Last week's episode of The Goldbergs, young Adam Goldberg was wearing a classic 4th Doctor logo t-shirt. Nice, not sure of the popularity in 1985, but a nice shirt and remembrance of the series back then in the USA.

Cool. I've got a heap of episodes saved, until I have the chance to actually sit down and watch.

I saw the latest Blade Runner the other day. I absolutely loved it. Along with the movie "Get Out" it's my movie(s) of the year. Glad they didn't go the Hollywood "blockbuster" route, but crafted an intelligent movie, one that doesn't rely on big bangs. On a par with the original, in my opinion.

Now, roll on December and say goodbye to Capaldi, as well as the new Star Wars.

Oh, I quite happen to like Star Trek Discovery - a Shame that it's already halfway through this run of episodes.

Oxford Street to Trafalgar Square... Adam wearing a Who Diamond Logo shirt would make sense since most American Who airings in the 1980's started with the Baker era. Most American fans exposure to the other Doctors came when PBS aired the 20th anniversary special in 1983.

Actually, depending upon where you were, it was popular. My college campus had a PBS station attached to its college of journalism. They showed Doctor Who Monday through Saturday from 1983 through at least 1987. Getting a DW T-shirt in a nearby comic book store was possible.

PBS is how I got to see the fourth Medic when I was young - had no idea how long the series was on for but I didn't start watching again until the New Series came on with Ten (as it was on after I put my daughter to bed and before I had to go to work)...

Thanks Sensorite!

I need to spread some love around before I can shower you with same again.

As for PBS (here in the states), that's how I got into 4th Medic back in the day.
Watched his eps, and then, they kinda stopped for awhile (but maybe aired others eventually, but sadly, by then, I had lost track of it).

My next exposure/reminder of WHO was the song "Doctorin' The TRADSI" by KLF/The T!m3L0RD$

Then, a whole lotta nothing until the TV movie in 1996.

Then a whole lot MORE of nothing until 2005.
(Although, I didn't hear about it until 2006)
Sadly, I had to watch the 2005 series-1 several years in a row, because it was on a PBS channel and that was the only season they had access to.

By the time I got around to seeing MORE nu-medic, it was already into 10's or 11's tenure (sadly, i really can't recall... but I THINK it was 11s), but I found sites where I could watch EVERYTHING (all the way back from the 1st two pilots until then-current - including some lost eps that were recreated via animation or telesnaps.
AND Netflix had the current stuff, so I was double-dipping: Classic on my laptop and NU on the telly.
But I was able to experience EVERY episode by binge-watching for MONTHS.

And yes, I've seen every iteration of SHADA. lol
I liked the one that Bom Taker narrated missing scenes, but I really enjoyed the web animated with 8 and Romana.

Sorry for the long post.
It seems like forever since I've been here.

I didn't like the way he narrated it as though he was actually The Doctor but made no other effort to assume the role (like looks or personality). That just didn't work, for me. The McGann version was excellent. I quite enjoyed the Levine version, in spite of everything. I assume the new one will be along the same lines but a much better production without the dodgy voices & embarrassing cheapness.

You know they actually don't.... Hartnell..."History can not be re written.... not one word"..... Moffat era (take your pick) "Time can be re written".
In short, Melody Pond can meet and interact with ANY Doctor, past or present, but the way Who has been written in recent years, the way creation and reality have been set and re set, ANYTHING can have happened, at anytime and nothing will contradict any past event because that time line, that reality is no more, and that is not even taking the time war into account.
In short, the chronology of the show, its own logic, time line and history are null and void, because the Moff has given all future (and past) writers the perfect "get out of jail free" card!

Not just the Moff era either. It's happened plenty of times in the classic series (eg Atlantis in 2 and 3; creation history of pepperpots to name just two).
I reckon anyone jumping around in time and space and getting involved, even if they say they can't do anything to change history, is always going to change history. How many first contact/invasion of earth situations have there been without people knowing aliens exist, at the same time as there being aliens knowingly living among us?

It's just a TV show after all, written by different people over 50+ years. Whoever is in charge can, and does, do whatever they want and makes it canon. Alien/Half-alien, One heart/two hearts, male/female, Scottish/Northern/RP, 12 regens/unlimited regens, 70s UNIT/80s UNIT.....we love or hate it all depending on our own perspective. That's what makes the show so great.

Change my dear, and not a moment too soon!
Och aye, I'm the Doctor sonny, boot maybe not the one you werrrre expecting!

Much as I've liked her in the past, I think BF very quickly overused her to the point where I got a bit fed up of her. Also, I think all the different ways of having her interact with classic Doctors without them learning who she really is is bordering on the ridiculous.

^ Speaking of 'the regular cast,' isn't it about time Ms. Ward finally (and formally) handed the crackling tracker off to Drusilla with a blast of orange light? I know they kinda went back on that last year and she's very attached to the role, but it's getting a little weird with Medic Eight and Mister - what, Sixteen, Seventeen? - and the Time Lady's still on face #2.

Isn't that how they explained away the reversion to II, was that the story with III was an alternate timeline that unhappened after the events of the last Homeworld ?

I haven't listened to the last set yet so I'm assuming that is in there? She was a dreadfully wooden actress in my opinion (even in her BTVS days) so I'm not terribly sad to hear that she's been benched from the role.

Isn't it weird that the Doctor and his friends never change their clothes, or if there is a minor costume jiggle, it's a red letter event?

If the medic's wardrobe is a paradox machine, continually giving him the same clothes from an earlier point in time, without regard to the paradox that each the same shirt lives multisplenderous lives over and over again.

I don't mind the long coat, braces, colours etc but to me it looks like it doesn't fit properly.
Maybe I'm being a bit sexist (I hope not) but I wonder if something a bit more form fitting would look better.
The pants look a bit like a sack or something.
If you're going for a baggy 2nd medic look I think you need to do it without the stylish colours this kit has.

It's quite Asexual, though.

Which, I suppose, could go several ways - especially for the re-gendering detractors. All ready seen/heard comments that "they didn't have the guts to go full girly, so they've dressed her in mens clothes to make it easier to turn back to a man." Guff like that.

Still, it'll be interesting to see if any male CosPlayers dress as her.

It's Rod, Jane and Freddy crossed with Mork from Ork. The outfit she wore in the casting reveal was pretty spot on but this is a mess in my view. It doesn't even look like the designers spent five minutes on it. I was at a convention once where a guy with a beard was dressed as Mirror Universe Uhura so I've no doubt there will be male CosPlayers who dress in this decidedly unadventurous ensemble. It's neither here nor there, really.
Not enough in any direction to truly elicit any initial considered opinion.

It DOES have a unisex feel to it, so there's that middle-of-the-roadness to it.
(VoteSaxon half-jokingly mentioned that the rainbow stripe also gives a nod to LGBTQ)
It ALSO has a retro-vibe that screams 1970s-1980's (Mork being one of them, certainly).
Part of the retro vibe is a (not quite SUB-liminal, but almost hyper-liminal) projection to CLASSIC medics: specifically 4,5,6 & 7 (and maybe 2).

Colorful band reminiscent of 4 (along with the long grey coat)
Overall blandness and "safe" look goes to 5.
Slightly more colorful than need be = 6.
Braces and the shirt that gaudily reminds of the jumper of 7.

Both 7 and 2 had braces and high-waisted pants, so feel free to add 2 to the list if you want to.

My problem is, any Medic could easily go to ANY time period in whatever their standard costume was.
THIS? Not so much.
She won't be strolling about in the 1800's outside of a traveling circus any time soon.

Still, I hope it is just one of a rotating batch of costume choices (ala R0m@n@) because (sexist comment here...) You can't expect a woman to wear the same look every day, can you?

To be fair, Tegan never changed her clothes because, for the whole of her first season, she was on her way to work & after that she was unemployed, skint & cut off from her family after failing to explain about her aunt's shrunken corpse & just turning up at the airport like nothing had happened! Why Turlough never took his uniform off, though, is anyone's guess.

Yeah, Coinhive is a bitcoin miner that a lot of sites have started using. It made headlines in the scene when one (and then more) of the big t0rrent sites started using it. What's annoying about it is that it steals your computer's resources to run the miners to make money for the site, without your permission. And some of them even stay active after you close the site, though they're supposedly not supposed to do that. The Coinhive company blames the sites themselves for not putting a notification on their site that they're doing this or having a way to opt out. But it's pretty clear that this is meant to be done as a stealthy way to make money for both Coinhive and the sites that host them, without their users' knowledge. Luckily, MalwareBytes Premium and other blocker apps can effectively block it. For now, at least.

It makes me wonder if anyone has bothered to scour through CBS's archives or track down which affiliates aired the series to see if copies still exist of the two missing serials from that season. Since searching foreign markets is how the recent recoveries were made it makes me wonder if anyone has considered looking here in the US.

I just read that in 1965 the Beeb sold the entire first season of the Medic to CBS for syndicated run on their affiliates, the first attempt at acquainting American audiences with the Medic. It makes me wonder if anyone has bothered to scour through CBS's archives or track down which affiliates aired the series to see if copies still exist of the two missing serials from that season. Since searching foreign markets is how the recent recoveries were made it makes me wonder if anyone has considered looking here in the US.

From what I've read I think they already have. You've got to understand that most of these episodes were always moved on from place to place. Like take, for example, the Medic in Australia - a story (maybe just an episode at a time) would work it's way from Sydney, to Melbourne, then Hobart etc, until it had done the course of broadcasting throughout Australia. After that, it would go to say, Hong Kong, then to another country. Episodes not suitable to be broadcast in Australia, as there were several at the time, were returned and they would be sent to the next country etc. I think that some of the Third Medic's episodes ended up with Mr Latrine from CBS. Of course, that's not to say there aren't still episodes around - it was the age where communication was basically snail mail, things might have got lost along the way. The short answer is that they have searched the US (though, I'm sure, it would be prudent to continue the search). I know that it is difficult in some cases where TV stations have moved. or a fire has happened, or water damage, buildings have been demolished - all kinds of hurdles.

I know. Also, the censoring that the ABC did for Medic stories, even up to the mid-80's. I guess it's because they used to show it before 6pm. It was only when the videos came out that I saw the things that had been cut out. I also believe that there was also some censoring of the TV movie in '96, and that was shown at night!

I ditto that request. I am missing a lot of Twelve's and a fair few of Eleven's (though I suspect I have all the ones provided). Twelve is where I dropped out of the fandom for a while and so my holes are what I couldn't scrounge up. A lot of old links went dead.

I did notice that some links at that certain Russian place have some of the newer Briggy Moustache books I hadn't seen from my other source on those. A now-defunct torrenter also had some of the short stories not had by my main source (I'm pretty sure I shouldn't be giving that one out).

what is the best audio format m4a, m4b or mp3? I have most of epic conclusion sounds in one or the other of these formats but in some cases I do have duplicate copies of some stories in at least two of those formats or in a single mp3 or in separate tracks like on vinyl. What is the best format of story a single file or 2-4 parts? I want to conserve space on my external drives by disposing of some of my duplicates but I don't know which to keep and which to get rid of. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Personally, I use MP3 Splitter Joiner Pro to put all of mine into one file (minus extras, which I keep elsewhere), convert with dBpoweramp to a uniform size in .mp3 and then chronologize them with all of the other episodes, books, comics, short stories, etc...

I keep the original size and whatever format it came in on another hard drive, though.

My advice: check the bitrate and see which is higher.

webs01

I personally prefer single joined mp3 audios formatted at 128kbs. Doesn't take up to much space, and even though some say that lower bit rate audios sound tinny compared to those at a higher bit rate, personally I've never really noticed a difference in sound quality between audios formatted at 308, 256, or 128. The only difference I've noticed is in how much disk space they use.

Yes I agree, I like to listen to them as episodes too. For the last few years I have been watching and listening to the whole series "in order" an episode a day, including the audios between the TV stories. I don't include books or comics in my own canon, especially as some have been remade as audio. It has take a few years but I'm up to Colin Baker and it has been awesome, like a bucket list thing to do. Its annoying as they keep releasing ones of Doctors I've already listened to (as if I should complain about that!)

I used to keep all my music at 192 as some fool told me that was CD quality, then devices got better and I invested in a good one and and 192 sounded like it was played in the next room compared to 320 which sounded like an orchestra in the room. So I had to rebuy my favourite CDs and rerip to 320. I didn't do flac because of the space it takes but someone I know told me that flac sounds even better and I dread having to do it all over again if the devices get better again as I can't tell the difference at present! 128 sounds like it is underwater to me now!!!

Flac is supposed to be lossless and indistinguishable from the original. 320 is lossy but on my equipment and with my aging ears I'm not sure I can really hear a difference. But when you get down to 128, it can definitely be noticeable even just on laptop speakers.

192 is transparent (aka your ears should not be able to detect higher than that, however, I usually download V0 MP3s myself. V0s are essentially the same as 320 kbps MP3s but silence is not allocated file size if it exists - so you get a smaller file size and the same quality as a 320. V0 is also the mp3 format used by the Scene). You can test your ears on 320, FLAC, V0, 192 etc using the ABX test in Foobar, for example and if you can get it consistently right then it worth getting it in FLAC. Some FLACs aren't what they claim to be. Some 192s might necessarily be what they claim, read https://interviewfor.red/en/spectrals.html for more information. The three key features to discerning if the music is at a fake bitrate is this:
1. The shelf is lower than what it should be, example

2. The shelf is blockier than it should be

3. There are holes inside the spectrum that wouldn't normally be there.

Points 2 and 3 are way less important and less obvious than 1.
Also, if it's supposed to a FLAC but there is a shelf at 16kHz it is a fake FLAC. There are a lot of people who don't know what they are doing so you end up with a lot of fake FLACs and music files that have been converted from one lossy format into another lossy format which degrades the quality of the audio more than a straight lossless to lossy audio. If you were keeping your files at 192 by converting all your audios to it, you might have inadvertently ruined the files by converting them from a lossy format like 320 into 192 rather than doing a straight lossless to lossy conversion. Also some CD rips can have mistakes or are processed with incorrect settings which is why some people are obsessed with log scores on sites like RED which flags mistakes made during the ripping process.

If you download 192 MP3s from those random sites (you know the ones), I believe that a lot of them are using processed rips from sites like Deezer.

Also, if you are downloading vinyl, be aware that the quality of the rip depends on the skill of the person in question and maybe their equipment, so a FLAC can sound like crap. There is also a lot of debate on whether or not WEB or CD rips are better https://interviewfor.red/en/sources.html.

Another thing that you should be aware of is that the people who are making the music don't necessarily know the difference between lossless and lossy music. A lot of the stuff bought from online stores like bandcamp are lossy mastered, aka they are a fake bitrate for example, someone just turned a 320k MP3 into FLAC but no higher quality is available because the musician themselves is not selling it at that quality. There are also folks who know a lot about detecting fake bitrates on sites like RED and you can post in a thread and have your music spectrograms checked for you. (The easiest thing you can do to check point 1 out is to download spec http://spek.cc/ and just drag a music file onto it and it will quickly show you where the shelf is which goes a long way to telling you whether or not the music is real. Now, there are ways of faking spectrograms, one guy on 4chan did it, probably by blurring out the spectrogram using audacity, but usually it's pretty obvious if the spectrogram has been doctored to your ears and also there are other tells on the spectrogram.)

A lot of the information about bitrates and what is undetectable to the human ear was researched by the folks on HydrogenAudio and then people who wanted to get into sites like what.cd had to pass the knowledge test about bitrates and spectrals en masse (and now RED which is the what replacement) which is where the information originated from, so the two best sources of finding out more is checking out the knowledge tab on https://interviewfor.red/en/index.php and reading up on it on hydrogen audio wiki.hydrogenaud.io

I have to take what I can get. Due to a tumour I've lost hearing in my left ear and already wear a hearing-aid in my right ear, so hearing isn't what it used to be. When I was younger I could hear the intake of breath for wind instruments and detect each instrument used in music. Now it's hard, with audio-dramas, to understand some dialogue due to music played "underneath". That said, I will always go for the best quality, even if it takes more space (that's where extra external drives/ thumb drives come in handy).

I also tend to go for the audio in one lump. Having an iPod means I can come back to where I've left the audio (surely there are other mp3 players that can save your position in an audio?). I tend to listen to a chapter or two in one session.

They can't do too many stories set before the first episode of the revival since it's pretty clearly established that Rose takes place not long after his regen (his reaction at his appearance when he looks in the mirror is proof of that) Nine's timeline is the most difficult to squeeze companionless stories into unless they cheat like they have with Five.

And even within the scope of a single episode and without Time Travel involved for the Doc himself, in The Other Side, 9 got like a whole 28 years between 1894 to 1922. All in a story that fits between Dalek and The Long Game (a gap where theoretically no new story should fit).

If there's no gap, crack open a gap. No big deal.

There's no way that the amount of stories that Nine has even constitutes a full year for Rose, much less him. And if we recall, the "year" is actually already almost two years for Jackie. Rose was 18 (probably not quite), not 19, when she took off in 2005. She was born in 1987 (a several-month-old baby in November 1987, even though she was originally supposed to have been born in 1986). By Dalek, Nine is pretending she's 19 only due to messing up his landing. Series 1-4 jump a year ahead until the specials year. 2005-2007 = Rose, circa November 2008 = Martha and 2007 + 2009 (wedding in 2010) = Donna.

Nobody ages in the TARDIS per Vortex Butterflies #2, because of its stasis environment.

There's also nothing that really tells us how many years it's been for the Doctor or Rose. We only know how many years it was for Jackie. The Doctor has a long history of shaving years off his age (Romana called him on it) and there are even jokes now about which calendar he's using. The only time he actually specifies Earth's calendar is in Tomb. There was no way Nine-Eleven were telling the truth about being 900ish (Nine actually says 900 years of time and space, which is an entirely different thing than his age), given that Seven was already 953 in Time and the Rani. Like Sarah Jane, Amy, Rory and other companions, Rose could very well be years older than she legally is on Earth. Rose had the benefit of an extra year to age before she met her legal age again. For Rose, it would be pure guess work on how old she really is. Sarah Jane had no clue if it was 5 or 10 years in the TARDIS. Amy and Rory were 31 when they were supposed to be 23 (not to mention Rory's 2,000 extra years as an Auton). Like with other actors playing younger, this could also allow Rose to age up to Billie's real age (born 1982).

Something I wrote concerning Sarah Jane's own dating conundrum (U.N.I.T. dating alert!):

I just prefer to see it as Sarah Jane traveling with the Doctor from 1973/4 to 1980/1, since 1981 is the next time she's seen and Lavinia was clearly noting that her niece had been gone a lot. Lavinia sounded like she had only just returned. Sarah Jane hadn't even bothered to pick up her crate yet from her aunt, so K-9 and Company happens not long after being dropped off in Aberdeen, except for a new, updated '80s haircut.

I really don't think Sarah Jane was dropped off in 1976. She certainly didn't enter the TARDIS first in 1980. That's not what The Pyramid of Mars suggested to me at all.

It's easier for me to think that there's some unseen adventure during which the Doctor took Sarah Jane back to her own time in 1980 (perhaps even doing a fixed point on her timeline like Rose's missing year or just calculating how many years she'd been with him) before The Pyramids of Mars, even though she was picked up way back in 1973/4. It's never specified for how long she traveled with him in the TARDIS. It's conceivable that Sarah Jane was with the Doctor for 7+ years (it could very well be an estimate based on her physical age), even if it was a shorter amount of time from the TV show's perspective.

Given that actors are almost universally playing younger than they really are, this actually allows companion actors to age up to their real physical ages in a TV-airing time span that is shorter. Sarah Jane's birth date is 1951, despite Elisabeth Sladen being born in 1946. Sarah Jane could very well have made up that 5-year difference and been older than she legally was.

Sarah Jane says in Vortex Butterflies #2 (Ten comic) that, because of its stasis environment, you don't age while in the TARDIS and only outside of it, making aging a much slower process. She also says she traveled with the Doctor "for a long time, relative to [her]". She then estimates she traveled with the Doctor for 5-10 years or more, but honestly doesn't know.

Going by this, Sarah Jane and all the other companions could very well be years older than they look! Companions would have to guess what year they want as their home year if they either need to avoid being gone for too many years, because they don't have an excuse (but suddenly returning years older), want to keep their chosen year relative to their familial ties they maintained or want to return to a year that matches their physical aging.

1980/1 could very well be the latter option for Sarah Jane, who had an excuse already made for Lavinia's benefit that she was traveling for years. She could get away with returning later with a few extra years on her. Some of the other companions needed to be back in time to resume jobs or not be written off as legally deceased/missing.

Amy and Rory actually comment on this phenomenon in series 7. Rory mentions he's 31 (giving Arthur Darvill the benefit of aging his character up to his own age--actors born in 1982 and 1987 were playing characters born in 1989), even though the two of them were 21 when they left with the Doctor. A big deal of this is made in The Power of Three when they talk about how they've aged more than their friends and in The Angels Take Manhattan when Amy is showing off her new glasses. They should be much younger in the timeline they keep going back to (2010-2012, whereas they think they've aged up to 2020) than they have physically aged and experienced, even with the TARDIS stasis shaving some physical years off. Obviously, in our time, 10 years did not pass, but for the characters, it did.

Also regarding 9, there's a short story set during the split second he disappears in Rose which refers to him being "recently regenerated" at the time of the main chunk of the story. Meaning that there's canonically a gap there for countless stories. And if you put one and one together with the age the War Medic puts himself at (800) there's about 100 years between him swanning off and returning seconds later with "did I mention it also travels in time?"

Would any kind soul be able to share the most recent Medic Talk commentary CDs moderated by Mr. Hay-doke?

I am missing the Unworldly Child, Cyber 60s, Adventures in Time, Adventures in Space, the Ta-lons, the Shock of Earth, and the Brink of Disaster.

There WAS a 9 story (tho I don't recall if it was an audio short, a comic or a book - sorry) wherein after R0se tells him that she can't go, and he leaves, he goes to save some little girl on another world and during the course of the adventure 9 and the girl talk and he tells her how special he thinx R0se is (because the little girl reminds him of R0se). The girl convinces him to give Roase a 2nd chance (where he goes back to say "BTW, time machine").

So, there's no telling how many stories he may have had between leaving and then meeting that girl - then returning to Rose.

Exactly. There are plenty of extra adventures to squeeze in without having to make a big explanation - we can always work something out to explain.

Or just give him a solo adventure with no explanation, throw it to the audience and let everyone argue.

Was just over on Facebook and saw a post from LC teasing a follow-up to Eight's confrontation with the Eleven. Didn't give any specifics, just teased they had something in the works.

Yes, bloody good value, especially if outside the UK as mine were only 99c, which is cheaper than 99p. Even if they are old audios. Depending on what people bought it might send a message as to what kind of stories we like.

I resisted *shudder* the urge to buy Minuet in H3ll! That audio I never, ever, want to listen to again (and still it sits here in my collection!!!).
