While I don't have the full thing, I think I have enough clips taken from 13th Nov 1999 to fill in almost all the gaps between the actual episodes. If you have the episodes that were shown, then you should be able to reconstruct the majority of the night's viewing...

I have:

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t51/StefanCole/Doctor%20Who/1999.gif

It only comes to about 300Mb, so I'll put it up for you - uploading now...

I imagine between the both of our uploads, one can Frankenstein together a version with the best of each.
Oddly, the first 4 of your KC files worked fine, but every time I try #5 and #6, I get to the download link, then it takes me to an upload page and won't actually download it...
Would you be able to upload #5 and #6 again, please. I'd love to have the upgrade on the ones I have...
Thanks :)

Just a question. Does anyone have a problem with me being here? Sorry to sound like a real nerd, but I get the feeling that I've said something wrong.
DX121: I'm really not having a go at anyone wishing to only use the free download option. All I've done is to offer a solution. I don't have the Internet back home, so all my uploading and downloading takes place at this very stressful radio station or through Internet cafes. So, it's a advantage to me not having to wait for slow files.
Evilmonk and others: I've tried to start what was requested often enough - another separate forum to place links in, but I don't know or trust enough people here to do this. So, I need you to invite anyone you like [via PM] and hopefully, the time we spend on uploading stuff doesn't get wasted. But if it's a crazy idea, then it's something I'm not aware of.
And the reason I don't upload much here is simply because by the time I read what someone wants, go home, load onto USB and come back the next day, someone's beaten me to it. You're all too good. :-)
Yeah, offended like a real geek, but wise enough to be considerate to ask why and if it's something I can do.

As far as I'm aware, Paul, no-one has a problem with you being here. In fact, unlike many other forums, this thread has always been very friendly, and a nice place to hang out. I wish I'd found it earlier. It reminds me of an old DW club I was a member of from 1988 to 1991, in which people discussed their favourite subject, with some swapping of old cassette tapes and VHS tapes going on. Obviously, times have evolved, and now those audio and video releases can be swapped digitally, but the atmosphere is the same. Everyone here is a fan who just wants to feed their who-craving while there is no Who on the TV. All offerings here are gratefully received, and while I try to provide the rarer bits, I love the latest stuff too.

As far as 'something I can do', just chatting here, requesting stuff you want (chances are someone else wants it too), and if you are able, sharing with others, is enough. If you aren't able to share, then that's fine too - not everyone is able to share their files, for various reasons. Sorry if you've spent time trying to upload something to find I've already done it. I try to meet any requests as soon as I spot them, and I check this thread almost hourly. I have a hard-drive with 700Gb of DW-related data at my disposal, so can fulfil most requests within a very short time.

I did spot your request for the latest J&L, but sorry, that's one thing I don't have. I am also missing 'Bereft of Elegance II', both of which I'd love to listen to. 'Huge Conclusions' is a prolific releaser, and I guess we have to wait until someone gets round to converting them. When I obtain either of these, you'll all be the first to know ;)

Seems it isn't corrupted I re-downloaded the file, unzipped it and viewed the videos, and they play fine.

I think with the reliance currently on often smaller file sharing alternatives, there is going to be a little fiddling around necessary with browser alternatives to get files from such sites. I've personally come across a few alternatives that won't download with Firefox, but will quite happily download in Explorer. You can't expect the level of browser optimization of the bigger, former, well-funded sites

Of course, if you are using Winrar to expand files, there are occassionally issues with its use. I've had some rar files that will quite happily expand with 7-Zip foreinstance, but report errors in Winrar.

I would say rapidshare can be a pain to download from with its enforced slowdown, but the efforts of those uploading are well and truly appreciated. Perhaps those with the presence of mind and upload capacity can mirror those particular links, and others sites that people have problems with. :)

Cheers

@Who Lover I agree with everybody here. This entire thread has been generally extremely polite. I visit at least twice a day and I've never seriously gotten the impression that anyone was ever truly cross with anyone else. If you ever do start that private thread, please let us know!

Has anybody else ever come across this? It's a fan made novelization of Rose and it includes a few post regenerations scenes for the Ninth Doctor. It's only 70 pages or so but the first bit I've read seems decent enough. I can't seem to google whether or not the author ever did anymore.

Never had a problem with WinRAR - I use it to create zip and rar files - Usually zips for sharing, as it's more widely accepted.

I use Chrome as my main browser, and have done since it was first launched. I also have IE, Nightly, Opera and Safari installed on my PC (as I do web design, it's useful to check my sites in all browsers to avoid compatibility issues). I use Nightly (the 64-bit version of Firefox) if a site requires 64-bit java, but never really found a site that does, so really it's only used by my wife, who uses it so that I don't have to log out of my emails/facebook in Chrome. I hate IE with a passion, since I created a CSS-heavy website that works in Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Safari, but you can't click the links in IE.

For sharing services, I prefer 4shared, which has a 20-second wait before download, then only minimal slowdown, if any. This can be annoying if you are getting a lot of small files, such as PDFs, from one person, but for single large files, it's fine.

Just tried again, and #5 is working (will try #6 when #5 is done) - seems it was a temporary glitch.
I did wonder at the time if Peeje had a maximum download per day limit, and I'd reached it, so it refused to work, but there was no message to tell me this... I have also rebooted my PC since this happened (damn MS updates!), so it may have been a browser or cache problem that got cured by the reboot. Nevermind - works now! :)

I used to be a moderator on this now-defunct gaming website and IRC channel, so I kinda get what you mean. However, in my case, it was someone manipulating the IRC chat logs to make it seem like I was some sick pervert who was only on the site for girls and similar shit. As if that's bad enough, the manipulating happened when I was taking time off the site to recover from some oral surgery I had to have done, and would be so doped up on pain-killers my coherency would be pretty much nil. Some people are real bastards like that, unfortunately.

Well folks, here it is at last - the first instalment of the Reimagined Power of the Daleks, starring Nick Scovell as the Doctor and featuring guest stars Barnaby Edwards, Nick Briggs and Lisa Bowerman. Part two follows in July and the conclusion in September (but read on for info on a special big screen showing). Made as a 'not for profit' fan film we do hope to raise money for Cancer Research UK and Children in Need via advertising.

As this is an M4B file (has DRM protection capabilities), I've converted it to standard MP3 (which also reduced the quality a little from 251kbps to 128kps, hence the smaller size). Here's the MP3 version, with cover art added:

Just finished relistening to Dalek Empire IV. Every time the Daleks mention the spacers, and then feel a need to remind the listener exactly what a spacer is, I just keep thinking that they're trying to sell us nonexistent toys. lol

One of their best single CD stories for a while, I thought.

But, as a side point, am I the only one that gets tired of hearing Briggs as The Daleks? Every so often I wish he'd relinquish the task to someone else such as Toby Longworth or Danny Webb (or even Mitch Benn) just so that the underlying tone is different.

The Daleks is about the only time I'm not tired to hear his voice!

Looking forward to this new play very much. Thanks, Davros.

I agree - I really enjoyed that one! Nice that Leela finally got to meet the Daleks - lol!

Mitch Benn! Yes! Definitely!
I've been a fan of Mitch Benn since before he was ever on BBC Radio, when he was still doing the club circuit, plugging his first CD (I have his 1st and 2nd). I think he'd be great in Doctor Who, but as a Dalek, he'd be amazing! :D

I also enjoyed EOD. It's a shame the old style Dalek voices couldn't be used as these would have fitted better with the 4th Doctor. I've always found the 'New' Dalek voices a little harsh sounding.
Also Power of the Daleks fan film part one was pretty good.

GoldenTalesGeek

I've seen some of the classic Dalek stories, and I enjoyed them. But their voice doesn't have quite as much impact as when Nick Briggs does it. Maybe I've just grown more accustomed to Briggs' version, but I feel that when he does it, it's very "in your face", which helps sell how nasty they are.

sgcohan
04-15-2012, 08:31 PM
Yeah point taken. I grew up with the classic series so have a soft spot for the 'old' Daleks. The advantage with audio is you only have to listen to them and not see them. The NEW Daleks are awful. Though I hear they are going to change the design again.

Thanks for EoD, Davros. A good, solid Dalek adventure and yeah, great to hear Leela meeting the Daleks at long, long last! The Baker/Jameson chemistry is in full effect here - it's wonderful to hear them together. Ended a bit abruptly though - thought there might some kind of coda.

Glad you enjoyed it - it's one of my favourite Doctor Who stories, and such a shame it was never completed in 1980. The animation that was on the Beeb's site (and it's still there (http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/webcasts/shada/), with a few other webcasts), is great, as it's the BF audio drama with pictures - which should happen more often...

It's a shame too, that the 2011 animation was refused by the Beeb (and their worldwide releases section), as it look much better than the webcast one. The author (https://twitter.com/#!/IanLevine) is like Marmite, you either love him or hate him (as he's a pretty successful record producer, and apparently a bit like Simon Cowell), but he was instrumental in stopping the Beeb from destroying the old episodes, and getting them released them on DVD. Personally I respect what he's done for DW fans, but I don't think I'd like to meet him. I do hope his dream of seeing his animation sold on DVD comes true though...

Tanis, your enthusiasm to help is great :)

I personally have most of the back catalogue of audio releases, and can assist.

I've tended to wait until things have been requested, as one never knows what still up from this forum.

Question: Is the DVD release of the Daemons in colour? The last time it played in Oz it was in black & white, and I can't recall it being one of the BBC holdings that was listed as being a B&W holding only.

Amazon.com: Doctor Who: The Daemons: Jon Pertwee, Katy Manning, Nicholas Courtney, Richard Franklin, John Levene, Roger Delgado, Damaris Hayman, Christopher Barry, Barry Letts, Robert Sloman: Movies & TV (http://www.amazon.com/Doctor-Who-Daemons-Jon-Pertwee/dp/B0072BNJGC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1329297582&sr=8-2)
Quoted from a review on the US Amazon.

According to the website, dvdactive, episodes 1 & 2 supposedly look almost as good as the original Quad master tapes, ep 5 isn't far behind, but ep 3 looks "soft" by comparison. They didn't mention how well ep 4 turned out, but I wd assume that it must look very good becuz it was the only one that still existed in (colour) PAL format (for the 1993 VHS release of THE DAEMONS, the monochrome film of the other four ep's was overlaid onto the NTCS colour signal from an "off air" VCR recording of them). The site also noted that the video sequences looked better than the scenes shot on film. Hope that they're right and that this helps.

Am I the only one that thought that 4DA: EoD was just ok? I know it was supposed to be a bog-standard Dalek story, but did it have to be THAT bog-standard? You can tell that this was the first Baker story they did, since they hadn't even begun to reel in his excesses. He sounds very much like he did in the Nest Cottage BBC audios, overaggagerating every third word, whether it was actually important or not and really trying way too hard to give everything he says a total air of mystery, even if it's just hello. But Louise really saves this one. Not only is the character handled very well in this (as it is in all of the 4DA's and lost stories so far!), but her acting is excellent (ditto!) And as much as I lke the CD extras, are we going to be treated to a whole season of actors basically saying "OMFG I get to work with Tom Baker in Doctor Who!" -- and writers and directors basically saying the same thing?

Now, Five's TET, on the other hand. I'm only one episode in, but it's wonderful so far. It really draws you in right away. And the soundscape is possibly one of the best I've heard in a BF audio to date. By going to English-occupied India, it really creates a nice mix of the familiar with the exotic. The first multiple cliffhanger is a doozy! I think this one is going to be one of the goodies!

I stopped listening to the extras a while ago as they stopped being mainly about the writing, production and proper "behind the scenes" stuff and became what felt just like back-slapping and Richardson fawning over people.

The books, or audio versions? I don't have either, but really want the books as PDF files.

1st CC latest? Is that the 1st CC or the latest CC? From the reference, I assume you mean April's release, but I haven't seen this available anywhere yet, but it is available from the BF site now...

None of the Classic series stories mention The Time War at all (and BF avoid it, too) though it is said (by RTD, I think) that 'Genesis Of The Daleks' is to be taken as Archduke Ferdinand moment of The Time War. As for references in the New Series ... Probably a mention in all of the 9th and 10th stories, but not so many with the 11th tenure.

the time war happened between 8th and 9th - perhaps the reason why 8th became 9th?

I'm thinking they are going to have to cover it in the series properly at some point but they have no idea how to lol

I *THINK* RTD has already confirmed (possible via that book he did about the writing of the first season of The New Series?) that 8th -> 9th was due to the war.

I'm not a great fan of the idea of trying to cover it any more than the odd reference - Mainly as it'll never, ever, be able to be visualised/audio-ised in the full grand-scale that RTD obviously sees in his head when he thought of it. We're sort of talking every single terrible aspect of war, from the Paschendale Trenches to Hiroshima, multiplied by a factor of OMFG!! Add in time-travel to that and repeating the same things over again as history folds back and forward on itself. Nukes on the Somme? Lasers at Agincourt? That twisted causality.

Basically - leave it in the head of the viewer.

Besides. I more lean to the idea that Moffat is going to erase the Time War as part of the whole universe 'reboot' from The Pandorica. Or something.

with indirect mentions in 'the doctor's wife' post pandorica i don't see how he can erase it, but i don't think he needs to do the whole omfg thing, more clearing up of stuff that's already been bought up - like the timelords going insane and how that came about

Ah. Fair enough. Perhaps it's safe to say that SM is less likely to keep bringing it up again unless there's a damn good reason to. More, I suppose, 'erasing it' by never actually talking about it again.

A different sort of question for anyone who cares to share their opinion. I've just finished the Troughton years, making the tenure of the first two Doctors the only classic Who I've seen. [E: And I've only watched a few seasons of the new series. My point is I'm not exactly steeped in Who-knowledge.] I also recently became aware of the audio story involving a sort of 'alternate history' version where Troughton's successor shows up in 1997 instead of the 70s.

So here's my question: is this just an absolutely ideal time to listen to that story, or is it filled with enough Who "mythology" that it's best enjoyed when I know more about what's to come? (i.e., after the Pertwee run. After all, I haven't even encountered the Master yet.)

More generally, I'm curious to hear what anyone has to say about the issue of BF cramming their stuff with Who lore, continuity, fan service, etc. I've actually been sticking with the stuff that covers only what I've seen so far. Namely CC stories. And I'm wondering how lost I'd be if I 'branched out' a bit.

You're talking about Unbound - Sympathy For The Devil. Yeah, give it a whirl. It's a great story and Warner makes a brilliant Doctor and continues in the sequel 'Masters Of War'. That story isn't as good, IMHO, but worth it as he and the late Nick Courtney work very well together.

As for "getting lost" ... don't worry about. If you take into account all the various stories across all media the whole continuity is a damn nightmare. So just make sure you keep track of which avenue you're currently enjoying! At least the BF:Unbound range is short and sweet and that respect!

I take the alternative view to nobber.
I think Sympathy For The Devil is full of references to invasions that took place during the 3rd Doctors time (but which had very different outcomes in the alternative universe - with the Doctor not being there) that you'd get much more from it after watching the 3rd Doctors TV adventures. In fact much of my pleasure of listening to story was from twists that depended on knowing what happened in seasons 7-11.
It may also have spoilers in it that might colour your later viewing of the TV series.
I'd really advise against it.

The follow-up story is also quite dependent on you knowing what happens in a story in season 12.

(That is all IMHO of course - you'll never get Who fans to agree about everything/anything :) )

Nobber
04-19-2012, 02:11 AM
Oh, I agree that you get MORE from it after watching 3rd, but you don't NEED to have seen them. (Which, I suppose, I should have said earlier!)

Yeah, personally, I'd recommend to wait to listen to Sympathy until you make it through the 3rd Doc's era. As for the sequel Masters, I'd probably wait until at least watching Genesis, which is the first season of the 4th. It's not necessary, per se, but it will help you appreciate them better.

Can I just rant a bit about the piss ants over at thebox (a place I hate, but I want stuff on it)? Those mods just said I couldn't upload Trout's last story on DVD9 because a DVD5 is already there (big honking difference in quality) and it's not different enough. What kind of nonsense is that? And no answers about the fact that there are 3 VHS and DVD rips and 2 mp3 rips of that same story up concurrently. Talk about hypocritical. My upload was not the same as the others and different people only want the DVD5 or only want the DVD9, as can be seen over at the green demony place where if you put up a DVD9, the DVD5 folks whinge about just wanting to burn it to disc and if you put up the DVD5, well, it's a bit rubbish for ripping .avis--which explains why that site has taken to folks posting both concurrently!

And it's more than clear that they have some sort of blocking on leechers helping to seed while they complete the file, as it would hurt the initial seeder. So it's really hard to keep any sort of ratio without uploads. I have stuff that isn't on there (or gasp, is one of those disallowed 'upgrades'), but after this I might not even try.

I think one of the biggest mentions was in EoT, Part II:

The Master: But, this is fantastic isn't it? The Time Lords restored!

The Doctor: You weren't there, in the final days of the war. You never saw what was born. That if the time lock's broken then everything is coming through. Not just the Daleks but the Skaro Degradations, The Horde of Travesties, The Nightmare Child, the Could-Have-Been King with his armies of Mean-Whiles and Never-Weres. The world turned into Hell, and that's what you opened right above the Earth. Hell is descending.

The Master: My kind of world.

I'm thinking they are going to have to cover it in the series properly at some point but they have no idea how to lol

They's have to bring back the 8th Doctor! I'd LOVE to see that... It's about time 'The Moff' made a multiple Doctor episode. Could have 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th! Why not CGI the first 3 it for good measure?!?

Probably one easy way of going about this is to look at Time War (Doctor Who) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_War_(Doctor_Who))

Scroll down to the references at the bottom and it lists numerous episode titles as references which will have some relation to the time war. click the pointy up arrow next to them and it'll jump to the reference in the main text.

It never got fully seeded to the swarm. As such, without the original seeder, everyone is incomplete. That's one of the limitations of bittorrent, though to be fair, it's a limitation of pretty much any kind of file sharing. Until the original sharer is done uploading, no one is complete. The good news is that with so many people now at 79.2%, once he's done, it should be easy to get quickly for most people.

He's posted a comment that bandwidth limitations are keeping him from seeding 24/7 and says that he'll have the rest up today.

No point requesting seeders if no-one else has got the whole thing yet - the uploader has hit his bandwidth limit, and has to wait for block to be lifted:

Will be back uploading today guys. Can't upload 24 7, band width limitations prevent me from doing that. All will be fine today. Thank you.
He's managed to seed 79.2% of it so far, which is enough for me to see that the few finished files are 320kbps!

Eccelston said he "didn't like to bathe in the same waters twice" (plus he didn't quite like playing the Doctor); so no, I don't think we'll ever see Nine again (so there never will be an on-screen eighth regeneration, that's sad...)

But for the others :

McGann stated he'd like to play the Doctor again, but only if he doesn't have to wear a wig -> so we may see Eight again (and God, how I would love that !!!)
Tennant never confirmed nor denied anything, but I'm pretty sure he's likely to make a guest appearance
Smith... well, he currently is the Doctor, so yes, we'll definitely see Eleven again (the sooner, the better !)

Yeah, but Tom Baker finally returned to the role after all these years, so "never say never". One day, when he's down on his uppers, and a generation considers 2005 onwards "classic" a latter-day incarnation of Big Finish may tempt him to do audio.

i was just about to comment on that sale.

That is about $76 a day for aussies (for downloads, extra for the cds as we have to include the postage, so probably closer to $90 a day) - i don't think so somehow.

They are losing possible sales by not making it those prices available longer.

I remember Tom Baker swearing that he'd never have anything to do with Doctor Who after leaving. It's possible CE will change his mind in the future too (although he might demand a high wage). I think his refusal to 'do a Who' may harm his future endeavours, if whovians refuse to watch any more Eccleston, he'd lose a large part of his audience, which might put off prospective employers, leading to work drying up for him, which could then make him desperate enough to take a dip in those waters again.
EDIT: Heh, Nobber beat me to saying the same thing... I refreshed the page and didn't notice we'd moved onto a new one...

10 of them available per day is ridiculous! I certainly can't afford to spend 250 in one week to get them all (although I am tempted to get #1). It seems they are trying to get rid of surplus stock before the new website launches (on the 30th)...

Well, you never know with Eccleston. But I wouldn't hold my breath. I think it's pretty clear that something happened that upset him a great deal, judging from what little he's said about the issue. But time does heal most wounds. But if he and Billie were to ever signal that they'd consider coming back on audio, I bet that would spur Big Finish on to get the license for new Who.

As for Big Finish, they've now gotten just about everyone left from classic Who. Tom and Janet are onboard. And they even said on a recent podcast that Matthew Waterhouse is seriously considering it, too. That pretty much leaves Jackie Lane and John Levene, I believe. And I don't think that they've actually even tried for Levene, since I doubt he'd say no. I'm not holding my breath on Jackie Lane, though, not that Dodo's a big loss or anything. Then again, if anyone could make Dodo interesting, it's the people behind Big Finish. Look at what they've done for Mel and Steven!

The stupid thing is that they keep having these (and I use the phrase somewhat ironically) "special one day sales" - Why the hell don't they just drop the price of 01-50 to a 5 each permanently? Would save them having to keep changing the site prices all the time, good way to get people on board, and the 'sale' aspect in future could be a "buy nine, get the tenth free" sort of thing - and that would probably help those that have cheery-picked releases previously and want to fill in the gaps.

Would save them having to keep changing the site prices all the time, good way to get people on board, and the 'sale' aspect in future could be a "buy nine, get the tenth free" sort of thing - and that would probably help those that have cheery-picked releases previously and want to fill in the gaps.

Oddly, #2 is already available for 5, so I guess on the first day, that will be reduced by 0% (or is that one experiencing a different one-day sale, or possibly BF forgot to put the price back up after the last one?)

What Doctor Who episodes mention about the Time War?

Big Finish wise, you could count in the first two or three Gallifrey series as it is somewhat hinted at, that the Daleks are behind the - lets call it turmoil to avoid spoilers. If you are into scheming degenerate politcal intrigues (a bit like HBOs Rome) the series is for you.

It's possible CE will change his mind in the future too (although he might demand a high wage). I think his refusal to 'do a Who' may harm his future endeavours, if whovians refuse to watch any more Eccleston, he'd lose a large part of his audience, which might put off prospective employers, leading to work drying up for him, which could then make him desperate enough to take a dip in those waters again..

I don't think CE is hoping for whovians as his audience, before and after Who he had more than enough fans that liked his work because of the quality of his acting and not watch the tv, film or went to the theater because he played a role as the 9th doctor. I also see no reason why CE would not do a guest-job (the bathing was more about not going back to do a season as a doctor). The reason to quit was how the crew was treated during that year by specific people (or as I understood just one person...) Those are gone so... And all interviews, except with those students, he did not mention this so the truth of his answers... But to be honest, I would not like a multi doctor (only 9, 10 and 11) when the story isn't produced by RTD... I liked SM as a writer when RTD was de exec producer as exec producer SM isn't very good and his stories suffer from it IMHO.

Also, watching Il Decimo Pianeta for the first time!

And I just listened to a new audio with a certain Mad Monk from Siberia. Couldn't resist. And then I wrote the wiki page (http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Grigori_Rasputin). And I never, ever get tired of thinking of the scarfed one's turn as said historical figure. It would have been a million times better if they had gotten him for it (he recently did reprise a fake version of the bearded one for sraW rasT, so the look-a-like status is already with precedent).

Couple of brief thoughts on J&LS4

Not bad on the whole. A good, solid, 3.5/5 from me. A few clunkers in the dialogue. But two main things really jarred ...

The 'anti-homophobia' message at the end of CD2 was as subtle as being smacked around the head with a slice of lemon wrapped around a large, gold, brick. As much as one appreciates and understands the sentiment, it was just so badly written and delivered they may as well have stopped the story and have the cast and crew yell "We Support Gay Rights!"

And having the Dotcor and having them go off with The Doctor ... Can't decide on this one. Part of me likes the idea, but part of me thinks the two characters should just carry on in their own world and gradually leave the Who-niverse behind. Victorian 'Scarifyers', if you will. I wonder how much of it is 'stunt casting' to improve sales? Get more people to get them in just because they're off with The Doctor? I dunno. But ... hmm .... can't decide.

On the upside of that, though, Colin Baker is in great form as an early (given his more acerbic persona) part of his tenure.

But, yeah, not bad bad run of stories.

We did just recently see the fourth return of two old friends who like to snoop around the supernatural. Two inelegant ladies also appeared. They were joined by some tanks who were exploring new power sources. A sapphire lion may have been spotted. He was joined by the Journeyer. Hope that helps.

As far as I know, there's no difference (although I believe I've never seen the 'special').

This one appeared within some other torrent a while back, as a single MP3 file. I took some time to split it back into 12 separate MP3 episodes and tidy up the ID3 tags. I also found the covers (the 3 separate ones, one for each character, and one 'box set' cover), and put it up as a tidier version that can be put onto a CD (at 2 hours long, the single MP3 wouldn't fit).

Tough!

If you're going to go to the hassle of negotiating distribution via a worldwide service like iTunes then you should at least bloody tell people about it.

Seriously?

Tough?

You do understand that the company is a privately owned business that is under no obligation to do what YOU think they should do, right? And that complaining about how they run their business on a thread devoted to posting their stuff without their permission is probably one of the single worst ways to get them to change the way they run said business? It's kind of like breaking into their office and leaving a note on their desk with a complaint about about their business practices.

For one thing, I don't think that the BF stuff is available in all countries in iTunes.

But more importantly, they make significantly less on selling them on iTunes than they would get if people buy the stories directly from them on their own site, cutting out Apple as the middleman and significantly cutting into their profits. But its worth it to them to have them available on iTunes so that people who aren't aware of their J&L stories who happens to search for them might buy them and discover them, leading them to eventually buy more of them from BF directly. In other words, they're basically running these at a lower profit margin with the free advertising making up for the lower profit margin.

As such, it would make absolutely no sense for them to point people to iTunes to buy the stories there instead to give them lower profits. It actually doesn't make any sense for any company selling a product with a very limited appeal to point their own potential customers to an outside distribution source, which take a significant cut out of their profits. That's a very last century way of doing business. It still works for mass-market products with a large customer base. But it doesn't make any sense for a small company making a product with a limited appeal. And you're not going to get a much more limited appeal that an audio spinoff off two characters from one story of a tv show that aired over 35 years ago! Think of their older stories on iTunes as ads for their newer stuff.

Big Finish also mave also negotiated mass-market distribution with Play.com, Amazon, local comic/sci-fi stores and others. And they don't push ANY of these on their website. Quite the contrary. They want to use those methods to get new customers. Then, they want to get those customers to buy directly from them, hence the advertising for their website spoken on EVERY CD and in EVERY booklet.

That's simple good business. Even if you don't like it.

As far as I know, there's no difference (although I believe I've never seen the 'special').

According to BF, the CD release is extended, though they never said by how much.

I'm guessing that your release is one that some fan did, putting all of the parts together into one file. So, ironically, what you did was re-split up the parts that someone else merged together into one file!

If anyone discovers otherwise, please let us know!

Thanks evilmonk. Don't mean to be picky, but those are ePub versions, and I only use PDFs (for the reader app on my phone - don't have enough phone memory to install other apps for other formats).

I guess I could convert them though. Just takes time, as I always go through line-by-line to error-check the whole book.

The last 2 books are also from a different publisher, and can be found here (https://snowbooks.bibliocloud.com/webs/471) and here (https://snowbooks.bibliocloud.com/webs/498). For some reason, the first book seems to be available only as Hardback, and the 2nd book only as Paperback...

I may be going a bit mad, but I vaguely remember reading somewhere in this thread that someone had the ambition to take the respective theme tunes for the one in the cricket outfit, the one in the multi-colored coat, and the one in the sweater vest adorned with ?s and edit them into their first audios instead of them having the theme tune for the one in the scarf. If that's true, could that person maybe provide them sometime? I'd really like that. Thanks!

Nobber
04-27-2012, 07:44 PM
Someone has already done that. Most of the older shared versions are 'remixed' by someone that's put in the appropriate themes and, IIRC, even made a few dialogue edits .

GoldenTalesGeek
04-27-2012, 08:02 PM
What kind of "dialogue edits"...? :erm:

Nobber
04-27-2012, 08:25 PM
IIRC he swapped a few scenes around and, again, IIRC even deleted some ('Storm Warning' springs to mind. The original shared version I heard was ten minutes shorter than the radio edit.) - I *THINK* the ones I'm thinking of were originally released via the old rapid.org - the 'cdmartimus' ones.

I was nervous that he might've just removed some scenes for the sake of it or something. Maybe I'm just paranoid. I personally would've just been content if he had simply edited in the theme tune for the respective Doctor, but to each their own I suppose.

Just found this today, but it's even listed on wiki as a DW/TW spoof, written in Nov 2006. It's short, and odd, but amusing...

TW Parody Script (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/11/06/torchwood/)

And in the latest file-sharing news, this sets a worrying precedent...

Auntie's news page (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-17894176)

It has been suggested that artists and bands who choose to freely distribute their music via this medium (as a form of advertising) may be legally within their rights to counter-sue the music giants due to the removal of a distribution outlet, thus reducing a legitimate income for these unsigned bands from gig ticket sales, as no-one will go to see a band they don't know about...

Speaking of CMS... Those CMS scans (there's a torrent of them) are really worth downloading if you're interested in background information on various stories. I had absolutely no clue that Solicitor Grey in The Highlanders was, in fact, not a fictional character (at least based on a real person) and there were things that I actually assumed were fictional (like the slave ships) that were quite real. That one really helped my enjoyment of that story.

You can find them here, among other places: Mega Collection (http://www.demonoid.ph/details.php?torrent_id=2614306&)

I too would be interested if anyone had this to share. I own the original release with Colin Baker's narration - and indeed, I own all of the missing episode audios - and while I'm interested in hearing the Anneke Wills narration, it's not worth double-dipping on the other titles I already own. If anyone could share it, it would be appreciated.

Well, yes, that's where I got the clip. But as I'm really not interested in the whole episode, I just chopped out the brief clip with VirtualDub.

I actually have quite the little collection of movies/television episodes with DW actors amassing. A few things with Tom Baker, Patrick Troughton, Frazer Hines and David Tennant, in particular.

NileQT1987
05-08-2012, 02:34 PM
You can use it for going frame by frame (that's how I copy my frames for animated .gifs and paste them as layers into Photoshop), if you want to be able to delete content from one frame until another (make sure the video/audio is direct stream copy rather than full processing mode--which will convert the file) or if you have badly out-of-sync audio (I have fixed so many rips that are put up for sharing, despite being grossly out of sync), you can scoot it around under audio/interleaving. Audio from other file is another thing I've had to use from time to time to improve the audio on something. I've also raised the volume on rips from time to time (as you can do it without changing anything about the video stream).

There should be a way to rip DVDs, but I wasn't particularly thrilled with the results in comparison with other programs. Handbrake is so far the most successful ripper I've used (has a weird movement issue with some black & white episodes and angle breaks--I have to replace audio with VirtualDub). A good test episode for the quality of a ripper is whether you see artifacts on Romana when the screen is jumping up and down during the end of episode 4 of State of Decay--you'd be surprised how many programs I tried that weren't half as good as the totally free Handbrake 0.9.3 (last version to support xvid/avi). And none of the programs have half as good of a fully-controllable cropping tool to get rid of the black bars.

You could even lose the black frames from The Dmons! A bit of an audio blip, though, so my personal copy leaves in the black bit (though I've just been inspired to try it again). You certainly gain an insane knowledge of episodes when you're watching for how far in you need to crop to get a perfect 640x480.

jrtxs2001
05-08-2012, 02:48 PM
does it work with avi files?
i have some ideas in my head i want to try but i have never done video editing before

NileQT1987
05-08-2012, 03:25 PM
.avis are probably the files it handles best!

Hallelujah, I just figured out how to remove the 2 black frames from The Dmons and also line up the audio: remove 2 black frames. Save. Open up black frame master copy again. Remove the first 2 frames directly AFTER the black frames. Save. Take the copy without the black frames and go audio/audio from other file and select the second version you saved. Save. This third version will have no black frames and the audio lined up!

NileQT1987
05-08-2012, 08:02 PM
It's more for editing a single file. It doesn't work for a whole bunch of different file sources.

You can piece together clips with Any DVD Converter Professional (not free, but is available for easy pirating--not your best bet for DVD ripping, as it doesn't do 2-pass .avi--just disable video/audio codecs to "original" to get no conversion). There is a combine function. I use this when people split up movies into several CD-sized 700mb chunks, but there's a clean cut in the middle that can be put back together. I also pieced the Recon_Mission .mp4 rips together (with .avi conversion--not a great loss with telesnaps) using this.

Suffice to say, I've got tons of different programs that all do different things.

jrtxs2001
05-08-2012, 09:07 PM
What do you think is the easiest way to do something like that?
Basically, I want to make a fanedit of Doctor Who using different clips from different episodes.
I have a vision in mind but because I don't know much about video editing, I am not sure how to start or what to use.
I am open to any suggestions on software.....my main thing is that it is easy to use....

Thank you for your help!

Once completed, I plan on sharing here although it will take a little while to put together.
