Glad you were. While I thought JW was good, I find that the writing seems more of the same. Swap out to MS, #11, and it could be him saying those lines. I know it's just a snippet, but if such a snippet closely follows how things went before... I know the character is and always has been slightly eccentric but it should be organic. I hate overt writing - oh look, I said on the tip of my tongue, so I'll show the tip of my tongue. That could be written by Moff. I'm sick of that type of writing. Number 3 and number 4 were eccentric, but it came more from the person playing the part. Look, they had the guts to change the sex, but not to have the metaphorical balls to change up the writing. I got sick of the Moff's stale style and predictability and this plays upon those same lines. I hope things are going to be different, I really do. Let's see come October.

I'm completely with you, on that! I think one of the big problems with Nu-Who is that the different Doctors are just different actors all playing the exact same character. In classic Who, the writing was more specific to the lead actors, making each Doctor a different, individual person. That is no longer the case & the show suffers as a result. For example, the whole rattling off explanations at a thousand miles a second thing, suited Eccleston & Tennant far more than it did Capaldi but the writers seem to have completely lost sight of the fact that it's not just his face he changes!

Yes, you've hit on something. The actors in the role don't really have their own personality. While it's meant to be the same person underneath you could just swap the actors around and you wouldn't know the difference really. Looking at the classic series you couldn't say the same thing about the various actors. The rattling off explanations at a thousand miles a second is a good example. They do it ALL the time. The production team must think it makes the character seem so smart, but I'm tired of it. It's all the same. You're so right that in the classic series that the writing was more specific to the lead actors.

I think they got hampered by Ten's popularity. After Davey left they figured the only way to keep viewers interested was to make Eleven as much like ten as they could and when that worked they just figured they'd repeat it with Twelve. Maybe that was why Peter left. Producers wouldn't let him make the Medic his own. They just wanted more of the same.

Definitely. Especially since he acted toe-to-toe with Michael Gambon in the "Christmas Carol" ep and made it look effortless. He's amazing when given really great material.

Exactly.

Everybody's worked very well, they've just be let down by the writing.

Also, when you look at the snippet of what JW (again, nothing wrong with her) had to work with in that little scene we saw - it's delivered in the same fashion as the Medics before her in Nu Medics. It's the SAME. I thought, now that things were fresh, a female lead, that it would be a fresh start, but it's the SAME. It's like the stale "I'm not ginger".

Hmm, and how do you think the fans would react to the character having the alien equivalent of PMT, or getting broody - or even reproducing! now that its got the relevant equipment 'built in', as it were? That would be different, and even kind of logical for a female version.

In Classic Who many of the early stories of the new Medics were actually written for the previous ones. Terrence Dicks regularly said that there is one character: the Medic, and that he writes them all the same. While I don't agree, an argument could be made that most of the changes in character of the early Medics were mostly cosmetic. Yes, they're somewhat different, but no more different than the last four Medics have been. And they have been VERY different characters. Seriously, you think that PCap and DTen were written the same?!?

As for this scene, are we really judging how her character is going to written based on a 52 second post-regeneration scene?!?
Perhaps some of you are just seeing what you expect to see, even if it isn't there?

Most new Medics take a full season to fall into what their character will ultimately be, both in the writing and in the acting.
But we're giving this woman and writer/showrunner only 52 seconds to dazzle us?

What I find is that it's a short snippet, but out of the whole one hour episode (or however long it's supposed to be) the part that it is, is done in exactly the same manner - the rapid-fire speaking, the pointing to the tongue as to portray the eccentricity. I'm not judging what I haven't seen yet, but if this is indicative, then I'm annoyed. As I say, out of all the episode, the bit that's leaked is something that's been done all throughout the Nu era, exactly the same. As I've also said, it's not about judging how her character will be, I'm complaining about the writing. The actors/actresses can only work with the material given.

I disagree. Look at the scenes with Amelia in Eleventh Hour and imagine Ten saying the lines about fish fingers and custard. Look at how Twelve is very clear about not being Clara's "boyfriend". They are all different.

Not really different than 4's early scenes, either, though. A really smart person who's just undergone a major change trying to figure out who/what/where/when/why he/she is now while their brain is rattled. Perhaps it's the obvious writing choice. But that's because it makes sense.

Let's see what her characterization is like in episode 2 (or better yet, episode 10) before we even try to say anything about the writing of the character.

You could also argue that it represents 'look, it's still the same show, same character, you don't need to panic because it's now a woman'. It's gently leading us through the transition by showing us something we're already comfortable with.

They've done the same thing with the jokes like six and seven trying on previous Doc's costumes, Romana II in 4's costume, 10 in the scarf etc.

Yes, but 4's early scenes were new when they came out, they came a long time ago. How about doing something different? My complaint is that they're doing things in exactly the same way, the same writing. It's stale now.

Yes, I get the feeling they're playing it safe, which sucks. I'm bored with the writing now. As I've said before, they had the metaphorical balls to change the character's sex, but not the balls to follow it up with fresh writing (based on the snippet that leaked, which they could have chosen anything out of the hour long episode, but represented it with something that has the same old writing and manner).

And, I hated the bits with Rom II, with her trying on different bodies. Douglas Adams contributed some excesses to the show that went too far. Though, for the odd story it works well (City of Death).

Oh well, I'll still be watching come October and I'm hoping that it's not just more of the same (ie from the Grand Moff's second half of his era). I want to see something that feels fresh. I'm sure that everyone's giving it their all, working hard. I felt that things started to get back on track with the last series (barring the three Monk centric episodes, which bored me to death). I hope that Jodie gets to stamp herself on the role and bring something great to the part.

Could be just a test run to see how such a prominent franchise does on audio media. If so it may lead to more maybe even bringing in the casts of tng, ds9 and voyager for full cast audio adaptations of the post finale novels and some of the original book series like new frontier, titan and department of temporal investigations.Maybe they could do a deal with Disney and do original Gargoyles audios.

It clearly is a test to see demand for the franchise. Now you might say "Its Trek... of course there is a demand", however what you have to remember is that the rights to this franchise are astronomical in the extreme. These 3 releases are English versions of a product that was released in Germany, and not attached to any of the core series. IF these do well, and there is a demand, who knows what it MAY lead to, HOWEVER that does depend (and this is the point that is contrary to this site), it will boil down to $$ and who actually PAYS for it!

Strange that this expensive franchise has come from out of the blue just a few days after Briggsy has been highlighting piracy within the podcast!

Personally like others, I favour full cast offerings, rather than audio books, and these releases hold no interest for me, HOWEVER I would be interested in said full cast or even a CC style thing.... (it worked for SG1 after all!), but its all going to boil down to the bottom line!

Yes. I wonder how much interest it will get, and what comes of it in the end. I do wonder if they'll stretch themselves too far. Though, if it does bring in those new to LC, it will be job done for them. Seeing as it's really just the Medic lovers who are the bulk of their custom. I gather though, that a lot of us are fans of both franchises. I wonder if it works that that fans of Stir Truck are necessarily fans of the Medic though?

This Astral Journey series is probably due to some odd things happening with the licencing lately. The main publisher of fiction has been negotiating the renewal of its contract for a year or more, possibly complicated by the fact that the movie and TV production companies used to be the same then split up and then were rumoured to be reuniting. Meanwhile, a British company got limited rights to do certain types of books, including the English versions of books originally published in German. My guess is that the UK company has audiobook rights but not the resources, so it was outsourced to Figbin. If the latter can do anything more than straightforward audiobooks of the UK publisher's titles, I will be very surprised. (Not necessarily unpleasantly so.) I doubt we'll see original full cast dramas -- of any variation of Astral Journey -- any time soon, though. Otherwise, I think Figbin would have made a much bigger deal of this.

Of course, I could be wrong.

It may very well lead to something more. For CBS/Viacom/wherever the rights end up it's a proof of concept. If it is successful in relative terms then I fully expect more output. If my Neelix cookbook taught me anything its that ST right holders love revenue streams however small.

As someone else said if they do end up doing full cast Stur Blech audios the spin off series would be the best way to go. New Frontiers, SCE, Section 31, even adventures aboard Enterprise during the time of George Kirk and Robert April. Series that don't require any of the name actors from the various tv series would be a cheaper and likely more attractive option.

Yes, you just can't manufacture the chemistry people had in the original, nor expect to recreate another's performance. I think, if you were to do anything, it would be to have your own characters and tell the type of stories they used to. I would be willing to watch what they came up with though, just to see.

Agreed, great to have him back! In fact, I think whole sixie trilogy this year has been rather good, some interesting things being done with companions. I also thought #235 in February was one of the best BF's ever. Hope they can keep this standard up.

I think the main range has improved a lot over the past year or so. No epic sagas (but I think that's where BF often overreaches itself) but more enjoyable, stand alone, sci-fi stories.

That almost sounds like you're talking about the TV series!Except it's not. In my opinion series 10 was the the worst of the lot. There really isn't a single strong episode in the entire run. I recently tried rewatching it and barely made it through three episodes before I had to quit. Wal-Mart has the complete series box set for under $20 and I honestly am struggling with whether it's worth buying...even for the sake of completing my NuWho run.

While I thought the last series was an improvement , I really mean that it would be better if the series focuses less on epic sagas and work for enjoyable, stand alone stories. I didn't quite make my point clear!

I didn't quite make my point clear! Oh I agree there. The series long subplot needs to be done away with completely. It wasn't so pervasive during RTD's run and episodes could be enjoyed as stand alones, but the Moff went overboard and made the subplot so integral to the stories, especially during 12's run, that it's hard to enjoy the episodes on a single story basis. I'd like Chibbers run to return to the one and done format of the classic era but from what I've heard ( I've never seen Broadchurch) he's more enamored with the convoluted subplot than Moff was so I don't hold much hope for a return to the old format.

I thought series 10 was a real return to form.
Certainly the best since series 5.
I'd argue that it had the best series finale that Moffat's ever written.

Different strokes I guess

Personally, I thought that S10 was the best in years. While I'd agree that other than the stunning penultimate episode, there weren't any episodes that will likely go on to become all-time classics, there also weren't any bad ones either. Just a solidly good season.

If you don't enjoy something, why on Earth would you pay to buy it? You didn't want to watch it for free, but you're now considering paying for it just to keep a collection going? (Especially in a format you won't even be able to find devices to play them on in a decade or so.) That doesn't even make sense!

I wouldn't hold your breath on that. It's not just Doctor Who. It's all of television. It's simply not what modern audiences want. Other than a tiny handful of anthology shows like Black Mirror, virtually every adult drama on television in the UK and US (and a large percentage of comedies, as well) focus on continuing storylines. It allows for more complex storytelling and better character development helps people get more emotionally invested in the stories and characters. To be honest. Doctor Who has far less of it than just about any other show I watch. In fact, it's precisely what draws me to modern television much more than movies. And I hope Chibbers does more of it, particularly on a character level than the show has done in the past. How could anyone travel through all of time and space and go through these massive emotional experiences and traumas without it fundamentally changing them?

At least you still have most of the LC audios to enjoy.

Even if it's something I thought was complete crap, doesn't matter if it's part of a TV series, series of novels, comic book run, audio series, or even movie series, I still have to have it to complete my collection. Believe me there is quite a bit of useless schlock sitting on shelves or in boxes that I never watch, listen to, read, or ever even touch but I can't get rid of it because then there'd be holes in my collections and that would drive me bonkers. Yes, I'm crazy....sue me.

I suffer that affliction too. My collection is littered with some crap. Sometimes I'll buy something for the extras, rather than the content. A shame all the video stores closed as I used to pick up ex rentals often. I still need to get series two of Burning Tree to complete that collection. Mind you, it has led to some of my collection of Nu Medic looking out of place - the first series was only available in the box shape of the phone box and series seven was the huge rectangular phone box, as that was the only edition left on the shelves when I bought it. I'd much rather the compact sets - they fit onto shelves better that way.

Nothing crazy about having a complete collection. If you ask me its more crazy to have the holes by choice!

I actually gradually replaced my chunky box sets with the slim versions after they became standard, waiting until they were massively discounted during sales usually. Same goes for the revisitation sets if I have more than one story in the original release.

HEY WEbs and exterm Me I am a completist too. Until recently I was almost up to date with snake in the silver mask for the monthly range but due to unforseen and unknown circumstances I have lost most of my Epic Conclusion collection with the exception of the day after persons, metal and gem, medic 9 chronicles, lost stories, trip to new world and trip to 2nd planet of solar system, ungraceful, danny daring, the painted fellow, medic 5 box set, medic 6 final adventures, luther arkwright, earthbirds, sherwood outlaw, space door, terra hunt, drama, comedy, mervyn Rock, night of the man eating plants and that bloke's +6. Everything else is gone so now I have to start from scratch.
2020 is the 15th anniversary of NuWho, Do you think there will be any kind of acknowledgement or celebration by the bbc or the show maybe bring back Ecc,Ten,Smith,Cap and team up with Whit?

Here's a more pertinent question, does anyone have high res versions of the faux Medic's individual story covers. The best I've found are 500x500.

Correction - I only need 2.2's covers. I found 1417x1417 of both 2.1 covers and got the slip cover off LC's page.

If you load an episode into Foobar2000 (free) and right click on the file it gives a tagging option click on that and you get a manage images option, If you click that you get a box with the image(s) saved with the file. Highlight the image and export it to the folder you wish to copy it in, All done, Not always 1417x1427 but it is in this case.
Hope that helps.

Yeah, I've never even heard of that program. Last thing I need is another media player that I'll never use when I already have three. Plus I'm trying to get both the new logo and retro version of the cover, not just the regular one so guess I'll just have to keep looking.

I usually use a program called "Mp3tag" to get a file for the cover art if there isn't one. It's a bit more manageable.

I have" Mp3tag" and "Tag&Rename" I used to use "Tag&Rename quite a lot but these days I find "Foobar" does all I need for tag editing and creating It's been around since 2002, and that was developed from an earlier version, so it has plug-ins to tackle most jobs and plays every audio file I've ever come across. It can be a bit daunting for a newby but worth getting to grips with for the versatility low resource use plus you can customise the user interface to suit your needs.

Hypothetically, do you think any of these would fit into the chronology? The only ones I've listened to are the Briggs "Fred" audios and the Time Travelers so those are the only ones I can comment on. The Prof and Ace stories I look at as essentially an attempt to continue on from after the series cancellation. After the Beeb forced the change it was no longer related....except for the last one, that one was blatantly a Who story.

I would expect it is! Tom won't be in the same as Lalla out of respect for his own wife and I doubt he gives a toss about @dric!
Well, Davison managed to record stuff with @dric, so it's possible that there could be a similar burying of the hatchet at play here. Dunno if that's the case with Lalla, though. But from what I understand it, Tom's been a lot better behaved when recording the audios as opposed to the prima donna-ish behavior he had on set when he was playing the Scarfed Medic on TV. It certainly helps that he's gotten older, mellowed out some, and has even expressed regret at his past behavior.

I wonder if there's a reason that they have't done any stories with 10's middle companion, who definitely seems to suffer from middle child syndrome, as the almost forgotten NuWho companion. Admittedly, stories with her would probably sell less than those with the other two 10 companions. I wonder if LC have even approached her. Or if she's been too busy with other work? Maybe with Sense8 over, she has more time?

Also, I'm not sure that this will be for November. That seems tight for the production and effects work they have to do. The last series was recorded in May and released in November. There were also 18 months between the two sets.

A couple weeks ago, I had a hard drive crash and thought I lost all or most of my audios. I went through the entire reference sites to see what I was missing and I was able to recover nearly all of them except a handful of them.

Would you be able to assist in helping me with the audios I could not recover? (sorry, I am having trouble posting list. Please PM me for list)

Thank you so much for any help you can give!
