What does the title mean?

Everyone is in the middle of their adventures.

It refers to the red warning light, doesn't it? As 4 says at the end of the first episode.

But I also assume that Nick was told what the title of the episode was going to be before he was "given" the assignment.

All of this talk of differing opinions has got me thinking about Talons of Weng Chiang.
It always seems to come up as one of the all-time classics.
Am I in the minority of people who never really rated it? Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the interaction of the guess characters (and I really like the spinoff series), the pygmalion subplot of the savage, and I like the homunculus and the disfigured badguy (I also have their action figures, which are pretty cool), but I always thought the story dragged on far too long. Maybe if it was cut down to 4 eps it would have been a tighter story (in the same way that I think some of JPs early stories could do with some of the filler removed).
What do you guys think?

evilmonk
10-29-2013, 12:11 AM
oh thank you - not a fan of that episode myself - except for the savage - i liked what they did with her but yes, it went on far too long. It always struck me as a 'beware the evil asians' episode. They couldn't have done more stereotyping if they'd tried. I can't help but think that it would have made a good 1950's cheesy horror movie

That could probably be said of all 6 parters.

But remember that all TV was slower then - and that it was meant to be viewed at one episode a week not all in one go like a feature film or even one episode a day.

If you cant be arsed to click the link, Here is a cut n paste job, because I am nice like that!

Marco Polo will be announced and released before the end of the year. The restoration work, which was problematic and caused it to be delayed after being scheduled alongside Web and Enemy, is complete. Don’t expect it to be announced before November 23 as the BBC will want all eyes on The Day of the Doctor. December’s BFI event could be a potential venue.

The remaining episodes in the hands of TIEA will be staggered releases through 2016 with The Massacre and The Macra Terror following 2013′s Marco Polo in 2014.

Conversely all three stories will be announced in the first half of 2014.

There are still conflicting reports on the origin of the prints, from Zambia, various sources, a TIE distribution hub or even Sierra Leone, there seems to be no one set rumour on this yet Zambia seems the most often mentioned.

The Web of Fear 3 was recovered but was unviable.

The Tenth Planet Episode 4 has been found as have the remaining episodes of The Moonbase and Underwater Menace which could potentially lead to controversy and the discoveries have let to some consternation between departments. This is also the reason The Crusade was never scheduled for animation, it has been discovered.

The Power of the Daleks has been found and will be the final release of the Doctor Who DVD range in 2016 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Patrick Troughton taking the role.

Conversely, Power has note been recovered and the missing material still in TIEA hands is: Marco Polo (7), The Reign of Terror (2), The Crusade (2), Galaxy 4 (3), The Myth Makers (4), The Massacre (4), The Celestial Toymaker (3), The Savages (4), The Smugglers (4), The Highlanders (4), The Underwater Menace (2), The Moonbase (2), The Macra Terror (4), The Faceless Ones (4), The Abominable Snowmen (5), The Ice Warriors (2), The Wheel in Space (4), The Space Pirates (5). Found at varying locations including Ethiopia, Nigeria and Zambia, however some material may not be in recoverable condition.

The BBC have linked performance of The Web of Fear and Enemy of the World to any future negotiations over material in the hands of TIEA. While the Doctor Who DVD range has sold well, Hartnell and Troughton have been some of the lesser performers, the Aztecs Special Edition fell below expectations and the Corporation were not initially confident that the material had a large enough audience for justification. The performance of Web and Enemy has led to a green light on the return of all Doctor Who material held by Morris. Negotiations continue but will be concluded by 2014, TIEA hold significant other material that the company wish for the BBC to purchase.

The Doctor Who production team in Cardiff were made aware of the finds in the summer of 2012, the inclusion of the Great Intelligence in Series 7 and Mark Gatiss’ lavish reconstruction of Marco Polo in An Adventure in a Time and Space is no coincidence.

The BBC will announce the entire haul of recoveries at once in December.

Talons is very the pinnacle of this show, IMHO ... Best doctor, best producer, best writer, one of the best directors, one of the best companions and a breathtaking supporting cast combined with the Beeb's extraordinary capabilities with costume drama resulted in something that really transcends the medium of science fiction. I can watch it again and again - though the same goes for most of Hinchliffe's era - but this really never gets tired. The accusations of racism baffle me because that was exactly the point - it was a very knowing take on the Fu Manchu tradition - and while Bennett's make-up is not hugely convincing, his performance is of the very highest order.

I wish I could say I overstate how excellent Talons is to people, but no matter how much love I throw at it, it never fails to laugh at how boldly i understate it.

What we could really use for the 50th is a bluray edition of that story. And the modern series, with its sudden love affair with the trio from the victorian era, could stand to take a leaf from Talons' book

Also, it boggles my mind that it is even negotiable as to whether or not the B attempts to get ANY lost episodes back, since it was their horrifically short-sighted archival practices that are to blame for the loss in the first place.

None of which is news if you follow Lord Flasheart's posts on 'the other place', or the Planet Mondas Missing Eps forum. Do keep in mind, though, the final paragraph, which jawa left out:

"As always this section is to be taken as rumour, nothing more than that. DWA is offering no comment on the validity or truthfulness of any of these pieces of gossip and as you can see some blatantly contradict one another. We shall let you the reader decide whether any have a ring of truth or all of them are unfounded."

Somewhere in this mish-mash lies the truth. There IS lots more to come, though - that much is becoming more and more apparent. When & What - we wait in eager impatience to find out... :)

It's easy to say that these days, but back then television was still seen as 'disposable' and the recording media was horrifically expensive. At the time, who could have honestly have guessed the cultural impact of some of the programmes?

I never said that it wasn't allowed to thank the uploader. You are making a really snarky comment out a little statement about how this place wants to canonize the uploader, yet draw and quarter the people that actually produce it- because a server goes down for a few hours or that they use certain personnel to their best advantage to keep costs low [ironically]

Yeah, as much as I love Peri (and Nicola), making the character American and not hiring a proper American actress wasn't one of JNT's best moments. At least she's managed to keep it reasonably consistent over the years. I can't think of any time where she's slipped 'in character'.

Talking about Peri has just made me twig something(s) that were ever-so-slightly niggling me about LATE. Only a little thing, but wouldn't it have been nice to hear from the rest LC's 'home made' companions in it? I'm sure they must have had suitable clips available from Evelin, Erimmem, Kerys and Hax. Even if it was just a small echo of them.

I still haven;'t gotten around to solo father, I have his hamlet on DVD, got half way through the politicians wife and I was shocked to see him in the 1st new Fright Night... The sequel with jaimie Murray was balls.

His only watchable much done since Nuhwo has been St Trinnians The secret of Captain Frittons Gold.

No Harry Potter doesn't count as "good" because it's made for 5 year olds and the intellectually hamstrung.

Oooo. Would have to argue on the watch-ability of Fritton's Gold ... oh .. hang .. WATCHABLE, oh yes, as, well, it's a St Trinians film. (Excuse me whilst I pop to the Zero Room for a while and consider the sundry delights of Gemma Arterton and Talulah Riley). ENJOYABLE? Hmmm ... not so much. Which was a shame as they managed to make the previous one work really well.

His stint in the HP movie doesn't really count as he was barely in it.

I was going to watch his new thing, but they showed the entire plot in the trailer so it honestly didn't seem worth it. It's on the PVR though.

Oooo. Would have to argue on the watch-ability of Fritton's Gold .
Yup, it was crap (which was a pity considering the Ealing Comedy tradition) ... watching DT at the BFI event, I couldn't help thinking that while he bailed on DW at the right time, he has suffered from its curse (just like JP, TB ... and pretty much every actor who has played the role - unlike some of the companions, who have done OK)

Thanks to B for the Space Race ... good listen, though I thought Leica was just a camera ...

Someone appears to love snarky comments.

It was a comical reference to the debate that happened a few days back. We have a sense of humor on this site, its one of the major reasons I come here, because it is not as serious and stiff as a lot of other places! Also if you actually read my post, it WAS thanking Bulletzen. Thanking him but also using a little self aware irony about recent posts. Thats what we do here!
If that offends you, I apologise, however I do not apologise for having a little jest and a knowing wink to recent events on this forum with my friends.

It's easy to say that these days, but back then television was still seen as 'disposable' and the recording media was horrifically expensive. At the time, who could have honestly have guessed the cultural impact of some of the programmes?

Johnny Carson. When he found out they were doing this to the tonight show he became the oncoming storm, obtained the surviving tapes, and personally funded their storage in the bottom of a salt mine or something. Too bad he wasn't a fan of the medic as well.

ok, first Thanks to bulletzen, goldie and timevortex and all others for taking the trouble to upload

sorry to those who failed to understand that my comment about a statue was tongue-in-cheek, (though I point out that goldie is one of the few females here and something tastefully done sans clothing, artistic and such.....*pause while I visit the zero room*)

hectic and manic is my schedule at the moment so I am only able to dip in and out every few days; who knew that we had a reputation in the wider internet? who cares?

bring your praise, your derision, expertise and experiences
your views and your comments, let's hear remarks and reminiscences,
let a thousand voices be heard, each from a unique nerd
let there be discussion and discourse, disagreement and debate
foster friendship, aim for amity
reject hate, it brings calamity
one view, one mind, one opinion, one truth.....?
that would be a forum to exterminate!

Some brief thoughts on the Oct main. Not really a review, but more a question really.

Was it just me, or did this feel like two stories banged together?

You've got the Cold War story with the moonbase, and the Rise Of The Planet Of The Doggies story. The black-hole thing that connected them together seemed, well, tenuous to say the least.

Not as much out-right FUN! as last months, but not too bad, really.

^ I am really falling out of love with LC. I enjoyed the anniversary story, but it's the exception to the rule.

Just the Main Range or as a whole?

For me they did go through a major slump, but the last year or so hasn't been too bad. A good example being the latest Hex trilogy. Phil O can't act his way out of a paper bag, but that run was superb. It was great to hear Bonny back, too. The CCs feel to have had new life injected in them - ironically just before they cancel them.

Probably the biggest down-beats have been Gally limping to the end and G-Less. (Veenna was too bland to count)

In the upsides; UNIT-Dom was a pleasant surprise, C-Measures has hope, DGray was excellent, J&L still trotting along nicely, M-Stone was pretty good.

Ye gods, they've a lot of ranges to try and remember ...

Could that be part of any issue (on any ones part) that there's just so much coming out from them these days that it makes it more difficult to really stop and appreciate the releases properly? Quite possibly.

On average, I think I'd say this has been a good year, and definitely a better year than '11 or '12.

EDIT - Just checking back when Hex was last heard. Last Sept! It honestly doesn't feel that long. I would have sworn it was this year. Blimey.

DemonSeedMonkey
10-31-2013, 04:47 AM
I'm just referring to the main range. I think the CC's are almost entirely wonderful. I've yet to go and listen to all of the J&L's, though I have liked what I've heard.

I loved the Phil O arc, which I felt went from strength to strength. But since that run, I have only really enjoyed maybe 2 main range releases. And looking forward, there's only so many times you can see 6 and Sil without asking what's the point.

Hello,

Um...so, first post on the forum and for someone who gets intimidated by online forums after a very nasty incident on one of the Doctor Who forums, one of the big ones, where I asked a fairly innocuous question and basically seemed to enrage some members to the point where I feared an angry mob and burning windmill was in my immediate future. However, a couple of questions that I hope don't create anarchy if I may?

I don't have much that hasn't been uploaded but can someone recommend a good file sharing site - I have a few bits and bobs that might be of interest.

Is there a good way of working out the best way to post any uploads and let people know - I notice that there is an almost Dan Brown-esque level of code and secret code and so on and I don't want to be a dope and put it up whilst simultaneously alerting opus dei?

Finally, I have a hankering to try the Barnabas Collins and Co stories from BF, but there are so many - can anyone recommend somewhere I can download them?

Many thanks :)

Welcome to the madhouse and you needn't worry about creating anarchy - we're already waaaay past anarchy and never be afraid to ask questions.

Everybody seems to have their own preferences as to file-sharing sites. The most common ones here seems to be mediafire, 4shared, sendspace but there are many others.

As for disguising what you are posting, or asking for, again this is down to personal preference. Some people insert extra characters (see Goldie's post earlier) but some like to be smart arses and come up with really obscure codenames. Usually when I upload files I change the filename and remove all the id3 tags from the file (never did find out if this is absolutely necessary but I like to err on the side of caution).

As for Mr Collins and co.; I can't help you there.

Seems like Evilmonk beat me to the punch ...

There are several sub-series within the range: the witch and lawyer stories, the immortal guy throughout the years, the witch/evil reverend/Dark Lord stories and the one offs. Most take place in the 70s after the show, the immortal guy stories mostly take place in order and there are others that are scattered throughout time. They're best if you've seen the tv episodes and when heard in order, but they're still very enjoyable without.

I like 4shared. Easy for ULing and fast for DLing. As for the codes, sometimes it's moving letters around, sometimes it's synomyms. After a while you learn the knack of reading them.

I'd rather not leave these up for more than a couple of days, if possible, to decrease the danger somewhat. I've been wanting to share with the folks here for a really long time now, but have been scared about potential c&d, etc. Still am, actually, so hopefully everyone can get these and then in 24-48hrs. I made a key (a simple text file. 1 mb.) of your codes versus the actual names verus the episode numbers.

also...

(which would have saved you time.)

(There's two pages. Everyone has to go to page two or they're only seeing half of it.)

Where from then the collective we, if the collective we have a paid account can download all 32 episodes as a single rar, or if "we" have a free account we can download all 32 episodes as a b1 archive (which requires downloading their (free) b1 archiver and waiting for an email alert.) or there's the "add to my account" option if we want to have these files but lack the hard drive space, which seems to be much quicker than physically downloading the data immediately in the here and now

Oh my, I do seem to be a bossy SOB, sorry.

Does anyone this that the 4th Medic should get his own new assistant. I like the the idea of a historical one with him, perhaps someone like Charley only a bit older and wiser at the start.

There's not really much space to slip in a new companion though, is there? Around the 'Deadly Assassin' period, perhaps?

The other companions could be "away" similar to Ace and Hex during the Black/White stuff. Or Fives companions when he was running around trying to find the key again.

Yeah, I'm sure if you look closely there's a gap that could be shimmied open, but on the face of if the majority of his stories run into each other.

EDIT - Of course, BF have managed to squeeze plenty into the gap between 'Planet Of Fire' and 'Caves' :D

I do like the idea of LC giving him a 'home grown' companion. They do have a good track record in that respect.

The 4th Medic Adventures Series Four, the Medic meet William, the Pepperpot with a heart. This season will explore the relationship of the Medic and his first Pepperpot companion. When the Medic encounters William running an underfunded rescue shelter for abandoned and mistreated animals, he questions the very foundation of his beliefs about his most hated enemies. The truth of the underfunding, and the true heart of one misunderstood little pepperpot will draw them both into a thrilling and breath-taking adventure to end all adventures.... deep into the heart of Scarrow youth league itself!

Sorry, but I have to continue my Will A*rrowsmith rant....

Having now heard the trilogy, I have come to the conclusion that A*rrowsmith is not only a poorly crafted stooge, but also inept as a character.

He really didn't do anything to drive the story along. Pedantic or not, if you land on a planet with Daleks, and are told that bad things happen to you if you mention them, you say NOTHING! But Will just can't help himself.

Sadly, this trilogy will not be gracing any 'top-ten-must-listen-again' lists any time soon.

I'm finding it hard to think of a poorer companion. I'm sure i'll be corrected by someone though :)

So your wishing a curse on Charley or some other nice young girl? :p

#4 had way too many companions, but if young and impressionable is your thing, just pretend Knine is a very small girl trapped in a life-support capsule shaped like a dog!

He did what every companion EVER has done.
Fault him if you like, but don't judge him as needing to be superior to every companion that has come before him - their role is to get in or cause trouble, and the Medic saves them :p

Mucho thanks JKJ7214 for your aces up post. However, the main reason it may have been taken down so quick, is not just because of a dirty back stabbing V mole, but because it was so blatantly obvious with all your many posts.

There must have been at least a dozen or so different posts when all you needed was just one with a reminder that all the ULs are listed on that site which indeed I believe they're were or damn close to it.

Again thanks ever so much for your generous shares and especially for putting up LC's DS which nobody else here ever would even after I pleaded with the community to give it a chance despite it not being a UK franchise.

Please don't be discouraged from any new contributions, just try to be I respectfully and thankfully add, a little more in fact a lot more... subtle.

Your coding was spot on but smartly just keep it one post per UL.

Good show.

Oh I don't know... remember the "excuse" given in the double medic story? The lady was off doing a course somewhere... so perhaps the savage one could have been sent to "Mrs. Beaton's school of how to eat at a table using knives, forks and spoons"?

Other than the deadly assassin, there is a period between the savage leaving and R1 being dumped on him looking for that key. Also lets not forget he buggered off after regenerating, hence the whole Xoanon affair!

Personally.
Agree with number one, but Leela should be a few places lower,Amy and Rory alot lower, Clara alot higher and swap Susan and Ace's places.
And as a big fan of Martha, I would have her in the top 5.
just because I have the time
1. Sarah Jane Smith
2. Donna
3. Clara
4. Martha
5. Rose
6. Ace
7. Jo Grant
8. Tegan
9. Romana II
10. Leela

How about during Robot? Terrance Dicks implied in the novelisation for The Face of Evil that one night shortly after regenerating he jumped in the TARDIS and dematerialised long enough to become the face and voice of Xoanon.
It could explain any eccentricities the Doctor has that would not always be in his televised persona, and he could always plan to go back and pick up Sarah Jane.

I'm shocked they put Zoe so low - seriously, 29, where she's only above Adric, Kamelion, Vicki, and Ben? To me that invalidates the whole list.

And I like Donna a lot (it helps that when she first appeared, I'd never seen Catherine Tate's comedy, since I do not like what I've seen since then), but number 2 is WAAAAY too high for her.

Also, I don't like the way the Brigadier never appears in these lists. I realise why, and I wouldn't want to count the whole UNIT crew as companions, but the Brigadier is a key character in Who history, and someone who played a core role in many more stories that most proper companions.

The reason I never even bother to click these polls is because the modern Who series fanbase is always going to overpower the classic Who fanbase due to age.

That isn't me saying "oh you stinky new modern who kids suck!", it is simply my statement that you can't have a poll with 33 companions on it, then only have the most recent 3-4 companions somehow take the thing by a landslide. It is simply not a fair poll. Now, a seperate "Classic" and "Modern" poll would be much better/more accurate.

..Plus these things never have MY favorite companion on them anyway.

We forget how young Wendy was at the time, slightly older than Rose, and objectifying children is just bad juju.

Although what are child labour laws like in the future is 16ish year old Zoe was working on the Wheel for evil earth government as a SPCAESCIENTIST... Did she graduate college by nine?

Liz was fantastic, but she was a crap companion. Dr Shaw wanted to be his equal, so she was pissed off at being relegated and eventually left because life as his subordinate was unfulfilling.

Depending on which file sharing site you use, you could put the files into a folder and just post the link to the folder instead of individual files. Bit of a bugger spending all that time uploading only to have them taken down straight away :(

OHMS is a very underrated addition to that franchise. Within that universe it's not a bad story, has a particularly great character moment, and (honestly) Lazenby ACTS far better than anything done by Connery in the next film or Moore in his bleak era.

I would love to have seen how it would have progressed with Lazenby. I sort of want to say he'd have gone down the 'darker'/'realistic' route that Dalton tried to head down, but that's not really quite what I mean. Just not that we'd end-up with comedy Red-Necks and a character like Jaws that was castrated on his next outing.
