It's partially generation for the first Mad Max.
It's not so much you have to distance yourself from today's technology, but more like you had to distance yourself from Gibsons crazy years.
Even during the early Lethal Weapon years, we never really heard of anything about Gibson doing or saying anything that makes us regret watching his films.
There was no internet back then, so any gossip we heard was from celebrity news channels we don't watch and celebrity news magazines we don't read.
The only time we'd hear anything is if we heard it by word of mouth. Everyone always knew someone who read and watched for the latest news and we would get our news from them.
"Oh did you hear? Danny Glover is thinking of retiring because of all those years working with Mel Gibson. Poor guys feels so much shame."
Stuff like that. That's what news was for us instead of bloggers, social sites and IMDb doing exactly the same thing...
"Oh did you hear? Dwayne Johnson is going to start in the next 5 remakes with Kevin Hart because they were a buddy sensation in Central Intelligence. Sorry, Will Ferrel, looks like your chemistry wasn't just good enough."
The first two were also filmed in Australia with actual Australians. It wasn't bastardized by America to have American actors in it.
However, for the international release, like anything out of Hong Kong, they dubbed it the best they can.
With the movie getting so many re-releases on bluray (all just repackaging, there's only two prints of the film and the very old prints are outdated)... Actually, I just covered it in the parenthesis.
If you're going to watch it, watch it with the original audio with the original accents ("accents" to non-Australians).
The laws back then for making movies were very lax compared to making movies in USA at the then time. They were allowed to do all those messed up practical stunts that would never be allowed to even practice today. This is where CG comes in with no explaination and mostly just for the sake of pop-up book 3D processing.
The actor who plays "Immorten/Immortal" Joe is the very same guy who plays Toe Cutter in the first Mad Max film.
And he really comes through as a villain that has too many problems and you just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
You'll never ever hear a car like that again.
All the Fast & Furious and Need For Speed movies either have too much hiprap in it or the cars are all smooth like children's toy cars.
F&F has some nice muscle cars, but they don't give it any room to breathe. Any time the engine revs up, there's always soft music or hippo hop music.
The first race in Need For Speed was nice, although not fully about muscle cars, but at least it established a racing environment.
Even with a stereo setup, you can still appreciate the accoustic noise from the cars speeding through different cityscapes.
The first Mad Max movie, even though it's mostly all mono, you still get to appreciate the greatness of the car through your speaker.
Just like in Steve McQueen's "Bullit" car chase scene. No music, all car. Mono, but all car.
That was the pivotol point that drove the movie as big as it did when it reached overseas.
Back when men knew what a car was. None of the smooth-dicked Asian crap.
Drive something looks like your penis. :smrt: All muscle, baby. VA-ROOOOM!!!

If there's ever one to say that's horrible, it's got to be Beyond The Thunderdome.
 Their version of a "TV" was the inspiration for a lot of people using a cardboard cutout and walking around, holding it up, and saying the world is their TV.
As a stand-alone, it's not a bad post-apocalyptic film. It did have a new song by Tina Turner (which is when you know the rights got sold to USA to commission a sequel) and it spawned the phrase that everyone quotes: "Two go in..."
As part of the franchise. :noonecares: Who's to say what went wrong *cough*STUDIOINTERFERENCE*cough*

the original or the remake?
If you watched the remake first, the only thing you get out of it is the adrenaline-seeking stunts.
The original has an actual story to it and didn't need a budget to do it.
The remake needed the budget and their pitch was to heighten the intensity of the action and risk-seeking adventures to match today's adventures.
Which fits. But that's about the only thing that will fit in the movie. The rest was just written around the production value of the film.
It also makes more of a funny reference in HOT FUZZ if you watched the original Point Break before watching Hot Fuzz.

Well, James Cameron wrote the screenplay and his then girlfriend Kathryn Bigelow directed. (She also directed Near Dark, Blue Steel, Strange Days, Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty. So with that kind of pedigree the movie shouldn't suck.

True about the marriage. Iliff wrote the original script but Bigelow was unhappy with it and Cameron stepped in and rewrote it adding more action. (You probably noticed the third act has Cameron's patented climax built upon another climax structure.) The Writer's Guild wouldn't give Cameron a writing credit which is why he wound up with the credit as producer.
BTW, the film's first title was Johnny Utah, then Riders of the Storm and then finally Point Break.
And for the record, personally, the remake both sucks and blows.
At the same time.

Like ManRay, I'm more of a video game music person, but I enjoy film music a great amount.
I think I can say I have 3 favorite film composers, one of which is Hans Zimmer.
A lot of his remains among the film scores I really enjoy.
Michael Giacchino and John Williams I probably like most. Williams is sort of a given, but Giacchino...
Let's face it, Michael Giacchino, has done a great service to both movies and games, and the latter is where he started from.
I really think his Medal of Honor scores are a collection of masterpieces. In my opinion, they're even as good as Williams' Indiana Jones scores in some ways.
This is one of the game series that essentially has film music. It might surprise a lot of people who don't know, which is why I would urge film music lovers to be more open minded, because they'll find a lot of music they like from video games.
As ManRay said, video games seem to cover many more musical styles. I think games have an extremely wide variety of different types of music (Jazz, ethnic, classical, etc), which is one reason is why I tend to listen to these more.
For example, Ocarina of Time has at least 5 different styles crammed in there, because of all the different places you visit in that game.
Dragon Quest is another series I can name off that has some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard. There's lot of classical music in these games, I love it!
Both video game and film music is really good, and has so many beautiful melodies. That's my point! :p

Imo, the games have better scores than the HBO series of The Pacific.
The retail release was just a sham. A few quick bucks for a few quick themes. *lights cigarette and walks down a black and white alley*
Maybe that's that was needed. Maybe that's all we're meant to them (the studios).
Maybe if someone paid them a visit, grabbed their scrawney necks and shove cash down their throat holes, maybe and just maybe they'd listen to us once we start speaking the only language they understand with the only language we understand.
And maybe, for once in this god-forsaken swamphole people call "home", we can bring music that's worth getting up to in the morning.
Who knows. Walk down the right back alleys in Sin City and you can find anything (except sessions).

Probably just the dts-core.
"bluray rip". Probably from a public torrent site. And they don't include lossless DTS.
And you're on a MAC. Nothing on MAC an extract DTS audio (with bit-exact precision).
The only thing that can extract lossless DTS is the dcadec library on Windows.
eac3to and foobar2000 include it. FFMPEG does, too, but has issues of its own.
I've got the end credits ripped, just need to sit down and look for a decent way to edit it.
It blends with a commercial pop song before the score kicks in.
I know you didn't like my Jurassic World rip.
Ponyo got his from someone else and everyone said nothing was done, but I think there was 'normalization' applied to it.
Which if the surround sound gets amplified in any way, there's no guaranteed clipping protection when played back in stereo.
A separate stereo mix is needed with a second normalization to prevent any clipping.
That's why I don't normalize my surround sound mixes.
People who download should be smart enough to apply it after they edit it themselves.
It's also quiet because it has dynamic range as apposed to a brickwalled OST in stereo.
Surround sound playback requires delicate procedure.
You have no idea how many times I hear people talk about surround sound being quiet on a stereo setup.

Getting "the biggest" file or biggest resolution doesn't mean jack shit.
If I asked for a MediaInfo readout, I can point out that it doesn't say "MA" anywhere.
There's only one group that I know of that releases encodes with lossless audio, and I rarely see them these days.
Aside from remuxes, that one group is about the only time to get an ecode with lossless DTS audio.

About to watch Michael Mann's "Manhunter" (1986).
Scream Factory is releasing it on bluray with a director's cut (not including content from the TV version, I think).
Apparently Manhunter has about as many different cuts as Blade Runner. :whatever:
Except, SF did the usual garbage they've been doing for a long time and people pay for it.
The Director's Cut has "SD inserts".
They just took the SD masters for the DC scenes and upscaled to 1920x1080 to match the rest of the HD movie.
Since the bluray spec (and video specifications) require that resolution must be equal as well as format: 1920x1080 in AVC or MPEG-2 or VC-1.
Not a mix and match.
The DC scenes have severe aliasing, from the upscaling kernel.
Some of them even look like camcorder recordings.
They should have just included it as a DVD.
I'm leary to read up what they did for Army of Darkness.
Me thinks it's all upscaled trash, too.
Just master it as a DVD on a bluray disc and add all the millions of special features.
SD MPEG-2 is valid for bluray. It's just that home consumers get confused and expect crystal clear piss on their face since it has the 'blu-ray' logo on it. :whatever:
Probably why bluray soundtracks bombed in the market.

One of the major chains (Cineplex; who owns all the Silver City theaters) has one location here that will seldomly play old movies once a month or every few months.
Cuckoo used to go to a lot of them.
I believe even one time we had the Mystery Science Theater 3000 team here playing live.

just upped a sample to SoundCloud:
Tom Holkenborg's "Black Mass" end credits from the bluray.
Ran it through PaulStretch at x3.14159 the normal playback rate.
In PaulStretch software, the music gets cut into samples then repeated.
The "Window size" is how big each sample will be.
I picked 12K for the window size. The developer recommends for most music anywhere from 7K to 12K.
Higher values make it sound more blended and blurred.
Lower values get more choppy.
The size of the resolution is fixed to the size of the window. If I raise the Window, the Resolution gets lowered.
In this case, at a window of 12K samples, the resolution turns into 3.9062 Hz.
Going for something like 48 Hz will drastically make it choppy and unlistenable, imo.
But, who knows, with extra editing, it could be used for extra things like making a short horror track.
I chose to stretch it to a value of PI.
The program only accepts decimal values up to hundred thousandths.
So I trimmed PI to only the first 5 decimal values: 3.14159.
I normally pick something very even like x4 but this time since I had the program open, I played with the decimals.
In Audacity, it only accepts up to hundredths (x.09).

Mad, over a movie? Nyahh. There are more important matters in life to get angry about. (Admittedly, I get really annoyed when I read some forum members pronouncements about movies or their actors when they haven't seen one frame of a film, when they let their pre-conceived notions about a film or actor overwhelm their good sense.)
I didn't like the remake because it was absolutely unnecessary. It didn't improve on the original. The actors weren't as charismatic as Reeves or Swayze, the original film's stunts were largely practical while in the remake it featured, to paraphrase you a crap-load of CGI stunts, the original was directed by a woman and the film featured a strong female character performed by Lori Petty. The remake lacked all that.
The film was probably a tax haven project.
But I agree I'd like to hear the JXL score because the original soundtrack release was a weak as the film.

I wouldn't say it "improved" on the original (which didn't need improvement at all, it still holds up at 25 years old), but I liked that it wasn't a shot-for-shot remake. The plot was different. And instead of surfers it was extreme sports.
I also liked the green tint the film had, similar to the Matrix trilogy.
Though no one will ever be a better Bodhi than Patrick Swayze, I thought Edgar Ramirez was a good choice. I liked his take on the character.
I miss Lori Petty. Last time I saw her was in the season 2 (or was it 3?) premiere of OitNB. And she recurred a few times. That was it.
