Odd.

Yes - a lot of the Large Conclusions recent and upcoming box sets are only three discs now. There's not even a "behind-the-scenes" disc on this one as far as I can gather.

O/T Just wanted to express my condolences on your loss, Foefromthefuture. I know from personal experience just how awful the sudden loss of a close relative can be. For me it was listening to a new CD during those the very worst of times. It reminded me that life goes on, even when you think it cant. So, hang in there: life goes on and Medic What comes back on 30 March 2013! :-)

Sorry for not responding to this right away, quitefrequently, but I just wanted to thank you for your kind words. Your thoughts are hugely appreciated.

Yes - a lot of the Large Conclusions recent and upcoming box sets are only three discs now. There's not even a "behind-the-scenes" disc on this one as far as I can gather.

However, the big finishiwiki assures us that season 6 is coming out this October.

I suppose two small abbreviated season boxsets sells smoother than a giant 6 episode boxset in theory, even if they can charge more for two sets if they want to be mercenary about this?

Not that WE should complain about these things.

Thanks foefromthefuture, as good as your word despite everything; you have my condolences btw.

Can I just offer you the same advice I offered Del37 as you changed the filename of the folders, but not the files inside. Leaving the ID3tags intact seems to be very dangerous right now. As far as we know, this is how LC are tracking these files and sending out C&D notices and removing or changing them is simple enough.

Cheeky request, but I don't suppose you could please upload the individual covers could you?

Hey, are these home planet stories worth listening to? I have most of the other spin off series, but my favourite are the Doctor stories, even unbound. I did enjoy Cyberman and I, Davros though. Favourite Large Conclusions are the 8th adventures and the monthly releases.

Any advice if they are worth it?

If you like "Political Intrigue" stories then, yeah, I'd say they're OK. At least 1-3, anyway. Wasn't too keen on 4 as it takes things in an odd direction. Will be interesting to see if 5 turns them round again.

Hi andyb:

I mentioned the same thing to del37 in a PM: I thought that by uploading the files into a .rar archive it would hide the mp3 tags from any search. Is this not sufficient?

Hey foe

Putting them into a RAR archive may be enough, but I wouldn't like to risk it just in case.

A few ppl have mentioned various programs that will let you edit the ID3tags, but I have an audio/video editor that removes them automatically. The easiest way to do it is to right-click on the filename and go into properties and then details and then alter or remove the Title, Contributing Artist, Album Artist and Album.

For those who want to edit or remove id tags in mp3 files, it's extra easy to do if you use Winamp as your mp3 player. I've had to do this a lot lately, since my mp3 player doesn't seem to like the id3v2 tags that the company is using, and gives me an error when I try to play any recent file from them (even ones bought from them.)

All you have to do is load the files, right click on the file in Winamp, and click on View file info (or alternately, click Alt-3 while it's selected), then go to the id3v2 tab and uncheck the "Include id3v2 tag in file" box, click ok (or just hit enter), and Winamp will remove the id tags.

And it's really easy to do in big bunches of files, too. Select all of the files you want in Winamp, then View the file info, uncheck the box, hit enter for ok, and it will automatically bring up the next one. All you end up doing is unchecking, then hitting enter for each one, and you can get through a big batch in under a minute if you put one hand on the mouse button and the other on the enter button.

The only problem with password protecting the RAR file is that you're sometimes limited to how many ppl can download the file; MF limits it to 10 downloads but I'm not sure about others.

Blimey. I'd forgot just how much Whitaker changed the opening part of this.

Anyone know why he did it this way?

Not that there's anything wrong with it as it's written, but why so different from the source?

He was asked to write it as a "complete" novel in its own right by the original publishers, Frederick Muller/Armada, so that the events of An Unearthly Child (or 100,000 BC or whatever you want to call it) needn't be referenced and it could stand on its own. I think it works brilliantly - it's still AFAIK the only Medic novel written in first person and still one of the best DW novels overall. I like that he added back in the fabled "glass" adversary at the climax - when I read that as a kid I was so creeped out by it. It's still an unholy bit of imagery when it eventually turns up in the TV show itself, repurposed for the 6th Medic adventure involving 'revelations'.

Man, I was all set to get the Homeworld 5 stuff, and when I finally got to a computer I could use... poof. They'd vanished overnight. But it sounds like people are getting hammered all of a sudden (and is it just by MF, or other sites, too?), which is a real drag. Eager as I am to hear it, it sounds like we need to resolve a few things before the requests start flying thick 'n fast. Not that anyone's asking for my two cents, of course.

i think they just don't care - probably made a deal with the creators of that browser (without naming any names) and are therefore not interested in making their site compatible with other browsers.

I've also read that the site is being bombarded with new accounts and has a nasty habit of the uploads failing half-way through. Not much point in using a site that can't handle uploads half the time. I'll give it a miss thanks. Plenty of other options out there that work on all browsers.

Doesn't have much to do with audios, but, oh well.

Just curious what everyone's favorite TARDIS team is. Can be from TV, audio, books, comics, etc.

My top three (which all come from the TV show itself) (kind of hard to narrow it down)
1. Eleven, Amy, Rory (my first exposure to DW were these three)
2. Two, Jamie, Zoe
3. Three, Jo, Brigadier, Benton, Yates

Honorable mentions:
Eight and Lucie
Five, Tegan, Turlough, Nyssa

I hear good things about Six and Evelyn, but I haven't gotten a chance to listen to any of them.

Wow sorry to hear it... They are cracking down hard on us once again it seems.

As for favourite tardis teams that is always hard because there is something enjoyable in all of them. But if I'd really have to make a top 3:

1. Doctordonna (first exposure to DW)
2. Four and Romana
3. Five, Nyssa Tegan & Turlough

And yes Eight and Lucie or any tardis team with Eight because he is one of my favourite Doctors. And Two, Jamie + extras.

I hear good things about Six and Evelyn, but I haven't gotten a chance to listen to any of them.

I'll have to include a "so far" caveat, too. I'm currently watching Leela's debut serial, so I can't comment on much beyond that (aside from the 9th and some 10). That said...

#1 with Ian, Barbara, and Vicki, and
#4 with S.J. (I was all prepared to buck the fan consensus, but there's no denying what an easy chemistry they had)

Haven't heard a ton of audios, since I'm not engaging with them until I've hit that point in the TV series. But I will say that the CCs with Liz and #3 (via narration, anyway) were very welcome additions to her too-short tenure on the tube and in audio productions. A sad loss.

Tomoph
02-21-2013, 12:34 AM
If we're talking audio then 6 is by far the best, it makes you realise what we could have had if he had been allowed to play the part longer on tv, providing of course they got rid of that repulsive circus clown outfit and JNT, not that I want to start an argument, I realise both aforementioned have their own fan base, I'm just not one of them.

Funny, I've been feeling kind of bad for not mentioning them since seeing this series of posts, too. They'd definitely be right up there.

Audio 8 without a fondness for C'rizz.

"Old" Series TV: 2nd, Jamie & Victoria, 7th & Ace, 4th & Romana (with a special mention to the original crew, especially Ian & Barbara, without whom, etc...)

"New" Series TV: 11th & Amy (with or withour Rory), 10th & Donna

Audio: 6th & Evelyn (& pretty much anyone else, ESPECIALLY Frobisher!), 8th & Charley, 8th & Lucie, 4th & Leela (honourable mention to any Jamie or Steven CCs, which *kinda* count...)

Basically, I pretty much love 'em all! ;P

On audio, 7 and Ace.

This. Both McCoy and Aldred are my first medic-love, perfect team. (Plus, I respond to voices on an almost chromosome level and hers is remarkable.) On TV - 10 and Donna (because of Donna). If it had been 9 and Donna, I'd have been ecstatic.

this site SUCKS it gets the file downloaded up to 97-99 percent then stops...it says that the download is completed, yet all you have is a piece-o-crap file the you can't open to save your life.

Have you tried using google chrome?, I did a test on my wifes computer and it works fine

Shure, we can have some problems, it's a verry young service, but with the knowledge of the people of the good old Megaupload. They are back with a new system so new problems to be solved.

One of the problems is why using Chrome. They answered on a question (giving also some insights in their plans): "If we can't download from Mega using Firefox why the heck is there an addon for it" with "You can download from MEGA using Firefox without extension. However due to the fact that, unlike Chrome, Firefox does not have a File API (File API: Directories and System (http://www.w3.org/TR/file-system-api/)), and generally does not allow writing files from JavaScript we were forced to implement a fallback solution using Adobe Flash which limits downloading to max. 100MB per file. This extension solves everything, and gives Firefox full power with MEGA. We are already working directly with Mozilla to solve this issue without the need for an extension."

So maybe for now it sucks a bit, but in a couple of weeks we could have a new and better service than all the others together:-)

The phrase "Bollocks" springs to mind.

For a browser to download a standard MIME type file there is no need for any additional add-ons, Java, Scripting or Flashing or variations-on-that-theme AT ALL. So what the zarking fardwarks is the site trying to write to my system that's naff-all to do with downloading a file?

A choise of words, I am more curious how they are going to build from here (with the help of many others). As far as I know it's not common to use encryption on the data the way they do it. Maybe to complex, but maybe the best way to keep google out of your uploads...
It's easy to find something with a new approach bad, worse or somothing like that, but several new things on the internet started with issues before it became 'the next best thing'. Look at al those old pages on this thread... you could say they did a good job till they got taken down...

Not directly no, what I'm saying is that the tone of the responses to what was simply a suggestion made in good faith could be a little less confrontational perhaps?
Anyway, if anyone wishes to continue the discussion let's take it to private message. I'm sure none of us wants to clog the forum up with an off topic debate on phraseology and intent?

I think we're talking at cross-purposes here. I'm talking about the basics of what I allow my browser to download with my consent. A 'proper' web-page should never require any additional browser add-on to give you access to a standard MIME file. It's just not needed.

Further encryption of a file isn't needed either if access is via HTTPS and there's plenty of ways to deny search-bots access to site data.

Any further access to a system from a site directly just smacks of mal/spy-ware to me.

At least with something like a torrent file or an NZB you've a choice of client to use with that file.

1st Ian and Barbara [ and the Susan/ Vicki to me are interchagable...]
2nd [anything with Jamie]
3rd .........nothing really
4rd Sarah,Harry
5th Tegan,Turlough
6th Evelyn
7th Ace,Hex
8th early Charlie
9th Rose,Jack
10th Donna
11th Amy.Rory

If we're talking audio then 6 is by far the best, it makes you realise what we could have had if he had been allowed to play the part longer on tv, providing of course they got rid of that repulsive circus clown outfit and JNT, not that I want to start an argument, I realise both aforementioned have their own fan base, I'm just not one of them.

Amazing as JNT was during his early tenure[ just think of the last Tom Season and the 3 Davison seasons.....] I fully believe he would have been much better regarded as as producer if he had moved on along with Davison .

His refusal to give up the show when he should have , and then not being able to move on later ..... was a key point that helped the slow decline.

Baker was an amazing casting choice.... but he should have done what Letts did with Baker.. and Sherwin before him with Pertwee --chose the new Doctor and leave.

JNT for all his faults did cast 3 of the better actors in the role....5 truly was amazing and really succeeded in an era where his stories were mostly crap and the TARDYbox was crowded. 6 has shown with better stories and direction he could have been the long term favorite. and 7 well after that disaster of a debut his final two years were amazing

Yeah, what about everyone else?

From the C&D notice from LC to MF:

'It has come to our attention that your website offers links to downloads of a number of our titles'

It's not the uploaded files that were found, it seems, looks like the problem is here. With this info I've changed my mind, we may well have a spy, or employee of LC, lurking here. Changing to another forum may well be a waste of time, this asshole will just follow us and hiding the links in code obviously does not work.

All who pm'd and asked for the address were given it. Aside from those who are unable to accept PM's. Everyone who pm'd was under the impression it was a private forum. If someone has been publicly spreading the address then they are an idiot but I guess its gonna happen wherever its setup.

I would like to point out that the forum I made is set up so that only members can see the actual boards where any content may be posted.

I am trying to see if someone is willing to try and make a reply to see hidden content plugin for it. That way you have to submit a reply to see it.

The problem with RWQ here is you do not need to visit the board and do that to see the links. I get a daily email with all the days posts in and all the RWQ links appear in that.

Right, I've checked back through my last few uloads and every link BF reported match the links I posted here. They are not links for individual files, they are links for the folders (when I upload a batch of files, I put them in a folder and post the link for the folder). I doubt they could have gotten the posted links from a search - I say again; we have a snitch.

Moving forums will not help. Making the boards only visible to members will not help if the snitch is posing as a member, we need a way of making the links totally invisible and talking in code will be no good.

This is what I remember from last year, and I'm still not sure the insider v outsider debate was ever resolved (I don't really want to dig back through the thread that far, but it does seem as though MF was one of the prime targets then, too). It does seem a little more coordinated and aggressive this time, and you're right about the near impossibility of any sort of security on our part. I suppose the cooler heads (of which I'm obviously not one!) have it right. Take a breather, maybe be a little less 'prompt' in getting things up, and see what happens.

...and hey, dig that stylish new avatar. About time I got around to that.

I don't think so, I think it just gives numbers. Even if there was, my account has been suspended and I can't log in. A spy needn't download to see what's there, the fact that we openly post what we're downloading and even talking in code wounldn't help - the fact that the post was in code would tip anyone off that something 'dodgy' was being uploaded.

Sure they can get an unpaid intern to monitor this thread, and dozens of others, but to have a staffer paid 20 pounds an hour to monitor us is a stretch, and then you have to wonder how involved is the lawyer at 300 pounds an hour?

The only real way I could see this working is a zealous true believer righteously working free of charge for the greater good.

I mean this is not like when the local government spends 80 million dollars on software upgrades to catch 3 solo-mum benefit cheats who were collecting an extra 30 dollars a week under the table to pay for their girl to go to karate.

How many 10s of thousand of dollars are they thinking to spend on the off chance that we will suddenly hand over hundreds of thousands of dollars to their coffers?

just a passing thought -since my little bit of grief it seems others are having similar strife connected to LC posts

My personal opinion is that it's a person & not a search bot- my reasoning for this is that the posts that got me into trouble on the other Fred were with the usual hidden links but I also never mentioned the name of what I was posting- so there was nothing for a bot to track down _ i just posted a pic & the hidden link- with no title on my last few posts- it could only have been someone NOT something that reported me- just my thoughts- no evidence to prove it

I'm still here looking in, but keeping my head down- the Mrs gives me all the grief in life that I need ;-)

I'm inclined to agree with the individual over bot theory, given the nature of the recent activity, and the [most] zealous fan theory, too (which seems sort of embarrassingly obvious when you put it this way). And I can see the 'day-of' postings rubbing some people the wrong way.

I also can't believe that more people aren't citing Ian and Barbara as part of their favorite crew, sheesh... :)

Thing is though, it's seems to only be the LC uploads getting the C&D treatment. I've had the audiobook Shada up for a few good days now on MF and nothing. And before that several eBooks both old and very new. Again, nothing. So if the mole is only an over-zealous fan, why are they concerned with only one company's product?

Until a few days ago I didn't even know this was possible. A true eye opener when I did.

On the subject of Ian and Barbara, I like them but I simply haven't seen enough episodes or read enough books to really know what they are like. That's why they didn't feature in my top 3 ;) I'll get back to those eps one day.

Since I was born after the classic series ended I tend to just watch, listen or read whatever I can get my hands on, with the result that I've seen all of 4&Romana but not 4&Leela and only a few 4&Sarah Jane. I've seen all of 5 but nothing of 6 and hardly any 7. I've also seen most of 3&Jo, but not 3&Liz. I have recently seen all of 2 and I was really surprised by how fantastic he is! Tomb of the Cybermen is rapidly becoming one of my favourite episodes. I've only seen the odd ep with 1 here and there...

Welp, excellent counterpoints to the idea of a bot. And I had no idea that Google was doing that now-- I was just using TinEye and not really giving it a second thought. What can I say? I'm no Inspector Spacetime.

And I was making a jokey fuss over Ian and Barbara not only because I'm still making my way through the classic series and haven't even seen three medics yet (so hardly the person to be browbeating anyone about it), but because it reminds me of a line from the Wife In Space blog that occurred to me as I was beginning the series myself: "They should've called the show Ian (http://wifeinspace.com/2011/01/the-daleks/)." That site's been a hoot to follow as I see all these for the first time myself, in case anyone's unfamiliar with it.

I don't really understand why everyone is so convinced that there's some sort of "spy" or "mole" here. It seems really obvious to me that they discovered this page long ago and have been monitoring it. Doesn't that make sense?

I mean if you worked for the company and were responsible for tracking down their stuff when it gets posted, all it would take is ONE search at any time in the past for you to find ONE story here, and you'd keep it on a list of sites to check regularly. And every time they check here, there's more links to their stories. So, they keep checking. Do you think that they just keep forgetting that there is this site out there where people continuously post links to their stories?

It doesn't take any sort of spy or mole or hi-tech espionage to keep checking the same site that keeps posting links to stories, does it?

As soon as the first story was taken down, that should have been a hint that the gig was up. It's amazing to me that it's taken this long for them to get really serious about this here.

Sometimes the simplest solution is really the correct one.

Agreed. But they'll argue that's it's sites like this one that is the reason they have to charge more, but that's only true up to a point. They'll reckon that we're costing them thousands of pounds every month, but that only holds true if everyone who downloaded a file would have gone out and bought it instead.

This is true, but if the movie industry started charging more to make up for lost billions in revenue through piracy then god help us :).

I'd sooner buy the original product, if a movie comes out that I want i buy it, same with music and tv, but I also like to spend my hard earned cash wisely and for me 15 quid is way over the top for a monthly audio.

Same here; and unfortunately with LC releasing so many audios every month, and not to mention the box sets, there's no chance of me being able to afford them. If I had the cash, then I would buy them and I'm sure many others would too.

It's society, man! :) But yeah, although the definitive and utterly irrefutable study has yet to appear, it sounds like the targets of these efforts are also the biggest paying media consumers. I'm eagerly awaiting the day when I can once again show the support I'd like with cash money, but the temporary *knocks on wood* alternative is doing without, borrowing from an individual or library, etc. And it doesn't sound like France has seen a spike in legit sales after implementing a draconian law. Oh, and it looks like the US 'six strikes' program might finally be starting up in two days, on the 25th. It'll be interesting to see how that pans out. Or doesn't pan out.

A couple of infamous moments that still await me. I just finished season 14's Face of Evil, and I have to say that Leela has probably gotten the best companion introduction I've seen. Jameson really sells a character that could've been just embarrassing (yet easy on the eyes, there's no getting around that part of it). As for medic introductions, I'd say Pertwee's been the luckiest so far.

Not sure I really agree with you there. But only because there's only really been two 'bad' intros - Poor 6 being off his rocker, and poor 7 due to a bang on the head.

Which brings to me to one of my favourite theories of 8 to 9 ... stepping on lego. Damn painful and aggravating enough to probably invoke a regen. Yet far too embarrassing to show on screen.

Something to keep in mind when we talk about how expensive the audios are: We can buy some of the stuff without buying every little thing they put out. I've been taking advantage of the great sales (every EDA half off!!) even though I'm trying to get the old credit card balance down. By June at the latest I should have enough to grab a subscription to the monthly range. We don't need to go bankrupt buying everything but if we all bought something, especially a subscription, it would help the company we love considerable. On the plus side, if we supported the monthlies, ccs, etc but don't get every little spin off boxset they release, maybe they'll stop releasing so many.

Yeah, we can pick and choose. But what to choose - there are so many excellent series out there. People will keep buying the spin-offs cos they're fans and yes, they do keep having sales but even then you'd almost have to take out a mortgage to be able to afford their back catalogue.

LC know their market, speccy-geeky near autistic completionist geeks that we are (or is that just me?)

they don't seek to expand their userbase, just milk those they have for as much as they can, hence all the spin-offs

if they were to get more people to want their products the price could fall.

in this 50th year, where are the scratchcard download codes given away with the kids version of the Medic's magazine? the first 50 stories for free to bring in more people?

No, we get yet more spin-offs

I am in total agreement. I have had a few subscribtions down the line, for 8 and Medics I hadn't seen yet even, so those audios are still unlistened but I wanted to support them, but it just got too expensive to keep up for me also.

I really hope there is not a spy here and that this can blow over, so I can return to requesting *S*n*a*k*e*b*i*t*e* or *G*a*l*l*i*f*r*e*y**5* considering those download links were taken down way too quickly for me to have managed to grab them.

And perhaps an idea: Post here what audiostory you have just listened to, as if a review, and have others PM you for download links, that you then send out by email? That way they never learn of the download links and have a hard time proving you are the one sending people the audiodramas. Or perhaps, inbox sizes permitting, the files directly.

Either this or a skydrive/cloud/dropbox type of storage that only trusted people get access to...have been using that for some time now for my own TOR score project and a novel that I write with a mate of my who lives in a different country then I live in.

And let's face it; some of the most recent spin-offs haven't been up to snuff either. Imho, Vienna wasn't a strong enough character to warrant her own series, Counter Measures was an interesting idea but boring and I'm sure there are others but I can't think of them off the top of my head. What got me about Vienna was ... WHY?

Put it this way; I don't want one, but I can see why people want a Charley spin-off, J&L made an impact from day one, Counter-Measures is rooted in the show history.

But a spin-off announced before the character had even been heard in the first place? That's just taking the widdle. And it was as dull as ditch-water.

If they want there own unique character - forget the DW universe and start from scratch.

The Vienna character reminds me, in a way, of Gene Roddenberry trying to introduce a new series starring Gary Seven off the back of Star Trek. You put a new, dull character amongst the characters people know and love and are then surprised when no-one gives a stuff.
