Just a thought:

Would any of you fans be particularly upset if the 11 --> 12 regeneration scene happened off-camera, between episodes (a la 8th -> 9th)?
I mean, it might be useful to deliberately insert some ambiguity about exactly how old the 11th's body gets prior to the regeneration. Looking ahead, this
could allow Matt the option to return for future crossover episodes no matter how old, bald and fat he might get, without his aging appearance straining the bounds of credibility. It would simply be implied that this was how old he looked before he became 12. (Actually, the thought of a fat MS already strains
credibility).

It's this kind of ambiguity that allows some of us to express the hope/dream/delusion that John Hurt might yet turn out to be an aged, crazed version of 8.

Just got to that episode and, crikey, I see what you mean.

The lass that plays Mary is easy on the eye.

Of the two recovered stories, W.O.Fear is definitely the favourite here. NME feels like it's dragging quite a bit so having to have a decent break between episodes.

Yeah I agree, I think BBC w-wide were being petty not to tidy it up a little and release it. The VHS version is woeful and doesn't fill the gaps well towards the latter episodes. I really enjoyed the animated SHA as it gave the best impression (for me) how it could have flowed.

I mean the animation of the Hartnell/Troughton episodes are not Disney either are they, but they give a much better feel than telesnaps or narration.

In fact although I love the reconstructions, watching NME and enjoying it far more than the soundtrack or the recon shows how big the gap is between them and the real episodes. And although I still loved WOF, it wasn't quite as impressive as my imagination plus the soundtrack.

aged 8 really doesn't make all that much sense to me, from what i gather, the only incarnations that age are the 1st and the last (i deduced last due to the prof. in Shada) and they only age to a certain extent, albeit quite slowly, before they just level off...i mean the 1st doc was 640 some odd years old before he croaked and he only looked about 65, the only doc we really see aging is 11, and that's just around his eyes during the proccession of S6. which makes since considering that, for him, 200 years had gone by from beginning to end.

4 spent hundred of years with Romana, they stated how old he was at least twice and it just randomly increased by 200 years for no reason between two arbitrary utterances.

There could have been hundreds of years between Peri and Mel, and When it was just Nyssa and the Doctor, again we don't know much about her life cycle.

That's my take, too.

"Your appearance has changed before: it will change again." - from The War Games. Moffat does like to play with words, and we know he's tried to connect 11th to 2nd. So Hurt becomes a transformed 2nd who regenerates due to trauma into Pertwee.

Or, worse (IMHO), Hurt is pre-Hartnell. That would get on my tits.

But I'm going to put someone else's money where my mouth is and bet that Hurt isn't connected to 8th/9th cross-over. It's too easy and, if nothing else, Moffat thinks he's far cleverer than that.

I think Moffat would have a more long term solution in mind for the regeneration limit. He was quoted as saying he wants to set it up for the next 50 years and playing around with the precise nature of the first two incarnations of Doctor would give you two extra regenerations at best. I still think the best way around it is to say that it's a Timelord imposed limit and without them the number of possible regenerations is infinite.

kimekaro
10-14-2013, 04:40 PM
Or, worse (IMHO), Hurt is pre-Hartnell. That would get on my tits.

From what I am aware of the 50th story, it will involve the Time War, which happened during the 8-9 era. I guess it is possible he could be Medic#0, but am going to put my bet on the whole "#2 didn't count" idea.

Its a pity that they introduced the Master in the new series.
Imagine this for a second...
Eccles Cake WAS prepared to come back, and we had a new medic "3 medics" deal going on.
The story is telling us something about the time war and all that jazz, somewhere in the story they open a cell or prison, in there is Medic 8!
It then transpires all the medics we have seen since the revival are actually the Master, who some how in the time war, kind of ended up thinking he was the medic!!
He carried on believing he was the medic, we as viewers thought he was, but he was actually the Master.
We would then have a major threat, because the three masters would remember who they are somehow and all hell would break loose, in which medic 8 would defeat them but be so badly injured he regenerated into PC who would now actually be the 9th Medic and not the 12th!!!!

Imagine the uproar THAT would cause, but would it not be glorious!!!!!

That's the problem with rejigging continuity. You never know if the executive producer has remembered every line of dialogue he's tampering with.

No, it still works if you consider the Hurt doctor as, essentially, 2nd in disguise. He's the same man with a new face, a re-spray rather than a rebuild, as it were.

I can't believe we're actually considering these possibilities although you can never really know when the muffet is involved! How can PT NOT be 2 and how can JP NOT be 3... Honestly, I hope there's another solution. Then again, what could it be? Pre-hartnell? So what? the 1st medic is in the time war and then backpedals through his own time stream and starts over? Then again could account for hartnell being such so sour and not knowing much about pilotting the tardis... so is susan rescuted pre-timelock or a soldier in the way? In any case, that'll really mess up canon and everytime someone does that I can't help but feel sorry for previous writers who built the whole whoniverse in the first place. Just stay in the same universe!!! Oh this is just getting messy better stop typing!
BTW wb goldie. I'm also very happy to see the frum is calmer than it has been in weeks :)

Bad enough that I have been cut off from the net due to travel for a few oh-so-crucial days but I return to my favourite place in all of online to find 5+ pages of.....
well thankfully the "who has got a better computer" thing is over.
we get recovered episodes of PT, PTffs!, and this place descends into bickering.....what would the Medic think of us?
but then....oh my oh my!
thanks going out to quitefrequently and wall1885 and someone else who I have forgotten for, I think, the new CC (soz whoever you are, but pages to read through and its nearly midnight)
and the return of Goldie!! YAY!!
glad to have you back my dear!
I will welcome any and all here who revel in the glory of the Medic and his spirit!

on a sadder not....I'm all caught up (apart from these new wonders I now have to watch/listen to). My epic listen is done I am up to date with the releases so my accustomed 2 or 3 new stories per week listen now has to drop down 2 or 3 per month!!

I shall be lost and bereft!

Is that the sort of thing, that makes the Great lord Toad so disliked? You think? No, couldn't be that :)

Spoilers on his latest 'remastered episodes'
pros:
the anime isn't jarring, and flows nicely with the episodes,
the story is complete.
cons:
the voice actors are not the original stars,
the voices are recorded at a different speed to the episode audio,
He or who has created the show - has blatantly used the BBC's latest, clean version of the video episodes,
Its in various sizes and quite large

So find it, beg for it, borrow it, but don't expect it ever to be 'officially released', and remember the mercurial, temperamental Great Toad, is likely to sue anyone who uploads, distributes or dislikes his 'little project'

Spoilers on his latest 'remastered episodes'

Going to have to disagree on the animation aspect. The actual illustrations used aren't too bad when not in 'close-up' (can we all say 'pixelation'?), but the movement is terrible.

As a 'proof of concept' I might give it a grudging pass.

But not as a finished product.

And it's sort-a-kind-a pointless if you're not going to get TB and LW back in to re-record their parts. Especially after LC did such a good job with their version with PMcG and LW.

EDIT TO ADD - You know, it's actually a bit of a shame that Mr L hasn't really got the required skills to bring this sort of thing off properly. It's obvious the chap certainly has the Creative Vision, but not the skills to bring them to life or to see when it doesn't work properly when done by others.

wait for the 'romana shuffle' in episode 6, the single drawing walks backwards and forwards without moving her legs..... it's on par with low grade cartoons of the late 50's, when they were drawn by hand and filmed in stop motion... this should have been done by computer animation and matte masking.

Agreed. Just as the range feels to get some renewed vigour into it, they decide to can it.

As for the CC - I keep seeing people on twitter saying how chilling it is, how scary, etc etc ... I agree that it's all well played, sounds superb, and the story isn't too bad, but never felt particularly 'chilled' by it or even vaguely 'scared'.

I definitely had ... not MORE expectations but different at least - due to the feedback I had been hearing about it. Also Mr. Pepperpot played it up a lot in the LCPodcast recently. So that may influence at least some peoples view of it.

It is creepy, and it very much COULD have gone into the totally scary realm of story, but I think when they started adding more characters than Ms. Grant, it killed the tension. Note I am not saying it killed the Story, just the whole "she is totally alone" aspect of it.

I can’t believe I’ve just spent an hour of my life on this crap, ok Shada was quiet enjoyable in some ways, but the rest was just awful, after the yellow fever clip I was left with a burning sensation in my eyes and by the time I had sat through Destiny of the medic I was dribbling and rocking back and forth, but god help me I stuck it out and made it through to the end.

With the exception of Shada, the animation is at it’s best very poor, I would say childish but I feel a child could do better.

I was a little shocked to see Sylvest MaCaw reprising his role as Medic 7 in the Destiny of the Medic clip, but even that didn’t stop it being a cringe fest, though the two time lords made me chuckle. The Panopticon set was quiet impressive though.

I doubt Mr Le grape vine reads our forum but if you are reading this Ian, please don’t take offence, your animations may be puerile at best, but even I can’t fault your dedication to the show.

Or Bishop Whotsisface in Rain Of Terror.

And why choose the face of someone that shot you?

After the first time I watched "Lazurus" that regens worked on the scrambling of DNA, 10 hints that Dr. Lazurus' experiment is vaugley similar to regeneration only (really faulty and screwed up), and clearly states that the monster Lazurus became was due to his genetic potential. So it would make sense that proper regenerations work on a similar principle in terms of genetic potential, so the odds of landing on a face that someone else in the cosmos has shouldn't be too shocking. I know Romana chose too look like Princess Astra, but the Doctor is usually out cold or drowsy, and when all is said and done he seems surprised by the out come so I think he lets the dice fall where they may.

RowanMorgaine13
10-16-2013, 04:40 AM
Whatever explanation they come up with regarding the regeneration(s), I hope it blows the limit away completely, rather than just squeezing in one or two extras. That way, those nervous fans can stop worrying and having periodic panic attacks over their belief that the BBC will end the show the moment the last regeneration is up.

It's scary but the guy genuinely thinks he deserves to be treated as if he is above us all and we lesser beings have to accept his word as law.... because he saved some episodes.

Ill never forget his "I won a Brit award so show me some respect" rant on GB. Even if you buy into that utter nonsense, it was funny how it was pointed out that the song "he" won it for had virtually none of his original production on it as it was radically remixed for single release and it was awarded to Take That anyway. Yes, Ian a song you produced won an award. Big fucking deal, doesn't give you a free pass to treat others like shit.

Cannot stand people who claim to be Doctor Who fans but act like the pompous bullies the Doctor defeats. Sorry for my rant guys, I shall stop now :P

My theory on the regeneration limit is that perhaps it was removed during the Time War. After all, dead Time Lords (such as the Master) were resurrected and brought into the war, so why wouldn't the higher ups not deem it necessary to forgo the regeneration limit completely, having soldiers that endlessly regenerate during battle? And being the only survivor at the end, perhaps the Doctor's limit had not been reinstated.
Then there's always this interesting line from the SJA episode Death of the Doctor:

CLYDE: Even your eyes are different. It's weird, cos I thought the eyes would stay the same. Can you change colour or are you always white?
DOCTOR: I could be anything.
CLYDE: And is there a limit? How many times can you change?
DOCTOR: Five hundred and seven.

Was the Doctor merely being flippant to avoid the question, or is the random given number a way of saying that it could be any number of times?
Of course, some fans who like to play with numbers would say that the number given, 507, was just a roundabout way of saying 12. (5+0+7=12)

Either way, whether the limit is still in place or not, i'm sure a way will be brought up to go around it when the time comes.

I don't know Mr Leveen, though of course I know of him. He's a curious character but his love for the show is way beyond doubt. Regardless of his insufferable ego (which you can choose to ignore, you know?), he has done a lot over the years to deliver joy to Whoo fans and to turn that round and slate him is spoiled and, ultimately, lacks dignity. Slagging off some dodgy video he's privately commissioned is a nonsense - there is plenty of truly embarassing garbage churned out on message boards in the name of "fan art" which other posters rush to praise for fear of dinting someone's ego... The fact is he's put HIS money where his mouth is to entertain himself. Fair play. I think the personal badmouthing should stop - particularly that regarding his weight, his mental health and his strange lisp-cum-mouthful-of-mummy's-tit voice... I agree he can be absolutely infuriating, but so can YOU (just ask your wife / mother / civil partner / rubber dolly / cat / Playstation).

[QUOTE=looshkin;2491166]THEY ALSO AREN'T REAL FANS IF THEY WEREN'T ALIVE WHEN IT STARTED...........,

Yet again 'us' Aussies have the upper hand:

'Doctor Who in Australia'

Doctor Who was first broadcast in Australia by ABW-2, the Perth station of the national broadcaster, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) on Tuesday 12 January 1965.[1] The episodes were transported to Australia by the BBC in the form of 16mm black and white film (one per episode), if simultaneous broadcasts were wanted the ABC had to make copies to send around the country to be screened by local transmitters, as until the later 1960s there was no uniform national broadcast network. In many instances the episodes were physically transported from city to city and so shown in each on different dates. For example after screening in Perth the first episode, An Unearthly Child was screened in the Sydney area on Friday 15 January 1965; in the Brisbane area on the 22nd; in Melbourne, 20 February. As a result different areas saw different episodes on different days, or even weeks apart. Later improvements in the capacity of cable or microwave and other broadcasting links, enabled the ABC to broadcast on an increasingly national basis. But even into the 1970s the screenings could be weeks apart, the first screening of Jon Pertwee's Third Doctor was first in Melbourne, 11 July 1971, followed by Sydney on 1 August.

Therefore any Australians here, born before or about January 1 1965... fulfill Lord Toad's outburst, as true fans [UK fans need to be 5 years older :) ]
At last an advantage for being a 'crinkly :)

It can stay out and not come back.
....

The first couple weren't too bad when they stuck to the "political intrigue" ideas.

I think my main gripe with the series is that storylines for The Savage always felt a bit 'bolted on'. It was always, IMHO, a bit of an odd TV story choice to leave her there, and trying to bring that idea to life shows that it was a bit of a mistake.

At at fiver each for the earlier ones? I'd say so. The first two series aren't too bad. Three looses its way a bit, but not terrible and does have Mary Tamm. Which is nice.

I'd wait for the new boxsets to drop in price, though.

They're aren't the best thing LC has ever produced, but they're certainly not the worse (GLess ... Yes ... I'm looking at you. Don't try and hide behind Veenarr!) - they're Sunday Afternoon Nothing Else To Do listening.

Mostly Harmless.

I didn't like the "school" idea.

Homeworld predates from the series maybe, where this happened, but the first thing this head mistress would have had to have done to all the aliens, was to grab each new student by the kidneys and thrust their crown into the untempred schism until their brain became time sensitive.

Wishy washy aliens in the PTA may perceive that as child abuse and rise a minor stink.

Oh.

And if Timelord technology is super secret, why dole it out by the bucket to alien children?

The entire plotline did not make sense.

It was never dwelt upon why The Master could regenerate, it doesn't have to be this twiddly/wibbly thing I fear Moffat is trying to make it. I like the idea of it being a self-imposed limit/law set by the timelords, and as the great 2nd medic stated that they can live forever, barring accidents.

Everytime I watch that ep. It comes across that the Doctor is just randomly picking a number, I mean they're fleeing from the bad guys in an air duct that the Doctor has to traverse backwards all while being asked rather irrelevent questions about his personal life by a teenager. Plus if you do anything to alter or augment established cannon of a main character of a show, you shouldn't do it on a spin off.

Hi again.

Here is another series of formatted epub/mobi books: LCs sh'ort tri'ps 1-29.

There is also an updated version of the MA books. I found out that the calibre conversion from epub to mobi ignored some of the formattings (mainly image sizes), so I switched to kindlegen instead. I also reviewed the files with my newest set of regexes and fixed some more minor errors.

I think I have now formatted all the original books of the classic series. You can find reference links on the "other site".
Many thanks to the original uploaders who provided the pdf versions.

It's odd to hear, maybe, finally, her actual speaking voice.

A far step from Drusilla.

True. As a writer of individual episodes he's superb and got an excellent cast together. But his long-term arc has been a mess that he's made far too complicated for its own good.

Personally I found that the "movie in 45 minutes" format didn't really work. Much of the time they felt rushed, trying to cram far too story into such a short time that lead to cases where only the main beats of the story were hit without the build-up. But they did show that that they could probably do a run of 7x(2x45m stories) and have a great run.

I just hope we go back to a good run of stories that may/or-may-not run into each, but full enjoyment of the series isn't dependent on you having to watch every story for every little detail.

My own view on this is simply "If the entire episode is a long buildup to how big a problem something is, and then the Medic defeats the monster in 5-6 minutes, that story and the monster itself was cheated of a lot of the impact it deserved.". Not to mention the fact that it takes the Medic and turns him into some sort of superman figure who was only acting like he was in trouble to build suspense.

I want to stress I do not blame the actors (DT to some extent and MS primarily) for this - they do a great job getting their character across as well as possible in stories where a new location, monster, evil scheme, variety of romance options and a solution to the whole problem must be shown in the period of 45 minutes.

Hi again.

Here is another series of formatted epub/mobi books: LCs sh'ort tri'ps 1-29.
The archive is encrypted because of a strange problem with 4shared. It contains one story, which they did not like (it is included in 27 and 29). The archive was moved into quarantine because of that story.

So, I'm just catching up on the last few months of LC during my short holiday, and I've just finished - and must say was pleasantly surprised by - Pepperpots Around Uss. It had a lot to wrap up, and I thought Barnes (who is usually good value - loved his 8th Medic DotD story) managed very well, and made it all not seem too convoluted. Nice to actually be surprised by the appearance of a certain character at the end of part one, in a clever twist, and the PPots were well - and sparingly - used.

Downsides: Shockingly over-the-top German accents, no real revelations regarding what's up with Arrow Willsmith, and NB scoring himself an extra, pivotal role again...

All in all, far better that I was expecting, a step up from the first 2 parts of the trilogy, and a satisfying wrap-up for the Klyne 'mystery', without completely finishing her story. What did other folks think?

Thanks for Home Planet VI goldie, I’ll give it a go.

Since series 4 LC have seemed hell bent on weaving this series into the official history, but I have a feeling that the fiftieth will have some revelations that will blow this whole series out of the water.

Great trilogy all-round, I thought.

Oddly enough I was OK with NB in the last one. He even managed to be a bit 'chilling' now and then.

But I'm not sure there really is a mystery to Willsmith, is there? Isn't he just a story patsy? A bit of mild comic relief and someone the audience can use to 'translate' any bafflegab? He, sort of, reminded me of a male version of Jo. I really didn't like the character at first, but he certainly grew on me and there's no complaint from Nobber Towers if he pops back now and then.

Yeah, I don't mind him either - he's certainly become more likable, unlike Jeremy from the Bletts radio plays, whom he primarily resembled - and you may be right there's nothing more to him, but every so often, right from the beginning, there seemed to be little verbal hints from the Doctor, etc, that there may be more to him than meets the eye - perhaps some kind of destiny, or his relationship to Kliyne is more complicated than it seems, something our ever-omniscient 7th Medic knows about. But, like I said, I could be completely over-thinking things... :)

Glad I'm not the only one who liked it - hope we get more of this TARDIS team in the future...

I think I see what you mean. 7th does have a tendency to towards, shall we say, "long term planning" for his companions. Look at Hex, for instance.

What I liked about this trilogy is that it subtly starts setting up 7th nicely for his regeneration. He knows that this part of his life is coming to an end and he's starting to wonder about the need for him to manipulate things quite so much. Has he begun to overplay his hand a bit too often?

Which is superb on many levels. If McC decides it really is time to pack it all in, LC have given him (and us) a good avenue to go down that ends with his final scene setting down to listen to some light jazz and read "The Time Machine."

Willsmith grew on me considerably over that trilogy. I wouldn't mind hearing more from him.
He struck me (and I can't remember the original dating of the first part of the trilogy) as the grown up version of Flowella's assistant from the SJA ghosthunting trip

It's fresh in the minds of the public.

Unless, as a foreign audience, you're catering to a lot of people who don't subscribe to BBCA?

I assume you're talking to me.
We're showing it first because of all the Classic Doctor eye candy it has, we figured it was a good springboard for delving into Nu and Classic Who alike. Since it starts with the Doctor stealing the TARDIS next months episode will be An Unearthly Child. There's a linear line of thought there... After that it's random selection of eps.
And our time allotment for DW Night is an hour and a half, that limits what classic eps we can show (we're trying to figure out what classics are short enough). And makes it wise to show a Nu ep right off the bat (since they're roughly 42 mins.) and what better one to choose then the ep. preceding the 50th anniversary?

Nah, can't get exited about the so called main event, probably going to be a huge disapointment, but hope I'm wrong.
At least with aAiSaT it comes from the pen of a writer with a proven track record, someone with a deep knowledge and understanding of the show, not to mention the love.

The trouble with Moff is his inconsistancy, when he's good he's fantastic, but boy when he's bad I'd sooner watch paint dry.

Oh, and you really wouldn't, not without severe repremand and punishment duty, not to mention being banished fron the TV room forever. :)
