For all his faults, The Moff is great at word play and how the emphasis of certain words in certain sentences gives a completely different meaning. How 'the NAME of The Doctor' is different from "the name of THE doctor" along with the phrase of 'in the name of ...' or 'by the name of...' - how you change the emphasis of those gives completely different meanings.

But ... I just want an episode where, regardless of what ever The Moff throws at us, at the end I want to cry to the skies "F*CK ME THAT WAS AMAZING!!!" ... but I just keep getting that feeling it's going to be more "F&CK ME THAT WAS ... Oh .. hang on ... that bit doesn't make sense ... er ... yeah ... that was bollix ...."

At least the UK is finally getting The Revisited series ... if you can get this particular obscure subscription channel ...

Doctor Who 50th anniversary: Watch to air BBC America series The Doctors Revisited in the UK | Radio Times (http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2013-09-13/doctor-who-50th-anniversary-watch-to-air-bbc-america-series-the-doctors-revisited-in-the-uk)

Or as SM would say ... "Doctor Who is going to take over television...........'s channels you've never heard of"

I think you've summed up things pretty nicely!

BTW thank you everyone for your thoughts. This place always brings a smile to my face (and a warm glow to my heart).

As someone previously posted, I have nice memories, so I've got those to keep me going.

Funnily, though not funny as in Ha ha, my friend's Mother in law died about a fortnight ago and he lost his wife to cancer the day before my Dad passed. Oh well, we're all born to die, it's just how much living we can fit in between.

Also, thank you people for your continued sharing - it's much appreciated. I look forward to sharing more as I can. :-)

tehparadox.com forum has returned with faster servers!

The teaser for a new biography audiobook includes the paragraph:

"Respected and loved, Patrick Troughton is probably best remembered as the second Doctor Who - a role in which he made television history. A prolific actor, he was also a complex and troubled man, constantly wrestling with two lives, one of which he was determined to keep secret."

Ashamed to admit, I don't know. What was the secret?

That link - great! I'm always amazed that people work out the order of things and make a nice web-page to refer to.

I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart (well, better than from the heart of my bottom!) for their kind messages. My dear Dad would have been over-whelmed.
I had to go back to the Nursing home and pack up his belongings today.
The funeral will be on the 26th.
One nice thing to come from it is my sister is flying in from the UK, so I get to see her again. I last saw her in 2008, before that - when we left the UK in 1977. My older brother flew here yesterday, so I saw him today, and my younger brother will be driving here soon to. So we get a family reunion out of it!

I also want to thank people for their continued sharing, be it big or small. It's much appreciated, especially by those of us with little means.
Thank you xxxx

EM. We are all like minded. Without seeming too glib, I think that I speak for most of us here. We do share your loss, some of us have been through it, others await the passage of time which, sadly, takes our loved ones away from us. Parents, brothers, sisters, wives, husbands. Without seeming too glib, my wife asked for a certain song to be played at her funeral, and I was shocked to find out it was at the time, [2003] it was the second most requested song to be played at humanist funerals: Monty Python - Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life (1979) - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzbmDrHXvSQ) It might seem somewhat light, but when this was played as Helen's coffin went into the furnace, EVERYONE firstly looked shocked, but then they all sang along. Nil desperandum dear fellow. I still smile when I hear this!

I've said it before and I'll say it again - what a great community. Thank you, everyone.

BTW, a friend in the UK messaged me on Facebook the day my Dad died to say that his wife had succumbed to cancer (and a fortnight ago his Father in Law had died). It never rains, it pours!

Can't believe how many audios have come out lately - a lot of listening to be had there. My Dad enjoyed the medic, though I think he watched most of the time to perve on the companions!

Speaking of perving - I'm watching the Two Medics at the moment. Being distracted by Peri's mammary glands...damn, I'm off to the Zero room...

I have to say, despite my doubts, I enjoyed the blond dentists adventure in the 1960s. However, I felt the cammon chaps were more like the "pre fab four" rather than the Beatles. and for those who dont know about the pre fab four, look up Eric Idles pee take on the Beatles, "The Rutles"!
Also, am I being a tad cynical here, as the box set of the two detectives of the past has not yet been released? Methinks LC are hanging onto the money as long as they can to gain the interest?
I'm cynical.

I have to say, despite my doubts, I enjoyed the blond dentists adventure in the 1960s....

I was a bit underwhelmed, to be honest. At heart it wasn't a bad story, but it felt like a two or three parter that had been dragged out to a four.

And ... and I know I'm probably heading into dangerous pastures here - even though the accents were authentic at times it felt like they were trying so hard to NOT be clichs that they accidentally ended up being clichs when combined with the faux-Yellow-Submarine joke conversations. Many of those just didn't feel 'natural', for want of a better word.

But, yeah, not a bad story and I did appreciate how it linked back to that very first episode.

I think it's about time they handed the art work to someone else for a while. I'm getting bored of his stuff. And, please, could someone give them clearance to use some different stock photos?

Have to say the Large Conclusions covers are by far the best officially released artwork doing the rounds. The classic range DVD sleeves designed by L ee Bind-ing are amongst the worst kind of ill-conceived badly exectued nonsense I've ever seen. They're actually embarrassing... Check out this awful mess for Tyme Flight with its badly cut out pictures and lack of colour balance... I actually emailed Two Enter-tain at the time to plead with them not to use him again after that one... I'm sure he's a nice bloke - but I long for the days when Claytonne Hick Man did them, and everything was carefully planned and nicely, sensibly and neatly blended and balanced.

The problem is really that it is cheaper to go with what you know than risk everything on what you don't. Amazing as Nick Runge would be as a artist on the 50th anniv. stuff, as an example (random), schedules and prior commitments of the artists do also come into play.

Yeah, while I am not aware of their figures outside of North America, I know that my local stores usually dont even bother ordering more than a few copies of the old series releases due to lack of interest in comparison to the new series stuff. That probably plays a role in the profitability versus production costs margin for the B.

I think they sell *reasonably* well in the UK - and are a consistent range in that there is a core of people who actually collect them (myself included)... But if you are producing/publishing this kind of product it's my opinion that you really do have to make the effort to ensure the packaging looks great. Sadly, since Hick-Mann stopped doing them the quality of the cover picture has generally become very poor. It sort of cheapens everything.

Oh, my. That's TERRIBLE.

My main issue with the LC covers is that I'm tired of seeing the same stock photos used all the time in all the usual ways.

A very easy way for them to change things up ... have a competition. They've LOADS of fans that do artwork that's good enough for covers. All they'd need to do is say "Right. We want original artworks of the classic Doctors and companions in certain poses. Winners will have their work included in montages used by our regular artists for two years. Winners will be credited, they won't get paid but will get a free subscription for one year and free copies of the releases their artwork appears on if not part of their sub."

Sorted!

Absolutely agree. Even though we all have some issues with LC, the art they put on their covers has not only improved over the years but even become pretty great (generally), especially given the limitations of available resources on the Medics that are no longer with us. I wonder what letting them have a go at the DVD covers would result in in terms of sales figures?

One issue with this is that the B has to approve all the stuff LC puts out, including the artwork. As insane as it may sound, it is very possible that they would frown on images that they don't have some substantial legal right to (publicity shots, etc.)

They've used screen shots from the TV movie for several of Sylv's and Paul's audios. If the BBC are OK with that, there's no reason they couldn't source screen caps for others.

They are using a lot of the old actors. Liz had a couple of stories and Romana 1 did the 4th medic stories. William Russell and Maureen O'Brien in the latest CC - and you can't get an older character than Ian.

As for their being 8 Doctors still alive ... there are, but BF are only allowed to use 5 of them. Hopefully this will change, but I can't see it happening anytime soon.

Personally I think BF have done a brilliant job of getting all the surviving classic docs and so many companions on board over the years.

THIS! I bought The Absinthe Extinction SE DVD recently and was appalled by that cover. The Timeflight cover is dreadful - but Lee Binding wasn't responsible for that - if you look on the back it was "illustrated" by Dan Budden

I'm not insulting him. I made it clear it wasn't personal, in the least. His work is dreadful - if you took any of his covers to the MD of a design agency you would be laughed out of the room. I could go into constructive critical detail about why - and I hinted at it... bad 'cutting out', poor choice of pictures, imbalance in the eyeline in montage shots, poor depth of field, no balance in the overall composite image, poor colour balancing etc etc... but it would probably bore you if I went further.

I really like those covers.

I've a fondness for the original Benny covers done by Salmon and the way they captured a scene in the play. The new 'cinematic' covers leave me cold. I've yet to see a 'picture' of Peter where I don't want to snigger slightly at the photoshopped doggie ears and nose.

(And - and, yeah, I know this could be hair splitting - the plays (and books, IIRC) have the lead described as slim and small busted. Her actress certainly is not the latter. It cracks that suspension of disbelief ever so slightly.)

I agree totally - Peter looks bloody ludicrous. And I'm not usually a fan of Salmon's over-stylised work, but when it does work, it's terrific, and it was PERFECT for the Benny stuff. Bring it back now, I say (he's well known enough now that he probably priced himself out of the market, tho)!

no but knowing who the other Doctor are in a poll that ranks them certainly help the validity, when most of the people doing these polls can't even name a Doctor other than Tennant or Smith it makes the poll sorta crap ... you can't rank a top ten without knowing or even watching the other 8

To be fair, TomB took a series that was doing well and made it an ASTRONOMICALLY huge success (for the time period) and he was an almost totally unknown actor. Prior to becoming #4, he had only been in a few roles - the more widely regarded ones occurring a handful of years before his Big Break came along. The best part about TomB wasn't his acting, it was the fact that he just embellished his own personality for the role, so he was THAT GUY on and off set. Also, and this is something that DT fans can't really appreciate in this modern era of 24 episode television; he was #4 for nearly a Decade *on tv*.

This isn't me selling DT short, however, you can't simply say "old fans are jerks" because they remember a Doctor other than DT. Remember the old saying; You always remember your First medic. At nearly 10 years in the role, TomB **is** the character for two entire generations of viewers. Not to mention the children of that second gen that was in their mid-teens when he was only halfway through the role. Just like those people, the members of the fandom that first saw DT on that Netflix run of his episodes, or after they saw some people dressed as him at a comic con, or saw him in a magazine and thought "Hey that guy is weirdly attractive" (Same thing with TomB, btw) will always feel he is the best for the role.

Personally, I prefer #3. But that is just my opinion.

no but knowing who the other Doctor are in a poll that ranks them certainly help the validity, when most of the people doing these polls can't even name a Doctor other than Tennant or Smith it makes the poll sorta crap ... you can't rank a top ten without knowing or even watching the other 8

This is true, I said a few pages back that they should really separate them. It does make the whole reliability factor largely worthless.

I can happily say TomB was in the role for 10 years, and while we are at it we can have every Medic tack 1.5 years onto their stay in the role... My point remains.

Although, Eccleston was only in the role for about 4 months... not even a year. Pretty large exaggeration to puff that up to 4 years.

Actually, I'd say it's a bit of an indictment of Smith, since an established current medic is almost always the favorite. Uh oh! Here comes mother Smith!

I just want to say that This (http://astore.amazon.co.uk/thdowhnepa-21/detail/B00CEB74FW) is by far the best value for your dollar portion of "The Monsters" set.
Genesis is long and far the epitome of characterization of the Medic. The best part being that the seminal line was ad-libbed.

No extras, commentaries, or anything on these re-releases?! I know they're pretty cheap but I think anyone who doesn't already have the stories would do better to pick up 2nd hand copies of the full versions.

I just think that after 50 years, it's there are so many different fans with different tastes, different jumping on points, etc. This idea you have to be an expert to have an opinion is unfair. I hated being a new fan in the 80s when you were looked down on by older fans who would patronising tell you it's not as good as the old days.

Besides, DT made the show a huge success and to a whole generation of people he is the definitive Doctor whether people like it or not, to misquote Sixie.

its a pretty large exaggeration to say baker was 10 years when he was actually on a little less than 7 years.... my point stand.. if you say Baker was on for 10 year --it is like saying the first two doctors were on 5 years and the 9th Doctor 4... it is blatantly FALSE.

You can say it all you want it just isn't true

You say saying Chris would be puffing up his tenure by saying he was there 4 years when he was only there 4 months... well you are adding 3 years 9 months by saying TB was there 10 years...

December 1974 - March 1981 [6 years 3 month]

So by saying the same thing adding 3 years and 8 months Chris was there 4 years...based on your math

Tom baker was there 7 series at a span of 6 years 3 months far cry from a puffed up 10 years [based on your comment]

And the show was made a success by more than DT ; to say he is the one responsible for the success is a slap in the face of RTD and Chris; and frankly the show didn't fully take off in a huge way until Matt took over

Ok, to plough into this bollocks about tenure..... Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker's "years" in the role are irrelevant!!
As ANY old viewer of the 'classic' series will tell you, the show was repeated endlessly for 20+ years. In between new series by Colin Baker or Sylvester McCoy, Spearhead in Space unto Caves of Androzani [for C Baker] were played... thus before Davison we had Spearhead to Logopolis- Jon Pertwee was therefore on TV from 1970- 1981, and Tom Baker from 1974 until 1981...For Colin Baker... JP on TV from 1970 unto 1984, TB from 1974 unto 1984... for SM, JP from 1970 unto 1987..TB from 1974 unto 1987, CB 1984 unto 1987.... and so on
During the years without new Dr Who, these 29 years of the show were shown constantly.
I can appreciate the views of the 'nuWho ' generation, but..... David Tennant the ultimate or best Doctor??? take a long look at yourself... based on what???, his frequent appearances, as other characters, whilst filming the show, a few audios and some DVD releases........ goldfish bowl thinking... "amuse me instantly, or I go and whinge on twatter......"
DT shouldn't even be on a poll about 'the best doctor' for another 20 years... and even, that's if his episodes are even thought of as decent outings..... most were SHITE!!!

Big stuff up in the Davros box - Sarah Jane was in the THAL city and Davros NEVER met her!! Another example of the piss poor writing, for the nuWho show, lazy, smartarse writers, who try and link a 'new' episode with a popular old one.... and don't bother to even watch the video.....

This is something Tom would like everyone to believe. He may even believe it himself but that doesn't mean that it's true. If you watch any interviews he gave, at the time, at no point do you get the impression that you're seeing The Doctor answer questions, even when he's in costume.
Tom's delusion that he IS the fourth Doctor is what has given us two seasons of BF Adventures Of Tom Baker rather than the 4th Doctor Adventures we were hoping for!

Actually she did meet Davros... Her and Harry were being tortured while TB was forced to tell Davvy boy about the Pepperpots defeats

Sarah Meets Davros... Genesis of the Daleks

Episode 3, The Doctor send her and Harry to the Kaled Dome, Episode 4, the Kaled dome is destroyed, the Doctor goes to complete the Time Lord's mission, is attacked by Mutos, rescued by Sarah and Harry.... they go to the air vent access, "I think there may be something nasty waiting for us Doctor". They are heard in the duct and 'captured by Nyder and Davros.."You were right Sarah, there was something nasty waiting for us".... The Doctor is being interrogated by use of Davros' polygraph, as an added incentive the 2 people with him, [that Davros could care less about], will be tortured if the needle shows 'false' statements "Don't tell him Doctor"... cliffhanger of Davros screaming. Episode 5, "Don't tell him!" [now from Harry] tape made, the now irrelevent and unwanted pair are sent to the cells - no conversation between them and Davros...... scene in control room, Sarah has changed clothes????, and sneaks the Dr's items off the table, off to chase Nyder, tape destroyed, locked in Davros' office, released by Friendly muto, out past the Thals, out of the bunker....................

When did Sarah and Davros talk to each other??? When did Davros learn her name???

How is it that a cyborg, who has killed millions, has lived 10's of 1000's of years, has been almost been destroyed many times, has re-created the Daleks many times, would remember a single prisoner, of no consequences to his plans, on the day that he killed all the rest of the Kaleds....

As I said, lazy writing for nuWho,[which includes SJA and Torchwood now...] trying to make SJS important in the larger DW Universe..... but thank you for wanting to argue over a minor point [maybe you should have re-watched the episodes first?]

Actually in Part 4 Sarah and Harry (and the Doctor) are tortured by Davros. Sorry to contradict you but someone will! (By the time I posted, someone had!)

I'm more a fan of Classic Who and the original Doctors myself, but appreciate NuWho almost equally. Davison is my favourite because he's the one I grew up with. But the Moffatt years, although some great ideas, seems like it needed a good script editor to get them into shape. When I watched the RTD stories I hardly ever thought the structure was wrong, but with SM all the ideas are often there, but not quite right, 'paid off' wrong etc. I think Matt Smith could have been a better Doctor than Tennant with better material to work with. An Tennant did a good job, but I like the classic series Doctors better.

I try to never get involved in these sorts or arguments - after all, it can be very difficult to judge someone's intent in text - but I think I have to agree with VoidIndigo's feelings on this one:

Hewe1tt wrote "but thank you for wanting to argue over a minor point [maybe you should have re-watched the episodes first?]" which comes across as very judgemental, condescending and defensive against someone who contradicted them.

However, maybe the language from Indigo was a bit strong, but I can certainly understand why he/she was upset. I actually had the same feeling to the comment before Indigo responded but was going to stay out of it.

Let's not have a flare up of arguments like happened recently. We are all fans of the show - in its many forms - and we should try to keep it civil. We are likely to have differing opinions from time to time, but that shouldn't make us drop down to name calling or condescension. We can disagree and have frank exchange of ideas without fighting. Isn't that what the doctor would do?

No, sorry. :( I should have checked my recent Specials before posting, as of out of all them since 2010 I only have this Summer's Missing Episodes First Medic one. I have the first 26 from Summer 1980 to Summer of 1995, but I'm incomplete after that as I got confused about how the specials were being released. The ones I've got post-2000 besides this Summer's are the Complete Medics Guide 1-8, We Heart the Medic (40th Anniversary special), Collected Comics of Medics 9 & 10, Series 4 Companion, and 11th Medic Companion Vol. 1. I was thinking of making a torrent if anyone's interested.

My only one point would be that we do not need to see every second and every encounter on screen to assume it happened. D*a*l*e*k*s have a history of knowing and following the Doctor, it is hardly a leap to assume he knew a surname when he did know her name was Sarah.

I honestly don't know what it is (or isn't, even) but I just don't feel myself getting excited by this. SWMBO is all thrilled and waiting for it to be released, but me ... dunno ... just not feeling it.

Marvin at 0:38?! finally my two favourites scifi shows together at last ;-)

Total opposite for me, no idea why I am this excited. Maybe it's just total apathy about the TV version right now.

The trailer released at the beginning of the year has been overplayed by me. Love it.

Also, it is kind of a light at the end for me. Been avoiding this place as I was so far behind (I was late to BF and only followed 8 really). Nearly caught up now on most ranges and I am looking forward to actually joining in discussions without worrying I am spoiling it for myself.

Oh and also because it's the only chance to hear 8 this year.

What the zarking fardwarks have Apple done to the podcast bit of iTunes? The nice, simple, List option seems to now only show all available episodes and the only way to show just the ones you've got is via the "My Podcast" view which shows them in an order that you can't seem to change.

Sigh!

Yup! It doesn't help that the desktop version has been designed as if it's being used on a touch tablet.

EDIT - And, seriously, what the heck is the point of the 'My Stations' bit?

EDIT EDIT - And, FFS, they've decided that if you're on OSX 10.6 you can't have Internet Radio any more! I didn't use it that often, but it was very handy to listen to different comedy channels now and then.

what I love about ITunes updates is that they don't bother to tell you that, 'oh, the new version will no longer communicate with your computer because the OS is too old...so now your Ipad/IPod no longer connects to your computer.' AND YOU CAN'T DEINSTALL THE UPDATE!!! and you can't upgrade your computer because the hardware won't support the new OS!

Just found that, too. Thought I'd roll back a version and just leave it, but it just doesn't want to have it. Which is so annoying as 99% of the time applications can be removed from OSX with very little pain and, unlike Windows, leave very few 'orphans' behind.

I lucked out that the work computer will still talk to both the IPod/IPad, but I refuse to load any further updates cause that machine is running 10.5.8 and i'm sure the newest version of the ITunes software no longer supports OSX.5 either... :(

Not yet! Still just, strong, rumours!

I keep hoping they don't. I am an Apple fan boy, and have the iPad, iPhone and various Macs but I really prefer my iPod classic for music in the car and jogging/gym. I don't need to look to skip a song etc on the classic. And they are just so familiar and reliable. If the rumours did come true, I will buy a couple more for future. But I hope not yet.

Nobber

I'm no Mac fanboy as a) each to their own and b) I know how infuriating they can be at times (eg: latest iTunes, and 10.7 Finder not being able to change if 'Favourites' or 'Devices' is top of the side bar), but never regretted the decision to jump from XP to OSX 10.5 a few years back in a (how shall we say) somewhat more viable financial position.

Pulled the trigger on updating two of them to 10.7 last night and was a reasonably smooth experience, especially compared to updating family members various MS laptops over the years. I think it's safe to say that our VFM from them has been pretty darn good.

Your mileage may, of course, vary.

I've seen a way of making our older Macbooks run 10.8, but a bit wary of 'bricking' them so I'll hang-fire on that particular adventure for now. (Especially as SWMBO is not too happy I did the main iMac without telling her and she was somewhat vocal about it this morning ...)

I have to second Nobber's "huh?" on this one. As for the Voord, that's one of the serials where I disagree with much of fandom and actually feel obliged to stick up for it. In fact, it might be the first serial I felt genuine affection for, warts and all, after starting from the beginning a couple of years ago.

We can have Spare Parts OR World Shapers. Actually, if it were fleshed out a bit, I think I'd prefer World Shapers. A beautiful, sad, satisfying end for Jamie. Some sweet combat skills and top-notch TARDIS piloting from Sixie. And a bunch of TLs who of course know better.

That said, other than the cyberman origin, they aren't mutually exclusive. so World Shapers could be tweaked a little to defocus this inconvenient detail and then we can have BOTH and we'll be very happy :D

Not a great comic, but Frobisher saves the day - as usual.

Let's just think about the physics (Flashback to Monty Python and Holy Grail mildly)

Penguins have underwater cruising (steady) speeds of 7 to 10 kph (4.3-6.2 mph). They can probably go faster than that if something with big teeth is after them.

Penguin walking speed is 3.9 kph (2.4 mph) to 2.8 kph (1.7 mph).

After watching Happyfeet however, far too many times, the truly dangerous application of kenetic force from a penguin would be from when it's sliding or skidding on ice and building momentum, where after they could be as destructive as a small cannon ball.

Also, they can Surf, but that might just be more propaganda from Dreamworks.

Ah, that really makes me laugh!

Looks like the pot was filled AGAIN. Sorry but if I was one of these generous donators I would be annoyed they keep doing this.

Don't get me wrong I know its expensive to run etc.

The shambling living corpse that fails to die, rears its head again, and with a cry that would pierce the heavens, howels at the autumn moon!

underneath the barrel would be when they use the Bandrills

I disagree - I look forward greatly to the release of the Bandrils' return in "The Grain Is Not Enough", a 3-disc epic co-written by Briggggs, Morrrrris & Fitttton. In fact, I think they have the potential to be LC's new Daleks, and appear way too much in every single range (including Dork Shaddoes, etc...) ;)

BTW: I'm actually kinda oddly excited about the "alien Voord" coming back, even if they are Yartek-less...

It's from an old comic strip in DWM in the 80s - The V00rd are revealed to become the cybes!

And written by Grant "Drugs Are Great, Plots Are Boring" Morrison (whose work I love, BTW). That strip blew my tiny little developing mind back when I first read it in the 80s. That & the "Voyager" sequence, read 'em over & over again...

Little did I realize when I volunteered to lead my son's Scout group that it would cost me more than the LC releases I was expecting to purchase --;

Haha, you beat me to it...

It's pretty good - a lot of those early nineties strips got fairly experimental and adventurous - but i dunno if I'd take it over Spare Parts. But I like your theory that there's room for both. Tangentially, I think the classic TV show missed a real trick when they didn't get Jamie to stay on with the Sixth Doctor and Peri. I know the hiatus was coming up, but think how golden it would've been to have Jamie on TV again!
