That's what happens when Axanar looks like it might be a better Trek film than the nonsense Paramount has put out in recent years.

Axanar was involved in some very shady financial business, making a profit off of Paramount's copyrighted material. No surprise that Paramount clamped down. Blame the Axanar team that tried to pull a fast one.

guygardener
06-23-2016, 05:25 PM
They hadn't made a profit "yet" because they haven't even begun filming yet (last I checked).

Kickstarting as much money as they did to make as high end a product as they wanted with out checking in with CBS before they started was foolish.

Here's the real nail in the coffin, as far as taxes are concerned, last I checked, they were not a nonprofit institution, but I was told that months ago, and it could have changed, but it's way too late not to have ####ed them, if they finally closed the barn door after the cow bolted.

Besthead1
06-23-2016, 07:49 PM
I honestly think that Paramount has been pretty fair in this. For decades, they've allowed fans to make films without interfering in any way, even though it could technically threaten their copyrights and trademarks. It was only as productions took more and more advantage of that leniency that they started to pay attention. Axanar was the straw that broke the camel's back, and rightly so. The new regulations seem fair to me. As long as you're not making money off of their trademarks, using their characters or actors (which would both make it seem official and actively compete with their own properties) or actively competing with their own products, they're ok with it. That doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

FWIW, Axanar is a registered for-profit California corporation. They were never a nonprofit and never intended to be.

Well, the Axanar people have in theory made a movie that they can Take to China, and make as much money as Transformers III, if they care to never return home.

As long as they dump the final product on Youtube when they're finished, it should all be within reason.

Yes, Paramount seems to be fine with fanfilms that look shite, but consider fanproductions theft if "nerds" may not go see Star Trek beyond if they've already seen Axanar, because apparently all we can stomach is 3 hours every 4 years, and then we get sick of Star Trek.

Axanar teaser trailers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Np_PVbW6y64

Up till a site similar to kickstarter gave Axanar 1.3 million dollars to make a professional looking movie, the only rule was don't make profit.

These are the new rules as of a couple days ago.

These are the new rules as of a couple days ago.

http://www.startrek.com/fan-films

And those rules strangle and stifle the life out of any of the existing fan productions, and make anything beyond a student film untenable in the future. Ceebs/Par still got their way, and the good will they'd built by "ending" the lawsuit (they actually haven't, and won't, it now comes out), is evaporating. Phase II, Continues, Exeter, Farragut, all these fan productions do nothing but help the brand, and keep interest alive. But under these draconian "guidelines," they all have to end.

P@ramount killed the amateur (all profits to charity) Trek Fan Convention scene in the UK well over a decade ago, by suddenly demanding tens of thousands in appearance fees for their current stars. As for that particular Astral Journey fan flick lawsuit, it's still on, and the guidelines don't change that. The guidelines also allow for the possibility of some flexibility, if I recall correctly. Wouldn't surprise me if some day we're back to where things were, with the difference that certain people are strictly enjoined from any such activity ever again.

VK is divided into participation "gr0ups". The group we are looking at and using is a "public" group called Cl@ssic. Look for a button that says "join this group" because Cl@ssic is a clone/copy of a "private group" called Exp@nded who lost access to Exp@nded's library after Exp@nded closed it's doors (became "private" which means that membership/access is restricted.) after Large Conclusion lawyers scared them into locking their doors and not letting any new random passer by people in to see their collection of links. VK is Russian Facebook, Cl@ssic and Exp@nded is just each one person, out of millions of VK account holders, on Russian faceboook. VK is fine, but one solitary account holder on Russian face book could easily find themselves in a world of pain.

At any moment Cl@ssic might decide to also become a private group, and you will lose access. So "join" it for goodness sake while they are still public and will accept anybody. (You press one button.) Private Groups chose who they accept as new members. Exp@nded doesn't let new people join because they think that Large Conclusions is coming to get them.

Just to be clear, ever since Exp@nded locked itself 2 years ago, Cl@ssic hardly ever updates it's library any more because the "dedicated" original up-loaders of material belong to Exp@nded.
\

again best not to have links in the open .... and frankly people ARE getting sloppy [Matt looking at you .... but if you want to flaunt it that will be another source gone because someone couldn't be bothered]

Despite the stellar cast, I couldn't enjoy this. I really tried. After two episodes, I gave up. I think they missed what made this show great. Or maybe I just couldn't reconcile it with my love of the old series? Which is weird to me, because I'm not usually such a nostalgist that i can't appreciate a new take on an old classic.

Ah - Just realized they were ones downloaded using del37's suggestion about using the source page (#34806 )
such as the little girls toy of the grim reaper { alternate names can be tricky - hope I am doing this right }

Now that that site has changed to the new version, that suggestion unfortunately no longer works.

The couple I have downloaded from here seem fine. Thank you EM.

Life's strange coincidences, number 94...

Today we mourn the start of the Battle of the Somme, and remember that war is only good for the rich and powerful who are in safe positions to profit from the misery,
and the next story up on my DWMR listening list is - number 89.
(okay, set in 1917, but still, what were the odds?)

Then on June 29th, same thing. Now again I am being sent back to the old.

I use FF and have am now using an addon. However I did see on the plugins page, different references to the new site:
a few samples {translated from russian}:

Also, before the site change the old VK you could go to a music page and play music, so I could play music all day without a VK account. Since the New.VK change you can't play music unless your logged in so I had to create an account.-->

I haven't watched my Space: 1999 DVDs enough to feel the need to upgrade to blu-ray. It is tempting, though. Moonbase Alpha was a great setting and the Eagles were one of the best spaceship designs ever on TV.

SPACE: 1999 is another series that I desperately need to get.
I used to love it (watched it each week, along with...)

UFO - which was a series that I absolutely needed to get on DVD (and did), as the designs were fab!

Sadly, I have only just now got (received 2nd-hand) an HD tv to even consider bothering with blu-ray.
(Tho, the HDMI slot is knackered, so unless I can get the right Composite cord to use my PS3, it won't matter anyway).

But yes... Any Gerry Anderson production is worth getting in the highest resolution possible.
(OK... maybe not Thunderbirds. I'd imagine it'd be harder to hide the wires on HD)

Yeah, with a travelling Moon sometimes it feels like a starship. I have to keep remembering this.

Actually, I wonder if this stimulated George Lucas's imagination re the Death Star, you know, travelling moon? Doubt if he would have seen it, but you never know.

I know they had to reject an early Millennium Falcon design as it too much resembled an Eagle. Disposable address is right though - I love their design.

George Lucas originally approached Brian Johnson in 1976 to do the special effects for the first Star Wars film. Johnson was busy with Space: 1999 Year Two, but in 1979 he was in charge of effects for the sequel, The Empire Strikes Back.
The standard of effects in Space: 1999 was a stated benchmark for the special effects in Star Wars. Lucas insisted the models and explosions should be better than seen on the television series.
The early design for the Millenium Falcon was vetoed by George Lucas as it closely resembled the Space: 1999 Eagle (described in Robert Brown's detailed Star Wars ship commentaries). Early designs and concept models featured side legs, rear engines, side docking ports and a cone shaped nose that looked even more like the Eagle. A hammerhead was added to the model and it appeared on screen as the Blockade Runner, the first ship seen in the film. The Millennium Falcon was redesigned as a saucer shaped craft, the rush job creating serious inconsistencies between sets and model.

He had a mobile moon-sized battle station in the script for Star Wars as early as the first draft (May 1974, as immortalized in DH's comic adaptation), about midway through the shooting of the first season of Space 1999 (it premiered September '75). Hard to imagine how he could have gotten wind of it though. Most likely it was just a case of great minds thinking alike.

The Superman mythos has now seen the end of an era. While she wasn't the original Lois Lane (that goes to three actresses to portray Lois on the old radio show) she was the first Lois to appear live-action on screen, starting with the Kirk Alyn Superman movie serials. I can' begin to tell you people how many times I've watched that old TV so show (have them all on DVD). And no, I'm not old enough to have been around when it first aired in 1951. yep I think Lucas used it as a template to better , which he surely did, but its an interesting bit of tv sci-fi history and shows how much Gerry Anderson,Irwin Allen, Ray Harryhausen etc helped shaped todays Sci-fi offering.
Incidentally having rewatched a couple of episodes of UFO last night, with its cigars, chain smoking,whisky/bourbon dispenser, string vests, mini skirts and all round leering , it just wouldnt be made nowadays ;)

But some of the stories hold up really well. I saw it as a kid then found some VHS tapes many years later and was surprised how much more mature it could be than I remembered. It's a better show in many ways than Space: 1999, arguably.

Anyone seen the movie Space Station 76? It's a weird take on domestic 70s family drama but set in a space station with a 70s SF TV look. It's not a comedy, though it can be funny; it's basically pretty bleak. Probably a love it or hate it thing.

(Sorry for the offtopic stuff.)

Weren't there rumours of an S1999 'reboot' knocking around last year? Wonder what happened to the idea?

The original did get a bit silly, but a modern taken on what would *really* if the moon were suddenly ripped from orbit would be quite interesting. Not one that just concentrated on the moon but what also happened back on earth, too.

A friend got me into this show about a decade ago. Really loved the look, sets, models etc. Some of the plots were kinda triply but I was into Season 1. Season 2.. while they generally maintained the high production standard had too many cast/tone changes for me. Some really low brow stinkers in there. But there were still a couple of good ones. Season 1- I loved Breakaway, Voyager's Return, Earthbound, Black Sun, Dragon's Domain, and the Troubled Spirit. I think the key is that they spent like 14-15 months shooting season 1 so the episodes come off looking like small features. The Blu Ray is fantastic. I see Season 2 also get a Blu Ray finally in R2. It's likely to hit R1 eventually, and purely as a completist I might get it.

MANY THANKS to

Canyonwolf

It's thanks to all you people that keep me sane during my multi-hour daily commute.

(although, I've not had any LC audios all week, as I've been forced to chew up my personal days this week due to a shot alternator - that I ALREADY had replaced less than a year ago [and the crooked Monro chain that did it only give a 90 day warranty], so I'm out yet another $700+ - since the only way to take out my alternator is to remove the entire front/right axle...stupid Ford engineers. Last Friday, I had to drive from Long Island, NY to PA with the battery near death, in bumper-to-bumper July 4th weekend traffic, during a severe thunderstorm - so no lights, no wipers, no A/C, no radio or LC AUDIOS...which was the worst part... nothing. Fun times!)

Sorry for the rant.

Wait a minute...You're sane?!!!

Seriously, what a thing to happen. And brave of you to drive in such traffic with your battery not charging! It's not something I'd dare try. What a shame to have the alternator go on you again. I remember when I had the clutch on my old car go and had it replaced, only for that one to stuff up. I took it back and they were trying to say I'd done it myself, dropping the clutch to do burnouts (what, in a clapped out 1974 Ford Escort?!!!Yeah, right!). They just did a stupid job the first time and rectified it.

Ah, cars - such money drainers. Mind you, I found the old cars much easier to do things with - like changing brakes, alternators, thermostat etc. That used to save a bit of money.

Ok, ok, "less INsane".

Yes, it was bad enough that I caught the mechanic and manager in bald-faced lies and had them rectify that particular issues, but they also did poor work AND screwed up my back-up lights and rear object-sensor (which I didn't notice for a few days).

My wife always complains about modern cars; the old ones were easier to fix and with less electronics weren't as likely to break.

I miss my old 1970's Dodge Dart.

Cars can be a major pain especially when you don't really have the money to spare on repairs but have to spend it anyway because you need the car running. I recently had to replace a water pump, thermostat, and radiator hose. Cost an arm and a leg.

MoS I have not forgotten on other two requested bios---holiday weekends are more action packed than the regular ones! :)

Thanks Canyonwolf! Much appreciated. Sorry things have been busier here than normal so I have checked in here less than daily- can you tell me/PM what this RWQ was?

I am finally back in budget so I plan to grab some more IITC/Anderson stuff to share commentary wise and finally finish Scarlet Midget. Whatever Bios are left I'll try and snag too.

Funny the car thing comes up- I'm now shopping for a new vehicle - old one is starting to act up. Too many options! I was about to go hybrid and save some carbon and cash but I noticed most have crappy cargo space. I often have to move large loads or backdrops or even Pepperpot Creator Chairs, so that won't cut it. But… I hate SUV's so go figure. Finding a compromise has been tricky.

I did an audio review of Series 9 with a friend recently. Overall going over it again I was disappointed with the season. Not sure how others felt. and I don't mean to just be a basher for the sake of it. I guess I always hold the show to the glory days of the Classic years.

The people we steal from are very good at stopping us from stealing from them.

There are no grand libraries in this thread anymore.

New stuff shows up, sits around for a day or two and then is removed from play by the uploader before the copyright owner closes/terminates their sendspace account.

I have to confess, passing mustard was the most painful thing I've ever done, couldn't walk properly for days afterwards!

Does anyone know a good site to get the latest picture books from, the one I used to use has gone offline now?

Preferably links via ss, but other sites may be of use.
