As much as he smothered that cigarette, I could still see some of the embers in the ash glowing with life. Before fading into a gray darkness. I could see the orange glow softly through the ashtray's green, glassy walls.

The ashtray that mother and I had made for him for Father's Day. Covered in childish stick-figure drawings of tanks. My dad's favorite militant vehicle. My dad's favorite part in any war movie. The sound. The sight. The devastation it brings. The funnest part of the documentaries.
I remember his friends called him The Tank whenever they played poker together.

He looks at the remote in his other hand and taps the numbers. Gently. Never changing the channel. Ever taunting.
He looks at me one last time before standing up.


SMASH!

A loud crash and the sound of glass can be heard from behind me. Alarmed and confused, I had no idea what had happened.
I had no idea where that sound came from and what it had meant.
I remember clenching my shoulders and tucking my head in, covering my ears with my shaky hands.

As my head tilted down, trying to keep it tucked against my chest for safety. I remember everything as if it were in slow motion. I remember the sound of glass falling slowly. The sound of crackles and fizzing. I remember seeing flying to the carpet in all directions like fireworks: sparks. They came quickly, even for slow motion. And they came in numbers. Most died quickly. Smothered into the carpet. Except for one spark. The largest of the group.

As much as it has been suffocated by the strands of the carpet, I could still see some of the embers at its core, glowing with life. Before fading into a brown darkness. I could see the orange flow softly through the carpets long-haired strands.

Fortunately, that's all it did. It died too quickly before it can pass on its legacy through fire and smoke.

I looked at my dad, as he looked at the TV. His mouth was closed and his mouth drooled slightly. As if from some fashion of monstrous delight. He didn't even look at me before walking out the room, out the house. I finally turned around and looked at the TV, as he had been staring at so intently and for so long.

The TV was caved in and void of all cartoons. Destroyed by glass. Amid the chaos of broken glass, sparks and a small stream of white smoke, was more glass. Greenish in color. Shattered in thick fragments. A large chunk can be seen in plain site, as to the cause of the damage.

I slowly stood up and looked at the carpet for the rest of the TV. Shards of the screen were everywhere. A few sparks had appeared and quickly disappeared out of existence. And then I saw it.

I saw it, as if it saw me first and had been staring at me the whole time.

A green fragment of thick glass with childish stick-figure drawings of tanks lie prominently on the carpet, staring at me.

I looked back up at the TV and could see the largest part of the ashtray burrowed tightly into the core of the TV, taking away the life of the family television. One spark at a time.

Soon after, the sparks became less frequent. My mom had been shouting at me to not move before she put her shoes on and came to grab me, carry me to the car. Both my parents entered the house again and shouting ensued. Most of it was jargon and didn't make any sense at the time. Most of it was hurtful to me as the ashtray was to the TV.

My mom came back out, crying and packing the car with my blanket and a small suitcase.

I never saw my dad again. Or another ashtray.

Manga only has the End of Eva rights in the US and it's been out of print for years. A quick search now yields 2 used copies for around $28 shipped. I just might jump on that simply for the fact hat it's gone up to around $50 on average with $30 for just the disc no case or nothing.

They still have rights over here, I'm quite pleased, the releases they've been putting out are top quality. The Akira steel book was a fantastic package and the Eva got a special 2 disc blu as well. :D

The ashtray that mother and I had made for him for Father's Day. Covered in childish stick-figure drawings of tanks. My dad's favorite militant vehicle. My dad's favorite part in any war movie. The sound. The sight. The devastation it brings. The funnest part of the documentaries.
I remember his friends called him The Tank whenever they played poker together.

He looks at the remote in his other hand and taps the numbers. Gently. Never changing the channel. Ever taunting.
He looks at me one last time before standing up.


SMASH!

A loud crash and the sound of glass can be heard from behind me. Alarmed and confused, I had no idea what had happened.
I had no idea where that sound came from and what it had meant.
I remember clenching my shoulders and tucking my head in, covering my ears with my shaky hands.

As my head tilted down, trying to keep it tucked against my chest for safety. I remember everything as if it were in slow motion. I remember the sound of glass falling slowly. The sound of crackles and fizzing. I remember seeing flying to the carpet in all directions like fireworks: sparks. They came quickly, even for slow motion. And they came in numbers. Most died quickly. Smothered into the carpet. Except for one spark. The largest of the group.

As much as it has been suffocated by the strands of the carpet, I could still see some of the embers at its core, glowing with life. Before fading into a brown darkness. I could see the orange flow softly through the carpets long-haired strands.

Fortunately, that's all it did. It died too quickly before it can pass on its legacy through fire and smoke.

I looked at my dad, as he looked at the TV. His mouth was closed and his mouth drooled slightly. As if from some fashion of monstrous delight. He didn't even look at me before walking out the room, out the house. I finally turned around and looked at the TV, as he had been staring at so intently and for so long.

The TV was caved in and void of all cartoons. Destroyed by glass. Amid the chaos of broken glass, sparks and a small stream of white smoke, was more glass. Greenish in color. Shattered in thick fragments. A large chunk can be seen in plain site, as to the cause of the damage.

I slowly stood up and looked at the carpet for the rest of the TV. Shards of the screen were everywhere. A few sparks had appeared and quickly disappeared out of existence. And then I saw it.
