As a brief aside - many folk here listen to the GraphicAudio range of plays? I've a handful of their DC Comics plays and, generally, find them OK. Compared to BF they're too narration heavy for my taste and, oh-boy, are they LONG. Five Hours is a short one ... But, on the whole, the acting is pretty decent, very cinematic sound-scaping and good stories.

Equilibrium - by Simon A. Forward (3rd Doctor, Liz & U.N.I.T.) - Cancelled BBC Past Doctors novel

Thank you very much for all those! That Equilibrium novel (spoiler) barely has a mention on the net. Have any links to some more info?

I didn't know Equilibrium existed either, until it showed up in an archive of PDA PDFs. I'm assuming it was cancelled by the BBC given the trade dress.

As for the other query, sorry, but I don't have any of the documentaries or interview tapes. I have some bootleg DVDs I got at WizardWorld Philadelphia (now known as Philadelphia Comic Con) about four years ago of the several of their unlicensed dramas, namely:

The Airzone Solution
Auton
Auton 2: Sentinel
Cyberon
Daemos Rising
Downtime
Mindgame
Mindgame: Trilogy
P.R.O.B.E. #1 The Zero Imperative
P.R.O.B.E. #2 The Devil of Winterborne
P.R.O.B.E. #3 Unnatural Selection
P.R.O.B.E. #4 Ghosts of Winterborne
Shakedown: Return of the Sontarans
The Stranger #1 Summoned By Shadows
The Stranger #2 More Than A Messiah
The Stranger #3 In Memory Alone
The Stranger #4 The Terror Game
The Stranger #5 Breach of Peace
The Stranger #6 Eye of the Beholder
Wartime

but there are several problems:
1. They appear to be degrading with age, as the last time I tried to watch Downtime or the P.R.O.B.E. series, they broke up into random frozen pixels after getting halfway through (or less).
2. I could never get the Mindgame or Stranger discs to play at all, leading me to believe that there's some form of systemic fault at the DVD burner's end.
3. I don't have any kind of DVD-ripping software.

I'll aska around, but I might know a guy in my global web of shadowy informants and unindicted co-conspirators who might have some in an uploadable format.

(Wartime was pretty lame, though. I wouldn't lose sleep over not seeing it. John "Sgt. Benton" Levene is a hella nice guy, I'm sure, but there's a reason that they never gave him many big speeches or emotional scenes.)

Test out your local free WiFi spots and see if they're 'torrent friendly' :) The 'All Bar One' franchise generally tend to be pretty open, unlike 'JD Wetherspoons' where only traffic via Port 80 is allowed via their own gateway.

I don't know much about equilibrium. It was submitted to be a Past Doctor Adventure and rejected. A few times. So the author just released it for free. You can download it from the author's blog but he doesn't really talk about it.

The real Holy Grail of unscanned Doctor Who books is Time's Champion. Famed Doctor Who author Craig Hinton wrote it and was rejected. Sometime after his death, his friend Chris McKeon finished it based off of their discussions and released it as a charity novel. That was only in 2008 and yet I've never seen a copy for sale at any price. Although, I guess that holds true for Equilibrium as well. Still...

Sadly That's not an option for me either, if I'm really desperate I can always try to download torrents when I take my PC to get it quarterly checkup at my Tech's office. Thanks for the tip though.

Have you tried unzipping and rezipping the files? Open a folder and go to tools>folder options>view tab>and uncheck the box for hide known file extensions. Rename .cbz to .zip and .cbr to .rar and unzip them. Then rezip them and change the file names accordingly. That's worked for me in the past.

My "hide known file extensions" box is already unchecked, though, so I don't know if that's a harbinger of futility to come. I deleted them when they wouldn't open, so I'll have to re-download them to see if that works, but i"ll let you know either way.

---------- Post added at 05:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:24 PM ----------

Update: Nope, still doesn't work. However, changing the name will let me extract the original jpeg files, and for the three DWM "Brief Encounter" one-page stories, I can turn them into PDFs easily. I already had the 9th Doctor strips collected in the DWM Special Edition Collected Ninth Doctor Comics, so I'm not as worried about them.

Sadly That's not an option for me either, if I'm really desperate I can always try to download torrents when I take my PC to get it quarterly checkup at my Tech's office. Thanks for the tip though.

My pleasure! I spent a few years doing a lot of driving round the country with 3G as my main 'net access, so became pretty used to finding the best free WiFi spots for large downloads.

<hr> The Incredible Hulk Presents Doctor Who (1989) 12 comics
Information only: If you want to check out The Hulk Presents Doctor Who stories, exactly half of them have been reprinted elsewhere. Unfortunately they're the weaker half. Once in a Lifetime (http://www.pagefillers.com/dwrg/csonce.htm) appeared in DWCC 21, Hunger from the Ends of Time! in DWM 157-158, War World! (http://www.pagefillers.com/dwrg/cswarw.htm) and Technical Hitch! (http://www.pagefillers.com/dwrg/cstech.htm) in DWCC 24 and finally A Switch in Time! (http://www.pagefillers.com/dwrg/csswit.htm) in DWCC 25. I adore Once in a Lifetime (http://www.pagefillers.com/dwrg/csonce.htm), but thereafter it wasn't until Who's That Girl! or so that the Hulk Presents stories hit their stride. Also most of the DWCC-reprinted stories look better in colour, which is something I don't often say about black-and-white art.

Overall, these stories are an unjustly overlooked bit of Doctor Who comics history. Many comic strips struggle not to be pointless with thirty or forty pages to play with, but The Incredible Hulk Presents did it repeatedly with [I]five. Its stories may be light-hearted kiddie fare, but I'm not being camp or post-ironic when I say that there's some genuinely impressive work buried away in here.

Yeah, 4share was having some technical problems a few days ago (files failed a few times). I'll switch those out. As for the 7th Doctor, as you can tell, I'm currently in the midst of putting the 6th Doctor in chronological order (hence the file names not being complete).

*edit* They downloaded just fine for me. Try again, maybe?

If you go back many pages to another one of my posts, I gave out a bunch of Rapidshare links that still work for the comics. And those have multiple scans from different sources (b&w, colorized, etc...). That's your best bet to fill in those holes. They'll also probably end up on this account as well.

oops, not cleared for publication.Permission granted.

If you do share this book it would really be appreciated if:

a) you can make a donation
b) keep the Charity Publication.txt file with your upload
c) put something in your description requesting future downloaders consider making a donation to either the British Heart Foundation or that of their own country

This book would not have been scanned without the realisation that an upload could continue to raise funds for charity. Please do the right thing.

This was a book where all the proceeds went to the Heart Foundation: The main author of the book, Craig Hinton, sadly passed away in 2006 from a heart attack. Please donate to your local version of this worthy charity if you download the book - even a small amount will do, but please show your support!.
Thanks!

I have the book version of Time's Champion, and let me say that it's a GREAT book! Remember, though, that Craig was the god of fanwank, and this is full of it. I say that in a good way! But if you don't like books that refer too much to the past or try to fit things into the continuity, then you'll hate this book. But if that's not you, and you're a fan of the Sixth Doctor and/or Craig's writing, then Time's Champion is a MUST!

And if you download it, please donate to a charity he'd like, ok? Even if it's just a little. Mooching off of a charity book is tacky!

Now, what was I looking for when I found this???

Oh, yeah.

"The Fires of Pompeii"
[When The Doctor or Donna talk to the Pompeiians, foreign phrases are not being translated into Latin]

Donna: What if I said something in actual Latin? Like, "Veni, vidi, vici"? My dad said that when he came back from football. If I said, "Veni, vidi, vici," to that lot, what would it sound like?
The Doctor: I'm not sure. You have to think up difficult questions, don't you?
Donna: I'm gonna try it!
Stallholder: A'ernoon, sweetheart. What can I get ya, my love?
Donna: Um, "Veni, vidi, vici."
Stallholder: Huh? Sorry? Me no a-speak Celtic. No can do, missy.
Donna: Yeah! How's he mean, Celtic?
The Doctor: Welsh. You sound Welsh. There we are. Learnt something.

Sorry, even with Google-translate the titles to difficult to recognize (and I also mean the titles in my native language en that of my neighboring country...) so sadly I have to give up on these :-(

Just a note, there are a few comics in my bunch that are major improvements quality-wise (I'm thinking of The Night Walkers, The World Shapers, The Life Bringer, etc... which are from other sources). Also, the IDW bunch is on my account, whereas those links don't have them all.

I agree with ffwho. I am finding it impossible to understand the links that are disguised in various languages.
I've tried but I simply can't work out what the titles are. Google translate tells me that they may be various languages, however it tells me that it is not sure as there is not enough to go on.
Surely this is not necessary, is it? Yes, it's is very clever disguising the links, however if regular, loyal members cannot understand them then perhaps it is defeating the purpose. Anyway, aren't the spoiler tags supposed protect links?
It is taking a lot of the fun and excitement out of my regular visits to the Forum, that's for sure.

Maybe we could come up with some sort of alpha numeric numbering system. For example, M152 could stand for monthly - title 152. Even if a human read M152 it wouldn't mean anything to them.

Spoiler tags DON'T protect links. Neither do the code tags. Logout and look through at the thread if you don't believe me.

The URL tag does hide a link unless you're registered and logged-in, though.

On the subject of the foreign language - I'm fine with it, but can see that in the long term it could cause more hassle for some than it's worth.

1. Just to be clear, you cannot 'hide' a link here. FFshrine uses SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Putting a link in this forum is like putting up a duck in a shooting gallery. If you want it to survive, you have to make the 'duck' look like it is not on the "Ten Most Wanted List". The use of coding, encryption, spoilers, tables, re-naming, etc... take advantage of killer 'bot weaknesses.

1a. Copy a line from your post here, plug it into any search engine and you'll see it at the top of the results list. In the preview description, make sure title and URL are NOT displayed together.

2. If you are using a machine translator, it has a better chance of picking the right language when you give it more words. Translate all the titles at once. Or just download the file, pdf's are tiny. All of them added all together take up less bandwidth space than one bad HD movie. <--- best answer.

But bot's don't care about spoiler/code/table tags - they look through the raw stream and not one that's been formatted by the browser.

Weighing in on the file-hiding debate, I wonder if search-bots can be programmed to search in other languages, so giving the links titles in Italian or German may not be hiding them for long.

I still swear by my "Reverse Double-X Encryption System", or "Esrever Ddoouubbllee-Xx Exnxcxrxyxpxtxixoxnx Metsys." The human brain fills in the pattern, but search bots hopefully can't, especially when cycling through what are essentially three different ciphers every three words.

For example, I'd show the first three Big Finish monthlies as follows:

Rotcod Wwhhoo BxFx1x: Eht Ssiirreennss oxfx Emit
Ddooccttoorr Wxhxox 2FB: Pphhaannttaassmmaaggoorriiaa
Dxoxcxtxoxrx Ohw BBFF33: Wxhxixsxpxexrxsx fo Tteerrrroorr

It's a little work, but I hope it's efffective and intuitive.

I have done the same, am about to start the 3rd Doctor (2 episodes left before regeneration). I have enjoyed the 2nd Doctor very much.

This may be blatantly obvious, but it seems as though the Doctor ages in reverse. The 1st Doctor was the oldest but the least knowledgeable. Matt Smith is the youngest Doctor but is able to control the Tardis better than all the previous Doctors. I haven't put too much thought into this, but it can't be coincidence.

I think it was more based on whoever played the part best when auditioning than looking for certain ages each time. It just so happens that on most occasions, the actor is younger. I highly doubt, though, that the next doctor after Matt Smith will be even younger :/

The producers did generally hirer a younger actor to play the doctor but it should be noted that Hartnell wore a wig to make him look older. He was supposed to be a stodgy grandpa. It was the sixties. Old white men were authority figures. As far as the Doctor's ability to control the Tardis, you'll recall he stole it while it was in for repairs. Or rather, it stole him. He couldn't control it worth beans until he had been stranded on Earth for a while and forced to make repairs. I'm sure the writers also enjoyed being able to put out a story where the Doctor could deliberately go somewhere.

I made a run through of DW a few years ago. I can't say I much liked the black and white Who although I do continue to buy the DVDs. Some of that was because so many of the episodes were recons but a lot of it was just slow sixties British sci-fi. There were some good stories but they would have worked better if they were shorter. That was also true of a lot of Pertwee's six parters but he had more charisma.

During my marathon (prompted by the "Cadmium2" podcast - now TheTimeVault podcast) I generally enjoyed most of the longer 1st/2nd Doctor stories, but found I utterly, utterly, loathed the early Pertwee era. Even with Pertwee (who was a great Doctor) I found the first two seasons just really dragged and never properly engaged me. There were some good stories (Inferno and The Daemons, for example) but it was S9 where I got back to properly enjoying it again.

(As an aside - I highly recommend TheTimeVault podcast as they review all of DW/Blakes 7/Hammer Films and other British Cult Classics.)

Well, as can be seen from my sig and avatar, I'm quite the Two/Jamie fangirl (though Ten was my first and is favorite Doctor, overall). I'm also a big fan of Four and Three. Favorite companions are Jamie, Rose, the Brig, Ian and Donna.

The War Games is my favorite Classic serial. Similarly, I tend towards the likes of The End of Time, Human Nature/The Family of Blood, Journey's End, Doomsday, Midnight, The Big Bang, etc... for NuWho (the emotional side of it). I'm also a big fan of serials like The Mind Robber, City of Death, The Talons of Weng-Chiang, The Invasion, The Curse of Peladon, The Dmons, The Green Death, The Aztecs, The Time Meddler, The Two Doctors, etc...

Favorite audios that I've listened to so far are The Glorious Revolution (it's basically Jamie's Father's Day), Prison in Space (it's hilarious partially because it was almost made) and the City of Spires quadrilogy. Frazer Hines does an amazing Second Doctor impression!

I've listened to quite a number of the recons, as well. I recommend the ones over at Dailymotion by recon_mission. The ones I've listened to/watched so far are The Highlanders, The Underwater Menace, The Macra Terror, The Evil of the Daleks and The Enemy of the World.

Interesting...knew they were going out...

Tenth Doctor David Tennant has married his long term partner Georgia Moffett at a ceremony in London.

The couple, who became engaged at the start of 2011, tied the knot on Friday evening at an undisclosed location, attended by close family and friends.

Georgia Moffett is the daughter of Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison. She played Jenny in the 2008 story The Doctor's Daughter.

The couple's first child, Olive, was born at the end of March.

So the Doctor's daughter married the Doctor's daughter...sweet!!!

Well, if you've seen The Wedding of River Song, you'll get the big joke about the eyepatches when you get to Inferno (Nicholas Courtney used to always tell his "...and they were all wearing eyepatches!" story).

I personally like the Pertwee era very much, though it's more serious than Troughton or T. Baker (though even then, it's really only the last series of Moffat's era that has lost the balance between zany and emotion for me--too much of the former, not enough of the latter). And for all the antics of Troughton, T. Baker and Tennant, they had some very powerful scenes to balance it. Now, Smith did not have this problem at all in series 5. For me, there was a tonal shift starting at about A Christmas Carol.

And Pertwee, of course, had plenty of his Venusian Aikido, gurning and washerwoman costumes beside his verbal sparring with the Brig (who does rather turn into a big teddy bear) and his mother henning of Jo (the end of The Green Death is a real stand-out). Season 7 is very much the 'serious' season, but it does feel a bit padded at times. Despite its extreme padding, which ironically is the part that the serial is known for (the alternate universe stuff), Inferno is one of the most highly rated stories of his tenure. And of course, The Silurians gives us the big Three vs. Brigadier morality showdown.

I love me some Briggy, so that's another reason to love the Pertwee era.

The '60s and '70s were a breeze (only a few hiccups like The Web Planet and Underworld) and incredibly well-done, IMO. The '80s are when it goes a bit downhill, but there are some gems.

As for audios, I tend to go straight to the ones with my favorites. Frazer Hines goes straight to the top of my must-listen list (my favorite), and increasingly I've been putting Anneke Wills up there (which is odd, as Wendy Padbury is my favorite Troughton girl on T.V.). The David Tennant NSAs also entice me (I really hope Big Finish gets the rights to him soon!). And I'd listen to Nicholas Courtney read the phone book, so that's a given. Due to the fact that the Classic Doctors that I really care about are the first 4 (and their companions), I tend to listen to a lot more of the Companion Chronicles, rather than the main line.

DrakeRavensmith
01-09-2012, 07:00 AM
You know the funny thing about Pertwee's stories being so serious (like what happens with the Silurians) is that he was hired because he so funny. Then they sat down to discuss the character and he said 'No, I want to play it straight.' I mean you get moments (the washerwoman) where you see that but you end up with more a sense that he's got a soft heart inside a brusk exterior. I always assumed that when Tom was hired it was with the explicit understanding he'd be funny. Which he excelled at. Pertwee is my second favorite classic Doctor and he really stands out in the role. Venusian akido (and lullabies, and poetry, and everything else!) alone will forever distinguish the way he played the character versus everybody else. I remember watching 'Honey I Shrunk the Kids' and upon hearing that he could only shrink stuff ask "Why doesn't he reverse the polarity?" Which is what they did of course and that always made me wonder if the writer was a fan. The only problem with his episodes were how bloated they were sometimes. Stretching a four parter into a six to save money hurt a few stories but I still love them.

I liked them all. The second Doctor, Patrick Troughton, was a little tough to follow. I didn't like any of the "re-constructions" - and that's much of his stewardship. The great thing about Doctor Who television shows is that most are classics - the more times you watch, they better they get.

And for those have built a Tardis, here's a papermodel K9 that was included in DOCTOR WHO ADVENTURES Magazine #3. Improved by http://www.huxter.org/dwfun/

http://i771.photobucket.com/albums/xx353/burn_eggroll/th_58b17991.jpgclick to enlarge ()
It builds up quite nicely. The picture is of my improved model. I removed thick, blue dotted lines that were to show kids where to bend the card on the printed body. However, I removed those and put in scoring marks outside the model, to make for a nicer model.

Here is a copy of it with my improvements. Score with a dulled knife or an out-of-ink ball-point pen along the thin pairs of lines that span parts of the model. Then cut out (with X-Acto knife or scissors), bend along the score dents, and glue any light blue areas.

Although I didn't include a score mark for it I also recommend scoring the tail in the middle along its entire length, and folding it, then folding it in half, and forming a diamond cross-section, gluing along the edges, flattening it near the end of the tail. Cut off the light-blue areas and glue it directly to the diamond shape I created on the butt. It looks much nicer.

Here's the altered paper model. Print this on 65 lb card stock on a color printer. This model is already set to the right DPI so it prints to a full 8.5x11 page.

I don't know who has scanned all the old "weekly", "monthly" and "magazines" but I am terribly impressed at the work they have done. The first issue I ever bought was issue 80, way back in 1983 when it was still Doctor Who Monthly. I continued to collect every single issue right up to 2007 when I finally stopped. The collection now resides in three large boxes and are very heavy, believe me.
I have frequently wished I had the whole lot scanned and on my computer, however the idea of beginning such a task was daunting.
Now, thanks to the kind posts of RayParker I am able to have my cake and eat it too, as it were. Also it is much easier to browse through and re-live old memories.
Thanks for the posts RayParker. I can't wait for the next batch.

Ouch. That sounds a bit tougher to take. OTOH, if I've made it through the first four and a half seasons, reconstructions included, I think I'm up to the task. (Seriously, that 15-minute job the BBC did for the missing Ice Warriors episode was an absolute godsend. Especially after the series of last-known-photos and scratchy audio that passed for Abominable Snowman reconstructions.)

Well i have finished all 765 episodes including reconstructions it took me about 7 or 8 months though i would like to see the newly found episodes though but anyways i missed the link for the children of seth so is there anyways i could get that...

:) In fairness it probably didn't help that I watched an entire story back-to-back rather than taking a break between episodes. The 'flaws' tend to stand-out more that way, I suppose.

For the missing episodes I did a combination of watching the better Recons (as in ones with not too many 'just telesnaps with the original sound') and listening to the BBC narrated ones. For a while I did think about doing a 'recon' job of my own combining the recons with the CDs but - well - I just couldn't be arsed in the end!

Thanks RayParker for another great post. Every cover is a brings a trip down memory lane.... the job I was doing, the flat I was living in, the friends I had at the time.
Incidentally, for anyone who is not familiar with the magazines, the regular 'Archive Feature' (which started in issue 180 if memory serves) is an outstanding piece of work. Extremely detailed and informative and well worth a look at. A perfect compliment to every story! It was my desire to own the entire series of archive features that kept me buying the magazine for many years, even when my interest had waned somewhat.
Thanks again RayParker.

Zoinks! That's a lot of dosh!

I did briefly consider going to the Big Finish Day but got really pee-d off at them for not answering the simple question of 'Is Barnaby Edwards Going?' - My sister fancies the living daylights out of him (despite me telling her that I'm 99% sure he's gay) and wanted to tag along to meet him. But as they flatly refused to confirm or not he was attending I cancelled my ticket in a fit of pique.

Judging by the podcast they did from the event it's probably a good job I didn't go - I''d've probably ended up punching Briggs! :) His dismissive attitude during it to questions from those that had paid to go really got my back up. There's something about him (and Richardson, too!) that I really don't like (despite him being a decent writer and director).

The last convention, I went to, was in Stockton on Tees, 120 quid to stay in the hotel, 80 quid for the 2/3 days, [extra for the auctions, books, DVD's, etc...] oh and the cost of the plane fare from Australia to get there :). I found that how you approached the speakers, usually was how they treated you. So I had a drink at the bar with Colin Baker, chatted with a few others, my wife went to lunch with one of her favourites [auction prize], but chatted with him again on the next day....people are people, 20 people asking the same thing over and over can get wearing.... Sometimes it pays just to get them alone to talk to them :)

Didn't see any skinheads, mostly drunkly staggering party goers at the nightclub - was at The Swan Hotel, next to the shopping centre at 1 end of the High Street... spent a bit of time in the Pound shop, the bakery and Iceland, walked past the Post Office around the corner to WH Smiths, to buy a DWM and back towards the ruined church for a Kerbab.... wasn't much to see. On the Sunday, went to the market, then got the train at Petersbough back to Bayswater(London).
[for those, that know Stockton :)]

The joy of the 'British' conventions, is the lack of the distance between audience and speakers, the 'retail' side is less important, it also allows the audience members to get a few momentos or at least a photo or two - but the conversations, with other fans can lead to, finding gems, such as video recordings of stageplays, or the odd fan audio /magazine/ booklet...things not always found in the mainstream for the collectors amongst us.

I probably averaged about 8 25min episodes a day. Some of them, I'll admit, did tend to drift into 'background noise' where I wasn't paying 100% attention. As I said - probably not the best way to watch them, but it did mean that The Good were REALLY Good and The Bad were REALLY Bad.

It was fun, but if I ever did it again I'd pace myself a lot better.

zorgon23
01-13-2012, 03:01 AM
Zorgon-- every episode in just eight months? That's kind of stunning. This makes me a little less leery of upcoming seasons. After nearly a year I'm just starting the season five serial Enemy of the World. (The point in the series I'm starting to think of as "Recon Alley.") I'm taking in something like two or three episodes a week, which makes the rougher patches quite a bit easier to take, not to mention the recons. And I haven't skipped a one. Still, words can't express how relieved I was by that awesome BBC recap of the missing Ice Warriors episodes. Yeah, I can imagine getting pretty frustrated trying to take in a serial in just one or two sittings.

(Also, sorry about the occasional double posts. I'm at a loss. Switching browsers didn't seem to help, but I can't figure out what stupid thing I'm undoubtedly doing.)
well i was watching them on Saturday and was watching 2-3 serials a week at first then i skipped a few i had seen already so i guess i can say it did take longer but most every episode in 8 months isnt bad and i agree with nobber there i did drift in and out some with the kind of boring ones with those you just listen to them while playing freecell or solitare that keeps it going. but it is well worth it when it is all over then you know which ones are the best. I wish they could fine more of the celestial toymaker myself one of my favorites but now i am just rambling.

Wonder what order they recorded these in? In this Tom seems a bit, for want of a better word, uptight. Like he's not fully relaxed.

That's not to say it's A Bad Thing.

He's not the more fey Doctor that he portrayed in the AudioGo series, and yet he's not the 'tea time' Doctor, either. It's like there's a bit of a (again, if you'll excuse the expression) a bit of a fight between Tom just wanting to act it as he is NOW and Briggs trying to direct it for him as he was THEN. It'll be interesting to hear how the next few pan out.

But either way for now - and time will tell all - that was hell of a lot of fun.

Strictly speaking, Campaign was originally released as a charity novel. Unlike Time's Champion however, the author has since made it available for free to everyone who wants it.

Campaign - TARDIS Index File, the Doctor Who Wiki (http://www.tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Campaign)

It also couldn't hurt to send an email to the New Zealand outfit thanking them for all of the hard work they put into making the novelizations in the first place.

In the book itself (both the print book and the download version, the author of Campaign does actually ask that if you enjoyed it to send off a small donation to the charity.

Be warned, it's a very challenging book. If you like your Who straightforward, it's not the book for you. But it's also a rewarding read, too. Reviews were all across the board, from unreadable and pretentious to brilliant and daring. (Personally, I put it somewhere in the middle.) Still, it's easy to see why BBC Books rejected it. It doesn't even remotely resemble the book that they commissioned. Also, if you're interested in the behind the scenes of what happened with it, the extensive afterward goes into extreme detail about it.

Is this the version with the extensive afterward or the even more extensive afterward, including tons of full e-mails? I have the book version, which has the one that's edited down somewhat. He released the version with the full afterward online, but I never bothered to get it.

What I'd actually love to see someday is the actual book he was originally commissioned to write. He has several breakdowns of it in the afterward, and it seems like a really interesting book! I doubt it would ever happen, though.

Campaign reminded me of Alfred Bester's 50s sci-fi novel The Stars My Destination...

Particularly in the way the layout and text becomes part of the story. I've also heard it described as the The Edge of Destruction on acid, which seems pretty accurate, too.

The Stars My Destination (including an introduction by Neil Gaiman) can be found online here:

The files are fine. It's was either
a. temporary Megaupload issue
b. you don't know how to extract a zip file
c. you are not using a m4b player.

agghhh... tutorial, where's the zip tutorial? Yes, I know Windows says it can open zip files, not really - depends on what's in the file. If Windows cannot open the file, it says there is no file. See, it's not you, Windows lies.

I like
#1. 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) (totally free)
#2. WinRAR (http://www.win-rar.com/)
#3. PowerArchiver (http://www.powerarchiver.com/) (the most universally powerful)

Now where's the tutorial?
What do I know, turns out I've been doing it the hard way... Now, if I could only find some simple directions for the rest of you.

Ah, gonna wing it...
for Windows

Install 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/)
Re-boot system
download file > Right click file > select 7-zip > extract here* > enter password > ok
Click new file > select player (VLC or that Mac thingy)

*you will see "extract here" in first right-click menu - not that one - use the one in 7-zip (or WinRar, or anything but the Windows default).

Of course you can ask!

Take it they're CBR / CBZ files? Then google 'Comic Reader' for your operating-system of choice. I use 'Jomic' on OSX.

GonVisor has a built-in extractor! It also has an extractor where one can just pull out an individual page or just a certain range of pages (good if you're pulling out the comic from the magazine). No need to do any renaming!

I don't know if this has already been mentioned but I've just found some rather good Fan audio productions at 'www.giantgnome.com'. They go under the title of Legends of Doctor Who. I've only listened to a couple and they are not bad.
The site also features other Fan made audios including Star Trek.

Well that's annoying!! Forked out 1.79 each the other day for the 'The Minister Of Chance' series on iTunes, and just discovered as I was about to link to the page for background that I could have got them free as podcasts now! Grrr!!! Well, they were worth the money. Sort of. Too short. Didn't really wind up the story. Sound-scape not quite up to BF/GA standards. Sort of 'not quite the sum of all the parts'. Some very good performances, though.

Ho hum. These should keep people going until the latest stories surface.

If "they were worth the money", then why complain? These are literally completely funded by the listeners. Up until Wednesday, the were directly charging a very small sum for the episodes. They've decided that to try to get more people to try them out that they would give the episodes away as podcasts. But they're still politely asking for donations if you enjoyed them, which you have said that you did.

Yes, they're you said that they're shorter with soundscapes not quite up to Big Finish standards. But they were also about one fifth of the cost for a story 1/2 the length. You're clearly enjoying them enough to look forward to the next ones. So why would you feel bad about paying so little to support them? Less than the cost of a cup of coffee doesn't seem like too much to pay for a decent professionally made sci-fi drama.

I think that it's important that we, as Doctor Who and sci-fi fans, support the smaller companies that are making great stories for us. You don't want to pay for the overpriced DVD's from the BBC of shows you've already watched for free on television? (Or for those in the UK, who've already paid for them with your licence fee?) I can understand that.

But when small companies like the Minister of Chance people and Big Finish come around, it's important to financially support them when they're doing good work for us, and when we can afford it. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it helps insure that they will be able to afford to keep making them for us. Most of us would be very sad to lose our monthly fixes of great Doctor Who stories that Big Finish give us.

I recently figured out that in a few months, Big Finish will have put out 500 CD's worth of new Doctor Who stories. And that's only counting the official Doctor Who stories with the Doctor in them. (Although it does count the stage plays and unbounds.) If you add the various spinoffs, that's another 150 or so CD's worth. (Still nearly half of that if you don't count the Bernice Summerfield stories.) If you stayed up all night and did nothing but listen to Big Finish audio plays, it would take you nearly an entire month to get through all of them. And a lot of us have listened to all of them, or nearly all of them, without ever paying them anything for all of their hard work.

Yes, I understand that the Big Finish audios are quite expensive compared to buying some sci-fi, like seasons of a show on DVD. And that most of us can't afford to buy everything they put out. (I know I can't!) As a small company with a limited customer base, their prices are higher than they should have to be. (It's a lot easier to release something cheaply on DVD when you have a huge customer base to spread the costs out on, especially if the cost is already paid for by a theatrical movie release or a television showing!) But we should still try to support them however much we can.

Subscribe to ONE of the ranges for 6 months or a year. If you can't afford that, at least buy a few releases every year. You may not be one of the important subscribers who "get more at bigfinish.com", but you're still helping to support them and to keep them making new Who stories!

Big Finish is trying a pricing experiment later this year. They're releasing a set of special releases at a lower cost, including two Sixth Doctor stories for only 1 dollar/pound/euro each. And several box sets, one continuing the Eighth Doctor's story after the tragedies of To the Death, and one bringing back fan-favoirites UNIT and Klein. These are all specially priced to try to see if a lower price will attract enough customers to lower their prices for everyone. They've specifically said that they are targeting these offers at the people who are illegally downloading thei stories, to see if we'll support them if they lower their prices. Let's show them that we will. Even if you can't aford the box sets, surely you can afford the Sixth Doctor specials at only one dollar/pound/euro, right? If they get the same number of customers at that vastly reduced price, then we'll have proven to them that we'll never support them, and only care about getting whatever we can for free. But I think we're better than that.

And just to be clear, I'm in no way affiliated with Big Finish, other than as a fan. I certainly can't afford to pay for all of their output, but I do try to support them when I can. For the many hours of enjoyment they've given me, I try to show them my gratitude with support when I can. And that includes helping to keep Colin, Tom and all of the other actors from the show working, not to mention the brilliant writers, directors, and the rest.

I think you may have completely miss-understood the intent of my post. Or I didn't make my intent clear. Either way ... my post was meant to be tongue-in-cheek and poking fun at myself for not realising that they were now podcasts. Had been thinking about getting them for a while and suddenly finding myself with a 5 iTunes card I thought I finally would. I certainly don't begrudge paying for them, if that's what you think (or would like to believe), but it would have been (how shall I phrase this...?) ... it would have been nice to know earlier I could have legitimately gotten them for free before I paid for them.

VFM-wise ... Actually. That's a very good point. Which I think boils down to I'd rather they'd released a proper 2CD story like BF or Cosmic Hobo at a 'fuller' price that had a proper beginning/middle/end story. These two episodes are a bit 'unsatisfying' on their own and their value lessened because of it.

I hope that makes sense.

Obviously you'll have to take my word for this, but I had intended to say that I recommend people get them from iTunes - that's why I went looking for the series background link - but in my distraction over the podcast-y-ness I do appear to have missed that bit, after-all.

I read in one of the news stories that it took two years for the Justice Department to come crashing down on them. The timing with the internet protest the day before is suspect but I don't think we'll have to ever worry about every site going down at the same time (unless sopa/pipa are passed) simply because it takes so long for the wheels of 'justice' to turn.

MegaUpload is dead. How about MultiUpload which includes FileSonic and Mediafire?

Not a bad idea. Used it myself a few times. Their uploader program is a bit clunky, but does the work. I've heard a few rumours that it's spyware, but as I run it sandboxed in a VM (I'm a Mac user and it's a Windoze prog) it can spy as much as it wants! :)

But, yeah, as Wall1885 says, it's a bit of a bugger for those that have been using it legitimately. Moral of the story? For personal backups blank DVDs and small USB sticks are pretty cheap and can be stored 'off site' easily.

Always remember to make two copies! :)

And, if you can, investigate using QuickPar - I had a load of photo CDs that got corrupted as I, stupidly, left them next to a window that got VERY warm. But I'd also 'parred' them so managed to get back about 90% of them.

Filesonic dead. Bum!!!!

---------- Post added at 07:53 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:50 AM ----------

Filesonic only to share your own files from one computer to another. Yippee!!! :-(

---------- Post added at 07:55 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:53 AM ----------

"Filesonic believes the timing is right to take an even more proactive approach against copyright infringement, as the amount of content on the Internet continues to grow, and as its products become victim to abuse by copyright infringers. Given the volume of data on our servers, we went looking for an effective method of checking every media or compressed file uploaded and chose Vobile's vCloud9 as the most effective solution to meet that criteria. Filesonic's implementation of vCloud9 is one of many steps our company has undertaken to deal with copyright infringement, and we look forward to having vCloud9 as part of our arsenal," said Sara Parr, Communications Manager at Filesonic.

"Video fingerprinting technology such as Vobile's is an established, tested and widely adopted way for sites that allow user uploads to prevent the unauthorized distribution of copyrighted content. In this particular case, we look forward to seeing Filesonic implement Vobile's vCloud9 effectively and to more sites and services using effective filtering tools," said Ronald Wheeler, Senior Vice President, Content Protection, Fox Entertainment Group, Inc.

Now if they take away Mediafire and Rapidshare...I won't need to share anymore. All are scared, hence Filesonic isn't shut down - but may as well be. By changing how they operate now, it avoids poss fines to the owners.

Latest News...

While customers of Megaupload, both legitimate and otherwise, try to figure out where to turn next, other file sharing companies are ready to step up to fill in the gaps—at least for legal uses. And RapidShare, the next largest "digital locker" service, claims to be unconcerned about the MegaUpload case's precedent. But the case could have a broad impact on companies that offer storage as part of their services, depending on the outcome.

"We're not concerned or scared about the raid," Daniel Raimer, a spokesperson for RapidShare, told Ars in a phone interview. "File hosting itself is a legitimate business."

If a manager of a bank got arrested for money laundering, he said, it wouldn't lead to the shut-down of all banks. And he said Microsoft's SkyDrive and other cloud data storage and backup services," from a technical standpoint are doing what we do."

In a statement, RapidShare's CEO Alexandra Zwingli enumerated the ways in which RapidShare is different from Megaupload, pointing out first that RapidShare is set up in a much more transparent way than the Mega empire, and under the actual names of its founders. "RapidShare AG was founded in Switzerland and in fact, it was always located at the address given in the company details and was always run under real names without any anonymous intermediate businesses. The radical measures against Megaupload were apparently required since the situation there had been totally different."

Zwingli said RapidShare is "an absolutely legal service—like Swisscom or YouTube", with services comparable to Dropbox, and doesn't offer a rewards system like Megaupload did for frequently downloaded files. "We act rigidly against copyright infringement," Zwingli asserted, and added that the company has "established a constructive dialogue with politics and society in the United States and in other countries."

Raimer said the MegaUpload raid wasn't about file sharing itself, but the alleged criminal actions of the company's staff. "As far as I can tell, the allegations are based on their closed eyes to the pirate scene, and that they financially supported (pirates) and uploaded infringing content themselves. If they turn out to be true, then law enforcement had to go this way."

RapidShare has designated a Digital Millennium Copyright Act agent to deal with takedown requests, Raimer said.

Frank Kenney, the vice president of global strategy for Ipswitch File Transfer (a company that provides a managed file transfer service for corporate users) and former analyst at Gartner, told Ars that he believes that the Megaupload case will create issues for companies like RapidShare—and anyone else who offers online storage as part of their services. "The question will be," he said, "how on the hook are these companies because they don't look at what their customers upload or download?" He said that the impact of the Megaupload case may be further reaching than SOPA and PIPA may have been if they had been enacted.

While sites such as RapidShare and FileServe offer unlimited storage and high-speed downloads, Dropbox and other companies more focused on point-to-point file sharing and synchronization discourage using their services for piracy by charging large premium rates for bigger storage (about $200 a year for 100 gigabytes, and $795 a year for their unlimited "team" account) and by throttling the amount of bandwidth allowed for downloads of files. But Kenney said DropBox and cloud backup services like Carbonite could still find themselves forced to deal with issues over content.

Kenney also pointed out that among the alleged pirated content on Megaupload, there were likely significant amounts of corporate content being shared for legitimate reasons that is now lost or exposed by government seizure. Of course, Kenney's company is in a position to benefit from those concerns. Ipswitch's product is intended to replace services like Dropbox for corporate use, by allowing companies to host it themselves and add features like data loss prevention and other safeguards to prevent the accidental leakage of sensitive data by employees.

Yeah, I know. It's getting annoying. I'm suspecting the uploader has never uploaded a torrent before, and ergo has failed to realize that he needs to provide the initial seeding in order for other people to get it... :(

Whoo - did I miss something? Been kind of busy so only checking in on erratic basis.
Someone posted this month's 6th with a certain mad scientist story on a certain unnamed torrent site, and the torrent got screwed up royally. My suspicions why that happened is because they had never uploaded a torrent before. Ergo, they failed to realize they needed to seed for some time to create an initial seeding point for the others to glean from.

I would get too worried, unless you have an account with them which is a real pain, I'd imagine. As things stand, I imagine sites in Eastern Europe will eventually take on the lion's share of the business, and of course, Rapidshare in Switerland will grow to become the premier download site. Which is annoying considering their contempt for premium members. Still 2shared looks like it is still up. Although I don't know how long the files stay up uploaded by non-paying customers.

It's slightly worrying (though hardly surprising) that the US government is more concerned with shutting down file sharing websites than shutting down Guantanamo Bay.

And now the real reason for Megaupload closing down...Interesting...Thanks to the original poster for this...

Why was MegaUpload really shut down?

In December of 2011, just weeks before the takedown, Digital Music News reported on something new that the creators of #Megaupload were about to unroll. Something that would rock the music industry to its core. (Digital Music News - MegaUpload Is Now Launching a Music Service Called MegaBox... (http://goo.gl/A7wUZ))

I present to you... MegaBox. MegaBox was going to be an alternative music store that was entirely cloud-based and offered artists a better money-making opportunity than they would get with any record label.

"UMG knows that we are going to compete with them via our own music venture called Megabox.com, a site that will soon allow artists to sell their creations directly to consumers while allowing artists to keep 90 percent of earnings," MegaUpload founder Kim 'Dotcom' Schmitz told Torrentfreak

Not only did they plan on allowing artists to keep 90% of their earnings on songs that they sold, they wanted to pay them for songs they let users download for free.

"We have a solution called the Megakey that will allow artists to earn income from users who download music for free," Dotcom outlined. "Yes that's right, we will pay artists even for free downloads. The Megakey business model has been tested with over a million users and it works."

That's crazy. So they shut down Megaupload on some trumped up "pirate ring" charge to prevent them from implementing something that allows artist to get more money for their hard work, even if it's downloaded for free? That's a load of bullshit... :(

On a lighter note. Sort of.

BF have just released details for the next Stargate audios Big Finish - Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis Season 3 (http://www.bigfinish.com/Stargate-SG-1-Season-3)

WTF is the point of releasing it as 2 x 3xCD parts? Why the heck not just release it as one full box-set? Do they really expect people to get Part Two without previously getting Part One? Some-times the mind just really ... boggles ...

* * * * *

(because I didn't want to double post.)

So, since I've pretty well filled in what holes I could with my DWM comics, and since I've ssooo been wanting more 8th Doctor, I did a bit of sniffing around.
Some time back I managed, by pure dumb luck, find, online the 8th Doctor story 'Camera Obscura'. It was pretty darned good, I have to admit. Then I got distracted with the TV series and comics and life.com
Well, with all of the server hosts changing and shutting down and heaven only knows what next, I went on an 8th Doctor Book hunt. I know I'd never be able to find even a quarter of these offline here in the States, but online, and doing a couple day's worth of hunting, I share my findings with you guys. (Even though I was only hunting for 8th Doctor stories, I did find some, especially older ones, for the other Doctors, not just 9, Ten, and 11.)
DL and back up at your leisure because heaven only knows how long they'll stay up before POOF! and they'll be gone. :(
