Ok, ok. Watched 5 docs. Now, perhaps they ere having issues in the 3 docs recognizing Omega due to third's mind blocks, but by the time of 5 docs, that is resolved. Yet none of them seem to really know anything more than rumor about who Rassilon really was, or what he was like. So....

The Time Lords do offer the Master a full new regeneration cycle, though everyone does seem to agree true immortality is "impossible". So much for "my people can live forever, barring accidents". And apparently Rassilon is said to have obtained immortality through "perpetual bodily regeneration", though that does see to BE his dead (undead) body there in the tomb. What good's immortality if you can't get up to stretch your legs?

In this story, Susan has obviously aged, but does recognize Gallifrey. And can operate the TARDIS, among other Time Lord-ish seeming things. Just sayin'.

Oh. And the Doc asks which regeneration Davidson is, he says 4th. 1st rteplies "gracious, so there's 5 of me now". If there were others prior to 1st, why bother lying to himself? Lying to companions "I am the Original" I can get, but why to each other?

Perhaps they were afraid of letting slip in front of all the companions, and were trying to keep the ruse up? I'm not sure, really. I've never really been good at trying to justify little things like that.

Is it just me or does anyone else have to listen to Minist*er of chan*ce twice to work out what it's all about. Don't get me wrong I think it's great, just take's me a couple of goes to get into it. I love the Kitty character. She makes me giggle, infact I think they're all great but maybe I need to listen to it all again, especially episode 4, I think I missed something.

I never seem to get the chance to listen to The Munister Of Chunce properly. Indeed, I've still got the last two to listen to.

When I was listening to Ep3 I was out on a little solo-pub-crawl so managed to get completely lost about who was doing what to whom and why.

So I really must give the whole lot a proper listen from the very start.

As a HUGE "Fatality Comes to Temporal Passage" fan, I absolutely LOVE the Minister...but yes, it has taken me a number of listens to really get what's going on. I have no problem with that - I like the complex plot.

Is the interactive CD version of DCTT available anywhere? The one that features the "animation". I recorded the story back when it streamed online, then I bought the CD version, and then they released the good version.

I've been listening to LC DW, around the 100 episode mark, and have once again been impressed by the quality of the writing. On reflection the biggest, and perhaps the only problem with the last season on TV, has been the insistence that each episode is stand alone. 45 mins is really not long enough to develop a decent Doctor story, I am sure that a lot of the criticisms that I, and many others, made would have been addressed if the stories had been given air and time to breath (OK, Rings of A would probably have been a dog no matter what). Also I think that the cliff hanger plays a vital part in the story, like punctuation, and without it everything feels gabbled, rushed and compressed. Here is to hoping that we will be moving away from the 'movie' episode format of the last season next year

By, Gum! But doesn't it feel quiet after eight weeks of watching Who?

Not for me. I just sat and watched the whole of the second half of the series again before it vanished off iPlayer earlier. I have to admit, I enjoyed it a lot more the second time around - apart from Rings.

After what was said just before JH turned round, I'm now convinced, like most of you, that he's the doc who ended the Time War and now can't wait for the special. :)

I feel for you. I had a Newfoundland (called Vangelis because if there was ever a breed of dog that looks like that particular composer, it's Newfs) who passed away years ago. I still haven't got completely over it. I would suggest, if you're planning to get a new cat do it asap. Firstly, it would distract you to whatever degree that's possible. Secondly, if my case is anything to go by, waiting only makes it harder and there's a chance you'll end up never getting another pet. Which is a pity however you look at it.

About the last episode,
now I finally know what's been nagging me the entire time.

It felt like we missed an episode down the line, didn't it?
The GI wasn't foiled time and time again until it felt the need to take drastic actions as it did; River and her part came out of nowhere, there was no real aftermath after the episode before that - does anyone else have that feeling as if we skipped an episode?

About the last episode,
now I finally know what's been nagging me the entire time.

It felt like we missed an episode down the line, didn't it?
The GI wasn't foiled time and time again until it felt the need to take drastic actions as it did; River and her part came out of nowhere, there was no real aftermath after the episode before that - does anyone else have that feeling as if we skipped an episode?

Sounds about right. The GI was never round 'enough' to feel like an on-going threat. River: spot on. And Clara's 'mystery' was only really sledgehammered into the plot where they could. We should have met more Clara's but the run was just too short for it.

Which all still makes me think that something (and I use the phrase lightly) 'went wrong' with the production of S7. It makes me think they'd initially planned for The Clara Conundrum over the whole season - 'A' being where keeps bumping into her and 'B' being the GI+Resolve. But perhaps something like the availability of JLC meant they couldn't have her in time to do the the full run. Hence why '7A' also has a bit of a 'tagged on' feel to it, too.

(I really hope that makes sense)

My cat died in my arms early this morning so just not feeling too jovial at the moment. Strangely enough I then went for a pint or ten. Let's see what happens tomorrow.

So sorry. We run a cat rescue and we've had bad years where 5 died in less than 6 months from various causes. It's never easy. You have my sympathy. I'm a bit bummed myself tonight because we lost a hamster. It looks like one of the others (Leela) killed her.

WOW!

Check out the second entry in the "Fan Intros" section, then try and think of a way to persuade the BBC to use at least the last half of it. Truly awesome work...

Yeah, that's possibly it - the BBC have apparantly blocked it on YouTube, claiming copyright violation or somesuch (despite the fact he's not charging people to look at it, or anything). Personally, I think they're just jealous he did a better job than them at home on his own... ;)

and i will eat my scarf if medics 4-9 are not involved... too many of these type interviews happening

The Fifth Medic retrospective (just the 'documentary' section, not the accompanying serial) has been posted online.

The Fifth Doctor Revisited - Video Dailymotion (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x108n8a_the-fifth-doctor-revisited_shortfilms)

Edit: This version is actually someone's film of the TV screen as the special played. I'm glad to have it, though a 'real' version of the show would be welcome, if anyone happens across one.

Alright, so I've cobbled the first half of the first adventure of the second medic. The Examiner is here. To examine.
RWQ
<!--http://www.sendspace.com/file/rz69ny-->

As for what my main goal with this story is, I'll put that in spoilers in case you want to hear it before seeing all this information.

As it originally was, I feel the story put too much emphasis on the fact that "Oh crap it's the Pepperpots!" And it lessened the impact of the surprise of "I AM YOUR SER-VANT." So what I did was, prior to the big reveal, I dropped as much as I could that would give it away completely. You hear that the medic knows them, you hear that they're incredibly dangerous, and you hear some minor hints "Attachment one... Attachment two... Attachment three," "I wonder if the stick is supposed to act as some sort of hand." But beyond that, you're left wondering what's gotten the medic so riled up. And then you hear that familiar voice, but it's saying something you'd never expect. I think that really strengthens the impact of the story. That also inspired the name of this story. The medic takes on a new identity, for a while, and while pepperpot stories are typically going to have some grand flashy name, the name of a story can really ruin the fun and the mystery involved.

But perhaps something like the availability of JLC meant they couldn't have her in time to do the the full run. Hence why '7A' also has a bit of a 'tagged on' feel to it, too.

(I really hope that makes sense)
it does make a lot of sense. If the splitting of series hadn't happened, we would now be a WHOLE SERIES further on.
7A would've been 7, and 7B would've been 8
but sheerluck takes priority......(sorry do I sound bitter?)

Not in the slightest! :)

Never watched Sherlock beyond the first one. Elementary was far superior.

I have pre-ordered the Gark Matiss reading of "Spheroid of the Delaks" from the above-mentioned A-Go site (less than 3 pounds - bargain!!), so will put it up as soon as I have it...

Looshkin, that is brilliant! Can't wait to hear it. One of my all time faves! Many thanks in advance.

Oooh...have to disagree with you on this one.

I know we're all a little ticked off at Mofff-ffatt for spending far too much time on his "other" show, but I have to say: it is brilliant. As a huge Sheer-luck fan, I was very disappointed in "Elementary".

Taking into account that I've only seen "A Scandul In Pink" ... Felt like 'style over substance' with all the graphics popping-up on screen, Freeman just cannot act beyond his "Tim From Off Of The Office" mode, Cucumberpatch would have suited a period Holmes better, odd pacing as after 45 minutes I was wondering how they were going to pad out the other 45, the "no, we're not gay" joke felt heavy-handed and unnecessary, phoned-in performance from Gattis.

Actually, you know, it's probably not really fair to compare it to Elementary. Sherlock tries to stay more to the original works in characters, where-as in all honesty Elementary is really more like an updated version of Monk in many ways. But even with that, Milller and Liu both out-act the other two, as do the rest of the regulars, the stories work well, and I loved what they did with Adler and Moriarty. (It does help that Natalie Dorma is ... phhhhrrraawooooww!!!)

Hi, I've been trying to attach some examples of my own work which hopefully plug some of the gaps you describe, but I keep getting an error telling me that I have exceeded my quota by 75.4 kb, and I get the same message whether I try to upload one picture or several. I've reduced the sizes but it makes no difference! Clearly I'm doing something wrong, I've checked the FAQ but I seem to be doing things correctly, but I keep hitting the same error. Can anyone help?

Sorry this is in response to Trabisty earlier today requesting LC covers.

Ok I can't seem to fix this problem, so I've attached a link to a new gallery I have created on Deviant Art, these are the first 4 examples of my LC covers, based on four single episode stories. Please let me know what you think, I have more to upload.

Is there anywhere I can get the Fourth Doctor Revisited?

For anyone who like me really enjoys Terr*or of the V*ervo*ids and wondered what it would be like without the trial backbone and deleted scenes reinstated, and made like a LC audio drama

Great work! I've been debating about doing something similar, using some snapshots of the episode with the trial backbone as a single episode story, but also having there be a full fledged non-trial version to fit in later on.

As do I. there really were four stories in s23, and separating them out would give each one its day in the sun.

Hello all, I’m finally back after my extended leave from the internet and I see that the series finale inspired a mixed reaction, personally I thought it was very good apart from the reuse of scenes featuring old medics, I would have preferred several different clips being used, but anything is better than nothing.

It does inspire hope for the anniversary episode.

It’s been a very exciting time for me this past week, as it has been the pinnacle of three months of interviews, medicals and waiting and I will be starting a new career on Monday morning, something I have been wanting to do for some time. Anybody who is looking for work or a change in direction please don’t give up, I know it’s pretty bleak on the job front in the UK at the moment but the main thing is to stay positive.

Redskutter, so sorry for your loss man, our cat was 19 when she passed away last year, I feel your pain.

Interesting article. Yeah, DW was doing what it could on a short schedule and tight budget. However, some of the writers didn't exactly help. "Here's a great idea for a children's SF adventure show; let's kill off all the guest characters until the Doctor is forced to step in and do some killing of his own." "Let's get a fine actor and dress him in the most ludicrous costume we can find. For extra fun, let's give him a really abraisive personality, and an irritating travelling companion. Once we get rid of her, we'll bring in someone worse!" And of course the old favourite, "Let's get really meta and self-congratulatory." That got followed up with just plain confusing.

Trivia: the only way I found out what the hell Ghost Light was about was through a review! Great premise, crap execution. Unless confusing was the point of the exercise...

Recommendation: BBC Radio Series "Pill-grimm"

If this has been shared on here before, my apologies.

Not related to the Medic in any way, I'm afraid, other than that it is BBC produced and is "other-worldly", but I have just fallen in love with the radio drama series "Pill-grimm" (spelled phonetically), by Se*bas*tian Bacz*ki*e*wicz. It follows the adventures of Will*i*am Pal*mer - better known as "Pill-grimm" - supposedly cursed on the road to Canterbury one spring in the late 1100s by the King of the Grey*folk (or Fair*y), for denying the existence of the other*world.

From the BBC introduction:
"Imagine if all the folktales of these islands were true, and their mythical creatures lived all around us, in the shadows under bridges, and in the corner of our vision. Who would protect us? Pill-grimm."

If you haven't heard this, it really is worth a listen. It consists, so far, of four series of four episodes each. Each episode is approximately 45 minutes.

I know I've included quite a bit of information in this posting - I felt I kind of had to, for those who had never heard of it - but I've tried to protect this website by masking some of the spelling. From now on, in order to continue to protect the site, I'll write the episode titles phonetically. If you need to retitle them and can't make out my phonetics, simply google the episode titles, or send me a PM.

Here are episodes 1 and 2 of Series 1: "Hee Hoo Wood Val-ee-ent Bee" and "Thenn Fann-sees Phlee A-wayye". Let me know if you like them, and I'd be happy to upload and post more.

Article about Who in the 80s. The paragraph three from the bottom of this article basically could have been entitled "An open statement to Stephen Moffat from your bosses...the BBC"

BBC News - Was Doctor Who rubbish in the 1980s? (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-22628484)

"Pleasing fans"?? Seriously?? A person who is "pleasing fans" wouldn't be getting so relentlessly BASHED by them!! If anything, to me, the reverse seems to be true for the most part - trying to please modern average audiences, and thus alienating many fans. A balance can be and needs to be found, and, I remain hopeful, will. :S

The following season is a LOT stronger - it starts with an excellent Holmes-penned serial, gains height with one written by Douglas Adams and the rest of it is mostly very enjoyable. Only the final serial of season 16 is a bit padded, but it's certainly all worth sticking with. Time Lady Companion number 1 is a total delight. IMHO, its' Williams' best season. Season 17 has some highlights too (notably City of , er, Killing) but plods a bit in places.

For the B5 fans here, I highly recommend these videos. The first two being the recent 20th Anniversary Reunion the Phoenix Comicon. The third being the memorial video shown during the con.

Comicon P1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGVXg6JnSE0 (sound a bit crap at times, but does improve)
Comicon P2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ek9u-8Eidk
Memorial Video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5KlNEh2Yo4

B5 has always been a very, very, firm favourite of mine and it's no joking or jesting to say that as it aired it really helped me through a bit of a crappy time in my life. So I'm not ashamed to admit that I wept just a bit during the memorial video.

And to the group, has anyone turned up "The Croutons" soundtrack? it's been a bit tricky finding that one.

Hi.

Here are the next ten NA books (31-40) with formatted epub and mobi versions.

It's terrific that you are doing these, I've been hoping for for good quality versions in these formats for ages now. Any plans to do the other ranges eventually (MAs, BBC novels)?

Anyway, many thanks for your hard work - it's greatly appreciated. :)

B5 was superb and highly influential - it may look a little dated now, but still packs a punch, and there's always new stuff to find. JMS: Now there's a man who knew how to plot out an epic arc Even the tie-in novels are part of the story...

I remember watching S1 and thinking it was ok, then a friend lent us the videos of S2 (which hadn't aired here yet), and we watched the whole lot in a DAY. Totally hooked from then on. The only bit I didn't like was the "Byron the Hairy English Psychic" arc in S5 which was, admittedly, forced on JMS after his last minute pick-up by another channel meant he had to fill episodes he'd already rushed to resolve...

B5 and DS9: made the medic-less 90s a lot easier to get through... Thanks for the links, Nobber!

Thanks for the offer. I've got the main "compilation" ones from the seasons, but whilst I'm not fussed about the episode ones, I'm sure others may be.

Talking of the music; "Sleeping In Light" gets me right in the gut every time I hear it.

Same here. So does the sequence in the show where they head back to the station for the last time, just before they self-destruct it.

I will also prepare the MAs because I'm currently reading all the NAs and MAs. This will of course take some time and that's why I have not decided about the EDAs and PDAs yet. But I will not edit the NSA books which are already officially available as ebooks.

because the IDW comic with the 5th medic that was just released was the worst looking and written piece a waffle claptrap i have seen in comics form...

Based on a flawed premise, with dreadfully imprecise (that is, it gets the general, but those characters could be anyone dressed in the costume) artwork. Add to this the fact that it's the barest of interludes rather than anything approaching a story in its own right, and it all sums up to a very disappointing offering.

Thank you so much bulletzen, you are an absolute star.
Can I just post a warning on here, one that I have seen so so many times before, and it is something that I am always in the process of "getting around to doing"
My external hard drive took a knock yesterday and is now making a funny whirring noise and is not connecting to my laptop. End result loss of precious home films, loss of wedding photos including various other pictures and loss of medic audios. It is with a special IT man at the moment who is going to disassemble the hard drive in his clean room and try to repair or recover the data. So I live in hope with the impending knowledge that with success at his end will bring great cost my end. which as I am a full time carer for my Father is going to be a tricky bugger to afford.
In short folks a 2T external back up hard drive that costs 60 quid or a massive loads of heart ache and hassle the choice is yours.
on a cheery note thanks so much again to everybody who participates on this site it really is a god send

Thanks for the new Fate of the Medic, Bulletzen! I just finished listening to it, and I loved it. It was a smart, funny, and a very timey wimey adventure with the 6th Medic. Although, it took me awhile to get used to hearing Nicola Bryant's narration with her native British accent. I was so used to the American accent she used for Peri, mispronunciations and all. Oh, and I also really liked that they didn't sugarcoat any of the bad things Columbus did. Makes things a lot more multi-faceted, in my opinion.

For a LONG time there were rumours that the actor BEN DANIELS had done successful screen tests and been cast. I am not aware of his work, but he was in the House of Cards US series and is apparently well respected.

I would have loved Idris Elba or Paterson Joseph myself. Not that I feel there needs to be a black doctor, I just think they are two very fine British actors that could do wonders in the part. Idris' hollywood star is rising so they have no chance for him, but Paterson was strongly linked when Tennant left and, personally, I wish they had gone with him.

Looking back on Matt's reign...I think his television legacy is as poor as Colin's was. Namely, great Doctor - terrible stories.

One paper is giving odds on Tennant returning...

Tennant is not returning and I say that as a squee girl.

As all the other people, my dear. But if you can't take all this as a joke, it doesn't my fault. Perhaps that is the key to enjoy the show, idk. You know, it's a space alien who wears a bow tie and flies in a police box which is bigger on the inside through all the time and space. If you can't be childish sometime, when can you?

andyb2011
06-02-2013, 12:41 AM
Well, it's been on the cards for a while so it's not exactly come as a surprise. Personally, I won't remember his run as fondly as David Tennant but that's not his fault - he could only do so much with the material he has been given.

You may have meant it as a joke, but the whole 'Fuck You' could easily give offence.

Well, it's been on the cards for a while so it's not exactly come as a surprise. Personally, I won't remember his run as fondly as David Tennant but that's not his fault - he could only do so much with the material he has been given. If the situation continues I can only hope that the next doc can act as well as Matt.

I'd know about it since mid-april, but had hoped either the rumours were wrong or they may have done something else to get him to stay one more season, but from what else I have heard it isn't all happiness in Cardiff :\

hmmmm so end series 7 was 11th docs grave and was 11th docs tardis inside it too, with the huge tardis that had the same broke window that the crashed 11th docs tardis had........................

AHEM just maybe and i prey not but maybe its been cancelled at Xmas and no more as it is THE END? and i really really really hope what i just said is NOT true but put 2 an 2 together about those Tardises and 11ths Grave and Matt now quits etc etc and what does that look like to you?

OR maybe JH is the new 12th doctor, it did say introducing JH as The Docter.........

So sorry about your hard drive. Hopefully the tech guy manages to get everything (or most) back. I have heard that, as a last ditch resort, putting the hard drive in the freezer can help. Also (and I'm sure this isn't the case for you, but others might find this of use) - one of my external hard drive's number/code that Windows uses to recognize it is somehow the same as another hard drive, so if I plug in both at once, Windows will only see one at a time. Took me ages of googling to figure that one out. Ironically, it's the one with my Doctor Who backups on it.

On a lighter note, I work in the same office with our IT guys. I was reading my email which had a link to the sound of a hard drive dying. Out of curiousity, I played it on my speakers - and three IT heads popped up with horrified looks on their faces. I think I gave them heart attacks!

Matt Smith to quit Doctor Who after Christmas special - Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/doctor-who/10093520/Matt-Smith-to-quit-Doctor-Who-after-Christmas-special.html)

This Xmas it seems

Sad. :(

Wasn't there an announcement not that long ago that Matt was staying for another year? I wonder what happened to change things.

As for David Tennant returning, I sincerely doubt it - but it would be interesting storytelling, even if it was just for one episode. I'm sure someone could come up with a clever explanation for the Doctor "regressing" back to a prior regeneration.

that's a bummer if it's true, I swear I just read last week that "Matt Smith is leaving" was yet again a rumour and that both he and JLC were confirmed until 2014.

I guess the future options now are:
a) new actor we don't know who yet
b) JH - depending on how the anniversary pans out
c) DT - not as a regression but either alternate universe DT, so 10.5 or untold stories, like s2 DT with Rose comes to anniversary, does stuff and continues on adventures until he rejoins his timeline. At least I can imagine that as a sort of placeholder
d) damnit it, a series about the time war with PMcG, Jacobi and trapped-back-on-Gallifrey-thanks-to-End-of-Time- Simm, but that's personal wishful thinking, I know. Romana! Masters! 8! Think about the awesomeness!

If it's option a with a new actor, who do you think would make a good one? Or, who do you think it's going to be?

Given Moff''s love affair with the series ... it'll probably be either Cucumberpatch or Martin-Actting-Ability-Of-A-Box-Of-Wheetabix-Freeman he's got lined up ...

Just saw the postings about Matt Smith leaving and that some people are posting some truly nasty comments to him and about him on various sites..

Cue the "Fire the new guy and bring back Matt & Karen" nonsense that we STILL get about David and Billie. Most of this seems to come from the fans who only discovered the show from Eccleston on, btw.

The show changes, characters and actors move on. If you can't abide characters changing, go watch an ignorant soap opera where it's 5 years later and still the same afternoon. I'll be sad to see him go, because he's been marvelous, but I'm also excited to see what the next Doctor will be like.

My take, I've been in the fandom since Peter Davison's era - it's just how the show works. I'm hoping nobody here will be that nasty about the situation.

GETS THE COSTUME RIGHT! .....

......We all have our favourites (Davison and Tennant - I thank you) and some we dont like (McCoy)

I think the general consensus here is that MS has done a fantastic job with some inadequate materiel.
and I've never been that keen on the costume (the bow tie. I liked, but maybe referred to a bit too much in the scripts)

AND NOW....comes the time that I hate myself for seeing patterns in everything......
if PD <=> DT (classic costume, good scripts)
and CB <=> MS (costume an issue, terrible scripts, excec meddling)

then SM <=> 12??

oh dear.....

I cannot even make sense of the first part. Not sure why me not appreciating your post would mean I don't enjoy the show. I love it, TV, books and audio. I don't enjoy Moff's style that much. That is allowed.

A sense of humour, I have. Being able to take a joke or a sly dig, I can. Being randomly told 'fuck you' by somebody I have never interacted with in any way? Grow up.

You know how the show works, you know there isn't really a 'situation', it is normal and expected and just what happens. Some people love Matt, some hate him, nothing nasty to dislike a Doctor and be glad he is going.

I agree with this, I love Matt and think he did a great job. Unfortunately I was never a fan of Moffat and found a lot of the writing to be weak in the Moff and non Moff episodes. Matt saved this era for me and made majority of it enjoyable, if I turned a blind eye to the huge gaping plot holes.

Oh and it will. You are in for a treat, sir. It starts slow, but bear with it. Great show. Episode 5 (Tobias' #1 episode) and Maeby's episode (Either 10 or 11) are my personal favourites.

Up to 7 so far, and yes, it's getting better all the time, running jokes coming together, plots interconnecting perfectly and hilariously, feet firmly found - god, it's good to have it back... The Tobias ep was definitely the best so far. Definitely cheered me up!

It is when it becomes personal and people start slagging a person on non-professional things - cf. the REAL reason SM left Twitter... As I've said before, by all means hate a person's work, but unless you know them personally, it's totally inappropriate to attack them on a personal level, and that's what makes me sick these days...

In theory, Tennant could come back. If Romana could choose her second body could the Doc not decide he liked his previous incarnation and go back - he'd still be 12 but with the body of 10. Honestly can't see it happening tho.

think the bookies may have to be a bit cuter this time round, they got mightily stung when Matt was cast :)

Not another Xmas regeneration , still havent recovered from the last one!
Funny thing about the Doctor, Whoever the actor leaving when it comes to the end , its always like losing a dear friend, grumpy dad or treasured grandfather and knowing you are watching their finally hours , which they are unaware of , still makes for fantastic drama.
The first regeneration right back there with Bill Hartnell was just pure genius.
The Doctor is dead, all hail the Doctor!

Considering the complaints from some of the more, lets say "hormonally lead" fans on Facebook at the thought of Ben Daniels in the role (mainly along the lines of "ugh, he's too ugly!/not cute enough" and "he's too old, the Doctor should be young and cute"), I'd LOVE to see what they made of Gambon :)

And the sad thing is that's the demographic the beeb seems to be aiming the show at nowadays. That's why we'll probably never see an older doc :( I'm still holding out for David Warner.

It is the more casual/younger viewers that keep the show viable. The teenage daughter of a friend of mine was obsessed with Tennant, nobodies daughter was ever obsessed with McCoy. An elderly man who can do nothing athletic is not going to be the next doctor.

Sexy male companion.

The companions can have the will they won't they love affair.

Ian Marter was supposed to be brought as the sexy young thing, but then Tom Baker got cast as the new young Doctor, and suddenly his youth and vitality was redundant.

In the beginning Ian too, and probably every other young bloke playing opposite Hartnell... Even though William Russell was hiding that he was 40 quite well,

In fairness, at the time Russell wasn't really there for his "looks", as such, more that he (and then Purves) could do the "action" parts of the story that Hartnell couldn't.

I'd like to see Ryan Cartwright ('Bones' and 'Alphas') in the role, but I think he'd probably be far too close in personality to both 10 and 11.

Or Damien Lewis.
