[QUOTE=andyb2011;3589237]I quite liked it, but it didn't feel like it was part of the whoniverse. I think that was partly because it didn't actually begin in Who (unlike TW & SJA). The Doc was in ep 1 but felt like he'd been squeezed in just to link the two shows. Worth a watch, but don't expect too much.

Thanks andyb! i'll probs binge it sometime this week gotta few days off.

Have any of you guys ever had the thought of, I dunno, your watching summit rubbish or your other half is watching summit rubbish and you get the thought that whate ever your watching would be improved significantly if a bunch of pepperbots arrived a just started exterminating people. P.s is Schoolkids worth a watch? the general consensus in "MEH" yes, no, maybe so...

General consensus is often wrong. General consensus in some places is that Medic Whatsit is a silly kids show. Better to give Schoolkids a try and see what you think. Me, I liked it. There was one full-on stinker, imho, and a couple of weak ones, but there were some quite good episodes and some great moments along the way.

Edited to add: my sweetie and I both enjoy Corrie and Medic. We tend to like a lot of the same stuff. That's why we got together.

My personal opinion is that I wasn't a fan of Schoolkids, but then I've not really a fan of the usual "Kids in School with school drama" shows. I did enjoy the sci-fi elements of it though, and liked the finale. My own gruff was that I expected a lot more Turlough-like "Why can't we just stay safe instead of running towards a monster" than I actually got.

I watched the first episode of School Kids and that was enough for me. There was nothing about the premise that I found even the least bit appealing. It was like a bad mash-up of SJA, Birchwood, and 90210.

I liked Grinning much more than the premiere. Didn't find Billy nearly as annoying this time out and the story was much stronger. That being said the whole reset button ending did feel like a little bit of a cop out after all the build-up, so it had that mark against it.

Was reading DWM and the interview with Rubert Hound, and a comment was made that the good thing about Sci-fi is that with culture issues like rascism, refugees, interracial sex and other taboos or areas of uncomfortable nature, they simply set it in 'A galaxy far, far away' on another planet to get away with talking about it. So what is considered taboo or a too sensitive subject (political or otherwise) is okay if you set it in the future, or another society, planet, etc.
Political issues, (such as The Happines Patol), can be more easily discussed if set away from this world.
Where do you think Doctor Who has gotten away with that?
What other Sci-fi in TV, movies, etc has broadened its horizons to speak of judgemental and taboo subjects in a galaxy far, far away.
Thoughts...

del37
04-25-2017, 02:24 PM
Star Trek in it's many iterations tackled taboo subjects, Next Generation had The Outcast and DS9 had Rejoined for example, both attempting to discuss same sex relationships. Being somewhat taboo at the time though and having to get the stories past the studio meant the message was diluted. For example the alien that Riker was attracted to in The Outcast was obviously played by a woman, far braver to have it be a man. It was always so, the interracial kiss in Plato's Stepchildren was filmed in such a way that you can't see Uhura and Kirk's lips meet, a deliberate choice of angle to lessen the controversy. Also having an interracial kiss only performed under duress probably isn't the taboo breaking message they were intending.

Currently Supergirl does that. In the best ways. But that's just something you throw in to shows like star trek and supergirl. And i love that about them.

But im going to have to strongly disagree with RH there. While that's all well and good. Its just dressing, and mainly just pandering to it's forward thinking demographic and trying to show less forward thinking people their own biases might be false. (one could even argue that its almost like a bad apology - "see? see? look!! in the future we eventually stop discriminating against you!! we promise") Tangent aside, i think that type of dressing's heart is trying to be in the right place, and has the best of intentions, and i mostly approve. But all too often, it's just window dressing for some grand adventure story.

But I'd argue - that what makes truly great scifi, is things that challenge our thoughts and perspectives even more. When the MATERIAL itself (not just the dressing) actively pushes us to be more aware of our biases that we DONT recognize nearly so clearly. Many old DWs did this. Some new ones even do. Occasionally TOS did that. But as the later Trek series went on, it just seemed more like beating us over the head with the same lessons over and over again. (admittedly i met a racist who'd been reading xmen for 30 years and was pissed that it was becoming about the acceptance of diversity. i still dont know how he missed the message the first BILLION times) But for my money its more about...

Twilight zone & Black Mirror. That type of scifi gives us daring unexpected looks at ourselves, our societies, and where we might be headed. It challenges the way we accidentally do bad things. and the lies we tell ourselves. And i would argue that, THAT is what makes exceptional scifi.

I love them all. Haven't had a chance to watch any for ages though. One story that stuck in my mind (probably one of the 80's Hitchcock Presents) where a person (I can't even remember if it was a man or woman it was that long ago since I've seen it) is given a chance to escape from prison by an offer from an old man who looks after the the coffins of those who die (probably the undertaker), or whatever. He says to this person that she can get into a coffin, with a dead person and she'll be buried. The old guy promises that he'll dig this person up later, so that they can go free. The more I think of it, I think this person was a woman. So, later, she sneaks into a coffin and gets buries. Time passes and she's beginning to panic. So she flicks the lighter and finds who's in the coffin with her...

And, found the episode: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/xvk2ap_alfred-hitchcock-presents-1985-final-escape_creation

Of course there's Spielberg's Amazing Tales too.

I really must sit down and watch more.

Exactly. I'm sure there were still people who thought he was alive when they watched though. Remember, there are still people out there who confuse the characters people play as being the actual person. Hitchcock was a bloody genius though.

They're good, but would be classed as Transformers by some. Just another robot. I guess they tried to replicate the success of the Daleks by keeping it square or non-human.
Considering that the birth of Doctor Who was based on flukes, we are very lucky to have what we got.
* Terry Nation only wrote The Mutants (or whatever we call that title!!!) after leaving his writing comedy duties with Tony Hancock. If Terry and Tony had got along well enough, The Mutants, as far as we know, would never had been written.

Some of the first 2 seasons of 80s TZ hold up rather well. Great directors like Wes Craven and Joe Dante. With some stories by the likes of Ellison, Bradbury, Sturgeon, etc. (The 3rd season is produced by an almost completely different crew.)
There are other obscure attempts that also deliver. "Quiet Please" being a fav. The Ray Bradbury theater and Vonnegut's Welcome to the Monkey House are also worth looking into.
But this discussion was started looking for 2010+ scifi. So I will re-iterate...
Black Mirror is the best successor TZ has had in years, quite possibly ever. Even episodes that seem to fall flat, stick with me and make me ponder the world and myself, months and years later. (Admttedly, there's one that i thought sucked, but that's to be expected) But some episodes, like the "Waldo Moment" , are more insightful than they seemed upon initial viewing. I can"t recommend Black Mirror highly enough.

Quarks rule!

I can't see what's really wrong with quarks, I mean they are robotic, quite scary, move really slowly so that you can run away from them if need be.

there's nothing wrong with quarks in my opinion.

I, for one, love the quarks. I even named one of my budgies after them. I also named another one Xoanon. Yeah I'm a little bit obsessed.

That's cool.

One of my cats is named Lara, after Lara Croft, named by my son when he was young. Haven't thought to name animals from Who names though.

Great, that's the second enthusiastic response about Black Mirror that I've heard. I'd never heard of it at all until a few weeks ago, so I might just have to check it out. Thanks for the other recommendations too.

You can't get enough of these shows in my opinion. They really allow the writers, directors and all involved to try different things and, has been pointed out, address controversial or taboo subjects whilst being entertaining.

I wouldn't really call Black Mirror entertaining. It's horrifying, mostly in how plausible it all is (it's very much speculative fiction, rather than way-out scifi). Undoubtedly excellent, but not entertaining as such. Excellent like Jubilee was excellent, or like Midnight was. In much the same way, at that.

A good audio converter would be all you need. I generally use Freemake audio converter (it's free).Just tick custom install and untick any software suggestion that may come up. http://www.freemake.com/free_audio_converter/

You should be able to connect any external drive to your Blu-ray or DVD player, provided they had a USB port. I find it's good to transfer a file to a USB thumb drive and plug that in to play things on my TV (through my Blu-ray player). They say that, if you're plugging in a decent sized drive (1TB or more) that it would be good if that drive had an external power supply.

Hope that helps some.

Well, back in 2010, ABC Australia didn't show it for 3 months. By which time, all the bootlegs had gone out to everyone.
Now, they actually extend their news bulletin by an extra 10 mins to accommodate the 46 min episodes (5 mins of ABC Shop online ads, news headlines and coming up afterwards. Not that that matters as we all switch over to Whovians on ABC 2).
However, the above guide is handy so folks don't start saying in ep 12 "boy, that was some regeneration. And into a woman/Kris Marshall/Patrick Stewart" before anyone else has seen it.

Except for trying to blow up the fish (was never sure why that was a goal), the two main characters stayed together for most of it, making it easier to follow for new viewers. The child's role was handled very well. Overall 8/10.

Well the Frost Fair feature heavily in all of Doctor Who lore in prose and audio as well as in the TV show

the first Doctor took Steven and Vicki to one in Frostfire
the second Doctor took Ben and Polly to one in The Roundheads
the eleventh Doctor took River and Stevie wonder to one in a Good Man goes to war
the 12th said he was going to take Clare to one in The Caretaker

it is amazing we took this long to see one on screen.

another thought if we get another River song reference in any of the upcoming episodes -- i am almost certain she will be coming back for the Christmas Special.
in Mysterio ..the pilot and this episodes there have all been River Song callbacks.

Just so everyone can be aware of spoilers, the DW News Page has put a handy guide of how and when the episodes are broadcast across the world. I've tidyed this up. If you're in the UK, look for BST time for each country.

That NZ time is wrong. NZ is ahead of UK, not behind: Sun 30 Apr 7:30pm was Sun 8:30am BST. So spoilers aren't spoilery for very long :)

Except for trying to blow up the fish (was never sure why that was a goal)
Nobody was trying to blow it up. Lord Sutcliffe was trying to blow up the fair, to give the fish a feast. The Doctor was trying to free the fish.

The guide follows Britain Standard Time, not the Time Zones. Most channels will only air the episode after 7pm, so some may be earlier, but won't air during the daytime. It really depends who gets night first, and as NZ is the start of the time zone, it's automatically last as night from the UK must follow to the USA first.
... Checked. It's right. New Zealand is 2 hours ahead of Australia. So, it being 5.38pm here, it is 7.38pm in NZ and 8.38am in UK. As last night showed. But it is in the last place (apart from Denmark) because it's furthest from the UK time zone. When really, they air the episode 2 hours before Australia because the time zone begins in NZ, not in the UK or USA. As we are 2 hours closer to the UK time zone, but not the first night in the time zone, Australia is placed above NZ.
However, you are correct that if all of UK goes to bed and don't talk about the episode until around 10am UK next morning, it should be safe. But, for those recording it, best to aim for a straight 24 hours after broadcast, just to be safe and polite to others.

I used to do a podcast in which the members live in the Eastern States and Western Australia, various States in the US and in the UK. You can imagine the troubles we had to co-ordinate when we were recording. We even had guests on from Russia at one stage. It got even worse when each place would change for Daylight Savings.

So, this week's DW is supposed to be scary. And yet, including Blink, I've yet to be scared yet by Nu-Who. Perhaps I simply don't like the soapy elements in the 2005+ series.
What about others? Any particular episode from the new (or old) series that has given you nightmares?

Why did it bore you?

For me, I tend not to like stories that have, virtually, the one confined area but this episode had me riveted. I thought it was a good example of how to do a low budget episode. Actually, the thing that worries me was that kids would watch and then go around copying what everybody said and annoy the heck out of people.

And I've read the book to try to understand. Is it liked by closet gays (not being offensive, I'm talking only about the attraction by some, of the villain at the end in makeup)? Or is the dialogue somewhat different and magical?

So what I am saying is that we Who fans are a pretty diverse lot when it comes to having favourites.

Both of which I love. I love the great design of Robots and the Robots themselves are well realised. The setting is different, both the planet and the Sandminer. And the dialogue is just fantastic, full of great one-liners, so quotable. L33la is well written for. I love the bits about body language. It's full of great actors too. The scenes where the Robots try to get into the bridge area. Dee84's sacrifice. Great music and sound effects (the visual effects are quite good too - the Robot's red-eye and the view in the bridge from the exterior of the model). In short, it's one of my favourites

BTW, there's a mistake in the book. Mr Dicks starts a conversation between characters, including one who has just been killed off.

Midnight, however, I find chilling. I think it's the lack of true resolution to that story that haunted me. The identity of the villain, the final death, confined space. No real explanations. Interesting debate re Robots. It sort of raises interesting issues about how one views the old series. I love Robots - absolutely adore it because it takes me back to being 8 years old in 1977 and the excitement I felt - huge, huge excitement, of watching each episode of the show when I was that age. If I had never seen Robots before, and watched it for the first time now, in my late 40s - would it have the same effect on me? Almost certainly not. One of my favourite stories is Planet of the Spiders - I know it's not very good, it'll never feature highly on anyone's all time classic list, but i watched it spellbound as a 5 year old and have never forgotten that feeling. Earthshock's probably the ultimate example; adult me could rip it to pieces - the wafer thin plot, Beryl Reid's acting etc, but 13 year old me wouldn't stand for it, as it's one of my all time favourites. The excitement I felt watching the ep1 cliffhanger, as for so many fans, was epic. In short I find it hard to judge the old show fairly now that I'm a middle aged old dodderer!

I must have sat there patiently holding this ancient tape recorder (which I can still vividly see in my minds eye) to the TV week after week. That tape had the worst sound quality, the sound was muffled, it had the voices of my mum and dad (now sadly long gone), it had my own breathing on it, but it was good enough for me to listen to endlessly so Robots is a sound track that I am intimately familiar with. I can't watch Robots now without a warm rush of memory and I can't do anything but love it.

Very interesting. I wonder, is this an older companion? Mr Bread Maker has stated in the past of a fondness for an older companion (see how well he got on with Emilia Rumford in Bones of Stud and the old lady in the car in Deeds of Soom). Though, what with Six and Evie they may not want a repeat.

I quite like all the Classic series. One of my earliest memories of the medic is Planet of the Arachnids - I had nightmares of giant spiders for years afterwards. I do love it though - the Flowers for Algernon Tommy, the chanting, spider-web sleeping bags, Mike's redemption, the chases. Such memories.

I always feel like a "false fan" because I don't see how CAVES wins "best of" awards... Sure, it's good, but I just don't feel it warrants it.
That MAY be because the cause of the Medic's demise seemed so irritatingly stupid ("oops. I stepped in cosmic poison ivy. Welp. I'm dead.") and the baddie had a disco-fever "Phantom of the Disco" costume/mask... sorry, I don't mean to rant.
Yes. The Medic is heroic and selfless and that alone makes it good, but I can't elevate it beyond that.

MIDNIGHT was, in fact, a bit of a gripping yarn (although far too many irritating characters - I was kinda hoping they'd all snuff it, actually).
I'd say it was a tense thriller, but not "scary" per se.

Just MY 2cent perspective. I've been known to be wrong.

I think it's about time they gave old scarfie another companion. adds a fresh new approach with dilemma too as they could kill her any time, which they can't do with known companions.

Yes, I think it's very good. Just seen a picture of her and glad it's not like the casting for the TV series (nothing against Bill, I think she's great) - they've chosen someone a bit older. I like the unknown factor.

I'm guessing Caves of Androzini is liked at #1 because we may have been informed that the 6th was going to take over before the story finished, and the end of ep 3 with PD death cry, some thought that was the moment (in next episode).
And how diverse is Doctor Who. According to the DWM poll, [checks...CB not hanging around...all safe to mention then :-)] Caves is the #1 show, and the very next story in the very next week, Twin D is the least fav at #200. And has remained there. Diverse indeed.

I had seen a tweet (or a post or web-blurb, I don't recall) that had a link to DL a "leaked" version of the next episode, but I thought it was a trojan/clickbait ruse.
Either way, I thought; "It won't be the same quality of the actual ep", so I let it pass.

Interesting to find that it was authentic.

Now I wonder, might the (completely assumed by me) poorer quality HELP maintain an atmosphere conducive to a horror/haunted tale?
Sometimes, I find, a blurry, darker (bootleg? bad-transfer?) copy of a horror movie helps make it creepier.

Thanks for the nickle, here's three cents back.
This is MY 2 cents.

there was nothing poor in quality in the picture or the copy you are making assumptions on no evidence. It looks like a broadcast quality copy. -- maybe just 10 seconds of credit snipped off at the end... as it cuts off right after the main cast members scroll

and i have no idea what link you are talking about but this was given to me friend who is a sound engineer ...and he was given an advance copy due the the special sound nature of the episode... binaural or something like that..... [he says you'll want to have headphones or suround sound on for this]

No offense intended, and I even said that it was purely my assumption (of poorer quality) within my post.

As for where I saw the link post, I honestly don't recall.
I was skimming around and it registered in my eyes - enough for me to muse about its veracity (virus? bot? clickbait?) and quality (bootleg? leaked? etc), but not enough for me to linger upon it.

The surround-sound notice has been mentioned elsewhere, and now I know it's true.
I'll have to watch it twice then, once on the tele and then I'll rewatch on my laptop with headphones (or maybe first with headphones to get the full effect and then on the tele just to see on a bigger screen).

Thanks!

There are three dots (There are FOUR LIGHTS!!), yes... but clicking on them only produces a box that does...nothing.
Well.... actually, at the bottom of the track list is a command to "download all tracks", but if you click those three dot boxes, you can de-select that track and thus reduce the number of downloads.

A weird, reverse, counter-intuitive way of selecting your DL choices.
BUT... when you do select download, they don't GO anywhere (it was DLing forever with no change of status, or indication of location).

If I select the "+" sign at the end of the track, it sends me to the sign up page.

Finished Roberts of Death. I have to agree with the above posts, that, if this was the first time you saw it, and as a kid, it would leave a impact on you. Considering that Mandragura, Deadly Assasin and Talons had a lot of dark/night scenes, Roberts was a breath of fresh air with its gleaming corridors and shiny art Deco robots.
Did enjoy the mystery music. And I can imagine some parts were very scary in 1976.
It's popularity, I think, it being one of the first videos released helped somewhat. While us Aussies got lots of repeats, it was a one show only in the UK, so guessing sales and repeated viewing via video paid into that somewhat.
It is different for sure. Still reminds me of Blake's 7 in its glamour, the style of sets and direction.
Has it changed my opinion? It's made me more aware of why this is considered one of the top 5, but it's never going to be my favourite.

Next episode to analyse...The Nightmare of Edden...

* if you've seen (ex Mythbusters) The White Rabbit Project, I'm doing something simular, using 3 basic critetia.
1) Viewing it during original broadcast with kids and adults.
2) What are the aspects that make it popular/unpopular.
3) Has my opinion changed about it?

There is a new design for the Tin Doghttp://images.doctorwhonews.net/image.php?pid=24528Apparently it's for a new film being produced by Bob Baker and the guys behind the Aussie series and will feature the dog facing off against the anti-matter timelord.

disposable_address
05-06-2017, 03:03 PM
That's also the design used for the Australian TV series produced a few years ago and available on DVD. One season only. The movie was announced a while back, but it seems unlikely that it will ever actually happen.

The partially visible poster in the background is promoting a book by one of Bob's partners on the TV series. Crowdfunded but also, at least briefly, available as signed copies from a UK store, which is how I got my copy. Badly written, unedited, horribly laid out, but it's the only book dealing with that particular TV series we're likely to get.

ETA: I just saw what appeared to be a new article using that picture. I'm inclined to think it's recycled from an older article, but who knows.

The music played on the piano in the vault was:

Beethoven’s Fr Elise. (the first tune played)

Some music boxes do use it, but Jack-In-The-Boxes usually use "Pop goes the weasel" (which was the second tune played).

(All around the mulberry bush, the monkey chased the weasel, the monkey thought twas all in fun, POPP goes the weasel) (which seems to have lyrics in the UK about tuppeny rice, and a cobbler's bench elsewhere).

My Vault theory. As we know, in S9, Moffat and crew kept Daveos a secret from everybody and got naughty smacks, even by DWM (would never happen in JNT's time) for not allowing a sure headliner be known to increase and boost the ratings.
According to the press report in DWM, this time, realising the huge mistake from last season, they told the media about John Simm and asked to keep it a secret...and it all appeared in the papers the next day. "Ouch!!", they said. "Quick, let's release a trailer with John in it". Even though it was all filmed, (they did all of Simms scenes in total secret), they really had no choice. They had already teased us with Mondasian Cyberfolks, remembering the mistakes of last season. But now, they had to give this secret out before they were made fools again.
Pop goes the weasel used for Jack in the Box is a good fit for Jack/John.
Then again, we could all be wrong and it turns out to be Susan (who has been strangely name checked three times already).

Another thing that's slightly bothering me with Vault theories is the food the Doctor had. This is what was said:
Nardole looks at the 2 bags of food and says "I'm actually not that hungry". Doctor replies "Well, I am". "Obviously" is the reply.
It's a bit of a far stretch, but, perhaps what the Doctor was referring to is another past (William Hattnell) or future Doctor. If his intention was to share it with the prisoner, would he have replied "Well, WE are". If, by saying, well I Am, he might, might be addressing his two seperate selves. And in the Vault is actually the 13th Doctor Kris Marshall. (who will finally be young and ginger).
However, that goes right against what was said regarding children being tortured, etc. So it's still more than likely the John Simms Master. (perhaps Missy is really the Rani, but then DWM would not have put the special out detailing the Master history).

That's very sad news. I had known of his illness for some time, and they stuck it out to complete the original canon. But the further adventures were all over the place, with episodes no longer available, sequels being done to prequels no longer in existence and a weekly schedule that, due to their ill health, was never consistent.

As far as audio's go, I have the SH collection that I brought for myself to air on radio, but always found the new single episodes never available via download except through the YT channel. I couldn't buy and support what was never available.
In the end, the whole company centred on just 4 people, producing, editing, writing and performing everything on a weekly basis. But when ill health happens, you've got to end on a high.
The SH Mystery Magazine is also due for the chop, with fewer contributions and fewer sales. The only SH item going strong (that I currently buy) is the 2 issues of MX series publications of which the 2017 annual will be available this month (May).

As far as your original question, the weekly CDs, downloads and sales have all been suspended. But, I'm guessing that items like the original canon may be available from other retailers in the future, simply for the work involved in completing it. 8 best of shows are on YT (2 unfortunately the same). And that's all folks...

Hey, my nephew's 2, and he's not that bad! Not all the time, anyway... :D

My theory about the vault is that it's Susan. As already pointed out she has been mentioned and her photo shown. Bill calls the medic Grandfather, which I think is a cheeky reference and then there is the nursery rhyme. One verse goes "Up and down the city road
In and out the Eagle". The City Road and the Eagle pub are very close to Shoreditch, the site of a certain school and junkyard.

Yeah, my sons weren't that bad when they were two, it's just when they became teenagers onwards that it became a different matter...

Read DWM. :) He goes into a lot detail about how it was it was originally edited and why they didn't hold it back until the actual episode.

Hard to find DWM in print here these last couple of years. Wouldn't mind having it explained to me though. :) *wink wink, nudge nudge*

I thinks its the Doctor 2.5 in the vault, that faulty scarecrow regeneration or maybe its Missy in her Aunt Sally phase.

R.I.P. Catweazle, loved that show when I was a kid and keeping the Worzel theme, Jeffrey Bayldon was the Crowman.
