Anyone cook with those little red taters? I been thinking about trying to start myself up on em with the one particular health plan I found last year... Thing is I gotta eat a tater before bed but I can't use dairy or meat products and I have to eat the skin *ick* And taters have fiber so good time to start. I'm thinking putting some in a foil wrap and baking them..... but should I melt some margarine on them in the foil? Any herbs or anything?

I don't use foil when I bake potatoes. I rinse them, poke holes in them, and then coat them in olive oil + salt and pepper.

Red potatoes are not good baking potatoes. (Yukon Golds are what you're looking for there.) With Reds, you can steam them with the skins on, slice them up, and serve them with a little salt and pepper, and perhaps some olive oil. (And maybe some parsley.)

Some you can find in anaglyph (red/cyan, amber/blue, pink/mangenta) from people who took the 3D blu-ray and converted it to proper 3D anaglyph.
Or if the movie is initially released as anaglyph on DVD (My Bloody Valentine, Coraline, Amityville 3D, Jaws 3D, Freddy's Dead, Final Destination 5).

I'm more than willing to buy some glasses for anyone who wants to take on this feat :joker lightning:

I have: anaglyph: red/cyan and amber/blue. shutter glasses (came with Monsters VS Aliens blu-ray promo). and Pulfrich (2D-to-3D on the fly).

My favorite is using the Pulfrich Effect, as it requires no conversion or extra hardware (like a 3D-TV or a 3D-DVD/BD).

You can achieve the Pulfrich Effect by simply buying a cheap pair of sunglasses from the dollar store and popping out one of the lenses.
Watch a movie with those glasses and you will perceive a 3D effect.

What happens is that the darker content of the image is received last, while the brighter contents are received first.
Your brain converts this into a 3D effect, since light travels faster than dark, your eyes will see the difference, or "lag" of the two fields of contrast.

It's ideal if you give your pre-dominant eye the dark lense. You can always reverse the glasses to see which one gives you optimal effect.

The best scenes that work best with Pulfrich Effect are slow, panoramic scenes. Anything where objects move across the screen. Scenes that move in slow motion. Where shadows play a significant role. If the camera rotates around the object of focus.

Granted that the entire movie will not be in 3D, but the best scenes will definitely make their presence known to your brain. ;)

Most websites selling Pulfrich glasses (paper, plastic or metal framed if you're fancy-shmancy) will often say that these glasses are best for viewing sports events, as most sports programs have cameras in a stationary place while it pans from side to side. Whether it's football, soccer, hockey or tennis, you will definitely see the Pulfrich Effect as intended.

Other points of interest:
Some directors are extremely noteable in their directing techniques, how they love to move the camera. Peter Jackson is one such. JJ Abhrams is another. You get the idea.
Movies, especially older ones, where the CG is very discernible on-screen often tend to be slightly less noticeable through Pulfrich glasses. The CG edges are somewhat smoothed out as the animation occurs from frame to frame and the time-dilation of the Pulfrich Effect.
Of course, movies intended to be 3D in nature are always going to deliver satisfactory results.

Since, we're on the topic of technology...

Has anyone bought an AC adapter for a laptop that wasn't certified by the designated laptop?

Say, an HP laptop you got at a thrift store that's owned by the family and they ask if you wanted it because why not?
If it's an HP mini 1000 laptop with no official AC adapter.

I was searching online to see what replacements go for and have found mostly... :erm: Third-party replacements.
Not official HP products.

Here's where my concern comes in...

What HP sells at their official sites with official products have all been tested with their HP laptops to certification.
This means no fire hazards if you're sensible about how you manage and utilize said hardware.
Naturally a laptop sitting on a fuzzy or soft-fabric surface will eventually cause the laptop to generate more heat as the output fan is not circulating well enough.
Same goes for having the battery installed while the laptop is plugged into the wall via the AC adapter. This will cause the battery to charge constantly, even though it's plugged into the wall, there is still a constant charge going towards the battery as it is always fluctuating in power. This fluctuation tends to make the software installed for the laptop to think the battery is losing energy and needs to be recharged. This recharging process will, in return, cause the battery to think it's empty and begin to remove excess charges from the "normal" formula and further degrade your battery life.

You see, it doesn't matter if it's NiCad or Lithium, every battery has it's moments of weakness and "dementia" point. For Lithium, it's when the battery runs empty. For NiCad, it's when the battery still has some charge in it left.

Okay, I realize one of the statements above (This recharging process will, in return, cause the battery to think it's empty and begin to remove excess charges from the "normal" formula and further degrade your battery life.") is under the influence of alcohol...

Now, since the battery is receiving a recharge burst whilst plugged into the wall, your battery will generate heat. Just as your rechargeable batteries will generate heat (whether it's AA, AAA, C, D, etc). This heat will only add to the compound interest of the heat generated from the latop's functionality.

Say, you're watching a movie in x264. It will require more power to decode the movie and play it back normally without stutter or any other effects. This process is taxed by your CPU.

Which is why video cards are developing and improving upon their technology to implement "Hardware Acceleration". This process, on the video cards behalf, will reduce the payload on the CPU (believe me it helps). So instead of the CPU decoding the video, your video card is decoding the video, as it should be from the start.

All this can really reduce the temperature signatures from you laptop and prolong laptop life. Whether it's the CPU, video card or even the hard drive, your laptop will surely keep you satisfied with superior results.

As long as you update drivers for the video card, CPU and the motherboard. And update the software, as most "GPU-assisted decoding" is made possible by very powerful software.

And now for a list of software...

Freeware:
LAV Filters (will decode video using DVXA/Quick Intel/etc)
FFDShow (same as LAV Filter, but more universal; user preference)

and that's all :)
Honestly, the dev's behind these free programs put in a lot of work and take a lot of consideration and flak for their work.
I really want to donate to them because they really advance audio/video technology by milestones.
Were it not for them, the simplest BD to DVD conversion would be no so miraculous.

Paid software:
CoreCodec (h264/mpeg4/mvc(MVC=3D)), roughly about $14~. One time fee. Infinite updates.
-Capable of utilizing DVXA and CUDA.
-No real Intel support. Shame really. But LAV Filters support DVXA/Cuda/Intel all around.

I bought a license for that.
However, the hardware codes to activate the software...
Tend to change. The reason behind the hardware change is still, as of yet, unknown. :itsamystery:

I largely suspect it has to do with the engineer's coding. Which is smart. In a long-termed fashion.
If he kept his codes secure, they would have to email him with a new machine code to get a new activation key.

In essence, you can keep better track of your software, whether it's being leaked or hacked, per se.

With your codecs and splitters, you can reduce the payload on your laptop, even your desktop, and prolong the life of your machines.

The only real limitations is that of your hardware.

Generally, video cards after 2007 have "GPU-assisted decoding".

My laptop is from 2007. No real decoding capability, so most of it is dependant on the CPU.
Even DVXA is a stretch :-/

The newest machines, even store-bought from the shelf should have "GPU-assisted decoding", which will really come in handy.

Since, the Graphics card is doing most of the work and not the CPU, the GPU will translate smoother and quicker to the CPU to your codec/splitter in a manner that's near ultra-Superman speed in comparison.

Trust me.

Converting a full-sized Blu-Ray movie like The Prestige will be about 3x faster on a machine that has GPU-assisted decoding than a machine that relies on the CPU decoding it, even if there is compatible software to decode (LAV filters, FFDShow, CoreCodec, etc).

What I mentioned earlier today, Lord of the Rings, extended edition of FOTR: Disc 1 taking about 16~ hours...

Would probably be about 10 hours on a faster machine with GPU-assisted decoding.

I found an Amazon page that offered an AC adapter for nearly $7.
The reviews are very mixed.

Half the people kept their battery plugged in... :notgood:
The others reported a fire hazard, but failed to provide details (I'm thinking, it's largely their fault and inexperience, so their reviews should be deleted A.S.A.P).

I think it's kind of sad the only reviews to go on are from inexperienced hacks.

Far too often, there's reviews where people SHOUT their mistakes and fail to deliver their work environment or anything relevant to diagnose the problem properly.

It's always like a Witch Hunter for the typical novice. :sad:

This is often the reason why I feel technology is ahead of itself.

If you can't influence the majority of the audience into understanding the technology, then you have no place in this world.
Very much like Prometheus. They delved into this archaeological expedition in hopes of finding positive feedback when all they found was the start to a hellish reality unleashed upon the entire universe.

According to that Special issue magazine I bought today, and Riddley's interview in it, the only link between blade runner and prometheus is the fact that Fassbender's character, David-8, share some of the same philosophical reflexion as Roy Batty. Other than that, nothing.

What's interesting is that it seems Theron's character is muuuuuuuch more important than people seem to think. according to her interview, she has both a hidden agenda AND is not who she seems to be.

Sparky probably knows more about it, but I know when I was recording my Toonami tapes last year the dvd recorder wouldn't accept the discs I already had which were dvd-rw. I looked in the manual and it would only accept dvd+rw. It wasn't too easy to find that kind but I ended up getting them at Radio Shack. I'm not sure why, but I think it's a formatting difference..... I know when I put a blank dvd+rw into the computer disc drive, it will not read it. I dunno :itsamystery: Light the Sparky signal~

I've never had a problem with burning formats other than just some discs failing occasionally.
As far as I know the only thing you have to do is make sure to encode it for players. Which just means it will put it into Mpeg-2 format as that is the standard for all dvd players.

Essentially, what everyone else said. The first Alien movie. Just to give an idea of horrible space can be. You know, where no one can hear you scream~

There's a lot of shared elements with the Alien universe, the Space Jockey, the artistic rhythm of the ships, the little egg doo-dads.

It originally started as a prequel to the Alien franchise. But as the writer and director kept working on it, they saw the potential to take this story into a whole different direction. It's always viewed as a "prequel (of sorts)".

Weyland, Space Jockey, LV-223, 37 year difference between Prometheus and Alien, the small creature in that one trailer shot that looks like a chest-burster...

There are a lot of similar elements. All of which was intended for the original idea of making a prequel.

The writer of the movie, Damon Lindelof, wants to really steer it away from the Alien franchise to make it an original movie.
"Original" in the sense that it's not an official prequel.

He also stated that if they are fortunate enough to get to make a sequel to Prometheus, they'd would go even further to separate it from the Alien franchise.

So, no. It's not really a sequel. Not officially. It's been mutated into a new line of work.

Scott has been extremely secretive about what happens in the end of the film to let audiences know it's separate from Alien(s).

I would still recommend watching Alien. And if you have fun with that, watch the other Alien movies.

1. Alien. Anything after that is optional. Aliens is really fun.

2. DVD-R/RW vs DVD+R/RW...

Older machines, and usually cheaper machines can't really read "+" media so well.

+ media is better suited for archiving music files, documents, pictures and anything else that's essentially in parts and pieces.
+ media is designed to read data off the disc in random order. Album A, track 5; Album B, track 1; Album X, tracks 1-5; Album A, track 4; etc.

- media is better suited for movies.
- media is designed to read data off the disc in a linear fashion, from start of the disc to the end.

Data starts at the center of the disc and spirals outward to the edge of the disc. @

You can put movies on + media, but it's sort of a waste if you have archiving to do.

There's still a lot of debate about the truth of + or -.

It was initially created to avoid taxes and levies on the official DVD branding in the market.
DVD+ was made so people didn't have to pay so much just have a DVD logo on the disc.

However, + media is not entirely compatible with most machines. It's not guaranteed.
You can burn a properly formatted movie that lives up to DVD standards (MPEG2) and burn it to a + disc, but there's only a 70-90% chance it will play in your machine.

It's largely due to the fact that + doesn't really have a set standard, since it stands apart from the - empire of DVD's.

So that means, any company can make their discs anyway they want.
Nowadays, that stands for all blank media :laugh: From outsourcing to cheaply made mass productions.

Your DVD player has a role to play as well. If it was made by a company that took these two formats into consideration.

In summary:
Use the minus media for your movies and plus media for your computer backups.

DVD sizes are another thing. DVD5 vs DVD9.
There's others like DVD10, DVD15, etc, but never really used, hard to find, and mostly for very exclusive productions.

DVD5's are the 4.4gb~ discs. DVD9's are 7.46gb~ discs (also called Dual-Layer discs).

DVD9's can be tricky. Since it works with two layers of the disc, you have to help your program pick the most suitable point on the disc where it stops writing on the first layer and begins writing the data on the second layer.
And there's also the option of making the transition of the layers "seamless" or not.
Seamless is a more compatible option for newer DVD players.
Seamless will buffer the break point of the two layers to allow you to watch the movie without a slight pause, keeping the playback experience...seamless.

Also, on the matter of blank media (DVD, CD, BD, alike)...

Since data is written on the disc in a spiral fashion, from center outward, it is also advisable when cleaning any disc to start from the very center and make a straight line to the edge.
Never in a circular motion!
Straight wipes is to help reduce and loss of data, should you use a fabric that could cause too much friction and inadvertently scratch the disc.
Recovery would easier to achieve, since the data you scratched is in small segments, as apposed to circular wipes would otherwise destroy a whole section of the file rather than a few bytes in random order.
Recovery software would be able to calculate and guess the missing data more easily if it's only in small proportions.

If you were to draw a spiral on a chalk board, what would be easier to touch up if a mistake were to happen: a single line going through or having to draw larger portions of the circles again?

I get FFDshow to decode most audio.

VC-1/WMV gets decoded by WMV9.
FLV/OGM/etc are decoded by LAV filters.

All comes with KLCP_Mega.

Windows primarily does AVI and WMV because Windows has its own decoders/splitters for AVI/WMV files.
For other file formats, you need a different splitter, like LAV filters.

I don't normally bother with thumbnails.
Sometimes when you download a movie, the codec settings are screwey and will cause the explorer window to crash.
Usually this symptom is a sign of corrupt registries concerning installed or uninstalled codecs/splitters.

Codec Tweak Tool (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Codec-Tweak-Tool) can scan for broken or missing codec/splitter registries and eliminate the problem.
You can also manage all installed codecs/splitters with CTT.

I only ever use details in Q-Dir because on list mode, it thinks I'm trying to merge files :rolleyes: details allows me to transfer files on the empty space near a folder and not merge anything.

I also remove those scene release characters [Oj] or anything else junky (AAC-h264) etc.

And I change my number system...

Back from my gaming binge.


Max Payne 3- Erased the bad memories of Max Payne 2 I have had since 03. Hard mode with free aim on consoles is a son of a bitch. Once it comes out on PC that should be a little less frustrating.
Red Dead Redemption- After playing Max Payne 3, there is so many things from that game that they can implement into a sequel. Set it in the 1880s, reintroduce dual wielding, set it further out west.
Metro 2033- An under appreciated gem of a shooter/horror game. Its a great thing that it gets a sequel despite THQs internal problems and that the dev team can survive without that failing publisher.
Total War: Shogun 2 - So much better and so much more optimized compared to Empire. Larger and even more detailed battles. Haven't got into campaign that much yet, gonna install Darthmod first.
World of Tanks- My crippling addiction to this game hasn't ended yet, even with all these new games. Hopefully the new Mechwarrior game is good enough to satisfy my armored carnage needs.
Kingdom Hearts- First time I have played the game since '05. A definite guilty pleasure.
