I came to jump with joy at the announcement of a return to the UB Medic but I see I was too late!

SO INSTEAD, my opinion on some recent stuff; <<-- Warning -- >> It's not as critical as I usually am.

The adventure of the Robot Butler(s) <-- Best monthly in a LONG time. But I love robot stories.
W@r Medic 2 <-- These continue to be really great. The theme continues to be my favorite of the entire series.
BurningTrees Finale <-- Any story where I can come away from it with an idea inspired by it but which is so much a polar opposite is a great one. Plus, confession, Gwen was always the reason I tuned into the show. Sorry Cap'n.
Medic4 <-- I will admit, I have loved these nearly unconditionally for a while. My great Fear when I listen to any of them is that it might be The Last due to His health/age. But, hell, he sounds more excited and energized in every release.

So, yeah. Pretty good last month or so. It has been a rare one where I didn't find something that bothered the heck out of me.

Yeah, last month's monthly was the best in quite some time, though I've felt that the whole series has been quite solid in the past 1.5 years or so. Maybe no classics, but no real clunkers either.
The whole TW series have been really solid so far. I particularly liked the Cap'n's one last month. Too bad our leading lady is done with this role, though. She's always been the heart of the group.
Honestly, I've found a lot of 4's stories to be rather mediocre, with a few bright spots. But this year is starting stronger than usual.
I'm definitely excited about the news about the (original!) archaeologist's next set!
I'm definitely looking forward to 8's new set. The last one was quite strong, and the new villain was great.

Might anyone be willing to remedy this deprivation, especially the two starring the gentleman in question?

I've held off on them as well, because I wanted to get caught up on the REAL Medic audios - but I'm not only caught up, but have been gorging on spin-off material as well!
I'll be done with the Victorian Gentlemen this week, and have already moved the Medic Unwound files to be next in queue.

Yeah, sort of.
The actor who played @v0n wrote a trilogy of books and they've (2 out so far) been recorded by him as @udi0b00ks....
Luc!f3r series on their site under 'blokes' @udi0b00ks.

There is a good book (in my opinion, I enjoyed it) that has nothing to do with LC, called "Aft3rmath" written by T0ny Attw00d (who wrote a "C0mpani0ns of the Medic" back in the 80s called Turl0ugh & the Earthl!nk D!ll3mma). I've got scans of it somewhere if you'd like to read it.

The first book was okay, in my opinion. The second one just left me numb and I haven't even finished the third one. It's that bad. The editor really needed to come down on him, but I guess LC was too worried about losing the actor and just let him type (I hesitate to call it writing).

Thanks. I'm not a great artist, I know I need a lot of practice. You wouldn't think something that is mostly straight lines would be all that hard to get right, though. Turned out to be much harder than it looked. :/

I used to do a lot of drawing when I was younger. I'm much better with pencil drawing though and find it harder using colour.

I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum here, in that I'm a full-time illustrator (and now doing 3D design and surface design) - BUT it is not the same creative stuff that I used to do years ago (whether for myself or for when I worked writing/drawing comic books, storyboards and other cool stuff).

I STILL don't consider myself as actually "drawing" every day (and these days it's more with the Wacom graphics tablet than any actual pen on paper).
:-(
And worse still, a lot of it is "design-by-committee" so in many cases, I'm just the monkey - not the organ grinder.

But, I wouldn't mind it if I had more time to devote to my WRITING.
My incoherent ramblings here nothwithstanding, I'm a far better writer (or at least *I* think so).

Still, after years out of my field and either working with Special Needs children (all of whom were great) and/or driving a school bus for a few years - or at closest - working in a Pre-press and print shop... I'm just happy to be doing what I'm doing.

Now, if only it PAID better (or I had to spend less on my commute and/or "cheap" motel room - I work 2 states away from my home).
Still, the 2.5 to 4 hour drive (depending on the day and destination) allows me to digest a big chunk of LC - and for that (and my sanity) - I thank you all!

I am not a fan of Nu[Medic]. Ten's alright, for the most part, but the show has lost something since it became trs chic to be into the Medic. Since reflecting one weekend after watching one of the bonus features ("The Wilderness Years") on the 8th Medic's TV Movie DVD, I came to the conclusion that the series' mythology was far more original, more inventive than anything I have seen since.

11 was something of a cosmic twat towards the end of his run. 9 rubbed me the wrong way, wasn't around long enough to get a feel for his character. And 12? I like PC the actor, but the grumpy duffer portrayal of the Medic is not something I am a fan. 6 was portrayed as such, and it wasn't until LC's audios that I felt the character got a more fair treatment. Perhaps some day I will feel the same about 12.

4 will always be my Medic, as he was the first one I was exposed to back in 1978. Since that time, I have found 8 (via the EDAs, both audio and the novels) to be the Medic I most admire. Getting to meet PMG the year before I left NJ was a big moment for me.

Okay, I've said enough. At this point, I imagine I've probably alienated most of the forum. I can't apologize, because I didn't really say anything untoward. In any case, all I do is this: *HUGS*

Thanks for all the great uploads!

Been really enjoying the Blokes 6+1 audios lately- especially the Chronicles. I'm curious to try the unofficial Koldar City Spinoffs or the Logic of Umpire. Are they worth it? If so does anyone have them to share?

Fair enough.
Your thoughts and feeling are your own and no one can or should try to abuse you for them.

While 4 (also MY Medic, watched via PBS in the late 70's-early 80's), 2 and 8 are my faves (in that order) but for different reasons, I will confess that 11 comes in fourth for me (but I understand the divisive nature of his casting/portrayal).

No worries.
*PEACE*

Thanks for being cool and understanding. There was an issue in here a couple months back, based on a comment (not a mean comment, mind you), that resulted in the Moderator stepping in and closing things down. Glad to know the mind-set has changed (for the better) since that episode. Here, have a jelly baby, then, hmmm?

Dang, man! That's sad news! I had never heard of him prior to you posting that. Seemed quite talented - I liked his voice!

He deserved success outside of Oz. Great singer and great actor.

On unrelated news I've just come back from an ENT appointment at the hospital. Seems like they can help get my hearing back with a cochlear implant. Don't know when that'll happen. Hopefully it's soon.

Yes, I agree. We all have different opinions and likes and dislikes. I've actually found I'm more excited for the audios these days than the TV series.

BTW, I really love The Captive. I think Brick Niggs has done a great job.

As much as I love Mr. Blessed and his boisterousness, I'm not sure I want him playing the Medic. Then again, the more I listen to the War Medic audios, the more I love John Hurt in the role and just how awesomely bold it was of Moffat to retcon him in like that. So it wouldn't be the first time a Medic casting came out of left field. We'll just have to see what happens...

if you look at the era of Davison many of those storys... he has little effect on the outcome or he can't do anything to prevent certain things from happening. Much of the time he is caught up in the events and he and his companions have to escape.

Yeah that isn't an untruth. Still I think this one may be my front runner for least liked of the entire series.

I guess its an interesting dichotomy that I have been thinking over the last 2 years that its a shame that the Medic hasnt really met any aliens not out looking to conquer the Earth for no reason while stories like this, which are based on fact, are just humans behaving like humans do and easily fulfilling the role of the generic alien invader with no issue.

Established history is necessary for the established present to keep shape.

Looking over the wiki, stuff like this eventually (15 years later) lead to improved working conditions and 2 ministerial seats in Manchester. Although the wiki says that the government tried to be a dick about it on the way. First thing they did was try to silence the newspapers and control the journalists to make their side of the story was the only side being told, and throw a lot of people in jail, a few of who were eventually elected to seats in parliament.

that seemed to be the case with the 1st medic historical s there was either something the Medic was intrinsically involved or just swept up in events desperately trying to escape....

even some of the sci-fi ones the LC does for the 5th the tone has been either the medic and company cause the problem [Beauty Creatures] or the opposite nothing he does can fix things ... the character of the 5th medic works perfectly for these stories.... especially with us knowing how he ultimately comes to the end of his own regeneration in much the same way. desperately trying to get out of a local war while trying to save himself and Ms Brown.
I find stories like these work well in the midst of the "medic fixes everything and there is a happy ending" plots

That isn't to say every story needs to be like this but there needs to be these types of stories so the impact of "just this once everybody lives" comes later

I was reading the nostalgia-filled 20th anniversary TV FILM issue of MEDIC MONTHLY and saw a mini review of a CCB AUDI0 book of the FIRST MEDIC story:
"Wicked Hag what has a wart on her nose - Elmer J. Fudd's (ostensibly between Rabbit & Duck seasons)"

*Also I see what sounds like a good audio of
DEATH TO THE PLUNGER-POTS
read by the famous and funny 4th Medic impersonator

Might anyone have these?
And if so... might I get a link(s)?

Apologies if they have yet to be posted - I'm not trying to rush things, but
In all honesty, with the clandestine methods of title obfuscation (as seen above) - either COULD have been listed already and I may have missed them; and if so, mea culpa.

Thank you.

Was anyone else disappointed with the recent 8th Medic boxed set? I thought the first three stories were fab and damned fine writing! Then came the final story, featuring Mrs. Medic, and after 30 minutes, I was thoroughly bored and didn't really care about the ending! I love LC, but, and I have said this before, I am starting to wonder if they are churning out TOO MUCH Medic audio drama, defeating the old idea of "Quality > Quantity"!

As we've seen, they have a great many other series within their grasp, why not focus on them? I've seen posts from others on another Medic forum I am on, and it would seem I am not alone in this belief. I was considering writing LC, expressing my concern for them as a company, politely suggesting they slow down on the Medic output.

What does everyone else think about that idea?

The biggest problem with that story is that RS and The D can't meet. Now replace RS with Benny Summer and the story would have worked better and the two could have solved the issue together.

I've been saying exactly the same thing for a couple of years now, but writing a letter would do absolutely nothing. As long as the stories sell, they will keep churning them out. It all comes down to the bottom line....

I don't object to the amount they're recording, especially given that some of the classic Medics may have to retire even from audio adventures at some point in the semi-near future (though the Victorian Gentlemen are doing just fine!). Also, their normal batting average is arguably no worse than any of the television seasons, classic or Nu, every one of which had a certain percentage of below-average episodes and only comparatively few instant classics.

That said, what I *would* like to see is for LC to expand their stable of script writers, some of whom may be spread too thin covering all the new series and ranges.

By the way I've just noticed, on VK, that someone had uploaded SE29 11th Medic Vol. 3 (the first half of S06) magazine. That's the Special Edition Medic magazine that they release every year, covering that years TV output)

It's not the best of scans, but better than nothing.

I actually find the story a bit more fascinating with the fact that RS and Eight can't meet. Yeah, it's a manipulative bit of contrived tension at times, but for me it works a helluva lot better than having an overused running gag where whenever RS meets a classic Medic she has to wipe their memory of the encounter to keep the Web of Time intact, much like Ms. Pollard had to do with Six in the monthlies. Hell, Eight's been given amnesia so much across all media since his debut in the 1996 TV Movie, it in of itself is a running gag. It's a miracle that incarnation can even function mentally.

As did I, but I also feel like he was also thinking the fourth story was lacking because Eight and Melody Pond never got to properly interact with one another. Which is why I decided to tackle that bit in my rebuttal as opposed to the frankly bizarre correlation he made, which I honestly couldn't find an adequate rebuttal for. I've been expending so much brain power just making sure I do my paying job properly, it's a miracle I can even play my video games or record them for my YouTube channel on my days off.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from.

Their previous 'encounter' worked far better than this one. This one really just felt like it was initially written for Benny and then re-tooled for RS, and I'd still say the story would have worked better with BS rather than RS.

I think what they need to do for 8+RS stories is use 'The One About The Stolen Leopard Jewel' as a template where you hear both sides of the story independently. Or, and this could be fun, one like 'Flap-Flip' where could listen to both stories in either order and it would still make sense.

I hope future Benny stories won't remain in the Unbound universe (although I'm looking forward to that one) now that RS has crossed over to LC, I'd also like to see some LC creations cross over into the Tv stories, I hope the 8th medic opened up that possibility when he name checked his companions in the anniversary show.

Wouldn't surprise me if his next run of post DimPeeps stories are set earlier in his time-line when he's got more of a spring in his step. Maybe more Shelly ones, perhaps?

Wasn't there something last year that hinted that his movie companions could be available to use soon, or am I imagining that?

i think this year the options run out -- and Ms Ashbrook said that she and Tso are first in line as soon as the right are available. As Ye , Daphne, and Paul are great friends as well. [might even be a way to extract the Roberts master out of the TARDybox and regenerate into the AM version]

Thanks for confirming that.

As for getting Roberts to do a 'hand-over' ... I think he'd probably be up for it. Not that he's got any particular tie to the franchise like the rest of the cast (has he ever done a related convention?) but, well, just look at his IMDB page. The man never stops working. The right bit of smooth talking to ease that they couldn't pay him that much may well be enough to tempt him into a studio for a day to record something.

We can but keep our fingers crossed.

yes it would be quite nice to see a series of boxes that followed up on the movie cast revisit them and them move on....the 8th medic adventures are so rich and varied from the edwardian adventuress ; the the divergent arc ; lucie era ; dim peepers ; and miss shelly as well as the current doom era is is amazing how much that medic has gone though [and we still have the time war to come!]

Well the March out of March is almost into April:::::

Time to look at what is coming up:

BBC Books: Past Doctor - 3rd Medic A Moral Tale read by Dan everyone's favorite Sontaran
Bullseye Book Reading -- The Metal Men invade the Earth read by David Spawn of the 2nd medic with help from Nick of the Pepperpots
12th Medic -- has a memory of the last season to be released

in the LC zone lots of great stuff....

Non Medic Related : Hawks of terror volume 2 [8 episodes 1 box]
Seven of Blokes Chronocals #12 [3 stories 1 box]
The Non Marvelous Avengers - The "We're needed" variety..adapted from the comics .... [4 stories 1 box]

Medic Spinoff -- Burning Trees --now with added Tosh!
The Victorian Gentlemen #11 [4 stories 1 box] -- in this box we have added 6th medic and kicking of alot of releases with The Meester

Medics : Medic Monthly - 5th medic --- is compelled to obey the Meester
4th Medic - the time lady and the Tin dog continue with a Dead Leg-ACe
Adapted Virgins : Into the Shade of Night with the 7th medic Ace and Susan
Short Hops : the month will close yet again this time with the return of Lucie

looks like a big month with representation of all the LC classic medics

Have a great month and remember not to be a greedy gastropod...... and be sure to make sure the Spark in your life isn't one that is a flame!

Just watched the latest main range story, and WOW! That was the best main range release in a LONG time. Some here have complained that the Medic and crew didn't change anything. But I thought that was the whole point. It threw the cast into historical events that they couldn't change. But beyond the usual historical plotlines of mainly just trying to escape from a bad situation, the story draws the crew -- and the listeners -- emotionally into the lives of these characters who are also caught up in the horrors of history. This was a true historical in the finest Hartnell-era tradition, but with a much more modern emotional resonance. And I can't think of a better crew for this story to work with. Teegin's argumentative nature sets her adds with everyone around her, but also allows her to see everything wrong with this culture. Neesa's soft-spoken gentleness and compassion allows her to bond with someone from the time in a way that affects her strongly. And this Medic (of the "there should have been a better way", although somewhat later in his timeline), but also a purveyor of the kind of aristocracy of this time (as Teegin happily points out) is the perfect one to be thrust into this story.

If I had any complaint about the story, it's the odd use of cliffhangers, mostly with the medic suddenly discovering where they are. The one where he reveals the title of the story is a particularly odd one. After all, are any listeners really going to be surprised that they're where and when the title of the story says they are?

Side question for the Brits among you: is this a very well-known piece of British history? Is it something that most Brits would know much about? Just wondering, since I'd never heard about it, thought I'm American.

It depends on where you went to school, and how radical/socialist/working class your history teacher was. It did crop up outside the curriculum in my school but I suspect the toffs who run the country were spared the nasty reality of capitalism gone mad.
The reasons I was taught for the riots, which weren't really spelt out in the drama, was that the cotton industry in the north of England expanded so rapidly after the 1800s that the market got over-supplied, so in order to keep making a profit the mill owners lengthened working hours and cut wages below the level where rents could be paid and bread put on the tables. Mills also closed down, throwing more and more desperate people into the labour pool, forcing wages down further and further.
A very bad time.

Always good to learn something!

Oh, what I'd give for a brand new 4 part TV story with that SIDRAT team, looking exactly as they did in 1983. Somebody invent time travel please and then post a link to it via RWQ, thanks.

It's a testament to how vivid this story is that you naturally said you watched it rather than listened to it :)

Good point!
Also, on the subject of the recent main ranges, I've really enjoyed all three of this trilogy. I think the crew works best with just two companions. Both of them really had a chance to shine in all three stories. But beyond that, all three stories were quite strong, IMHO.

I think that in general, this show works better with 1 or 2, rather than 3 companions, with the notable exceptions of the first crew and the 3rd medic era (though you could debate whether the soldiers should count at companions.) It's hard enough to find good storylines for 1 or 2 of them! Also, with the trio of companions that BF has been using for 5, we've had the odd contrivance of the Trakenite being older, then de-aged, which was really forced. Hopefully, from this point on, we'll get mostly the Aussie with either the Trakenite or the guy from Trion. for teams with 5.

I have that same reaction to too many companions. The only time i didn't mind it is when it was the first quartet ...... it is interesting that for the majority of the early years you have 2-3 companions --and it wasn't until you have Miss Grunt that you saw a length of time where you had 1 Medic 1 companion.
Even the 11th medic ended up with 2 companions for most of his era.

One advantage to two companions rather than one is that they can interact with and understand one another in ways that aren't possible for them with the Medic. Also, they can have different abilities and reactions.

It's also true that audio drama has different rules: on screen, characters who aren't speaking are still visible when they move, react, etc., but in audio characters have to speak or be spoken to somewhat regularly to remain present in the listener's mind. The script has to be written to keep all the characters in a scene "active." The more characters you have, the trickier this can become. This has an impact on the optimal number of companions for audio adventures.

I can now understand the genuine joyful response that followed the announcement of Bennie Anthro-medic-friend joining the Un80und Medic adventures.
I finally listened to them all and found them to be utterly delightful!

Is it just me, or does the erzatz FIRST Medic actor (who seemingly WAS asked to be THE first [and Second] TV Medic) does an excellent version of him? I think he may be better than either "Chetterton" or "Stevven" in his delivery.

Of course, the real gem is Wavid Darner! (tho it was nice to hear the Brig's voice again).

---

I've now plowed through the Excel!$ saga, and will next alternate between !r!s Wyld3-tym3 and the original Benn!e adventures, in anticipation of more of her.

Li$@ B0ww3rm@n is an absolute treasure (actor, director and even the voice of 3llie for the Victorian Gents!). Her VO of the novel of "Hum@n N@ture" and everything else she's done for LC have been captivating.

If medic Humor is up your alley… I'm not sure if it's posted here yet but the latest Medic Monthly (498) has a nice shout out to the parody Creator of the pepperpots "workout" video I did as part of a comedy show for the last Medic Themed Convention here in Los Angeles back in February. Pretty cool! Not sure if a direct link is allowed but it's searchable on youtube as Sweatin on Skero - And there's sidebar links to a number of other videos/sketches we did too.

Coolest. Thanks! I kinda missed it because I've been so busy with my job. They've been making me work some crazy hours the last few weeks. I sometimes wish I was still volunteering at the library so I could listen to more LC stuff. But I'm still glad I have the money, since I got the 1st and 4th Medic Missing Tales box sets when they were on sale last week. Just the digital versions, though. :)

I've been coming to this thread for about 4 years and it's really hard for me to find... anything. At all. You know, you could try making the code-language simpler and more consistent. Like using Pig Latin. That way searching would be a cinch and the ground rules would be consistent, even with words starting with vowels, ignoring the complexity of those endings. Just move the first letter to the end and and ay. I don't want to tell you how to do things, but. This has caused me years of suffering with inane code-talk into long hours of the night.

More to point, I misplaced my copy of Hteay Astlay Dventureaay staring Hetay Ixthsay Octorday. Anyone have that?
