I'm on the fence about the new Clash of the Titans until I see it.
When I was wee the original really made an impact on me, I love it.
Also the old Sinbad movies too.
I have a feeling this new one with new special effects will lack the charm and heart of the original. Fight scenes, battles and monsters do not equate a good movie per se.
But the script writer is good so, we'll see.
I too have enjoyed Harryhausen movies as a lad and Liam Neeson is playing Zeus in the new one so he'll be good in it at least.
Raimi said in an interview that he wants to strip the spidey franchaise back to it's fundamentals, no more too many super villians spoil the broth crap like the 3rd one. It was funny in places but it had too many bad guys and not enough progression for either of them, plus sandman was embarrasing.
You seem to know your Marvel characters, more than I do.
I've never heard of Man-Thing.
I'd like to see more Vertigo characters get their chance.
Hopefully the Death: High Cost movie will be the catalyst for that. A Lucifer movie may be good if they gave it to the right person to direct. Aronofsky would be an interesting choice, because I'm sure Del Toro would be busy.
The problem with Spidy 3 isn't the fact that there were 3 villians in it but far to many main story lines with either no resolution, (dying daughter) or stupid random resolution (Butler Ex Machina) Peter & MJ weren't as likable as in the other 2, and the needless killing of bad guys.

Most Christians don't know that the date of the Christ child's birth was arbitrarily picked by the church to supplant the ritual dates surrounding winter solstice widely practiced at the time throughout Europe by what we now term "Pagans." Some people say it's more likely he was actually born in spring near Easter actually. Most "Holidays" such as St. valentines day and Halloween are on earlier Pagan days of note that predate Christian celebrations.

I know all about the Patriarchal replacing the Matriarchal, and the process of supplanting one belief over another. I've studied it. The Christians weren't the first to do it, but they are the most well known and so get most of the attacks. I don't debate religion very often because it's ultimately fruitless, for me the sky is blue, for someone else it's azure.
And everyone is an idiot. :)

I've found most people don't care in the slightest, BUT it seems the non 3D version of Avatar is in the 2.40:1 screen ratio, and the 3D version has been trimmed down to the more TV friendly 1.85:1, so you're getting it in three dimensions but losing a bit left and right. I find that unacceptable. I hate when they mess with ratios. I know, no one else gives a shit. Personally, I'll have to watch both. It better be good.

I can't think of another religion that outright supplanted an older earlier religion of the area with intent like the church did. Bon an early religion of Tibet existed long before Buddhism came into that area. But I see that example as sort of naturally growing in that area not to mention Tibetan religion retains some aspects of Bon. Dating religion gets sticky though because they all have luminous tomes that point out the creation date and so on that usually has nothing to do with reality. Hindu vedic Sidereal astrology says there are long ages called Yugas and we are entering into a new age, the former being a dark age of Kali. An age where male energies dominate the Shakti-feminine and now a new time where women once again are acknowledged and lead ushering in a more balanced right brain reality tunnel of consciousness. Sounds about right to me and about time.

I would imagine Cameron has allowed for the difference in screening ratios, and he won't have a character outside of the 1.85:1 boundries while talking, he is technically minded after all. However, some of the epic nature of the surrounding vistas may be compromised. It's a trade off, 3D is it's selling point so it's probably not a big deal. For something like an Akira Kurosawa movie though, it can be disastrous.
Heated debate, eh?

By the way, I caught Avatar 3D at midnight Thursday and I must advise any and all of you to watch it on the IMAX screens or really, really close up front on the regular screens. The cropped up aspect ratio in 3D makes it such that it doesn't capture your entire field of vision unless you're dead front and center. (It's the only way to completely envelop yourself inside the Na'vi world, which is a place worth visiting.) Anyhow, it was an enjoyable flick that I would pay to see again."

niters, Doc.......see ya in your morning. :D
I missed the morning completely. It passed me by without even a howdy-doody.
I watched that Mashed in Plastic thing (I took the AVI as well as the mp3) and it's good in places. Bad in others. About 60/40 to Bad/Good.
Blue Frank mixed with AC/DC's She's got the Jack was really good. The 2 Bowie tunes were good. Tori Amos mixed with, something, I forget, and the Nine Inch Nails one were all great. It's worth a watch for any Lynch fan. Lynch's editing is always ten out of ten but this is pretty faithful to his style.
BEWARE: If you haven't saw the movies there are some HUGE spoilers, particularily in Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet, Mullholland Drive, and Eraserhead. (I'd forgotten how deeply disturbing I find Eraserhead. It's been years since I saw it.) The only film I hadn't saw was the one where the guy goes cross country on a mini tractor, but thankfully there were no major reveals in it.

Yeah, it was the picture that won me over, too. Make sure and watch right to the very end of the credits (you can skip any songs you don't like prior to that) because Lynch gets the last word and it made me LMAO. He echoes the sentiments of a thousand Lynch fans the world over.

Dr Faustus
12-21-2009, 01:38 AM
Yeah, I did the same. Sound quality of it is fine, picture is as you'd expect. Most of the shit ones are in the first half, but I guess it depends largely on whether you're a fan of the music. I don't mean Angelo but whomever he is "mashed" with. the Eleanor Rigby one is plain awful, and I'm a Beatles fan.
rick_says
12-21-2009, 01:46 AM
When I was still a wee little kid, all I listened to was the beatles. Over and over again I would listen to them. When an album was over, I would play it again...and again. So obviously I used to love them. I just can't listen to them anymore. Maybe years from now I won't be so burnt out on them anymore.
I hope it's not painful, but like you say, I'll just skip the bits I don't like.

You are right on that account Neg, the way they glide smoothly on the slick rails, and the way the old ones have those awesome exposed pistons that you can see pumping as it goes by, and the way the new ones are all smooth and steely and aerodynamic. Then there is the way they operate with starting off very slow and gentle but as they start to pick up steam become faster and harder until they reach the height and are almost like they aren't moving at all. Plus they go through tunnels so....
