Have been reading some interesting thoughts here on the 8th medic movie, how some people liked it and others not so much. I didn't mind it at all but the one thing which would have really killed the film for me was an idea being floated around that TB and NOT SMC was going to be the medic in the blue box at the start of the film, simply because Americans would recognise TB and be able to connect to the character more, fortunately one of the producers on the show was an ardent classic fan and insisted it be 7th starting the film to help keep continuity, thank god they did...

Actually IMO having Sly there is one of the big problems with the movie

No disrespect to Sly himself (although maybe the gurning in the morgue was a bit....)
it's more that the first 20 or 30 mins are spent explaining what is a fairly out-there idea of regen.
the audience (and remember this was to try and get the uninitiated yanks into the show) were left asking, "but I thought he was the....? whats going on?"

Compare it to how CE was introduced.

I appreciate, what you are saying but as a purist I am delighted SMC was there, even though he is my least favorite medic, it keeps the continuity and helped me accept paul
I found a article about the tb to pmg regen, it's mentioned at the bottom of the piece. Doctor Who (TV story) - Tardis Data Core, the Doctor Who Wiki (http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Doctor_Who_(TV_story))

You know. I was kinda thinking, maybe people should actually refrain from asking for brand new releases about an hour after then have come out....
I know you all want them, and you all know they will appear, theres no need to ask for them, and with respect it hardly keeps it "under the radar" when there is a bloody great quote balloon above it, saying what it is! lol
IF we are being watched, thanks to certain links being posted on various sites, its kind of a massive red flag to the powers that be, and puts any potential person, who may for instance, have it, in the firing line!

Everyone knows the usual suspects on here, just wait and see if they post, and if they do, hit the usual button to see if there is an invisible enemy crawling around!

curse you Sylv for being in it! oh the missed musings and debates we could of had, if you had not gone and made it all so straightforward!

A thought I had a couple days ago, when 7 found out that he was predestined to sleep with Benny, he resented his futureself so much that he put off his regeneration for as long as damn possible, on the off chance that she might accidentally shtupp him by mistake under the wire.

A thought I had a while back. Did you notice all the Gallifreyan iconography in 7's TARDIS in the movie? It's like his patriotism has to be proved and accounted for by a political officer holding a choke-chain to his throat. As if he's on the clock and working for the council or the CIA, which explains why he was such an errand boy to fetch the Master's remains from Skaro. So he's either as retired as he looks inside the protection of Gallifrey, or awaiting orders.

Sorry, no. I saw it posted on GB as response to the rumour they had cast John Hurt to be 8 instead of P.McG in the 50th. I had figured the kick was staged at the LC offices maybe, or for DWM, or summat. If it's fake, it totally fooled me LOL.

Surely :-) Naught wrong with that. Just sad for me to see one of my favorites in DW fandom rolled under a bus :-( Won't be the last time, though: the EDAs are already a fading footnote, and Paul will eventually want to stop the LC plays.

Late late reply to this, but since I couldn't find anyone giving the answer, I thought I'd do it. I'm 99% sure the gif was made from a scene in a show he did called Tripping Over. (Doing this just off the top of my head, hence 99% rather than completely sure.)

Also, yes, it is really sad to see people discounting Paul like they do. He has been and continues to be a great Medic, and is absolutely canon, as shown by being put in the lineup of Medics not once, not twice, but FOUR TIMES in the course of the new show. (Almost said three times, then I remembered the s7 finale.) The TV movie might have been poorly written, but he's the Eighth Medic. End of. If we discounted Medics because of poor writing, we'd be in trouble.

Great divergent arc stories from 8 (IMHO):

Scherzo, The Natural History of Fear, The Last, Caerdroia. The rest I could firmly do without, especially that final, excruciatingly boring one (Next Life?) that ran to three discs. Overall, a good idea badly illustrated and handled.

It can definitely replace realplayer & divx. Possibly you should keep veoh if you use it to stream or grab video from websites (vlc can stream but I've found it a bit temperamental).

Ours used to have a pretty good cd collection, but that seems to have been scaled back (at least it had last time I was there). They will try and order in any cds/dvds but it's very haphazard and they're not even all that reliable when trying to order actual books - that was why I pretty much stopped using them. I bought a Kindle a while back and now just dl anything I want to read.

check out The Ultimate eBook Library (TUEBL.ca) they've got a ton of ebooks, but they're all in ePub format.

Talking about local Libraries, sadly they only have 3 medic books and that is it. I will be changing that though, I am a volunteer there during the week and will be requesting that they buy a lot more. I do enjoy physical books, though I may be old fashioned in that. I personally think that certain person who will not be named did not do anything he said he reacted badly and said things he did not mean to say, I have done that to many time to count but have learned to keep my mouth shut and let things pass my, well for the most part anyways

i work in a library, we don't do ebooks, and we have NO DW stuff, NONE...my co-worker/gf and i have been trying to change that for the past five months. the boss finally broke down and let us do a DW display of our own merchandise last month, and we get to do another in Nov, but a no go as of yet on getting books for the library.

Herro folks, I got very drunk last night and ended up buying the recent audiobook of the 3rd medic's "Celestial body of the Pepperpots" (read by yer man who brought back the Ice Warriors to the TV series). I have it all uploaded for anyone who wants it but I've forgotten how to post links in a suitably concealed fashion. If someone could refresh my memory....?

FYI...

A premium sendspace account, that you pay good money for in theory, has an 8 gig daily data cap.

If everyone in the world tries to use the same rapid8 sendspace account, that 8 gig datacap is going to flitter away lickity split.

Which is why I got to seem like a nonce last night championing bad ideas.

I'm watching the first episode of the Richard Pryor Show.

The first sketch is Richard as the bartender at the Starwars Cantina serving all the monster/aliens and making fun of their appearance and alien attitudes. Somehow George Lucas must have signed off on letting Richard use wardrobe/props from the set because the aliens are terribly authentic.

So fricking funny.

149 is "robotfear" what you downloaded might be the second disk, but there is no freebie that comes with that episode. cd1 starts with some cowboy guitar music and a sum up of Robots of death. Cd2 starts with credit music and then a robot saying "I can now confirm that all activated robots have been destroyed".

No sir.

You go into the clockwork (properties maybe?) of your unraring widget and check a check box that says "keep incomplete files" after which you can unrar the the first rar of 8, for example, or any rar of the 8, still for the same example, and see what's inside the bugger and they stay manifest. No more vanishing because the next part of the rar is missing.

If you can't find the check box to check, try downloading/installing "7zip" as an alternative zip widget, which is free, and it's default setting is to keep incomplete files. This is handy if there are several episodes of "X" inside a large rar or many rars, I had a devil of a time getting all of the Flintstones last month, or even if one of the rars in the collection fails, or is dead or can't be found.

Of course usually when you're previewing like this, there's always an "episode" or two that's cut unevenly in half where one half is in the first rar and the next half is in the second rar, but later when you have finally got on top of everything, you can unrar the complete set all over again from first principles, and never no mind.

If you've got some glasses kicking around the 3D is pretty impressive.

OK, now I am far far behind on my LC audio.

I just finished H*use of Bloo Fire and determined to get up to date before the 1963 trilogy this year. Get about 1.5 a week through driving to work and back. Bit OCD so need to listen to the CDs in order. I have already listened to the McGann stories just because I am a bit 8 obsessed.

But I need a break from the main range, my head is a bit done in at the moment after non stop. But it can't be a big break! I am torn between CM and Without Grace. Any preferences round here? Any reasons to avoid either?

This is what I learnt from Medic Unbound... UNIT is not clever.

They are more than willing enough to use nuclear weapons if the situation calls for it.

I want to hear those stories, where there's no magic trick...

An early episode of Buffy...

Xander "But you've never fought a creature like this before, you don't know it's weaknesses, it's vulnerabilities, how are you going to kill it?"

Buffy "I was thinking about using "violence"."

What's wrong with the DVD order?

List of Space: 1999 episodes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Space:_1999_episodes#Episodes)

Once you finish that there's a Youtube movie, 10 minutes long starring one of the minor cast, she explains in a final log entry, on a recreation of the set, the final fate of the crew and the moon.

jlm1883

Sapphire and Steele is very, very British.

They played it on TV in NZ in the 70s, 80s and 90s, back when TV used to be in air tight steel canisters that circled the globe, so it must have stopped off in Oz for a while?

They also rerun it on Sky for a while, which I'm sure we share we you and parts of Malaysia.

You were probably doing more important things at the time like finding girls or raising children.

What a wonderful comment! It was a mind-blowing show at the time. The attention to detail in a show of this type and time was unheard of, and the naturalistic performances of the actors really enhances the experience. I felt it was halfway between 2001 A Space Odyssey and Star Trek.

The show descended into familiar scifi show territory in the second season, but it's good to know that it's the first season that is influencing the remake series Space 2099.

Interesting....
right up to the point he says they were originally broadcast by the Beeb....

Have to say I never got into S1999, it seemed to have all the usual failings of most ITV production.
Money spent on big stars and spectacle rather than big ideas.
Most of theses bad influences (to me at least) can be put down to the influence of Lew Grade and his desperation for success in the american market. Brit TV works best when made for British sensibilities.
The best shows from his stable are the ones where he had little influence (Muppet Show, The Prisoner).

But of course his biggest crime in television was helping the career of his nephew......

Yep Slasher Grade should never have been allowed into TV management. He has demonstrated very little aptitude for the career and seemed to ride on Lew's coat tails

I spent 10 years growing up in the North West of Western Australia and we only had one channel (from 1977 - 1987). So I was quite limited for a while. Then I had the end of school, study and yes, finding a girl, getting married and kids. I had heard of it mentioned - wasn't until I got the internet I could finally check it out

I quite enjoy Space 1999. I have a good memory of watching it before we left the UK to live in Australia. I thought it had pretty good production qualities but, then again, most Gerry Anderson stuff does. Didn't ITV show Space 1999?

Yes it did...

On Granada where I lived.

There was very little SciFi in those days. Thank god for Lew Grade for what there was.

To a dirty foreigner all British TV broadcast in Britain is BBC. It's a speech impediment. Just roll with it. They'll never learn, and you'll go coarse trying to civilize them.

Independently while watching DW City of Death, and season 2 of Space 1999, I rushed to IMDB to figure out who this magnificent woman "is".

It's a fantastic album. Alternating it and the latest from Editors.

OMD's latest took a while to click with me (all the 'experimental' pieces, I think), but I really like it now - not quite up to the standard of History of Modern, but still one of the best 'comebacks' of recent times. Sure a lot of the new songs are often VERY reminiscent of the old ones, but they're still great!

My copy of the new Editors album (deluxe, of couse!) hasn't arrived yet, but I can't wait - superb band. Great memories of putting In This Light... on for the first time driving through the outskirts of Auckland in twilight on my last night in New Zealand, and just being blown way by how perfect it was at that moment...

Just starting with the new one from These New Puritans (who? you all cry - and fair enough), a difficult band to grasp at first, but Soooo worth it when it clicks. Their 'Hidden' was one of the best albums of the last decade to me...

Wow. How's THAT for off topic??!! ;)

Hey, I don't mind. I love music too. At least I've got some ideas for new music. I just listened to History of Modern then and have put on English Electric. "I'd like a new house, and a robot wife" Lol. Got some great songs on there. I'll have to check out the other stuff.

Speaking as a 'dirty foreigner' (Australian from a Dutch family), and a lifetime dedicated anglo(or brito-)phile, I alway try to correct such imperfections in my fellow aliens, but to little or no avail, because, as heretical as it sounds, they JUST DON'T CARE!!!! Mind you, most people at my workplace seem to think The Tudors & Downton Abbey are pristine examples of historical accuracy... :D

It's the same with casual Medic watchers, it doesn't matter how big a fan you are, if you disagree about something, they're right and you're wrong, no matter how much proof you have, coz their memories CAN'T POSSIBLY be wrong!! My own older brother is a case in point: it doesn't matter that I'm a hardcore fan of some 30-odd years who's seen and heard everything that survives - The Second Medic 'died' fighting both the Delaks & Cidermen, and he's right no matter what I say, cause he watched it at the time...

Yeah, not one of their best. There's another one from later in their run that never aired in Oz called "Hype Pressure" which is, to me, much funnier. Maybe it's because I'm Australian, and grew up in the 70s/80s, but the Goodies is one of my favourite programmes of all time, and still makes me crack up, so many years and watches later. My partner still has a sticker released by the ABC in the late 70s that proudly boasts "WE'VE GOT THE GOODIES AND DOCTOR WHO!!" Aaah, great days, great days...

I wish they'd get off their arses and release more dvds - season releases would be good... (I'd also love to see some more Thames-era Kenny Everett stuff released - another burst of brilliant childhood nostalgia...)

Totally agree with you mate. The Goodies and Keeny Everett - those were good days on the ABC! I'll have to ask my friend what the deal is (he's in contact with all the Goodies' members). I think it's just the BBC's attitude though. They are very perplexed how they've been treated by the Beeb over the years.

Pretty sure he's straight...

EDIT: Yep, just checked, married with two kids (I know that's no surety, but...) The character, though? Definitely bi-sexual!! ;D

I used to get told I looked like him when I was younger. I took it as a compliment (although I wished I looked more like Davison)...

There were so many cuts in Oz Goodies episodes that sometimes seeing the uncut version is a revelation. I never knew there was so much nudity in the first few series!! Kids show, my arse!!

The most obvious cut at the time was in Dodonuts where the sound completely dropped out at the appropriate moment when Bill yells "One Bloody Sausage!!" at the dodo...

It's actually Network who've been releasing the DVDs, not the BBC, and they can be pretty slow, but it's been about 3-4 years at least since the last one, and I want more, now, dammit!! I have every episode recorded, but it's one of those shows I want on OFFICIAL dvds. I honestly think Goodies is my second favourite series to Medic What. Possibly sad, but true... :)

Thrylling Adventore Hour!

The Thrilling Adventure Hour (http://tinyurl.com/yeyvsnu)

From wiki ...

Thrilling Adventure Hour - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://tinyurl.com/p4vr6e5)

A staged production in the style of old time radio that is held monthly at the Coronet Theatre. The show has been running since March 2005.[1] It is live audio theater. Each episode features three non-serialized segments as well as songs and commercials from fictional sponsors. The show is written by Ben Acker and Ben Blacker and directed by Aaron Ginsburg. The show's original songs are written by Acker & Blacker with composer and band leader Andy Paley.

Highly recommended!

I just saw the first episode of Space: 1999. It was like watching a movie rather then a tv program, it just blew my mind!!!!!
Does anyone have that list that more accurately arranges the series?

Little late to this conversation, but I've had a bit of a weird weekend! Worrking too bloody hard as usual for too little financial rmuneration again...

Anyway, this guy has a great site with a suggested running order that makes a lot of sense:

Space: 1999 - Episodes of the first series (http://www.eyespider.freeserve.co.uk/space/one/index.php)

Main:
Space: 1999 - a personal view by Andrew Kearley (http://www.eyespider.freeserve.co.uk/space/content.html)

1999 is great, especially the first season, which is very moody, philosophical and atmospheric. They were really trying to do something different and I think it's underappreciated. The second season is almost an entirely different show - or a show reimagined to be something else entirely, which deforms it. In a way, it has its own pleasures (i.e. yes, Maya), but even now, I wish they'd continued in the vein of the first season and just shored up the aspects that were seen to be lacking - a little humour never goes amiss. But they ended up going so far in a different direction it lost almost any credibility it had. And you had to read the whole show as a kind of fable, or even parable - even as a kid, I knew some of the science was ludicrous - which didn't stop my enjoyment of it one bit. It's immense in scope and ambition and really reaches for a deeper sensibility, a lot of which was down to Johnny Byrne (he who wrote Keeper of Traken amongst others for our beloved medic) and Chris Penfold, excellent writers with poetic sensibilities, both. Both were largely absent from season 2, natch.

All I've seen of the show was the first-season MST3k episode of two episodes cobbled together under the title Cosmic Princess (which anyone interested can see right on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0S66KAW4zmQ)). Not exactly a stellar episode, but there you have it. One thing I'll definitely say for 1999 is that I absolutely loved the atmospheric electronic score.

I've been giving the last season of the 8DA anther listen and just got to "Deimos" and it's just suddenly struck me ...

As he's a) an obvious Fan Favourite, b) likes working for BF and c) is willing to work for the money BF pay ... why the hell haven't LC given David Warner another series where he's the lead?

GoldenTalesGeek
07-05-2013, 12:52 AM
I was skimming through the LC webpage earlier, and I noticed that they updated the site with the cover for the 3rd story of this year's 7th Medic trilogy. Definitely one of the better pieces of cover art I've seen this year. :)

Also, I agree with Nobbler. I'd love to see another Unbound story where David Warner's Medic faces the silver men or something. It'd be awesome.

Not sure I agree with the 'Unbound" approach of more for Mr W, though. His original take on 3rd worked really well, but his second one didn't work quite so well for me. It's a fine line to navigate, but 'M.Of.War" felt like any other Who story and not different enough to really feel "Unbound" - To use a VERY heavy handed approach his take on meeting Davros should have been one where (an incarnation too early - even better!) he IS prepared to bring the wires together and destroy the race at birth.

BUT - With that wealth of talent at their disposal, I really am surprised BF haven't used him to helm a brand new series with a unique character.

Ha! I wonder if they've got him as another Steele for their 'The Avengers' series? :)

With Nicholas passed away it's likely that those stories are locked.

Although what would have become of Jo Grant without the Doctor?

3 didn't encounter the Cybermen. The point of a mirror Universe story is to marvel at the schism surely?

Did the Silurian colony take hold, or did the Brigadier nuke them?

What stopped the Auton invasions?

Why did they stop boring down to the centre of the Earth in inferno?

How much of the Earth got consumed by Axonite?

Did the Master bother with Earth in the 70s if he wasn't following the Doctor?

In Day of the Daleks a divergent time line was coming to dominance because the Daleks "used time travel" to reverse their defeat in 2150ish, which means that they probably swooped in and killed the First Doctor before he could make impact on their occupation... However if the Daleks turned earth into a mobile battle platform in the mid 22nd century, then why were the time travellers able to jaunt from Earth in the "present" to Earth in the "future" if Earth could have been half a Galaxy away battling the Thals?

Omega. That's just huge. Gallifrey should be dust.

The Green Death? Meh.

Link starting an arms race in the 12th century? Did Sarah Jane Stop that all by herself?

Meanwhile by 1999, when these Mirror stories take place, shouldn't every world leader be bored of hiding the fact that they are really the puppet of a very telepathic giant spider clinging to their shoulders?

No. We most certainly hope that they are not.

But I was thinking, what else happened in 1999?

The movie obviously.

But everything world dooming that happened there is/was because 7 lost the Master during the New Years Eve festivities.

So the only question (yeah right!) in play, is could David Warner's Doctor pull Grace Halloway?
