I know what you mean. Sixth Sense & Unbreakable are his two best films because Knight plays fair: he asks for one "gimme" in both films: gimme a boy who sees the dead, gimme a man who's unbreakable and he plays fair with the audience.

But after those two it becomes harder to generate the twist ending because now the explanations become more implausible. In The Village the explanation of how a 16th century colonial settlement exists in the 20th century requires a five minute long explanation delivered by Knight. (An explanation that falls apart the moment you subject it to rational thought.)

Signs demands you believe an alien race - intelligent enough to master space travel - who has a toxic reaction to water invades a planet that's 75% water and abducts children. Head scratching considering the human body is mostly water. Again, you think about that and all sorts of logical problems appear. (Like rain, humidity, etc . . .)

Knight started asking for too many "gimmes" to the point of requiring the audience to self-lobotomize.

That's when I gave up on Knight. (I caught The Happening - awful title, sounds like a documentary about 60's hippies - on cable and realized it was about killer trees. Yeah, I just wrote that. The only thing more ludicrous was casting Marky Mark as a science teacher.)

But Split is good. It's a monster movie, make no mistake, but well done. And it asks for one "gimme:" a man suffering from DID - dissociative identity disorder - and takes it to the nth degree. Like in Unbreakable: brittle bone disease exists but no one's bones are unbreakable. That's why movies are filed under the title of "fiction."

McAvoy is perfect. He gives each alter his/her own way of speaking, gestures, and body language. He is completely convincing. Taylor-Joy proves that her acting in The Witch was no fluke. You can see the thinking going on through her eyes. And Buckley, who plays McAvoy's doctor, is on point as the one person who cares about Kevin (McAvoy.)

Split is Knight getting his groove back. Maybe working with smaller budgets has pushed him and his creativity. While Split doesn't hit all the notes Sixth Sense & Unbreakable did, it comes close. (And while I like the conceit and execution of Unbreakable it was a bit of a slog through the swamps of dour. Knight later said if he could change one thing, he'd have injected more humor, albeit dark humor, into the script.)

Will you like it? If you like monster movies or movies with a psychological bent, I think you will.

And wait for the credits to roll. You might just do a fist pump.

This is one of my favorite pieces of music John Williams has ever written. Underrated as all hell, too, as I've never once seen any soul speak of this masterpiece of a composition.

2:55 - 3:37 is probably the best part (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DbWkfxDZSQ&feature=youtu.be&t=2m55s), and within that section, 3:15 to that end is transcendent.

This cue (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B18GQkZXWsEVSVpaYVh1LUo1OVE), from The End of Evangelion, which I just listened to, and still am at the moment....so, this was one of those instances where the certain section of the piece just hit me very hard, and it was like I felt this force and then tears abruptly came to my eyes. No, not like dripping down my face, like when you actually cry. But from this expressive piece, and from the way I was unexpectedly met with the feeling, it really shows the profound effect and deep grasp music can have on a person. This cue in particular especially has that really eloquent way of making an intense emotional connection with me. Since no one of us are the same, I can't really say if the same could be felt by another, but this is immense.

Also, not trying to sound like a crazy person; it's just that certain music transcends heaven and earth and when you feel it, it's difficult to put it with words, without sounding like you're pretentious or something.

(the section I meant is most particularly 1:13 - 1:36; and 1:15 - 1:18 and 1:26 - 1:29 even more particularly, and the violin's inflection and accent in this case makes a great difference in it's evocative quality)

 I got 2001: A Space Odyssey playing in the background.

It's at the very start with the apes.

It's hilarious, it looks like the apes are moshing to the music.

Although, it's nothing like playing the ubiquitous Pink Floyd album to it.
I would look for a copy on youtube where someone synced the album, but I watched the first half of the Wizard of Oz and turned it off.

Great idea, but could use a lot more heavier editing. When the album repeats, it goes downhill.

For 2001 plus oldschool metal would require a lot of planning, some editing and a lot of different music.
Not just soundtracks, but do it oldschool QT style and play random old, non-mainstream stuff.

Definitely avoid the most overused commercial songs.

The Last Guardian's soundtrack by Takeshi Furukawa...

Wow. First listen ever, and it's better than I thought it would be. I had the impression that this score/soundtrack would be very minimalist, chamber-like, to go with the very artistic style of the game, that it'd be pretty much just ambient sound, but.. I come to find a very Hollywoodesque movie score, much to my like, because you guys I know love these. This soundtrack has the best of "that style".. impressive melodies that are beautiful to hear, but also give ambient to the game, with lots of catchy orchestra action of the type I like, almost symphonic. Some tracks can sound repetitive, because I think they were composed to be looped with the gameplay (which is not bad) but.. wow, really impressive.. I have a sudden urge to get now.. colour me impressed.

DAKoftheOTA

A year, but that's including the months I took off and didn't work on it. If I had continued through with it after I started in January of 2016, I probably could've had it done in a month or two. The main reason I stopped and nearly quit on it was cause of 2 custom cues that we'll never have. It was depressing.

Since the show is, in essence he is. That's how I accepted that.

Television has become such a competition with feature films that it is really the go-to for acclaimed entertainment.

Yet I cannot bring myself to sit and watch anything current. I'll just sit and re-watch SouthLAnd, or Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, or my all-time favorite show ANGEL.

I'll revisit The O.C. or Ugly Betty or Star Trek: Deep Space Nine rather than try out Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones. I prefer not-quite-current stuff I suppose...but just watched a recent film called The Edge of Seventeen which was a great movie. Another good recent movie, The Accountant could easily be an alternate Ben Affleck Batman movie.

DAKoftheOTA

That movie was fucking awesome. I've been vocal about how much I dislike Affleck, but he was great in the role. The movie isn't what I was expecting (due to marketing), and exceeded my expectations.

Just finishing up on the Lethal Weapon movies now that Christmas is over.

I take back that the franchise isn't that good.

Only the first one is really boring.

Adding Joe Pesci in part 2 was the best thing they did.
And to keep that dynamic, they added Rene Russo in part 3.
Part 4 is just a nice wrap up of the entire franchise.

Pesci's character of Froggy at the end... Really gets me in the feels.
And then what Gibson's character says about Pesci's character to his (Gibson's character's) dead wife... "You sure picked a strange angel"...
I cried pretty hard in theaters. Not vocally, but I had to put my popcorn down.

Hands down, Lethal Weapon 4 has the best end credits.

I forgot how great Pesci was in these movies.
I'd say it was his best role.
He was good with Scorsese in the mafia movies, but they're all the same.

When I heard and read that there was a "major twist" at the end I almost didn't go because starting with the The Village the twists got more and more ridiculous. But I'm glad I went.

Knight's working on the sequel, so two to three years down the road. Looks like working with smaller budgets and with Blumhouse have benefitted Knight.

The 2017 reboot. (I shouldn't say that out loud. Hollywood might actually try it. They've rebooted everything but Green Acres & Gilligan's Island. In IMAX, the way they were meant to be seen!)

Even if Cronenberg was attached to it, I don't think it'd hold up.
There'd be way too much studio interference for such a classy sci-fi movie.
Studios would want to maximize special effects and make it RealD 3D.

And they'd sign off with a planned trilogy.

Horror genres get the shit end of the stick for studio interferences and contracts.

Texas Chainsaw was taken over by some other studio that signed off on a trilogy contract but hasn't delivered since the 3D movie which was horrible but honestly no different than the Michael Bay produced remakes/re-imagining.

I heard whispers of a Dune reboot. :sigh:
The only thing I'll look forward to is the special effects.
That's one property that has too much details for any medium to encapsulate.

The David Lynch movie was fun.
The two TV mini-series were fun.
The games were especially fun (Emperor: Battle for Dune my favorite).

If anything, they should remake the Emperor game. Put it on today's engines and it'll be a successful RTS.
Go for the Age of Wonders board strategy and it'll do just as good.
Even an RPG might be adventurous (yet short lived with small replay value).
The only thing to ruin it is making it a FPS/MP game.

Lion is definitely worth seeing. Seems like an underrated film, for sure.

Crazy how both films tried to tell a story about how a child tries his entire life to search for his family/parents. Just, The Space Between Us had a lot of bullcrap piled on top of itself. If it refrained from some of the cheesy things they said in the film, and with better screen writing, I think it would have been a very good film.

It's like they remastered it, but screwed up encoding to AVC for bluray and lost all the remastering details.

The pathetically low dialogue level is what's really of concern for most, myself included. Is there any improvement to that?

Who remastered it? Warner or a third party?

Doesn't seem so much.
Low dialogue is a sign of high dynamic range. Filmmakers generally don't want to alter that.

I remember there being vast differences for this movie.

But with Windows 10 drivers, the "Loudness Equalization" is fixed compared to earlier OS'es.
I get better dialogue compression that way while still having loud badda boom for the bank robbery scene. :D

It was supervised by Michael Mann himself.

It's not nearly as bad as that time Scorsese remastered Goodfellas and crushed all the black details.

But, overall, I'd stick to the transfer from Japan.

Lucky timing on the beats. Nicely done. With spoilers, but at this point, if you haven't kept up with the MCU, it doesn't matter.

If this is Intrada's Feb 7th release oh god.. it's one of my many most-wanted wished scores.

The general consensus with this film, like many of Mann's films is that Mann himself is borderline deaf and his films all suffer from dialogue that is buried in the sound mix. Many have hoped this new release would fix it. It's not the whole film, mainly little moments like the post-robbery of the armored truck scene with McCauley and Nate. Also, while it's never been a major thing like the revisions to Star Wars, the fact that two missing lines from the previous release had people hoping at least the second of them would be restored.

The line "You sift through the detritus..." was removed, and the funnier line "Ferocious, aren't I?"

Not the SuperBowl.

Just the commercials.
ProRes. So no logos, no half-time commercials, pure quality and no crappy HDTV macroblocking for poor cable companies with no bandwidth.

I don't get how they can call "HDTV" high def at all.
It looks like youtube videos that were uploaded, downloaded and then uploaded again (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icruGcSsPp0).

Where might one find the trailers in ProRes?
I'd be interested in nabbing the Zelda spot in that format.
Unless you're talking about only movie spots, from certain press sites.

Just that.

I've given up entirely caring about anything else.

The best you'll ever find is garbage youtube compression.

Until gigabit speeds are cheaper and available to the entire world in every neighborhood, we'll never see improvements for youtube.
Or streaming media for that matter.

I swear, YouTube compresses a lot worse than they used to five or six years ago.

I swear, YouTube compresses a lot worse than they used to five or six years ago.

Because they have to cater to ancient areas that haven't upgraded yet.

Most businesses find the best praise from catering to the lowest common denominator.

Even in first world countries in major cities, a lot of neighborhoods can't achieve high speed internet from one of the major competitors.
The neigborhood my friends live in is a nice community neighborhood. But they can only get something like 15Mbps download.
Their settings for Netflix and Plex have to be lowered.

For any youtube watching, they use their mobiles or tablets.
Which is also another leading factor for compression. Shit devices for playback.
You don't even need color for a mobile device.

Another factor?
Garbage media devices other than mobile.
TV's are shyte and meant only to display whatever is hooked up to them.
IE, DVD or BD player.
Not internet for cheap apps or externals through the garbage USB port on the TV player which requires FAT32 thus limiting your quality.
Hint: Plug the USB external into a bluray player or equivalent that can read externals and play with that. Full remux quality. NTFS file system. :smrt:
TV's are made cheap but sold overpriced for stupid people with needless needs.
Easy money.

More factors?
Bugged web browsers.
Chrome is decent and requires less work.
Firefox is always in development for the perfect steaming platform.
So many options in advanced settings you can do that will literally ruin your whole day trying to get something to work.
Sure, Adobe Flash is the easiest. Or Silverlight.
But native H264/AVC support? It's possible. But requires days of research, a competitent reader, and a lot of hacking.

So, Google made things easier and dumbed it all down for the right audience: a dumb one. :smrt:
