I watched a short film based on a Barker story last night. Part of the Masters of Horror series.

And after that I watched Miike Takashi's one too. Fuck. It was taboo city. Very very freaky. There were pins. And fingernails. Together.

haven't heard anything on the extended "Nightbreed"....mind you I haven't been researching it lately. Haven't heard anything on the extended "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me" either.

Is the "Masters Of Horror" good? or is it a hit and miss depending on which one you're watching?

Totally Hit & Miss but it's different strokes for different folks.

Miike's is the only one that they couldn't show on TV because it is 100% distrubing, dead things in baskets and sadistic torture. Nasty.

Dario Argento's isn't great but it the only one that got cuts made to it. It had a fellatio scene cut from it, as you can imagine with argento it wasn't just regular fellatio.

John Carpenter's is good, if a liitle un-Carpenterish.

The rest of them are average to poor in my view. I've yet to buy season 2. They are on my list. You can find them to D/L individually if you hunt.

i have a link of all of them.....they're thrown in with a bunch of other horror/sci-fi movies and stuff.

I've been eying them for the past week or so.

None of them are scary but some are well made.

Best one was "Sick Girl" by Lucky McKee. It was brilliantly acted by the two leads. I'd recommend it.

And Takashii Miike's "Imprint". It starts slow but stick with it.

:D That's just the way we say things here in the future. God, it's nasty. I can't say why but I can understand why it wasn't screened. Have you ever seen a Takashii Miike film? He's "unconventional".

yeah...i've seen a few Miike films.

I actually just got to see 13 Assassins the other night at the local arthouse theater.

It's pretty hit or miss. One of my favorites is the Fair Haired Child, which isn't really a superstar collaboration at all, but it's a well done story with beautiful visuals. It was directed by William Malone, who I actually think is really creative and super talented, even though the movies he works on have been lame stuff like Feardotcom. Other episodes I'd definitely recommend watching are:

Imprint- directed by Takeshii Miike (this is a very STS movie, btw)
Cigarette Burns- directed by John Carpenter
Sick Girl- directed by Lucky McKee, who did May- Angela Bettis is in this one too
Pick Me Up- directed by Larry Cohen, writer and director It's Alive
Pelts- directed by Dario Argento (Meat Loaf is in this one). Some of the best gore scenes in the history of the show in this one. If you're an Argento fan, he also did an episode called Jenifer, but I don't think it's as good visually.
Sounds Like- directed by Brad Anderson, who did Session 9
The Black Cat- directed by Stuart Gordon. Bonus: features Dr. Vink from Are you Afraid of the Dark. The actor, not the character.

The one episode I would say you should absolutely avoid is Chocolate. The Fear Itself episodes are pretty lame too, and I wouldn't recommend them.

13 Assassins just came out here........I don't how long it's been out in the future though. I've heard NOrth America got about 20 minutes cut out of it though. :(

I have Nightmares and Dreamscapes! The first episode is the one with the guy fighting the toy soldiers, right? Probably the neatest episode from a visual standpoint. Umney's Last Case is my favorite episode, though, but this is probably mostly due to my bias towards hardboiled detectives and William H. Macy.

It is pretty mediocre, overall, but it's fun! I like King's movie/tv stuff best when they let him be really weird, like with Kingdom Hospital.

I've always been afraid of King's "horror" adaptations and such......I'm afraid they're going to come off as really goofy. I thought "IT" was terrible....i got about 30 minutes into the TV "The SHining" and went somewhere else (I think a "What I Like About You" repeat was on). Salem's Lot stunk like....like....STS.

I liked "The Stand" at the time....but I haven't seen it since it first aired.

I'd best go, I want to watch a film before I'm forced to get some sleep. Laters all. :)

It's definitely not typical Miike fare, and although it is one of my favorite movies of all time, I don't really like it for the same reasons that I like other Miike stuff. I don't know if I'd use the word cute to describe it, but the movie is pretty touching and some scenes are just hauntingly beautiful. In a weird way, I have more respect for Takashii Miike because he can make movies that are that legitimately good, and then do stuff like Zebraman.

Yes, ma'am. It was a good episode based on a pretty good short story. Typically the stories are always better, but this one was so interesting to see unfold on screen. It was even more interesting because it was a 45 minute drama with zero dialog. I didn't think they'd pull it off, but they did. I was pleasantly surprised!

I'm looking forward to The Road Virus Heads North and Autopsy Room Four, both of which are based on stories I've read and enjoyed.

Back on the subject of Masters of Horror, the only good ones I've seen are Sick Girl, Imprint and Cigarette Burns. Most are terrible, the worst I've seen include Dance of the Dead, Dreams in the Witch House (awful Lovecraft adaptation) and Homecoming. I'm pretty sure most, if not all, are up to watch on Netflix Instant Play. I may get around to watching the rest some day. I did hear Family was a good ep.

And what became of Masters of Horror after it was cancelled? Fear Itself on NBC. Anyone watch it? Another hit-and-miss kind of anthology. The best ep imo was "Eater" directed by Stuart Gordon. Episode Family Man is a close second.

To join in (late) on the current discussion, I've seen all the Masters of Horror, Nightmares and Dreamscapes, Fear Itself, Masters of Science Fiction, etc. etc. etc. I love horror anthologies because each segment is easily digestible as opposed to sitting through a whole shitty 90 minute horror film. It's true they each have their respective hits-and-misses but I tend to look back on all those series fondly, so I'd recommend them as a whole (it's really up to the viewer to decide anyway).

I ended up watching "The Descent 2" last night.

While no where near as good as the first one (it was one of my favorite creature features), it managed to keep my attention the whole time.

I wasn't at all fond of any of the characters though. And they beefed up the monsters too much. Although there were some good tense moments and some dookie in my pants shocks.

THere was a pleasant surprise/twist in the middle of the film, although a little cheesy, was quite welcome too.

In the end, like the first one, I felt terrible. Althought this time, it felt too forced. I sort of knew what would happen this time around, unlike the first one, where that terrible feeling was unexpected. Me thinks it has something to do with David Julyan's emotionally draining and sad end titles music.

I'm gonna give it a strong 3 stars out of 5.

I'm looking forward to May and Vacancy tonight.

Watch Vacancy first to get it out of the way...then reward yourself afterwards with May.

I have a buddy who keeps saying watch "Vacancy".....he also told me to watch "Unknown" and that turned out to be a predictable snoozefest.

I saw a weird foreign (I think it was Belgian) horror last night called "Left Bank." It was one of those insidiously creepy movies, not overtly scary, kind of in the vein of Rosemary's Baby and The Wicker Man. I'd recommend it, except I'm not sure what the hell was going on the whole time. (Cool ending, though...makes me want to rewatch it.)

"Spoorloos (The Vanishing)" gave the wiggins big time. A Dutch film that has one of the most horrible ending I've ever seen. I stuck with me since the first time I saw it....which was probably almost 20 years ago.

Like always, go with the original and not the American remake....(although an early performance from Jeff Bridges is fun).

I didn't think I was claustrophobic, but after reviewing some of these films, I'm beginning to wonder if maybe I might be. The 2 Descent films, Alien, The Vanishing and this new film "Buried" all give the extreme wiggins just thinking about them.

I saw The Ring in one of those cheap theaters. You definitely don't get the impact of that final line of the movie unless you watch it in a packed theater like that.

To me, combining Ringu and The Ring would make the perfect movie. The Ring had such a creepy atmosphere, and the video tape used for it was much better and really felt like it was the kind of thing that could mess with you after you watched it. The ending in The Ring was much better than Ringu's too, which I found to be strangely upbeat. However, Samara has nothing on Sadako. I work in a mental health facility! It's not at all scary, though. More funny than anything, most of the time. We once had a resident who didn't want to use the bathroom because she thought Tony Blair would know if she took a shit. She wrote him letters about it and everything.

I saw a weird foreign (I think it was Belgian) horror last night called "Left Bank." It was one of those insidiously creepy movies, not overtly scary, kind of in the vein of Rosemary's Baby and The Wicker Man. I'd recommend it, except I'm not sure what the hell was going on the whole time. (Cool ending, though...makes me want to rewatch it.)

It honestly isn't that great, I couldn't really follow it for the most part and it didn't even resemble a horror film. I thought the ending was kind of cool but I don't really know how it fits in the whole picture. I'd hate for you guys to watch it on my account and then think I have bad taste in recommending movies or something.

It sounds good to me. Good = interesting. I watched Romero's Diary of the Dead the other night, it wasn't an enjoyable film but it was interesting.

Again, it gave off the whole "Wicker Man" vibe (and a little bit of "The Stepford Wives"), but I can hardly recommend it to anyone but a horror aficionado like me. I'll agree with you that Diary of the Dead was watchable. But the more recent Survival of the Dead was just plain awful.
