Genre: Survival-Horror, Action | Players: 1 | Developer: Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo

In my self-limited experience with the Survival-Horror genre, there are two monolithic pillars: Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Resident Evil may have come first and hold the hearts of more fans, but Silent Hill speaks to me in a far deeper way. Rather than crawling through austere mansions and sterile research labs, SH forces one to explore far more mundane environments, coated in a grime that perfectly symbolizes the depths of what you are truly plumbing: the human psyche and soul.

You don�t play Silent Hill for scares-per-minute and non-stop action. The best moments come from the near-constant tension of creeping through an abandoned town and any structure therein relevant to the main plot of the early games, or the past of ALL of the gloriously fractured protagonists. The original game, while focusing a bit too much on outdoor environments, does its best to introduce the small handful of locations that became iconic for the series as a whole.

Far more than in any of the other games, these locales act as home to a large treasure trove of easter eggs paying homage to horror movies, novels, pop-culture, and, strangely, Kindergarten Cop. Unfortunately, environmental and logic puzzles aren�t the only thing impeding your urban exploration. A relatively fixed camera works together with tank controls to conjure horrible memories of that other vaunted series� early games. Thankfully, the difficulty isn�t horribly high even on Hard. This is good, because you�re going to need all the help you can get to achieve a 10 star rating, which encompasses--among other things--killing ememies in various ways, avoiding damage, making good time, and achieving all the permutations of the endings.

I personally recommend not tackling that ludicrous challenge. Silent Hill games are best experienced through systematic lingering, to appreciate the creepily rendered environments and superb music and sound effects. Even the b-movie acting and plot can�t dampen the atmosphere manifested in this mostly complete package.

If this review seems far vaguer than the others on this site, your mind isn�t playing tricks on you. It�s intentional. I personally invite you to kick back in a dimly lit room and walk in Harry�s footsteps as he searches for his daughter Cheryl. You might be surprised to find where the journey will take you, and how far down this rabbit hole goes. Happy exploring.

All in all I agree with that assessment. Maybe a little lower on my end (a 3 and a half or so). Homecoming takes more shit than it deserves.

I have to consciously make myself do the opposite of that when I'm trying to be funny and whimsical in my reviews, particularly the book ones. When I do fall back on the clinical review style I find it much easier to get a safe zone. I don't have the extensive vocabulary that you do so I repeat myself a lot. If I can get that passion into one that you got there, I'll be happy.

People used to joke about the N64 being a doorstop, but it had a pretty good library. It was just no SNES (and no PSX), and was really lacking in the RPG department.

Aside from all the multi-player goodtimes (Goldeneye, Smash Bros) and the obvious (Zelda), there was Ogre Battle 64, Jet Force Gemini, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Paper Mario, Perfect Dark, Hybrid Heaven...also Harvest Moon, but really, the PSX version was better. There are quite a few 64 games I still emulate every now and then.

There are very few FPS I enjoy. It's not just that they tend to be dull (though they do), there's just something about the gameplay that really bugs me. There are some really great FPS games that don't bug me at all, but they're few and far between.

Online multiplayer is so cookie-cutter for the most part. Doesn't matter if you're a transformer or a soldier. I killed you, yay... You killed me, boo.... Are we done here? Because there's no joy in this.

Co-op appeals to me, though. Doing the hunts in FFXIII a few days ago made me think how cool it would be to have a similar kind of game like that with you guys as team mates.

I've played LBP and Modnation Racers online a bit too.

LBP is so good when you get 4 peeps working together.

Mark has texted me on several occasions about how awesome it would be to play XIII multiplayer, yes :awsm:

I love RE5 and you all know this, because I say it constantly. I know it goes against the legacy of the series (pre-4) almost entirely, but the gameplay is just sexy smooth and having someone else working with you is so much better than the AI is (once you're actually good at the game, at any rate).

I really wish I had a headset for all the times I played with Allen and Ari. Only way it could have been better. It's even tolerable (enough) to grind in that game.

I spent months helping everyone and anyone get those. A friend and I got 100% early on so we got to know where everything was. LBP lets you show appreciation in some very subtle ways with the controller movements. Love it.

It's just lame anxiety, really. The only person who has yelled at me for not doing game stuff right was in real life, but for whatever reason I get weird about internet stuff instead. :laugh: Whenever I have played with people I know they've been super nice and we've had a good time. I'm just dumb.

The wind blew it back up on the ledge, burning a small worm-like path in the snow. The breeze was strong enough to carry their scent a good distance. But right now, it didn't matter. Right now the only thing that mattered were the hostages inside. The only thing that mattered were the guns that each had brought with them for the mission. Not for convenience, nor appropriateness. But for fun. The only thing that mattered was making this last all day.
The only thing that mattered was that the other guy 80 yards away, smoking the same brand of tobacco, had only a one more puff to go before it would be extinguished by his own brain and blood splatter from Aden's rifle.

...Only he didn't know he had one more puff to go.

"I guess that's why it's called a drag," Spark murmured to himself, unknowingly speaking aloud again.

"What was that, Spark?" Aden puzzled over the whisper.

"Nothing," Spark avoided. "Take the shot, let's get this game started."

And with that, in one simultaneous and synchronized choreographic motion, Aden took the shot while Spark whipped out a cardboard box. By the time Sparktank had fully deployed his box, Aden was exchanging his rifle for his box. If there were 10 pairs of them, it'd look like some sort of stage play.

Just as the two boxes had finally settled, a truck painted green with a blue skull on it drove up and picked up the boxes and loaded them in the back.

The truck started driving again, to the compound. To center of attention. Where all the game roams freely.

In the back, where no one can see the boxes, two fists extended outward for a fist bump.

"Party time," Spark murmured. "Out loud, again," he chuckled.

I have a lot of affection for the N64, but I hurt myself using its controller constantly. This is at least partially because I used to play Mario Party with my friends every day after school. I blistered my hand and subsequently broke the blister with those stupid spinning minigames. :laugh:
They refused to play with me after awhile because I always won. I think the worst blister culprit was Mario Party 3 that had the river rapids mini game. Blood was shed.


They were my drug buddies. We had the same hobbies and addictions so we spent entire weekends together. People didn't even go home.
Friend and i did this minus the drugs. Unless you count fast food and Dynasty Warriors as addictions...


I did a lot of watching people play games too. Still happy to do that.
