London Excel - tickets go live on Monday 8th July.

Planning to go on 23rd November and see Tom.

Doctor Who 50th Celebration (http://celebration.doctorwho.tv/)

I'm so devastated - had been planning for the last couple of years to be in London then - I knew they'd be doing something like this. Unfortunately, events in the last few months have well & truly scuppered those plans, and my heart is broken hearing about this...

*Sigh.* Oh, well - maybe for the 60th?? :(

I used to go to all sorts of conventions (DW, comics, general sci-fi etc.) and the British ones (even the really big ones) NEVER charged for photos, autographs etc. This is an unwelcome trend that's come over from the US. If anyone goes to this thing at ExCel, please don't buy into this 'extras' business.

Some guests get a good deal, and some guests get a bad deal.

Sometimes they need that money to eat, because what they're really in this for is the semifree world travel, because if you're only offered the air tickets over to country X, and the liberal use of the couch belonging to bloke running the convention but jack shit else, the d-listers take what they can get and figure out a good place to stand on the roadside holding a cardboard sign saying "Will act for food" after they touch down.

If the money goes straight to the actor/celebrity, that's fine.

I'd rather pay the whore than the pimp.

You know what would have explained everything that happened to Julie Shumway in Under the Dome?

If her husband had been Gordon Shumway.

I seriously need to see a fan edit where they superimpose images of Gordon over everywhere where they got "just some guy" playing her unfortunate husband.

Little late to this conversation, but I've had a bit of a weird weekend! Worrking too bloody hard as usual for too little financial rmuneration again...

Anyway, this guy has a great site with a suggested running order that makes a lot of sense:

Space: 1999 - Episodes of the first series (http://www.eyespider.freeserve.co.uk/space/one/index.php)

Main:
Space: 1999 - a personal view by Andrew Kearley (http://www.eyespider.freeserve.co.uk/space/content.html)

1999 is great, especially the first season, which is very moody, philosophical and atmospheric. They were really trying to do something different and I think it's underappreciated. The second season is almost an entirely different show - or a show reimagined to be something else entirely, which deforms it. In a way, it has its own pleasures (i.e. yes, Maya), but even now, I wish they'd continued in the vein of the first season and just shored up the aspects that were seen to be lacking - a little humour never goes amiss. But they ended up going so far in a different direction it lost almost any credibility it had. And you had to read the whole show as a kind of fable, or even parable - even as a kid, I knew some of the science was ludicrous - which didn't stop my enjoyment of it one bit. It's immense in scope and ambition and really reaches for a deeper sensibility, a lot of which was down to Johnny Byrne (he who wrote Keeper of Traken amongst others for our beloved medic) and Chris Penfold, excellent writers with poetic sensibilities, both. Both were largely absent from season 2, natch.

I got a link to the site PMed to me a short while back, but I appreciate your involvement in the discussion.

A great stunt in it too at the beginning with the android (though it's not as good as the one in Terror of the Autons, when the Auton policeman gets knocked down a hill by a car and gets back up - now that was a great stunt!). I do have a soft spot for Android Invasion though, despite its plot-holes.

Apparently in that scene you are talking about the actor placing the copper got hit for real

from sticky wedia "The dramatic scene at the start of Episode Three, where an Auton is hit with a car and tumbles off a cliff, was quite real. Dinny Powell was driving the vehicle in place of actor Richard Franklin, and stuntman Terry Walsh, as the Auton, fell further down the slope than intended, being injured in the mishap. 3 sets of twins.....Bamebra and Morgan la Fae......

I'm gonna in the zero room for a while

(yes I'll clean up)

I agree about Android Inv.
cracking little story when viewed in isolation, but sandwiched between Pyramids and Morbius it does suffer by comparison.

I don't want to start a "Who hierarchy" as such things are complete codswallop, so if this offends then tell me to go shove it
but i find such things interesting so I'll ask anyway

How much of the medic have you guys seen/heard/read?
my tally is TV: all the stories that still exist (recent rumours and the Gal 4 ep excepted [so happy to have seen the leaked "submarine danger" ep, PT in that hat!!!])
Audio: catching up! upto about september 2011 releases
Books and comics: almost none. (must find the time!!)
Any recommendations of what I'm missing out on/ should avoid for a while?

TV: little to none of 1,2,3,4,5 (catching up); all of the rest.
Audio: working on it. Still a couple of hundred to go.
Books and comics: pretty much all up to excluding 10.

I prefer to watch a series in its entirety rather than piecemeal. As this wasn't possible with DW, I decided to read the series in its entirety, then watch the episodes that there were. Of course, this went out of the window when I started reading 6. I just had to see this guy! And I found out that the descriptions of his manner were not at all made up: in fact, they were toned down XD <3
So I read and watched Sixie. Then when I got to 7, I found that some of the literature depended on the back story of the audios... so I ventured into the third dimension. And now that I've met (four of) them in the flesh, the fourth dimension, my life is complete :D

Seen all TV as broadcast since 1973 and everything released on video, DVD, etc. plus the reconstructions.
Read all target novels, all Virgin and BBC novels, and the Telos novellas.
Listened to all the BBV and BF audios.
Never been a real fan of DW in comics although I did collect TV Comic and TV Action as a kid and then DW Weekly & Monthly for a bit.
Also read untold numbers of fanzines back in the 80s and most of the non-fiction DW books published up to the cancellation in the late 80s.
Can't seem to get into the new series novels for some reason. The ones I have read (the first 6 published) seemed to be aimed at a much younger audience than the BBC 8th Doctor novels. However I am really loving the special novels (Dark Horizons etc.)

I've seen every existing episode of the show, plus a few recons.
I've read a few of the comics, but can't really get into them, which is funny since I was a comics fan until a few years back.
I've heard almost all of the audios by our favorite company, most of the original ones from that government-owned company, and a few others.
I own almost every original Doctor Who novel, but only started reading them a few years back. I've read about 1/3 of the Virgin and B/B/C line, and most of the new series ones. (By the way, they get considerably more complex and adult as the series goes on, Ch0ronzon.) But I have gotten sidetracked reading the Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) series.

Audio - LC and 9, 10, 11 medic stuff, although with the audio stories i am working through medics 1 to 11 in story order, so for example my ipod has 11 audio books at any one time each from a different medic, once i have heard a story from medic 1 i then listen to one from medic 2 until i hit 11 and then go around again listening to the next medic 1 story in chronological order... I've been going in order through the LCs excluding CCs(but including the American and the Fishman Fallacy), the Webcasts, and the TV series(in audio form, though most of it not edited together yet ;) ), and I've just finished listening to Recollection of the Pepperpots. I've also Listened to The Doomsday Gadget(with 7) and the Greek Singers of Chronology, seen the TV movie, heard all of the 8th medic adventures(excluding the CC where he's been turned into a doll), and seen all of the new series. As for books, I've tried my hand at them, read a 9 book, and several 8 books and listened to some of the Quick Hops and comics, but I prefer being able to hear the actor, so I couldn't keep myself focused. The order I listen to is in my sig, though it's a bit personalized what with the names, so the link from post above this(assuming nobody's beatin me to posting!), as well as the whoguide are better to look at, as they've helped the ordering process immensely.

For my part, I've seen all the tv stories, in which I include SJA which some may think is Medic-lite BUT taking into account all the crossovers, it can't be anything but canon. Besides I thought that some episodes were absolutely brilliant, ie. Death of the Medic which had the first meeting of the reporter and the ditzy blonde. wonderful moments!

listened to all of LC, including (sometimes with shame and severe pain) CC, Gallifrey, excelsis, pepperpot kingdoms...

the books I read some but found it sometimes hard to fit into my own little canon so I don't really credit them for much although I didn't read it all. AFA comics, nothing really except these anniversary special ones which are somewhat entertaining but I'll have to see how it works out in the end before I make a decision about it...

Oh and about the And Inv, it was a nice story! but one of my best from that period is the zygon story... can't wait to see them in the nu-who :)

I want to see what those Zygon suckers are really for.

Either they can run towards a sheer building face and roll up the right angled wall of glass and steel like Sonic the parkour prodigy hedgehog, or the Lochness monster has thousands and thousands of corresponding nipples which dock with most of those sucklers during feeding time.

As for that teaser, forgive the quality in some parts, I tried isolating the dialogue from the background music, but it didn't turn out too well, so I tried just rearranging the dialogue, music intact. It's my own rearrangement of the prequel to the Medic's Alethonym. RWQ

Now, I've noticed that some dislike the CC's, and I don't get why. True they can be of variable quality, some good, some not so good, but that's true of every format!

I'm actually doing much the same, following the list linked and going through story-by-story. Currently on "The Dominators" of Troughton but if something newly released set before a story I've already heard, I just listen to that immediately without having to wait to get around to it. For the most part, it hasn't been an issue yet but I can imagine it might get a bit overwhelming when on the 6th or so.

How much of the medic have you guys seen/heard/read?

Pretty much all of it (including spin-offs - but I DO NOT include that horrible so-called "K-9" thing...)! All TV eps surviving, soundtracks, & recons (I'm planning to my big 'in order' rewatch starting some time next year...), All LC & BBC Who related audios up to this month, all Target books & audio versions, All Virgin & BBC books, Telos novellas, all original audios, all the comics, DWMs, and most of the more notable non-fiction books. (I used to have a LOT of spare time back in my unemployed days!) And yes, I do read/listen to/watch other things besides DW, quite a lot!!

I'm less up on fan-made stuff, but I don't really count that (although I have heard all of BBV's stuff with the proper monsters, Sylv & Soph, Lalla & K9, etc), but if a proper TV-medic personage is involved, I'll probably give it a go.

I'm going to start trying to find time to re-listen to a lot of LC stuff soon, coz a lot of them seem to be a bit of a blur, and some I don't remember a damn thing about! Others I just want to hear again (eg: Pare Sparts, all of Shearman's stuff). Think I might try the Forge sequence again to start, including the novel (if it ever arrives...).

As to what to miss/not miss: be VERY selective with the novels, do a bit of research - there's some blinders in there, but a lot of crap, too. Maybe find some synopses and try the ones that sound good to you? And most of the comics besides 70s-80s DWM ones aren't really much cop (although it was truly lovely to see John Ridgeway drawing Colin & Frobisher again in this months P.O.T. Sixie issue).

Basically, it's a big ocean, just dive in - and if you don't like what you catch, you can always throw it back and go fishing again... :)

Now, I've noticed that some dislike the CC's, and I don't get why. ...

For me they're generally the ones I'll listen to last each month. I like the format, but they did go through a bit of a slump for a long while (most of S4,5 and 6) where it felt the life had gone out of most of them. The connecting factor was the director (who plays a lead role as an archaeologist) who just seemed to go through a bit of "by the numbers" phase.

The trilogy with 1, Stephen and Oliver failed for me as 'the twist' / 'shock' about ....

Oliver being gay in a time when being gay was a crime

was so obvious as a) it was telegraphed and b) the actor is ...

... as camp as a row of tents in real life

And as the two main lead characters didn't care about it it was hard to really extract any drama or emotion from the reveal. That particular storyline felt dropped in to make a point that really didn't need making.

I know this sounds terrible (perhaps?) but it would have made for better drama if Stephen had had issues with it. At least it would have made for a story, rather than just being shoehorned in. If you're going to make an Issue about something, at least have one main character have Issues with The Issue. I hope that makes sense!

Same here. The closest they've come so far (even though I didn't like it that much as a story) was Armygeddyon Storm. I really want them to find a decent Orac, though. Locke does Zen very well, but his Orac never sounds right.

Well Stephen is from the 23rd century, it's possible that Earthinglings could all become oppressive prudes again? I think the funny thing is that a girl like Katrina from Ancient Troy would be as fine with Homosexuality as Stephen... Although if by the 41st century things had cycled round and earthgove saw fit to legislate sexuality again, that Sara Kingdom would be just the sort of person to round up and lead the homosexuals off to the labour camps.

Sara's home era is about a hundred years before the Doctor liberated the Ood, which sounds about like when the Ood first started offering themselves up as servants to humanity.

How many Ood did Sara own?

If the Dalek Master Plan had worked out, what were they going to do with the Ood?

Yeah, that's sort of what I mean. A better dramatic reveal could have been Stephen's attitude and how it changes his view of Oliver for a while. At least there would have been a story there rather than a fairly obvious trope being played out.

TV: Every classic episode (including recons) in the first fifteen seasons, two serials in to the sixteenth. In the new series, the first two and a half seasons.
Audio: I've been following the chronology of these, too, though I haven't been a completist. Still, that means I've mostly heard CCs. I've been dipping into some 8th Medic stories, though, after determining that I wouldn't be introducing too much continuity confusion.
Books and comics: None. Though I've looked over the 'TARDIS Eruditorium' books, which seem like they might be worthwhile (when talking about the times and context of the show, rather than applying lit-crit nonsense to it).

Agree with the consensus on Robot Incursion, too. A very solid serial, and one of the reasons it's been so tough to keep going after the 'golden age' ended. After a dozen seasons of slow but steady improvement, I feel like I'm already seeing the show's decline. (Though I don't doubt there are some high points yet to come.)

Might also be a good time to mention once again how much I appreciate the attitude of so many of the thread's participants. I'm not terribly knowledgeable, not up to date on the current show, haven't heard a ton of audios and haven't read any print material. Yet it's pretty much unheard of for people to be anything but friendly and helpful when I've posted questions, comments, criticisms, etc. Vive la thread!

Thank you for your time, and will be back when life is less crazy.....

Look forward to seeing you again 'round these parts. Best of luck with all that 'responsibility' stuff.

You're aware that rapidgator makes you wait three hours inbetween each free download?

I managed to get them quickly with rapid8, the premium link generator, but it would have been just as easy for you to upload all four links rarred together into a single file, so that some of us wouldn't have to spend 9 hours minimum waiting.

No offence intended.

The limitations of Rapid8 with rapidgator are as follows 75 megs. The limitations of Rapidgator with anyone who has a premium Rapidgator account is 15 gig. The 15 gig limit per day from rapidgator is then shared between everyone who uses Rapid8, so on a bad day the 15 gig is used up quickly. I assume that if you buy a Rapid8 premium account that they have several premium Rapidgator accounts and you don't have to worry about the 15 gig a day limit, and that rapid8 premium allows you to download file sizes larger than 75 megs.

If rapidgator or rapid8 never works for you ever, then maybe try installing a new browser. Different browsers have different strengths and weaknesses. If you have chrome, try firefox, but if you already have firefox, try chrome, and if you are still using Internet Explorer, slap yourself. There are lots of other more exotic choices out there too. You don't have to get rid of your old browser, but installing a second browser is a better idea than trying to upgrade your existing browser until you do something awful and then nothing works anywhere with anything.

Here is another premium link generator that works with rapidgator.

leechcrib.com - Rapidshare, Rapidgator, Uploaded, Netload, Extabit, Putlocker, Premium link generator (http://www.leechcrib.com/multi/index.php)

Which also has to suffer through 15 gig a day divided by the whole world.

Why do uploaders then use rapidgator if it's so shitty for free downloaders?

Rapidgator is one of the few file lockers that still pays uploaders real money when the public downloads their media, movies and other stuff. Between 1 dollar and 35 dollars per one thousand downloads depending on the size of the file and who is downloading the file. Rapidgator rewards their uploaders for attracting the public to buy, renew and use premium rapidgator accounts.

Hi guys, I have just purchased my ticket for the medic 50th at the excel on Friday in November, however there were no adult tickets left on their own for any other days and so I purchased a family ticket, under the impression that my good lady would like to go with me, apparently she doesn't.

The tickets have now gone through and I have 1 adult and 2 child tickets spare. Would anybody be interested in having these at cost price which is 26 each I haven't put any booking fee on. I have been sent the tickets via email and they come as 4 separate tickets which is handy, also I have checked on the website and tickets can be passed on or resold to friends.

An obvious concern of anybody reading this may be "what if this guy tries to resell these e-tickets several times over leaving me with a duff ticket on the day"
The solution to that would be to meet outside the excel on the day as they are all for the same time. Then once in we could do the money part
Anybody interested? The event kicks off at 09:30 on Friday 21st November.

A couple of my friends may be interested but they are not massive whovians like me, so this is why i'm checking for interest on here first

Jesus, there's always someone who isn't happy with the quality of the stuff they're getting for free!

The one and only reason I use rapidgator is that on my connection, in my part of the world, it has by far the fastest upload speed. I am not making any [bleep] money out of it.

Tell me where you want it uploaded and I'll do it when I get home from work

God, no, you're not - that would be BRILLIANT! More potential than Survivors, anyway (although i agree the original is pretty good, especially said episode, just can't see much potential as an audio series). Maybe not, but they're obviously selling enough to warrant more stories. It seems it doesn't matter what tat they turn out, fans will still pay good money for it.

I ordered the paperback ages ago from Amazon, but it still hasn't turned up. I've had one of those 'trying to source new stock' emails from them. You might be better off going to the publisher.

I could care less about Survivors as the original TV series was brilliant IMHO, but if Big Finish did to DOOMWATCH what they've announced for the Avengers, I'd place my order right now.

Don't forget that their owner has VERY deep pockets.

Really for him LC is a 'hobby'.

Many people spend stupid amounts of money (or time) (or even both) collecting DW related stuff purely based on the love of character and series. He just does it a different direction by enabling the creation of stuff he wants to hear.

(Yeah, I'm putting it in the OSTs thread too.)

I'd much rather Star Cops on BF than Survivors. The beauty of the original Survivors for me was entirely visual, seeing how people would have to act to survive in a barren apocalyptic world. To my mind, an audio drama would likely be focused on domestic soap opera-esque arguments, like some of the more boring 2nd season episodes. My favourite episodes of the series (e.g. "Mad Dog") had long stretches with no dialogue at all and would never work on audio.

If so ... I definitely recommend starting from the beginning for the 'Sparks Nevada', 'Tales of the United Solar System Alliance' and 'Cactoid Jim' ones; they're all in the same universe and the Sparks one has some long running stories/jokes.

Urgg. I just couldn't get on with Python due to the enforced 'tab' indent structuring.
Really? I've found that its just being tidy with the code, any subclause (like a 'if', 'while' or 'for') gets an indent.
I had tried learning java, but i found that so many of the courses and tutorials were constantly saying "you don't need to know what this code does right now, just copy it and it will work". never have I appreciated the frustration of a medic mate more, "i'll explain later" is damned annoying to hear!

I'm finding python much easier, and hopefully act as a grounding to move on to other langs.

Yep, Python is a great language for that very reason! I found that the structural constraints become second nature after a while and you end up using them with other languages out of habit. It makes your code so much easier to read when you (or someone else) needs to change it, possibly years later!

python seems a bit like VB in its use of newlines and indents rather than semicolons, parentheses, and curly brackets. takes up more vertical space but you don't have to worry about missing punctuation!

Can I request medics mates m*a*s*t*erbrain please xxxx

Goldie, please - no offence intended, but you've REALLY got to get out of the habit of requesting new stuff the moment it is released! We've got a small group of very dedicated individuals who get new stuff out to us consistently every month. You've got to give them a chance to download the audios and maybe - god forbid - have a listen to the stories themselves before going through the time-consuming task of uploading them. If a few days or a week goes by without anything appearing, then by all means, make a request. But to request something sometimes within minutes of it appearing on the LC or Hammer website just seems pretty pushy to me.

I'm sorry, I really don't mean to come off as rude - and I do know you've tried to give back when you can - but can we please give our regular "suppliers" a chance to catch their breaths when these stories get released? I'd like to make this request of everybody.

R

Yeah, I went through the publishers, the distributors are the same guys that handle the Hammah audios - propably more likely to get it, and a couple of bucks cheaper...

Doomwatch - oooh, yes! That's another one that'd be interesting to me. I'm still waiting for the surviving eps to get a DVD release...

Prey to the LESSER GODS that I don't find a Wombles In Space album!

Personally, I can never tell the difference between the Wombles and the Bay City Rollers - maybe it's the Tartan look?

They did go through a glitter-rock popstar career phase, though (the Wombles, that is - the BCR were just puppets...), I remeber seeing clips of them on TOTP in full Womble suits doing "Remember You're A Womble" replete with flying V electric guitars, etc. With that & the Goodies appearing as rock stars having hits, (& a certain Mr Savile - hawk, spit), I don't think TOTP was ever weirder than the mid-70s...

Yeah. I'm all for properly structured code that's legible, but having it enforced on me by TABs reminds me of FORTRAN programming. And that's never a good thing! :) If I want to indent using SPACEs then the compiler shouldn't winge at me as long as I've got the syntax right.

But I'm a bit of an old fart in these respects as I still miss the days when Pascal and Modula-2 were THE languages to use! :)

Yeah ... I told you all weeks ago that they were both getting back together to do this months CC. I'd like to see them play their movie characters set in the aftermath of the movie.

I don't know about it being a 50th Anniversary. From what I've seen and heard, it seems to be more a 8th Anniversary unless they're keeping a lot underwraps.

I tend to avoid spoilers.

Daphne sounded completely different from her natural voice on Exterminates pod cast which aired a couple weeks ago.

It's almost like she has a fake yank (Fank?) accent that'll pass the mustard for foreign directors who think this version of Daphney has a more authentically American vibe, which is apropos considering the majority of the intended audience here was/is (wis?) going to be British.

4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 should flash mob somewhere with cameras in full costume... Just larp the shit out of the day.

:D The first computer I ever owned after learning from CBM Pets, BBCs and RM-80s at school. I still fire up the VICE Emulator now and then.

I've done loads of programming in various languages over the years. Never really got into machine-code/assembler, couldn't begin to code a modern game. The 'sweet spot' for me has always been databases, and even that's got less sweet over the years. Used to have a lot of fun (relatively!) using PICK-like systems - the underlying database engine and the programming languages always felt right to me.

Solitaire and Piscyparadox were the first to come to mind for me too... But they are cheats. Not the greatest exemplification of the format. Solitaire is a battle of wits between Charlie and the celestial Toymaker... So really, it could be a full cast audio with an incredibly small cast...And the Piscyparadox has Colin in it as Sixy...Although 5 is wandering about in that one too played by Nicola.

If you're into the cheats there's also a nice one that has Amy and Ace set during/beside the Key to Time 2, which has the two of them bitching about the universe in a jail cell.

Nobber

I'm not sure I'd call them 'cheats', but I think I see what you mean. 'Solitaire' is certainly more of a two-handed play rather than the 'enhanced reading' format of the majority.
