They would save money and rise profits, guaranteeing stability if they got rid of the physical end of the business IF all the physical customers became digital customers, which would be a hard sell.

(Please notice where I put the "If" in the above supposition.)

Honestly, I think that if LC got the full rights to the entire franchise, the stuff we know and love would suffer from pressure to appeal to the newer generation of fans. I.E. we'd get a lot more stuff from the 9-12th era and the greats that really need and deserve to be heard and appreciated would be less present.

Not to mention that LC is still a small company, so other series they work on (Summerland, Bed & Breakfast, DS) would suffer delayed releases.

For better or worse, my opinion is that separation of the classic series from the modern is only a good thing.

Does anyone have working links for 8th Medics 'Eark Dyes' storyline? Is it worth messing about with LC's supposed $35 US for download (that if it follows true to pattern will miraculously gain about $7 when it hits my bank)?

I think it'll be a long time until they completely ditch the physical format. If nothing else it gives them something to sign at Conventions!

But I do believe they really should investigate "Print On Demand" for some of the lower-profile/lower-sales stuff.

And possibly talk to people like GraphicAudio to see how they do their 'digital bundles' where you get a bunch of stuff on a nice USB key.

Increasing the size of the studio would also increase costs and actors agents would see this as a good time to ask for more money. A good-ish number of the current staff of LC also have other full-time work they participate in - so the need to train new technical personnel would cut into that, also inflating costs. Etc etc.

The hiring of more employees does not always mean that the quality or frequency of a product will increase.

Eccleston's Doctor was eight years ago. The gap between Capaldi and Eccleston will be the same as between Eccleston and McGann. The distinction of what is "classic who" and "nu-who" will eventually crumble away into inconsequence.

Of late we've had a few retro voices on this forum squawking in accents I haven't heard since the demise of Outpost Gallifrey. They don't like the direction the show is going in. They think it's a travesty. I have to say I sympathise with them - I felt exactly the same way when John Nathan Turner took over.

I've watched the show since 1963 and my personal opinion is that Russell T. Davis and Steven Moffat have served us Who in a more dedicated and satisfying way than JNT ever did.

Their combined tenure on the show is a year less that the beardy Hawaiin shirt wearer.

I never grumbled about JNT's shitey shift - I just watched something else instead. Perhaps the nu-groany moaners should do the same...

So you're saying that they should just continue on a the knife-edge as they are now?

Who mentioned increasing the size of the studio? They don't have their own studio. But now that you mention it - they probably could do worse than investing in their own studio that they could rent to others when they don't need it.

But I was thinking more of people like Richardson and Spragg; those that have to do all the juggling of actually managing the releases.

As for the rest - all the actors/writers/directors/art-design are done on a release-by-release basis and paid a flat-fee.

The definition of the "classic" era was established when the B originally specified what LC could and could not cover in their audios - at least for me. As for the tv series, I have always considered it more of a constant, with no differentiation based on years. I mean, really, the B&W days could be considered "Classic" with the inclusion of color as the beginning of the modern era.

And for the record, I wasn't complaining about the modern series - I was suggesting that the B would push LC to focus on the newer medics and thus the ones that they have become known for would be featured less.

Earlier this year (I'm too lazy to look up the post), someone on the board postulated that only the 1st Medic's body actually aged -- later regenerations, being regenerations, I guess were presumed to be frozen in their aging process. Until now, there has been nothing to contradict that viewpoint, especially since we have seen 11 spend a long period of time between the Ponds and Clara without appearing to have aged visibly.

But we have now been shown definitive visual evidence in both McGann and Hurt that regenerations do in fact age visibly. Now the thing is, if one figures that 11 went so long after the Ponds without looking to have visibly aged, just how mind-blowingly long of a period of time must actually have elapsed for Hurt to be seen to have aged from the NotD to DotD?

that was one of my posts, and i'd thought about that too...i think that millennia, rather than centuries, had gone by for Hurt and that he and everyone else completely lost track to to all the timey-wimeyness of the war. that and all the timey-wimeyness had an adverse effect on the aging process. again, just my opinion.

LC's major problem right now seems not to be in making the product but in mailing it out. A couple of extra staff in the sales dept, answering emails and physically posting out product would help a lot i think. With little training required for that work. If they got A-go's medic items that are currently in stock and did not offer them (at least initially) as a d/l, just posted out physical items without pressing anymore for now, I'm sure many of us would be quite happy with that. Then give them some time to load everything on their system, and maybe a month down the track, start offering the items as d/l's too, and then look at how to go about producing new items. Perhaps they could even look at employing someone formerly from A-go to get everything up and moving?
I just hate the thought of ordebull or eyetoons being the only supplier of nu-who audio. That would backfire pretty quickly i think.

CDs rot.

Depending on your local climate, you have 15 to 20 years until they start dissolving even if you never get a scratch or a smudge on the shiny side.

Yes, you bought a Rolling stones cd 30 years ago and it still plays fine.

Honestly though... It's been ten years since you put that disk in the cd player.

:)

It's not the cds that make the product feel real. It's the cd cases and covers.

They can make an 12 gig pen drive smaller than a US Quarter.

In the same space as a cd jewel case they can put both a hard drive and a sound system as good as an ipod, including tiny woofers.

Even then.

It's all really about book shelves.

You want to put all your pretty stuff on the many book shelves all over your house.

It's not enough to own things.

Your friends have to be jealous, envy and covet.

That's how you win.

Around 2005, I was interviewed by HE for a job there. The office was staffed by one lady and a part timer. There was room filled with blank CD cases, inner sleeves and covers. Plus boxes of processed CDs. There was also another room where staff who were employed by a "sister" company doing mail outs. These staff also worked on sending out CDs when the new releases came out. I didn't get the job as I found out later that I was "a fan" of the series. HE do run on a staff shoestring, and to be honest, i think they do a good job all things considering.

When I moved into the house I live in now I noted that there were no book shelves.

We had a vaguely similar thing last year.

We put in building plans that had one wall where we've decided that we don't need the serving hatch that's currently there and a doorway that won't be needed. So we thought "Use the spaces for book shelves instead. And in future we may well need those holes in the wall back and we can just remove the shelf bits."

The note we got back from the council? "Please remove references to Book Shelfs (sic) and replace with Multimedia Storage as not to be seen as elitist."

I agree. A sense of aesthetics, history and decoration is important. We're tactile and sensory beings... and books exemplify those very human impulses. I like digital just fine, it's nicely portable and convenient, but I still want my things - or at least, my favourites. You can still have a well-ordered domicile and own stuff.

Many people's brains work in the kind of way where "I liked that" equals "I want to go there again". So that landlord would have been right had he made an exception for the books you actually liked and want to revisit. As it stands, he's wrong and, deservedly or not, sounds like the sort of person who does NOT read and consequently feels the need to battle "elitism". (Or the sort of landlord who hates the idea of a tenant "doing damage" to his walls.)

Because you might want to read them again? Because you wanted to be able to pull the book down from the shelf to recommend it or lend it to a friend? Because books, in themselves, can be things of beauty which improve the look and feel of a room? Because in a home you like to be surrounded by stuff that you like?

You know why I have bookshelves of books? Because I like to read and reread them. I like my guests to have something interesting to flick through. I like pretty pictures that aren't backlit.
None of this has anything to do with elitism.

In fairness I should clarify a bit (mainly as Mrs N has just reminded me of the circumstances) - it was the PARISH council three years ago (doesn't time fily!) planning lot that 'complained', rather than the proper council. It was a case of 'inverted snobbery' as they're all terrified that film-crews from programmes like "Grand Designs" might start turning up and doing-things.

We live in a place where it's all far too easy to start humming the theme tune to Midsomer Murders if you're not too careful ...

Because you might want to read them again? Because you wanted to be able to pull the book down from the shelf to recommend it or lend it to a friend? Because books, in themselves, can be things of beauty which improve the look and feel of a room? Because in a home you like to be surrounded by stuff that you like?

If you want to live a Spartan lifestyle then strip every room back to a soulless, show house aesthetic. I'll stick with my messy home, where at a moment's notice I can put my hand on a book I love and enjoy it all over again.

Between myself, my parents and my brother I can safely and with confidence state that we have the same amount or more books than our local public library! and it's not a small branch library either... :D

I have gobs of books on digital media but there's nothing that can beat the weight and smell of an old book in your hands when it's ucky, dreary outside and you're curled up warm and toasty revisiting your favorite places via the pages of an old beloved book.

(plus in my house they're great insulation!)

When I moved into the house I live in now I noted that there were no book shelves.

Not to get too far off the discussion that's unfolding here, but has every one seen the new cover art for "Court of the Evil Medic" that's now on LC's website? I was already fascinated by reading the synopsis, but the cover art is making me froth at the mouth and really want to listen to it. I honestly haven't been this excited by a cover art for an LC audio in awhile... :)

If LC stopped offering CD's and only offered digital downloads, should they stop breaking up stories into CD-sized episodes?
Or does the breaking up of stories into episodes perhaps have nothing to do with CD size limits, and more to do with deliberately mimicking the serial nature of the original TV show? The Beeb's unabridged audios don't have breaks, so it's not like it's a sine qua non of Who.

I guess they'd initially stick to the 4x25min or 2x50 as they're formats that they're used to.

The Bright at the End special is being floated as a new format that might eventually become standard.

Is the only reason that they are still printing cds instead of dvds is because it's too expensive to change their infrastructure, or if it's outsourced, too "mean" to cancel their contracts?

Last year, I burnt some stuff to DVD for my kid, and then he says can I burn 6 cds instead so that he can share it with a friend who doesn't have a dvd drive on his pc.

I end up doing repeated hospital visits. It never gets easier, but trust your nurses. They are the best invention since, well, inventing. Trust them and they will take care of you. Mostly when I am there I channel surf the tv, but I also bring the ipod full of music, most of it shares from here. So when I go, a few of you go with me. They are giving you pain meds, yeah? Usually, just let the zone-out carry you. (sleep is never an option for me, as I always get put into the ICU with iv liquids, iv pain meds and insulin drips. They check my vitals every hour and draw blood every two. Sleep is elusive that way...).

Yea the meds are fine. I'm just sooo tired and I want my own bed. How long do you normally stay in for? X

Amanda
12-06-2013, 09:59 AM
It depends. My stays are shorter these days. Usually only a day or two. I get pancreatitis as a complication of my diabetes. I used to end up in the hospital every 3 months or so for a week at a time. The first time was 12 days. I have better health care and access to insulin, so that helps. I have not been for pancreatitis in over a year though. This last time, it was for..err women's issues.

But when I am in, I end up NPR (nothing oral), so I cannot eat or drink anything until the numbers even out. These days, once they feed me I usually go home the next day. I cannot take my psych meds, so they give me anti-anxiety stuff via iv along with the other meds. it sucks, but ya know. It's the care of the staff that gets me through though. That and the music shared by friends here.

That's as much as I have been able to upload, and I was wondering if anyone had links for any of Gallifrey, Iris Wildthyme, or the Sarah Jane audios on google drive, 4shared, or mediafire. Much appreciated if anyone could and thanks.

Can't remember if they actually mentioned that or not - but I totally agree they should team up again - the 2 scouse medics worked very well together - as did the savage & the Edwardian...

The "This Is LC" Disc was a HUGE disappointment to me - I wouldn't bother if you haven't heard it. I hoped for some kind of docco history of how LC came to be, it's highlights & lowlights & thoughts on it's future - what I got was and hour of more of the usual 'we're REALLY GOOD, aren't we" rubbish, followed by what was basically a 10 minute trailer for the Hynch-Cliff boxset. The only thing that impressed me was Al-un Barr-nes, who came across as humble, intelligent and thoughtful. They could do with more like him...

Like I said new, but I can't use this site anymore. I've gotten 20 viruses blocked from this site. Don't worry the links to the two audios will remain, I don't feel comfortable returning to this site. Again I do believe you're all wonderful and such, but I'm off.

I suspect that the blocks were likely malware that was acquired elsewhere - since I have never seen anything like that and have been using this site for a good number of years.

My friends, I speak to you know from a hospital bed where in have been for 3 days with Kidney Stones ( the most painful experience of my life!!!) and could do with some cheering up. I have some LC audios with me to pas they time but it's still a scary , sad place to be. Lots of love x

I had two weeks with kidney stones - try to flush 'em out with plenty of fluids (don't worry, they don't hurt when they pass, only when they spasm through the ureter/s).

All the best Goldie - you'll get through it. Love from us all.

20 virus warnings?

Some antiviral programs tag stuff just because they don't know what it is.

I once believed a virus program that deleted a vital part of my boot start up and the hard drive was unusable until I reinstalled.

Just got done with CC - Tales from the Vault.
1. What UNIT is doing sounds like it would be competing with Torchwood's mandate.

2. Maintaining a vault of dangerous artifacts to be used in case of Great Big Emergencies is something we see the TL's also doing in DotD. Who's the primitive culture now?

guygardener
12-10-2013, 08:26 PM
The difference is that Timelords built those weapons themselves, well their grandparents did, and tucked them away.

Torchwood does not retroactively exist in LC's main continuity "yet".

Neither does UNIT's Black Vault either.

It's more like Warehouse 13.

Tales form the Vault is about putting stuff away TILL they know how to use it as a weapon without blowing up the world.

How about Frazier Hines and David Troughton doing a D2-off?

I can almost imagine the audio: Second Medic meets up with some duplicate of himself: one is DT, the other is FH. By the end, the audience is still left wondering which was the real second Medic(*). For this to work the two voice pretenders would have to maintain some degree of separability despite both trying to mimic PT.

(*) Because a more definitive resolution might imply that one imitation is real or fake and that might piss off half of the fans.

Have a download question. i usually do a couple file hosts premium to make downloads easier (not at home, but where i 'work' at radio station). I've had uploaded.net for 6 mths previously and thinking of doing the same again today as a popular site has some BR movies I'd like...
My question is: There are other token sites like Rapid8 that could also provide those links - at a premium level, I assume the ads are less and you can download more and many gbs at the same time. Which would be better? 6 mths with Rapid 8 with numerous hosts or just the one through uploaded.net (Rapid8 is 5 gb per day which would be enough for me to watch and slots are limited (but could be a sales gimmick) and days are a lot less than 6 mths). ......actually, think I've talked myself back into using Uploaded.net anyway, but thanks for reading this.

My gripe with the missing eps is simply the DVD release dates. I decided to wait off on seeing the eps because they were going to be released soon enough but apparently we're not getting them in the US anytime soon. Perhaps because they're vanilla releases? Would have been nice to know.

The Omni-Rumour as stands now can be summed basically as "Keep Calm & Carry On". We know it's coming, there are good reasons it's taking so long, but to reveal them would apparently be harmful. This from a source who works IN the Beeb. Patience WILL be rewarded.

Everything points to a VERY happy year in 2014. So think positive and stay cool... :)

I'm re-using the 'sit back and hope' attitude I adopted for previous missing episode rumours/news.
I deliberately haven't read anything about the next season of the show. I don't want to form any preconceptions as to what it will be like.

My gripe with the missing eps is simply the DVD release dates. I decided to wait off on seeing the eps because they were going to be released soon enough but apparently we're not getting them in the US anytime soon. Perhaps because they're vanilla releases? Would have been nice to know.

Oh if I know the corp as well as I do, no doubt there will be "Special editions" of the "vanilla" releases with extras later on.

This is almost a certainty. If you listen to the latest Radio Free Skaro podcast (which I recommend highly you do), about halfway in there's a very enjoyable & enlightening recording of the panel at Chicago Tardis with Dan Hall & Ed Stradling ex of the DVD range, who expain lots of the thinking behind releasing, etc. Hall is certain there will be Special Editions within a year, and explains why...

If he was fresh, Frazier would nail PT over DT. Lately, it seems he might be exhausted or maybe even just done up - he seems to be channeling himself more than anyone else.

OK so my dirty mind read that completely wrongly..... :D

I think also it's worth remembering that however anxious we all are to see "new" old stuff, nearly all of us have no idea what's really going on behind the scenes. Just scratching the surface shows it's not as simple as "episodes found, episode restored, episodes released" so it's best to let all parties do whatever they need to do and the BBC certainly are not going to announce something if it's not done.

We all win in the end :D

For some sad reason, this reminds me of Kermit the Frog.
A whole generation of kids are now used to hearing Kermit voiced by someone other than Jim Henson. They might eventually hear an old recording of Henson and say "that Kermit sounds wrong".

Listen to enough Frazier on audio, and maybe PT will start to sound wrong... Like maybe PT didn't know how to clear his throat often enough.

I wonder if they are thinking long term and planning for season collections using existing released discs but also adding new extras for the missing episode? I love my DVD's & as a show of support I bought all the downloads from iTunes of the recently returned episodes - I also pre-ordered both the DVD versions in the hope that my support goes towards funding more returns in the future'

but I must say I was well p/ssed off when I got my Enemy DVD & realised all I'd actually paid for was a DVD case & cover- not 1 single sodding extra - Seeing as we all know that the BEEB had them for about 5 months before their return was announced they could have at least got a commentary together & some basic production subtitles- if they'd thought about it they could have recorded the Press Announcement about their return & stuck that on the DVD - it would have been better than nothing.

I certainly feel us fans have been well & truly milked on the Enemy release- I hope Web of Fear DVD has more effort put into it- I'm gonna be fuming if in a year or so the BEEB released Special Editions & I end up buying them a third time

My complaints are only aimed at the DVD's lack of content- the actual story & restoration work is amazing & the story is so much better than I had imagined & very, very enjoyable

Hi.

I have created a new archive with formatted epub/mobi versions of some free books which can be found as pdf or web sites in the internet:

- The 15 Web stories from the Beeb
WEB short stories - Tardis Data Core, the Doctor Who Wiki (http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Category:WEB_short_stories)

- Two unofficial LC novelisations:
Sword of Orion - The Novelisation 2nd Edition by AntediluvianWhovian on deviantART (http://antediluvianwhovian.deviantart.com/art/Sword-of-Orion-The-Novelisation-2nd-Edition-326744784)
Spare Parts - the Novelisation by AntediluvianWhovian on deviantART (http://antediluvianwhovian.deviantart.com/art/Spare-Parts-the-Novelisation-329374904)

- Dimensions in Time - The Ultimate Edition
Teaspoon :: Dimensions in Time - The Ultimate Edition by Gary Merchant (http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=40252)

Thanks to the original authors who made these available and to the board member who told me about them.

I also updated the NA archive, and fixed lots of small errors. This is basically the same sort of update I made recently to the MA books with improved mobi versions and the use of my current regexes to find and fix formatting errors.

To be fair, Enemy is an unusual case. They couldn't release so soon and have extras. Dan Hall has gone on record as saying that it was a deliberate plan to keep the leaks to a minimum. It makes sense really as there's so many people that are involved in the extras and the odds are that at least one would blab everything. And imagine the uproar if they said "iTunes now, DVD in 12 months". Not everyone has or can have iTunes but DVD is a universal format.

Whatever way they went, people would complain.

You could do what I did and start with the Paul McGann strand (Storm Warning; Sword of Orion; The Stones of Venice; Minuet in Hell; Invaders from Mars; The Chimes of Midnight; Seasons of Fear; Embrace the Darkness; The Time of the Daleks; Neverland; etc.) and then branch out. Also, don't discount any particular medic just because you're not keen on his TV portrayal. I did this with CB so, initially, I missed out on some real gems.

Take your favourite of the Doctors and just start at the beginning.

Definitely DON"T start with Zaggrayus. Yes, it may well be tempting as it's got four Doctors on the cover, but the story will make very little real sense if you've not heard the 8th Doc stories that lead up to it.

(In fact - it's a bizarre story when you HAVE heard the 8th stories, but it's bizarre-to-the-power-wtf when you haven't.)

So I went to splash some cash and noted that it's one of 2 CCs that aren't $12. (It's like $30 for some reason).

No, there's not a conspiracy. It's just one of the few CCs that's a 2 disc 4-parter instead of the usual 1 disc 2-parter format (or in the cases of 1.03 & 1.04, a 1 disc 4-parter format). I listened to the one you mentioned on a train back home from visiting a friend of mine back in August. It's a real timey-wimey cracker, let me tell you. If you really like Peri, you'll love it. If she wills it ... I'd do it ....

Ah-hem ...

Here's a question for folks ... how did you discover LC?

For me, it was going to a BBC recording for a radio panel-show/sit-com thing (I can't remember the name) but one of the actors had to apologise prior to recording for being slightly gruff and off his game just a bit as he'd been "recording a fantastic comic character, who was The Law, all week"

This intrigued me and so when I got home I hit this new thing called Google and ... discovered all the rest of the stuff they did! I think, if memory serves, they'd probably just released that brilliant two-hander with PMcG+IF.

From that day ... I was hooked ....

Hello. I'm Nobber and I'm an LC addict.

It's easier to download everything, rather than to check anything up on Wikipedia.

I can start downloading ten movies in the same time it takes me to figure out that the first of those ten was a piece of crap I shouldn't be bothered with, which means that it would take me a hundred times the time to decide that I shouldn't download anything.

All anyone needs is the Back to the Future trilogy, after that you're just showing off.
