Davie, well now, that's just curious. Good job for trying, but sorry to hear it's still not working. Maybe it does get put on an endless loop when unavailable. Man... that's gonna get real annoying REAL quick if that's what it does now instead of just saying 'file unavailable' or 'file has been removed'.

Is it maybe worth us putting 'version 2' of this thread up? It's getting very tedious having search back through them all. On the up side, however, I was given a load of DVRs with BF 1 - 149, All the companion stories, All the lost stories, and a bunch of other stuff. As they're already in digital format, it wouldn't be too hard for me to put them somewhere on the Internets. I do think a new thread is needed though.

Sometimes it's great to look back at all those old annuals, target books and wallow in nostalgia. A friend of mine got given all the target books as a christmas present this year. I was up in the attic by NYE looking for mine again. But only found some, I swear I had a book with all the monsters in it and loads of the target covers - could I find it? No way, it's gone to the same place as all those missing biros. I'm assuming the Carpet People are reading it now

As for the story ... spoilered for those that haven't heard it yet.

The 'twist' was obvious from the first time Colin Baker opened his mouth. The dialogue was a subtle as being hit round the head a slice of lemon wrapped round a large gold brick.

Imlay, indeed.

My first exposure to the series came from (here in the US a station called) PBS. I didn't think too much of the 9th Doctor, but after a few years and when news got around that the Tenth's run was going to be over, I figured, eh.. why not see what the Tenth Doctor was like? Thank God for Megaupload, Megavideo (ahh the good old days when things were so much more simple and innocent), and online Whovians. Got sucked into the series. Imlay, talk about a stroke of luck for you to have been able to get them at your library! For me, still the only place I can get my hands on them is online.

Thank ya kindly! As I mentioned recently, our links for BF monthlies #91 and up have gone dead; I for one would appreciated any of those at your convenience! I'm a particular follower of 5 and 6, and my collection is especially spotty in the earlier end of that spectrum.

I also hope to be posting a veritable melodic pond of old-school musical treasures in the near future, so of your collection lacks the dulcet vocal tones of Jon Pertwee, Frazer Hines, and the (other) Go-Go's axing the musical question "I'm Spending Christmas With A Dalek", don't touch that dial.

Imlay, indeed! The only time I get to use my 2 years of high school French is when I have to translate a written letter from my friend over in France. Love her to bits and pieces but I have the WORST time trying to read her handwriting + the French. -_-U Always have to scan it, post it, and ask some French fluent person over at Yahoo Answers to tell me what it says.

I had a penpal in France back in high school and I was fortunate that my French teacher would translate the letters for me. I used to work in retail and you'd have the tourists who were native French speakers, and that was when it would be useful. I actually had a strong southern accent when I started learning the language but the more I learned the more I developed a more neutral accent. I got tired of my professor referring to the class as sounding like a bunch of French rednecks.

I've also managed to get the scores for the different series since Doctor Who came back. Using that and the theme from Battlestar Galactica I have never lacked for a ringtone.

My pleasure!

Of course - that does assume you can actually find what you're after on the site. So many ranges with so many CD/Download/Subscription/Ranges combinations I find it VERY hard to navigate at times. Who ever runs their site must be laughing his/her/their socks off at doing such crap work and getting paid and lauded for it.

Not sure if you're from the north or south, so here! Helaba or Bonjour! ^_^
I actually live right in the middle, so I speak both languages, though my Dutch is better by far.

Also, you know, just to be on the safe side, you should seriously consider taking the time out and uploading the stories you have. Not to share, but just as a safe, online, backup for yourself.
Exactly the reason why my entire iTunes library is saved on an external harddrive!

In the most simple of terms, we download more stuff than we upload, so, to adjust to all of our downloading (just from simply visiting sites, not from actively downloading any specially saved files), our speeds are set to be quicker to download stuff.
Hence the reason why downloading is quicker than uploading (even on a really good website on a really good day with next to no traffic on it eating up the loading speed of the site).

Aha now it makes sense!

I'll try and upload some more tomorrow, I'm afraid I won't have the time today ;)

Oh does anyone else have that annoying message at the top of the screen? Something about a template which should be replaced or something. Also my 'advanced reply' screen is all messed up, no matter how many times I reload the page I get the same result. The bit where you can see the previous posts has gone totally bananas, the posts are on top of eachother and the words all over the place; I'm having a very hard time trying to make sense of it all. I don't think it's my browser, I tried loading it in both Firefox and IE; I got the same result. It is the same on my phone. Any help would be much appreciated!

p.s.
For anyone who needs help changing the files from m4b or wav into mp3, if you aren't already aware, there are a whole slew of ways to get it done. The 2 easiest ways I've found are using zamzar.com and, if you want to have the program on your pc to use at any time, an extremely easy to use, very small program called Format Factory (it works on a whole slew of different format times, from video to audio to pictures). Had it on my pc for almost 5 years now and I love it. (Though it didn't help any changing the DW ebooks from mobi or pdf to txt. I had to use zamzar for that.)
Current versions of iTunes can do it for you, too... just look under the "Advanced" tab for an option to "Create MP3". I always do it because while iTunes can play the m4Bs, it will only store them in the "Books" folder, and I just like all my audio in one place.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but this is a 74 page thread. I just signed up for Big Finish and bought some Unbound series stories. But then I discovered there's a discount deal for all of them. If I bought the deal, would I have to repay for the stories I already own?

I too learned how to knit so I could make my own DW scarves. Simple stuff like garter stitch is perfect because you can just do it while watching tv without missing your show and if you check every few rows for mistakes you're good there too. Unfortunately, I suffer from chronic neck tension now so I'm not sure when I'll make another. I don't think I could work on it just one hour a day.

There's actually a joke amongst experienced knitters that there is no such thing as a Doctor Who scarf. It's just a prank played on newbs.

For all their faults BF generally tend to be pretty damn hoopy when it comes to things like this. If you've only just recently ordered them, I suggest that you contact [email protected] - give them the order number, ask them what you'ld like to do, and then see what they say. Put it this way - it never hurts to ask.

Oh, and make sure that you tell them just how bad you find the site and that if you'ld been able to spot the offer sooner, of if the site had 'automatically' suggested the offer based on the current order, you'ld not be in this position.

Well, that sounds dumb. But it's weird that they call DW and ST "competing SF franchises"... the truth is that for mostly coincidental reasons they've almost never been on TV at the same time. In fact one seems to get revived about the same time as the other runs out of steam... TNG came on about when Classic Who ended, and NuWho came on about when ST:Enterprise fizzled. Odd.

Just a quickie - anyone recommend a decent, non-private, torrent (or direct download) site for Aussie TV? "Talkin Bout Your Generation" is back, but not appearing on sites like Demonoid. Hopefully not a .bz site as they tend to be a PITA to register and tend to be very unforgiving of ratios being down due to sharing rarer stuff.

Actually, I've had a big goofy grin and a double thumbs-up plastered on my face since I heard about it, like Obscurus Lupa (http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/teamt/ol) reacting to the the news of a new Cynthia Rothrock movie, but I admit that 99% of it is due to the fact that the villains are a Borg/Cybermen team-up, which seems like a can't-miss combination. As a villain-o-phile, it's something I've been wanting to see for a long time. I'm pretty ecumenical in my geekdom, and let's face it, The 7th Doctor comics in Doctor Who Magazine featured Death's Head (The Crossroads of Time, DWM #136), which means acknowledging crossovers with Marvel's Earth 616 and at least one of the TransFormers' myriad alternate timelines, and the Sleeze Brothers (Follow That TARDIS!, DWM 147) which really doesn't bear thinking about as anything deeper than an April Fool's gag strip. Compared to those two, having the TARDIS drop in on the Enterprise makes perfect sense.

Also, IDW's current Star Trek/Legion of Superheroes crossover was one I lamented upon hearing about it, but I'm reading it now and it's actually pretty fun. (I also recall an equally scoff-worthy announcement about a Star Trek/X-Men crossover from Marvel years ago that went down surprsing well too.)

Besides, as Dr. Philip Sandifer points out at his excellent blog TARDIS Eruditorum (http://tardiseruditorum.blogspot.com/2011/01/placeholder.html), the very nature of Doctor Who is dropping him into somebody else's story, any kind of story, and watching how he proceeds to change all the rules. So don't look at it as Doctor Who lowering itself to Star Trek's level, if youre a purist. Instead, think of it as pulling Star Trek up to the dizzying heights of Doctor Who, if only for eight issues.

I HIGHLY recommend getting this via iTunes (1 ish an episode) as they're doing it "crowd sourced" - I've already commented that it's a bit of an odd-ball and that AS IT STANDS it's a bit unsatisfying that the proper story isn't finished. But it's a Catch-22, though, as there won't be closure unless enough people pump some cash their way.

Arguably they should have done a proper full story first and then released, but there's still definite potential here for some really good stuff and taking the "Who" universe off in an entirely different, but still as 'compatible', direction.

Put it this way - I think BF's "Graceless" series with it's 'oh, look how adult we can be because we can mention SEX!!!!!!!!!!!! and VIOLENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!! A LOT!!!!' take on a Who-verse-spin-off pales compared to the potential in this series which is properly Mature without having to draw attention to how it's done.

@Lady Galadriel: Good luck getting Dark Horizons. It's been delayed until this fall.

I was sorting the various audios I've got laying around and it occurred to me to pass along some some information that some may not know. I personally like to take my audios, join them into one big file using an mp3 joiner program, and then use itunes to down convert the bit rate to 64 kps to save space on my hard drive. I also like to have them in mp3 format since it's fairly universal. However, I know some people like the m4b format since it can be bookmarked. For those that don't know, m4b is Itunes audiobook format. You can listen to the file, stop and listen to something else, and then come back and pick up exactly where you left off. It convenient except that you're limited to apple devices. I like it but not everyone uses an ipod and changing them back when I want to pass them along is time consuming. So I googled an alternative. Turns out, it's pretty easy. When you import mp3 files into itunes, you can right click and select 'get info' and, under the options tab, change the media type from 'music' to 'audiobook'. The file will move into the Books section and it doesn't change anything.

On the other hand, if you'd prefer to actually change the file type from mp3 to m4b, that's easy too. Import the file into Itunes. Under edit>preferences>general tab>import settings, select 'aac encoder' and then select the bit rate you'd prefer. Then highlight the file, right click, and select 'create aac'. Itunes will convert the mp3 to m4a. This will take some time so do all of your books overnight. It doesn't actually change the original file, it creates a new one. Right click the new file, select 'show in windows explorer', and a new window will open with the file highlighted. Now go to Tools>Folder Options>View Tab> and unclick 'hide extensions for known file types'. Rename the file from m4a to m4b. This method doesn't seem to automatically move the file to the audiobook section. If you have a large amount of books to convert, you can google 'batch file extension renamer' (sorry I lost my link), and do the whole lot in a few seconds. You are now free to delete the original file.

Incidentally, if you'd like to convert a m4b file to mp3, just do the opposite. Edit>preferences>>>>>> 'create mp3 version'.

@DrakeRavensmith
Your info is correct but as a user of m4b i you missed 2 important reasons why people use m4b-files and not mp3.
One is the quality of the audio after compression compared to the same filesize mp3. The aac is said to provide a higher quality audio for the same filesize.
But the most intresting one is not being able to bookmark while listening but the use of chapters while creating the audiobook.
If you want one file of the separte mp3-files you can keep 'chapters' within the file.
Take a (Doctor Who-)book of 15 chapters, credits, prequel, and so, even with a title for the chapters than you can create one m4b-audiobook-file and if you listen to it in the iPod you can read the name of the chapter and skip in steps from one chapter to the next one. This is something they have tried with mp3 but as far as I know is still not standard.
Or take the BF-monthly stories, i convert them to m4b combining the separate tracks to the separate episodes combine it with the extra's also comined to 'behind the scenes' chapters like 'interviews' and 'music'. This way i listen to the individual episode if i'm travelling for 30 min or and hour or something like that.

As you explained combining to one big MP3-file and then compressing tot a (very) low quality and advising to encode to aac (second time quality loss) for a m4a-file and rename it to m4b is not usefull for someone that uses m4b as it was created for the ipod (and some others as i understood but never checked). Better to create a nice quality m4b :-)

Hello all, I hope everyone is well?

It's nice to know that in a couple of days the filming starts for the latest series :) Although I don't really want to wait it'll be good to have Doctor Who back on in the winter months (in the UK at least) its a lot more spooky watching Who when the short evenings make it dark outside!

@ffwho

If you have a better method for creating m4b files, please post it. I don't actually use them anymore. I just change the file type from books to audiobooks if and only if I'm going to listen to them on my ipod. Often, I just have them playing on my computer or through the stereo while I'm doing something. Thanks for mentioning the chapters. I'd actually forgotten about that because I typically just listen to something from front to finish. I actually don't like listening (or watching) Doctor Who unless I have time for the whole thing. To be fair, if you only wanted to listen to one episode you could just stop when the cliffhanger music begins. At this point it's bookmarked and the chapter naming becomes moot.

As far as the quality of the audio, while I personally go all the way down to 64kps, I do point out that you can set it wherever you want. I've read repeatedly that for spoken word audios (which encompass the vast majority of the Big Finish Doctor Who listening experience) 64 is indistinguishable from 320. That said, in the future I do plan on purchasing all of these audios and a very large external hard drive. At that time I would love to have audiobooks with proper chapters and a higher encoding. So I ask again, please post the method needed for accomplishing that. I would be very grateful. Thank you.

I just wish iTunes had an option so that you could set a default so that long-duration files are set to 'remember position' by default. I prefer the 'single-file-to-a-play' approach, too, but have lost track of the number of times I've stopped, synced my iPod, then continued to listen later only to find I'm back at the start as I'd forgotten to set the 'remember position'. Grrr. It's easy enough to flick through to where I was, but, still, GGrr!!!

I tend to find that I don't like how my iPood (a Classic) displays 'Audiobooks' - perhaps I've been overlooking a setting for years, but it always seems to ignore the Artist (or Album?) tag and just displays a long list of ALL the books with no segregation.

In fact - I just wish iTunes/iPod would let me store/display my files in a proper 'Tree Structure' that *I* can define in my own way.

---------- Post added at 09:27 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:18 AM ----------

I've read repeatedly that for spoken word audios (which encompass the vast majority of the Big Finish Doctor Who listening experience) 64 is indistinguishable from 320

It's very subjective as we've all got difference hearing ranges, listen on different gear in different places and circumstances - BUT - for the style of play that BF produces if you go that far down you loose a much of the depth of the experience as the music/sfx are really crushed. So, yeah. you can hear the story, but not as intended with a lot missing. A bit like watching a Technicolour Movie in Black-and-White.

With my particular set-up, ears and listening-habits, I find 128 to be the lowest 'acceptable' rate, but I'd say that 192 is probably the real 'sweet spot' to balance Quality:File Size.

Your mileage may, of course, vary.

As for straight, single speaker, normal audiobooks - 64k is fine and, sometimes, if it's a really good recording, even down to 32k. (YMMV)

catt42
02-19-2012, 11:36 AM
I encode all my stuff at 96kb, there are on the rare occasion mild tinny bits, but it's not really distracting.

Also, since I want to cram everything I own onto 1 card... well, it seems I've quickly approaching my space limit due to 32g being the maximum microSDHC can do. :-D

I find I actually love the Sansa players because of the way they deal with Audio books. (At least the way the Clip+ and the Fuze+ do, haven't tried others).

DrakeRavensmith
02-19-2012, 02:33 PM
Yeah, I admit that I don't have the best ear. Even before I developed tinnitus I probably wouldn't have noticed much of a difference. I can tell when it's full music but the special effects and incidentals just don't jump out at me. Even the Sixth Doctor adventure 'Doctor Who and the Pirates' didn't sound bad. It doesn't help that the various postings of the files vary wildly in bit rate. I have just enough OCD that I'd prefer everything to be at the same rate. Also, I can't just listen to an audio, I have to be doing something. Taking a walk, working on something tedious on the computer, or more rarely driving somewhere keep me focused on what's going on. When I start buying the CDs I'll probably listen to them without first ripping them or anything but I doubt I'll be wowed. Like you said, your mileage may vary.

@catt42 I love that mentality. Having all of your audios on a piece of plastic the size of your fingernail is flat out amazing. Don't worry though. Soon enough, the SDXC cards will be available in micro sizes.

Just did a little experiement myself based on listening on my laptop with iTunes, fresh 256 AAC rip from CD, default EQ.

BF 256k downsampled to 64k = 'muddy', but just tolerable and listenable
GraphicAudio, same, = very tinny, and unlistenable. Like listening on Longwave.

So obviously the source material has a big impact, too! :)

Blimey, that looks a lot better than the Coventry one I went to a few years back. Was VERY underwhelmed by that, all crammed into one corner of the Transport museum.

I flatly refused to believe that the costume they had on display for Michelle Ryan's character (Lady Christina?) was the real, as-worn-by-her, thing; for a start I'd say she's at least 5ft7 and the manikin it was on was only 5ft, and (primarily) she's got a very nice rounded pear-shaped backside and I can only really describe the manikin's derrire as 'pert'. And it was flat-chested. Which she isn't.

The dalek display was fun, though. The New Series Daleks (the best design ever, IMHO) were nicely combined with some very rattly animatronics that gave them (by accident, rather than design, I'm sure) that Classic feel of them wobbling just a little too much on set. :)

I went there last summer when I was in the UK and I can honestly say it was the most geeky thing I've ever done- but it was absolutely brilliant. It was so much fun, in the beginning you have this sort of interactive toury-bit where the 11th Doctor guides you through several 'rooms' by videoscreen (he's trapped in the Pandorica 2, they had a spare). Suddenly you hear the TARDIS materialise and everyone, kids and adults alike are just awestruck. You get to go through the doors and into a console room vaguely inspired by the current console room, and it goes on from there. There is a forest of Weeping Angels, and even three live sized, talking, exterminating Daleks in their spaceship! After that you get the exhibition bit which is just gorgeous. They have props from Classic and New Who, and it all looks fantastic. It is ridiculously expensive but I'd almost say it's worth it.

My daughter got to go to that, and I was properly jealous. Seeing her in a picture with real-life Daleks was pretty awesome, though. And she bought me 4th and 5th Doctor coffee mugs, which was brilliant... I'd asked her for some oddball, mundane DW product that nobody would ever bother importing to the US, and she totally came through.

As to the bitrate thing, I confess that most of my BF holdings have been acquired in such a manner that, erm, it wasn't me determining what the bitrate was (I'm quite poor at the moment). But like Nobber, I don't easily tolerate anything below 128k. Everything I rip myself is at 320k. I have really absurdly vast digitized music collection that takes up almost 1TB, which lives on a 1TB drive with a backup copy on another 1TB drive, and with that much space to fill up it seems absurd to me to rip CDs at anything lower than the maximum quality short of lossless. I'm also incredibly meticulous about my tags and file info. That's mostly because I spent many years amassing a CD collection that topped out at over 3000 discs, and then I had to sell it... I ripped it all at 320 first, though, as insurance against my later tearing my hair out because I couldn't hear all the subtly nuances of my former My Bloody Valentine records or whatever.

Much the same as myself!

But then I look at the 'playcount'/'last played' stats on iTunes and I do wonder why I even bother syncing my 160gb classic considering that far too many (non Drama/Book) tracks have a play count of 'zero' ....

But I'd still be bloody annoyed if I lost it all! :)

If you have a better method for creating m4b files, please post it. (...) As far as the quality of the audio, while I personally go all the way down to 64kps, I do point out that you can set it wherever you want. I've read repeatedly that for spoken word audios (which encompass the vast majority of the Big Finish Doctor Who listening experience) 64 is indistinguishable from 320. (...) So I ask again, please post the method needed for accomplishing that. I would be very grateful. Thank you.

It was some time ago i started to use m4b for the chapterfunction and since i create them with Adiobook Builder (by Splasm Software: Thoughtful Apps Given Form (http://www.splasm.com)) I won't say it's the best at the moment, maybe it is maybe it isn't, but it works and it is simple enough to understand how it works.
About quality, 64 was good enough for spoken books with not much detail and on basic mp3-players, but with the books spoken like a 'performance' and added sounds/music/storytellers it's more dificult for the mp3-conversionsoftware to create a good sounding mp3-file.
This is why 128 is used as a minimum (less chance to get muddy/echo sounding audio) But when re-converting (creating another quality or filetype) such low quality audio will most of the time result in losing much of the original (CD or HQ-download) details.
But at the end, I also am more happy with a low quality download than no download at all ;-)

Thanks for the info. I don't pay for software if I can help it so I googled it again and came up with this free program which I have tested on Big Finish's free download of part 1 of Blood of the Daleks. (As a side note, the files are encoded at 160kbps. They give you the individual tracks and then one big mp3 containing everything including the bonus features.) The program is called Chapter and Verse and you can find it here:

Loden Software Chapter and Verse (http://lodensoftware.com/chapter-and-verse/)

It allows you to take mp3s, convert them to aac by launching iTunes (my itunes freezes the first time I start it up so I had to close and restart and then all the tests went fine), allows you check the metadata, add photo, name the chapters if you like, add/remove chapters, and save the project info for later tinkering. After all that you can preview the file if you like and then it will join the file into a single m4b file at which point it'll ask if you want to add it to your itunes library. Itunes itself doesn't seem to support chapter skipping but the top display will cycle through album, artist, and chapter number so you can wait a few seconds and hop around like that. On the ipod, you can jump chapters.

So far the only problem I've encountered is the conversion. Chapter and Verse will let you set the aac encoder wherever you want it but, once you actually convert, the finished files come out at 16kbps. 16. I noticed immediately. On top of that, it changed the itunes settings to match this. Turns out that both programs have to have the exact same settings. I chose a custom setting of 128kbps, 44.1 sample rate, and stereo. After saving those settings on both itunes and chapter and verse, the encoding worked as promised.

Just in case anyone was thinking of posting anything to seems rapshre have capped their free user dl limit to 30kb/s so it's very, very, very slow and may well time out before it finishes. Oddly enough this doesn't apply to the paid version.

The rpdshr thing has driven me mad all weekend. There's an argument that if people don't pay for the pro thing then they will up the limit so brave heart as they say and stay patient and it may revert to before.

An a different topic I see the dr who experience that they are building in Cardiff now has a roof. After reading the description above I'm really looking forward to it opening. I just hope I don't cry like I did when my parents took me to the Blackpool exhibition when I was 4

I pay for a Rapidshare account and Uploaded through a $100 pre-paid credit card and it works for me. I don't mind paying a bit for all the amount of stuff I get. Plenty of music sites, etc... And Mediafire and 4Shared are both cool as free users. Deposit Files can be tricky sometimes.

Indeed, happy days! Mind you there were some cliffhangers that were stinkers! Take this gem from Death to the Daleks death to the daleks cliffhangers - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKoyHrmqjHs) and skip forward to 1:13 for part 3's terrifying cliffhanger ;)

Hello,

I am looking for help again in putting together an audio chronology, this time based on the Cybermen....from the Cyber history instead of by Doctor.....

Could you help me out with that?
Thank you all again for your help! I really appreciate it!!!!!!!!!

Off the top of my my head, I'd say that the order we see them appear on TV is their chronology, too. Bar, of course, BF's "Spare Parts" that comes before The Moonbase.

EDIT ...

D"OH!!!

Before "The Tenth Planet" of course, not The Moonbase.

I thought there were a couple of other audio books that took place in and around the time just before the Tenth Planet....

Seems about right. Not entirely sure where the most recent appearances, where they look like Cybusmen but seem to be written as the original Mondasmen, fit in, though.

Actually, of course, I really meant 'The Tenth Planet" a few posts back, not 'The Moonbase"

I'm not sure about the New Series ones, to be honest, now that you mention it. Obviously the ones that 10th encounters are CyBUSmen, but is it definite that the ones 11th meets are CyBERmen? Can't think of anything that confirms/denies that?

A member of my global web of shadowy informants and unindicted co-conspirators recently sent me a metric pantload of Doctor Who novels in PDF format, many new to this thread, and others that were here before but now with cover images and in manageable filesizes. Since Megaupload took a lot of the old links down, here's all the prose fiction from my TARDIS library available once more. Get it while it's hot:

Actually, of course, I really meant 'The Tenth Planet" a few posts back, not 'The Moonbase"

I'm not sure about the New Series ones, to be honest, now that you mention it. Obviously the ones that 10th encounters are CyBUSmen, but is it definite that the ones 11th meets are CyBERmen? Can't think of anything that confirms/denies that?
It's way ambiguous. The ones in "Pandorica Opens" seem to be Cybusmen because they have a line about the TARDIS explosion affecting "all universes" and use the (godawful) "delete" catchphrase; however "Cyberships" are also mentioned and we know nothing of the Cybus guys being spacefarers (and their ships visually resemble the ones from "The Invasion".

The ones in "A Good Man" *seem* Mondasian, because there's no logical reason the small faction of alternate-universe Cybusmen should suddenly be operating on a massive interstellar scale in the normal universe, *plus* the telltale Cybus "C" has been removed from their chests. In "Closing Time" it's a little weirder; I think the buried Cybership has allegedly been buried for hundreds of years which really doesn't tally with either Mondas or Cybus timelines (unless you assume time travel a la "Attack" for some reason). However they again don't have the "C", don't say "Delete", and do use the old Mondas catchphrase "You will become like uzzz". YMMV.

There's a weird little hitch in "The Next Doctor" too. Although the Cybermen are explicitly Cybus-y, the Doctor seems to recognize the Cyber King and calls it a warship or some such. I guess we're just supposed to assume the the parallel development of both types is just so absolute that they always come up with recognizably the same technology, but that has always sounded a bit dodgy to me.

Hello,

I am looking for help again in putting together an audio chronology, this time based on the Cybermen....from the Cyber history instead of by Doctor.....

Could you help me out with that?
Thank you all again for your help! I really appreciate it!!!!!!!!!

There's a page in my Chronology now for the Cybermen, from their POV, based upon the dating given in Lance Parkin's Ahistory: An Unofficial History of the Doctor Who Universe from Mad Norwegian Press, and just plain guesswork. Any entry noted [AT] stands for Alternate Timeline, and [TT] stands for Time-Travellers, which means they're occurring in the Doctor Who universe in that order, even if the cybermen involved are coming from a later or sidewise time period, but I can't narrow it down any further than that.

... but that has always sounded a bit dodgy to me...

If in doubt ... blame it on The Time War.

Or then again, there's this site, working primarily off of the history put together in Cybermen by former CyberLeader actor David Banks: History of the Cybermen - The Cybermen - The Doctor Who Site (http://www.thedoctorwhosite.co.uk/cybermen/history-of-the-cybermen/)

Thank you MadKalnod
I will take a look at that.....

My main reason for doing this and the Dalek chronology is to listen to everything a little differently....
I have listened to all of the Doctor Who TV series and Audio Books in order and now I want to listen to them in different way....
My commute to work is an hour there and an hour and a half home so I have a lot of time on my hands and I need to listen to something or I go stir crazy....radio with tons of commercials just don't cut it for me....

Just watching one of the "Justice League" animated movies. Has Claudia Black in it, and, wow, each time I hear her voice I can't help but marvel (or should that be DC. Haha ...) how great an audio-only actress she is. So natural and relaxed. Wish she'd do more for BF than just Stargate.

You should see her on "Farscape". She was AWESOME in it. I really wish BF would do some stuff related to that show... :(

I understand. The comic continuation is pretty damn good as well. I just got my girlfriend into it. At first, she wasn't sure. Then Rygel farted helium, and it prompted her to watch more. XD

Oddly enough for me it was getting The Peacekeeper wars on DVD that prompted me to track down the full series and watch it properly. Like a lot of UK watchers I suffered very sporadic and spotty original air broadcasts, and loosing access to The Sci-Fi channel didn't help, either. Or the BBC2 aborted showing in about 2003/4-ish.

Who Lover lol you sound like the opposite of me. My motto is (at least with online stuff) 'if it ain't free, it ain't for me'. (And only pay for the really really good stuff.) But hey, to each their own, and I'm glad you're happy.

I'm a community radio presenter for a station that pays a high copyright fee to play anything it likes. I still find using Rapidshare and one other file share a fast way of getting stuff putting in 20 albums a month. But I don't own a credit card, so have to buy a $100 pre-paid which sucks sometimes.

Sorry, my last post was a bit on the rude side (too brief, really).

Indeed, @besthead was right, I was looking for the BF (see above) and did not want to be "too specific" (I didn't want to be the one responsible for yet another link killed), but I was nevertheless overjoyed to get a reply that fast, anyway.
So, thank you (both) again!

Unfortunately, once they got the thing working, they absconded with it for the mid-1970's, taking as many cases of Smirnoff Ice as were necessary to convince young Louise Jameson and Mary Tamm to sleep with them while they were still in their early 20s and the peak of their blistering hotness. Haven't heard from them since, and can't say I blame them.

What? Don't look at me like that. Every technology invented by man gets put towards sexual/pornographic purposes within its first ten uses. It's like a law or something.

Or, as Moffat put it in "Coupling" ...

I want to spend the rest of my life with the woman at the end of that table there, but that does not stop me wanting to see several thousand more naked bottoms before I die, because that's what being a bloke is. When man invented fire, he didn't say, "Hey, let's cook." He said, "Great, now we can see naked bottoms in the dark." As soon as Caxton invented the printing press, we were using it to make pictures of, hey, naked bottoms! We have turned the Internet into an enormous international database of naked bottoms. So you see, the story of male achievement through the ages, feeble though it may have been, has been the story of our struggle to get a better look at your bottoms.

In my head, I've always just assumed that the Mondasian Cybermen met up with the Cybus ones, and the 2 merged. Cybus ones, after all, don't seem to suffer from that rather inconvenient "gold allergy".

If in doubt ... blame it on The Time War.

:)

Or this. :-D

I've just noticed that the old '70's Doctor Who Sound Effects LP has just been issued on CD! I lost my vinyl copy due to some ill-advised LP-loaning to an aspiring DJ... anyone have a copy to upload? And dare I ask if anyone has either or both of the original '80's Doctor Who - The Music LPs?

Thanks kindly.

ow... Then I think the best thing to do next is to ask the question over at Gallifrey Base forum. (http://gallifreybase.com/forum/) They have a separate corner for the audio's, somewhere about two thirds of the main forum index page. Post there and you're likely to get a quick reply.

Also, if you're a Facebook user, Big Finish has a Facebook page which used to be quite active. Not sure if it still is or if they deal with questions there, but I guess you could give it a try.

good luck!

Yes, please. Also, I dug up my disc of The Worlds of Doctor Who, and the first half at least is more or less unplayable. WHY is it so hard to dig the classic series music up on-line? All I get is 198 choices for the new series # 3 and shit...

Is anyone else even considering re-upping some of the material on the soundtrack thread, or have they given up hope? I can help some. Err...as soon as I recover it...:erm:

At least that plank Freeman won't be in it. I'd refuse to watch it on principle.

lol Just be glad it'll be with the current BBC version. I've heard that the US station CBS will be rolling out their own shot at a modern day Sherlock (though they've already admitted that The Mentalist is very much so an embodiment of that) with, get this, Lucy Liu as 'Joan Watson' which will no doubt try to work on that Holmes Watson chemistry in their relationship.

:)

Yeah, I read about the CBS idea earlier today and thought much the same. But the idea of Lucy Liu makes me happy in a special place.

Just don't tell the missus ...

And in the meantime, here's a nice musical interlude from YouTube

So there exists a Doctor Who novelty record from days of yore, Who's Dr Who, featuring music by, among other Who actors, Frazer Hines. My friends discovered one of the songs and decided that, for obvious reasons, there needed to be a Two/Jamie video to it.

This is that video.

Sweet news, Nobbler. I've been wanting to hear some more of Mel, honestly. I recently got done listening to "Bang-Bang-a-Boom!" despite reading a few negative reviews of it. Heh, heh... Have you seen my signature .gif? Yes, Two and Jamie really can't stop clinging to, climbing on, laying on, holding hands, making innuendos and touching each other. Really, no other companion duo comes close in their constant invasion of personal space. "Look at the size of that thing, Doctor." "Yes, Jamie. It is a big one."

Frazer Hines has two other songs on the Who is Dr Who? album: Who's Doctor Who? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_IAhse1fCE&hd=1) and Punch and Judy Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3y2yCamqLE&hd=1). Jon Pertwee and Roberta Tovey also did some novelty songs.

Speaking of lines that don't take much imagination to make even dirtier, GaspingMenace on YouTube has some stunningly hilarious "Dirty [companion name]" videos. The Zoe, Victoria and Romana II videos, in particular, are just epic.

From http://www.bbcamerica.com/anglophenia/2012/02/doctor-whos-day-roundup-to-boldly-go-where-no-doctor-has-gone-before/

News about the DW ST crossover.

Doctor Who’s Day Roundup: To Boldly Go Where No Doctor Has Gone Before
By staff | Posted on Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Two of the biggest sci-fi titles of all-time — Doctor Who and Star Trek: The Next Generation — will join forces in their first officially commissioned comic-book crossover. Released by IDW Publishing, Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 will launch in May. In the eight-issue series, the Doctor and his companions will team up with Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise against an unholy alliance between the Borg and the Cybermen. Scott and David Tipton, the authors behind Star Trek: Infestation, will be assisted by Doctor Who writer Tony Lee, with artwork by J.K. Woodward.

Here’s the cover:

How disappointed will the Doctor be when he discovers the U.S.S. Enterprise is not actually bigger on the inside?

Here’s what else is going on:

Doctor Who is set to return to production on February 20, but Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith has kept busy in the off-season. Matt, a product of the stage, is giving back to the Royal Court Theatre that gave him his first professional acting job back in 2004: he’s been named patron of the Royal Court’s Young Writer’s Festival, a showcase of new playwriting talent from around the UK.

As we love listening to this guy talk about the stage, here he is talking to The Guardian’s Andrew Dickson. Notably, at the end of interview, he talks briefly about the upcoming season of Doctor Who:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuD5JTf2jHs

Matt also revealed, in a recent interview with the Sunday Mirror, that he’s a big fan of the director Steve McQueen, whose recent film Shame featured fellow Who alumnus Carey Mulligan, alongside Michael Fassbender: “I think Shame was brilliant and Michael magnetic in it. One day I would love to do something similar and maybe work with Steve *McQueen.
And here’s the reason we’re telling you this. Matt continued: “Of course I would get naked for a role. I’ve got naked on stage so why not on screen?”

The Doctor Who Facebook page has celebrated reaching 2 million fans with a message from Matt Smith: “Doctor Who facebookers!!! All 2 million of you, thank you for your support!!!! I hope you enjoy the new season!!! We start filming very soon!!! Will keep you posted on Facebook!!!! The monsters are coming!!!!”

Sega America have released a “making of” video for the game, Doctor Who: Worlds in Time. Doesn’t matter if you’re a gamer or not: this video will warm the cockles of your Whovian heart(s).

Lots and lots and lots more on that page.

All I can think of saying about that is

Ahem...Today on the 1st of March, I finally brought my last DWM via boat. There is something really wrong about reading a Christmas issue in March and 'sneak preview' of the 2011 Christmas special. I shall now pay the extra $3.50 for the direct air edition [that arrives about 2-3 weeks after the UK date] and read about all the good stuff coming up in March. [that's $17.50 Aus - about $7 pounds I think per issue]. If anyone in Australia is interested, here's what you can give your local newsagent (not just speciality shops). Tasmania and New Zealand would be different, I think. [by sea]. So, those ordering by boat will receive the DWM with the 2 covers [Seeds and Terror] on the 28th of March. Cripes!!!
