But the way everyone called it a dragon was neat. The score is really good, I like me some Elliot Goldenthal. The camera shots used to really stretch the image in slow motion was captivating. The confrontation was a nice scene. And basically any death was great. The funeral/dog scene was the best part.
I have the special edition on DVD, watched the theatrical version plenty of times to notice the differences in the extended edition.


To be honest, I enjoyed all the alien movies. Even Alien 3 and Resurrection, for various reasons.

Of course, they're a whole lot inferior to Alien and Aliens, but still, Alien: Resurrection is a million times better than Alien Vs Predator.

AVP1... so-so. very so-so.
It's neat that she makes the Predator an ally.
There was so much potential for that movie.
It really opens up the mythology between the two races.
The only thing that really bogged it down was the poor choice of actors and some quirky scenes.
Overall, I don't mind watching it. The sets are nice, the mythology behind the races, the companionship of the predator, the Queen in the snow (albeit it's a little laggy there), and the whole concept of a gaming reserve inside the temple.
Harold Klauser is okay. The commercial release doesn't do much good as the really good cues are in the movie and the film versions are 10x better.

AVP2 is tonnes better than 1.
it really explores into the technology of the Predators. There really is no alliance in this one. Except the standard rules: don't kill them if they don't have a weapon.
The chain weapon is awesome. The mask technology is really a nice step up from previous Predator films. The original Aliens sounds are reintegrated into the film, the shriek especially. The elephant sounding one? yeah. i creamed myself. And just so much chaos, death and Brian Tyler :awsm:
There's a lot of complaints that the commercial release suffers blaring and clipping from the percussion.
I sort of agree.
But I don't have an original CD myself, so I have no real idea. It largely depends on who rips the music. And how.

I can't be unbiased about Alien 3 because it completely ruins Aliens. ; ; And Aliens is my favorite. I get depressed even thinking about its existence because I'm too emotionally attacked to my entertainment. :laugh:

Predators is an extremely fun movie.
The whole atmosphere the movie sets is really nice.
The music is exquisite. The Hounds has a really eargasmic howl in it. It's one of those horns that can howl at very low registers.
Plus the "alarm" sounding sfx in it. Really appealing enough to make my ears wiggle. Really nice ending to it to. Very ominous.
John Debney hit it off really well.

i remember watching it in the theater when it first came out and enjoying it quite a bit. it had some cheese in it and the alien/human hybrid plotline seemed kinda silly but overall i thought it was a nice addition to the alien universe. oh yeah, couldn't stand winona either. i think the one thing that kept the alien films from sinking into forgettable lame horror film territory is that they were always directed by good directors that knew what they were doing. scott, cameron, fincher and jeunet. great casts too. you can't argue with the actors they used throughout the four films for supporting roles.

AVP1... so-so. very so-so.

Alien 3 completely invalidated Aliens. Ripley could have turned down Burke's offer and not only would it have not changed the outcome (other than her being alive,) but there would be nothing for the company to fuck around with in Resurrection.
And it was a stupid move. For the short term drama of the autopsy scene they sold out the earlier film. I believe Fincher's reasoning was that because the actress playing Newt had grown up, they couldn't use her. Bullshit. Just lazy.
Here's what I'd have done:
Ship crashes. Impregnated Ripley and bits of Bishop only thing recovered. Film proceeds as normal. At the end, when the company man shows up, and Ripley has resolved herself to die...
Hicks turns up. He's fine, he says Newt's fine, and their just waiting for her to return. Now Ripley suddenly has something to live for. She thinks it over, she thinks it over real hard, and then simply says, "It's a queen." Hicks immediately understands, or helps her break away from the company to make the jump.
That would have rocked.

Time travel can be tricky. And always is.

Alternate universes, you have a plethora of K's. Even ones who don't even work for MIB or where MIB doesn't even exist. Which is an absurdity to say; rather, MIB hasn't been created yet. As MIB would never exist at all, there wouldn't be a need for MIB in the other universes.

Unless we're talking in terms of dimensions. Carl Sagan proposed that the more dimensions you add, the less likely the subsequent dimensions are able to see, understand and maintain sanity from seeing any part of the additional dimensions.

That is to say, a 4th dimensional being can witness and interact with 3 dimensional beings, yet a 3rd dimensional being cannot witness nor interact with a 4th dimensional being (to a certain extent, 3rd dimensionals can only witness and interact with the first 3 dimensions of a 4th dimensional being).

Let's, for a moment, impose this hypothesis upon the alternate universe paradigm: In a alternate reality where the MIB does not exist, would be considered 3 dimensional and the 4th dimensional reality would have MIB operational, at any level.
This can be validated by merely having the 4th dimensional MIB agents enter into the 3rd dimensional reality and tell their alternate selves that MIB would exist if they started it.
Now the 3rd dimensional agents would have no idea what's going on, what's being talked, and how to proceed with MIB. It wouldn't nearly be as identical as the 4th dimensional MIB, but probably in Hollywood land since it would save budget :rolleyes:
There is simply no way (yet to be discovered) for the 3rd dimensional agents to find their way into the 4th dimension reality where MIB is at full capacity and deep into the earth's history.

okay. It's one of those timeline stories where things eventually fall back into place through events that are inevitable.

Dude still loses his arm, either way. World is saved, either way. Family history, with a new time paradox of having met one's younger self.

I think this is one of those that could be an infinite time paradox.

Where as they succeeded in this mission, the younger K and J will have to grow up in their own timeline and endure the same events, more or less to a degree.
Although the prison is now more secure, there's still the off chance that the dude will find a way to get out or disable the shield.

The problem is that you are trying to apply a formula to sequels. There really isn't one, beyond giving the same rate of return as the previous installment. That is, if the first movie overperformed, your budget goes up, if it underperforms, it goes down. Even with this there are exceptions. Sequels can be remakes (James Bond.) Sequels can be sequels (Alien.) Sequels can have the same cast and crew, or they can have a new cast and crew. None of these have any bearing on whether the film will be either a critical or commercial success. What does matter are the same things that affect regular movies...Is the idea any good, and do they have the resources (time-money-people) to pull it off.
When trying to guess (and all you'll be able to do is guess,) whether a film will be a critical or commercial success (or both or neither,) the things to keep in mind are: Has it been rushed? (If it's got a release date before a finished script, you have a problem...although Casino Royale made it work.) Was it part of a larger plan from the start? (Generally good if yes, but try explaining that to people who hated the Matrix sequels.) Was it shot back to back? (Usually good, but again, try explaining that to the Matrix haters.) Is it an apology? (Usually good, as in Last Crusade, MIB 3 (apparently,) and Looney Tunes Back in Action...Which was better than Space Jam, but wasn't really good.)
So in the end, what makes a good sequel is what makes a good regular film. If you take shortcuts, or think you can coast because you have a built in audience, you're cruisin' for a bruisin'.

Reese. Each time I think of Aliens, I can't help but think the aliens were lucky to face Hicks and not Reese.

One of the things that bums me in Alien3, just like Lye, is the fact that the end of Aliens seem moot. She saves Newt, Hicks (who is, technically, probably badly wounded, but I'm sure they could have patched him up, maybe some cyber arm or something), and all for nothing. I'd have loved to see ripley fight even more to protect Newt, maybe Hicks sacrificing his life to protect both of them in an epic fight against the alien and Weyland's men.

Too bad. that's one Alien 3 is my least favorite one.

Lots of kids go on vacation memorial day weekend, and I am happy to watch a rerun so that they don't miss an episode of a continuity heavy show like Korra. A long time ago, when I was around 14yo, one of my mother's friend, who worked in advertisement and communication, told me that most kids show were there solely to sell merchandise. That was pretty true back then, with GI joe, Transformers, and many other cartoons of the time. Heck, most toy lines had a cartoon, even stuff like Starcom or Visionnaries. TV shows were just ads in between ads.

When I was in retail, I worked every holiday except Christmas and alternate Thanksgivings. The only reason they ever closed was there was NOBODY out shopping on those days. So, they weren't going to make any money anyway. These days I'm glad to have extra time to hang out with the Mrs.. (Like today.)
A lot of places never close. You can always find a few people to work a holiday, but not everyone. Bus lines go to a reduced schedule, but they don't stop completely. Mail stops, but that's because you need a lot of people to maintain the basic infrastructure necessary to keep it all working.
I've been inconvenienced any numbers of times because a holiday closed something I needed. (Usually a bank.) But I don't begrudge anyone their time off. Any there are things you can do only because a lot of people are off on the same day.
And that's before you consider how much a driving force in the economy is. People blowing money on manufactured special occasions is what keeps the whole thing going.

Target audience/demos are what matters in terms of advertising money, though. I want shows like Korra to be as profitable as possible so we get lots more of them.

This applies less to shows that are big on selling toys, since merchandising money can be pretty huge. I will gladly buy some Korra merch when it's out there, though probably not figures.

But figures are the only things I want from Korra. Star Wars has spoiled me with their Ice Cream Maker Guy and fat 6 tited lady dollies.

Marceline very nicely pointed out that since many families go on vacation on holiday weekends, there is no reason for Nick to air first run episodes of serialized programming, since so many of their viewers might miss what was happening.
I don't watch Nick these days, but I never knew them to do Memorial Day programming anyway. My comments were mainly aimed at a spectacularly self-absorbed idiot.

As for old actors...

Go and tell that to Stallone. The guy was, what, 62 ? when he directed and headlined "Expendables". And, if anything, he has one hell of a fight scene with Steve Austin. Even if I know the head scissors was done by his stunt double. still, he had really good fight scenes in most of his "recent" movies.

Stallone kept up with his physicality.
When Arnold became the governor, he really let himself go.

I'm about halfway through Buffy season one. :) I always have a million things I can nut but I'm not very good at actually nutting them these days. Think I'll go nut Totori and Corpse Party while I wait for Meruru. If it doesn't come today I'll be so bummed. Maybe Memorial Day delayed it.

How is the music for Game of Thrones? I know the composer did the score for MoH (2010) and it was superb.

It was pretty good through the first season.

In the 2nd it's sort of gotten lazy in some spots and noticeably electronic in others which really takes away from the atmosphere and setting.

The first OST is worth picking up. Highly recommended.

Haven't listened to the 2nd on it's own yet, but there was an interesting little battle song on Sunday's ep that was a bit different.
