That's one thing about the DVD/Blu-rays here - at least they're affordable here. Luckily Aussies seem to love stuff from the UK and will actually be released here, though there were still many things that weren't released - that really annoys me (I'm talking what gets lumped as "Cult" TV).

I've just been going through my old DVD magazines (in the early 2000's Australia had about three different DVD magazines going - I won about 100 or so DVDs between them, luckily) and note that a lot of the old complaints still apply. Things like certain titles being released overseas, and not here. Or taking so long to be released here. A lot of our DVDs miss the features that are present on overseas releases.

You'd think companies would learn but, no, they still continue with their crap. No wonder people buy online when they get dudded here. And why do we still have Region coding???!!!! I'll buy myself a region free Blu-ray player soon (only AU$100 in Big W), just so I can watch overseas Blu-rays (not that it matters with Region free ones).

Ah, that's my rant I just had to get out. Sorry.

...continuing the rant for you...

What's even more annoying for medic fans is when they decide that we no longer need some of them so they go out of print here (eg M@rk of the R@n!, T!mel@sh and others) or go on special order at a higher price (eg Fr0nt!0s) so you have to buy them OS anyway. Add to that the fact that the logos on the spines of the Aus ones are different to the UK ones so they don't quite match on the shelf. Or that the UK ones often (or is it always) have a nice silver/grey case and a paper insert with the additional info.

I also hate it when they release new series Blu-Rays for things like the Xmas specials and series vol 1/vol2 then release a complete series with all of that plus extra content. The people most likely to buy the series are the ones most likely to want the full series and extras.....double-dipping or what? Just like the music market which releases special editions, deluxe editions, anniversary editions, walmart only edition, target only edition, itunes edition etc with a slightly different extra track or something.

I am ALL-TOO familiar with all these woes - and more, besides.

Not only are 5" figures preferred - they are nigh impossible to get here in the Colonies without costing a plunger and a gun-stick.
(Although, the reason for the shift to the smaller 3.75" figures was initially due to oil prices being off the charts - which is why 5" ComicBook figures stopped coming with diorama bases and then went to the "Build-A-Figure" insert. However, when oil prices dropped, the figures' cost didn't lower and the better inserts never returned).

Anyway, I also long to get a full set of Medic What dvd/Blu but they just aren't readily available in the states.
I DO have a full set of the NuWhat series' (although, I had ordered series 1-6 as a bulk order from a seller on Amaz0n and some of the box sets are OBVIOUSLY bootlegs - with misspelled episode names and questionable quality encoding).
;-(

As for Exclusives... they are the BANE of my existence.
As a comic buyer, SO many Variant Covers and items are exclusive to one store or another.
I often find myself waiting YEARS, until the prices of some ridiculous exclusive goes down to a more manageable price.

Movies are a problem also (luckily, I don't buy dvds or blu rays with the exception of some classics from the discount bin, a few times a year, at most).
I, however, due to exclusives, did just have to get several editions of the Doctor Strange movie because I'm a collector of the character.

I have so little "extra" cash ("extra" if I go without some other kind of general necessity) that as a collector, I am glad that I am only interested in one or two character/properties (and even those are being priced away from me. Doctor Strange used to be easy to collect, as there was so little merch for him. But now... alas...)

Anyway, I'd love to get a full set of Classic MEDIC WHAT vids (and LC audios - tho I think I NEED to buy the 4th Battle Medic), as well as some more action figures.
(I really need some Peppots, RoboGuys, maybe a Sulking Cherub or three... to be menaces for my Medic figures.)

I think I'll check the couch cushions for a spare dollar and play the lottery.
Winning THAT may be my only chance.
;-)

Ouch, that's harsh...! Also reminds me of this one guy I'm no longer friends with. He was the only person I knew who unironically loved that reboot of the "Bionic Woman" that Ryan starred in, and even said if he ever met her in person, he'd have her sign his DVD box set. On a side note, the only problem I have with those versions of the Cyborgs, is that they have human hands - to illustrate: using a sledge-hammer with bones attached to the end - the bones get smashed. Whereas a sledge-hammer with a metal end - metal end intact, causes great damage. It's no use having great strength when all you have at the end is fragile human tissue. That's just one thing that's always bothered me.

It's like those weight-lifters who lift great weights. There will always be some who end up with limbs broken when forcing a great weight. Our bones, ligaments, tendons can only bear so much force.

Still great to see them back though!

Watching the original "Xth Orbital-Sphere", it looked as though the borg-men had bare human hands, but the set pic of CapLD makes it look like they have rubber dish-washing gloves.
SO, perhaps the hand SHAPE is human, but inside the glove is a mess of metal and cable?

Only the free ST in remembrance (eternally dropping) stood out to me and elicited some emotion. Other than that, only duum3's Away Companions I thought was good but the rest of duum3 was a bit boring.

Yeah, I completely get where you're coming from. Apart from everything written by the ever-reliable John Dorney, there haven't been many BFs of late that have stuck in my memory. I really enjoyed 'The Ravelli Conspiracy' though - I thought it got the whole Dennis Spooner historical comedy thing down perfectly; and Peter Purves always gives 110%. It's probably the only 'Early Adventure' I'd recommend, really wish they hadn't scrapped the Companion Chronicles - some of them were the best plays BF have ever done

The CCs hold up surprisingly well. But i wonder if thats because of the format, or due to the fact that when they started --bf wasn't producing much beyond that, the main range, and maybe one other thing per month. (as memory serves).
And TY for the suggestions The_Jez & foru1.

the ones that stick out for me are pretty much the whole of the Early Adv range along with the CC's and surprisingly the 5th medic and trio.... the voice of Tree-lor has grown on me...but the main range apart from those 5th medic have left me flat.... ol' six needs an Evelyn type injection and 7 needs a Hex

I think one of the reasons LC's stuff has slipped in quality over the last couple of years is partly due to too much quantity and not enough talent to go round. They essentially rely on a small core group of writers to write everything over all their ranges. When you have that big of a workload spread over such a small group obviously something's going to give.

That's what I reckon too, despite what they or Brick Niggs says. Though I am preferring it over the TV medic of late.

Not to bash Han Solo, but what is so compelling about him that makes him a "great sci-fi character"?
No snark. Just curious.
If you want to keep it in Star Wars, then isn't Darth Vader more interesting?

Or is this more of a "Sci-fi Protagonists" list?

Heck, I'd put Yoda over Han.

Vader came in 4th.
Superman 5th
James T kirk 6th
Terminator 7th
Ripley 8th
Spiderman 9th
Leia 10th

It's fairly random list.

Yoda came 30th In front of Deckard but behind Nick Fury.

Seems to cover a lot of various characters.

Lol, Even Melanie Bush gets a mention albeit in 2nd place, stuck between Jar Jar Binks and Neelix as characters we love to hate.

Thankfully those large conclusion people saved her and made her more interesting. :)

The trouble seems to be that sci-fi now covers such a broad selection, many of which might technically belong but perhaps shouldn't. Characters like The Joker & Frankenstein's Monster are, I think, a bit of a stretch.

Of course, it's all just a matter of opinion.
Of course, my opinion is always the right one.

Yeah, that's not bad. Pity Scorpy's not listed, though. He's one of the few sci-fi villains who I feel is just as ruthless and unrelenting as he is clever, and that the motivations he has for doing what he does to achieve his goals and his methods for moving towards them don't diminish that in the slightest.

I'd love it, too. I mean, Claudia Black already has LC experience doing the Stargate audios (which are now sadly defunct, as MGM decided to take back the rights, as they didn't sell that well). Oh, and Virginia Hey does as well, having done a Scarfed Medic audio awhile back. Sadly, they'd have to either get a sound-alike or find some way to incapacitate Rygel for their stories as Jonathan Hardy went off to the hallowed realm a couple years ago. In fact, I remember he used to have a personal Facebook page where fans could add him and ask him questions, and he was even gracious enough to wish me a happy birthday! Wish I could've met him in person to thank him for that. Alas...

I haven't had the privilege to meet her yet, but I did get to ask her some questions on her Facebook fan page when she had an open Q&A. She thought it was so sweet that her character's death in Farscape reduced me to tears. EM,

I had a stroke in the vision/balance center of my brain which I have nearly completely recovered from (I still need glasses, and I had never needed glasses before the stroke). For a few weeks following my stroke, I also could not stop the "spinning". Even closing my eyes gave me no relief. The only way I discovered to stop the sensation of spinning, was to have a solid wall directly to my right, and keeping my head facing forward, but turning my eyes as far as I could to the right (the wall). By doing that I was able to walk around the house without nearly falling down from the dizziness. In my case, the dizziness stopped around 15 days after coming home. Perhaps you will have relief even quicker. Keep a positive attitude (which you always seem to have in your posts)!!

Wishing you a quick and speedy recovery!

Wishing you a quick and speedy recovery!

It was really bad, post op. I kept my eyes closed, and kept very still to try and cope. Sadly, I can't do that everyday! I have found it a bit easier in the confines of home - that way I have the walls to my immediate left, or right, to stumble into. Like you, I gather it will improve in the next couple of weeks (I'm on a couple more medications for that duration - as if I needed more!). There are vestibular exercises to do as well.

Such a shame to feel drunk, but not to be drunk - it feels better with the alcohol! Actually, I can't drink anymore these days, not with the medication I'm on. That, and it makes me feel sick. I can't win!

Thank you everybody for the well-wishes, I does mean a lot to me.

Ps, I think I've been in hospital too much. One of the girls, in the hospital I stayed, recognised me from another hospital I visited frequently a few years ago.

It's a huge issue unfortunately given the reactions of "why should we care?????" in lots of place. You should care because people are killing themselves rather than accept they are gay. People are still getting beaten up or thrown out the family home. People still cannot walk down the streets hand-in-hand with their spouse. We don't live in this accepting utopia we all like to think we do. And people in the US are finding it's about to get a lot worse with Pence in control.

As long as there are still reactions like "box ticking", "not on a kids show", "why don't they make her disabled and have the complete set", "PC liberal agenda", etc, then there is still work to do.

Sorry to get heavy but I think we all need to let LGBT people have this little moment of victory.

Personally I love sex thrust in my face, and ad nauseum is just fine with me.

However, when it came to Who, I don't think Uncle Russ delivered as much sex-in-your-face as many of us would have liked. Instead he made every effort to normalise the pantheon of sexuality, making it everyday, humdrum and homely, thereby creating pan-sexual TV that you could watch with your Nanna.

i don't think RTD put it in the face as much as people seemed to think he did.... i think he did a vast spectrum of sexuality and culture without making i9t an issue. [see the Captain Jack Kiss] and when there were gay character it was very subdued . RTD hate again with justification.

this is very deja vu.... in term of what happened at he end of the RTD run there seems to be this massive hate toward anything RTD did and this percieved agenda..... and the lord saviour was coming in to save the show in the form of the "grand moff"

flash forward now the bad guy is Moffat

Cheers Robot D84.

I'm happy about the LGBT representation but I'm on the side that thinks RTD went in your face with sex at the expense of other character considerations and plot. Not so much in the main medic series but particularly in the spinoff. All the screwing around in season 1 by just about all the characters put me right off so much so that I never revisited that show when they apparently toned it down season 2 onwards. That's probably my loss.

I just want it to be simply one aspect of the character, not their Be all and end all.

I think that this just another example of there having previously been so little love and sex in sci-fi series that ANY seemed like it was just everywhere.
After all, how much sex was there really in that first season of the spinoff? Obviously, there was the sex monster episode. But, really, what else was there? All of the characters were single. We had Ianto upset over the Cyberization and death of his former girlfriend (and no sex, although I guess some people saw it as sex becuase of her admittedly ridiculous sexy cyber-outfit.) There was the finale where Jack meets his namesake. But there was actually no sex, and the romance was the entire point of that story, but it was also in service of the whole time travel story, too. And what else?

If we were talking about any other show on television, devoting two episodes in a season to the love lives of the characters (and in all cases in service to the larger sci-fi plots of those episodes) would seem like nothing. But because it was Doctor Who, which had been pretty much emotionally sterile until RTD came along, it's all some people see in it.

Owen essentially date raping people put me off the character forever.

Yeah this is one of the things that put me off. It made me think why do I want to spend my time watching such unlikeable characters?

Let me be clear, I don't have a problem seeing sex and love in my favourite shows. Girls is one of my favorite shows and that has a quite graphic representation of sex and love and I quite like RTD's other shows. But the initial representation of it in the medic spinoff made the characters seem unappealing to me. If felt like there was a rush to be edgy which wasn't altogether necessary. Kind of like how I feel like the virgin medic NAs, not really my cup of tea.

Having said all that I have thought about revisiting the spinoff at some point. Maybe just watch CoE or the US season (although I've heard mixed things about that final season).

My biggest problem in the first two series of that spin-off was that it was trying to be adult but came across as a kids version of what being adult is all about. It was just plain immature. Though, the second series was a big improvement over the first.

The last series wasn't as bad as some people think it is (in my mind). I think it's just that it is so depressing. I found that about CoE too. If I were to watch both of them again I think I'd have to watch some happy stuff, regularly, to see me through.

That's just my opinion. Of course you are all entitled to your opinion, so please don't abuse me for voicing what I think.

That said, I do hold out hope for the new series of the Medic, it sounds pretty good, for a change.

The first series of the spin off was simply finding it feet, also you have to place it in the context of Jacks time line... He was a little grumpy and moody, not the fun jack from series one of the medic, he was depressed I suppose and surrounded himself with a bunch of damaged arses, whilst waiting over a hundred years for the medic to come back. At the end of the first series he runs off to finally be with the medic again. He returns to series two, now that the writers have also found their groove and after kicking major pepperpot butt, a much happier and person almost knowing who he is and what his role is. This second series is much better and also as it goes on, you actually find out the arses around him ACTUALLY have reasons to be the way they are, and are in truth emotionally damaged heroes and not arses at all. It does not justify certain characters actions as such, but you feel you understand and actually have a degree of empathy with them.
After the wholesale slaughter of the finale of season two we go into CoE.... yes its dark, the team are in a dark place, however it is one of the finest pieces of dark adult sci fi EVER filmed for television... a pure classic a yet to be bettered. The events of which leaves Jack in an even darker place at the end of the series than he was at the start, having to suffer even more loss of an even more personal nature.

As for the 4th series, yes it is different, but I guess that is the American influence on it... it has some great ideas and a dark and gripping story line. The real issue with it, is that it is simply too long and as a result has too much padding. Had this been 5 or maybe 6 episodes, with the filler trimmed away, this could have been as good as CoE, but it plods along rather than gallops. I feel this US season should have had two 5 part story arcs, rather than dragging it out over 10. IMHO this is why this season "failed". great idea, great story but too long in its execution.

All in all I enjoyed the show in all its formats and would welcome its return, one final point I will raise. I know many medic fans that don't like it, because its different, its too dark, its this, its that... bottom line, no its not like the parent show, it was never supposed to be. I also know people who like the spin off that didn't like the parent show and watched it in isolation from the medic, and enjoyed it for what it was, and that is a well made slice of dark adult fantasy.

Just shows that you cant please all of the people all of the time!

Funny that you should mention the length of the fourth series as that's another thing I felt too - it's exactly as you say, it should have been five or six episodes. The setting up would take two episodes, with the remainder dealing with and coming to the resolution. I think the dragging was what made it just so relentlessly depressing as there were so many episodes that had that focused on that aspect. I still bought it all on DVD.

My favourite series has to be the second one, the only one, ironically, I don't have on DVD...yet.

All of this sums up how I feel about Jack's spinoff and then some. Well said.

However, I have to throw in my 2 cents (or 2 pence for you Brits) for the kid-oriented Sarah Jane spin-off. I personally love it, despite being old as the hills compared to most kids who were probably watching it at the time. Also in spite of them using the Slitheen a lot, but that's another issue altogether. There are some episodes of it that deal with some serious issues that the kids have which I feel like a lot of other kid's shows would just briefly gloss over it with a throwaway line and then never bring up again unless the plot drags it out for whatever hackneyed reason. I know of many kid's shows here in the States that are tremendously guilty of that, so if there are any in the UK that are also guilty of it, let me know. The other thing I love about it is how much it really fleshes out Sarah Jane as a character and how much she takes to leading these kids to fight aliens.

However, my favorite thing about the show was watching the character growth of Sarah Jane's adopted son Luke. The way he's so smart, yet also literal to the point where he initially has to work to understand the simplest joke at the start of the series almost reminded me of my own personal struggles with understanding people due my Asperger's. Granted, I'm aware that I could be projecting a bit of myself onto the character, and that it probably wasn't RTD's intent behind him as a character at all. But regardless, if I ever meet RTD, I want to give him a big hug for even accidentally creating a character in the Whoniverse (I know some people don't like that term. Deal.) that Aspies like myself could relate to.

[Standing in corner. Turns head to face away from the wall. Expression of penitence on face. Big, sad Keane eyes...]

"I... I've not watched the Sarah spin off. I WANT to. I just haven't yet. I'm a baaaad whovian."

Seriously, though. I LOVE SJS, and keep meaning to snag some eps (they must exist online somewhere, so I'm sure I'll find them), but haven't done so yet. The "children's show" aspect does kind of hold me off a bit, but that's primarily because kid's shows here in the states are SO dumbed down, it's painful. I'm imagining that, based on reviews by fellows such as yourselves, that that isn't an issue.

As for Burning Jack, I had started watching the first season, but felt it was just a bit racy for watching with my wife (whose tv tastes are very pedestrian; cop dramas and the like), so I'll have to secure time to view it alone.

If it's any consolation, I didn't start watching the Sarah Jane spin-off til Ten showed up in an ep where SJ was gonna get married, which is in it's 3rd season. Also, you're not the first to be held off by the "children's show" aspect of it. My older brothers (who are also Whovians, however I'm the only one of the 3 of us who rabidly listens to LC's output) were initially put off by it, too. You're so right about kid's shows here in the States being so dumbed down. Especially nowadays... It makes me want to award a Purple Heart to the teachers have to work extra hard to get them to pay attention in school because of it. It also makes me worry what's gonna happen when my nephew starts going to school and being more aware of the world beyond his family. He just turned 2 years old last month, which doesn't help...

Oh, I love the SJA's, even though I'm not the demographic the show was aimed at. I was lucky enough to win the DVD set of the first series, and so I collected the rest as they were released. I quite agree with GoldenTalesGeek also. I love it that it doesn't talk down to children, like a lot of kids shows do. Watch it - I'm sure you'll love it.

Hmm. It's probably something I'll have to give a look to. Wasn't that really interested in this but if people are recommending I might try and catch up.

OK, Not that I needed much convincing, but I guess I'll give SJS a go.

(Zero Room double' entendre somewhat intended.
... Sorry. She was MY era companion, tho I thought she only got more attractive with each subsequent return. ie; "R0b0tD0g & Co.", & "Reuni0n".)

Also looking for Chuck P o l l a r d Series 2 if anyone can help...

haven't managed to find it myself yet. still looking.

Although. I remember listening to the first series but cannot remember a single thing about it, so obviously didn't stick in my mind.
Was it any good?

IMHO, it felt like a huge pilot. Not really bad, but far from good. Essentially, it was Nick Briggs telling us "Hey, look at how potentially Charlotte can be a main character ! And look at this new guy who is so obviously going to be his new companion !".
The baddie was kind of interesting, though.

I like Chuck. Well, I like her voice.
Her character was always too "But Medic, I luv yu!! Waah!"

Still, I could listen to her act all day.

The 1st box set was ok.
I remember some of it, but I'll have to give a re-listen (or read a wiki to jar my memory about the story beats).

One thing about Chuck is that her story being almost "Clara-esque" (BEFORE Clara's):
- Out of time / Paradoxical girl
- Dead / Not Dead?
- Experiences more than one Medic - out of sequence.
- "Dies" again, but really zooms off to her own adventures as her own "Ms. Medic".

I'll give the new one a listen, tho. Gladly.
Because, I could listen to her all day, and I hope they get to a more interesting place with the character.

ON a second track... have you heard about what they have planned for "THE MAZTRR" on the MEDIC WHAT show?

John Simm is returning as the MAZTRR?
Supposedly for a TWO MAZTRRS story on the show alongside MS. MZTERR.

I also think SJA was exceptional and that a big part of that was not writing down to it's audience. Truly enjoyable, fun, and wprth your while.
