I don't understand the appeal of anything about this game.... Was in a gamestop the other day and heard the tv spot for maybe 3 times in 10 minutes.... I swear if I have to hear Tara do idiot valley girl anymore, that chainsaw is going to go somewhere unpleasant :mad: Dammit! Slip into the Timmy Turner voice or something! Sometimes I feel weird about how little of the horror genre I've seen. Same with games.

The Fatal Frame combat can both be irritating and improve the scares, because it pretty much revolves around you being helpless. To do really effective damage you have to let ghost get so close to you they can practically kill you, then start snapping. The first one has really limited film too, with can be frustrating if you were snap happy early on. It's good stuff, though. They have a lot of those subtle, background scares. Those are my favorite.

Eternal Darkness is up there on my horror games list too, though it's nowhere near as fun once you can effectively treat sanity damage. Even though I knew what it was doing that game always made me feel like I was going crazy.

The cage Bad Lt got surprisingly good reviews in a magazine well known over here for severely bashing mad movies. That's pretty much the only mag in which most movies get a straight 0. from most if not all reviewers. If I remember correctly, Bad Lieutenant got an average rating of 3 or 4, which equals to "rather good/enjoyable". As a comparison, ghost rider 2 got 0 from 5 reviewers, and Conan 3D...they nearly went in the negatives for that one.

I'm not sure. Mad movies staff are not really big fans of herzog. They seem to have enjoyed Cage's performance, for one, and they enjoyed the general atmosphere of the movie. I'd have to find back the article and translate it...

that's the good thing about this mag. they always try to find something nice about a movie. but sometimes, they just can't. as with bayformers, or Conan 3D. I don't think they had anything nice to say about these films.

I've only had one try because I had slogged through to get to most recent bad guy. The hardest fights I had so far are still that first bastard and Odin, probably because I was still unsure of what Paradigms were by name.

I got Alexander in just over 2 minutes. Target time was 24. I felt like a GOD!

Still think most of the flack for XIII comes from people who are so used to wrpgs, now. And, who don't like cutscenes. Whatever ~_~

Yeah, same two people and then a pack of monsters for the third slot. They all have one role each. So, you just swap out a stronger COM monster when you find one. Paradigms never have to change. Especially in the main quest. Can do Cerberus most of the game, and then you need SYNs and SABs for the final battles.

Well, I admittedly only played to Ch. 11, but even then I also thought they should have added deck saves. Too many times I had to reconfigure the paradigms because the game reset the deck arbitrarily or party changes set the deck to something I didn't want. One of my biggest complaints was why they needed paradigms at all...it begs the logical question of why only some party configurations were possible but not others, and why the arbitrary number of six was the max allowance. I've already voiced my opinions on XIII though, and I'm not looking for an argument.

A friend of mine was besotted with Lara so he lent me the games. I have been known to play shit if I have nothing else at the time.

The remake (Legend?) was okay. I got stuck trying to execute a jump off a platform onto a wall and then from the wall sideways over a gate. The controls just hurt my brain. I desk flipped after 20 tries.

I've also played all the recent PS3 ones. They had some bad vehicle moments but the jumping and swimming was a little better.

That is true. Most stereo devices don't really care to downmix properly.

5.1 bitrate goes for 384/448. Divide either of those by 6. that's what you get per channel.
or 384/448 divided 2 per channel.
Not counting any downmixing of the surround channels (C, SL, SR, LFE) that get cropped to around 75% of their original values.

And since LFE doesn't really compute in a stereo environment.... you just lose a portion entirely.


448/6=74.666666666666666666666666666667
74.6~*3=224 per channel.
now modify for the downmix...
74.6~+((74.6~*0.75)*2)+0
left channel+((single channel*0.75)*2 for one surround channel and the center channel)+0 for the LFE which is useless at this point.

=186.66666666666666666666666666667

bitrates of 384 are much lower numbers.

192/2=96


But don't forget, when it's mastered in stereo, all the sound is already configured and the levels are perfect.
When you donwmix a surround sound source, there's other things you can do to it but it will still come out a little quieter, as the surrounding channels are designed to come out a little quieter and receiver/amplifier settings must be tweaked according to distance from the audience.
(Dynamic Range Control~)

In stereo, there is no distance to compute so all the sound doesn't need mofication or tweaking.
(DRC is not really needed at all)



Also, the lower bitrates tend to be better for older movies as they were recorded with old technology and tend to give off higher frequency ranges, which is best for lower bitrates.



Higher bitrates are better for newer movies where sound is a key element for the movie.



If you have a DTS compatible receiver/amplifier, try watching a movie that has regular AC3 audio (384/448) and offers DTS audio.
Watch with regular AC3 audio and then switch to DTS after awhile. During an action scene, you'll really hear the difference in quality and volume.

DVD's with AC3/DTS: Quantum of Solace, Reign of Fire and many more.

Still think most of the flack for XIII comes from people who are so used to wrpgs, now. And, who don't like cutscenes. Whatever ~_~

Yeah, same two people and then a pack of monsters for the third slot. They all have one role each. So, you just swap out a stronger COM monster when you find one. Paradigms never have to change. Especially in the main quest. Can do Cerberus most of the game, and then you need SYNs and SABs for the final battles.

The cutscene hate bums me out. I get it if they're long and constant, I guess (even if I don't really mind), but a well-placed cutscene can be really powerful. I love that era of gaming.

What really drives me insane is when reviewers will tear into a JPRG for being cliche and then give glowing reviews to the Dragon Age games.

A friend of mine was besotted with Lara so he lent me the games. I have been known to play shit if I have nothing else at the time.

The remake (Legend?) was okay. I got stuck trying to execute a jump off a platform onto a wall and then from the wall sideways over a gate. The controls just hurt my brain. I desk flipped after 20 tries.

I've also played all the recent PS3 ones. They had some bad vehicle moments but the jumping and swimming was a little better.

Were the Tomb Raider games ever very good? Seems like clunky controls were always a problem, and people liked it because Lara was hot.

I'll play a demo or smth of the new one, though.

GI gave Mass Effect 3 a 10. This sort of thing makes me wonder if I used to have horrible taste, or they have just gone in the shitter in terms of integrity. I still don't know how they gave Skyward Sword a 10, after giving TP a 10, which it probably doesn't deserve, either. I mean, I like it A LOT, and it may be lightyears better than SS in terms of story and set-pieces, but it's not perfect. Someone asked them how they always gave games that never change (Nintendo games and Modern Warfare) 10s and then shit all over Silent Hill and Resident Evil (I haven't personally noticed them shit on RE, to be fair. It's hard for me to tell if game magazines have gotten worse too. I agreed with their reviews a lot more frequently, but maybe that's just because the kinds of games I like were in favor back then. Right now there's really no game reviewer I trust. Amazon reviews are more reliable than something else.

Not changing is fine if they're predisposed to like you, the worst thing ever if they're not. Cliches are horrible if they don't care for your genre, completely ignored if they do.

Graces f got a lot of middle of the pack reviews that admitted it had a really good, innovative battle system, but spent most of the review complaining that the story/characters were cliche.

what beats me is why every goddamn game remake ends up being a FPS. Shadowrun got remade as an FPS, same for Syndicate...I guess FPS is the lowest common denominator. I don't mind them, but Shadowrun...Syndicate...there was much better to do than brutish FPS.

I could see a marvellous RPG with Shadowrun. I could see it working with the same mechanics as fallout or BG or Neverwinter Nights...

but I guess it's easier to sell FPS. Well in Shadowrun case it wasn't.

The whole strategy behind modern shooters is supposed to be "30 seconds of fun, repeated ad nauseum". And if there are people who are willing to pay for that, fine, whatever. It can fund some more interesting games. But it enrages me that it's held up as the best of what gaming has to offer while legitimately great games get picked to pieces.

Valkyria Chronicles is a current gen shooting game done well, to me. I was completely immersed in the story and the graphics, cared so much about my unit, and reset the game 1000 times to keep my characters from perma-dying. I'm not going to lose my wonderful creepy masochist engineer, not ever, even if I have to play a level 100 times! Plus, there was so much focus on strategy. But I guess that's why it's considered to be an SRPG and not a shooter.

If gaming magazines are going to keep letting people who hate certain types of games review them, they should let people who hate shooters review them. It would be a fun read, I'm sure.

They scrapped that, but it still looks like they took most of the fun out of the new SSX. The whole reason the SSX games were great is that they were more like snowboarding on some insane gameshow than a sports game. Now it's just a generic snowboarding game, and it will probably sell great just to spite me. :laugh:

I remember their review for Shattered Memories. The last sentence was like I'm sure there's plenty here for Silent Hill fans.

That's what really bugs me, I think. I see so many reviews with an opener saying that the person isn't really a fan of this series/genre. It's bad enough that it happens with gaming magazines, which at least have the limited staff excuse, but I see it on websites like IGN all the time, even though they frequently bring in freelancers.

If you're going to have someone who's not a Silent Hill fan review a Silent Hill game, then at least include one of those mini "second look" reviews from someone who has love for the series. New games cost a decent chunk of change, and it sucks that you can't really trust reviews anymore.

I never could get the stupid fuckers running on a Windows 98 Virtual machine. Then again, all I had was Shitty Virtualbox to work with. And everyone seems to use BIN/CUE combos, which OS X can't handle natively or with free software.

So I content myself with Tomb Raider I.

That makes perfect sense. :) I love games that get me excited about exploring their world. And, I love plenty of games that don't necessarily have great controls. There's just enough I enjoy about them to get me past that.

The people I knew who were really into it were teenage guys who liked to talk about Lara's butt a lot. So, that's probably colored my opinion of the franchise. :laugh:

So back to the issue of adobe flash crashing my firefox, I've been trying the double window to watch my cartoon stream and it's still happening =/ I had the idea of trying another browser just for the stream, but when I search "browser name" + adobe flash + crash, it seems the problem is happening for a ton of people on different browsers. Chrome, Opera, and Firefox seem to have the same problems..........

Flash crashes for me all the time, but it doesn't take the whole browser with it. Just the little box where it should be has a little robot head telling me it crashed. Refresh the page and it's fixed.
My guess is your stubborn refusal to upgrade from 3 or 4 ( I forget which) may be a culprit as well.

It is very customizable, but I doubt you will get it exactly the same.
Toolbars and buttons probably won't be a problem, but I don't use skins so I don't know how that will fare.

To the average gamer, most of the stuff coming out of Japan is uninteresting. JRPGs are passe, Visual Novels that are popular in Japan would never work in the West (plus the fact that import copy costs are fucking outrageous), and a lot of the games just feel outdated to some. (Again not my opinion, so don't bitch to me about it).

It makes everything below that just varying degrees of bad and really how many do you need?

Player One. Mega-Force. Joypad. All those never hesitated to call a game shitty when it was shitty. Even when it was good, they still took the time to point the flaws, as small as they were.

Jesus, that takes me back. I remember the first one I bought had SotN on the cover. It became harder to get so I switched to Gamepro and EGM. I liked EGM better, but the issues always left ink on my fingers and the issues in general seemed to degrade faster. Could have used an extra layer of gloss.
I stopped buying Gamepro when the price went from 3 to 6 bucks even though the size shrunk by half. Some of those 90's issues were as thick as strategy guides while later ones barely worked as paper fans since they were so wispy.

I had some of those thick ass issues. Bought them at airports, for some reason. No way that shit would fly now :sad:

Also, I remember PSM. I started getting them when they scrutinized every scrap of detail Square released about FFVIII's development, and then kind of got hooked on the cynical editorial style and fanart they used to publish. Then they kind of went downhill, devoting a lot of their editorial space to that stupid mascot they had. I think the last issue I bought was a FFXII issue or something. The Ryan Kinnard covers were cool though.

Incidentally, speaking of fanart, I remember there was one particular fan artist who used to send in a ton of FF fanart to them (Adam Weng I think his name was), to the point that when they discovered he'd been tragically killed in a car accident they devoted a whole page to his valediction. His art was very good, so that probably made it more depressing too.

I cannot fathom why they make such bullshit extra toys like that. They've proven that they can do a passable job of making cheaper versions of the toys (Samurai, mostly, but RPM is PASSABLE, I guess, if I take my fanboy goggles off). If they hadn't made all that extra shit for RPM, they could have made Engine souls to go in the cheaper molds.

I will never understand WHY they silence the engines. Kids love Pokemon, the show would have gone over like gangbusters. Plus, you can still see them flapping their gums in all the footage. But, no, it's post-apocalyptic for some asinine reason :rolleyes:

Apparently someone at some game conference decided to tell Japanese game producers that their games suck, outright. And then the guy who made Braid gave them shit, too.

From what I can see, they aren't doing anything different than they always have. Get over yourselves Western producers and show some fucking respect. You act that way, and fans are going to feel like they have a right to act that way.

Similar sequels is not a Japanese problem. There are companies that do it, absolutely, but it plagues the entire gaming industry. A great deal of western games (that sadly sell a buttload) are essentially clones of their predecessors. Sports games are an obvious example (really, with how few changes they make, they could just sell a $15 roster update once a year), and FPS titles are pretty bad about this too.


To the average gamer, most of the stuff coming out of Japan is uninteresting. JRPGs are passe, Visual Novels that are popular in Japan would never work in the West (plus the fact that import copy costs are fucking outrageous), and a lot of the games just feel outdated to some. (Again not my opinion, so don't bitch to me about it).

I think part of it is the (western) gaming media pumping out the idea that JRPGs are out of date, and part of it is the fact that anime has become decidedly ~uncool~ in recent years.

If you look at any major JRPG franchise, or even some of the ones that are fairly minor here, they've continually updated and improved their gameplay without getting much credit for it. Even when they do get credit for it, like with the new Tales game, they try and undermine it by admitting that the battle system is fantastic, but focusing on the fact that their story and characters are cliche. It's a really obvious bias, especially when you look at some games that get major praise.

The biggest problem is that a lot of stuff that made JRPGs seem like the coolest of the cool around the time FFVII came out- the wacky hair-dos, the crazy weapons- are now off-putting to gamers who don't want anything resembling anime in their games. I saw someone going off about how FFXIII was pathetic, and he wouldn't play it, because characters had pink hair, and that was "stupid and unrealistic".

Magic is fine. Giant transforming summons are fine. But pink hair? That's too far. :laugh:


Not really struggling to deal with, just not doing a goddamned thing about it.

The lack of innovation in Japanese games is a line frequently pumped out by gaming sites and magazines, but I don't think it's the kind of problem these publications pretend it is, and companies absolutely are striving to do things about it.

I think some companies were late to the game with changes- for example, Nippon Ichi didn't upgrade the Disgaea sprites to HD until Disgaea 4- and I think that harmed their franchises in the west. Disgaea 3 outsold Disgaea 4 in North America even though many more people owned PS3s by the time 4 came out, and even though 4 was probably the best game in the series since the original. Like I said, every big JRPG has changed up their battle system quite a bit, but they didn't do it fast enough, and now have the reputation of refusing to change even though that isn't true.

By the same token, many Japanese companies, Namco especially, have gone out of their way to appeal to western gamers- it's just that the games they created were massive bombs. In fact, I'm pretty sure at least one of the quotes up-thread is out of context and was in reference to the weak games Namco published in the hopes of winning over gamers in the west.

One of the things that I do think is holding Japan back is the reliance on teens as protagonists. As teenagers, nobody minded this, but as people grow older, they often have a preference for playing as adult protagonists.

This is largely due to a difference in culture. In Japan, there are pretty strict expectations of adults in society/in the work force, but when they're at home, it's socially acceptable and even more common to be more childish. You can read up on amae to learn a little more about it.

Adult protagonists won't make a game a success here (just look at Lost Odyssey), but it is an issue. I don't know if I think it's a good thing for Japanese companies to change too much about their games for the sake of an audience that's determined to reject them, though.


I feel sorry for Japan. I mean, I think the world would be a far more boring place without them. But if Nintendo's baton death march is any indication of how the industry segment is doing as a whole (I legitimately have no clue)....

Japan is doing pretty okay. The best selling game in the entire world last week (or last month, I can't remember) was a title released exclusively in Japan. A One Piece game that'll probably never see an international release. Too bad, it's probably good times.

JRPGs actually still do pretty well in Europe too. They get a lot of titles released before North America gets them now, and sometimes get titles we don't at all.

There are niche games that have a built in audience and are cheap enough that they'll probably continue to come out here for quite some time. The Atelier franchise is pretty obscure, but the last 7 games in the series have been released here, with the next one coming out next month. It had a built in fanbase that's enough to continually be a profit.

It's actually bigger games that are in more trouble. They cost much more to localize, and because JRPGs have largely become niche titles, they're not as safe a bet as a cheaper game by a publisher like Gust. Titles like Xenoblade and The Last Story almost didn't get a North American release, which was pretty shocking. The Tales series is probably second only to FF, but Xillia coming out here isn't a safe bet. Valkyria Chronicles did pretty well, considering, but we might never get the third game in the series because the PSP doesn't have a big presence. Maybe it'll be available digitally if the Vita does well here.

What I'm using too many words to say is that Japan will be fine. It's Japanese games getting released in North America that's the issue.

Revan is the one that totally hates and despises the game, I didn't mind it to be honest (I'm pretty sure I've even defended it on one or two occasions). Just, it has a few issues that really annoyed me towards the end (plot that falls apart, on-rails gameplay, stupid Cloud-with-breasts-clone main character, zero-exploration, ridiculous main antagonist, good but ultimately flawed battle system). It does have it's good points though (Fang is awesome, some of the music I can't get out of my head, and... well.. the Eidolons. ;)).

Sure it's not my favourite FF, but it's not my most hated either (FFX has that dubious honour ;)).

I think it's less that they don't bother to try to understand, and more than their attempts to appeal to the western market haven't been entirely successful. I think there's also a legitimate concern that they'll alienate their core audience in the process. Japanese gamers are the ones supporting these companies, so their primary focus has to be on continuing to appeal to them. Western franchises probably aren't going out of their way to appeal to Japanese gamers.

However, when it comes to major worldwide franchises like Final Fantasy, they can and should be doing more to appeal to gamers on an international scale, since they're losing what was once profitable ground. Final Fantasy XIII was absolutely an attempt to appeal to western gamers. It did well internationally sales wise, but didn't go over well with a lot of western fans, with XIII-2 not doing that well (though strangely, I've heard a lot of people who hated XIII praising it). Versus absolutely looks like it could appeal to all sorts of gamers, if it ever comes out, but I'm not certain people will be willing to give a game connected to XIII a chance.

XIV has been a stunning, massive disaster and I really doubt 2.0 can save it. At least not here, where SE's brand is pretty damaged. Frankly, I think they'd be better off putting their efforts into making XV an amazing game, but I'm just a random internet person. ;)

Oh, I think it's mostly marketing too, and not some deep seated hatred for the Japanese people. At one point in time, JRPGs had an incredibly dedicated built-in audience. Anything published by Square and anything to do with FF especially would get massive, massive sales. Preying on any dissatisfaction JRPG gamers might feel and making them WRPG fans is only good business, and the general badmouthing of Japanese games means they're less likely to give other JRPGs a chance.

I think the perceived unwillingness to fight back is a combination of Japan's xenophobia, which you mentioned, and the enormous cultural differences between the east and west. The bigger Japanese companies would be well served hiring some excellent western PR people. Would do a lot more for them than releasing poor quality games based on their perception of the style of western games.

I do think Dragon's Dogma has the potential to be a huge success for Capcom, but Capcom's done better at holding onto the western audience in general.

Fang kicks all forms of ass, even if she's a better SAB post-game, and you need to train her as a RAV. They seem to have known you'd have to and her RAV track is very full, even in-game.

The only frustration is the part where she and Light are heading to Hope's house and you're fighting Behemoths that you can't stagger because you can't do Dual-casting. Beyond that, she's a fucking wrecking crew unto herself and virtually nothing can withstand going up in the air with her and Snow simultaneously.

Inafune was one of the first to call them out on it. Maybe when he left, it made an impact.

Indeed. Fang is a one-woman-army - I normally keep her as a COM or RAV while stupid muscle-for-brains Snow gets beaten up - I really only use Fang for SEN during boss fights when another tank is necessary.

Juggling mobs in the air while staggered does ring-true with her Dragoon-like demeanor though (wields a polearm and has a mechanical dragon for an Eidolon - yes, I know Bahamut looks like Diabolos in XIII but the fact is, Bahamut is a dragon regardless. :P)

As for FFXIV, didn't Yoichi Wada basically come out and state with hat-in-hand that the FFXIV disaster really had hurt the reputation of the entire series? I'm pretty sure I have a link to an article on the subject saved somewhere.
