For those who missed the Northern Echo's embargo "error"

FOUR decades ago, Dr Who's encounter with the mythical Yeti left a generation of children terrified and enthralled.
The six part serial Web of Fear became one of the best-loved serials of the Patrick Troughton era.
Sadly, in the 1970s the well-travelled time lord faced an enemy far deadlier than the Daleks - BBC beancounters.
In an effort to save money, tapes of classic shows were wiped and recorded over.
In a matter of months some of the Doctor's greatest adventures were lost... seemingly forever.
The Web of Fear is one of the most missed serials, along with another Troughton era adventure, The Power of the Daleks.
But now all six missing episodes have been found - in a dusty storeroom in Nigeria.
The previously lost nine shows were among 11 traced to a television relay station and the find brings back to life an entire six-episode story, while another is almost complete.
The newly found programmes - which introduce the character of Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart, better known to audiences as The Brigadier - will be available on iTunes from today and will later come out on DVD.
Phillip Morris, the director of Television International Enterprises Archive, unearthed the programmes by looking up the records of overseas shipments of tapes made by the BBC.
The stories, The Enemy Of The World (1967) and The Web Of Fear (1968) and both starring Patrick Troughton as the second Doctor, have now been remastered by BBC Worldwide, the corporations commercial arm.
Mr Morris said: I remember wiping the dust off the masking tape on the canisters and my heart missed a beat as I saw the words Doctor Who. When I read the story code, I realised Id found something pretty special. Only one episode of The Enemy Of The World - which featured Deborah Watling as companion Victoria and Frazer Hines, later to find fame in Emmerdale as Jamie - had remained in the archives, so the addition of programmes one, two, four, five and six have completed the story.
Fiona Eastwood, director of consumer products, BBC Worldwide, said: We are thrilled with the recent discovery of The Web Of Fear and The Enemy Of The World and were very happy to be launching re-mastered versions of these treasured episodes to fans as we celebrate the 50th year of Doctor Who. The BBC still had the first edition in the Web Of Fear story, and the new finds mean only number three is missing. The tale introduced Nicholas Courtney as Lethbridge-Stewart, who began with the rank of Colonel but later became Brigadier.
The missing episode has been recreated using 37 still images which were available and the original audio which survived.
Many programmes from the era, along with many classic shows, disappeared as a result of efforts to save space. There are still 27 Doctor Who stories which have not been recovered or for which episodes are missing.
The show celebrates its half-century on November 23.

Love to know why they're being mercurial and not announcing the other finds. Whoever said that this whole fiasco was ego-driven wasn't wrong.

From the Independant:

"Doctor Who fans will raise a Sonic Screwdriver to archivist Phillip Morris, the Indiana Jones of film, whose ceaseless search for lost episodes uncovered two classic stories languishing in Nigeria, made available for download at midnight on Thursday via iTunes.

Viewers might wish the BBC had shipped more of its programming to Africa during the period in which it systematically wiped the jewels in its crown, given the magnificently-preserved condition of the two episodes, which have not been seen for some 45 years.

Morris found The Enemy of the World (1967) and The Web of Fear (1968), both starring Patrick Troughton as the second doctor, gathering dust at a television relay station in Nigeria, after tracking records of BBC overseas shipments.

But this mysterious Saviour of Sci-Fi declined to appear at a Soho screening of the episodes, sending a message from an unnamed distant land which read: “I cannot be with you as the search is endless. My work must continue.”

The six-part Enemy of The World, now complete with the discovery of five lost episodes, bursts with the energy of the Swinging Sixties.

Matt Smith’s latter-day giddy enthusiasm is reflected in Troughton’s playful splashing in the sea when the Tardis lands at sun-kissed Australian beach (actually Littlehampton in Sussex).

The Doctor and his kilted assistants, Jamie (Frazer Hines) and Victoria (Deborah Watling), are soon menaced by a sinister vehicle which floats across the sand. “It’s like a sea monster,” ventures Victoria. “No, it’s a Hovercraft,” the Doctor corrects her.

The fast-paced episode features much gun-play and a daring rescue by helicopter, piloted by plucky agent Astrid.

The Doctor, it emerges, bears a close resemblance to Salamander, a ruthless scientist/politician who claims to have solved global famine by redirecting the sun’s rays but is actually trying to take over the planet.

However, Troughton’s Doctor, sporting a skew-whiff bow-tie and Harry Hill wing collar, would really rather return to the beach than get involved in any saving-the-world heroics, before circumstances force his hand.

There’s a charm to this alien-free story, often lacking in the rebooted series, with its conscious delivery of “blockbuster” episodes to feed a global audience.

Mark Gatiss, a writer for the revived Doctor Who, said had “hoped and prayed” that missing episodes of the six-part Web Of Fear would one day turn up.

It is actually more a case of Doctor Where? as Troughton is nowhere to be seen in episode two, screened to the media.

The Yeti are running amok on the Underground. The Doctor is missing, presumed dead, after soldiers blast the tunnel and the claustrophobic atmosphere builds during the subterranean storyline.

“If only the Doctor would turn up,” bemoans Yeti-expert Professor Travers in a brave episode which proceeds without its title character – a decision forced on the writers when Troughton negotiated an extra week’s holiday for playing the dual role of Salamander in the earlier story.

The characters trapped underground include a newspaper journalist, accused of working for the “gutter press”, who has a reputation for “sensationalism” and “distorting the truth”. The episode aired months before Rupert Murdoch broke into Fleet Street by acquiring the News of the World and The Sun.

Morris, who recovered a total of nine episodes, can’t rest on these welcome additions to the Doctor Who canon – there are 97 more still unaccounted for.

The first four Doctor Who episodes from 1963 will be screened on BBC4 as part of the show's 50th anniversary celebrations next month.

Asked whether viewers might also see the recovered episodes, without having to pay Apple 1.89 per episode or 9.99 to download the complete stories, BBC Worldwide said licence-fee payers had already enjoyed a chance to watch the programmes in the late 60s.

It is the type of commercial deal, with the proceeds being ploughed back into licence fee funds, which the BBC will increasingly pursue under its Director General, Tony Hall.

So with reports of a further cache of Doctor Who episodes locked away in Ethiopia, it’s time for the archive Indiana Jones to spring into action once again."

and from the Times, although the full article is only available to subscribers which I'm not, but it gives enough to say whats going on:

Nine missing episodes of Doctor Who, which had not been seen since they were broadcast 45 years ago, have been discovered in a storeroom in Nigeria.

The episodes, from the era when Patrick Troughton played the Doctor, were feared to be lost for ever, having been wiped by the BBC after transmission, but copies that were initially sent to Hong Kong were discovered in a television relay station 100 miles northeast of the capital Abuja.

They include all five missing episodes from the six-part story The Enemy of the World, set in 2018, in which the Doctor is mistaken for...

Well, as the B has said; you had your chance to watch them for free 40+ years ago. Not born then? Too bad sucka'!

I am sure they will be available via the typical "free" methods soon enough. But at 10 bucks they are a real bargain, especially when you consider the time and resources put into finding them that yield pretty much no results at all until random luck lines up.'

I absolutely endorse everything that has been said about the need for people to purchase these episodes. If it is true that there are other episodes being held back, we do need to show that there is a demand for the episodes and there is a financial case for the BBC to pay (if necessary) to recover the shows. My intention was therefore to buy the downloads today, and then buy the DVDs as soon as they are released - double-purchasing the stories is a small price for the possibility of getting more stories.

However, I live in NZ, and the NZ iTunes store does not have the new episodes available. I've therefore got no way to buy them, and they don't seem to have appeared elsewhere yet. And it is killing me. I realise it's a big ask, but if some kind person could please upload the episodes and PM me a link, it would be greatly appreciated. I promise, if the episodes become available in the NZ iTunes store, I will still buy them, and will buy the DVDs on the day they go on sale.

Thanks.

And I'm sure that the BBC and iTunes are raking in a huge amount of money world-wide as I type.

BTW, we get ripped off in Australia. It costs us $15 Aust per story here, whereas in the UK it's 9.99 pounds and $9.99 US. We are almost parity with the US dollar (even when we were over parity with the US $ we still payed more)

*recons and guy check your PM.

It's not just people who can't use ITunes; there's those that won't use it. I refuse to use the piece of shit - I did install it once and took it straight off after it screwed up all my other media players and after all the bad things I've heard about it lately you couldn't pay me to use it.

It's a shame the beeb couldn't do digital downloads off their own shop.

I don't think it's not wanting a digital download - it's not being able to get one without using ITunes. I do think that if you've already ordered the DVDs, you should get access to the digital download if you want it. Amazon do it with CDs, you buy the CD and you get a download MP3.

Totally agree, although I probably wouldn't be able access it in Oz, like their MP3s.

I've always thought they should throw in a free ebook download when you shell out for a book, too...

Thanks.

I get the impression they are being held back because one of the parties involved wants them released in iTunes the same day it's announced they are returned but the BBC won't release anything unrestored.

So basically as each batch are restored, there's a new announcement. They are all coming eventually, it's just politics behind the scenes means we aren't told of the total haul all at once.

That's just my impression from stuff I've heard anyway.

The beeb have specifically said that they've only received 11 missing episodes. They've obviously released these because they're almost full stories (shame about ep3 of Web not being there). I'm guessing that the remainder are just random eps, but I'd be interested to know which ones.

A while ago, people were wondering why Cosgrove Hall never got asked to animate any more eps
BBC News - How Danger Mouse became king of the TV ratings (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-24429892)

It seems they went belly-up, but are to make a comeback. Fingers crossed ...

They said 9?

BBC News - Doctor Who: Yeti classic among episodes found in Nigeria (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-24467337)

It's 11 if you include episodes found years ago from those 2 stories

The only thing I'd say is all the people on GB who said Yetis and NME were coming out soon with a surprise DVD next month, downloads, etc were spot on with the info and they've also said much more is to come, it's just not returned yet which might simply be that the restoration is being done elsewhere.

Dont forget, everyone lied about having these 2 stories. Not that I blame then one bit as there's no reason why we have to know in advance.

Quality seems fine - it's an mv4 file (that's an mp4 with digital rights management isn't it?)

It's not a replacement for DVD for me, I'll definitely be buying the DVDs as well. But I had an iTunes gift voucher I hadn't used and it allows me to watch them now :)

iTunes was likely chosen as it is the most prevalent distribution system that is currently available online (like it or not). If the files were hosted on a BBC server, it would likely have had to compete with all the other stuff present on that server (website assets, other streaming media, other downloadable content) which would have resulted in some spotty downloads at best and possibly even the simple crash of their content server. Remember how big a deal this is and how tight the Beeb is with their wallets.

I don't want to upset anyone but I really do not think these episodes should be just shared around. At least not for quite a while.

I have to say that I am not going to buy the episodes off iTunes but I will be buying them on DVD, just like I have bought all the rest of the entire DVD collection thus far.

If anyone does not want to use iTunes, or for some reason can not use it, then please just wait and buy the DVD's. Surely, after all the decades that these have been missing, people can afford to wait until next month to see them. I mean, it's not as though we don't already know the stories, so nothing can be spoiled for us. Just wait for the few extra days and enjoy the anticipation.

It is really important to show the BBC that classic Doctor Who is something that we are interested in. If we don't then they will give up on any more animated episodes, special editions, restorations, etc.

And let's face it, once someone has something in digital form, are they really going to spend money to buy it again? I would imagine that a sizeable percentage of people would not.

So to sum up .... just wait and buy them next month.

That's your opinion and choices, and you're entitled to them.

However, I don't see why, as a long standing fan of the show who's been watching and waiting along with everyone else for this, I should not have the opportunity to watch these episodes at the same time as other people simply because I am not part of a set that uses a certain company's piece of software. The programmes were originally broadcast on TV, and could still be. If I don't see it before, I'll have to wait until Feb 2014 to see Web of Fear, whilst you can choose not to watch it now.

The Beeb can put out their output on any platform they wish. If I could use iTunes to purchase the episodes on this computer, I would (begrudgingly), and pay to see the episodes I've waited so long to see. But I can't, and I can't help but feel a little disenfranchised. Others on this good forum clearly feel the same. Apple has begun to behave like Microsoft has and I fully understand their wish not to have iTunes anywhere near their systems.

I've ordered the DVDs as I've ordered all the DVDs that have preceded them.

To sum up, if I have the good fortune through the kindness of others to have a chance to see these episodes now in a drm-stripped digital format, I'll gladly take up the offer and still buy and keep the DVDs.

I'm in two minds about these episodes. I am definately getting the dvds. I'm happy to wait just under 2 months to see Enemy, but I am very tempted to buy Web. I can't really afford to buy it twice as I haven't been in a great place for money lately but it is very tempting. I bet I will buy Web of iTunes as soon as I have viewed the Enemy dvd, and regret it straight after as well. I must admit I hate iTunes myself and avoid using it as much as possible as well.

You know what. I ordered the DVDs last night as I don't have iTunes.... went to work this morning, a work mate was going on about being up til 4 watching web of fear, so I thought "screw it!", took a half day, came home, downloaded iTunes, started to set up an account, got to the email verification bit...THE FUCKER WOULD NOT RECOGNISE MY "APPLE ID AND/OR PASSWORD" THAT I HAD JUST PUT IN!!!!!
spent the next hour going around in the same loop, trying to get it to verify. but nope! wont let me change any details, because its not verified, nor will it let me review what I have actually put, in the event I MAY have missed typed something, which I honestly don't feel I did!
what pisses me off, is that this stupid iTunes account now has my payment details, but no way of me to access it!
Tried to set up another account, but it wont let me because my email is in use with this first account that I cant get in to!!!!!
I have always despised apple, and this does not make me think any different....

And before someone says, get them to send the details to your email, yeah I HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT.....
its not happening because the account is NOT verified, even though they sent the verification mail that wont work to the very same email address!!!

for the love of all that's holy....what is wrong with this world!!!!

and why the hell the BBC used this shower of shite platform is beyond me!

I don't see how you can upset anyone. It's your opinion and you're welcome to it. There's a good chance that these eps will show up - if not here then there are plenty of other sites around, not to mention torrent sites. While I agree it would be a good thing if everyone here went out and bought the download or the DVD, not everyone is able to do so and it should be down to the person's conscience if they want to share it.

I have to say its a shame these were not released on DVD straight away. Vanilla releases would have been fine to get them out quickly and maybe a super-duper version could have come later with all the bells and whistles for those that like that sort of thing. I use itunes for audio files now and then but hate with a capital F using it for video files. I am hoping that there will be a simultaneous release in America but I have not seen anything yet.

I believe that the Beeb were forced into a hasty announcement. Once the story got into one of the nationals, it really had no choice. They rush released it onto iTunes. They would have preferred to wait until November at the earliest so as not to jeopardise on-going negotiations.

My issue with iTunes doesn't lie in the store, but rather with the totally unnecessary bloatware that the developers created just to transfer your files around. I mean it is archived at around 197 megs ... that is a total joke for a file explorer (which is essentially all the iTunes software is).

Also, millions use Windows - that doesn't make it perfect.
To make another analogy; you don't buy a car to drive to your neighbors.

I shall say this once.
That was NOT an attack on you, nor that you have seen it.
It was a rant/complaint at the way that apple run their business and programme their software.
It was nothing personal towards you in anyway.
No I don't like apple, never have, and after my experiences with there software today, never will.
I am not alone either my friend. most of my peers within the technology industry have no time for them either, other than the people I know who do film editing, however even that is changing in some areas.
And actually I NEVER insulted anyone who uses iTunes, I stated that bog standard hardware, with little or no professional software. have no problems, however high end machine with various things in place to prevent corruption and changes to programmes and software, can and indeed do have issues.

Yeah, it's too bad i can't AFFORD to just put aside my issues of being poor and drop a bunch of dough on a new apple product (or product that will support itunes), that I neither want nor need. Even if i did have the money, I would rather use it to buy my broke and hungry friend some groceries. Which is what i did last night. If i had more money I probably would always choose to do more helpful good with it, rather than buy what is (in my humble opinion) a piece of hardware that is not worth it's price. Also, Jawa didn't say that owning one necessarily made you fashion obsessed. What Jawa said is that they "look nice" which is actually a compliment. Remember he was expressing an opinion and last time I checked, we're all allowed to have those. In fact, I like that you have differing opinions, all kinds of people are needed in this world and on this thread. I'm sure this was not meant as any sort of slight against you personally. I do agree with Jawa, but that's my right. I think we all just want to be able to have fair and equal access to this. I might be willing to shell out the dough for the eps, but not for a new device. And yeah, let's kill the apple vs everything else debate as quickly as possible.

I say all of this with love in my heart for you and everyone on this thread - The fact that we can have differing opinions and can still get along, is what makes this world a great place to be in. Jawa is just as entitled to their opinion as you are to yours. I say ALL of this in the hopes that there will be no blood shed on this forum. It's friendly good nature is one of the many reasons that this is my preferred source for DW info and discussion.

Glad you enjoyed the new eps. Thanks BBC for making it so Void could watch these without waiting for DVD, wish I could say the same. But I've waited years already, another day or two is no big deal as far as I'm concerned. But I would like to be able to show my support for the great deal of effort that was put into finding and restoring these lost gems.

And lets not forget that ITunes for operating 100% illegally for years until they hired expensive lawyers to get them out it. Apple were legally not allowed to work within the music business because they used the same name as an existing company that sold music (Apple, the label the Beatles owned)

But they didn't care and just started trading illegally anyway and no-one seems to care as long as they get the downloads. THey could have gone to the courts and asked for a changed first but clearly they think they are above the law.

EDIT: but I'll shut up now :P as other sensibly want to move away from such arguements :D

Wow, I did not mean that comment sarcastically or facetiously at all. I REALLY do thank the BBC for releasing these eps internationally, in an immediately available digital format in time for the 50th Anniversary. I support this as a release model. I wish more things were released in this fashion, and in my opinion it's one of the ways LC has been ahead of the game for a long time. Big comic companies only just started digital download releases. Just wish it was available from multiple sources in multiple formats. Imagine if LC was only avail for certain users and not others. They would make less money. If BBC made it available to all, no matter what software the user preferred, they would stand to make more money. Which is (again in my humble opinion) a better business model.

My comment was not intended to be condescending. Nor was my intention to rain on ANYONE's parade. I really tried to make that abundantly clear many times. Please do not assume any unintended sarcastic connotation.

I'm also gonna step out on a limb here, and ask that you refrain from name calling.

it is nice to see that just because YOU don't like it that you insult those that do like macs as fashion obsessed;

sorry no problems here and frankly i WATCHED the show last night because i don't have any issues unlike others.

I enjoyed my life and didn't bitch about it or insult those that actually like itunes and was able to enjoy my evening and the find or new episodes because i don't have issues with a program that prevented me from doing so. [i was watching the first episode of N-M-E] minutes after the release] Too bad you issues couldn't be put aside so you could have have the same enjoyment.

Something interesting I found... a torrent on TPB purporting to be a "special edition" version of 6 part unfinished TB story. It purports to be an edit by someone going by the moniker "A Fan" of Mr. Levine's version.

The CC with "Jo making a thing..." Was the first Doctor Who audio she listed too (she just turned 11),

She's now listed to most of the CCs and her highlight of her birthday weekend was meeting the sixth medic who "was funnier in person"

So I'm glad for the story (I think of it as the medic meets the muppets...)

Greys Anatomy met the Muppets after a fashion last night.

I did tumble about the ground chortling excessively.

Meredith was giving her usual ultra dramatic voice over for the beginning of the episode, like she does most weeks, about how hard and amazing and complicated and godlike it is to be a surgeon, and then she continues comparing surgery to getting prepared for a bold theatre performance, by saying "It's time to light the lights, It's time to put on makeup, It's time to dress up right. It's time to raise the curtain... Oh no... On the Muppet Show tonight. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I apologise, I have been spending far too much time with my four year old recently."

I'm thrilled to see so much love for this story at the mo'. I like all the Jo tales, but that one is another priceless piece of J Goss high-concept brilliance. Honestly, I dreaded listening to it, but by the time we got to the "Making A Thing" song, I was hooked, and giggling like a schoolboy...

I don't think it's not wanting a digital download - it's not being able to get one without using ITunes. I do think that if you've already ordered the DVDs, you should get access to the digital download if you want it. Amazon do it with CDs, you buy the CD and you get a download MP3.

I haven't looked in for a few days and seemed to have missed things.

I personally cannot afford to buy the downloads and then buy the DVD's which by the looks of things are going to be Vanilla releases.

I am hoping what has been speculated that Web part 3 is needing some extra treatment before they wish to announce it and that its why that is not out til Feb on DVD.

Time to hunt down a decent iPlayer ripper for your OS of choice. I use "Get iPlayer Automator" and it's superb. The downside, of course, is that you still have to keep an eye on the schedule to grab stuff within the 7 day window.

Totally agree, and I apologize if my previous post was a little off-color!

Nope you are fine.
You like everyone have a right to defend yourself when attacked personally.
However you like a few of us, never resorted to personal attacks on people, nor abuse (I took you comments to be witty and sarcastic) so in my book, my friend, makes you like the majority here, a decent person!
Now I know I don't speak for everyone, but personally I say thank you for defending yourself, me and others.... you have a friend and ally in me forever for that!

:( Why do people get so upset by other members opinions, it never ceases to amaze and bemuse me how some members of this forum simply can't understand anyone having an opinion that dosn't mirror their own.

I don't see why valued members of our forum like Looshkin and jawa, both have given much, should feel the need to go elsewhere just to get away from the venom of certain individuals who seem unable to enter a topic of conversation without getting over heated and resorting to foul tirades.

Come guys and girls, the worlds a wonderful place, lighten up and lets enjoy each others opinions. :)

I think my point (clumsily made) is that someone will always disagree with your opinions, no matter what they are. No point getting worked up about it, some people will argue black is white and White is black. Let them rant, they are entitled to an opinion too, it's no skin off my rosy nose whether the views expressed are mad as a box of frogs

It happens. It happened a couple of months ago with ttroy and no doubt it'll happen again in a couple of months from now when somebody feels they need to throw a hissy fit from the safety of their keyboard. The trick is to try and annoy them - arguing just makes things worse.

I suspect that AGo are going to continue the range under the "Destiny" label, possibly with BF producing at first and then 'out-sourcing' to other companies or in-house.

Hi everyone- thought I would pop in- Are we all enjoying the wonderful Patrick Troughton stories???? I'm so pleased that more of his era has finally found its way home- Being so under represented in the archives these have been a real treat- and 9 episodes as well- just how cool is that??? (although a year ago every single 1 of us would have been very excited if just 1 more missing episode had turned up in the Anniversary year). I'm so sad that I bought them off iTunes & have pre ordered the DVD as well-
With all the rumours that have done the rounds over the last 9 months & all the publicity & internet/TV coverage the confirmed return has generated it might just prompt all those collectors/archivists/TV stations to have a search through all those forgotten about dusty cupboards hidden in the corner - and maybe, just maybe someone will find another treat for us all in the future. But until then I will enjoy what we have & be grateful & give Thanks to all those involved in seeking, finding, returning & making available these episodes.

For me this has been the greatest Anniversary treat of them all, I still look forward to the Special on the 23rd of November, but for me, it wont matter how good that may turn out to be, the missing episodes will be the highlight of my 2013

I watched the video that A Fan put up for torrenting last night. I enjoyed it, but I can see why it was rejected for DVD release, just on quality issues if not rights ones.

It really seems to me that the voice acting was phoned in at times, and yeah, Paul Jones is rather terrible.

I managed to purchase them from iTunes (I had to get my brother in Australia to purchase a gift card, then txt me the code for me to use with an Australian account I set up), but then I discovered (because this is the first time I've purchased video from iTunes) just how restrictive the iTunes DRM is. I was facing the prospect of watching it on my 2.5" iPod screen or on my computer. But now I'll be able to sit in comfort and watch them on my TV, free of guilt because I've purchased the episodes and will purchase them again on DVD.

Know what you mean I had a trouble wondering what Doctor was in Invasion of the Dinosaurs as I didn't see it on TV in Oz until the mid 80's (even then it was without the first episode). It would have been better if they'd been allowed to show the Doctor in old stories (but they weren't allowed to, so that people didn't get confused as to who the TV Doctor was, or some such nonsense).

You should find a recon in this torrent: (torrent folder) Doctor Who - The Complete Classic 26 Seasons Collection + Extras ? doctor who ? isoHunt ? the BitTorrent & P2P search engine (http://isohunt.com/torrent_details/478972931/doctor+who?tab=summary)
