Questions are good! Glad you're interested.

Kamen Rider doesn't have giant robots so much like they do with Super Sentai. There are a lot of variations from series to series, but the constant is that characters are able to transform and fight in a sort of power suit. In some series, the suits are organic, in others, they're mechanical, and sometimes, they're a combination of the two. The guys fighting are the guys in the powersuits. Sometimes their motorcycle is just a method of transportation, and other times, it does help them fight. A lot of fighting in Kamen Rider is weapons based, but there's definitely plenty of martial arts type fighting too.

There are a lot of franchises like this in Japan. Another big one is the Metal Heroes franchise, which provided footage for Big Bad Beetleborgs and VR Troopers here. They're called tokusatsu shows! Most of them are aimed at a young-ish audience, but some of them, like Garo, are for adults. Kamen Rider is a pretty iconic franchise in Japan, and it's fairly respected there, as opposed to how people see Power Rangers here. It's usually a huge career boost for an actor to appear on a Kamen Rider series.

I liked the black & white look because it seemed as if the world had fallen away and the relationship between the two was almost timeless.
I didn't think it would be as emotive in colour but it was. :D It was that strange washed out technicolour.

Gokaiger episode 8

A filler episode, almost completely skippable, but enjoyable nonetheless. Can't really say all that much about it, it was pretty hysterical at some moments, plus seeing the old suits like Denjiman and Goggle V was cool.

i wouldn't say COMPLETELY skippable, since at the beginning you get some back story on the characters.

also, also, joe was not sexy in his evil form. he's sexier in his good form, which is different. marvelous was pretty hot this episode though! not very ducklike at all.

Further, I can't believe they wasted an episode in such a manner when they say it themselves that they've only received 3 of the powers. This'll only lead to half-ass shenanigans even worse than the Geki Spirit Beasts bullshit.

Yeah, I'm really psyched for the next Joe centric episode now! Feel like they've set his character up really well, and I hope they follow through with that as the show progresses. I'm so ready for the story to kick into high gear.

I thought that whole bit was pretty great in general, even if nothing else was as interesting as what they said about Joe. It's just nice to learn a little more about the characters, and to get to see a little more of our villains, who I don't feel we've got to spend enough time with yet. I find Insarn to be pretty awesome even though she hasn't gotten to do all that much yet, so I hope they give her some good moments somewhere down the line.

Also, I loved the Don joke. He's so adorable. ; ;

I really enjoyed the start of the episode, and I thought the monster of the week seemed pretty interesting, so I was kind of disappointed that the episode (and the monster) didn't live up to that early promise. It wasn't bad or anything, but I felt like some of the humor wore out its welcome, and there wasn't always enough going on if you weren't into the funny stuff. If they hadn't tried to stretch some of the jokes so far and had spent more time building on the interesting stuff they introduced at the beginning, I think it could've been a great episode. As it was, it just felt like they didn't really have a whole episode there and tried to stretch stuff out to make up for it, and the episode desperately needed some kind of b-plot (looking for Navi doesn't count).

We did get more adorable Luca faces, though!



Plus, there was some fantastic fight choreography, for Joe especially. Excited to make gifs. And I loved Marvelous' gao~

Anyways, this was alright, but I hope things pick up next week. Don't want to spend half the episode waiting for them to fight already two weeks in a row!

I don't think Ahim being a princess is really a reveal, it's the first thing they said about her character before the show started.

I'm trying to judge villains by potential only after Goseiger. XD Really want them to start letting the villains do stuff, though. The show barely needs the main villain cast as it is right now. Might as well just have random monsters attacking! There's a lot to work with too, considering the villain background.

All she really does is make monsters grow. She's no Buredoran.

Well, Buredoran wasn't doing too much at this point in Goseiger either. If she even turns out to be half the villain he did, I will be pleased as punch~

Yeah, an episode like this is a lot more annoying when you're watching stuff weekly. Think the dark cooking arc in Kabuto would've driven me crazy if I'd watched the show when it aired. Would've been worse since it happens way further into the series, too! I really do like the experience of watching stuff as they go, but I get why a lot of people prefer to wait until series are finished, especially if they don't frequent places where spoilers are posted. There's no shortage of completed toku stuff out there to watch, at least. ^^ New stuff is always getting subbed too! Can't wait for Black to finally be finished.

Definitely think you can still be surprised watching an older series! The english speaking toku fanbase is just not all that big (cry), so mostly, you can just avoid Wikipedia. I've seen stuff spoilered via the toy community (youtube too, not just 4chan) occasionally, but usually not major stuff, and sometimes they've said stuff that's flat out wrong.

Not sure what I'm going to do. Could watch those OOO eps. Could watch Blade with Doc for the blog. Could watch Hibiki for some more Kenji Matsuda. Could watch Kabuto for some Hoppers.

These are all pretty awesome options! Rewatching Blade or watching Hibiki are probably the safer options if you don't want to want to buy lots of toys. Kabuto is my rabbit hole though, you know this, and Hibiki is supposed to be getting a Figuarts now.

See the Zeronos Legend Rider Series belt for a decent price all the time. There are some Kabuto RP toys I really want too, though, and I want to buy a lot of accessories for the characters. ; ;

I have music put into different folders. You may find it odd but it works for me.

Folder 1 is 'regular' band/artist music. Folder 2 is Film music. Folder 3 is Anime/Game music.

I'm probably not watching tonight because stuff is kind of hectic, but I wanted to make sure everyone interested knew about it!

I just want to say I understand your initial lack of excitement for Accel, now. You already knew Yuuto and Nago. Those are tough acts to follow, for sure.

Plus I know how much you love Gatack, too.

Accel just doesn't compare, in........comparison :ashine:

Terui's really grown on me a lot, re-watching W. I kind of feel like I had different expectations for him when he was first introduced. And watching the show without any notions like that in my mind made me appreciate more about him. Another of those weird things about watching a show as it airs, I suppose. W really does play well the second time around. It's such a well crafted series. ^^

I have a lot of secondary riders I love, it's true! Kamen Rider consistently has interesting heroes- I'm not a big fan of Agito, but a lot of people like him too- and I love that they take the time to give you strong and awesome characters while still putting so much effort into the show's supporting cast.

For me, the best series have been the ones where the secondary riders don't feel secondary at all. This is truest in Den-O, for me. Yuuto and Ryou feel very even keel to me, even though Yuuto wasn't introduced for the usual amount of time. This isn't because I think Ryou is in anyway less interesting or compelling. They just both feel super necessary to the plot.

Kiva doesn't feel like it has singular focal point, both because there are so many fully fleshed characters in addition to the riders, and also because I think they did a nice job of balancing Wataru, Otoya, and Nago. I feel like they hold the spotlight, but there's so many people on the stage with them, as well. Saga feels like a secondary rider and tbh the Arms monsters feel like a unit of secondaries. I really like that, though. I think they're wonderful and I loved seeing them henshin together and that they did that with everyone else, YOU KNOW WHEN.

Can't imagine Blade without the 4 of them. If someone wants to nitpick they'll say Tachibana and Mutsuki were the "B team" but they're so much of the plot. I'm biased, but I don't really care XD

Yes, yes, and I definitely had it in my head that Accel was going to be as integral to the shows as some of those other characters. That's definitely my preference too, a show that feels like a true ensemble cast. Hibiki is kind of like this without riders, just because Asumu sometimes plays a bigger role in the series than any of the riders! Ryuki definitely has its group of core characters too, and you could definitely make an argument that one of its riders is more of a main character than Shinji is. Kabuto really does give a good amount of time to all its characters, and even Drake and the Hoppers get a lot of quality story stuff.

In 555, Faiz is clearly the main rider, but the Orphenocs play such a major role, it's kind of like some of them are secondary riders? And Mari gets a lot of story too. Agito and G3 definitely drive the main story, and Gills and Dr. Another Agito have more of a secondary feel. Decade's very clearly the main rider too, which is a shame because Diend has some really interesting backstory. He got good story stuff in net movies and the manga so I think it was just the Decade behind the scenes stuff. IIRC the sea cucumber thing isn't even explained on the show itself. ONORE DIKKEDO!

I was talking about this with Rob, but I really love it when the monsters don't feel like monsters of the week. I much much much prefer it when they feel integral to the plot (or are at least organized).

Glad to hear 555 will be joining the ranks of W and Blade in that regard. I have HIGH HIGH hopes for 555 and that only adds to it.

There are definitely some monsters of the week even in 555, but they're often used to reveal crucial plot information or to give a better understanding of what the plight of Orphenocs is like. They really don't use them just to use them, and I think that contributed hugely to me getting sucked into the story like I did.

W and Blade really did do a great job with this. I really like the human connection to the monsters that W has. I know other series have done something like this- Den-O, OOO- but the way you saw a real person being twisted into something monstrous was just so compelling to me, and really helps me to remember all the dopants. Blade feels more monster of the week-ish very early on, but the Undead are just so interesting once you get into the later episodes. Really feel like they built on some of what they did with Kuuga. ^^

I definitely think some series have benefited from not putting as much focus on the monsters, though. I love that the monsters really can feel like terrifying horror movie creatures in Hibiki. I like that the riders are what drives the conflict of Ryuki, even though I'm not a huge fan of rider fights. I like that Agito and Kuuga put so much focus on the ways people were being killed, rather than the monsters, because it gave you a sense of how horrible it must be to live in a world where those kinds of attacks are going on. And Kuuga definitely did do some interesting stuff, later on!

I really hope there's a sentai series out there where the monsters of the week feel really important, or don't feel like monsters of the week. I feel like Magiranger is at least spending a lot of time on their villain crew early on. Buffy (I know it's not a toku show but tbh it feels similar to toku shows in a lot of ways) really had some memorable monsters. If they can give me something like the vamp in Conversations With Dead People or Der Kinderstod I would be pretty thrilled. ^^ Providing important character backstory, being compelling all on their own, and making for interesting fights is really all I ask!

Yes, Blade feels that way at the beginning, but even at that point it actually feels organized because right away you can say OOOH, What category and suit is it? It's not just a random bat creature. What power does it grant? What can it be combined with? When will this undead show up?

A pretty decent performance on the DVD. They seemed a little bored and/or tired at moments but halfway through a lot of the songs it was as if they suddenly remembered why they loved playing them so.

He's sorely underused in the colors trilogy too. :( Even though one of the movies is supposed to be about him! The Decade movie actually does have some Yuuto stuff that's decent, though. He deserves his own movie. ; ; Zeronos seems like a really popular rider, too! Well, in the US.

Like the turban look. Much more head movement compared to what it was.

There's something about the turban that feels off to me. I think it's how it's sort of pointed at the top of the head? But, that might not be so big a deal once I see more of it. It is indeed an improvement over the sketches.
