So I saw "Drag Me To Hell" today...man, what a great movie. Vintage Sam Raimi, what with all the Dutch angles, exaggerated sound effects, and cheesy gross/violent humor. I really loved it...and Chris Young's score. I know I said I'm not much of a horror score guy, but Young's work stands on its own, in my opinion.

Then I ruined the experience by sneaking into "Land of the Lost"...wow, what a terrible movie. I should have known it from the crappy trailers, but still, I figured since it was free... but yeah, don't waste your money. And Giacchino's score sucked, too, I'm sorry to say.

Drag Me To Hell was pretty decent....it was a nice return to the over the top cheese ball horror for Raimi. How about that bloody nose? I think alot of people were disappointed because they were expecting something more like a japanese remake horror movie, instead they got a Raimi-brand horror. The trailers were very deceiving...especially since they billed it as "From The Director Of Spider-Man"...and not Evil Dead...but what would you expect from a movie called "Drag Me To Hell"? And Chris Young? Top of his game. He always mangages to add a touch of class to his horror scores......Hellraiser, Species, The Gift? excellent stuff.

Land Of The Lost just wasn't on my to see list. I don't think Giacchino's score was that bad though....it felt like a journey back to the old ALex Courage scores from the 60's Star Trek.............you know what? I keep saying that......perhaps i should do my research and check to see if Courage also scored the original Land Of The Lost series....that might be why Giacchino's score sounds like it does.

I stick by my earlier review and reiterate that Land of the Lost was a steaming pile of Sleestak poo. I'm not too familiar with the original '70s series myself, but this just felt like a really blatant parody of bad movies. And, even if Giacchino was using Alex Courage (who wasn't composer of the original) as a template, I feel he did nothing more than emulate the style and failed to provide any thematic backbone of his own. In a summer that produced his "Star Trek" and "Up" scores, this is certainly his weakest work. Then again, I can't really blame him; in my opinion, comedies and slasher flicks are the worst foundations for musical composition.

I can't get enough of Drag Me To Hell, though. I loved the bloody nose...and all the other horrendous shit Raimi threw at Allison Lohman (including the toothless gypsy woman eating her face...twice!). And I am SO glad it wasn't one of those shitty J-horror remake films. God, I am so fucking sick of those things. Seriously, The Ring and Dark Water were the best, The Grudge was just pushing it. The originals are so much better, but at this point it's all starting to repeat itself anyway. A Tale of Two Sisters (i.e. the American remake, The Uninvited [also a great horror score by Chris Young]) was pretty decent and the original Shutter was all right, but...ugh! Don't get me started on this. (Oh, too late, you say?)

Man, look at us...having a real, civil, adult conversation. I say, bring on the shit! :-P

It's not Giacchino's strongest score, but it sure beats the Djawadis and the Bates in the business. It's okay. I've listened to it twice since i got it. Can't complain myself.
Don't get me started on slasher flick music.....when it's good it's excellent, when it's bad it's boring. Beltrami's scores for the Scream series were absolutely wonderful. Hermann's Psycho, Carpenter's Halloween theme, Debney's I Know What I Did With Jennifer Love Hewitt Last Summer and Glass' Candyman were all above the actual films they were attached to...well, Psycho is both an excellent film and score.
And the asian remake flicks? I dunno....even some of the originals are really lacking. The Eye was horrible and so was the original. The Ring, though is quite frankly one of my favorite movies. But Dark Water? That wasted my time. boooo. and The Grudge was okay.

You brought up very good points...Psycho, Halloween, Candyman and Scream are all exceptionally well-done and career-defining genre entries, and the exception to the standard rule today. For the most part, though, contemporary horror flicks are all sound design, and I hate a score muddied in a bunch of sound bytes. James Newton Howard is another one of those great horror score guys, though (for his accompaniment to M. Night Shyamalamading-dong movies).
