I've always enjoyed Powell's Mr & Mrs Smith. Face/Off and his work with Matt Damon (Bourne Supremacy/Ultimatum/Green Zone) are very good too. I agree with gururu on Hancock and X3. Bolt is very refreshing as well.

Debney doesn't feature my list all that much. Dragonfly has some nice tunes and, surprise, Sudden Death has a few good marks too :) Go for Passion Of The Christ or End of Days if you're looking for something different.

Thank you for all your suggestions! I wanted to alter my original request yet again though (sorry :P). I'm not necessarily looking for "caotically brilliant and orchestral" pieces of music. I'm just looking for something very melodic... something that you can hum. Anything with strong themes. For example, Thomas Newman with such scores as The Green Mile, WallE, Shawshank Redemption and Finding Nemo all are very powerfull and melodic.

Finished watching"The Princess Bride." Man was that an enjoyable movie. I remember looking at the cover back when I was younger and thinking it was just another love story. Boy was I wrong. This is the sort of writing I like when I read a book or watch a film. Made me curious in the book, especially when the guy who wrote the screenplay also wrote the book.

"Is this a kissing story?"

I love how grandpapa interrupts. Keeps the kid interested and makes us definitely want to see more.

There's no way they can remake this.
Not even with Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg combined.
"Sword fighting" back then was fencing.
Today, they'd have to do a lot more to keep the FPS children entertained. Swords with guns. And not Final Fantasy style either. Western adults won't understand it.
The ancient pistol blades that you see in every book about ancient weapons.

BTW, there are "grain-free" versions, clean versions if you will, of Planet Terror. Rodriguez added splices, rips, etc . . . in post.

I got that one somewhere but haven't watched it yet.

I can tell all of the stuff was done in post. He put way too much. I used to play with Mirc$ofts MovieMaker and add in film lins and other things.
It was great for one scene. Tried it on a whole movie. Not good.

I also think back to a lot of MadTV skits where they used those filtering to make parodies of "Blackula". really choppy editing and a lot of film lines and scratches.

I didn't realize they basically put a kid like me back then in a story like that. It's timeless like that. Shame future generations won't appreciate it as much. Though they will act as childish. So much for growing up.

It pains me what remaking a film like this would be like. It's not like Ghostbusters, where the concept can allow for multiple movies (as Geekvolution proved). Princess Bride is a one and done story. Even with the book having one page for a sequel, it never came to be. It shouldn't come to be. But I'll be either surprised or disappointed as to what might happen next in Hollywood.

I'll be willing to cherish the past.

I wish Intrada would re-release it and expand it like they've done with the Homeward Bound scores, and I really want them to add, like they did with the two Paramount movies, an add the score Broughton did for Off His Rockers, the short that preceeded this movie in theatres. No one does that anymore, it requires too much independent thinking. Leeching is way easier.

Do we, and by we I mean society as a whole, actually promote thought and discussion? Because, IMHO, we don't. If we can't condense a thought or idea 140 characters, we get bored or move on to the next bright shiny object that passes our field of vision. Some ideas, thoughts, concepts require more than 140 characters, they require pages and time and time for thought.

However, should someone approach a problem with a cool mind as opposed to having their hair on fire, that person is called "cold" or "uncaring". Most people in an emotional state of mind make terrible decisions, the kind we regret later.

Motion is not the same thing as action. And I blame with need for immediate response on one the decline of reading in our society and two the rise of social or, again IMHO, anti-social media.

Reading teaches you patience, long range thought and the ability to extrapolate a situation and the possible outcomes to decisions. We don't and shouldn't have our wants met right now. Looking at a scenario from 30,000 feet, some perspective, is a good thing.

Social media operates under the banner of "instant gratification takes too long." Problems generally don't arrive fully formed, they develop over time. And over time is the only way they are typically solved.

But people need to educate themselves. The Internet is more than just free porn or cat videos. There is so much information available right there from your laptop, tablet or smartphone. And don't anyone tell me they don't have the time. If you can recite the roster or your favorite sports team by heart, discuss your show programs in depth or have the time to play video games then you have time to learn about the things that make the world work.

(Case in point. Back in 2000 during Bush v Gore I had colleagues who had never heard of the electoral college. They acted as though it had just sprung forth from the brow of Zeus. Now this was while I was serving in the Air Force and I was frankly shocked by how little some of my co-workers knew about their system of government, you know, the one they'd raised their right hands and swore to defend and protect with their lives if necessary. I had to explain why the U.S. had such a system, as opposed to a straight up popular vote.)

Looks fade, luck runs out, but brains, they're generally here for a lifetime.

TheSkeletonMan939
07-13-2016, 07:57 PM
Yes, I blame a lot of it on social media as well. Facebook and Twitter have damaged society quite severely in my eyes - specifically, people's means to think coherently and with tact.
It's too bad so many celebrities and politicians have taken to it as a means of communication - it reinforces the idea for young people that "if Beyonce is doing it so must I" - but I guess it's an easy way for the people to feel connected to their idols.

Web forums like this are the last pillar for public discussion - real public discussion that lasts longer than a few sentences. I don't count Reddit because all the "bad" stuff is downvoted so no one can see it.

It's not recent and its not the fault of the technology. Tech just is, it doesn't take sides. It's the way we use it and humans often use it poorly. Many people have holes in their lives and fill those cavities with technological distractions to the point of being completely oblivious to their actions.

For example: the curators of the Holocaust Memorial and Arlington Cemetery have asked people not to use the Memorial and the Cemetery as point sites for Pokemon Go.

When you have to remind people to show respect at hallowed sites and that those sites are more important than an idiotic video game, then we've let our priorities slide downhill.

But people need to educate themselves.

They really do.

When I was mod, everyone used a single run-on sentence to explain their subjective problems.
No one made any clear points and couldn't be asked to paragraph anything.

Most users are too stupid and with too much blood in the body.
When they get flustered too easily over nothing, the blood rushes to their brain and they can no longer think.
And everything becomes personal.

Most of the time, people spent 500 words just to say "this person was rude to me because I was incomplete or indirect about what I wanted and it's all about me. ME!".

I tried asking people to be objective in their statements about their issues with other members.
And they refused to provide proper evidence.
They just said "look for the posts. it's all there".

Which means absolute squat. And also points out the definite degree of their intellectual capacity.

I really like your paragraphing.
Complete structure of the thought process.
Not all wild and making multiple connections in one sentence without giving our own brains time to think.

:rofldata:

I don't read much fiction.

There's a lot of fiction I'd like to finish myself. But I doubt I'll ever get to finishing a whole novel.
I doubt I'll be able to condense it into a novella of short stories.

But, I much prefer to read non-fiction. Just for the sake of clarity on a complete thought.
Non-fiction also has a higher rate of being objective and unbiased.
I avoided biographies as those count to have a bias, whether for the good or bad.
Sooner or later you find the point why they written the biography on someone else.

My favorite books were mostly dictionaries from different publishers and different editions, as well as different thesauruses. (thesauri?)
Completely unbiased, objective and original.
The one franchise I dind't mind having "remakes".

Except now they've ruined that by adding the word "twerk" to the language of the human race. :/

I'm finding that IMDb is more about letting paid-premium members write whatever they want.
There's a lot of trivia (which are supposed to be unbiased factoids about the behind-the-scenes of the production, which can be googled for citation) that reads as someone's personal Facebook status.
Now I have a strong distaste for the human interaction aspects of IMDb.

It's really hard to find actual facts these days.
In my day when we didn't have a computer and the internet, everyone just said "oh come on? Why wouldn't it be a conspiracy?" or something indefinite about something they dislike and have no facts.
Now, it's all internet memes and witticisms to illicit a laugh for a like.

The institution of communication has effectively become an open ring of prostitution.

Listening to the "Ultimate Edition" release for The Phantom Menace.
One day, maybe I'll know this music well enough to make an edit.

There are a lot of things wrong with it. Their first big mistake was the cover.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/52/The_Phantom_Menace_(Ultimate_Edition)_ost.jpg/220px-The_Phantom_Menace_(Ultimate_Edition)_ost.jpg

Looks like shit! I guess they were trying to differentiate it from the already-released OST, and in that respect they succeeded greatly. The UE cover looks far, far worse than any normal OST cover could get away with being. You couldn't mistake it for a standard soundtrack in that sense.

Their second big mistake was essentially ripping the music stem from the film and calling it "every note recorded for the film". Every microedit, every truncated cue, every goofy loop is preserved here.
Film versions should be preserved only for cues that offer a quite different way to listen to the material. Like "No Time For Caution" from Interstellar, or "Rest Of My Life" from ASM2. An isolated score like this is NOT worth preserving, especially after Williams's original score was chopped up into pieces before it even reached the editing room.

Crossfades are also preserved. Therefore music can run uninterrupted for ten minutes at a time even though it's all different cues... I hate that. It makes it all blend together in my mind. I can't tell which tracks have what material. It also leads to a track that literally runs as long as it takes you to read the title: Qui-Gon, Darth Maul And The Invisible Wall (The War At Its Darkest) (14 seconds).
First of all, it's not an invisible wall! Second of all, why was this its own track?

I've never listened to any Star Wars scores very seriously before, but I'm very excited to be starting just so that I can try my hand at fixing the material.

The biggest thing I like about the UE is the music video version to Duel of Fates.

Every track concerning DOF is very messy.
Not intended to be played at random.

And if you rip from CD, you must check for gaps.
EAC does this perfectly, but I don't know about other ripping programs.

The Invisible Wall is just a very short scene in the movie where it shows Qui-Gon meditating while he he waits for the sheild partitions to go down.
Darth Maul paces impatiently at the other side, waiting to kill Qui-Gon.
Obi-Wan frantically waits to join them so his master doesn't die.

And then it cuts back to the Gungan battle.
It's really just an insert to break the battle in parts. Remind us that nothing's happening with the Jedi/Sith.

Between that release and the PS1 game rip, it's far too much to invest any more time than I've spent on them before the internet arrived.

Disc 2 is entirely a broken vase on the floor.
Far too many tracks because the movie is all broken up with multiple scenes.

Had they given each track more silence, people can make their own suites, as they always do.
Worst purchase ever. I paid $30 when it went on sale in stores.
I'm missing the case and one of the discs now but I really don't care for that set.
I should have spent the money on getting the DUNE OST before it went OOP in stores. It was the PEG release, too, I believe. Way more tracks.

The one time I actually prefer the retail album over the extended piece of crap is the UE to TPM.

Good luck trying to fix anything of that sham.

The best project I've seen to date is the Audiophile version to TESB. Although the version on Shrine is outdated, iirc.
The person behind the project is on another forum, in a domain far far away.

Danny Elfman's work on the original Spider-Man. Man, do I love this score. It's amongst the most distinct I've heard. I'm rather surprised by how much I still remember of it, based on what I heard in the movie, like in 3.

It's like putting a disclaimer at the beginning of every Jackass movie. Even though the stunts being pulled off are things no one in their right mind would do, they still have to put one because they know they'll get imitated by dumb teens who don't know any better and decide it's the "cool" thing to do.

I love the short and from watching it so many times I memorized the End Credits, my most favourite part, which is exactly the one I'm listening to, yay! The story evolves around the Fountain of Youth.

Except no krakens in it. No skeleton armies. Nothing from the POTC mythology.

It would be cool if there was a mod that mixed both AoE and Age of Mythology as one.

watching season 3 of Draon Ball.

Season 2 was the best so far. The tournament was fun. Drunken Boxing was neat.

Season 3 is just okay so far. I'm not nearly engaged as I was with 2.
Goku really needs a group dynamic in this show.
This winter adventure is not nearly as gripping as a story.

I'd like to see someone die off in the series.

I also have yet to see any mortal threat against Goku since nothing seems to kill him. Just hurt him or put him down for a nap.
Guns apprently just dent him. And bladed weapons just dent him too. No peircing or stabbing.

I was told that watching this before DBZ would help better understand, but so far we know nothing about Goku.
He's just a giggling immortal demi-god that fights for good.
No origin story, no background. His grandfather is just a useless device thrown in for dialogue.
I get he has a tail, and a wearwolf creature, but still doesn't explain why he's immortal.
Are they saving up for the final season before DBZ?

Bryan Fuller was saying how he had plans for Hannibal season 4.

I might actually watch Silence of the Lambs.

I watched Manhunt the other week. Very different than how I remembered it the first time I watched it ages ago.
I rented it on DVD when we were still able to rent DVD's by the week.
Watched the theatrical version and then the director's cut the next day.
I much preferred the DC version.

But, compared to Hannibal, Hannibal is all you need now.
Even Red Dragon has become anitquadated and kept for legacy reasons.

The Silence of the Lambs and the Hannibal movie are my favorite.
NBC's Hannibal is prime.

Jerry Goldsmith - Logan's Run - Soundtrack Music Suite 1976
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9a_lOcavDwI

I remember having watched it as a kid because when I finally got around to watching it as a teenager, a lot of scenes were familiar.
And not in a Michael Bay fashion either. (The Island)

Much later, I watched it again, but this time with my mom and my older brother after we were drinking.
It was a really good memory. Listening to both of them remember the movie.
My mom loves Michael York. HUGE crush. My older brother remembers it because he loved what a good scifi it was.
The part about every animal having 3 names stuck with him and then it stuck with me.

oh, according to IMDb quotes, the old man is referencing...

The Old Man (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074812/quotes?item=qt0187096): [paraphrasing T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats"] The naming of cats is a difficult matter, it's not just one of your holiday games. You may think at first I'm mad as a hatter, when I tell you that each cat's got three different names.

He goes on that the three names are:
1) the long boring name that scientists give them (the genus of the species)
2) the names we give them (snuffles)
3) the names they give each other (in 'meow' language, etc)

Which I thought was damn clever and never thought of it that way. My older brother found it fascinating.
That was one of the rare times in a long time that I actually looked up to my older brother...

:sigh: Time you old, stabbing bitch.

I just love Gareth Edwards.

Monsters is a nice, slow film.
Godzilla is a super fun, slow film.

He really likes taking his time with the center piece.
I think he's perfect for the first Death Star story.

I heard he's no longer working on Godzilla 2.
He wants to go back to doing non-major motion pictures.
Do more indie material.

Feels like forever for Godzilla 2 and Pacific Rim 2.

Not just blue, but whited out. Like the gamma was brightened to kill the colors.

Because Transformers Dark of the Moon was a very dark 3D bluray for most viewers, studios started brightening their movies for 3D.
And they also started adding more color later, but no color as added here.

For 3D bluray, everyone wanted to fill every pixel of their expensive TV so open matte it is.
And because most TV's are cheaply made, the movies need to be brighter than normal.
So washed out colors it is.

VOTD is not my favorite of the bunch. I've never really cared to get a proper version of that.

Well, I personally don't like it. It has nothing to do with the aspect ratio. I just don't like the bad artificial coloring.. in the trailer and therefore Scope version it looked much better.. Too bad there's no way to get it in Scope.

A fan project could add black bars to it. And regrade it to be darker than normal.
It would be relatively easy to do.

You just have to spend a week going through the movie, scene by scene to ensure the black bars are right.
Might have to crop and shift image around for it to sit right.

Since the bluray is overly bright, all the details are there. It's a lot eaiser to darken details than to recover them from pure black.

Goodfellas remastered bluray crushed the blacks entirely so you can't tell where someone's suit ends and the shadows start.
You can't even tell what's meant to be their hair either.

I was thinking about the movie before I went to bed.
I have locate the movie.

Thing is - it's not the Scope, I know I love Scope as an aspect ratio but to me the matter is most about how horrible the coloring looks to me in the 1.78 version. Maybe if the 1.78 version had the colours of the trailer I'd be less annoyed, but as the Blu-ray.com review points out, it really looks like a TV movie and does not have that photo movie magic that takes you to the fantasy place like the others. And to think just a simple, better colouring job could do it nicely. But that's too much of a job and I can't do it. And I don't think any fans has bothered to do that either.

I'm listening to James Horner's AN AMERICAN TAIL. I have a love of Horner's animated afairs, it seems, specially Don Bluth's, his best scores to me, personally, among others I need to keep listening and discovering their glory.

tehƧP@ƦKlyANK -Ⅲ
07-18-2016, 07:07 PM
I haven't looked up any fan projects.

I know that one site has a thousand fan projects, but I haven't seen any talk about restoring it.
Because it's fantasy, I think most who watch it don't care about how bright it is.

When I downloaded the bluray and watched it, I noticed right away how bright it is over the first two films.
But since it was largely a 3D release, I let it go.

3D bluray is very difficult.
It seems there are very distinct ways to approach mastering a 3D bluray.

Use dark, accurate levels that cheap TV's can't see.
Use bright, desaturated levels so everyone can see and use that for the 2D transfer.
Use oversaturated colors but keep it dark so the colors stand out more.
Give the 3D version the IMAX switching aspect ratios.

Although I get IMAX 3D movies are meant to be seen only in IMAX 3D, there's no reason to leave it out the 2D market.
But since we can just strip the right-eye data, anyway, it's not that big of a deal.
Transformers: Age of Extinction is easily watchable with IMAX switching AR.
Guardians of the Galaxy, needs tweaking to the saturation as it's exaggerated for cheap TV's.

Yeah. I thought so. I have distinct memory of it being released later in the month and not in the first half.

We almost went opening night. We actually went the second or third night.
For TDKR, we waited a week to pass so there'd be more seats.

I had passes to see the first 6 minutes of TDKR at our local IMAX theaters.
It was digital IMAX and not 70mm film IMAX theater. Those got taken down due to no one going enough to see movies.
It was a fun preview. They played some clips at the end, the same way they did the preview for TDK on the Batman Begins bluray.
I eventually tossed that stub.

when the ship crashlands on the farm and Martha is like "Oh Clark".
I just had to burst out laughing.

The opening title cards vaguely imply Superman leaves the planet when news of his planets remains are found.
It's just really rushed right now.
I think if he took the time to do a montage for the opening credits rather than the Donner homage, I wouldn't be laughing right now.

She drives out to investigate like she doesn't know what's there.
And then surprised it's Clark. God, so senile.

So does he wreck the farm twice? :erm: Once from the first time he was sent there and then just now?
I hope he intends to clean it up for them.
I mean, I'm sure the Kent family has workers that help out with the farm and all, but asking them to clean up after Superman's destructive life style is asking for a lot.

I liked Rachael Dawes a lot because she was a woman of action.
Even in death, she was able to motivate the Batman.

Lois Lane in MoS seemed to have potential to not be meek and timid.
BvS, they took all that away and made her a little scaredy cat.
It would have been better if she knew he was going to die and then she said something cute that they both say as a means of letting each other off the hook.
I mean, how selfish do you have to be to keep your man alive and let thousands of others die?
She's come to her grips on several occasions, but come save the city, ooooh no. It's all about her and damn perfect Barbie lifestyle.

And I still don't believe the setup very well.
The desert scene to frame Superman.
Sure, burn the bodies, but that's not going to destory all the evidence.
At least one skeletal remain will show gunshot wounds. Because they're criminals and terrorists, you can slump that it could have been an old wound and all.
But get Dr Temperance Brennan and her team will tell you exactly that the weapons that shot the team weren't from put-together-yourself weapons. It's not like the clan of criminals had a dress code that required everyone to have one specific gun. They used whatever they can.
I also don't recall anyone doing a clean sweep of all the bullet shell casings.
And it's not like they had bags over the guns to collect them as they used them.
Luthor would have to have already powerful people on his side to make the coverup stick.
Forged documents.
But we don't see much of that. Just favors to get Zod's body.

:erm: Seems like CinemaSins is just going through the motions lately.

Some of the recent ones seem overplayed just because they're popular now.
Almost like they have a studio to interfere with them.

OH!, you know what? I think DAK meant to type 'July 18th' but missed the 1.

I did. Stupid phone. I know my movie release dates. TDKR was the 20th. Watching that on Wednesday :)

I know. The time when I first started coming around here was a dark time for me, because I was stuck on my iPhone!

What would you say the best out of the trilogy is, DAK?

Was The Matrix ever too green?
I remember it being green in theaters for scenes inside the Matrix.
And then the DVD, and then they regraded it to make it normal. And then green for bluray. Or something.
I know a lot of people complained about it.

Green in theaters is very different than green on compressed video at home.
The colorspace is much more tight at home. BT.709/BT.601 are so tiny in comparison to what theaters project, plus their screens also have effect.
So maybe green was just right for theaters but poorly transferred for home media.

I know there's been some regraded fan projects, but I thought I would try something.
This process works in 16-bit video.
8-bit video works in smaller integers. [0-255] only.
16-bit video works much higher, less rounding errors. 256*256-1= [65,535]
That's a lot of head room to work with. It's much slower but more accurate.

Original bluray:

Regraded:

For the regraded, I had to drop the green more since there was still a lot.
I slightly dropped the blue so it doesn't turn violet.
So it's got more reddish tones to it.

Also comparing each after viewing them in the same time frame will drastically cause you to see exaggerated differences.
Taking time away from the images to look at other colors and images for awhile and go back to the red image and it should look more normal.
Then switch to green then back to red and you'll see a new difference.

There's more tweaking to be done.
I can play with the different R,G,B levels to balance it more.

The Dark Knight

I also love Rises. It gets a lot of hate and I don't know why. It wrapped up the trilogy brilliantly.

The Films Just Make Me Laugh At How Stupid Lois Lane Is Always Getting Caught Or Always Happens To Be On That Particular Plane/Train In Trouble....

Seriously....

It's the cliche for the character at this point, even outside the films. The Batman / Superman World's Finest Movie from the DCAU lampshades this by having terrorists realize that with Lois Lane on the plane, Superman will stop them.

I never understood the hate for Rises either. The day I went to watch was something special.

Begins is my favorite. I'll always love it the most.
