As the first full length release for UK musician George Barnett, 17 Days is quite impressive. Beside the occasional special guest, all instruments and vocals are recorded by Barnett in various bedrooms and bathrooms and was initially released for free as a "fuck you" to copywriters as he owns all his masters and in his own words "can do whatever the fuck I want with them". Despite that it still sounds very professional and well put together. The tracklist covers various moods from happy go lucky pop to mournful introspection. While not all were my cup of tea they all felt good and best of all fresh which alone makes it worth some time.

Just a bad day perhaps. I had a few of those particularly with DSL. It could just be a network hiccup if it was just today or is it a frequent occurrence? In which case, call up the ISP and raise a stink about it.

I used to go to that island near my city. Doing pic-nic with my granny and grandpa. The beaches had white sand and a lot of funny scarabs. I have good memories of it.

I do notice a lot of film grain for the 28 movies. Even Weeks Later has film grain.
Though artistic... sometimes it's too much.

There was a few other movies I noticed that threw in film grain.

Converting them to DVD would be a masterful delight.
With the power of AviSynth, you'd be able to clean it up a bit, enhance it and remaster it for DVD.
It'd far surpass the DVD quality.

Especially when you can really customize the series yourself.
2 episodes per disc?
4? Feck, you can even do one episode per disc and achieve the highest quality.

With 1080p resolution, aviysnth tweaks, downscaling the frame with the proper filters (Spline64/144), the output video would make you cream yourself before you even get 5 minutes into the episode.

Figured out what was going wrong with the encodes I've been doing.

Firstly, I wasn't setting proper Aspect Ratios with the cropping I've been doing to get rid of the black borders.
I've forgotten about the golden rule of mod16.
:badpsarky: i know.

But, alas the most recent version of XMedia Recode has implemented the feature to change the modulus when changing the AR.

See, before this significant update, whenever you selected "Keep Aspect Ratio", it would. But when it takes the cropping into consideration, it doesn't keep the proper, legal modulus rules.

Now it's fixed and me brain can think better.

See, before I was doing BD to DVD, in which the programs prefer to work with the black bars. So no real problems there.
But I don't do too many smaller files like this. Especially from DVD to MKV/AVI/MP4.

The other issue I've been having is with the framerate.
It was choppy. Laggy, even.
For scenes that pan across landscapes, it was very obvious that the framerate encoding was off.

See, the issue is, that when ripping a DVD (bit-perfect) to a container (MKV) without any re-encoding (bit-perfect), it has issues with the framerate.
OR the programs have issues reading the Framerate mode.
They'll give standard reports like type: Progressive/Interlace and the Field Domination: Top/Bottom Field First (TFF/BFF) and as well as the rate: CFR/VFR.
HOWEVER most programs do not report whether or not it's telecined or not. :rolleyes:

So it naturally came to me, that since neither keeping the "original framerate" option nor the "29.97" option was working, I decided to encode at 24000/1001 ('FILM' FPS, 23.976~).
Success!!! I was able to achieve, paning, tilting and various panoramic shots without the stutter, the lag or visual discomfort.

This is something I have not put too much research into.
I mostly know it the other way around, to make 23.976 into a DVD compatible 29.97 format, WHILE keeping the original 23.976 rate.
InVerseTeleCine (IVTC). It's a flag for all DVD players to playback at 23.976 and report it as 29.97.
DVD's and TV's (NTSC-wise) are compatible with this technological modification.

I just haven't thought to think backwards about it :laugh:

So once I got that solved, I was able to finetune the movies to retain the most quality.

The video file (container) is an MP4.
The codecs are: video=avc/h264, audio=aac(stereo, downcovert 6ch to 2ch)

The h264 settings have been set to pretty much the maximum.
Slowest encode. But with my fastest laptop and a Hardware Accelerated DirecShow Filter, I was able to achieve results overnight.

Screencaps of original DVD rip (bit-perfect) and comparison screencaps of the final encoded product (fucking perfect) coming soon.
Uploading today, links will be ready by overnight/tomorrow.

Since the crop made it 720x408, the AR would be screwy. So when you watch it fullscreen, it'll be screwy.
Since I fixed everything, when you fullscreen, you'll get the black bars AND a proper AR.
See, the first way around, you'd have to get your media player to change the AR.

Which is okay.
HOWEVER, the encoded video at a wrong AR wouldn't look as good as an encoded video with a proper AR.
Since an improper AR would be all squishy-like, it encodes what you see, rather than what it's missing.
Were you correct the AR, the programs would have to guess what the missing data is. Although, it would do a decent job, but not as good as an encode where all pixels on-screen are encoded.

I remember we bought 6 Days, 7 Nights on DVD. Stupid thing was transferred to a 4:3 format while still being 16:9.
So it looked awfully screwy.
