly to escape that nonsense.
I genuinely think shows like Corrie and EastEnders and Emmerdale would be a lot more tolerable if they weren't so convoluted and, often, outright nasty. If there's a happy person in a prime time soap, rest assured they'll die or get raped or find themselves on the less appealing side of incest. Of course if you got rid of the rape and incest and murder, millions would switch off in droves. It's befuddling.

I have Poltergeist, The Shinning, & the newer Texas Chainsaw Massacre to watch next.
Poltergeist :) a classic......i caught that on TV when i was like 7 or 8.......nightmares for weeks.
The Shinning....Shining.....whatever the kids are calling it these days. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful movie. One of the best soundtracks ever.
and the new Texas movie? I actually liked that one.......haven't liked any of the other Mikey Bay produced horror remakes AT ALL....but this one, i liked for some reason.....R. Lee Ermey is perfect in this one.

well, Bay produced......the director is Marcus Nispel...he hadn't really done anything before that, besides the "Greedy Fly" music video for Bush and the "Small Victory" msuic video for Faith No More.
and the scriptwriter was Scott Kosar who went on to write "The Machinist" the following year....so that should be another saving point, right there.

I think I'll save to fav and watch it after reading the story. Most of Lovecraft is pretty short. Well Mountains of Madness aren't but it's still too short for a full novel.
Do you think the Katsuragi Expedition and 2nd Impact are homages to At the Mountains of Madness? Th Angels are very lovecraft when you think about it.

I would think the creator had read Lovecraft, he was very widely read in many genres.
John carpenter made a film with some very Lovecraftian themes, with Sam Neil. In the Mouth of Madness. I don't own it, it's always out of stock over here, not because it's popular but because it's in short supply. it needs a reissue.

I'd say even Del Toro is going to have a hard time making visuals that match End of Eva's sense of mind fucking doom. Of course Eva's cast was a nympho and 3 children so it's easier to feel for them than stuffy Victorians.

It's the quality of video that you have to find that's the problem. If I recall, it took me awhile to find the official "Psycho" trailer in a decent quality. Source: MetroDad: Birds, Bees & Butts (
http://metrodad.typepad.com/index/2010/10/birds-bees-butts.html)
The Peanut turned six last week (more on that in another post) and I'm quickly realizing that I can no longer answer her questions solely for the benefit of my own amusement. Her curiosity and intellect have reached a stage where the quest for knowledge must be gently nurtured and delicately handled.
Dealing with kids this age is a bit of a tightrope. You're never sure what they already know about a subject yet, at the same time, you don't want to fill their heads with information that might blow their tiny, little minds.
Nowhere is this more evident than when it comes to conversations about biology. Two recent conversations with my daughter have solidly driven that point home for me.
Witness...
Conversation #1
A week ago, the two of us were in a Chinese food coma and spaced out on the couch watching television. Suddenly, an image of a pregnant woman appears on the screen when the Peanut turns to me and says, “Daddy, how does the baby get out of the belly?”
Slightly panicking for a second, I remain calm enough to nonchalantly reply “When you see your mother tomorrow, ask her.”
“No, Daddy. I want you to tell me. I know how the baby gets in the belly. I just want to know how the baby gets out. Do they cut the belly open?”
Rembering the parenting adage of answering a child's questions as simply as possible, I reply “No, kiddo. The baby comes out of the woman’s vagina.”
Dead silence.
I pause for a moment but she doesn't appear to have any follow-up questions so we go back to watching television together. However, a minute later, I look out the corner of my eye and catch her peeking down her shorts and just staring at her vagina with the biggest look of bewilderment I've ever seen.
I had to keep from laughing my ass off so hard that I almost had an aneurysm!
Conversation #2
A few days later, my friend Erica's Jack Russell terrier gave birth to a litter of adorable puppies. The Peanut and I are on the subway and I'm showing her the latest batch of photos.
My daughter, with her fountain of newly-attained knowledge, turns to me and says in a very matter-of-fact voice, "Only female dogs can get pregnant and when they have babies, they come out of her vagina. Just like human women are the only ones who can get pregnant and give birth."
Normally I would have gently praised her for her intelligence. However, in this case, she followed it up by saying, "DID YOU KNOW THAT, DADDY? HUH? DID YOU? DID YOU? C'MON, DADDY. I CAN'T HEAR YOU. DID YOU KNOW THAT?"
So, in order to calm her down, I replied, "Listen, honey. I love you but you're six and you don't have ALL the answers. There's a very special subset of human men that are capable of having babies. Personally, I'm not biologically capable of getting pregnant or having babies. However, your Uncle Nelson is. In fact, he's pregnant right now. He's having a boy and if you want, we can go visit him in the hospital when it's time for the baby to be born."
Now let me just say that the Peanut and I log a lot of time together. She gets my sense of humor. In fact, at the tender age of six, she has already perfected the AER™ (Asian Eye Roll.) And 9 times out of 10, our conversations ususally end with her looking at me and saying, "For real? No way!"
In this case, she replied "Oh yeah? Well, how is the baby going to come out of his belly? Uncle Nelson doesn't have a vagina."
"Of course he doesn't have a vagina, kiddo. The baby is going to come out his butt."
Like any little kid, merely hearing the word "butt" is enough to send her into convulsions of laughter. Either way, I assumed the conversation was over and that she knew I was just kidding.
Fast forward an hour later when I'm dropping her off at her mother's house. As the two of them are catching up, I go to use the restroom. When I come out, BossLady looks like she's seen a ghost.
"Your brother and his girlfriend are having a baby? Holy crap. They don't even live together. What are your parents going to say? I'm totally in shock. I think I need to sit down."
Before I can explain, the Peanut blurts out "Hold on a second. That's not even the best part. His girlfriend isn't the one having the baby. Uncle Nelson is the one who is pregnant. And guess what? THE BABY IS GOING TO COME OUT HIS BUTT!"
Needless to say, I had some explaining to do.
Being a highly involved father of the new generation (oy vey!) I started researching online about how to explain Sex Ed to a first-grade child. I also began persusing the local bookstore to see if there were any books that the Peanut could read on her own. Turns out there's a bunch of readily available source material available.
I find all of this more than a little amusing, primarily because the only conversation that I ever had with my parents about Sex Ed was when I was 18 years old. I was headed out one night to meet up with my high-school girlfriend. My father was on the couch reading the NY Times. As I had one foot out the door, he briefly looks up from his paper and yells out, "Hey! You know about condoms, right?"
End of conversation.Thank you, Obi Wan Kenobi.
Talk to me, people. Any funny conversations with your kids about the birds and the bees? Or alternatively, any humorous stories about your parents trying to drop knowledge on you? Spill it.
An inquiring mind wants to know.
