sashabot

I get the feeling that the sky trenches are exactly that: trenches, in the sky.
a moronic concept, especially considering Gallifrey is supposed to be time-misphased like the Medusa Cascade, and the transduction barriers prevent anyone phasing in. They'd better explain this well, or my eyes shall narrow mightily.

After WWI the French built a 25 mile deep wall of trenches and machine gun towers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maginot_Line) covering all of their border with Germany.

The Nazis went around it, cutting through Belgium, and took France in two days.

Was better than I expected. I thought David Bradley and Jessica Raine were brilliant as Hartnell and Lambert but I don't think we can judge most of the other acting when most of the story seemed to centre around those two.

Gatiss did an awesome job bringing the story to life and Moffett is going to have to pull off something spectacular to not be overshadowed by last night's offering.

At this point, the long-time fans have heard pretty much everything that is possible for us to know about the time in which the show originated, so, of course it will seem like there is a lot of dialogue we have already heard.

As an aside, but inspired by this, all the channels really must stop this damn thing of talking over the end of programmes. I was feeling just a tad emotional by the ending and then ... The set is VERY good for the time. Although it does sort of meander a bit. Ironically, there is still the one missing episode, but if it was totally cut out and things were reorganized, it would probably have resulted in a stronger story.

Plus that one guy totally reminds me of Elvis from Fireman Sam..

I think with a bit of CGI magic you could probably 'build' the missing episode from the footage of the other three episodes. There's not many sets used and I'm sure that a sufficiently talented CGI bod could re-work mouth movement to fit the words, or some careful edit where you see the reaction shot rather than the speaker.

That said, I admit my desire to see it is pretty huge.

Assuming the new rumours to be true, it'd be interesting in a few months time to review stories once the glow of "Oh! We FOUND IT!!" has rubbed off. There used to be an excellent podcast (Cadmium2 ?) that was reviewing each and every DW story in order but they stopped early Troughton, but they did do 'Tomb Of The Cybermen' which was lost for a long time and had been venerated to high-heaven by 'old fans' - their review was "yeah, it was OK, but beyond a few set pieces (eg: the breakout) it was a bit 'meh' "

From what I remember HEARING of of Marco Polo it's a good story but, and even taking into account the one week break between episodes, it really is one of those that was dragged out far too long. But I'd love to see the sets, if nothing else. From what we've seen of telesnaps and BTS photos there's no doubt that what it 'lacked' in story-telling it more than made up with in production values.

Good that they didn't veer away from the 'problems' with Hartnell, but didn't dwell either. The appearance of MS was inspired. And lovely to see Jean Marsh & Anneke Wills cameo - didn't expect that!

I know NOTHING IS CONFIRMED as yet, but I'm keeping my fingers firmly crossed- after a slow boring start Anniversary Year has been great for me. Happy anniversary everyone!! I just watched AAiTaS myself. Absolutely wonderful stuff! Couldn't help but shed a tear. Was very moving to see Bill's reaction when Carol Ann left. Not being british myself, I hadn't realized just how many walls DW actually tore down. Verity Lambert is nothing short of a monument! Also watched the latest mini episode. To be honest, I was scared half to death. Haven't seen the Daleks so scary since their first episode with CE. They had to be there for the 50th and if this minisode is any indication, I think they'll be brilliant and just maybe I'll be able to forget the ridiculous Victory episode... I think even Davros would be ashamed of that one!

The End of Time happened the day before the last day, and the day of the doctor happened on the last day... Although it could be a question of hours, since they knew he had the moment in the End of Time and that he was pondering when to use it.

The Master ran to the end of Time at the Beginning of the Time War, you're suggesting that he was sucked into the last day of the Time War in the End of Time, rather than dying in the kerfuffle?

If he was added to the mix at a late date and he wasn't supposed to have, then surely that could have changed what was happen on the last day to some degree?

Nothing's changed. The End Of Time gave us a portrayal of the Time Lords & an account of the Time War that completely contradicted everything the 9th & 10th Doctors had EVER said about them/it (because RTD favoured an epic finale over keeping continuity). The Day Of The Doctor very neatly explained why that was. The Time Lords were only able to return in The End Of Time because of the 11th Doctors actions in Day Of The Doctor!

The hump contains specialist weapons & tools (supposedly) & yes, Moffat did do a u-turn after all the negative feedback the new Daleks received! No, because The Day of the Doctor hadn't happened yet. :)

I've decided to blame 7 for the Time War.

Seven claims that 8 is too much of a wussy to survive, so he clears the universal chess board of all the major players who were keeping both the Timelords and Daleks in check.

If 7 had trusted 8 to fight his own battles and not spent decades destroying elder gods and monsters to build McGann's Doctor a playpen where nothing bad could happen, then the Daleks and the Timelords would never have been allowed to meet head on by the elder powers.

Yup! On either one of the Extras, or Commentary or Confidential (one of them, anyway) Gattis says they just couldn't get the 'hump' to work as a practicable effect and it would cost too much to CGI it all the time. They also say that the realised design doesn't quite match their intention and that it really never quite worked as well as they'd hoped.

I like the idea behnd the design, but it never quite worked for me with the hump-back, short neck, look.

But the new paint job they gave them for Asylum helped at lot, as did moving them to the background a bit.

So half the planet is going to be occupied with Zygons...Did the Doctor think to warn these two civilizations about the millions of Silurians thinking that they have a home on the 22nd century Earth?

And what about the successful Dalek Invasion of 2157?

Meanwhile the 30th century solar storms that cause man to evacuate?

Would the Zygons and Silurians be fine with the radiation?

Do we see the moment destroy Gallifrey and the Daleks in the End of Time?

Nope.

Gallifrey and everything else is just sucked back into the timelocked segment of space time. And once everything is stuck back in the Time War, "when" it's still almost a day before the Doctor uses the moment.

back slash not forward slash.

Other side of the shift button.

Someone jiggered 8.5's memories which tracked forward, wiping memories is not the same as creating false memories, it was probably the Moments conscience. The illusion persisted that Gallifrey was destroyed and the moment was used... This doesn't change what happens in the End of Time or everything the Doctor believes to be real as of Rose, because in the End of Time, the moment both has and has not yet been used.

Why is there a K9 and Friends Christmas special listed as 2013 being dropped online right now?

Righto then; this is the story I see Moffat telling us & why I say nothing has changed:

1. Doctor's 9 & 10 go on & on about the Time War & it's all, pretty much, the same - The Doctor has killed all the Time Lords & Gallifrey has burned away to nothing (& they're quite specific about this).

2. In The End Of Time, we find that, contrary to everything The Doctor has said, Gallifrey is not actually destroyed & The Time Lords aren't dead - they've all been time-locked away from the rest of the universe. They briefly escape, then go back.

3. In Day Of The Doctor, the 3 Doctors go back to the Time War & decide that, instead of killing the Time Lords, they are going to lock them away from the rest of the universe, letting everyone think they're all dead. They realise, though, that Doctors 8.5, 9 & 10 will not remember this & will go through life thinking they've destroyed Gallifrey & killed the Time Lords.

4. Doctor's 9 & 10 go on & on about the Time War & it's all, pretty much, the same - The Doctor has killed all the Time Lords &...

K9 Adventures. A Christmas Tale (2013) has nothing to do with the Medic. It's a feel good hallmark movie starring Luke Perry about a dog who saves Christmas from Burglars.

Of course Luke Perry did play the US Inspector Spacetime, so maybe if I tried to watch This K9 Adventures Movie very very carefully...

Why are people saying 8.5? The cameo clearly states 13 Doctors, so that would make JH 9, CE 10, DT 11 (who regenerated back into himself), MS 12 and current PC 13. And he said "make that 13 Doctors". So this is the last regeneration, although the prequel may suggest that the Doctor now uses the elixir of life from the Sisterhood of Karn to regenerate. (Doesn't explain Master except that may be how he kept going after Deadly Assassin)

13 Numerically, yes. "All 13 of them". But, even though Hurt had earned the right to call himself Doctor by the end, it was also stated that he wouldn't remember it, so still not "The Doctor" as such. That said, they've just reissued the 11 Docs anniversary artwork with Hurt inserted, so I'll wait and see what the Moff says! :P

Just got back from the cinema after seeing it there and, apart from the first 2 minutes being blurry coz they cocked up, the 3D was excellent & served the story well. A terrific episode with almost everything I could've reasonably hoped for, with some fantastic surprises and fan 'squee' moments. I loved it IMMENSELY and left the cinema with a HUGE grin on my face. Also loved the little special pre-show bits we got - one with Strax & one with Tennant & Smith - hope we get them on the blu!

I laughed out loud in sheer joy at Capaldi's brief appearance. There were gasps when Tom turned up at the end, and predictable fan-girl 'awwws' for Tennant, especially when he said "I don't want to go" (bleaghhh...)... I just wanted to run around the cinema pumping my fist and screaming "Yes!" when the other doctors all 'cameo-ed' (and I'm pretty sure the living ones - except, I guess Eccles - all recorded new lines. Lovely reference to the "UNIT Dating" kefuffle, too!

All in all, a PERFECT celebration, and, like GoldenTalesGeek, my faith in Moffat is strengthened & renewed. Will watch again tonight. Looks like Xmas will answer some questions, too. Can't wait for the Capaldi years!

SmugglerTrev, the question of possible (yet unlikely) changes to the timeline that I was suggesting, that you were trying to explain to me didn't happen, had nothing to do with the medic. I loved it! My nephew was over to take care of something and he came in and watched it from 15 minutes in. Never saw an ep before and he liked it. Fingers crossed that I can get him hooked now!

I think it's safe to say that CE is still the ninth medic despite the fact that he's the tenth version of this particular timelord. All the merchandise isn't going to be changed to bump everybody up a number and PC doesn't get to be unlucky 13. I still think they'll throw the regen limit out the window.

It was somewhat criminal that they didn't at least mention Rassilon and that scheme to make it fit established events.

To clarify something: 10 saying the time war was time locked has nothing to do with Gal current status. The fact that the war can't be entered has nothing to do with whether or not the planet was destroyed. You simply can't time travel back into the war.

The curator needs explaining.

I think this would have been a good time to show us PC costume.

I'll take half a regen over no regen.

When the hell are we going to find out who blew up the tardis in season 5?

andyb2011
11-24-2013, 09:53 AM
Didn't EoT take place will before DoTD?

If so then Rassilon tried to break out of the time lock and escape the war but was foiled and Gallifrey was sent back. The rest of the war played out until the events of DotD when the 3 docs came up with their plan.

Seeing the explosion the doc didn't know if he'd killed the Time Lords or not, until the conversation with TB.

So there's no actual conflict between the 2 stories cos they take place at different stages of the war.

guygardener
11-24-2013, 10:28 AM
The End of Time happened on the day before the last day of the time war.

The Day of the Doctor happened on the last day of the time war.

Time locking means that nothing changes (All timetravel that has happened is all the time travel that ever will have happened.) and nothing gets in or out.

(Things have gotten out. I know.)

Using clumsy terms, inside the timelock is the entire universe between two points in time.

Which means that what is inside the timelock is as-if/similar to a copy/mirror/alternate universe (yet actually still real), except outside the lock is the universe (which is simultaneously as real) which we know to be real that is free and capable of unpredictable growth and change.

The Doctor used the moment, or seemed to use the moment and the superficial effects of which to Gallifrey is identical because there are clever forces at work making sure time doesn't spin out of control from inconsistencies in the doctors personal timeline.

It doesn't matter if all of his past happened, only that he continues to do everything he's supposed to do because he believes all of his past happened. Cause and effect.

Gallifrey briefly left the timelock, and then returned without anyone important being aware, so that Gallifrey continued on doing what it had always done and no choice but to always do inside the Timelock.

Did anyone think that all of Gallifrey was in the painting?

As for the Curator..
I am of the opinion that he was put in simply as a nod to Tom, who has been shafted pretty regularly either by the B or by himself. Since he has come back into the fold through LC, he has wanted to get more involved overall. While it as cleverly phrased, I just took it as "Tom Baker, The Actor, referring to his time as The Doctor." not "The Fourth Doctor, magically reborn and living in UNIT as a groundskeeper."

Some stuff I *loved* in Five(ish)

I take the exact opposite view, the curator makes it quite clear (IMO) in talking to Eleven that he is a future version who has the power to look like (revisit) his older selves. This ties in with Eleven thinking how good it would be to be the curator in the future

The difference between time line A and time line B.

the moment is a weapon which destroys galaxies.

In Timeline A, if it had ever happened, and not only been just a cunning ruse, Kasterborous burned. The entire galaxy. Woosh! Remember what it looked like after man started removing galaxies to get rid of the Cybermen? Vast open stretches of nothingness.

In Timeline B, which seems to have now happened, since the button pushing was not timelocked even though the rest of the war supposedly was, Gallifrey dimensionally shifted and the Dalek Fleet shot itself. Which means that Kasterborous survived.

Timeline? Wrong word.

I'm talking about (stage magician level) illusions (Send Darren Brown some more flowers.). Planting fake evidence rewriting some memories. This is barely about time travel or time lines at all. :)

Really because of timelocking, effect does not follow cause and it didn't matter if the Doctor pushed the button or not, the galaxy has to burn because that's what the evidence has always indicated had happened, and really how dumb was the Doctor not to ask why the galaxy destroying super weapon didn't destroy the galaxy?

Unless the Moment rewrote it's specs, or annotation about it's specs afterwhich people only think that it's supposed to merely just blow up tiny planets and not entire Galaxies? Unless of course if after the Doctor saved Gallifrey and destroyed the Daleks, once everything was safe, the Moment then destroyed an "Empty" galaxy to cover up the truth?

Years ago, when the Master went looking for Gallifrey, all he said was that "It''s not there" nothing about how there's an hole the size of a galaxy where it used to be.

By the way?

How come the Daleks don't have planet killer super weapons?

The fleet should have been split in two, one to distract the Time lords and the other to trigger a super nova.

Conventional bogstandard weapons against planetary defences?

No wonder they needed a fleet.

What if after Alistair moved on, Tom Osgood from the Daemons, pulled the first original wife, which would make Kate and Osgood half sisters without making her a Lethbridge-Stewart.

Well unless the Brig was still head of the British division that is...He would just blow it up!

He was regular Army in Web of Fear?

Regular Army answers to Parliament, not the crown.

Yes he was, then seconded to UNIT by the time of the Invasion, then off for hot chocolate in Geneva throughout Worzels reign.
Maybe that's why he blew up a lot of shit.... the Government would not let him, but the UN did! lol

Now things get really confusing...
When one says "the ninth Doctor" it can have multiple meanings:

1) The ninth incarnation/body/face in chronological order which would be John Hurt.
2) The ninth actor to play the doctor which would mean Christopher Eccleston.
3) The ninth incarnation to use the title "doctor" which could mean Hurt or Eccleston.

When I hear "the ninth Doctor" I go with 1) although i realise a lot of people picture Eccleston. The same's with Capaldi. He's the last one* - that is thirteenth, but many refer to him as the twelfth. That's going to be hell during discussions ;)

*For the time being. They'll come up with something to raise the limit on regenerations anyway.

Well, if he still has that bondage harness, after he finds some more timelords he can suck out their regenerations using the eye of harmony in the TARDIS... And just because present day Gallifrey is "missing" he still has access to Gallifrey from the past if he wants to dance around a few paradoxes.

Question about DotD, apologize if this question has already been asked.

Why don't Ten and Hurt!Doctor remember the events of DotD? I don't feel as if it is explained very well, other than a throw away line about the time streams being out of sync. I've been trying to find some sort of evidence to support loss of memories after multi-doctor stories. Anyone have any idea?

Remember when Amy couldn't remember Rory?

Timelines out of sync.

I don't feel like those are the same thing. Rory is absorbed by the crack in the wall and is erased from existence. I think that's different from what I asked above.

Please, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. This question has just been bothering me since it aired. I just feel like the explanation in the episode was bare and unhelpful.

Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed DotD. Hurt was fantastic.

Rose spread out across all time, along ab illion different nooks and crannies... When she finally put herself back together again, he memory was swiss cheese about the eternity she spent as a goddess.

The universe forgot/removed the doctor after the second big bang until River gave it's recall the kiss of life.

Eccleston is the Ninth Doctor, and 10th incarnation.
Tennant is the Tenth, & 11th incarnation.
Smith is the Eleventh & 12th incarnation.
Capaldi is the Twelfth & "final" (as if...) incarnation.
John Hurt still does not count as a Doctor, but is the ninth incarnation.

Seems pretty simple to me. When the people in charge say otherwise, then it's otherwise. 'Til then, as Moffat has said "THE NUMBERING DOES NOT CHANGE"

Nothing confusing there, then.

The end.

:)

I understand all of that. I'm just confused about the time streams line.

I'm not sure why Hurt!Doctor and Ten forgot about the events that took place.
