I'm the exact opposite: I absolutely love the EDA plot lines - Although I know there's a major anti-Lawrence Miles sentiment out there, I'm a huge fan of his writing; Faction Paradox and Sabbath were the two best things that ever happened to literary Who.

I love the LM stuff too. It's sort of a compliment that all his ideas were subsequently ripped off for the show. Sadly, they were done without acknowledgement. Doesn't seem quite right.

ehhh.
I *DESPISED* FP and Sabbath, probably because they didn't sit at all with my concept of the DW universe.

Antagonists that antithesise not just what the Doctor stands for, but the way his world works, and whom he has to destroy himself to *kindof* defeat...

"You say what we do is impossible? No. It was always possible, as long as you're okay with breaking the Universe. And we are okay with breaking the Universe, that's what we WANT to do!"

The illogic, the left-field tactics and the disregard for everything (including themselves and the long-term feasibility of their plans) make for excellent characters. And a supremely unenjoyable reading experience.

That and the way they're so insufferably smug the whole time.

I had to force myself to finish reading. There may have been shouting and throwing things involved. Kinda glad they were just ebooks, coz if I'd been reading the actual books I'm sure I'd have been tearing pages out and burning them.

Sabbath got better towards the end of it all, but only because he lost some smugness with the revelation he was just a pawn and anyway they'd managed to break the Universe by then. Well done.

Not 'Who' related - but I don't care as I know a few of you will be interested.........

just received my copy of the Unauthorised Guide to the Tomorrow People- Jaunt by Andy Davidson. Its a wonderful piece of work finally doing what the fans want. There's nothing too unusual in its content. A full episode Guide for the original TV series & the 90's remake, plus the BF audios & Piccolo paperbacks. There's a nice bit of background covering the origins of the programme with original story outlines, plus an unproduced script.
It's great as a TP fan to finally have this in my hands

I have a few criticism's (don't we all?)

a lack of images for the Look-In comic strip section

no photos

not available as a download copy

and one final one... this was put on hold from it's original released date so that it could cover (so we were told) the new U.S. re imagined series. This is covered in 1 and 1 third pages at the end of the book & it tells us nothing we don't already know - very basic

still it's definitely worth buying direct from Miwk Publishing if you're a TP fan. 430 pages at 14:99 plus p&p direct from the publisher- not bad

Off the top of my head, I don't think the love was reciprocated.

Which S&S one was it, as there's a couple of sneaky references in some of the later ones after Freemantle pulled the licence leaving LC with a load of stuff recorded (AFAIR most of first two of S7) that they were no-longer allowed to distribute. I honestly can't remember a particular character actually saying what you've just said (so definitely interested in which audio it was) but if you listen to '2nd site' there's a lot of TP in the foley mix from a CD they're listening to.

Not to start another argument, or to recommence the one; over novels vs canon - Lungbarrow was writen a year after the movie was released., the movie's potential scripts are shown in 'The nth Doctor', the final script to the movie was formalised in 1994/5. Marc Platt, whilst a fine writer, is one of those who 'throw everything out to have his plot work'...
The movie never states that Romana is the president, and where are the Doctors companions during the action??, in a cupboard??,

I'm with DSM, ignore all Virgin books, with their strange tangents, and only read [if you must] BBC authorised canonical ones [preferably extensions of TV episodes]. :)
I was only replying to your critiques of the Virgin books:
the 'Virgin' novels don't have a tie in with the 'Movie' as the reason for his regeneration.....
Yes Lungbarrow was written after the movie but its still a tie-in and it does address The Doctor's upcoming regeneration. In the following story, Dying Days, Bernice meets up with The Doctor again this time in his 8th incarnation. Again while written later it still ties in with the movie and thus in Virgin books continuity the 7th Doctor meets his end in San Francisco.

and where are the Doctors companions during the action??, in a cupboard??,
The 7th Doctor departs from Gallifrey alone knowing that the recovery of the Master's remains on Skaro could be his last. Romana even gives him the sonic screwdriver to aid him.

A boy up stairs listening to cds.

That's surprisingly early in the series than I remembered. Been an age since I've heard it, but I do have vague memory of the boy and the CD, though. Was the series actually name-checked though, or was it just alluded to? With both series mainly being done by Lidster and Fairs it wouldn't surprise me that there was a nod-or-two somewhere.

(Of course, earlier I meant S6 of TP, not S7 - that was wishful thinking on my part!)

Gosh! I've only just noticed that D.Chain has the ridiculously sexy Private Helga Geerhart as guest star.

I really must give these another spin soon.

Hi all,

First time poster here but a long time reader of this thread.

I am trying to expand my collection and I have a few requests for audio dramas featuring a certain medic, as well as a number of spin offs. Some may have been posted here already, but the links have since expired.

So that I don't upset the rules of this thread, I just wondered what/where the best way to post my requests would be? Can I just give the titles or is it better to post them in "code"? Or is there someone I can PM with my list?

Thanks in advance

I can 2nd the usenet suggestion. A decent server should have a good 99% of output (along with xvids and dvdrips of the TV episodes) and current titles tend to appear more often these days.

Most series would be happy with destroying Atlantis just the once, with one cause. Not the Medic, though. That's one of the fun things I really like. One theory I read online somewhere is that it's a big place, so different bits get destroyed in different ways.

Just wanted to say a big thank you to the poster who uploaded my two requests. Really kind, thank you!

I also really appreciate the suggestions made about where to find some additional links to supplement my collection. I'm familiar with the audiobook bay, but the gaps in my collection really rest with the more recent Target book readings (the past 12 months or so) which haven't appeared there yet.

That being said, I wondered if I could offer up a couple more requests if any kind person could oblige...

1. The audiobook reading of the third medic and the Devils from the Sea; and

2. The audiobook reading of the fourth medic and the Tara Androids, which is an audio exclusive.

Thanks for all your help so far!

Slightly OT, but for any fans in London on the anniversary, there is going to be a party which is free to attend (although limited to 1,500):-

A party celebrating the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who is to be held in London in November.

Organised by Jeremy and Paula Bentham together with Tony Clark, The Doc Lands @ 50 Party will be free to attend and will take place at a venue in Docklands on Saturday 23rd November, starting around 7pm after the BBC's Doctor Who 50th Celebration at ExCel has ended that day. The party is open to all people aged 18 and over, whether or not they are going to the ExCel event.

Jeremy told Doctor Who News:
The ultimate form of celebration is getting together to share an enthusiasm. Doctor Who fans have been sharing their passion for the programme since the '70s, but doing it on 23rd November 2013 is definitely the light on top of the police box, and will be a great occasion to don your party hats fez, stetson, astrakhan, fedora, Paris Beau, or panama . . .
If the broadcast of the anniversary episode and any other Doctor Who programming by the BBC coincides with when the party is taking place, it will be shown on the venue's large-screen TV.

Food and drink will be available to buy at the party although fish fingers and custard will not necessarily be on the menu!

Entry to The Doc Lands @ 50 Party will be by allocated ticket only, and capacity is strictly limited to 1,500 places. To apply for tickets, e-mail Jeremy at [email protected] by Monday 9th September, using the subject line Doc Lands ticket applications and stating your name as well as how many people will be in your group. Before applying, though, people are urged to consider their transport options for getting home afterwards, as the party will finish late.

Successful applicants will be contacted in early November, when they will be told the exact location of the party and will be sent their group or individual tickets too.

Since the show's return to TV in 2005, the organisers have held a series of highly popular event parties in London.

Jeremy Bentham is a well known expert on all things Classic Who. The co-founder of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society in 1976 — was one of Doctor Who Weekly's two original writers. From roughly the end of the Weekly era until 1982, he was the only writer of the publication. (MM VHS 18)

Although his formal title was "associate editor", editors Dez Skinn and Paul Neary gave him a largely free hand to decide what textual content the magazine would have each week — since he would also have to write it. This gave him a kind of influence over the direction of the magazine that was not true of most people who subsequently held the title of "associate editor". (MM VHS 47) However, this also meant that the magazine was entirely dependent on Bentham's ability to write each issue. He left in 1982, some two-and-a-half years after Weekly had morphed into Monthly. (MM VHS 18)

Later, he wrote the reference book Doctor Who: The Early Years and contributed to Doctor Who: A Celebration by Peter Haining.

John Hurt played Caligula opposite Derek "The master" Jacobi's Claudius in the 70's phenomenon I, Claudius... You would think that there would be a fan edit out supposing a tiff between the Master and the Hurt Doctor using that ancient footage during the time war that would be curiously unsettling by now.

I finally listened to the 4 Medics today. Never had to turn an LC story off before, but I hated that one. So so boring.

I am a bit of a blind supporter about stories with 8 in, I don't lie about liking any but I am much more forgiving.

Does anyone like this story?

I honestly quite enjoyed it. I do think it was a bit cliche to include the Pepperpots in it, but it was still a pretty solid timey-wimey story nonetheless. I especially liked the meeting of the Medics at the end, particularly this exchange between Six and Eight:

6: What have you done to the TARDIS interior design, by the way?
8: I hope you are not about to lecture me about taste, Doctor.
6: I'm not sure what you mean.

I also quite liked Seven's remark regarding Eight: "Yes, I thought you must be the latest model. You're the only one I don't recognize."

It definitely wasn't the finest LC has to offer, but I liked it well enough. I found Yellow-bellied Feline much more boring.

Ooo! Now THAT"S good.

But how about "Dark New Stories" - In the context of these sort of things 'Adventures' tends to me something generally Positive - not something always guaranteed in the DS universe.

I am very keen to find an e-book copy of the fan published anthology Perfect Timing, which was mentioned in a post above with some download links which are no longer valid. Perfect Timing II would be great also but I mainly desire the first.

You know, it's really surprising to me, especially in light of the 50th anniversary, as well as the increasing popularity of ebooks, that the Beeb/Virgin didn't try to use this as an opportunity to renew interest in these titles by converting them to ebooks. I've always been a little conspiracy theorist about this subject. I've not read the classic series yet but I'm almost through the NSAs. They are most definitely aimed at a younger audience. Since most were released before we had any onscreen time with the medics or their companions it's not surprising that they lack those little touches/catch phrases that differentiate the various medics. They just don't really capture the feel of the show most of the time. If they had all the classic books available as an alternative, I think it's safe to say the sales would suffer. That said, some of the books are out there but good luck running a search for PDA and seeing what comes up. The organization is apalling.

If you mean DG, then there's a Hallowe'en special mentioned in the digital booklet, so there's that at least (& the original 'Painting' adaptation...).

I was wondering that, too, as we know ...

DG gets to meet a certain archaeologist in the future.

This has been an excellent series, though. Admit I was a tad sceptical when the line was announced, but they've been far better than I'd expected.

Thanks Nobber, Jacksonhill and Hellbelly for the input. :) I've bought a bunch of the audios lately - SJS, some CCs, DG and quite a few of the main range - but the boxed sets are expensive enough that I can't justify the cost without really knowing they'll be good.

The second set is definitely better (if still lacking in energy, IMHO) so there's signs of improvement. The whole lot just needs a better director - I note these are done by my least favourite director, Can Barely - to put a proper spark of life into the whole thing. There's some very good actors and writers being let down by a lack-lustre director and soundscape.

(But insert obligatory 'it's still better than g-less' snide comment from me here)

Thought the first story of s2 was awful, but the rest were an improvement, even the sequel to the first story! And as usual, the superb Games Joss wrote the best of the lot by far (the 'bunker' story)...

(And riding a greased, smelly piggy while dressed in a moose skin would be better than G-less - well, the first 2 series anyway, the 3rd was ok...)

Yeah it's much better than Reign and more WHO like but far below Invasion which was pretty damn fine in my opinion. It's kind of on a par with 10 Planet 4, haven't made up my mind if it's better or worse than that.

Maybe my scores for animation would be

Invasion : 9
Mission to the Unknown: 6.5
Tenth Planet 4: 6
Ice Warriors: 6
Reign of Terror: 4.5

It's much more smoother but it's still a bit crappy. But that's to be expected given that it's a low selling DVD range with a tiny budget for extras. It's OK for the odd episode to fill in the gaps but a 6 episode reconstruction of something would just be embarrassing and make a laughing stock of the range when you compare it to proper animated shows.

Basically it works for what it is - something to look at whilst the soundtrack is playing - but it's not proper Medic episodes

Thanks for the feedback on the Icey animation. Won't be holding my breath to get it.

I've seen before, and it's a suggestion that I fully back, that the BBC should open up the 'reconstructions' as a competition. There's shed-loads of talented amateurs out there to 'crowd source' a decent product. All the Beeb would have to do is go "here's a few rules for 2d/3d, here's a script to keep to for camera movement etc, and here's some very high quality assets (pictures, 3d models etc) for you to use. You've got a year. Go for it."

Yup, Quantum Leap was wonderful. And frankly, I have a soft spot for Time Trax, as bad as it could be.

If you go back further, you get to Voyagers, which was pretty awful, and The Time Tunnel, which had its moments, but was mostly just bland and uninspired.

There was 9.

It was excellent.

Near the end Bruce Campbell played a dirty Time Cop trying to get his end away with time.

And the lead was played by Andy from Charmed, who was the love interest for the first couple seasons who could never quite prove what was so freakishly odd about those Halliwell sisters.

And when NCIS finally gets cancelled... Which character is going to be enveloped in a Blue aura and leap out of that series?

Cote De Pablo is leaving this year ...

(Which is a shame. Whilst I normally prefer the fuller figured young lady, I'll make an exception for her. Especially like this ... Cote De Pablo - Temptation (full version) - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zX0gDdZFiJ4))

There was also the rather short-lived Timecop series. There were only a handful of episodes, less than 10, I think. I didn't see many of them, but it was considerably forgettable...

"Crime Traveller' - Now there was an underrated series. Which had Chloe Annet. Which is nice.

Anyway, the total Benny Summer to help robncat12, and whomever else may be concerned.

Can't thank you enough for this! I've always wanted to expand my collection!

If you've seen Colin Baker, you're spoiled for all other Doctors. McCoy and McGann are terrific in person, and even though Davison is nice on stage, in person I found him less charming. Colin is the grand raconteur. An all around great guy.

And who can forget the Great Bird of the Galaxy's show proposal, masquerading as a Stellar Trecc ep entitled Assignment: Terra? A show what would have featured Garey 7 and not his companion flying through time in Not a Blue Box, using not a sonic screwdriver? xD

Speaking of Medic Magazine uploads, has anyone ever seen scans of "Insider" or "Adventures" floating around anywhere?

This sentence may contain spoilers, which of course would make it more aerodynamic, and therefore more maneuverable at high speeds.
It is also merely another test and should not be the cause of any undue alarm.

hah! having a "discussion" with 10yo - when the medic is using his screwdriver - sometimes he'll scan something and then look at his screwdriver - what is he looking at on it? Does it have a screen with readouts on it?

and then sometimes he just scans something and immediately knows the result without even looking at it - does he have a psychic link with it?

and if so...why does he ever have to look at it after scanning???

*sits back and waits for the fireworks*

he designed the screwdriver, he's said so on a few occasions, so it's very conceivable that he may have a psychic link to it...who knows.

Romana had a screwdriver and Amy had a probe.

Would that mean that Romana and the Doctor both mentally widgetted in and out of their screw drivers, especially since they sometimes shared their screw drivers... And could they both log on at the same time?

Amy's probe probably couldn't link with her puny human brain even if it had psychic features, but it still got the job done.

A combination of all the above? A mini-screen with readouts (that Matt seems to actually LOOK at, DT and CE just seem to glance at). The various warbles and whistles give feedback. And a - snigger - vibrational element.

And stuff.

maybe he can tell by how vigorously it vibrates....

he does seem to look at a display from time to time.

But I assumed it was more about the sounds that the screw driver made which told hm stuff.

Of course if most of the noise the screw driver makes is beyond the ranges of human hearing... :)

Any time Amy's probe wants linking to get the job done... (fnarr fnarr, overworked innuendo-a-go-go...) ;P

Saw Mr. Sixie myself at FanExpo - though I know him pretty well from my time in the U.K. I agree - he was on good form on this trip.

If you're in Toronto, remember that Peter Davison will be at Chronic Hysterisis (sp?) in November. Before that - and this is the one I'm really looking forward to - DWIN has An Evening with Philip Hinchcliffe in October.

I actually live in London (about two hours away from Toronto).

It was stated in "Let's Kill Hitler" that there is a psychic interface with at least 11's. Amy says it while on the Tessalecta
As stated on the TARDIS wikia, Amy states that the sonic screwdriver can be used by "pointing and thinking".

I am just not a fan of the magic Super-Screwdriver of the more recent series'. It is just used to make the series less wordy, while the Doctor used to have to explain things or come up with clever ways to approach problems, he now just waves his magic wand and that is pretty much it.

I would not be shocked if he uses it during the Time War to blow the hell out of some Daleks.

Or unscrew their bumps?

The Timelord hand gun used by the chancellery guard is called a maser.

(The weapon('s design) could be ancient and as usefully nonceremonialy as a Beefeaters pike to fight terroism.)

What's the scientific principle behind that?

wikipedia says

"Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation".

Yeah it's much better than Reign and more WHO like but far below Invasion which was pretty damn fine in my opinion. It's kind of on a par with 10 Planet 4, haven't made up my mind if it's better or worse than that.

Maybe my scores for animation would be

Invasion : 9
Mission to the Unknown: 6.5
Tenth Planet 4: 6
Ice Warriors: 6
Reign of Terror: 4.5
Am I the only one who liked the animation for The Reign of Terror? The animation for The Invasion is alright but I don't like the cut out doll look to it. I liked the Reign of Terror due to the more detailed look of it.

Actually the Gallifreyan guard used Stasers. a Maser is what the Valeyard had in the matrix in Trial of a Time Lord and was going to use that to assassinate the Time Lords in the courtroom before the Doctor set it to feedback into the matrix.
