CB got a raw deal thanks to the then head of CCB programming. His personal dislike of Baker forced CB from the role just as his Medic was coming into his own. Thanks to LC we've had the opportunity to hear a fully realized Sixer as CB wanted him to be.

Watched "Fighters from the Depths" for the first time in years last night (because nothing else was on) and I'm astounded at how awful the overall design of the piece was. They managed to make the Ocean Devils look better than they did in their first appearance, while at the same time making the Dinomen look absolutely ridiculous with that strange perpetual grin and bugged out eyes. And don't get me started on that awful high pitched voice. Of course the look of the story on the whole is pure eighties right down to the make-up, hair, and Michael Jacksonesque jackets. Definitely not the high point of Fifth's final season.

Pretty much that season started bad and ended bad...but had some really great tentpoles... after the shortened 20 and the early arrival of 6 ..i always felt we got 2 less 5th medic stories than we could have had. Imagine if season 20 had ended with the pepperpot story, and season 21 actually ended with Andromudbursts.......

Fighters could have been improved so much more 1. lights turned down from 100 to 10 2. no dinomen and made this an a solo ocean devil story 3. no sea creature

A great traditional episode. No Doctor Grumpy this time. Clara back for one last trip. A great monster.
Taking a long while to get used to PC, but this almost won me over. At this point in the classic history, we '74's would be criticizing this new 4th Doctor that was so much different than the others. And look how he turned out. Heck, I can even enjoy Colin Baker on audio as long as I don't see the coat or his ever-changing receding hairline.

I wasn't even factoring even USING the original actor because so many years have passed (heck... I wasn't even really all that serious about my question. It was more of a fun "hey, what if?").

GREAT episode!

It was DARK and yet FUN at the same time.
And all the while, the Medic was in classic form! Almost the ultimate incarnation - just enough of most of the previous personalities all perfectly mixed.

The only "bad" thing is that upon my first attempt to view, it must have been a bad DL because it was running a little slower than it should, and the THEME song, when slowed slightly was THE BEST VERSION of the THEME - EVER! It was slow and ominous and darker and eerie, yet majestic and powerful!
THAT isn't the "bad" part.

I was thinking..."is this slowed because it's a new version of the theme? Or is it due to the "olden timeiness" of the episode theme? Or is it a glitchy file?"
Turns out, after I DL'ed a 2nd copy and began viewing, I found the sound hastened to "normal" speed and the theme went back to being a whining insect.
THAT is the "bad" part.
That the theme song wasn't made better (and all it took was a slower speed to make it great).

For all the other seasons I've stopped noticing the various arrangements after an episode or two. But this one? Urg. After 8 episodes the melody still sounds like someone doing something vile to a cat whist scraping their finger-nails down a blackboard.

Thats ok, I hope your internet connection is sorted out soon. Not for my benefit, but because I know it can be frustrating - especially with streaming media.

My only plot-hole queries are...


1) if "GUS" went through such pains to populate the train with all the big-brains needed to analyze the mummy and find a way to neutralize it (even going so far as to frequently solicit the medic via tickets and whatnot) then what the heck was the old lady and her granddaughter doing there?

Most everyone else proved to be hard-light holograms, and as such - not even there - but the girl and her gran were real.

So...? Just fodder?
If so, then why bother making holograms of anyone else?
Populate the train as much as you can and let the mummy run rampant.
And how many other "real" people were there?
One cook and a guard?
The others were holograms (the other guards anyway - maybe cooks were really needed).

2) And what the heck did the mummy as a soldier have to do with anything? (aside from tying into the whole "soldiers are bad and/or complicated" theme of the season)
So the parchment was really a flag and the soldier had to defend it (or something). Fine. But I find it hard to believe that at no other time did someone ever just say "I give up, don't hurt me" or something like that (similar to a surrender).
According to "Professor Mummy Expert", there had been claims that among the various escape attempts was some sort of word or phrase that would stop the mummy.
This would appear to state that SOMEONE must have done so.
But since it fell to dust once the medic hit upon the answer, then that would mean no one else ever did?



I'm sure I'm just overthinking it.

Unless I'm totally mistaken, this episode, while good, really gave it away as to who the big baddie is going to be...


SONTARANS... 12 quotes 4 in ep4: "Sontarans are corrupting the course of human history." Hmm... And who once plucked out a bunch of geniuses to get out of a bind? The Sontarans in their debut with 3... and the debut of the ever wonderful SJS. Only thing is that I never thought of the Sontarans as beings of immense power and influence. Then again, the Puny Mind turned out to be the biggest threat the medic has ever faced yet... so why not have the potato heads be kings of the hill for series 8? In any case, I think they'll have something to do with this series... Not to mention the constant references to wars and soldiers... I guess on the up side, we could maybe get a good look at the Rutans. Their portrayal with 4 and the savage (although a good story), wasn't very convincing as a scary monster. Always thought that it could have been defeated with a giant tissue!

There was another enemy that stole geniuses now that I think about it. the RANI in 7's debut. now she is definitely a great deal smarter. the medic did have her eaten by a dino, would be poetic justice for 12 to have been swallowed by a dino in his debut! Could be she's using the potato heads in some way... if it was the rani, then it would definitely fit better with all the science experiment angle from this week's ep...

LC have a Rani story due out soon and they don't normally have major baddies stories like that at the same time the TV is using them. Hence why one of the Lost Stories had to have the baddie re-written.

True... but I still like to play the guessing game with Medic What. Could be way off of course. But the weird lady in black's gotta mean something... have a hard time believing she wouldn't be somebody from the Medic's past...

And with Homeworld being definitely saved now, it's only a matter of time before some TL escapes, although I guess you could make a case of the Rani not being there anyway... Could "Paradise" not be Homeworld in a weird way? Would be surprising for 11 to say that his mission is basically to find his way home and for Cl@r@ to visit Homeworld and possibly the medic as a kid and NOT have Homeworld pop up somewhere near the end of this series. IMHO of course...

If you miscopy the encryption key, leave a bit off, they will ask for the entire thing again.

Well, I have mine separated into the regular 4-part format, 1 part per mp3 file. I still feel put off that the DWRG is saying part 4 is over 40 minutes long when mine is little over half that. I'm almost thinking of just getting it from LC themselves when I get some more cash, but I have other stuff I wanna get when I get more money... Decisions, decisions... :(

Does anyone have Monthly #088? I feel like something's wrong with my np3s of it, as the part 4 I have clocks in at little over 23 minutes long. According to the Doctor Who Reference Guide, it's supposed to be little over 44. Entirely possible. But I ended up having to get #065 from LC because the fourth part of that was listed on the DWRG roughly as 10 or so minutes longer than the part 4 I already had when I acquired the story from elsewhere. But I may still get #088 from LC sometime just to be sure once I get more money together. I was gonna get it when it was available cheap during LC's 15-year anniversary sales, but I didn't get to it in time.

So I just listened to Lemory Mane. Good stuff. However, you know how you sometimes come across a story that exists purely for one moment? A quote or scene or something? I'm pretty sure this story was built around 'the ice cream man has stolen the TARDIS!' I wish there had been a behind the scenes for the ep, to confirm it.

You do not have to uninstall Jdownloadloader 1 to install Jdownloader2.

There's no reason to have them both running simultaneously, but when the updates start screwing you like this, it's nice to have options.

If I left click on the DL button all I get are jumps to other pages trying to get me to DL other software I don't want or trust.

Turn off/allow exceptions to your popup blocker, and the myfreemp3 should work.

Just a heads-up for fellow iTunes users - they've just release V12 ... and as it doesn't respect any previously defined UI configuration so expect to spend some fun time getting it back to a configuration you previously liked. Sigh.

And, yes, the new icon really is a revolting bright-in-your-face-red.

On the upside, though, the podcast bit does have a decent stab at telling you what day you can expect a new release. Which is nice.

It's like losing your baby teeth.

There's nothing to stop you keeping Explorer as your default browser for everything you have always used explorer for, if you chose to install some alternate browsers that will not pack it in or give up the ghost when things get difficult. Maybe you just install chrome so you can download from Mega or myfreemp3, and that's the only two things you use that browser for?

The obvious choices.

Actually, despite me joking about Lucie-Lite, it is a bit of a shame. An emergency character dropped in when Bonnie couldn't make some recordings and Maggie too ill, she's never really been given chance to properly find her own voice.

Flip was decent enough, but nothing spectacular. I didn't hate the character, but she never really stood out for me.

I can see what LC was trying to do with Flip. Sixie seemed to have educated companions (a college student, a college professor, and a computer programmer) so I think they just wanted to try a working class companion with Sixie. This may have been mentioned in one of the interviews of a Flip story, but I can't remember. I don't always listen to the interviews as many of them come across as self-congratulatory (except when Paul S. was on board; he seemed like a humble person, in my opinion).

She was better back when she was first introduced and was sort of a one-time companion rather than entire trilogy as we saw last year, in my opinion of course.

My 2 cents worth. I realize that this series has come under some criticism - some justified and some mostly not. This weeks episode was not only fun, but following the world tour afterwards, completely restored my faith as to why I - and millions of other fans, enjoy this programme. A programme for everyone. Not just for me. The episode you really didn't enjoy now may become a classic in 6 years time. I really can't see why anyone likes Caves of Androzani or Robots of Death, but I respect that others see something which I still haven't. And thats okay. And its okay to include a soapie element that may win over some new fans who may suddenly 'get it'.

Doctor Who is simulcast here in Australia at 5.30 est on Sunday and right across the world. It has had two premiere screenings in your local theater, and is accepted by fans world-wide. Watching the World Tour, what fans do on You Tube, what they make, getting together, it really brought home to me that this programme is simply the greatest concept, the greatest story, the greatest stars and the greatest show in history.

Embrace this series and know that if we don't 'get it' straight away, that someone else - perhaps a new fan - will.

I share quite a bit of your comments here. The episode was really good, especially since we really saw Cl@r@ at her best and she was able to get into the medic's head. Good character development story. BUT...

I share quite a bit of your comments here. The episode was really good, especially since we really saw Cl@r@ at her best and she was able to get into the medic's head. Good character development story. BUT...

Nah. Don't think shes a poor companion at all. Brilliant (and beautiful) actress I would say. I guess they have to make the companion involved somehow. In the old days they were trying to get back to the TARDIS as a overall plot. That concept now almost gone, what else could they do? In the same breath as we say, we don't want another companion that's lured by a evil force - we would also say that we don't want a companion that doesn't do anything other than say "what's that Doctor"...

On the subject of the Return of the Torchies; I can't see how the rest of the episodes in this set could compare. Impossible.


They should have completed the set with that story, not started it. Every thing else feels just a bit flat after it.

I was just reading through two forum threads discussing the new episode, only two people didn't like it at all (one very strongly so). Many many more loved it. I loved it!
however,
When Missy came on screen both I and my flatmate next to me emitted that particular groan of disgust, the long-extended one that's very loud and articulate while not containing any actual words or being transcribable in any script that I've seen.
Our distaste for her is extreme, which is interesting when I consider her similarity to the Master, whom we actually love. What's the difference? The Master did much the same things as her, but I think he did it with more class (except for perhaps Eight's Master). The classic Master always had an elegance to his demeanour, whereas about Missy there is nothing more striking than a stench of the base. I can see her baring her teeth and dragging the Doctor down into the abyss, like that Nazi lady in The Last Crusade.
If it comes out that she really is a regeneration of the Valeyard (as has been speculated), I will be offended. He, too, in his single incarnation that we've seen, was a worthy foe. I would have loved to see some stories of the Valeyard vs the Master, as alluded to in tToaTL.

The episodes themselves have individually been excellent (well, except for the one about the moon...), but up 'til now the whole has been less than the sum of its' parts.

But now the jigsaw puzzle pieces are coming together and starting to form an image. I think by Episode 12, any complaints fans have had are going to be completely forgotten.

I thought that about the red headed scottish lass - especially her first few stories.. It seemed like medic was redundant or acting in a manner we should disagree with and that she saved the day/corrected his errant behaviour.

He should act a bit different to us, he's an alien for christ's sake.

He was a bit off in his first incarnation - he was going to knock off that caveman with a rock - and has had some strange aspects in allhis incarnations. I like it when he's a bit off.

Medic is one of the few shows where I laugh out loud at off-handed quips. I'm loving this new scot medic.
Actually, the second in-command bloke, who became the leader of the seven, makes me laugh out loud as well. I've got just the same dry sense of humour!

pretty much every companion in the early days of the classic series was a cypher --- with their first and last stories pretty much giving the most writing about the character. ---- it was very rare you saw any fleshing out of any companion's friend or family in the old series. Bur after they joined the Medic that was sort of left behind... and the role as the 2nd fiddle remained constant.... The ausie was the first one where after she joined you saw other parts of her life; the other one was Dorthy McShane.... but pretty much in 26 years that was it... --- The major medic friends from the new series [not Adam or Astrid] all has co0mplete supporting casts. ---or were written that their backstory mystery was the story. Miss Oswin is no exception.

While the incredible shrinking tr@d!s was a bit groan-inducing at first, they soon DID something interesting with it!
I kept saying to the TV (I may have been in "altered states" at the time)... "WHY doesn't the Medic just stick his hand out of the door and MOVE the thing himself?!" - to which a few minutes later... HE DID!
AWESOME. It made so much sense, and NO sense at the same time, so why the heck not?

I liked the "cartoony" bits like the large sledge-hammer from the purse bit as well.

The BEST part is the final appearance at the end with the Medic as the Tr@d!s swoops in and he - after pleading with the universe to understand that HE TRIED to give them a chance to leave peacefully - is just going to have to END them!

The baddies WERE interesting too!
I half-expected the Medic to go on about "flatland" as a theoretical principal to the 2D universe concept, but he stopped just short of that.
And, with exception to the computerized "A-HA - 'Take On Me' video" type of visual that they had, I thought they were a nifty new addition to the rogues gallery.

Cl@r@ as the Medic was a nice touch. Allowing her to fully realize, from the other side of the situation, just WHAT it takes to walk a mile in the medic's shoes.
Sure, she's been along with each of the medic's throughout his entire life (love it or hate it) but that's still being on the outside looking in.
This was a chance to actually see how he lives (while simultaneously allowing HIM to look thru her eyes).

All in all, this series has been more of a cerebral look into the medic's adventures and less the constant command to "RUN!"
More mental and less physical.

Agreed. Wasn't the original question "Am I a good man?". And if we new where the story arc was going it would be pretty pointless watching.

Hi, all! Hope everyone's doing well in their lives, that everyone is good health, etc!

It looks one of my New Year's Resolutions when sorely off-track: spending more time with you all, trying to be more active in the forum here. Largely, it is due to the fact that I am not a fan of Capaldi's 12th Doctor, nor do I like the way the show is going under Moffat's reign! It seems like everyone in the forum here has been super-jazzed about his portrayal of the Time Lord, as well as the recent episodes. I didn't have much to add, so I thought I'd go off and do something else (like listen to LC audios, which, for me, have become the only *legitimate* WHO right now). Yeah, I know, for someone who has watched DW for 40 years or so, not the best choice I could'a made!

My wife and I tried, we *REALLY* tried, to give it a go with the first episode, "Deep Breath", but she left the room after the first five minutes after he came out of the TARDIS! I stayed for longer, fast-forwarding through a lot of it, i.e. most of it, and I just found it to be a real train wreck! While I think Peter Capaldi is a very good actor, I think, in this case, he came off as someone's granddad, fresh from the asylum! He seemed loopy, grumpy, and someone I would never want to travel through Time and Space with, let alone share a cuppa with! Judging from bits and pieces I have seen in clips, as well as synopses read (I stopped watching this season after "Deep Breath"), it sounds like he has not gotten any friendlier, nor has he given much evidence that he's not on a "weekend pass" from the asylum!

In addition, the writing seems sloppy and not the quality we've come to expect from such a highly-recognized show! Clara's "relationship" with Danny Pink seems forced and way-too-quick-to-happen! And, come now, why can't companions live in the TARDIS anymore? I mean, Ace never had any problems with, Ian and Barbara didn't, nor did any of the other pre-NuWHO companions! And, while I am at it, why does every companion need a boyfriend?!

And, lastly, Capaldi's Doctor is *nothing* like Tom Baker's Doctor was! 'Nuff said on that!

So, I am back (yes, I did miss the funny posts so many of the regulars, and the new additions, write), even tho' I don't still like the new Doc (and I abhor Moff even more so!).

Now, with *that* out of the way, who amongst the US-based users on here will be attending Long Island Who 2 in NY the first week of November?

I checked the LC website and we have a release scheduled for this month. Usually it is up by now. I don't know what the wait is about. Fraank-en-steen (also due out this month) I understand. They may be waiting until we get closer to Halloween for that one, but they could've at least released the monthly medic this weekend.

Another boys-own Doctor Who that the up-an-coming generation will enjoy and treasure. No real scary bits, so hopefully some good friends of mine may watch it this week. And a lesson in tree life and oxygen won't go astray. I'm loving PC's incarnation more and more now. I guess there will be those who will point out that the Doctor really didn't have to do anything this time but stand aside and watch it happen. And while it was a low-budget episode, I thought it had a charm to it with lovely interaction with the schoolchildren and Mr Pink. Roll on next week with the return of the Cybermen.

The monthlies are done an absurd amount of time in advance, usually about a year. Hell, the Jagfoot stuff is apparently like two years ahead of where we are.

Most likely they just had some distribution issues similar to the Frankenstein delay.

Try and get out of the 'how did we forget' tosh. The Doctor says the human race will forget like they did last time. Ok, we can stretch it a bit for the previous two events, but this one was covered by the news! It's not like the electronic records are going to vanish any time soon.

Do the whole thing on an alien planet, have it part of the myths and culture (like the tree sample) the Doctor has to discover and BOOM! no fridge logic moment.

Welcome back! I got on track with PC's medic with the 2D baddies. For me, it was the best so far. It showed that the medic IS basically a good man and with this latest one we saw that he finally connected with Sol-3 and with Clara. Obviously not the greatest episode but it did do a lot for PC's character. Now I'm only dreading next week seeing as "Clara Oswald never existed". I'm really not sure I want to know what that is about. Ok I do want to know but I'm not sure I'm going to like it. Once again, poor Clara! Went from splitting into half a gazillion reiterations to not having existed at all. I loved the way she interacted with 11 and I could see something interesting happening with 12 but it's moving too slow. There really seems to be a power struggle between them and with 2D, we have to wonder WHO is the better medic? She's sassy, intelligent, drop dead gorgeous. Here's a thought: why can't PC regenerate into Clara??? I mean if Romana could take Princess Astra's appearance, why not? Now I think that the blue box would definitely get crowded fast... I wouldn't mind finding myself stuck in a box with her!

I've got some software from here, but I haven't tried the audio/ video editing software so I can't vouch for it. You can always try!



In terms of the NCH software, they weren't really my cup of tea. Wavepad was okay, but I much prefer to use Audacity (which is multi-platform). You'll need to install plug-ins to export mp3 etc, but all those can be downoaded from the same site.
I reckon it's just as good as some of the paid alternatives but, of course, it's free (and legal)!
