I think it's pretty good. Not only it's nicely done, it's meaningful and covers all the story of the MCU to enter a new phase,
but also the music is pretty bombastic and hype inducing. Imagine yourself in a theater awaiting to see the next Marvel movie and you get that amazing logo in the big screen with the bombastic surround. Worth it.

Don't watch the remastered version.
The black levels are crushed and details are lost.
For bright parts of the scene, they look nice.
But anything in shadows is lost.
You can't brighten the screen to get it back either.
Martin Scorsese supervised the remaster himself.
But he's really old and probably hasn't had an eye exam for years.
He's really blind and just ruined the remastered edition.
I'll have to get comparisons again.
I thought I had them on my Imgur.
But the first bluray is the better transfer.
It has a lot of flaws to it, but you can at least see everything.
Darkening should be left to the veiwer since every player+tv will have different settings.
Crushing black details is not the best solution.

Okay, I can't show what's wrong with Goodfellas remastered,
But here's what a proper dark scene should look like...
Godzilla (2014), a scene early on in the movie.
VERY dark.

(
https://someimage.com/Po3DHY3)
Dafuq is that?
Some tweaking to the luminence curve (made it brighter but not by a lot)

(
https://someimage.com/osOXqpr)
That's better.
But, to tweak the whole movie, I would have to break it down to scenes.
And change only the dark scenes, as the bright scenes would be drastically brighter.
I can even make it slightly more brighter but I'd have to watch out for color desaturation.
And I would want to do it in extreme maths.
Not 8bit range (0-255), but 16bit range (0-65535) for maximum less rounding errors.
The Godzilla bluray is mighty fine.
On well made TV's that are calibrated, you should see exactly what you're supposed to see.
On cheap shit (most of the products out there), you can boost levels and see things.
Goodfellas remastered did nothing of the sort.
If Scorsese supervised the Godzilla bluray, half the movie would be one giant blotch.

Here's that Godzilla frame with SomeImage's own "compare" function.
https://someimage.com/compare/Po3DHY3/osOXqpr
First image is the original frame.
Hover over the picture and see the brightened frame.
It's 1:1 par, so if your monitor is less than 1080p, you'll see less of the image.
Even though it's cropped, it's still 1080p, by definition of millions out there who process/edit video and/or use torrents.

Another shot from Godzilla. The end of the movie.
I'm certain in theaters it was very clear to see what's going on.
Theaters also didn't have to compress image to YV12 in 8bit video.
And they had a silver screen. Which homes don't have (unless you're rich).

Yep.
A lot of older films have interludes of music.
If you've listened to the music a lot recently, it might peeve you.
There should be an intermission, too.
Movies were extremely long back then.
A good way to get out of the house and make it worth while.
Can you imagine paying to see only an hour's worth of a movie?
For comedy, that's all you need.
For dramas, you need the night out away from the damned kids.
"Kingdom of Heaven" has a "Roadshow" version on the super director's ultimate cashgrab bluray or whatever.
The Roadshow cut has the interlude and intermission.
My preferred version.
Whether or not it's important, I'll leave that to you and a glass of wine on a "me night".

No DRC any normalization.

A sequel with the original cast is very shaky for development.
Richard Donner wants to do it but has no idea how or why.
http://www.usmagazine.com/entertainment/news/the-goonies-2-is-coming-chris-columbus-calls-sequel-difficult-2015207
Corey Feldman says it won't happen if Richard Donner isn't around.
http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/the-goonies-2-sequel-corey-feldman-richard-donner-steven-spielberg-a7120981.html
I mean, the guy's super old.
To make it modern, they would need the Zack Snyder workout regime and then get the same producers as the Point Break remake to get all the stunts worked out.
Donner wouldn't be able to keep up to today's standards.
It would probably turn out to be a rom-com drama instead.
Which would make an interesting fanfic if one of them went crazy and everyone took turns visiting them in the hospital.
Where's the adventure? In the crazy person's mind.
:erm: I actually want to see that. Give it an indie film treatment.
Killgrave
07-26-2016, 05:05 PM
Donner wouldn't be able to keep up to today's standards.
You mean like 70 year old George Miller who shot Mad Max: Fury Road, the best action movie, IMO, of 2015? Employed practical, in camera stunts with a huge team of stunt performers, in a desert where temps hit 120F?
Or that it was shot by 70 year old cinematographer Richard Seale, who gave us one of the best looking films of 2015?
Or how about Ridley Scott who's approaching 70 and shoots a movie, sometimes two movies a year?

Timeline and 16 Blocks were the only movies in the 2000's that Donner made.
They weren't great. Timeline was the worst.
Miller showed that he can still direct and adapt today's standards.
Donner can't. He's a relic of the old days.
Lethal Weapon 4 was his last great movie.
Killgrave
07-26-2016, 06:16 PM
4 wasn't great. It was, at best, OK. Barely.
Honestly, though, I don't understand the love some people have for Goonies. It's a nice enough adventure film, but it's not that good. Is it because the film portrays the kind of adventure a certain generation of kids would have like to have had? I'm serious, I'd like a fan to explain to me why this film resonates so strongly with him or her. (I have colleagues when someone mentions Goonies their eyes roll to the back of their heads and they travel to their personal happy place.)
Granted, I lack the nostalgia gene. Films like Fright Night, Explorers, War Games, Gremlins - Jesus, that is a dumb film - Lost Boys are products of a particular time and should stay there. No one is going to recapture whatever lightning in a bottle the originals possessed and chasing that lightning thirty years later is a bit pathetic.
Let the originals be. No sequels because as we've seen this year most sequels in 2016 flopped and flopped hard.
PonyoBellanote
07-26-2016, 06:25 PM
Goonies is a nice adventure film but I think it's nostalgia and pop culture what has made it be so beloved today. I don't think a sequel of this is needed specially with everyone being adult and grown up and with drama. The fun and charm of the first one was the fact that they were all kids out in an adventure, doing such sequel would literally be liek shitting on the first one, hardcore diahrrea.

So we agree: Donner can't cut it.
I don't have a thesis on why the fuck I love Goonies or expected to give a scientific explaination.
I can't stand Gremlins very much these days.
Gremlins 2 I watch because it's a parody of itself. They established it very well.
I don't like Fright Night, I prefer Lost Boys.
Explorers was fun when I was a kid because I didn't give two shits about dialogue or story. Shit like that doesn't reach through to most children.
I didn't sit there and say "that's entirely illogical".
I tried watching Explorers again and could not finish it. I skipped right through to all the parts I remembered as a kid.
It's a total kids movie.
Dollars to donuts, I'd rather watch the Ernest P. Worrell franchise again than sit through The Explorers.
Now that's a stupid and fun kids movie that doesn't need any explaining or exposition.
It's built on the same principles why America loves "Super Dave" Osborne and "America's Funniest Videos" where people laugh at injury. More modernly, Jack Ass.
It's dumb. It's not meant to be anything else.
Between all the shit out there, you need dumb that doesn't try to mask itself as anything else.
Goonies strikes me as a fun adventure. When I was a kid, I thought it was cool that the main characters were children.
Sure, I watched Indiana Jones a lot. But never really wanted to connect with Short Round. No one does.
Now that we're older, we can reassess movies for being movies. We can see through the childish misdirections just to get the ticket sales of children.
One of the movies that's really stupid and partially made for kids that I enjoy rewatching today is "Spaced Invaders".
It sure as shit isn't meant to be a brain twister or make you feel intelligent or sit down write an essay to battle whichever of the Siskel & Ebert reviewers are left alive.
I don't go through the extreme when someone mentions The Goonies of going all Sucker Punch to distort my reality and live in a fantasy world.
If it gets a remastered bluray, I am going to check it out.
Just like a lot of movies that get remastered.
It doesn't have to be black and white.

Red is not easy to compress in image.

Huh, so the cause of it looking unusually bad was that it had red in it?
I think primaries in general.
The artefacts and noise came from resizing.
But primary colors are never easy to maintain.
Pure red or pure anything is rare.
It's a lot easier to use variants and shades instead.
What you see will be different than a screenshot.
The screenshot has to conform to "PC standards", such as luma levels having a maximum range of 0-255 only.
In real life, you have to measure and probably see things differently.
UHD-BD has "HDR" for High Dynamic Range conversion.
It allows a much wider view of luminence levels, which makes things like clouds much more pretty than limited bluray.
But, mostly, downscaling caused some artefacts in it.

Technically if Superman II, III and IV all feature the Superman fanfare, you'd have to credit John Williams in every single one :) Courage made his own version (it sucks) so Williams would definitely have to be in there, and the FSM blue box release also lists William as a composer for Superman II and III (again the main theme) so voila :)

I think it's best it stays in the animated franchise.
I don't think the world would tolerate a live action adaptation of this Robin. Especially if they're father/son.
It feels like that the animated films are very underground.
I literally don't know anyone in person that I can go over to their place and put on any of the animated DC films and watch them.

I wanna get the soundtrack for Lawrence of Arabia, there's lots of releases, what's the best and most complete? By the little I've looked up I believe there's not a complete release of the original, masters have probably been lost, there's a 2012 release, COMPLETE but it's a re-recording how is it?
Any CD or rip that has original songs as featured in the movie even if it's a LP or whatever?
TLDR; just guide me in LAWRENCE OF ARABIA soundtrack, how is it and what to get.

First thing, check DAK's threads for the original recording.
Then, look for the Tadlow re-recording. I know there's at least two threads for that release on here.
Why the Tadlow version? Because it seems to be the most faithful to the original version. It seems that's what they usually aim for in their re-recordings. Another reason, is that it's the "World Premiere Recording of the Complete Score". So, not only is it faithful to the original version of the score, but it's also complete.

I don't know why they picked that genre of music.
It serves no point in this century.
I'd rather they went to heavy metal instead of cRap/shit-hop.
There's nothing wrong with rock and pop like they've been doing this whole time for the trailers.
Skrillex is no excuse for music.
All the schools around here for audio engineering changed their entire curriculum to focus mostly on dubstep instead of any practical audio engineering.
And you should hear all the dumb kids going in to be the next "o.g." whatever.
One damn kid kept applying dither to everything, thinking it adds quality or does something to his tracks.
Another one showed up just because he dressed the part. But christ he couldn't say anything intelligible or even make any decent music.
I was shadowing a class for one day and said "nope" to the whole fucking school.

I think it's just a lot of small themes we've seen before.
It's a really fun movie, but leaves a lot out to give that extra feeling of satisfaction.
It should have been a Pixar movie, imo.
It feels like that The Good Dinosaur and Zootopia got their portfolio's mixed up on the production table.

I've noticed that Rick (the old guy, that burps after every word or so ) and Morty are very much like Doc and Marty, from the Back to the Future series. There are a lot of similarities. I'm sure that's on purpose.
I just love the sort of humor that the show has. There's at the least two or more episodes that have these sort of interdimensional TV shows (the episode I watched was one of them) and its some of the most hilarious stuff I've seen. You should try watching more of it, hopefully the constant burping will not throw you off.
If you've noticed that many of the characters sound alike, that's because one person voices a majority of the cast of characters (i.e. Rick and Morty have the same voice actor) :p

Zootopia got a wonderful receivment by both audience and critics, and had nice box office, was a big sucess. 95% of people I know saw the movie and liked it. I'm not saying it's a masterpiece, but I'm saying it's good, well done. Personally, I could see it having a lot of fails, specially the end, that I realized even at the first watch.

Music stores in my country don't stock soundtrack/score cd's. But like Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix Vol.1, I can guarantee that the Suicide Squad album containing these songs will be overstocked. All because it's Rick Ross, Ty Dolla $ign, and whoever else is on it. Nothing by Steven Price because that's not 'real music'.
Not saying I don't listen to rap, dubstep etc. or hating on any particular genre, but I hate when I say "I listen to movie soundtracks" and people automatically think I mean Lil Wayne or something because he happened to have a song in the movie.
Why am I ranting? And why is that at full volume?

I gotta say this soundtrack is marvelous. I'm listening to it right now as I write.. and I'm getting so many memories of the Overture.. You see, I had the luck that I went to see Lawrence of the Arabia for the first time ever in my life.. in a great marvelous cinema in Barcelona, made for true cinematic lovers.. in 4K, in the big screen, in English. I recall it with lot of joy - entering the cinema halls which were beautiful.. but most importantly, going in to see the movie.. I recall hearing the Overture blast in (the volume was very loud and the surround is one of the best I've ever heard so far in my life).. and listening to the wonderful soundtrack is making me recall the wonderful experience that it was, hearing the great music of the Overture in expectance of what was to come, then the red curtains opened up slowly, like they used in the last century.. and then.. the Main Titles began!
I repeat, it was a marvelous experience, a gorgeous movie and I consider myself very lucky of having seen it for the first time ever in this quality. Big screen, marvelous 4K picture quality, and immersive surround. I hope sometime in my life I'll come back to that great cinema again.

watching: Avengers Grimm (2015) (
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4296026/)
Cheesey as porn parodies, yet engaging.
Casper Van Dien is a hoot in this as Rumple.
The story is neat because of the public domain fairytale characters.
It's not rated, but it doesn't do much in terms of violence.
It's like they had the potential to make it rated R, but it's still very family friendly.
There isn't any vulgur humor in it. The females don't dress like skanks and expose their privates.
There's no blood in it.
The company rips off a lot of movies. Their most recent knock off is Sinister Squad (
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5481984). :rofldata:
It's beyond cheese. Every time Rumple blinks, they add cartoon sound effects for it.
I had these sitting on my externals for a long time and figure I might as well get through them.
I really ought to watch Once Upon A Time.
Public Domain can be so fun.
