I am laughing so hard at the fact that that nobody one-off character was chosen to be the big-bad. His story was TOTALLY over. There was no way *at all* for him to become any sort of villain. And what is his whole motivation by the way? I was given an opportunity to do great things and then I blew it. YOU WILL ALL PAY!!

And no, sadly the B and/or Moff have pretty much nothing to do with it. IDW can do anything they want with it, such as the Star Trek crossover.

I actually figured it out a couple of issues ago. Still crap, though!

I still remember when there was fan theory that that character would somehow evolve into Dave-Ross, just because of the 'implant' in his nut!!

And I kinda figured IDW had free range to plunder when they used Grayce in the 8th Medic issue - one of THE most Verboten characters in Whodom, due to 'rights issues'...

I remember an interview with some of the old 1st and 2nd gen companions where they said that it was lucky that so many episodes were lost, because fans have managed to blow them so far out of the scope of the original show that the actual episodes would just be a disappointment.

That said, if 100+ episodes were actually recovered, that would be really great.

To throw a cat amongst the pigeons, are we being sold another serve of; "Old episodes found in a garage" [which turns out to be a large number of canisters containing already existing and known episodes], that, when revealed in a few months time, ends up as better copies of, or foreign language versions of, ones that have been released.... they can't always be "The Lion" in Arabic......
And none of the rumours or stated stories state whether the 'hoard' is tape or reel [images of old reels usually being shown].
Remembering that broadcast 'tapes' in the 60's and 70's were 10-15 minutes long and that would mean 2 tapes per episode, 8-24 per story, depending on length... Evil of the Daleks + The Dalek Masterplan would be 40 tapes or 20 movies reels [for stations which used reel to reel broadcast] 106 is not a lot of stories..... in 1968 the broadcast of the cricket test match from Lords used 132 tapes for domestic replay and 40 reels for overseas release.
We forget how much satellites have changed things.

There is quite a bit of confidence from a couple of people over on GB who feel that around 90 have been located. There is no verifiable proof, but I remain hopeful for that large return. The fact that it has been discussed for over 6 months without any kind of resolution is frustrating, but the people who feel they are in the know are also setting a short time frame for the announcement. If it passes with no word, it will be easier to dismiss their information. I am growing very tired of "there was a hiccup at the last minute" which really does come across as someone being played along.

I think the sons of gallifrey idea could work if it takes place off of gallifrey. Two tls exploring the universe in a (gasp) functioning capsule that get drawn into adventures where they have to decide whether or not to intervene. I'd give it a shot.

We should set a date for the missing episodes to appear. If we don't see them by then, we simply stop discussing it regardless of new rumors, news articles, or "my friend who works at the beeb showed me...".

I'm in WA and I'm happy we don't have daylight savings here. We have enough light in the evenings here without changing the time so that the sun's going down at midnight (and, after getting up when it's dark during a lot of the year, my wife finally has daylight when she gets up in summer).

I always remember the state government pushing so hard for daylight savings over here. It was a combination of funny, pathetic, and annoying. First they tried it for one year, and held a poll. It was voted down. A few years later, they tried it for three years, possibly on the rationale that if we had it three times we'd learn to cope with it. No such luck. Voted down once again. We're three hours behind in the summer and we like it that way!

On premier news, Prince Harry was in the state today, I believe. He got to talk with our premier for half an hour. I'm not the biggest fan of royalty, but that's just cruel. Still, could have been worse. Could have been the PM.

Come to the prairies of Canada, where winter lasts 6 months of the year, it gets dark at about 4:30pm, and the temps can hit minus 40 - and that's not including the wind chill. Guaranteed to cure anyone of being a winter person. :)

Easy. Release what you've got, regardless of state, now via digital download gives the fans a 'birthday present' and then they can make an even bigger song'n'dance about releasing them on physical media later on fully restored complete with the usual extras such as commentary tracks.

Money and good PR.

Good PR from releasing the returned stories as soon as they could. Money from a simple distribution system that they know 'hard core' fans will grab ASAP.

More money further down the line when they release the fully restored versions on physical media they know the completists will certainly purchase.

Or, in other words, the same reason they phaff doing the Special Releases.

BBC recovers early Doctor Who episodes | Television & radio | The Guardian (http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2013/oct/07/doctor-who-early-episodes-recovered-bbc)

Article written by a reporter whose written a number of articles recently about the BBC. Now that a real paper is reporting, and by a writer who seemingly has good inside sources, I think its pretty clear this is no longer a hoax. Now the only question is what is the actual size of the find. The talk on Gallifrey Base is Enemy of the World and Web of Fear (sans episode 3 which needs further restoration work) will be available to download this week. Might more be on the way after? Question: Why hasn't anyone ever posted the current episodes of LC's very fine DS franchise? Despite the fact that new ones are produced virtually every month and are qualitatively on a par with every other audio drama that LC produces all which eventually are posted right here on the V.

Except the DS series.

Answer: Could it be, yes, I believe it is, because it's not a native son franchise, but a foreign one.
In fact American. Yup, the good ole US of A.

That's the only logical reason that comes to mind.

I can't believe it's because of UK Jingoism, because you guys are so cool and generous when it comes to sharing and supporting each other and so thoughtful and kind heartened with sincere condolences to anyone at all who informs us of the loss of a loved one no matter where they may be located.

Therefore I can only assume it is because your just not that familiar with it because since it's not indigenous to the UK or even England, it's not a part of British culture - like our beloved DW franchise and all it's numerous constituents - and consequently it's not really part of fan culture and consequently V culture here in the isles.

However I also feel confident that if someone who had access to these dramas especially the current ones, or knew of someone who had access to them and would be willing to post and share, because of the inherently good story telling and dramaturgy of LC's continuing product line, these episodes would soon become as big a favorites as the rest of LC continuing high quality audios. And would become a part fan culture and thus V culture.

I'd do it myself to give you guys a head start, but to tell you the truth I haven't the fogiest how to upload. My cyber stills are pretty elemental. I've even checked out other sites to read up on the "how to", but I just can't get past all the nomenclature.

So I'm hoping some angel out there will get the ball rolling and start posting the latest DS stuff like say from the last 3 months or so.

With Halloween just around the corner, what could be a better time!

Question: Why hasn't anyone ever posted the current episodes of LC's very fine DS franchise?

They used to have their own thread, but it (like many of the characters) died a death. Every-so-often one will pop-up here, but they never seem to have been that popular. Or, at the very least, popular enough for people to ask for with regularity.

Sharing's easy - just register on somewhere like ...

www.4shared.com

.... and you're good to go.

Thanks for the response Nobber, but do you mean all I need do is ask for the DS audios on the share site and that they could be forthcoming?

He was showing you where to upload.

You go to the mainpage.

(register with the site.)

where it says "click here to upload" you click there.

An explorer window opens which shows files on your own personal hard drive.

You navigate to the file you want to upload, click on it and then 4shared starts uploading for you to your personal folder on their private sever which is not your PC, and they give you a "link" which you can then share and anyone who can then download that file from 4shared.

There's a multi file upload option, or whatever you are using to unzip your files from zips or rars, and you use that to zip or rar a cluster of your files into one single zip or rar.

There are HUNDREDS of other flielockers to chose from and some or less or more user friendly than 4shared depending on where in the world you are and what's happening with your PC.

Check your PM buzzco.

I suspect that what's getting to people, and the real die-hard/uber-fans are getting it the hardest, is probably the lack of verified news announcement, and dicking around with changing announcement dates at this point must be incredibly frustrating for some.

Me, I'm still comfy in my spot on the "believe it when see it" sofa. But a certain part of fandom must be feeling some real pain at the moment.

Points taken, and it really only boils down to a few VERY obnoxious people (*cough* Mr Levene *cough), but really, there's a difference between being frustrated & angry, and acting like a baby whose toys have fallen out of the crib!

If they postponed the announcement by, say, a month, I'd understand it more, and probably grumble a bit myself - but two days isn't very long, so it comes across as a massive over-reaction, especially to non-fans/casual fans/BBC employees ( ;P)...

Exactly, Looshkin. There's absolutely nothing to be gained by ranting and raving and calling the people who are presumably going to supply missing episodes of your favourite programme a word that rhymes with 'runts' publicly.

Babelcolour, he of the colourisation of Mind of Evil 1 (plus other fantastic work) said over on Roobarbs...

People I respect and trust have poo-pooed the story, yet The Radio Times and the Guardian and Sky and the wider media are maintaining its veracity. So I'm torn - like thousands of others - on who to believe. I'd certainly like the story to be true, of course, but the frankly astounding way this is all being people-managed is ridiculous. Every Corporation has effete and weak management - central Government, Local Authorities, the NHS, British Gas, the Beeb, they're everywhere - but surely, surely to God, when TV News and national papers are reporting a story about your company someone, somewhere would have the mettle to take the bull by the horn and formulate a response via their Communications Department one way or the other. To leave an omni-rumour brewing for a year is one-thing, but National Media speculation hanging in peoples' homes for a week whilst sitting in silent impotence in an office saying "I want NO-ONE to speak of this" is a management strategy that certainly calls into question the competencies of the decision makers. I won't point my finger at the Radio Times, or The People, or Bleedin' Cool or the Restoration Team or Forum Moderators, because they must all be as frustrated at the situation as I am, but I do point a finger at the people in suits who have engineered this confusion and doubt purely by lacking a coherent strategy to address the situation in a world that is no longer the 1950s but one that is very much globally active with Twitter, Blogs and forums melting down under the weight of speculation and optimistic frustration.

I couldn't agree more.

Recon's quote of Babelcolour, above, is far more polite than my version ... their PR dept is a fecking disgrace. And I'd argue that changing by one day is actually worse than one month. Especially given the month in question. They *SHOULD* have just come out and said "Yes! We've found some. And they will be announced on 23rd November."

Rumourmill killed in one fell-swoop, gives folks a 'birthday present' and lets the well founded speculation begin.

This stuttering, will we/won't we/can't we have this dance, approach is absolutely shocking.

If anyone here is of a Project And Programme Management bent, this is a fantastic case-book example of how NOT to do the Stakeholder And Communication Management aspects.

I'm willing to give the Beeb and the episode hunters the benefit of the doubt purely because we have no idea all the negotiations, politics, etc that have gone on and what state things were in. What if they had some back but not all so announcing too early would create a sea of angry fans trying to track down who has the remaining ones? Or well intentioned but misguided super-fans wading in looking for the glory?

It seems odd that those people who leaked the rumours are left blameless and the BBC gets demonised.

The way I see it, if it is true - that is great and I am totally, totally hoping it is.

If it isn't? We have heard it before. And, to be fair, at least one of the media outlets that has reported on it is not exactly amazingly accurate with facts sometimes.

To put it into perspective, whether it is 100 episodes or 2 episodes or, hell, 5 episodes - What we have right now is 0 recovered episodes in years. Even a single would be a pretty good victory.

(Note: That doesn't mean I am not hoping for an "Every episode recovered!" announcement.)

Nobber
10-08-2013, 02:34 PM
True.

I was thinking the other day. We all remember The Moff's now infamous "DW is going to take over television" sound-bite that's now generally used to mock the output we've had this year. I got to wondering if that was originally intended to hint at a much earlier, proper, announcement about recovered episodes and their re-transmission over the year. Looked at from a certain POV it sort of makes sense along with the "more DW than ever before" comments. Much like the Cylons; he had A Plan. But it wasn't a very good one and fell apart before it had even started.

Or something like that.

Oh, look, there's a cloud inside that silver lining!

Remember my first WHO convention back in the 80's.

Was so excited about seeing black and white episodes I'd only imagined courtesy of TARGET books that I threw up on way to destination.

VHS, Laserdisc, DVD and Blu-Ray were not an option. The internet as real as The Matrix. Flirting with Sophie Aldred, chatting to Pertwee at length. Great days.

I remember the HK discovery of Tombs with absolute delight. Feel the same way again. If six or sixty episodes, I'm grateful.

Agree it could have been handled better, but feel that someone has broken embargo and things have snowballed.

Anyway, all will be revealed soon.

Nothing like that dreadful episode of ST-TNG Code of Honour.

I was staggered when I saw that episode for the first time a few years ago. If they were going to be that blacksploitative, they might as well have called it Planet of the *******. I am neither shocked nor offended easily, but that was shameful.

Anyone who is familiar with the telesnaps will know that there is progressively more "yellow face" as Marco Polo goes along. I consider that a product of the time, and not played to be offensive. It is not in the same tradition as black face, which sent up the most offensive stereotypes of a culture half a century removed from slavery. There are instances like Breakfast at Tiffany's, where Mickey Rooney plays a stereotypical Chinese character, but for Polo, it was a matter of necessity. And I don't recall there being any snide or derogatory comments in Polo. It was simply a matter of necessity at the BBC in 1963, when there were probably fewer than 5 Asians in all of Equity.

However don't think we should try to change history with old shows like WHO.

I've been thinking that for a looooooong time now - his way of commenting without being specific. "More DW than ever before... in the archives, that is"... :)

After squinting painfully for about 10 minutes, I can 'see' what looks like a midget Silent going "Shhhh", and a headless man in a sports-coat clutching his chest!!!!???? Does this mean the plot involves baby Silents beheading McGann during the Time War(TM)???? :D

That's just a report about the speculation, though. The 'confirmed' link just goes to the previous BBC link that has the word 'expected" in. Still not 100%. Close, but no cigar. Yet.

The closest there is to anything utterly concrete, IMHO, is that snippet from Debbie Wattlings site that I linked to previously.

Well... no - we still don't know how many, etc. But:

"BBC News have now confirmed that a (currently unspecified) number of previously assumed missing Doctor Who episodes have now been returned to the BBC."

So we do definitely have some missing episodes back. Even if it only turns out to be two. Imagine the JOY if it were more, but - CRIKEY.

The point I'm making is that 'confirmed' links to the BBC page that just says 'BBC Worldwide are expected'.

So all it's doing is just confirming the expectation.

BUT .... Hang on a second ... I may owe you a slight apology ... on the BBC page (BBC News - BBC to reveal a number of missing Doctor Who episodes (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-24448063)) is the bolded text

A number of early episodes of Doctor Who, which were believed to have been permanently lost, have been returned to the BBC.

new?

Did that idiot who got banned and came back and got banned and came back and got banned and came back and got banned, ever come back? I would love to hear their take...

I wouldn't, since I'm sure it would be nothing but four letter words. And, since he's not here, I'm going to say what I wanted to say back then but didn't because I was afraid to unleash yet another backlash - refusing to admit even the possibility of hope and attacking those who do hope is very un-Doctor like. The Doctor himself would always admit the possibility of hope, no matter how unlikely or farfetched.

And it certainly looks like Foe was right all along and can say "I told you so!" But he's probably too nice to do that. :)

I would just like to say that it was due to Foe's comments that I was cautiously optimistic about the rumours. I would normally dismiss any such rumours, but with Foe being an established member and the unambiguous manner that he was talking about it (stating he'd actually seen the footage) made me think it might be true. And now it looks like we're about to get an announcement, so I'd like to thank Foe for his initial comments about the discovery, for giving me reason to actually believe the stories, and for staying on through the abusive storm that erupted following your initial comments.

Or maybe do a Jeremy Kyle style show full of grudges, recriminations and DNA tests.

Yet again ... it's still not official. It's close. But ... and, yes, this is a particularly fine hair to split ... but until they say "BBC Worldwide WILL announce" and drop the speculative "expected" it's still not that 100% we need. 98.9% there, but we still need that last 1.1%

In fairness to most posters Vertigo, most of us were supportive to Foe and did not resort to abuse (this isnt GallifreyBase you know!?). It was one very vocal FORMER member who got banned and resorted to creating multiple accounts who caused the stir. We're a nice lot here...but your main point is spot on. We need Foe back to show him some love...some of our members could take him into the Zero Room for a "happy ending"...

Well I for one have never made any secret of the fact that I didn't believe the rumour, but I never doubted Foes' sincerity. All he did was let us all in on something he'd been told in confidence and he certainly didn't deserve the shite that got flung in his direction.

If these rumours are true and some of these missing stories have been found (although I doubt it will be the 100+ he claimed), then I think he deserves the right to post an 'I told you so' in big letters and I'll be right there with the apology I promised at the time.

I think enemy of the world and web of fear will be revealed tomorrow, followed by various vague responses at to anything else, because the 90 eps initially reported by Foe is true. but, no 90 'missing' eps, just 90 eps recovered, including many already in the archive. the newly recovered eps I believe include superior quality recordings, not the daleks master plan, not power of the daleks or the highlanders but will leave the 1st doctor more or less complete and full in valuable gaps in the 2nd doctor archive.

Thoughts on US:TP2013 so far ...

One of the major tenets of the original has been broken. The acting is terrible. There's too many of them.

MUCH darker than the original.

Upside? The jaunt effect is pretty neat (even though they call it ... teleport!). Decent eye-candy appropriate for whatever ones tastes and predilections.

It might make a moderately decent SciFi series a-la Alphas or Heroes, but what ever it was that made TP the series it was is certainly missing.

From what I've been hearing, they've apparently (& this is NOT definitely the case) also found missing eps of Dad's Army, Morecambe & Wise, Out of the Unknown & Callan. I'm personally hoping for some Doomwatch.

I'm also hoping this is why Network's "Complete & Utter History of Britian" DVD has been postponed to March next year... :)

US:TP2013

As a series in it's own right? Needs some work but shows early promise.

As what we'd think of TP based on the original series and the LC audios? Awful.

Make of that what you will.

The CW tend to have more faith in series than SyFy, so it may well make its own place. I just wish they'd called it something else. Or taken Alphas from SyFy.

And they don't even use that iconic theme tune. The swines.

The jaunt effect is pretty neat (even though they call it ... teleport!).

This caught my eye, even though I've never seen the show. I hadn't realized the term 'jaunt' was used (in that context) anywhere beyond Alfred Bester's novel "The Stars, My Destination."

And at some point I'm going to have to play a round of 'will someone help me figure out which British kids' series with supernatural themes that aired on Nickelodeon when I was a wee lad it is that I can sort of vaguely remember but not really. As you can see, I haven't even figured out what my question is. I'll work on it.

One other thing: whatever the news that emerges at the end of the week, I'm definitely not to be considered a dupe, fool, sap, or sucker for having endured reconstructions(!!!) of the first two medics' tenure. If anything, it'll just be that much more heroic. Definitely.

I'm sure we'll figure it out with the hive mind here.

I was listening to the BMFcast podcast the other day whilst out getting the shopping and one of them was talking about a series they'd seen on Nickelodeon. "Children Of The Stones!!" I thought and cursed that I couldn't head back home and tell them on their forum. Twenty minutes later in the podcast one of the other presenters had obviously googled it and announced the name. Was gutted I didn't get the chance to show off!

And, as little as I like Rose after it is all said and done - I like her more than CatherineT. While Donna was a better character (up until the whole end nonsense, hell she is basically nu-who Tegan - which I love) CatherineT drives me insane with her voices.

I think I know what you mean. I still prefer Donna over Rose, but it's a fine line. With Donna I find that just as I can really start to accept her as her own character, something Ms T does/says/acts breaks it and I'm reminded of one of her comedy characters and the suspension of disbelief is gone.

Donna as nuWho Tegan? Well mouth on legs is a fairly apt description, but Donna knew when to keep her mouth shut. And she wasn't whine whine whine I want to go home with a put-upon air all the time like Tegan.
I guess I'm lucky I hadn't watched any of the Cat T8 before Donna, so she wasn't spoilt for me in that way.

I'd only heard it in TP! Spooky. I've tried some of Bester's stuff in the past but it never clicked with me.

'Stars' and 'The Demolished Man' are the only two I've read. I actually wasn't wild about the former, though it's certainly full of vivid imagery, but I thought the latter was absolutely brilliant. If showing its age in spots.

I was listening to the BMFcast podcast the other day whilst out getting the shopping and one of them was talking about a series they'd seen on Nickelodeon. "Children Of The Stones!!"

In the course of my own investigation I decided that's what my mystery show must've been. I was wrong, but it was still a fantastic series. The thing is, I'm half-convinced that I've just mashed together a bunch of vague memories into something that I didn't actually see. But you're right-- if there's a group of folks who can come up with it, they're right here. I'll have to try and put it together in a coherent question to toss out there.

It was a hard, dark, time and, you-know, a fan's gotta do what a fan's gotta do.

In a couple of days, I'll know if it was a case of a fan gotta-doing what a fan mistakenly thought a fan had to gotta do. (?!?) If nothing else, I'm primed and ready to have an excuse to say "You have it so easy these days!" whenever the topic comes up. Ha!

Donna's one of the only thing I love Tate in, and she's far and away my fave companion of the first 4 years. But if she does return, she'd better bring Wilf with her, and they'd better find a way to at least partly reverse that horrible thing RTD did to her at the end of that season (I still haven't forgiven him for it)...

by the way - just a quick heads up to everyone - when the episodes do come out, be very very careful of d/ling anything from 'sharing' sites unless it's been confirmed that you are not downloading something else entirely...remember what some people found they were d/ling last time and it certainly wasn't something they would have wanted to sit down with their kids to watch..

and please, if you can, spend a little money, even if it's only for one of the episodes for now. Put some money back in if you can.

So excited for today's news... Don't care if it's 100 episodes or 1 I'll be happy. Constellation Four (only synonym even close I could think of) part 3 and Undersea Annoyance part 2 were huge unexpected treats to me. Anyway, i wanted ask if anyone knows the exact dates that this month's 3 audios come out. A certain site's merchandise page only lists the months that the audios come out, and I can't seem to find any site that has this info. Not that I don't love reading each and every one of your posts, but it would just make it easier to find them on the days they come out. It would be nice knowing the exact days they come out each and every month, too, if anyone knows where there's a schedule. If not, does anyone know why this is? Does LC not have a firm release day each month, and just puts them out when they're ready? Thank you.

Well Nobber, you almost gutted my chance to show off by naming "Children of the Stones" before i could. Love that one!! "Into the Labyrinth" is the other British kids show which aired on Nickelodeon at the same time. Both shows were produced by Peter Graham Scott.

Also, if you like that kind of stuff, I would recommend "The Stone Tape" by Nigel Kneale. A lovecraftian scifi story which predicted solid state hard drives by the man who gave us Professor Quatermass, one of the chief inspirations for Doctor Who.

Sorry if my comment was unclear or cast aspersions on others - I realise it was that one person (whose name I don't even remember) who created that environment, and almost everyone else expressed support for Foe, even some who were dubious of his claims but were at least constructive and polite in their expressions of doubt. It goes to show how toxic that one person made things that it felt like an "abusive storm" to me. The truth is, this is the only forum that I go to for any DW discussion (although I rarely post, and tend to be more of a lurker unless I have something significant to add), and that's partly because it is a genuinely friendly place.

Totally off-topic, but if you haven't yet done so, try and take yourself off to see Gravity - preferably in 3D and on the biggest screen possible. It's superb, gripping, beautifully shot and somehow manages to be both mind-blowingly huge and claustrophobically intimate at the same time. HIGHLY recommended...

Well... it might have promise but the acting is dodgy to say the least and it really doesn't have much basis on the original series. Still as always give it half a dozen episodes and see how it goes. Sort of Supernatural meets Alphas with a tinge of Buffy.

With all the "we didn't come up with that...." bits, I wondered were they a) trying to link it to the old series or b) distancing themselves from the old series.

Anyway ...

Had posted an article on The Independent, but it's been pulled ... but the key bit was 1.79 per ep or 9.99 for series on iTunes.

One important thing to consider: the rumors flying around are that there are more episodes that could come soon. Some are saying that Morris is deliberately holding back to wait and see the reaction from fans. Some are claiming that negotiations are ongoing. Some are saying that it will take longer (and more money) to restore more episodes. If there is any truth the these rumors, it is ESSENTIAL that lots of people actually BUY the episodes when they're released.

I know that many of us are poor or unemployed. But this is one time that it is essential to BUY the episodes to help ensure that we all can watch more of them! There's plenty of other stuff to share! But at least buy SOME of the recovered episodes. Especially if they do get released to iTunes and are only 1-2 pounds or dollars or euros each.
