I just want to thank everyone who posts here. Great job!! I managed to get all the audios current to about this time last year at bolt.org and then they got slapped with a DMCA and everything got yanked. It's such a relief to have a new source. Especially the last four EDAs. I didn't care for the television movie but the Eighth Doctor is my favorite on the audios.

I also found the the Bernice Summerfield NA novels here. I've barely started on reading the books but it's always nice to have more. And there are so many.

Should be good.

My two worries are that they'll give Tom too much room to 'mess about' and it'll not sound like it fits the era, and Richardson and Briggs well get so sycophantic and swoony over him he'll tell them to go away and stop acting like an over-clingy boyfriend.

Bo I do like the way that the BBC ones have grown since Hornet's Nest. I'm never a great fan of the Semi-Narrated Drama, so think it's great the way they've slowly shed the narration aspect and moved to a purely drama piece. Almost, you know, almost as if they were easing Tom into the idea of doing pure audio stuff. :)

I laughed when I read this - sounds like a viable scenario as it'd be easy to get overwhelmed by Tom's massive charisma. But whatever happens, I'm really looking forward to these releases... it'll just be great to hear new 4th Doc stories closer to the style of the TV stories. And as the TV stories veered all over the shop after Hinchliffe and Holmes left, I think there's plenty of scope for it all still to feel 'right'.

(I do enjoy the Paul Magrs-scripted ones too, even if they did start off a bit 'parallel dimension'. They were like something out of an alternate universe's TV Comic.)

And a thumbs up and big appreciation to Burnie for his continued awesomeness!

I have exactly the same concerns! I'm not impressed with the BBC Tom Baker audio's, at all - they've let him believe that he doesn't have to act to play The Doctor, he just has to be himself!

The Doctor doesn't really have much of a character. The 4th Doctor was Tom Baker. Many people (including Tom himself) would say that Tom Baker wasn't acting when he originally played the part. So by suggesting he shouldn't play the part as himself today is a bit like suggesting a completely different actor could do the job just as well...

I think Baker's big I-can-do-it-all-alone ego is why it took so long to sign on with BF. Even during the TV days he wanted to get more screen time by eliminating the companions. I'm also sure Briggs and Bowerman took into consideration Baker's rambling self-produced videos and tapes before agreeing to do the current productions.

Richardson, I think you mean, rather than Bowerman. (Who I wish would stick to acting. Her direction of the CCs is awful. Rarely any life in them.) There's something I find utterly creepy about Richardson. Nothing I can really put my finger on, mind you, just a 'skin crawl' thing.

And don't get me started on Briggs. Great writer, but an ego that demands too much attention.

And ... Relax!!

:)

The trouble with Tom Baker playing the Doctor as himself is that he (Baker) has mellowed over the years. He's lost the arrogance and anger and this is reflected in his voice. So unless Tom 'acts' the part with the added arrogance his Doctor is going to be different. So I expect his portrayal to be similar to the BBC audios but being full blown big finish audio plays hopefully it won't be too much of a problem.

True, it's a difficult thing to pin down. But Tom on the new BBC audios sounds and acts nothing like the character we ever really saw on TV, but it doesn't matter as they're not set within an established period with an established TV companion. They're still The 4th Doctor, but one we never saw. (Personally I have him down as an older 4th Doctor that never needed to regenerate after Logopolis.)

But if he plays him like that with Leela in stories set during the Hinchcliffe era (and I believe there's one that runs directly after Talons?) it's just not going to feel right. Still, I reckon BF will manage to pull it off OK. Fingers crossed!

That's exactly what I meant about them sounding 'parallel dimension'. Paul Magrs is known for his very whimsical take on Doctor Who, whether for audio or novels. I suppose you have to develop a taste for his writing - some of his stuff is brilliant, some a little, uh, perhaps, self-indulgent. I imagine BBC/AudioGO thought that Magrs would be a good match for Baker because it's just so looney-tune.

But would Tom behave the same when surrounded by a full cast? Specifically, Louise Jameson...? I'm getting more and more curious to hear these now. Anticipation!

Hornet's Nest, Demon Quest and Serpent's Crest appear to be 1 style of Baker's 4th Doctor, but we will have to wait and see what Big Finish does in it 4th Doctor Audios, due to be released in 2012, to be able to compare both - for those who have seen 'Who on Earth is Tom Baker' [also by Reeltime Pictures], will appreciate that Tom Baker is somewhat left of centre in his delivery and belief in how the part should be played.....

DrakeRavensmith

Burneggroll: Thanks for posting those audios! They filled a nice gap for me.

I hate to continue to be a bother but it looks like Big Finish released Short Trips vol 4 last month so if anyone happens to have it...

As far as the Baker audios go, they've been on my wish list since I first heard of them. I had no idea that he was essentially companionless. I plan on giving them a run through as soon as I finish the last couple of EDAs. Seems a bit odd to go in that direction. After having listened to 52 some odd Big Finish productions, I'm confident that they'll come out in the correct style or feel or what have you. They seem to do a good job of capturing each Doctors quirks. Even the difference between the Seventh Doctors first season where he's mixing idioms and the later chessmaster persona. The Sixth Doctor does seem to get the silly stories. Ish... for instance. It's a shame that Baker didn't agree to do the audios before Elisabeth Sladen died. She was my second favorite companion and not having her in the audios is tragic.

It's, sort of, worse than that. BF had lined up Lis, and cleared it all with Cardiff to use the character, and Tom was due to do four (I think) with her.

Yeah, when Lis died Baker mentioned that he had just agreed the previous week to do some audios with her. When Baker originally declined to do the audios, I believe he said it was because he didn't find the scripts too captivating. You have to wonder why in the last ten years he didn't sit down and go: 'Well these things must be pretty good. Look how many they've put out. Fans must be bankrupting themselves trying to keep up!' I realize that Baker is not in any way obligated to do these things but he knows full well how beloved his character continues to be. When you think about it, it's not that many stories per doctor per year. A few hours at a time and you're done. Hardly seems like an inconvenience. I guess I'm just mad at him because he doesn't have a better explanation for holding off so long. Since he did, may he live to be a hundred.

A special advance preview screening of MGM's Logan's Run was held on May 7th, 1976 in San Diego. Fay Popejoy took along a cassette tape recorder into the theater and recorded all the audio track of this preview screening. Shortly thereafter the studio hacked a ton of stuff out of the movie to make it shorter, and gain the film a PG rating. The cut footage no longer exists (it vanished mysteriously along with the preview print).

The fan-recorded audio from the original preview was posted online in 2002.

Dunno about Blackout but the few BBV Audios I've listened to are stand alone as they legally could not be connected to Doctor Who- hence the stories were The Professor & Ace (NOT 7th Doctor) - (Ace was used with permission of the creators) - no other titles or names connected to Dr Who were used in the productions as far as I'm aware- but I've only listed to 4 or 5 of them.

Hear, Hear!

REALLY don't like the new theme for the 8th Doctor. It's like Briggs (I guess) has thrown every virtual instrument in GarageBand at the Debney version and twiddled the tempo until it's just at the 'slightly too fast' mark. It's far too 'busy' and the short, end of part, version seems to fight against the tone of the play itself; that being that the play has a fairly steady pace and then the music kicks in at a run.

Ages ago I saw some torrents of the early stuff BF did that someone had re-edited to add the correct themes when BF didn't have them ... I'm sorely tempted to that with these to put the Arnold version back in.

Brilliant story, though, and Shelley seems like she's going to workout OK.

I'm glad that you liked Doctor Stew. It's a shame Fox is being a pain in their butt.

I was importing the BBV audios into itunes and discovered that number six Guests for the Night was a bad file. Incorrect file extension. Also, number 23 Infidel's Comet was missing and the rapidshare link no longer works. I'm in no hurry to listen to them but if you could re-post them I would appreciate it.

Thanks for posting the Silver Turk. I do love the 8th Doctor audios!

It's an interesting little curio that was created to advertise the Tyne and Weir Development Corporation's work in the area (regeneration, a gag not lost on the script writers). There's a couple of jaunts around the area's history before the plot fizzles without a real conclusion, and then settles down to the inevitable montage of pics of the current (sic) and intended project-works over music and reassuring words like 'more jobs'. Still, it was nice to see McCoy in costume in the part again after the show had been cancelled.

The presentation itself took place over multiple screens, and had a few filmed inserts of McCoy against a black backdrop and, although possibly heard, there was no TARDIS set. The rest of the show consisted of slowly animated colour line drawings, much like early Flash. When you hear the words 'regeneration - a really important word for a Timelord', the screens showed inverted line drawings of all the Doctors up to that point half-inched from one of the Haining books.

I did offer the recording to Stu Palmer (of the wonderful Altered Vistas animations) hoping that an animation might be attempted, but he told me he couldn't find a use for it on a release.

I think I've found it now, so a PM will be forthcoming shortly!

I wouldn't beat yourself up about it, there was a certain innevitability about proceedings.

I personally felt greatly for the moderators - they were put in an impossible position - but I did feel they could have handled in a way that didn't alienate so many responsible users. The silliest thing in the whole saga was the inability to commerically buy DWM archives on DVD. I suppose the lesson for this wonderful forum - another large thanks to burneggroll in particular - is to hide every link in spoiler code (what button in the menu is it?). You would be surprised just how often this forum pops up on google nowadays when I'm looking for something Doctor Who related, likely the source of purge of burneggroll files a while back, I'd imagine. What happened at Bolt?, people joined from Rapidshare links to 'Bolt' at the name change, the original Dr Who group locked the door to new members, a new group was formed. As a social group and attempted to fileshare outside of the forums.
First the audios threads were shut down by Bolt, then the videos, then lastly, the magazines, all discussions as to why, were replied with: it's DCMA, not us - arguing with this got you banned, posting links, got you banned.....Hopefully the 50 members from my group will come here, and spread the word to the others who were interested in continuing in their collections and keeping the old/obscure/fan productions going

When I joined Bolt I felt really pleased but soon as a Who fan became isolated, but for Hew1tt's kind invitation to join his group there wouldn't be and indeed isn't much to keep me at Bolt.

I still visit bolt.org because they have a nice collection of ebooks but I find their policies confusing. Several members began posting retail quality ebooks from a certain popular sci fi series and then one of the members removed his links and exclusively posted them in the protected forum. I don't post much and most of what I had posted was deleted with the DW threads so I didn't qualify as a trusted member to gain access to the protected forum when I asked. Days later, I did receive an email saying that I was trusted enough to be given their paypal data so I could send them money to keep the site running. Apparently they don't give that address to everyone because someone could report it and it could be shut down forcing them to open a new account. Nice to know that a user who visits the board sporadically enough can get hit up for money but be locked out of certain sections. Luckily a different user uploaded different versions of the same files so I didn't have to give in. Don't get me wrong, I have contributed to various forums before but this sounded too much like extortion for my tastes.

Vern,

The "Insider" is a US based version of Doctor Who Monthly, but written for an American audience with US conventions as opposed to the UK listings, it also doesn't have the 'UK actors obituaries or 'seen in lately' sections, issue 1 went on sale during the first half of series 6. It's also produced by Marvel Comics so there may be some pdf links floating around......

Doctor Who Adventures is a children's magazine that features original comics (for example, the ones with Jamie's descendant, Heather McCrimmon, as a companion). I have found a few of them, but not many (note: I have no idea who scanned these).

10th Doctor - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EUJKY6GF
11th Doctor - http://www.4shared.com/file/P3BZ4RxW/11th_Doctor.html

Battles in Time is another children's magazine with comics. Those comics are a bit more well-represented on the Web, but there are still some missing.

Never heard of the Pisces ones before now. One obvious connection is that Fairs and Lock were involved in the early days of BF. I believe Fairs has returned as writer/director a few times in recent years, whilst Lock was off playing Zen in the B7Media Blakes 7.

Will be interesting to hear the 'original version' as I quite enjoyed the BBV take later on.

Hey, burneggroll. Just wondering, but are you gonna be providing the new Big Finish stuff for this month? I heard it's already out, so I checked my usual torrent site and couldn't find it anywhere. If you could share 'em, I'd be supremely grateful. Thanks!

---------- Post added at 11:25 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:23 AM ----------

Pisces was intended to be a 12-part audio series, released on cassette from 1990 onwards, but unfortunately only six episodes were recorded and only 5 released. In 2001, a plan was hatched to re-issue and continue the series on CD. Unfortunately, the only thing that happened was some cover art designs and a misspelled website; piisces - audio drama (http://www.piisces.com/)

Thanks for these. Something to listen to over the weekend if the latest BFs don't appear before.

All of the titles in post #643 (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f92/doctor-who-audio-drama-thread-85235/22.html#post1840206) have been released. What I don't have (yet) are public copies. Still wanting a sharable copy of Companion Chronicles Special, too.

I'm subscribed to the thread already. I'm just bookmarking it as a precautionary measure. I understand that you're waiting on the public copy, as well as the CC. Thanks for the head's up. I'm mostly just waiting for "The Witch from the Well", so it's no big deal. :)

Thanks to everyone who has posted here. I love these audiobooks, they make the commute to work so much more enjoyable and it has to be said that some of these stories leave the old tv show standing still (never thought I'd say that when I first heard about the DW audio stuff). Just try and buy the odd one or two from BF so that they keep making them if you download - it's only fair given the enjoyment that they give us

I sure am, and the only one I care to get is "The Witch from the Well". I'm not too keen on getting the Lost Stories and Companion Chronicles for the time being. Luckily, I've been catching up on the range of "The New Eighth Doctor Adventures" for the time being.

The most disturbing thing is that the site that carried "The Silver Turk" has removed it. Of course thebox stopped carrying them a few months back. I'm wondering if whoever uploaded that one is waiting for "Army of Death" to release the this one. The CC is a 1st Dr. and there's Hexagora from the missing episodes, so something should be forthcoming...

*headdesk* Buy it if you're that precious about it. This recording's oooooonly 128kbps too, you know. Personally, 500x500px cover art is plennnnty HQ for me, but hey, I'm cheap.

DrakeRavensmith
11-16-2011, 08:11 AM
I never understand the fuss with the kbps. A long time ago I did some testing and concluded that I can't hear the difference between audiobooks encoded at 56kbps and anything above that. Therefore, for space reasons and convenience sake, I always join the files into one big mp3 and use itunes to change it to 64kbps. The 154 something audios that make up the monthly releases only take up a little over 8 gigs on my hard drive.

Nobber
11-16-2011, 11:49 AM
It's really down to a combination of the listener, the gear they're using to play, the speakers/headphones and where they're listening.

Out'n'about with my iPod and cheap JVC in-ear 'phones I'd struggle to tell the difference between a 128 and 256 - partly due to never having it so loud that I drown out traffic noise; getting run over isn't worth it!

Back inside on my either my Hi-Fi or iMac speakers, though, I do tend to notice that the sound has less 'body' at 128, less in the bass register. Not really so much that it destroys the experience, but some effects/music tend to loose their 'sparkle'

With purely spoken-word stuff a little tweaking of the EQ can brighten things up for lower bit-rate recordings (as you say, 64kbps can be fine for these) but for ones with music/sfx I feel there's always something missing when you get down that low.

Used to know a chap that forked out over 3k on Bose gear, massive speakers about two-foot high and a foot-deep.

Impressive gear, but wasted in a 12ftx12ft room where he could barely turn it up beyond 2 (let's say about 10% output) without it being overwhelming in a room that size. Bass end still bouncing around whilst the treble caught up. Sounded awful!

You are welcome. Where are you getting these from that include the cover art? You'll notice there have been a few request for back covers. Do you have any back issue art to share?

I have found some hi quality cover art that I found on a few torrent sites, as well as the occasional Google Image search. I'd be more than willing to share a folder of all the covers I have, from the main range to the subscriber-only bonus tales, and even the stories that came with Doctor Who Magazine. But uploading to file sharing sites was never my strong suit. If I could get some pointers, I'll try to see what I can do to contribute. Not all the covers are hi quality, but I'm happy with what I've got for now. :)

Thing the second - Megaupload seems to be convinced I'm making too many requests, but the IP address it gives isn't mine. (This is whilst trying to D/L the HHGTTG Live recording ... one I've never heard of! So looking forward to that.)

I do like the GA's - but there's no denying that they're just too damn long.

(And ... relax ...)

However ... there are times when I'd agree that they could be a bit more careful on the voice casting. Barnaby Edwards normally gets it spot on with obviously different voices, where-as Bowerman tends to use the same sounding ones.

And for those that haven't heard it - I definitely recommend "The Adventures of Luther Arkwright" - Another one it's a shame BF didn't do any more of.

So after Burnie's recent update of 8th and 9th stories, I make it we're still on the lookout for

Companion Chronicles 6.05 - The First Wave
Lost Stories 3.2 - Hexagoria

Doctor Who - 48 - Borrowed Time (Read by Meera Syal)

Thanks so much for this one, Burneggroll. What a treat this will be to listen to. It's really great to see autobiographies posted. There are quite a few autobiographies been released but for some reason they don't seem very popular.
Anyone got Nicholas Courtney's or Mary Tamm's? I recon they would be fun.

If Colin Baker's tweets are to believed, then he's currently working on his.

Can't wait to hear his take on the debacle of the departure of his TV incarnation and his 'renewal' and, arguably, his raised popularity in the role via Big Finish.

Thanks to everyone for all the fantastic links in this thread, it really is appreciated.

I’m trying to complete my Doctor Who Magazine collection and I’m wondering why all the links I locate only seem to go up to about issue 255. Is anybody aware of any links for issue no’s 255 through to the more recent issues?

Many thanks….

Yeah, I get what you mean. I found George Carlin's "sorta-biography" Last Words in audio form one time on this one torrent site. As a big Carlin fan, I quickly lapped it up. It was really informative to listen to, as well as retained the usual Carlin wit he had til the day he died. The only creepy thing about it was they got George's brother Patrick to narrate the book, and it's really uncanny how similar they sound to one another. :)

It's quite odd, even disconcerting at times, listening to Matthew Waterhouse read his as it's in the third-person.

* Another Doctor Who movie rumour:
Harry Potter director David Yates plans to reboot the franchise in a feature film. The BBC clarified it won't be released for several years because there is no script, no cast, no production team at this point.

Please, for the love the cheese-maker, never let this happen.

Ever.

Thanks Burnie for the new NSA stuff. And thanks for the YouTube links to the Myth Makers vids, I've searched up and the web for some of those, and it never occurred to me to look up the old 'Tube.

I highly recommend Blue Box Boy, one of the most unintentionally funny things I've ever come across. Waterhouse acknowledges that back in the day he wasn't the brightest lad, the intended implication that he has learned from bitter experience. Unfortunately, his pretensions to current-day thespian, intellectual pursuits are undermined by the same basic limitations. :D

FYI For those looking for DWM there are a couple of demonoid torrents with most of the back issues up until about six months ago.

Cheers
Matt

Looks ok in FF & IE. Which browser are you using?

Firefox 7.0.1 on OSX 10.6.8 - Looks to be post 732 where it screws up for me, with 733 onwards being 'embedded' with-in that post.

EDIT TO ADD - Just check on Safari and had the same problem. And noticed something else; isn't the 'spoiler' tag almost meant to hide links from the unregistered? (Or something like that? Either way, I thought you could only see links if you were logged in?)

AND ANOTHER EDIT - A-ha! It's the links that are 'CODE' tagged that are legible prior to registration.

I don't see it. Split the post for easier proofreading... I don't have a Mac in the shop right now. I'm assuming Macos has issues with a Table within a Table. Which means there are posts in the Dark Shadows audio drama thread (Thread 92421) you have troubles with?

No problems with the Dark Shadows thread, and it's only been the the last two posts I've flagged as being 'odd' in this thread.

A quick look at the Page Source and I *think* the issue could be in post 732 where you open a table after 'steam punk' and you've not closed the '/tbody' tag properly.

Also, for those who are in the US/Canada and STILL think the offer is expensive, we actually pay LESS for download-only stuff. Rather than paying 55 GBP (which is currently around $85), we're actually charged $55, or around 35 GBP. Personally, I've already pre-ordered the new Benny boxsets as well as all the 4th Doctor releases. (and I'll probably go for Iris and the specials as well.)
