Since LC is recasting some parts and in some cases using family members i thought of another "family" member that would be perfect to use.. for Jen Backson along with Pol and the scotsman and the 2nd medic.....

isn't Peter Craze still around and he is an alumni of the show having appeared in 3 stories...[ Open Area on Display to the Public ; Conflict Tournaments; and Bad Dreams for Adam and Eve]

Now I'm 15 minutes into Hiest Siense, and I can't seem to make head or tails out of anything going on. Who are these people? Where are we? What's going on? Why should I care? LC might want to learn how use a tiny bit of exposition. Not to mention the amateurish sounding sound production. (Wasn't I just praising their production values a few posts ago?) Explosion 10 minutes in nearly blew out my eardrums! And there's so much effect on the main baddie's voice that I can only understand 2 out of the 3 words he says.

I quite liked it, actually...

In 2013, the sub special was listed as "night of the storm crow", which was the previous years special. In actuality it turned out to be "trial of the valyard". Similar occurence the year before. This year the sub special is listed as "trial..." so it stands to reason that it will be a last minute surprise as to what it actually is, just like the previous two years. Since there is a sub special listed under the new release section, I imagine we will get something.

Just finished Dork Ise 3. Where was the Doctor? Where was Molly? They shoulda just called this one "The Moster & Liv" - considering they both got more lines than our main characters.

Now I'm 15 minutes into Hiest Siense, and I can't seem to make head or tails out of anything going on. Who are these people? Where are we? What's going on? Why should I care? I do not think so. LC state that the bonus releases are ONLY available to subscribers at the time of the bonus, and that they go on sale at a later date. They released the Valeyard in December 2013 for those with a subscription at that time.

That later date has now arrived - December 2014, and they are now selling it to those who did not have a subscription in 2013.

So there will be no bonus release for subscribers at December 2014, which will disappoint all subscribers, including me.

Interestingly, they still say you get GBP5 off the cost of the CC if you have a subscription, but these are no longer made. So what do you get the discount on - old stock?.

Sorry, but that seems to be the way it is

um. Well, it looks interesting, anyway.

And I like that "sensei" could be "doctor" or ... "master". Also "teacher", of course, but that's less pertinent.

And I like that "dare" is a word in English that describes what he does, and a word in Japanese that describes (sortof) the impression people get: "who?".

Webcomic written by Mary Bell and illustrated by the Palcomix Team that presents a version of Doctor Who as it may have been conceived by Japan. In this dimension, Rassilon visited Earth in 247 BC and returned to Gallifrey with knowledge of the era's most advanced culture: the Japanese.
This is amusing.

They've said that they have stopped the subscribers' specials because they lowered the prices this year for subscriptions. Seems fair.

But they always do some sort of bonus release for X-Mas, usually a brief journey or two. In fact, on their site, in today's news, they said that there will be stories "due to be released very soon."

I've never really thought of Louise as a red head.

Recently possibly, but not during her turn as Leela.

Although, they probably stuck her in a mud bath before every episode to create the perfect effect of a savage.

In the first story, she was, and all her tribe was, it seemed painted with old teabags.

They were all almost orange like you'd expect from a bad fake tan.

A less aggressive sun and the indooriness of the Tardis, paled her up a bit.

I wondering if the less violent solar effects should have slowly changed the colour of her hair by shades?

I have yet to find the time to listen to it!

If they use their own characters, they only have to pay less to zero of their license fee.

Actually, would Moffat have to pay Large Conclusions to use Charlie on TV?

Her first boxset is Viron heavy, who suck, and 1/2 of the adventures are about what she's up to while running/hiding from the Virons which amounts to much ado about nothing... But it is still worth a listen on a lazy Sunday while polishing off a bottle of wine and a large cheese board.

I saw a picture, a cartoon of Charlie recently, and she's in pants, whadducallit: Trousers.

And I'm thinking that's not much of an Edwardian Adventuress at all!

Early 21st century really, which is all the rage in the 25th because retro is cool.

But then she was pretending to be a boy when the medic met her, she had all but flushed standards out the air head.

I suppose 1930 is reasonably modern compared to what I saw the women wearing on the Knick in 1900, and she's been travelling so long that she's gone native and forget what decency per 1930s definition of that word is.

Looks like Eve Myles Torchwood character with a different haircut to me.

As for the Charlie series being good or bad, I am more in the Nobber camp on this in that it is unnecessary. She had a fine arc with the Medic(s) and a good sendoff for her character. More is, at least in the case of the first set, much less.

Being fair, there are people that "LOVED IT" on the LC site. I cannot say I am one of them. I do like the actress, I just don't think she can really pull the weight needed as a lead in the stories they have given her if they continue to be of the quality of set one.

Lately, any time I try to DL from M3G@ lately, leads to it going to 99% and then flipping out (it tosses up an error and keeps trying to DL but the percentage fluctuates up and down as if I am giving info back and taking it again - etc...)

So how do we think the audio world has gone this year?

I ask as when asked by by a 'fair weather fan' friend "is it worth 'binge' catching up on anything" I honesty struggled for an answer. But in a good way. Balanced out, all of LC feels (nicely) run-of-the mill. There's not been a "L Miller" for the really BIG +V or a "Scaredie Cat" for the -V

For the DW range it's been decently "ordinary" here over-all.

But still better than the TV series.

I think 'The Curi0u2 !ncid3nt of the Medic in the N!ght-T!m3' is one of LC's best ever!

I don't really like the Al3x M@st3r (his voice gives me the sh!ts), but I have otherwise enjoyed the black orbs and other b0xs3ts.

The novel adaptations/new adv3ntur3s have been pretty good as well. Not to forget the 4 early ones for 1 and the savage/3+1 releases!

So, all in all, I've been pretty happy with the output. As mentioned before, I've also though the TV series has been generally excellent. PC has been brilliant IMHO.

Gotta say I've also found it a bit hit and miss.

Hate to say it, but with all of these spin-offs, it's starting to get a little diluted for me. Enjoyable as many of them are, I feel like I've moved from terrestrial TV to Sky and now with so many channels, can't find anything new I fancy watching, so end up watching repeats...

There's been a steady decline over the past couple of years, exacerbated by spreading the talent over too broader range with Knickerless Bogs cherry picking the best projects for himself.

There have been a few pleasurable nuggets among the slurry. I enjoyed the Harelip Pinchcliff box set and the new camp baldy Master. The Hurly Adventures is showing promise – a superior format to the bland books-for-the-blind approach adopted by the Chronic Chronicles – looking forward to some full cast Doctor Two action. Murky Shadows has improved also - moving away (slightly) from it's source and relying less on the geriatric (and often intoxicated) cast members who seem to record their parts from a payphone in a maximum security old folks twilight home.

Pah! I'm already old :) though probably not as old as the surviving DS cast – nobody is that old. The problem is that they LITERALLY phone their performances in, and it's evident that several of them have consumed slightly more "refreshments" than is strictly professional – Nancy B in particular.

Globally is everyone getting a Medic Marathon on Christmas day?

I suppose considering how much they are paying for a same day broadcast of the new special, that it's worth their while to trick the audience into watching a further ten hours of reruns without blinking.

I'm going with panto, The 1 Doc, as I make Christmas dinner. As for if we'll watch the TV special live honestly depends on the soporific effect of so much food and wine.

(Just as long as no-one dare enter the kitchen whilst I'm cooking. People offering to 'help' may well be offended by a whisk being used up-on their person.)

For those who were concerned about there not being a special for the subbers this year, they've just announced that they've started a new program where, they're giving away a Not Long Journey with releases 4 times a year to the subbers. They've added the stories to past releases back to the end of 2009, with a couple of holes still to be filled. Most of those were old stories given out at X-mas-time. But all four of the ones from this year, along with 4 others from the past are all new.

So, that's EIGHT new stories! As an added bonus, unlike all of the previous stories released in this format, which were all taken from the book series of the same name, all eight of these new stories are brand new, never released in any format. Also, most of them are from writers new to LC and DW! They're also continuing this format with new download only releases that we can buy starting next month, although those are actually narrated by the actors who played the assistants. (The freebies are narrated by other actors.)

For those who are or have been subbers, and want to get them for us, there's a link to the list in the news article on the site. They're avaialble to anyone who subbed to specific releases from the main range. Note that all three stories read by Hugh R*O*S*S and all five stories read by Stephen C*R*I*T*C*H*L*O*W are new.

I much prefer the original AV version. The story works much better as a period piece, plus you don't have all that Malebolgia nonsense cluttering up the story. I remember reading somewhere that Nick Briggs didn't think to much of the modern version either for exactly the same reasons.

Listened to three and a half audios today. Up to number 38 in the main range (that's the half!), along with a few scattered monthlies along the way. I'm determined to try and make a dent in the audio range. Still got Dim Peepers 3 and a few of the Victorian gents, as well as Mounter Ceasures 3 to listen to, to get up to date with those ranges. Got to try and get onto season 2 of the Lost stories range - what puts me off are the size of some of the Lost Ones.

Oh well, doing the gardening gives me a chance to listen...

All the best to everyone. Thank you for all the sharing, and for the banter and discussion on here :)

In case you weren't aware, Humble Bundle has a Big Finish audiobook bundle this week!
You can currently pick up series 1-3 of Dalek Empire and Series 1 of the Lost Stories from as little as $15, with part proceeds going to charity (you can choose the split between BF, charity and HB). There will be more added in the next week (I imagine DE series 4 at least).

Surgery cancelled until the beginning of January.

While I didn't get any Who-related gifts this year, I did get a gift of something that set me on the path to becoming a Whovian: A DVD box set of the TV series "Farscape". To elaborate: It was mid-2005, and I was becoming severely disenchanted with sci-fi shows on TV. Since 9/11, it felt like everything was being portrayed as very dour and cynical, and I was sick of it. Then my best friend showed me some of the first season of "Farscape" while at his house, and I was hooked immediately. It was what all I ever wanted: Mad stories, complex characters, crazy aliens, and most importantly: A sense of awe and wonder about the universe. Plus, having the involvement of the Jim Henson Company helped, too. If I hadn't watched that show, I don't think "Doctor Who" would've been on my radar. Although, I will say that the mythology of "Farscape" is pretty straightforward compared to "Doctor Who"... XD

Yeah, it can. But I'm talking about overly serious to the point of feeling like it's just boring to watch and that the characters are there just to be mouthpieces for the writers complaining about how much things have changed since 9/11.

And mine...

Although I'm all for a Christmas theme, like blowing up Christmas tres and badass santas, I thought that this was a little too much. Also, I thought that we had the perfect exit for little Clara, with a lot of symetry: ie. Young Clara saying goodbye to old 11 and (relatively) Young 12 saying goodbye to old Clara. I got pretty sick of all this "dream within a dream" crap near the end. I am glad to see that Clara is here, i think that Jenna is a great actriz and easy on the eyes which makes up for the not-so-good stories we sometimes get, and I'm glad we finally "humanized" the medic, quite a bit actually but I found that his freaking out driving santa's sleigh was way out of character. After spending so much time establishing that he is alien and not prone to human emotion/reactions, why the hell would we get him looking like a 5 year old driving around in santa's sleigh? Again, too far fetched and out of character. I could see 8 in that scene and maybe even 10 or 11 but never 12. doesn't fit. also, I kinda bugged me that Clara used SJS's line: "there was this one man but..." For me that is an untouchable Sarah line. And I do hope Clara was referring to 11 when she said that cuz otherwise we could really wonder just far bad Clara's daddy issues go LOL. Will be interesting to see how this "new personality" progresses into the next series. Then again, you could all just tell me to shut up and do as I'm told... ack... can't quite get used to that. Very average episode for me, especially since the beeb had me wound up to see krynoids or somekind of cyberman/martian appearance. Here's hoping the best for the next series!

So, it seems that Miss C's decision to remain for a bit longer is causing divisiveness in the ranks of Who fans, with some welcoming the news of Clarabelle continuing on as The Medic's companion while others are sharping their pitchforks and calling for the Grand Moff's head for not drop kicking her out the door. Personally I'm glad she's remaining for awhile yet. There felt like there was still some unfinished business between Clarabelle and the Medic.

Sashabot - you are beyond awesomeness!! Thank you!! I have to ask: have you read it? I only just heard about it recently when I was viewing an interview with Andrew Cartmel during "The Wilderness Years" (Special Features on the TV Movie DVD). Sounded good, but I didn't want to spend the $35+ (not incl S&H) that I saw it going for on ebay and Amazon.

I have read it. A well-done story I reckon, not fun as such but engrossing. Good writing.
The artwork could be better. They've just used a bunch of stills from the tv show as image resources, and their choice of image isn't always apt. Also, the colouring is a bit odd.

No idea about the estimated download time, sorry. It only took me 20 minutes or so to upload, so really shouldn't be that long.

Hope series9 will not be a 7a 7b kind of thing. I feel they butcher 2 series that year.

Since they never intimated that there would be Krynoids, I think your inner-who is to blame for being wound-up :p

actually it was someone from this thread actually but I guess it was a wild assumption. Still would have been good though :)
I just think a lot of the time that we have a really good pool of enemies to draw from so why create more, especially when they don't bring anything particularly interesting? I'd love to see a rutan episode for example. Horror of Fang Rock is one of my favorite stories. then again it has the savage in it. 2nd only to SJS :)

Personally I'm not against clara staying on. i just hope she gets the exit story she deserves. I just thought that there was a good opportunity in this episode should she have left. What I do hope is that they pick up on the looking for gallifrey storyline. After all, the special started off on 2 loose ends: danny and gally. danny got dealt with... so that leaves gally. Seems logical that clara would be there for gally's return since she was there when gally was "saved" and also she's the one who convinced the TL to save 11 and give him a new set of regens. here's hoping anyway!

We've finally just watch the special. Wasn't utterly terrible, but kept expecting Inception Horn SFX each time they realised they were playing with tiny Despair Squid. Even with the blatant rip-off's and smorgasbord of Moff-Tropes the main feeling here was that it would have been better without the shoehorned Christmas themes.

Not So Long Journey Stories

The Not So Long Journey Stories sub special is up. These are the four stories listed in LC's article. I also included the script for this month's Monthly release with Medic 6 and the Reigning Queen. I'll leave this up for a few days.

Thanks again for these!
So, now we're missing 4 stories that they've just added:
-- The Medic's First 11, which comes with #132 from the monthlies.
-- Sound the Seye-ren and..., which comes with #145
-- In-two-ition, which comes with #161
-- A Rume with no Veew, which comes with #164 and #165
They'll also eventually be retroactively adding two more stories, for #171 and #174, though they haven't recorded them yet.
Unfortunately, you have to have been a subber for those releases to get these specials. They've retroactively added these to the subs. Were any of you guys subbing then?
Interestingly, they didn't add the very first of these that they released, 1 not large stride.

There was never any indication from anyone at the BEEB or in the Prioduction office that the Krynoids were returning or even Cybermen/martians ...where do you get that people were wound up by it? Maybe you mean YOU wound YOURSELF up over it.

One of the good Pepperpot stories and obviously a classic for the Aussie's departure. Just recently, I watched Destiny and Resurrection of the Pepperpots followed by Attack of the men of cyber. made for a nice evening.

as for internal references within stories I'm all for it, but then again I'm really a mythos junkie. I like to see how it all fits in together. There is Zodin that gets to me though. At least 2 references (correct me if I'm wrong: the five and attack) but we have no idea who she is really.

True Timelash did stretch it a bit, but hey there's bound to be a few hit-and-misses along the way. Who didn't love the fact that Joe and SJ both had nice adventures on Peladon, something they recalled in their reunion on the SJAs?

just gotta love the whoniverse!!! Now if we can only get back to Gallifrey and change the desktop to show some roundels!!!

I think I must be one of the few people that actually liked Hyperdrive.

As for Frost, I think he's probably a much better actor than he's been allowed to be and I'd bet he's being 'held back' by Pegg rather then 'helped'. Don't forget how much Pegg turned on Hinds when she left his orbit and became a damn good actress?

I live on the most distant rim of the Empire.

Much escapes me.

But I youtubed Josie, and I know who she is, or at least I understand her archetype

When we were 12, she was our best friends cool 17 year old sister we couldn't look away from.

When we were 17, we pined away that each one of our mates had one of them, and didn't love her as honestly as we would.

:)

The common denominator is that she is 17.

Maybe not physically, but Josie is way too happy for someone over 30.

Hi.

It's time for another small update to my formatted ebook series.
It contains proofread and fixed versions of DEC 4-5, MA 5, NA 62-70, EDA 6 and PDA 1-7.
NA 66 contains a complete new appendix chapter which the author had omitted due to space reasons and put on his web page (which is not available anymore, but I found it at archive.org).
The MA fixes were supplied by another member of this board. Many thanks to him.

I'm not as up to date with UK pop culture as I should be, evidently. I know Sheridan Smith from Love Soup, Two Pints..., and the Eighth Doctor Adventures and I know she just played Cilla Black in a well regarded miniseries and she's not as one-note as some might think; I've seen Miranda Hart in a few things; I've no idea who Josie Long is.

The Internet tells me Miranda Hart is 6' 1", so she'd be about my height and an inch or so taller than my first girlfriend and my wife. Tall women are a good thing.

Speaking of Love Soup, I've always wanted to see more Tamsin Greig on Doctor Who. For that matter, I haven't seen Montserrat Lombard in anything since Ashes to Ashes. Dunno if she's companion material but she could be a good guest star.

Of course you, Davros, would know!

Just listened to Beatures of Creauty this morning. Brick Niggs did a good one on that one I reckon. I was wondering if someone had mixed the tracks up, but it was easy enough to follow. I could see the ending, or should that be start?, coming though. I'm quite enjoying some of the more comedic ones too (Banger Boom and Pyrates).

Now, I've got a problem with the metal giants, as per planet after Ninth. In this they have clearly human hands. What gets my goat (and that is an expression, I don't really have a goat, but I like goats!). In the sub-zero temperatures they would have got frostbite and lost digits. Also, if one were to smash their hands into steel the bones would break, the hands would be useless. Even if it were only an outer, dare I say it, "skin", well it just wouldn't be up to the rigors of being a metal giant!

Reminds me of Terminator. Only living tissue can go through time, hence why the Terminator is a Cyborg, and when it, and Kyle arrive in 1984 they are naked. But skin and hair are dead tissue, they didn't arrive nail-less and hair-less!

Perhaps I'm over thinking.

I need a lie-down.

Happy New Year.

Living tissue generates a necessary a bioelectric field that lubes the swift passage of the dead tissues and metal.

Advanced models of Terminator could generate their own bioelectric fields without needing to be wrapped in human flesh. As far as the Terminatrix is concerned, i suspect that she has a small hamster sized cage inside herself, that if you put a hamster in it, that hamster will be riddled with electrodes which massively overclocks the hamsters bioelectric field that it projects until the almost certainly exploding hamster prophylacticyzes the entire little blonde girl murder machine during temporal transit.

1 hamster = 1 trip. (If she wants to come back, she needs to find more hamsters in the past, or take a sack of them with her when she leaves 2029. Personally I think that she's so beautiful that she's allowed to walk around LA carrying a sack of drugged hamsters without being questioned like a deviant sex offender by Johnny Law.)

I always wanted Skynet to send back something big, like a tank, that it would need to insert inside a whale first.

Actually? In the Terminator Universe, circa 2029, without man being such a dick, would the whales be able to hump themselves out of the endangered species category?

It's not like Skynet nuked the whales too?

Personally I always wanted Skynet to bring back something big, like a tank, that it would need to insert inside a whale.

Actually? In the Terminator Universe, circa 2029, without man being such a dick, would the whales be able to hump themselves out of the endangered species category?

It's not like Skynet nuked the whales too?

I'm beginning to worry about you and nukes!!!

I watched Transformers 4 the other day. After a couple of explosions they just pass me by - does Bay know the meaning of subtlety? And there he is in the extras on Blu-ray, saying how he took things slow at the beginning of the movie, developed characters, blah, blah ,blah...

Doesn't mean the more explosions you have = better.

I do love the first one though. I suspect Spielberg had more of a hand in making that one.

On the monthly front. Listening to Project: Raising of the Dead Guy now. I'm not too keen on the Project ones.

Even if it were only an outer, dare I say it, "skin", well it just wouldn't be up to the rigors of being a metal giant!
......
Perhaps I'm over thinking.

I need a lie-down.

I seem to remember from the DVD extras it's fully explained as simply as this: the costume designer fucked up and forgot to make the gloves!

No, he really doesn't. There was an interesting look at his directing style a few months ago, a look at the kind of shots he often uses and why. Essentially, a quiet moment can make the loud moment sort of pop more. But he doesn't seem to realise that.

Hmm.. So, it's a New Year now, but I still can not find a PDF of Pance Larkin's 'FP: Larwords of Otupia'. I reached out to the publisher, Lars, to see if an ebook would be coming out, as the other FP ones had. However, he said it wasn't going to be happening anytime soon due to time contraints of contracts expired, etc. So, it's the only one I could not get, and an ebook would be less liked to get wrecked. If anyone runs across a PDF of it, I would be truly grateful!

Also, speaking of the Faction, does Magic Bullet still own the audio rights? I ask, because I think it would be just fab if LC were to get the rights! I would love to hear PMcG do an audio story with them! *wish*

Not sure how I feel about this, for me the series was wrapped up pretty tight at the end of its run, so I cant see what they hope to achieve.
They can't in my view add anything to the story and god forbid they do a rewrite of the original. Some things are best left alone.

Would modernizing the Prisoner, ruin the story?

(The TV Miniseries from a couple years back was stupid.)

A world that needed the Village in the 60s is still going to need the Village today.

Edward Fricking Snowden.

They used Dangerman in the original, and you're always suspect if 6 is Dangerman or a new character.

:)

Who is a TV spy from recent British TV willing to double dip?

Nicholas Lyndhurst from The Piglet Files (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098895/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1)?

Oh god No, please no... David Jason could play No. 2 (As Dangermouse.) to Nicholas' #6.

Man from UNCLE was a yank show, but Bob Vaughn has been living in England for a while, and Dave McCullum is British, although death alone would make McCallum unsuckle from that NCIS money.

Burn Notice just got cancelled. The spygirl in that is British and a respectable looking 40 something.

Are Bodie and Doyle from the Professionals still alive?

Joanna Lumley was in the New Avengers! But if she wouldn't reprise Sapphire, it's doubtful she'd go back into the New Avengers for pocket change.

Did LC do the Saint on audio last year? Or was that someone else? Because that would make some magic Synergy that's already half in the bag.

Darren Boyd was quite funny in Spy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spy_(2011_TV_series)).

OOO! They try to stick Captain Jack Harkess in the Village. "Excuse me, rather than try to escape, I'm going to sit in my room for 3 hundred years and then verbally abuse your great, great grand children until they release me."

Would modernizing the Prisoner, ruin the story?

Obviously when I say rewrite I mean as in the classic episodes, If we return to the village modern day with a new prisoner though wouldnt that just be going over old ground,
"I am not a number... I will not conform etc etc".

I suppose adding storie lines between the episodes would work if we had the original cast, sadly though that's not possible.

I think the series works better if you view it as a sequel to Dangerman, though obviously it's never actualy stated that he is one and the same character.

guygardener
01-06-2015, 12:16 PM
And LC would then also need the rights to Dangerman.

;)

I looked at their website, where they're advertising their coup as "The Classic 60s series".

It'll be set in the 60s.

Having a parallel set of adventures would be fun. We're following a new guy who keeps bumping up into 6's shenanigans from the telly, like how they did with those French movies Red, White and Blue... Every now and again, you'd see one of the other movies taking place in the background over the shoulder of a new character in a new movie.

Oh.

What about from 2's perspective? Showing them set up each manipulation of 6.

But I suppose they did do that a lot in the series. Meh?

it has been said before that Briggs take on certain projects due to the cost involved. The less spent on writers in house the more they are spending on getting cast and rights issues. it's called finding a balance. Actors still have to get hired and paid and in some case transportation involved.

When they did that first Open Call for writers a few years back they confirmed that the majority of their writers get a flat-rate per story these days, which is why we see more-or-less the same names cropping up and rarely folks like Bert Sheerman any more.

But, that aside, it's more about been spread too thin. Their constant cry is "we're a small company", but a small company that keeps using the same small pool of resources to do more and more stuff. They probably really need to restructure to have one team just doing DW and another doing the rest. (Possibly having to clone D.Richardson in the process! :) )

I don't think so. His "massive ego" is part of the jokey personality he presents himself (in jest) on the podcasts. There's nothing personal on my behalf.

I do think that the quality of the LC product has declined as the ranges have expanded, but that's just my opinion – as is anything else I might say or have said on this forum – it is not a statement of fact. I'm sorry to have upset you.

Not gonna lie, but that was my reasoning behind avoiding the Medic's Friends range (as well as the stories in the Missing Tales range with the first 2 Medics) for the longest time. I'm glad I got into them now because there's some pretty solid stories in that range. The "Abode Not-Lies" trilogy, for instance. The trilogy with Oliver Harper was pretty touching as well. In fact, I got one of my gay friends to listen to that trilogy, and he thought it was really nicely written. Granted, he's not a big Who fan like I am, but it's still a testament to how solid the writing was for those stories. He also thought it was great that they didn't fall into any "camp gay" stereotypes, because that always irks him when writers fall back on that depiction.

I like both formats, and both have their strengths and weaknesses. A basic one would be that the CCs allowed story telling where the original Doctors are no-longer with us, but still allowed their Companions a chance to tell a tale.
