I'm having a helluva time writing my next Box. Been chipping away at it for a few days now.

It's a pretty spoilery series so it's only going to get more difficult as the seasons progress.

I think I'm the only one in this world that likes this film as much as I do.
It held my attention. I missed something and the old guy killing himself took me by surprise, but all in all very interesting. Dog was cool too. I didn't understand the old lady's aversion to riding in the car either.

It was actually kind of hard to write since there is almost no overarching story so any detail I went into could possibly be a spoiler. And you know you're old when young people just annoy you.

New girl Legos. Instead of using the regular lego people these have more body detail and are a smidge larger. Because they're not the regular figures they have realistic coloring and as usual the idea of diversity is 3 different white girls 1 possibly asian and a darker colored one. However it looks like there will be more characters besides the core 5 including a few different hair and skin types. It looks like they have holes in their heads for parts to go in. Note that with this new design they can't "sit down" on legos properly and have to stand. Also while they are bigger they actually have less articulation them the tiny guys whose legs can move independently as well as having turning hands. While it is pink and girly the workshop set is kinda cool plus they stole that one person's Wall-E custom.

They've put out a few music cahracters in those blind bags and having a stage would have been nice plus I really would have liked having a "Lego black Girl Hair" piece.

I'm nutting the cgi Clone Wars movie but am unsure of where to put it. It's basically the 1st 3 episodes edited together but it was released theatrically, sold as a movie, & is not on the season DVDs.

5 out of 5 I would only give to the first season when the format was still fresh and they didn't keep shoving new ways to disrupt the narrative. Drama of a plane crash on an island is compelling enough. Don't need all the fucking flashes. Just tell me the goddamn story.

I'll give a pass to flashbacks to give more background, but the forward and sideways were crap. And even for the flashbacks they relied on them way too much.
It was ridiculous how they would have so many to explain the significance of some action instead of just having some dialogue instead.
Throw in craploads of loose ends and lies(move the island and you can't come back, oh wait that's bullshit) and that equals bad or desperate storytelling like the writers were so eager to add to the mystery that they wrote themselves into a hole.

Never been so frightened by a movie. Except maybe the first alien, or, strangely enough, the largely forgotten "Leviathan".

I agree that Legos are an everyone toy, but I can see the reasons behind this. I played with a LOT of Lego stuff as a kid- my dad was an architect and he actually built me Lego landscapes- but not having enough girl Legos was limiting in terms of imaginative play. I had a lot of knights/Robin Hood stuff and I think the only female lego person I have for a while was Maid Marian.

I suspect that not a lot of girls are playing with Legos according to their data, and they're doing what they can do attract that audience. Plus, some parents are really hung up on gender roles and might only get their daughters toys that look "girly". I think playing with Legos is pretty great so I am all for more kids getting them.

I actually think the show was at its very best from the latter half of season three through the end of season 5. I'm probably biased because this is when a lot of lot of my favorite characters (Desmond, Daniel :love:) started to show up, but it was also a time when we were getting answers at a pretty steady rate while still constantly being exposed to new mysteries.

I LOVED the flash forwards. I can still remember the way it felt to watch all this and realize that they actually had made it off the island, and the possibilities that started flooding through my brain.

The flash sideways is more effective when you know exactly what the sideways is and you can think about why characters see what they see. Some of them, like Ben's, are pretty obvious right from the start, but others, I think are pretty interesting to analyze.

Ultimately though, I do think Lost's legacy was somewhat marred by season 6. For me, it's not as simple as "stuff didn't get answered, it's bad", it's that there were huge chunks of storyline that felt pointless, as though they were building to something they never got the chance to build to or were just wasting time to the finish line. Sayid's on Island storyline especially.

I also think that some of the questions they answered were answered so badly that it would've been better to just leave things mysterious- like the incredibly awkward Hurley dialogue about the voices, or "Across the Sea", which I'd probably rank in my bottom 5 episodes of all time. When they got it right- "Ab Aeterno"- it was fantastic, and if they didn't have good answers or didn't have the time to do stuff right, I wish they'd just left it alone. I like plenty of things that have mysteries that are never explained, but I think these things work because they don't seem to be actively building to a reveal and just fizzle out, or contain needless explanatory dialogue.

I know that the writers were certainly hampered by things out of their hands- Libby was supposed to have an actual storyline, Claire's disappearance was neccesitated by film roles, Walt aged out of his part- and I imagine that Lost would've looked pretty different if they'd actually gotten to tell the story they'd wanted to tell, from beginning to what they felt was its natural end. We probably wouldn't have had to deal with that excruciating storyline in early season 3- though I appreciate that it had a small payoff later on- and season 6 as a whole might have looked markedly different. But I still don't know if I could honestly give the series a 5 out of 5 as a whole, in spite of how much I love it and how much time I spent on it. =/ Would require a lot of thinking.

I should check out more behind the scenes stuff for it, probably.

Oh I already put it in the Box. What does every Nutter think? Should it be in the movies or should it be in the TV? Keep in mind they'll be Star Wars in both so it's not like they're gonna only have one in one category.

I think about this a lot. One of the storypoints I was always curious about (from a writing standpoint) is the character of Mr. Eko. Cuse and Lindelof always stated that he was a character that was supposed to survive till the end (along with Locke). Then he asked to be written out of the show for personal/family reasons, and that was kind of handled clumsily (especially since he never appeared again, not even in the finale). I always wondered what the original plan for him was and how significant a part he was supposed to play. Would've changed the series drastically, methinks.

And then he ended up doing G.I. Joe :facepalm:

It's an easy 5 out of 5 for me, though. Anything that involves this much thinking and speculating and imagination deserves all the praise in the world in my book. Easily my favorite television drama ever (essentially a 108-hour movie).

How could I have neglected to mention Mr. Eko?!? He probably would have been among my very favorites, had he stuck around. He got some pretty powerful arcs, considering how brief his time on the show was. This must be one of the most frustrating parts of writing for television, though I do think brilliance sometimes comes out of these last minute workarounds.

Someday, I'd love to see a Lost comic book based around some of their original storylines for the series. No budgetary concerns, no actors to worry about, just telling whatever stories on the Island they weren't able to tell. Cuse and Lindelof often seem very evasive when it comes to arcs they never got to properly finish, and in my head I like to fantasize that it's because they'd like to someday do something like this. I also still hope that the Twin Peaks comic will someday see the light of day. I have too much faith in things. XD

I'm not saying the whole thing was shit, I was just saying 5 out of 5 seemed generous. I watched the whole thing from season 1 thru and I agree with Bud that the effort alone would earn some points, but I also think its shortcomings would knock some off as well. Particularly for me, Season 4 on I was just wanting answers instead of enjoying the story. It appealed to the completionist in me, but that is hardly a way to enjoy a show. If I had more willpower, I would have dumped the show around season 5 when they were just adding mystery willy nilly to extend their hit show.

Watching Elf right now :doc: it's so funny when he gets to New York.

We couldn't afford Legos when I was a kid.

I had some legos. Mostly Pirates and Medieval ones. I had a relatively "sheltered" childhood, so lots of toys and not a lot of contact with the outside. I had Legos, Playmobils, Masks, Transformers...I'll admit, the playmobils were largely my parents idea. but my favorite toys were the ones my parents hated the most: GI Joes. Guns, military uniforms, and lots of explosions. I still have them, somewhere...

And I still have the few GI Joe comics published here...

I still have some legos.

I buy Sony earbuds when they're on sale. 20$.
Last a year before buying new ones.

Only problem is that they don't fit snug in your ear, so you miss out on a lot of bass.
but for portable media, i'm not too big on format or headphones.

At long last, A Shoot The Shit Christmas 2 has come to a close.

I want to thank all of you for your submissions and for participating in this little collaborative project. It's been really fun hearing your submissions and trying to reconcile all the different genres. I’m really proud of what we’ve come up with together. You guys help to shape the direction of the story and arc that this album took (it definitely ended up differently than I originally planned, but I think this is much better!). I think it manages to hit all the major points and emotions of Christmas: anger, hate, loneliness, hope, love, acceptance, and a little bit of weird shit thrown in for good measure. :laugh: It's a little bit of happy, a little bit of dark, sick, perverse, humorous and traditional. It's uniquely STS and every one of us. Enjoy.

I also want to give an extra special thanks to Sparky for creating FOUR brand new mixes especially for this set. And of course to cuckoo for putting the finishing flair on the cover and contributing a completely newly-recorded original cover song, which I consider the highlight of this collection.

I had some legos. Mostly Pirates and Medieval ones. I had a relatively "sheltered" childhood, so lots of toys and not a lot of contact with the outside. I had Legos, Playmobils, Masks, Transformers...I'll admit, the playmobils were largely my parents idea. but my favorite toys were the ones my parents hated the most: GI Joes. Guns, military uniforms, and lots of explosions. I still have them, somewhere...

And I still have the few GI Joe comics published here...

Wait I thought you're from France or some such? Why would they sell G.I. Joes over seas? I know Japan has Mircomen and that covers the small non franchise led army war guy toy niche but the way Hasbro makes it out no one outside the US wants anything to do with G.I. Joe.

Laughed hard enough, I could not breath. Just saw a news segment on a guy in Oregon who tried to use his "Jedi powers" against police.

Going by the mugshot, he looks to be late 30-ish. Apparently he was walking around Toys-R-Us and picked up a toy lightsaber. Started going around hitting customers with it. When confronted by officers, he swung at them. Managed to break the taser. Consequently, he was tackled and cuffed.

Just.....

Prequel got 1pt deduction for some inconsistancy with the original.
The discovery of the ship in the prequel doesn't match the video footage and documents in the original.
The Norwegians found the ship nearly at surface levels of the snow.
Then blew it up and sunk it further.
In the prequel, it was already under the snow, pretty deep.
I don't remember if they said that they used demolitions on it or whatnot.
But that new ship differently makes the original footage misleading.



I just saw "The Thing" (the original one) for the first time.

Never been so frightened by a movie. Except maybe the first alien, or, strangely enough, the largely forgotten "Leviathan".

I actually think the show was at its very best from the latter half of season three through the end of season 5. I'm probably biased because this is when a lot of lot of my favorite characters (Desmond, Daniel :love:) started to show up, but it was also a time when we were getting answers at a pretty steady rate while still constantly being exposed to new mysteries.


Midway through Season 3 is when it really picked up steam after the long hiatus of planning.

I think at the beginning of s3 they grew bored and had no idea where they were going and when audiences realized that, the writers knew they had to come up with a proper direction and went on an extended hiatus to work things out and come up with an ending.

The beginning of S3 was a crock of shit that spent too long in a cage but the final half was fantastic. Especially that haunting ending...."we have to go back. We have to go back, Kate."

Love it.

S4 was good from front to back.......and it had "The Constant". An amazing episode that never ceases to get me all teary eyed.

S6 was too long and drawn out though. There was a lot of really neat stuff in it but could have benefited from 2 or 3 episodes less........and no crazy Claire.

The flash forwards, flash sideways and flashbacks are all great. The writers tried something different with and shook things up to keep things fresh. With that I think it worked really well with the storytelling that could have been potentially disasterous had they not carefully planned with what direction they were taking.

Wait I thought you're from France or some such? Why would they sell G.I. Joes over seas? I know Japan has Mircomen and that covers the small non franchise led army war guy toy niche but the way Hasbro makes it out no one outside the US wants anything to do with G.I. Joe.

Yup, i'm from France, and we had GI joes. big time. We had the cartoon, the comic book and the toys. lots and lots of toys. Of course we had them with a little delay and they were discontinued before that happened in the US. But we had them. I still have the little leaflets packed with the vehicles and some of the data cards from the characters. the only changes were some names, and it was not "A real american hero". It was Just GI joe.



but yeah, we had them. to the eternal disapointment of my mother, who hates everything military.

Going by the mugshot, he looks to be late 30-ish. Apparently he was walking around Toys-R-Us and picked up a toy lightsaber. Started going around hitting customers with it. When confronted by officers, he swung at them. Managed to break the taser. Consequently, he was tackled and cuffed.

I read an interview where they talked about feeling completely trapped by not being able to plan for a definite ending and having to drag things out. The cages were supposed to be symbolic of how they were feeling, which certainly comes through when you watch the episodes. They're excruciating, though. I actually did give up on Lost for a while around that time, but thankfully, I came back to the island.

I am not sure what my top 5 tv episodes of all time are, but The Constant is certainly one of them.

I think my ratings are:

0- Completely unwatchable. Nothing to entertain, not even in a so bad it's good sort of way. Pearl Harbor.
1- Utterly terrible, hard to watch, but something good about it- ie, bad acting I can laugh at, pretty scenery.
2- Not good, but watchable. The sort of thing you'd watch once and never again. Unremarkably bad.
3- Good but fundamentally flawed- big plot holes, promising story that goes nowhere, that sort of thing. Most movies I watch are somewhere around here.
4- Great, throughly entertaining, but could be better. The sort of movies that you love, but wish you could change a little. A lot of excellent stuff fits in here.
5- Perfection. The sort of thing I can watch endlessly and be blown away every time.

I think my ratings are:

0- Completely unwatchable. Nothing to entertain, not even in a so bad it's good sort of way. Pearl Harbor.
1- Utterly terrible, hard to watch, but something good about it- ie, bad acting I can laugh at, pretty scenery.
2- Not good, but watchable. The sort of thing you'd watch once and never again. Unremarkably bad.
3- Good but fundamentally flawed- big plot holes, promising story that goes nowhere, that sort of thing. Most movies I watch are somewhere around here.
4- Great, throughly entertaining, but could be better. The sort of movies that you love, but wish you could change a little. A lot of excellent stuff fits in here.
5- Perfection. The sort of thing I can watch endlessly and be blown away every time.

We're all pretty close on those marks, I think.
I maybe give more 2's than most people but that's just me being film jaded and having seen so damn much... plus I'm a cunt.

I think I already hit my X-mas peak too early. There are a bunch more specials and movies I planned on watching, but only a week left. (It's Halloween all over again.)

Oh, and I :love: Love Actually. All except for that storyline about the English guy coming to America and getting all the chicks, because it's rubbish. :notgood:

It's a great movie to watch and then kill yourself afterwards.

My way is kind of unconventional. I go into a movie with expectations of a 3. It can either go down or up from there, or if it's merely satisfactory, it gets the 3.

3 is the average. Any less than 3, and I'd say skip it. Anything 3 and above, and I'd say it's worth your time.

Movies with 4 and 4.5 have the potential to grow into a 5 over time.

Zeroes are specially given out to movies that plain bore me, or just piss me off. No redeeming factor whatsoever.

1s are reserved for movies I hate. 2s have some sort of redeeming factor. 2.5s are usually the hardest to give out, because it's right at the middle; it could go either way, really.

I think we all do that to some degree. Sometimes the nostalgia glasses lie (Ridley's Legend is a real turd, I used to love it!) but mostly the glasses stay solid for a reason: Kids movies back in the day were great then and are still great now.

Legend was always a turd. :laugh:

I remember really wanting to like it, but I didn't. It was boring and not much happened, but the fantasy aspect really appealed to me (as did Tim Curry's character).

I gave it a shot a few years later, really wanting to like it. I didn't.

I saw both versions, the US theatrical and the original. Still didn't make much difference (besides the TD and Goldsmith scores).

Still, in my mind, I want to like it. :-P

It was Tim Curry that made me like it but I tried to watch it earlier this year (or last year?) and couldn't even make it to the "good" bits.
Piece of shit. I had fond memories of it. Emphasis on "had".

Labyrinth still holds up. It's a classic.

If a movie's flat out bad, then the nostalgia glasses get shattered, but if it's still good, I think it's elevated by my initial impressions of it. There are probably movies I'd 5 that I might give a 3 or 4 if I saw them for the first time now. On the other hand, if a movie I remember as great is awful, it'll probably get a 0 or 1 instead of the 2 it deserves. XD

I've been afraid to rewatch Legend for years. Man, did I love that movie.

I made brownie cookies. They are ridiculously soft. Softest cookies I have ever had in my life! There's no cream cheese in them but they taste almost cheesecake-y. Too rich to eat much, though. Happy to take pics/share recipes if anyone's interested.

I tried not to Nut any nostalgic kids movies for fear of an uproar.
