kitchen management job.
the only work I had..........for some reason I don't consider shit-shooting a job.
we had it coming to us though.
Business has been terrible since the recession started and the owner decided to really cheap out on the quality food that we ordered in. He cancelled any paid for staff parties (christmas too), no more free meals or staff drinks. So that sort of killed employee morale and the quality of product and service took a nose dive.
The snowball effect kicked in.
.....and then he walked in Monday morning and told us to shut it all down. We're done. A kick in the ball surprise we should have seen coming.
We had won awards for best Vancouver pub food for 3 years in a row....until this year.
Oh well.

Calibri I'm familair with.
Cantarell is nice, I've not seen it before.
Droid Sans is okay. The small "e" is a little odd but would be easy to get used to.
Nobile is a little too large. Less words per line means post appears to be longer.
Swanky is making me go blind.

It's a popular score too. From one of the Remote Control composers too, so it should get as much attention as Angels & Demons does. It might cause a wee bit of a ruckus. The Remote Control fanboys do tend to be overly passionate and quick to the defense when it comes to that music.

See, I figure if we get enough hits from fanboys, some of the smaller reviews of lesser known projects might grab the attention of at least one person. And sometimes, just one is enough for me. :)
I don't know about you, but when I'm searching for something obscure that I like and when I stumble upon something written that's quite extensive and informative, I'm happy. Hopefully, we do that for someone.
See I'm looking at the stats and it looks like both our "Factotum" reviews have gotten views from a few searches. As has Marnie, Pope Joan and Lesbian Vampire Killers.......and what the hell is "l'affaire farewell"? Is that on our blog?
Not surprisingly, my Elfman and Beltrami reviews have gone completely ignored. They're a dime a dozen and not as many fanboys. I'm surprised Mike Patton's Crank 2 isn't really getting any attention at all.
----
Remote Controls Productions is an army of score composers Hans Zimmer has created. They all sound like him and quite often write a lot of what he's supposed to be writing. A lot the scores that a single RC composer is credited to is several different composers....sometimes as many 8 different guys are really behind it.
It's a controversial technique in the scoring community, and a lot of people do not agree with it.

I've heard that too.
And it might very well be true. However I don't think it's quite as bad as Zimmer.
Kanno has a few ghost writers beneath her, but so do a lot of bigger composers working in the business today. Quite often their ghost writers go on to become famous too.
For instance Shirley Walker would often clean up and write a lot of additional material for Danny Elfman. She did such a good job at emulating him, Warner Bros. hired her to score the Animated Series.

Something about that film just clicked with me, it was the easiest thing I've written yet. I had to do a little research about the practical side of it (the camera used etc) but the rest just squeezed out of me like ... erm... are you eating this time?
I usually just jot down some quick reference points as I watch the film and hope that I can remember what it meant when I get to write it. Sometimes I pause and write more. I only watched it last night so it was really fresh in my head.
Or do just write as you go and go back and touch it up here and there?
Totally this.
Sometimes my paragraphs jump from one thing to the next erratically in the finished piece and that usually means I've written the paragraph and shifted things around to try and make it work. I do that a lot trying to get something that doesn't read like ideas thrown at a wall.
It helps if you're an insomniac.

I liked Inception but something just didn't click with me. Maybe because it has actual set rules and stuff it's even more off putting then how the Matrix was pretty nonsensical so you just sat back and watched the story and fight scenes but with Inception because there's structure plot holes like having to do dream in a dream in a dream instead of just 1 big dream maze that would achieve the exact same thing is more problematic.

The rules and stuff are what really got me into Inception, though I can see why the fact they had to keep things so grounded in reality even in the dreams is offputting. They had such neat details in all the dreams, Arthur's is my favorite.

That's another thing, you've got dreams as for theme and world and they don't do anything all that cool with it. Just some M. C. Escher crazy stairs. Plus the whole 5 minutes, 1 hour, 1 week, 10 years thing killed all tension and suspense for me because there was no real time limit, the arab guy was falling for half the Joseph Gordan Levitt was getting everyone into an elevator for half the movie. And the way the rules were presented felt like it was all being made up as they went along like how Ellen Page finally asked what happens when you kill a memory guy in a dream after they had just killed 2 dozen of them. That'd be one of the 1st things I'd ask.

It's not real because they died in the dream and are stuck?
The other thing that these types of movies I always have problems with is the if you die in your dream you die for real thing. Why can't people just video game their way through? Like getting hit by a truck will take a bunch of your hearts but you won't die as long as you have 1 hit point. Or actual useful hacking like in the Matrix hack a gun to have unlimited ammo or a horse that's bullet proof. Now I didn't hate Inception there's just a bunch of stuff that should have been done greater than they were.

I have died in dreams several times. Woke up when I died but it was pretty unsettling. There was one time I got suffocated and I really felt like I couldn't breathe for a minute there.
The weird thing about Inceptions more realistic take on the dream thing is that I've seen people accuse it of being a Paprika rip-off many times. XD Get the feeling they only watched the Paprika/Inception mash-up trailer and didn't actually see Paprika, which is pure dream craziness and logic throughout. And a great film!

When I said "...if you just pay attention" I wasn't directing what I said at anyone, I meant "you" in general terms.

I thought it was very like Paprika but not because of the "realistic take" but because of the complexity. That was a good thing for me because Paprika is one of my favourite Animes. :erm:
And that illustrates a good point about both films. Interpretation is key.

If I'm not mistaken Tigertail did some backdrop artwork for them while they were in Oregon.
I know it was a symphonic metal band from somewhere in the future. I'll have to check with him.

Were you ever interested in seeing that movie "Devil"?
It has a concept that has the potential to be interesting, but also it could very easily fall flat on it's face and end being more like a bad '90's Outer Limit's episode.
I haven't seen it so I can't really say how it is.
I grabbed it...you want?

I watched the trailer. Shyamalan is involved. That is either a good or a bad thing. It's 80 minutes long. That is either a good or a bad thing. I'm sensing a pattern. I'm totally interested, though. Anything that is a little bit unusual is worth a watch. Thanks. Send me one of those sexy pm's. Can you leave out the arty sepia shots of your man titties this time? They made me drop my sammich the last time.

I'll admit I was intrigued when I first heard about it, but it was in and out of theaters so quickly I never had time to go see it.
People groaned as soon as they saw his name appear in the trailer when I saw it first it before some other movie. Poor M. Knight.
The only one I didn't like by him was The Happening and I never had any interest to see The Last Airbender, but from what I've heard, I needn't bother.

It made me think of Phonebooth as I was watching the trailer. A really odd premise that will succeed or fail depending on the pace and the editing. I didn't bother with Phonebooth when it was released but I happened to see it one night on TV and it surprised me. I liked it.

It was all right. It was one of those movies I probably would have enjoyed more in different company.
I like Colin Farrell the more I see him.
Recently I've seen him in "In Bruges" and "Crazy Heart" and I really enjoyed him in both.

He did goof once or twice though.

New World, ALexander and Daredevil are the only ones I can think of that were terrible.
I've liked him in everything else.
Mind you I haven't seen Miami Vice, S.W.A.T. or American Outlaws.

I turned off Miami Vice. I was tired at the time and I'm not a great fan of Mann. I know, Heat... (be honest, it was really boring at times). S.W.A.T was just plain awful. I didn't make it to the end of it either.
Neither of those were on account of Farrell, though. I like him.

Paul Pope is an interesting artist. I think I like it.

I like Pope's style a lot. It reminds of yesteryear, only a little more twisted.
Except I never liked his Batman for some reason.
I'll bet I'm in the minority with that one though.

It was his batman that I first saw and I didn't like it. This one. It's awful.
So I hunted for more to see if it was all like that and I found I like his other stuff.

Tomdo you have any papercraft batman cowls? Or any superhero masks? I want to decorate my doll with one. And he needs a cape as well.
It's not a Barbie. One of these.

I just uploaded this for someone 'cos they wanted to hear it and the youtube one doesn't do it justice at all. It's just one song but its so good that everyone should have it.
It needs a decent set of speakers to appreciate.

I've never asked, do you have your PC wired to an amp or just regular desktop PC speakers?

Fancy schmancy expensive speakers. Why?

I was just curious. No hidden agenda. I don't understand how people can judge a score when they hear it through desktop speakers. I guessed you would have something better as music is a big part of your life. I have a Cambridge Audio amp wired to mine. It kicks some ass.

:D The rest of their stuff isn't like that at all. Just that one. It's fantastic. I've been listening to that since 1989 and it never gets old.

1989 :)
The first thing that comes to mind that I was constantly listening to back then and still do all the time is this track:

It'd be fun to make a compilation by the year.
Or a comp of a certain period in your life, like "Doc's Tunes : the High School Years".
........it can also be potentially embarrassing too.

Classic Elf. :D

 That's an amazingly good idea. My memory will need to be wired to some jump leads and then to the mains to remember but I'd do it.
We could post them and trade with everyone else.

fileserve has usurped rapidshare as the worst piece of shit filehost ever conceived. It's official.
Are we just doing stuff form things released in that year, or stuff from previous years that we were still listening to?
The latter makes it much harder to choose because there is so much.

02-22-2011, 05:02 PM
I thought of that too.
I was listening to a lot of old Beatles, SPringsteen and Floyd in '89 too.
I don't know how to work around that.

I'm going to stick to stuff released in that year. It might not be a true refection but it gives it some boundaries.
Some of the kids on Shrine weren't even born in '89. STS: where the old bastards go to shoot thread.

 you were listening to DK in '89?
You must have been a harsh little kid.
Closest thing I got to punk rock back then was The Who.
Didn't really discover any punk rock until Megadeth covered Anarchy In The UK....and I didn't discover that album until 91 or something like that.

My brother is 6 years older than me so I was getting stuff from him. There was no MTV over here so it was whatever friends and family were listening to that I was introduced to. Punk is in my blood. DK, Misfits, Sex Pistols. And then beyond that was Maiden, Sabbath, Faith No More, Killing Joke etc.

I might cheat a little. Go back a little. But nothing really further back than '85.
Want to make it 85-89?
If it catches on enough, we can move onto 90-94 and so on.

We actually remember the '80's the way they actually were.
They really weren't as flashy as the kids these days seem to think they are.
