That made me laugh!

Thanks so much Bulletzen. It's my B/day next Friday.

On a sad note I report that my Father passed away yesterday whilst visiting him in the Nursing Home he resided.

Lots and lots of catching up to do, I'm afraid. Firstly, I missed this post. Been busy since the move, settling in and such - lost touch a bit with the forums. Apologies abound.

And, most notable of those apologies is to you, dear Bulletzen. I am truly sorry for your loss, and I hope that you are starting to feel a little better. Each day it will get a tiny bit better. The good folks in here seem terribly supportive as well as being good at helping to take one's mind off something, troubling or otherwise. And, of course, there's always WHO to chase away the blues.. :)

That was me! And I expect the video to be awesome when I eventually get a chance to view it tonite. DailyMotion is sadly (but understandably) blocked on the library computers.

My next thoughts are about a Victorian Whoniverse cross-over sans the Doctor: Jackson Lake & Rosita, Vastra & Jenny (and Strax, I guess...), Jago & Litefoot and the Torchwood Institute of that era with the younger (?) Captain Jack. Surely with the Cardiff rift we can have Gwen (and maybe Ianto for tearjerking reasons) pop in from the present/recent past to meet Jack before he meets them. Wibbly-wobbly... Sadly, with the age of the actors playing Jago & Litefoot, this couldn't easily be done as a tv mini or movie, leaving comics, audio or text adventure.

If you were to have a Who adventure set in the late 1920s or early 1930s (35 years after the events of the Talons of Weng-Chiang) B&B would be exactly the right age to play J&L - someone give Moffpops the heads up!

Not much, really, is it?

We all thought that would be the case about the Hurt incarnation. I'm trying not to feel bored by it and wishing they'd asked McGann back. Look, I know it's John Hurt and that should in itself be exciting, but imagine how much fun it'd have been to see McGann back on telly as the medic! I s'pose I shouldn't complain as I have no idea yet what they're actually got in store. It'll be cool to see 10 again, plus shifty shapechanging baranacled aliens!

Also was wondering if anyone has or knows how to get hold of a copy of the Tom Baker interview DVD from the recent 4th Medic Time Capsule box-set. It's meant to be very good and I would love to see it.

I'm inclined to agree. I'm only on the second series, but it seems to consistently have better overall writing, better overall acting, and more imaginative plots than any other I've heard. Which is surprising, since going into it I figured it would be a non-stop Victorian horror cliche-fest. And while it sort of is, they keep managing to put an appealing new spin on familiar ideas with their "X-Files by gaslight" approach.

On the whole, I'd agree. Thought this run was just ever-so-slightly under-par but, honestly, nothing I could really put my finger on.

However - I do have one quibble. And it really is purely a quibble. I just wish they'd cast someone else as Ellie. All I hear is Prof Summeryfield putting on a cod-cockney accent!

Yeah, Ellie can be a bit much - she stuck out like a sore thumb in series 5, and was the one thing that didn't work for me. Whereas Lou Jamieson slotted in perfectly when she turned up - too bad they couldn't keep her there instead!!

The problem with that would be that she would eventually suffer Martha-syndrome in that (while she is awesome) the two mains in the series are almost like two aspects of TomB with all of his overbearing attention-grasping. Which works very well for them, but would ultimately push Leela to the side.

Anyone else absolutely interested in them doing alternative S7 covers featuring the new identities?

Oh. I'm fine with the character. It's just the choice of actress and how she's played. Ms B is just far too posh to really pull off a 'common accent' without sounding like a posh-bint trying to act common. They should have picked someone like Kamille Koduri who's, er, naturally common.

Actually, you know, I can never make my mind up if I like Ms B or not. She's rather physically attractive but there's just something about her that's 'cold', something that says that you really don't want to get on the wrong side of her. shrug Dunno!

But I am surprised she doesn't do more stuff, to be honest. She's a decent enough actress, and the only non-DW-related role I've seen her on TV in (an episode of the soap "Doctors", funnily enough) she seemed fine in front of camera.

It's probably her years of being a producer and having to deal with all the people that don't make good "Behind-the-scenes" material.
I have no issues with her at all, aside from the fact that I think - as she ages - her ability to do said Barmaid is diminishing pretty quickly due to her voice going deeper and Barmaids voice needing to be indefinetly higher.

So I'm watching We're the Millers, and my mind finally connects that the plain girl with all the attitude is the Master's daughter. I suppose I come to this conclusion all the time and file it away as irrelevant, since if Eric has forgotten that he was the Master once upon a time why should Emma care?

However...

The display was put together by me, half containing my personal DW collection and half the libraries own DW books and magazines. Sadly as of Monday afternoon I have to take down the display. :(

my gf/co-worker and i did one a couple months back at the library we work at, we had to take it down after 3 weeks. but we're doing another one for the whole month of November...sadly a DW night is not in our library's future, nor does our library have any DW material. well, there is ONE Torchwood audiobook that i donated, that's it.

I once went into my kitchen late one night after hearing a rhythmic tapping. There was a chill in the air and a strange light played across the walls. I'd left the fridge open and a tap was dripping.

As Looshkin said, I think he'd get a bit upset at most things ...

But ... serious answer ... As much as we all appreciate what he's done for The Pepperpots, and Sighingmen would he PLEASE consider handing the mic over to others every now and then? Just for that change of underlying vocal-texture.

Er? What else? Oh, yeah. thumbs-up on the Classics range and the one that I think has surprised most people, the Painted Chap range. Bravo on those.

Forget Vienna. No-one cares.

The 'we like stories' bit in trailers/podcasts sounds ... wrong and pervy.

Get the BBC to remind folks about LC more often on the various DW TV related programmes and actively push that the remaining Classic are still producing pretty decent stuff. (In fact - point out it was a damn disgrace that PD didn't mention that very fact on the the night they introduced the next incumbent.)

And not wishing to end on a negative note - I think it's safe to say that as much as we like to take the widdle out of LC now and then, I think we'd all miss them if they weren't around. Yeah, there's been a few clunkers now and then, but on the whole the quality is still pretty good and, arguably, was superior story-telling than the last batch of TV.

Oh! And ... all indications are that LC are taking the 50th more seriously, and more to heart, than Moffat. That is most certainly to be applauded.

pretty much agree with everything Nobber says in his entire post.

On the above bit (the BbC/LC promotion thing) I always got the impression that there was some licensing thing stopping them.
I remember hearing a R2 interview with "our Jamie" and the brainy girl promoting the official BBC endorsed audioGo audios for the 50th. It was the Graeme Norton show but as he was ill or something had Maria McErlane as stand in host. at one point she said something like "I'm sure I gave them my Bianca, once" (referring to the part she played in #51: the place-where-the-things-you put-on-fishing-hooks-live), and (even though it was radio) I got the impression that she was shut down from that line very quickly, cut to music, not mentioned again.

Will the Beeb not allow LC promotion crossover? as a public corp, are they allowed to give advertising to a private company? (most tie-ins like the mags are by BBC worldwide or similar)

I'm still flabbergasted they didn't take the opportunity at the end of the 8th/Char-lee DotD story (which is far and away my fave so far, just sayin') to at least have a short announcement along the lines of "If you enjoyed this story, why not go to LC.com and check out our range of 8th medic adventures..." Would've been the right moment to do it, if ever there was one... (Then again, as neonihilist says, maybe they've asked and the beeb said no?? Wouldn't surprise me, sadly...)

They could still say "Of course, we're all still doing full plays that you can hear on Radio Four Extra now and then." - They don't have to mention LC directly that way.

andyb2011
09-30-2013, 12:12 PM
I can't see any reason why the Beeb would be against anyone mentioning LC. Yes, they can't advertise directly but whenever you get a guest on a chat show with a book/dvd or whatever they always manage to plug their latest venture. Baffling.

Any extra advertising LC does would only help the beeb. The more people buy products from LC the more the beeb can charge for the license. Not to mention the more spin-offs LC can throw at us.

Oh! And ... all indications are that LC are taking the 50th more seriously, and more to heart, than Moffat. That is most certainly to be applauded.

Well, let's not forget that the TV series is no longer just trying to please we fans of the franchise - they are trying to make ratings by continuously expanding the audience. The irony being that the series must constantly distance itself from what makes it a classic in order to appeal to audiences that have never heard of it. For many Americans, DW was about a British guy that traveled in space (not even mentioning time) going to alien planets. So when it became super popular here in the new series? Suddenly we have far fewer historical themed episodes and lots of weird aliens.

Meanwhile, LC is run by ooold fans of the series. Not only this, but their entire business enterprise is founded on the continued existence of the old actors and the fans that loved them growing up. For them, the 50th anniv really is a big thing, a huge thing.

For the tv series? It largely means nothing to the new audience (they have only been aware of it for the last decade at MOST in some cases) other than "Wow 50 is a big number, our show rocks!". There is really no need for them to do more than the bare minimum in their episode - They got DT and BP, that is more than enough. Toss some Pepperpots at 'em!

I think the REAL 50th treat is going to be the Hartnell-era drama.

I have to be honest, it's about all I'm looking forward to. For what is probably the biggest tv show ever, on the beeb, I think the coverage has been shite up to now and the shows announced to commemorate the 50th sound pretty lame too.

I would have liked the beeb (or even Sky) to show a few classic stories running upto the big day but we get zip, nada...

The only reason I'm looking forward to the special is hopefully we'll get to see a bit of the Time War but all the leaks about the story has really spoiled it for me. After a pretty piss-poor last series (not to mention Miracle Day ... no please really don't mention it), I'm really jaded with the whole show right now and the only thing that is holding my interest is the hope that Capaldi can turn things around, and the LC stories.

The irony is, of course, that had RTD (or JNT, back in the day) been in charge I suspect even the most die-hard of us would be screaming "YES!! We know it's the 50th!! You don't have to keep reminding us every five minutes!!!" by now.

This is true - there doesn't seem to be any happy medium. It goes from one extreme to the other.

On one hand we have RTD who was a good show-runner but his writing of individual eps could be a bit iffy and then we have Moff, who's individual eps were usually pretty damned good but is a shit show-runner. What we need is a good old-fashioned Star Trek transporter accident to merge the pair - but knowing our luck we'd get the 'evil' one who is just shit all-round :)

I always thought that if JNT had left at the end of the vet's run he would be though of much more..

his redesigns of the show from the theme; to the tone of medic 4 for series 18 was outstanding
his casting of Medic 5 -- really inventive and kilometers away from 4 ;
he made a Tardybox team along with Medic 5 that was very like the original Tardybox crew.
the death of a companion that stayed with many of us
the return of the Borgmen
the return of the Mister
The Opal and Onyx gaurd-ians
the 5 Medics and a double- double shot of the brigmeister
and then the mudburst planet major
peri and ol sixie....

if JNT left after the Hollows of the Mudplanet...-- his "era" would be a fonder one.

However we got the janus connection, series 22, the courtroom drama of a clock bitch;the screaming red haired kang of doom; and Omega and the bunnymen;

if ol sixie had gotten his own prodman i think we would have seen a very different future for the TARDYBOX

and to be fair he did give us Radaghast and Top Card toward the end.

Well I was honestly thinking more of JNT's real love for the show and his desire to ensure it got the widest audience it could and to convince them to love it, too.

But I think I agree with VoidIndigo, above, JNT should possibly have moved on after PD left.

To be fair, if JNT had left before CBaker joined up, it is just as likely the Beeb would have just cancelled the show outright rather than wasting their precious (medic-funded) fortune on searching for an entire new crew at that point in time.

after series 22 is when the BEEB to a dim view of the show.
the show was on a high profile coming out of 5 medics and the return of the pepperpots if JNT choose to go after he cast ol sixie... the BEEB would have found a new prod... most likely Eric Sawrod would haver stayed on and knowing his relationship with Holmes and his non relationship with JNT this could have made for a very different turn to the series which it needed - Series 22 was pretty much crap..

Xusenet is great as long as you check regularly as their 'free' retention is fairly short.

For three-days you can can get a free account with ...

www.hitnews.com

... 800+ days retention and good d/l speeds. You have to re-register every three days (or as needs be) but you can generate new email addresses using something like Yahoo's "disposable addresses" feature in their email system.

The group you need to keep an eye on is ....

alt.binaries.drwho

And ....

http://www.binsearch.info/

... is a great place for searching and creating NZBs.

On the whole, I'd say use XUse to check day by day, and fall back to h-news when you've found something you want older than 10 days or you're in a desperate rush for it. XUse may feel slow, but I find it's worth the wait.

(And running h-news at full speed with all connections can hog your router and, effectively, block your other traffic until it completes. I generally throttle it to 15 connections running at 400mb/s)

I've never used grabit, but I guess it's got a "save download queue" feature to let you pause downloading.

Really? Excellent news. They worked together really well last outing. Don't mind her, or the Doc, popping back now and then. But just not too often. Those two have proved themselves more than capable of holding their own stories together without 'special guest stars'.

EDIT TO ADD - Corks! Just looked at the LC news about it and for a horrible second I thought we were going to be subjected to to a certain Consulting Detective turning up.

And, no, before anyone leaps to an obvious conclusion. It's not a horrible thought due to the actor, but more that I find that particular character works best when in 'The Real World' and not involved in anything fantastical. The Painted Man Xmas Special last year proved that Logic and Magic don't make easy bed-fellows for this particular character. (IMHO, of course. YMMV.)

The art has been atrocious.... this was a chance to showcase the best artists in the comics industry-- many who would jump at the chance to draw this... dropped the ball in a major way-- don't like the regular series either.

The only comic IDW is doing right is faithful reprods with great colors of the "classic stuff" the irony being that when you place the classic stuff next to the new material. Make you want to tears up the new stuff.

Xusenet is great as long as you check regularly as their 'free' retention is fairly short.

For three-days you can can get a free account with ...

Thank you so much. Those sites sound just what I'm looking for. Just one question - what is retention? Is it how long your files are on there for, or how long others files remain, or something else. New to this. Thanks again.

It's how long the files remain on the usenet server. Different servers have different retention rates; smaller capacity sites like Xuse will delete a post (especially larger binary files) after 10 days, larger sites like Giganews will hold on to a post for well over a 1000 days.

For reasons that have never been made clear, Freemantle decided to pull the licence from LC with very little notice. Not only did it stop them recording the series that was already in production they also decided to pull the distribution rights, too, so they can't even sell the previous series.

And the major debacle ... the last series they did ended on an incredible cliff hanger we're unlikely to ever hear resolved.

The new series (which starts next week, doesn't it?) just looks like a 'meh' repainted version of Alphas with a bit of Smallville thrown in. I'll give it a few episodes, though.

Yeah, you really can't blame LC for getting the license pulled away. Undoubtedly because of plans to do a new television show that is now almost a reality. Although, it took a while in development.

American Network TV is obviously doing anything it can to try to mimic the success of BritTV. (ex. - Elementary). So of course they are going to license something that looks (to them) like a cross between Dr Who and Superheroes. A show they are praying has a built-in fanbase hiding out somewhere.

Have 11's little messages back to the past actually been linked in anyway? Have these stories had a connection that, woooossshhhh, has just passed us by?

I think that they are, but I have a strong suspicion that we won't find out how til next month's story. I kinda envy that Matt Fitton has to do that writing task, while at the same time tell a standalone adventure. Especially considering that all the other writers of the range basically had to tell a story with a particular Medic and companion(s), and just throw in a little 11 cameo so there's some kinda connective tissue linking these otherwise standalone stories. I'll say this much for them: they've certainly made for some engaging listening at my volunteer work these past few months.

Yeah, hope all the dots join up here, too. Otherwise ... and I know we're into quibble time ... otherwise it's a bit pointless calling the series 'Destiny' as that implies a journey from one story to another. Besides that, agreed, they've been a fine extension to the LC CC format.

Talking of which, I do hope that AGo continue with these now that LC have dropped the CC range. On the whole they've produced some cracking short stories in this range.

As a writer of individual episodes he's been superb. As show-runner ... not so much, IMHO.

And, surely, it's the hardcore fans he should be worried about ... they may release a single!

I recommend uploading your picture to an image hosting site and proceeding from there. They don't tend to have such small size limits. Depending on how public you want the image, imgur is a good one for will-definitely-be-immediately-the-unofficial-property-of-the-internet. I also quite like photobucket.

I don't know, that character was a loose end that needed tidying up. There's three more episodes to go - it might be a double bluff...

Storywise it's slightly more forgivable than Adric turning up as the Big Bad in the guise of Manuel off of Fawltey Towers...

Thunderbirds Are Go! was a revelation in colour and widescreen in the cinema.

So, I saw this on tumblr earlier today. What does everyone think about it?

Sons of Gallifrey (http://www.sonsofgallifrey.com/)

Should we be reading something into the appearance of CE in the teaser trailer?

Interesting if it happens. But sorry, Sons of Gallifrey just sounds like it should be about a Timelord biker gang :)

True.

Enevitably producing anything for the 50th anniversary is a poisoned chalice as nothing will ever live up to the over-blown expectations of the fussiest, nerdiest, and most ungrateful fans in fandom.

All I need for the 50th is for John Hurt to either be the Valyard or and old insane 8th Doctor, none of this in between crap, that's going around the rumor mill.

for those who like lc medic audio, here's a treat, now knock your socks off, requires torrent knowledge and an account at the site you are heading to..Have fun

url=http://theaudiobookbay.com/audio-books/doctor-who-big-finish-large-collection-multiple/#more-20341

I tried that one a month or so ago. There are no seeds - after a week w/ no download, I dumped it. The comments all complain about the lack of seeds as well.

This is a better torrent. Not quite up to date but usually pretty well seeded

A quick heads up - there will be a slight delay with the next batch of A-Go ups I was going to pass on to you this weekend (Verve-Oyds, Ulty-Mate Foh & the latest At The Beebeecee), as the site's 'checkout' has been undergoing 'maintenance' for a few days now, and no-one can actually BUY anything!! As soon as that changes, I'll be working to get 'em to you...

Also, a reminder that I'll stick up the next Bloke's 8-1 when it's released, as I pre-ordered it with the last one, so no need to ask for it five seconds after (or indeed BEFORE) it comes out!! ;) (Just remember, I'm in Oz, so there may be a small delay...)

You cannot just make Doctor Who - which you don't own the rights to anyway - and just present it to the BBC expecting them to buy it. It doesn't work that way.

And that's before we get started on the "young Doctor" idea being bad.

Thats quite a sexy looking site but i could only get to it via the below link

Download Big Finish - Doctor Who The Mega Collection (500+ Audio Adventures/700+ Hours) Torrent - KickassTor.net (http://kickasstor.net/big-finish-doctor-who-the-mega-collection-500-audio-adventures-700-hours-t7501258.html)

Also i quite like the idea of this sons of gallifrey, but i seem to be in a minority, although somewhere inside me the idea doesn't quite sit right, but i wouldn't mind giving it a go if it is given the go ahead. guess i'm slightly in two minds, or should that be two hearts

The release of Tenth Planet has, I believe been brought forward to October 14th in the UK.

So this time next week I should hopefully be able to comment on that theory.

Doubtful myself though.

My best to all

Random comment relating to the Missing Episodes rumour (I apologise in advance)

As anyone who is on Gallifrey Base or any other Who related forum will know, the Missing Episodes rumour has refused to die; in fact on GallifreyBase some fans are very vocal of having seen proof etc and predict announcements at the BFI Gone Believed Wiped convention next week. However, I wondered had anyone else noticed that the Tenth Planet DVD trailer on Amazon has no footage of the "animated episode" and animation is not mentioned in the description or the DVD cover.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-The-Tenth-Planet/dp/B00EF1I85Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1380989586&sr=8-1&keywords=the+tenth+planet&tag=donations09-20

Surely if you are a Who fan or a casual viewer, this is something you would want to know about before you bought the DVD. The fact its release date is AFTER the convention made me wonder perhaps this is the first of many surprises.

The Ice Warriors made mention of the animated episodes in the Amazon description : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-The-Ice-Warriors/dp/B00CD492ZU/ref=pd_bxgy_d_h__text_z?tag=donations09-20

I know we have all seen footage of TTP animation, but - and again my apologies to all who are tired discussing this or who may have mentioned this before - I just thought it might be significant. Thoughts?

Funny you should say that....
was just watching the zygon dvd, and the coming soon bit which is always for the NEXT release was actually for the moonbase, and NOT the 9+1 planet, which is actually the next release.....
anyway back the moonbase, despite so called pics that I have seen online, no mention of any animation within the trailer, and although not 100% certain, having seen the two surviving episodes, I was thinking "hmmmmm.... I think that's from one of the missing episodes"!
Now its been a while since I actually bothered to watch those two orphan episodes, and I would not stake my life on it, however I do feel some of the footage within the trailer was NOT from those two episodes!

Just an aside, but the 5.1 mix on the Zygons DVD is really well done for those with the necessary equipment.

The themes' baseline and clarity made the hair on the back of my neck stand up, had such a grin on my face.

Then there's the brand new (rediscovered) scene..............

The "big reveal" is that the villain that's been going around kidnapping companions is Adam Mitchell, that git who was in Ecclescake's Kaled and Lenghty Sojourn episodes.. the one who put a porthole on his melon. 50 years worth of material to choose from, and THAT'S who they go for. What a waste.

And this isn't "old fan snobbery", it's a lack of enthusiasm for taffoM-style "shocking twists", where the most obscure, forgettable details are supposed to be a huge revelation. Not everyone can be pleased, true. But that doesn't mean we should applaud mediocrity and lackluster efforts, either.... especially when I did purchase said materials.

If this was supposed to be a compelling introduction to Who for neophytes, it falls flat on its face. If it was fan service? Doubly so.

Glad you said who it was as I honestly didn't remember the character at all!

Wow.

Just ... wow.

What a complete waste of time. Even for those that haven't even read it!

Given that one would hope Cardiff and The Moff would have an overview of this sort of thing, then wouldn't it have made more sense, and tied in nicely with the last series, if ...

The Great Intelligence.

... was the one doing it?

I am laughing so hard at the fact that that nobody one-off character was chosen to be the big-bad. His story was TOTALLY over. There was no way *at all* for him to become any sort of villain. And what is his whole motivation by the way? I was given an opportunity to do great things and then I blew it. YOU WILL ALL PAY!!

And no, sadly the B and/or Moff have pretty much nothing to do with it. IDW can do anything they want with it, such as the Star Trek crossover.

Beep really would have been a better character. Heck, Nobody No-one would have made more sense.
