Another long-time lurker, now adding to the chorus of "me too" (unfortunately, using the "Like" link doesn't gain me anything, even if it is the most non-cluttery way to show appreciation).

But instead of simply making noise, I offer this riddle: What is it that we often return but never borrow?

I'm just now noticing how many first time posters that are asking for invites, have been here for YEARS! Share a little you - you stealthy lurkers; give us a tale, an opinion, a picture, a raspberry, a virtual beer, anything... I can hear you breathing, out there.

BTW - there is also Visitor Messages, for those semi-public thoughts. I use it to post DW awards gifs on the contributor's Profile Page (Visitor Message). Collect enough satsumas and you could get invited to Nobber's next virtual boozer.

Q: Given that the BBC has veto on certain aspects of content that may appear in the Big Finish range (time war, new era characters and 'Classic' era characters that have appeared in new era e.g. The Master) how might the possible (hoped for in my case) inclusion of the 8th doc in the TV show (in upcoming 50th anniversary) affect the audio series 50TH anniversary releases.

Q: Which character/s would forum users most like to see come back for TV and for the audio range 50TH anniversary celebrations.

I believe the issue of using impersonators to voice the sadly departed first three doctors has been mentioned in a podcast by Big Finish (i could be wrong) and Briggs said the fans were against the idea. It wouldn't bother me, perhaps purists would feel cheated.

That guy wasn't bad, if a little OTT. Weirdly, I thought he sounded more like Hartnell than Ian and Susan sounded like themselves!! (That said, I thought that Giants 'recon' was APPALLINGLY done, and I hope they never try anything like it again...) I have no problem with audio impersonators - David Troughton has already played the 2nd Doc for BBC Audio, and Frazer Hines does a damn good version, too - maybe Sean Pertwee could have a go at the 3rd?? That said, the more time passes, the more they'll probably need impersonators for Companions, too. We've already lost Mary Tamm & Caroline John this year, sad to think there'll only be more in the not-too-far future... :(

Definitely Ice Warriors - as long as they're not overly 're-imagined', like the Silurians - and the Zygons. Also, really hope we'll get to see McGann again, he'd fit in really well, I think. Also be a great opportunity for him to properly show off his new costume & sonic...

BF have used the Master in quite a few stories - just not voiced by John Simm. I shouldn't think Paul McGann appearing in the 50th anniversary would make any difference (Peter Davison appeared alongside David Tennant remember), he's still a 'classic' doctor and afaik BF's deal with the BEEB is that they can only use classic doctors.

Personally I'd like to see the proper Cybermen come out of hibernation and kick the crap out of these parallel dimension imposters for TV and the return of DI Menzies for Audio.

No, but Simms only played the Master for 4 eps and the Audio Stories are often recorded a year ahead of them being released so the odds of them appearing at the same time are miniscule.

On a similar vein to classic characters appearance in the new run preventing BF from using them again - what about Davros?

PLINYEGG
12-21-2012, 11:52 AM
Big Finish record their stories between 5-6 months prior to release. Davros has not appeared on TV and audio in the same year. Simm appeared in 5 episodes, and more importantly these covered 3 years (07', 09' '10) .

I thought they were recorded earlier than that.

To the best of my knowledge no characters have appeared on TV and audio at the same time, but that has nothing to do with my point. My point is that old characters appearing during the new series would not prevent BF from continuing to use them.

Also, forgot about Simms appearing as The Master at the end of Utopia.

conversely I always assume that if I hear a character on BiF it means I won't be seeing them on screen anytime soon. The return of the Master in Unis Dominos has convinced me that he won't be on TV for the next 12 months - even if he is played by William Shatner as Mattress Smith cheekily suggested.

tbh, the only characters that have actually carried over from the classic series to the new run, so far, are The Master and Davros and their audio stories are few and far between. Plus the fact that between the pair of them, they have only racked up 6 appearances out of around 100 new eps and we never see them in the new series again.

Given that, I'd say that the odds of them appearing on TV and audio are roughly the same as William Shatner winning an Oscar for his acting.

Sorry, but recasting The Doctors is a BIG No-No for me. You're not just asking an actor to recreate a character, but also asking them to recreate how another actor would do that character. Asking Person X to do, say, Troughton playing Second.

I know people say things like "yeah, but 100s have done Hamlet" but you never see people saying things like "Oh, so-n-so should do Guilgud's Hamlet"

I love the way the CCs have handled the missing Actors and their Characters and it works really well. It doens't try to replace them, it honours them.

Sally Sparrow would be a fantastic choice. I think the BBC would struggle to get the actress though. I would expect more than one special and consequently probably more than one special guest star. I would like to see Sally and the 8th Doctor (perhaps not in the same episode)

---------- Post added at 01:07 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:57 PM ----------

I would like Moffat to adapt more of the Big Finish stories to TV. If they can Green -Light 'Fear Her' then there is no excuse to not adapt the better Big Finish stories, particularly given the shows decent budget. They may have misgivings bringing non -BBC and therefore presumably non - canon elements into the show but i think it could work. It may be too much too hope for that the 8th doctor would appear on TV with Lucy Miller however.

now this may well set the forum alight, BUT:
with the advances in restoration of old TV stories, it should be possible to "lift" previous Doctors and place them into a 50th anniversary story? Ok, Hurndall did a "passable" 1st Doctor in "the five doctors"OR animate the first 3 Doctors, using soundbites from the BBC archives, and set the story in the land of fiction?
Large Conclusions could possibly get the rights to use the same idea in a mega Doctor story...

"Hate" is too strong a word. Dislike would be far better.

But see what I said about getting an actor to play an actor playing a role,

As for the CC format. Those stories are 'third person', the same way you'ld do accents/voices when reading a book out loud. Effectively they're, for instance, JAMIE doing 2nd and not Fraser. If you see what I mean.

We've lost too many of the original casts and the best way to honour them is to let their works live and NOT try to re-cast them.

To a degree I agree with you. They did a brilliant job in DS9 where they integrated them with the the original Tribbles episode. Imagine how well they could do that these days. But they'd have to be very careful to make sure the tone of the script and the delivery matches the original otherwise it'll stand out like a sore thumb - take the appearance of Pertwee's dialogue in 'Zagreus' - even when you can actually hear it clearly the tone of his delivery doesn't really fit what Paul's saying.

An alternate would be to use the 'Space Time Visualizer' to view something from the classics appropriate to the story with cutaways to the current Doctor when the dialogue required doesn't fit the visual.

Anyone else just LOVE the new Console room? Since the show's renewal, I have been waiting for the return of a more classic "desktop theme" (although we still don't have white roundels yet, but I guess I'll just have to live with hexagons). Finally we have a space/time ship with a control console that doesn't look something put together from a rummage sale! Like the new look for the 11th Doc as well.
If anyone, I think it would be great to see Susan and (oh just let me dream a little!), maybe have her regenerate and join her grandfather once more?
Personally I like the idea of having new actors for old Doctor roles. I mean, Hurndall was absolutely brilliant, definitely one of the better elements of The Five Doctors.

Personally I'd like to see the proper Cybermen come out of hibernation and kick the crap out of these parallel dimension imposters for TV

I just want them to stop bloody stomping around the place in unison like Monty Python's Massed Camping Squad...

So far I think it's gorgeous - have to wait 'til I see the whole thing, though. The console itself is a HUGE improvement - reminds me somewhat of the Pertwee version

I started a seperate thread on this site some time ago. Type "secret kingdom" in search, but it's not used anymore. Nothing to get excited about then...

In response to post 5398 N*t*i*g at the end of the L*ne query - what is it that you refer to? The short story, the fan created audio, or the website?

Here is a link to the PDF, and the audio created some time ago on the green imp site.

240 page TARDIS Tech Book

Howdy!
I just finished upgrading my TARDIS Technical Index and getting it converted into a PDF!
At 240 pages [with lots of illustrations] end up being a pinch over 8 megabytes long. While it doesn't have any direct RPG rules I feel confident that it would be invaluable to any Dr Who RPGs that use the TARDIS as a setting or a story factor [rather then just a gimmick to get from one adventuring location to another].
Email me at [email protected] if you want a copy.

I have again updated my archive of the female archeologists novels.
Thanks to a generous donation it does now include all books which are not officially available for purchase as epub or mobi.
The new additions are no. 20 M_1_s_s_1_n_g__A_d_v_3_n_t_u_r_3_s, no. 21 T-h-3--V-@-m-p-1-r-3--C-u-r-s-3 and no. 23 P_r-3_s-3_n-t__D-@_n-g_3-r.
I also made lots of fixes for no. 16.

Please note that the pdf versions are not very good. They come directly from the OCR software and are not edited.
But the epub and mobi versions should look fine. No.8-16 are even proofread.
If you want good looking pdfs it might be an option to convert the epubs.

Something for you to look at - Planet 55 Studios (http://planet55studios.com.au/)

It has a promo reel for the company doing the Reign Of Terror animated episodes. On the video are some of the clips from said story, plus two other little surprises. Number one at 1.11ish - It looks like Hartnell walking in the snow - perhaps a Tenth Planet animation is in the works? And at about 45 seconds - There is an oddly familiar looking guy to those who have seen Power Of The Daleks (Lesterson) - Could we be getting a Power of the Daleks Animated story as well?!?

Arguably "The One Doctor" (at least it's initially set at Christmas for The Doctor and Mel)

There's 8th "Death In Blackpool" and "Relative Dimensions"

And, of course, Iris' "The Claws of Santa"

My god. Does Briggs have to be in everything? He's the voice of every monster ever, now he's Holmes, I'm sure I saw him on the cover of something else recently...

AND he seems to co-write everything, and direct everything Lisa B doesn't! That's my main problem with Large Conclusions - it does sometimes seem to be the Briggs Show and, good as he can be, it really does feel like overkill lately. It's like Moffat deciding he's also going to play the Doctor, direct, write the music, AND voice the monsters! Personally, I'd like to see him take a step back more often, and let some new blood take a shot...

FYI.

Rapidshare changed it's policy recently that they only let "all the strangers in the world combined" draw 30 gig total from any one persons rapidshare account per day. If you have a lot of public data in your account, that 30 gigs can dry up quickly.

This "fantastic change" happened 2 or 3 weeks ago.

Sendspace for free users only lets each of us download 300 meg an hour before they lock us out for a little while, and one gig total a day before they block us and say "come back tomorrow.

Happy Christmas from the BBC

The Glittering Storm (Nov 2007) was the first made-for-audio Sarah Jane Adventures story. It was written by Stephen Cole, produced for BBC Audio and read by Elisabeth Sladen. It accompanied the CBBC television broadcast of series 1. Presented in the style of a "one-person radio play." Liz Sladen (Sarah Jane) does the narration and all of the voices!

When Sarah Jane disturbs a burglar in the night, she is surprised to find a middle-aged woman, her pockets stuffed with jewellery, demanding gold.

I've made a Christmas BF CD up of stories I brought. I've focused on Christmas themes or pantomine/humor themes. They are: Chimes of Midnight (8th); Bang, Bang, A, Boom (7th); The One Doctor (6th); Claws of Santa (Iris); DW and the Pirates (6th) and Jubillee with extra scenes (see below) (6th). Then added all 4 BF Short Trips Christmas books. Neat. Next year I'll listen to Flip-Flop, Dust Breeding (as it's a classic), Holy Terror, Maltese Penguin, Spare Parts (snowy Christmas).
Merry Christmas everyone...

My god. Does Briggs have to be in everything? He's the voice of every monster ever, now he's Holmes, I'm sure I saw him on the cover of something else recently...

On another note, could someone please confirm that my upload, just further up the page, works? If so, I can get cracking on the others.

Now, this is actually number 6. I misnamed number 5 as 4_2.

The second six are going to be different. Miles changed companies. Set closer to one place, telling a story with many of the same characters all the way through. The cover style will be different. And this is the bad part. The two leads are recast, and given each other's accents! I always get confused, and I really don't understand the reason for this change. But that's a day or two in the future. For now, enjoy!

how did everyone like the new intro and frosty?

Theme = Nothing really new from Gold. He was obviously just given a new set of Orchestra Toys to play with. The series really needs a new composer with new ideas.

Intro = 'Almost But Not Quite' - Some great elements and echos of previous intros (such as The Face) but it felt like .. like their designer had come up with a "first proof of concept" idea and that take had somehow managed to become the final, unfinished, version.

The core of the story wasn't too bad, but it looks like we're in for another far too complicated for its own good season.

It's so annoying as I *like* arc-stories, but I find I get so tired of Moff's circular storywriting where you're so busy watching the magician's hands that you miss the trick, and when the trick is explained you find that actually the hands were probably more entertaining.

Think the new Console Room is brilliant (apart from the lights. naff) and the TARDIS does look better with the new battered look.

Jenna Louise Coleman seams to be a pretty good actress, even if she is playing yet another "sassy gal - Registered Trademark The Mofff" and I'm sure she'll leave her mark on the series.

But I feel I'm being a bit too negative. So for now I'll eject the 'wider story bits' (ie: how Clara fits) and say that it was a fun, Christmas Day, story that made me laugh, was exciting, and didn't have giant steam-punk cybermen.

I'm looking at the directory right now. There are six stories, all with different file sizes. However, there is some kind of weirdness going on. On my computer, the file I uploaded this morning is now called FP04, rather than 05. However, I checked the sizes of the rars compared with the original folders. Each is compressed between 4 and 10 mb, which looks right. So if you just dl'ed story 5, then I think you may have clicked the wrong link.

No worries! And it really is just me. (As in each time I flip to E4 it seems like they're showing an episode - it's like a comedy Stockholm Syndrome. At first you hate it, but shear repetition means you end-up getting into it even though you've seen the same sodding episode five times that day ... )

More I AM THE LAW, plus a reup of ep 6.

If you have to pick just one out of the 22, go with War Crimes (ep 14). It's heavy, thought-provoking stuff, brilliantly performed. When I first tried the series, I found it deliberately hokey and mindless, and no story would stay with me after I was done. I only persevered because Toby Longworth's rendition of JD's voice turns me on. When I got to War Crimes though, it drew me in from the start and when it was over, I just sat there with this ball of unease in my stomach, and couldn't focus on what I was supposed to be doing for an hour. It's been a number of years since, I keep revisiting it (disturbingly often, according to family members familiar with its subject matter), and I still think it's one of the most powerful plays (that I've listened to, anyway) Large Conclusions have ever produced.

Longworth's JD is perfect, isn't it? SOLO is a tour-de-force.

So perfect I can't bring myself to assess Stallone's and Karl Urban's performances in the 1995 and 2012 movies anywhere near fairly.

Speaking of Solo, I'll be uploading the recording session video as well. It's hilarious to watch (in addition to frightfully impressive in terms of how versatile Longworth is).

Not seen Urban's take yet - waiting for the DVD to come out.

BTW - You should really RAR/ZIP and Password your uploads and don't use such obvious filenames. 4shrd are normally pretty lenient, but something is obviously pinging their 'sensors'.

And look through Burneggroll's previous posts on how to post using the 'Reply With Quote' (RWQ) method of more effectively hiding links from snoop-bots.

Not seen Urban's take yet - waiting for the DVD to come out.

There's a 720p rip floating around - excellent quality despite the hardcoded Korean subtitles. Urban's take is different, he totally lacks Longworth's sass and arrogance, which I suspect is at least 30% due to the fact his voice has never really allowed for much of either.

If / when some of the other eps start causing similar trouble, I'll just reup everything to hotfile - password protection, cryptic filenames and all.

I think it's safe to say that most of if not all of us are major domo fans of the audio from the large conclusions concern.

Despite that is seems the monthly produce of the studio's output seems to be locked in a hit or miss upload here. Some of it gets on, some of it never seems to.

Not so of course for a certain time traveling medic, which of course we're all extremely glad of, but for certain other franchises not so hot.

For example, they're have been and continue to be numerous requests for E.4 & 5 of that evil guy who had his portrait painted that didn't turn out to well, and what about the latest adventure from that hot tempered time traveling lady scientist, both of these favorites have requested endlessly on line and still no reponse.

There's other stuff that never makes it on line either, good stuff too. Like the space guys who use the big doorway to other worlds. They used to just have audio books, but now they're in full cast original dramas with the original actors from the famed TV Series. The audios are identified by the franchise name and as Part 1 Series 3 which was already released months ago and this month it's Part 2 Series 3. Next year they'll even be a Part 3 Series 3.

This never gets on line either.

And another is a series of audiobooks, with a new one coming out every month, about a noir silouetted vampire and his cursed family.

Though based on another popular TV series, these tales never get on the V either.

Is it that nobody in the thousands that must log in or even if just the hundreds logging in to site, don't really have any of these particular selections or know anyone who has access to them, or is it just discouragement and a futile sense of hopelessness instigated by the relentless cyber police who are so instrumental in getting V uploads deleted or banned.?

I was beginning to think so, but happily I'm been delighted to see a whole new slew of new ups in recent days. Some recent faire, plus a lot of older faire. All good stuff. Here, here, and bravo. But couldn't we also be blessed with the neglected stuff I've just enumerated too?

And while I'm at it, how about one more request, something that was on the V already some time ago but it's links now are dead. That's that British space guy whose always on the run from the nasty feds in L.C. Vol 1 and 2 and they'll be a vol 3 next year too.

So what do say fellow space cadets, can we help each other out even a little bit more?

Finally a big big thank you to all the very generous uploaders for your wonderful sharing and thoughfulness, you guys are great, and all of us are very grateful for all your altruistic contributions.

Thanks so much brothers and sisters of the V.

buzzco, I think I bought one SpaceDoor SD1 episode a while back because I spotted the name of a favorite actor in the description. Never found the time to check it out though - will have to see if I can locate it.

I started buying the series about that fella with the aging painting, but didn't like the overabundance of first-person narrative and stopped at 2. I'll see if I can convince myself to get them all. They're cheap right now.

The vampire saga - I have the first eps (drama), plus audiobooks 1-12 but again, I'll need time to go through my hard drives. This wasn't a series I managed to like so I moved it - somewhere.

British space guy who's always on the run from the nasty feds in L.C. - is this... nah I'm lost. Who is this? (Edited to add - if Gareth Thomas is voicing the character, then the answer came to me on its own.)

Btw, should anyone have any episodes of that series starring the immortal Scottish guy, I'd very much like to get my hands on them.

Will finish off Law Man tomorrow - 4shared keeps interrupting the uploads. In the meantime, here's Ageless Pretty Guy, Aging Portrait eps 4 and 5. THOSE went up very fast for whatever reason. Might be size related.

Well, this is supposed to be a thread dedicated to the Medics Audio Stories and their spin-offs. Most of the new releases are uploaded fairly quickly and older stories seem to get uploaded if ppl ask for them. Recently, other series have been requested and uploaded here.

Most of the series you've mentioned above, to the best of my knowledge, have never been asked for. As for the team being chased by the feds, they have their own thread and LC 1 & 2 have both been uploaded there if you read through the thread.

Thread 92733

A lot of uploads are deleted or banned because the uploaders don't disguise the filenames and they are easily identified. I've uploaded dozens of medic stories just using the release number and none of them have been taken down.

Totally irrelevant show-and-tell: I just got two little baby parakeets today and named them Jamie (blue-colored) and Leela (green-colored).

They're sleeping after their big day in the cage right behind me. Despite the presence of a cockatoo, red-lored Amazon, cockatiel, zebra doves, a yellow canary and ring-necked doves (those are outside--some of these we've had for several years), our 15-year-old, lazy scaredy-cat who is afraid of the big birds and barely acknowledging of the others, finally took interest. My sweet babies are going to have to stick close to me.

But yeah, another Whovian names their pets after characters.

...And Frazer just tweeted back that it was cute. ;)

Also congrads on your techique at outwitting the cyber cops. I hope other uploaders take notice and use your tactic as well. Again thanks for the tip.

Hi Jijoya,

I downloaded the video recording session of the Law guy, but even though it DLed in a real player file, it wouldn't play in RP or I tunes and certainly in Windows media player either.
So what do I do to finally get it to play?
Thanks

buzzco, it's very odd that iTunes wouldn't play it because this is a file I converted from the .wmv original specifically for my Apple devices, using iPod / iPad optimized profiles in Handbrake.

What I'd suggest is this - the file's been compressed using Winrar, so make sure you extract the video first. Change the extension to .rar if it's downloaded as something else. After the extraction you should end up with an .mp4 file. Try that in iTunes, and if it still doesn't play, change THAT extension to .m4v and give it another shot in iTunes or something like VLC player which is so versatile I sometimes suspect it would manage to squeeze video out of a bathroom tile if I somehow managed to throw one at it.

If you still can't get the clip to play, let me know and I'll upload the .wmv original for you.

As I said, accent flip here. Jars me every bloody time. Also, in this set there are some adventures where the tracks have actual names! I don't know why iTunes, which I use for encoding, only picks up names on some adventures and not all. But here goes anyway.

Finally, these are the last six. There were only 12 stories produced. But there's a book series ongoing. I keep meaning to buy the new ones, but I keep forgetting. And no, I don't have a scanner, so I won't be sharing the ones I have. Sorry!

Pleasantly surprised to see they've gone with an '05 design Dalek and not the 'New Paradigm' one.

Well, given that the design of the "New Paradigm" ones weren't that well-received by most fans older than 12, -being a bit generous, by the way- I can't imagine why they wouldn't be used.

You have to accept that the target audience for Doctor Who is about 12. The New Paradigm daleks were extremely popular with the target audience as sad as it may be for some of the older fans who've lost sight of who the show they love is actually aimed at.

I'm well-aware of that. I meant to clarify the dripping sarcasm in my post a bit better, but I've been sick since Christmas evening and I'm not 100% better. Anyway, I'm 26, and I personally loved the hell out of the New Paradigm Daleks, because I was getting sick of seeing bronze ones all the time. I wanted some more vibrancy and diversity in the Dalek ranks. If anything so I knew who did what function.

Sorry, didn't get the correct vibe! I'm 47, a fan of Who since the early 70s, and I, too, think the New Paradigm are great. There's a real 60s Cushing movie feel to them and it pains me greatly when older fans forget the nature of the show that they are fans of. Hope you feel 100% soon :)

No worries. When I'm sick, my snarky side tends to become my default response to a lot of things. I've only been a fan since Series 3 of the new series, but I'm at least making an effort to go back and watch any classic tales people recommend me, like "Tomb of the Cybermen". But I mostly rely on the Large Conclusions audios as my way of getting into the classic Medics.

It personally makes me sad when older fans of anything complain about stuff they don't like, and try to make themselves out to be the "true fans" and anyone who likes it or doesn't care is a sheep who's easily satisfied with any crap that is flung at them. I've even seen some of these "fans" compare Russell T. Davies' supposedly egotistical attitude towards running the show as being similar to George Lucas' attitude to making the Star Wars prequels, which I find totally unfair. The prequels weren't perfect but I still enjoyed them, much like I feel that RTD's era of Who wasn't perfect, but it was enough to bring the show back to popularity with the general public again. Hell, RTD made me a fan! XD

LOL. Online, I watched almost the entire classic series before discovering Doctor Who was written for children and intended to be educational. That's why the first 2 companions were teachers of history and science. That fell apart rather quickly as the show invented it's own science, history, and became much scarier.

:) Certainly wasn't trying to pick a design fight!

The NPD look never really clicked for me; bottom heavy, hump backed, and too brightly coloured.

However, the new metallic paint job they were given for Asylum helped quite a bit, and for me they worked better along-side the 05 design rather than on their own. Some of them obviously in "guard" roles and others as "office class".

If anything, I'd like to see them bring more designs together more often. As you say, it sort of helps define roles. I like the idea of the 'Classic' design being Ship or Secret Base drones, the '05 being those that do field operations, and the NPDs being that Damn Big Guard and Officer classes. Having the machine fit the role, if you see what I mean.

But each to their own. It'd be a terribly dull world if we all agreed on everything!

But apropos my original comment about the box-cover. With them using the NPD look as the "current brand" design, it was a surprise to see to the '05 design so prominently on the box.

I wasn't intending to pick a design fight, honestly. I was just mocking those who take the show so seriously that a sudden change in Dalek design is "serious business", and if you dare to be nonchalant about it, then you're just not a "true fan" like they are. I just hope the upcoming Cyberman redesign doesn't provoke the same reaction. Although, I know of some people who kept accusing Moffat and co. of "being lazy" because the Cybermen that showed up in "A Good Man Goes to War" and "Closing Time" looked like the Cybus ones except for the lack of "C" logo on their chest. So maybe this new design will make them shut up for once.

Nobber

Ooo! I'd not spotted the latest Cyberman design in the trailer.

Can never decide if like the latest designs of them. On one hand they do look perfectly OK as Robots/Driods, but I don't get that feeling that there's a living being inside them like the classic design. Of course, though, you just couldn't get away with spray-painted boiler-suits like you used to. Just as long as they've dropped the 'Delete' catch-phrase! (And one has to clench a fist as say "Excellent!")
