type that out, and replace the red text with the text you want hidden.

Thank sashabot - this helps a lot with hiding text.

What I'm still trying to figure out is the whole "RWQ" thing. Many posters type the name of whatever they have available, followed by the phrase "RWQ". How do I respond if I am interested in downloading/trading with them? Is it just a straight PM?

So sorry for all these newbie questions; as I mentioned, I do have a lot that I'd love to share, but want to get to know the basics first.

You don't need to PM anyone, just click the "Reply with quote" bottom down there on the right, and in the box that opens whatever is between the will be visible.
Then just copy and paste into a new browser window and bob's your uncle.

Try it now;

I enjoyed it actually. Had some neat twists in it. But then again, I enjoyed the two series you just mentioned as well.

I got very frustrated with the K2Tgurls.

Appreciate that they wanted to do something 'adult' and away from Who, but they seemed to do it in a very obvious "HAY!! Look at us! We're doing WHO in An Adult Way!!" that really never quite worked for me. It felt like they were flipping between pushing the envelope too hard (some of the violence, implied sex scenes, implied infanticide) and NOT pushing hard enough (er - see previous examples. Apart from the infanticide)

Which is a bit of a shame as there were potentially some good stories in there with some great actors (even though the two leads do sound too similar at times).

Dgrys were a surprise.....

Apart from the Christmas one. My general dislike of Mr B as an actor aside, the characters and their universes just don't work well together. DG's is a one where 'magic' trumps all. SH's universe has no place for 'magic'.

Quick thoughts on the new spin-off ...

Don't think I'll be jumping up and down impatiently for the next one.

For me it makes the mistake of just being ... dull ... I had to stop and rewind a few times as I'd realised that just stopped listening. It wasn't good enough to hold my attention all the time, and it wasn't bad enough that I was listening to see if it got worse/better. Even the acting was pedestrian.

Though it was fun playing "spot the James Horner" pastiches in some of the music. (I'm guessing by the large orchestrated style, that I"m starting to find over-used, it's a Robertson score?)

Haven't had chance to listen to it yet, but kind of expected it. Personally I think they're over-extending themselves with all the spin-offs. There are only so many writers and they seem to be trying to put too many stories out each month, with mixed results.

I wonder if they're hedging their bets? Preparing to do what Virgin did with their Benny line of novels, in case the Beeb decide to not renew their license to DW the way they've not renewed so many licenses once things started looking profitable over the years.

With Audio Go now doing quality work: Tom finally on-board, and who knows what they may get sorted with David and Chris in future. IT's a possibility.

Can't see them loosing the licence any-time soon.

I think it's more that that they just want to do something different now and then (*) and not be 'shackled' to the DW framework and the 'clearance/compliance' they have to go through each time.

(*) It *must* get a bit tiring every so often, even as a big uber-fan, when you sit down and think "Oh. Doing Who. Again."

I think it's quite the contrary. The audio go stuff is now being produced by them so they are seen as the go to people to produce DW audios. If anything, should the nu-whos start doing cast audios, BF will be doing them under the audio go umbrella

I know the Destiny series is being produced by BF for AG, but have they now taken the role for all the AG new DW releases?

Which is potentially worrying in-so-far-as they really risk spreading themselves very thin.

And although purists may argue that Smallvillie doesn't make much sense if you compare it to the comics, they certainly managed to carve out their own niche in the Superman mythos and, from what I remember, it was fairly internally-consistent at least.

So I think I'll give CW the benefit of the doubt for now.

Not everything they do is shite though. Afterall, they made Smallville and now Arrow. Not exactly high-brow, I know, but bloody good fun.

i agree, i LOVE a lot the CW productions, but they royally F**KED UP Arrow...the entire story is COMPLETELY wrong & the new guy is NOWHERE near as good as Hartley, Hartley was made for the role.

Yeah, USB sticks are all well and good, and I don't know about the rest of you but I have around 42gb of audio stories and that's with everything at a bit rate of 128kbps for a smaller filesize, so that's why I have everything on an external drive and back up now and again onto dl dvds. Ooo. That's not good.

When ever I use a proper camera (as opposed to the phone's camera) I use a new SD card for each event, duplicated, and never used to write to again. (On some I've even super-glued the 'write protect'. That's possibly getting just a bit too paranoid, though.)

Depending on what I'm doing I tend to use lots of small cards (512mb cards are stupidly cheap) rather than larger ones just in-case there's a problem with the card at the time. Only loose a few rather than the lot.

Whether You like Arrow or not you may want to start watching cause in addition to Dr Who/Torchwood's Captain Jack Harkness's John Barrowman & Colin Salmon aka Dr Who's Dr Moon, Alex Kingston aka River Song has signed on to play Laural's Mother! as I like to call it Doctor Who's Seal of approval for the show! and I cant wait for Alex's Appearances on it!

Surprised the BBC/A-Go let that stay live. They're obviously relaxed (for want of a better word) over the use of the original audio, footage and telesnaps, but you think they'd be more protective over the new recordings.

I've never been a particular fan of the CCs (as in I don't miss them one doesn't turn up one month) but it'll be a loss as they can be, now and then, great short stories. The new 'Early Adventures' (stupid name) sort-of replaces them but as they're going to be B&W era ONLY that means no more Pertwee-era stories.

The Lost Stories coming to an end is hardly a surprise.

G had run it's course at the end of S3, IMHO, so not really too fussed about that.

Yeah, I prefer the full cast audios, so not too bothered about the CCs; hope they finally get home and sort things out properly in G and gonna miss the LS but suppose there are only so many old scripts suitable to be made into audios. Shame they couldn't include the Pertwee era in the Early adventures tho.

Hmmm- press release does say that the CC's will end their "monthly" run - which suggests they haven't dispensed with them entirely. Perhaps they're planning shorter seasons rather than ones that run 12 months of the year. I wouldn't mind that, together with TEA. Um, if you follow the acronym. Completely agree about G, although am intrigued to see where they take the stories for seasons 5 & 6.

Well we knew LS was going to be done for a long while know. It was announced that G was going to conclude after 5 and 6 so that's not really news. Which makes me suspicious. The news article links to the preorder page for the stories. They're going to sell for the same as the monthly adventures which stands to reason since they're four parters. What isn't mentioned is whether or not they're a monthly series. If they are, then what they did was replace a less expensive product with a more expensive one. So they announce that LS and G are concluding and the money will even out? The third medic gets left behind? I've not listened to the LS ones yet but I suspect I would like them better than the hit or miss CCs simply because full cast is the way to go. So it's a win but potentially more money out of pocket...

Nobber

What gets me is the line

“It’s always sad to say goodbye to something, especially if they are popular,” says Nicholas Briggs.

(my emphasis) - if they're POPULAR, then why end the line? Especially as it now means that they'll be no more 'short stories'. Whilst the CCs aren't my favourites, there's times I just don't want to spend two hours listening to a full-cast and a CC/Short-Trip is the perfect little amuse-bouche.

Unless, of course, the CC/Short-Trip format is being handed over to AudioGo instead?

Puthkins
02-08-2013, 09:39 PM
I am in two minds about it. I enjoy the CC, but they are not my favourite. Mixing narrating with full drama is a little like the Liberator Chronicles, and I still don't know how I feel about them.

I just wish there were not so many options, I know it is a good thing, but it costs so damn much.

In Memoriam: Bernard Horsfall
(20 November 1930 – 29 January 2013)

Bernard Horsfall died last week, and while he wasn't a recurring character on the BBC science fiction television series Doctor Who, he made several guest appearances.

Lemuel Gulliver in The Mind Robber (1968)
a Time Lord in The War Games (1969)
Taron in Planet of the Daleks (1973)
Chancellor Goth in The Deadly Assassin (1976)

images found at: Siskoid's Blog of Geekery (http://siskoid.blogspot.com/)

Always impressing with his presence. Great voice, great face, able to bring grace and intellect to his characters, while just as able to give them a strong physicality.
Bernard Horsfall (1930-2013) you will be missed.

The new BF series just sounds like a repackaged version of the CCs.

Yeah, I'll have to hear a bit more before I'm on board with this one. CC was the first series I listened to after starting my "from the very first episode" venture a couple of years ago (naturally, since I hadn't seen any of the later physicians). But not long ago I figured I could safely give some Numero Ocho audios a try.... and what a difference the cast makes. The quality of writing is about as uneven as the CCs, but given the relatively dry presentation style, that makes the short CC runtime a virtue. The idea of stretching that format out to ninety minutes or more kinda makes me shudder. Here's hoping I'm completely wrong.

They'll be NARRATING the parts of their Docs, not PLAYING their respective docs. (Remember BF have a very strict No Recasting policy - one confirmed by Mr B on a recent podcast)

As for 3rd; I thought BF had finally got Levine on board to do some CCs, or had I imagined that? And Katy M is still around to narrate some.

EDIT TO ADD - Hmm. Just re-read that and I apologise if that reply comes across as somewhat harsh. Certainly not intended!

That's what I'm sort of afraid of, and what I mean about appreciating the shorter CC stories. I rather struggled with "So Long, Big Mastadon" and "Jail in the Stars." And that's after getting through every missing episode. Or maybe it's because I got through every missing episode! :P

Another downside to them dropping the more traditional 'Short Trips' format, too, as anyone related to the series could have just read a normal story.

I like the idea of the "The UNIT Files" - more than the, IMHO, underwhelming C-Measures set.

I've been wracking my brains trying to think of any other contemporary that could do CC/TEAs for the 3rd but no-one springs to mind at all.

i glanced at the large conclusions twitter feed the other day after the 'no more CCs' announcement and they said
"Don't worry. We have ideas for the Third Doctor's era... we just haven't announced them yet."
..so that's good, it all remains to be seen/heard..
i guess we can add the charge of 'canceling good ideas' to that of 'overproducing with bad ideas' but there's precious little to complain about, nobody does what they do anything like as well, no doubt at least some content from the new ranges will be excellent.

Phew! Good news they've some plans for 3

I think we'll see the CC format continue via AudioGo, though. There's still a market for that 'short story reading' format, and the Destiny series 'primes' the regular AudioGo purchasers (who may not be BF purchasers) to the idea. Probably end up with the published by A-Go, with the production being part in-house and part BF.

Quick thought and question about the latest Destiny story.

The question bit is Spoiler'd as it contains ... spoilers!

Two gets a note from Eleven. Was there a 'cross-Doctor' bit like that in the first one? I can't remember.

And the thought; OK, based on this (and previous) I may have to start moving my position on Fraser 'taking over' the role of Two full time as this one is very much a Two story rather than Jamie and, by 'eck, he does pull it off well.

LOL Ian Levine is a petulant manchild. He's always screaming bloody murder about one thing or another, then playing the bullied victim when people don't want to interact with him. This serves him right. It's also ironic that a grown man who will insult and ridicule fan art of a Kroton for being the wrong shade of silver routinely puts out fan content that is mediocre at best. It warms my heart that he is probably stomping the ground right now, cursing to the heavens that his sooper secrit project has been released to the public. Levene has been living in Los Angeles since at least the early 90s, which I think is what made him unavailable. He's recently moved back to Britain. Incidentally, he's also insane. Not necessarily in the fun way - just insane.

---------- Post added at 03:54 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:32 AM ----------

I'll bet his cheeks are red as can be right now.

Say what you will about him, but at least he's trying to animate some of the classic episodes. Why Dan Hall refused the Shada animation I have no idea. The work done for Invasion and Reign of Terror was hardly top quality stuff, so if he only refused it to spite Levene (which is possible) than that is a pretty unfortunate way to treat the fans. I'll be looking forward to watching MTTU, and honestly despite all this uproar, I wouldn't be surprised if Levene and co. leaked this themselves to try and get fans to start to petition the team to go this route.

There was the radio dedication which was obviously from a future Doctor

Oh and btw, go on youtube now to see Ian Levine's animated Mission To The Unknown. It's been leaked by someone called felinestealers, Levine isn't happy at all so expect it to be taken down soon.

Damn, missed it and it's been taken down now. Anybody manage to snag a copy of this before it was removed?

The work done for Invasion and Reign of Terror was hardly top quality stuff...

Do you mean the officially released animations? I don't mind the work done for Invasion, but was thoroughly disappointed with the recent RoT work.

But when it comes to the recons I'd rather they either went all-out with proper 3D CGI and try to make it as realistic as possible, OR just clean-up the audio along with decent telesnaps and pictures, a sort of Loose-Cannon turned up to 11. The RoT stuff felt half-hearted and barely worth the effort.

I've not heard of second empire. Do love a good webcomic though.
Is it worth trying then?

It's great, but I had the same problem as Nobber - it's just gone on for ages so I lost the thread at some point.

Whoops! Sorry not by me. I meant I had the post numbers written down but they aren't on my desktop anymore.

I watched the LS recons a while back and honestly if I wasn't also knitting a scarf I'd have never made it through. The black and white stories don't usually grab me in the first place. I would say any animation is better than none but I recently found out I prefer the audio for S*h*a*d*a over the flash version so maybe you're right.

I seriously can't stand Levine...met him once back in the late 80's and the fact that i was a newbie fan that was learning about the show --he reacted in way that was very elitist. I was all excited because i had just met Patrick and then Jon P within a week of each other and he scoffed at me saying he had met all 7 ..come back when i could match that.
The fact that he seems to think his excrement didn't stink was even worse. He was the worst "comic shop guy" type fanboy -- and despite his role in saving episodes...i laugh maniacally that someone leaked the animation.... his sausage fingers must be bloody from typing his outrage this week.

---------- Post added at 04:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:31 PM ----------

i could care less if Levine had anything to do with the show ever again..... i hope he is fuming.

---------- Post added at 04:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:36 PM ----------

one a different note...i just realized that after the run of 8 and the anniversary special and likely Christmas special --medic 11 will almost have as much screen time as the 10th medic-- i know people are saying 11 will turn into 12 this year but i think it is amazing he has been on this long... i doesn't feel like it

I regard to the U.N.I.T. files... i think this could be the place where they can continue "Tales From The Vault" Yastes,Benton and Jo...perhaps e throw in Corporal Bell. ;).

Been mulling the recons animation issue and had a thought ...

Were I "The Man In Charge" I'd do a Competition.

You only have to look on Youtube to see how many talented animators there are out there, so you set up a competition to animate scenes and the winner gets to have their scene in a proper release. The Beeb could supply the models, pre-rigged for the major 3D software packages or flat 2D images, certain 'sets' etc, then put them out with rules on what you can and can't alter, what format the results should be in etc etc and give 'the hive mind' about a year. Get the results in and I bet you'ld get a good 90% of the work done for 'free'. All the runners up can be on the release, too, and all the other entries kept on the BBC site.

Ian's animated version of Mission to the Unknown is great - it feels very much like a 60s piece (and feels much more suited to the story than the recent Reign of Terror animation).

Its a great shame that his completed with animation Shada couldn't feature on the DVD.

(All IMHO of course)

R of terror comes out on Tuesday here in Canada -- is it that bad?

Well, I'm still going to get it...

My mini-review of RoT ...

IMHO the animation is ... terrible! For all the fuss made over it and the time they've taken I honestly don't think it's moved much beyond what we had for Real Time, Shada and Shalka. Some bits sort of gave me a bit of 'motion sickness' as there's overly-flowing-rack-focus and odd panning shots that just wouldn't have been done on TV at that time. It also can't make up it's mind if it's full 3D or flat-2D.

Strangely, some bits are very detailed and yet our 'Lead Actors' are oddly plain with only broad-brush caricatures with awful lip-sync.

The audio quality could have done with another pass or two, too.

They've had to extend the credits on some to cover the animators, etc, but they've really cludged the theme music to fit the extra time. The 'dum-de-de-dum' bass bit is looped at just the wrong beat and it jars terribly.

Episode 6 - These are all meant to be cleaned-up and restored, right? So why is there a damn 'hair-in-the-gate' mark from the telecine conversion process?

And to top it all? It's an incredibly dull story that could have done without two episodes!

From the bits I've seen, it reminded me of the awkward character movements of that DW Anime that's been on YouTube for years. Some subtler shading would have helped, too. Everyone looks like they need their face powdered.

Why should a fan film be accepted though just because the person who organised demands it happen? It was never commissioned or anything like that so Dan Hall didn't "refuse" it any more that he refuses other amateur fan films that have been made without any of the legal clearances being done. It's not like they could just release it without extensive work both on the project and on the legal side of things. People need to stop falling for the hype and internet tantrums.

I'd say that for the genre it was aiming for, the Anime version is actually SUPERIOR to what's been done for RoT.
